Trends in Brain Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Bibliometrics methods have allowed researchers to assess the popularity of brain research through the ever-growing number of brain-related research papers. While many topics of brain research have been covered by previous studies, there is no comprehensive overview of the evolution of brain research and its various specialties and funding practices over a long period of time.

OBJECTIVE

This paper aims to (1) determine how brain research has evolved over time in terms of number of papers, (2) countries' relative and absolute positioning in terms of papers and impact, and (3) how those various trends vary by area.

METHODS

Using a list of validated keywords, we extracted brain-related articles and journals indexed in the Web of Science over the 1991-2020 period, for a total of 2,467,708 papers. We used three indicators to perform: number of papers, specialization, and research impact.

RESULTS

Our results show that over the past 30 years, the number of brain-related papers has grown at a faster pace than science in general, with China being at the forefront of this growth. Different patterns of specialization among countries and funders were also underlined. Finally, the NIH, the European Commission, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the UK Medical Research Council, and the German Research Foundation were found to be among the top funders.

CONCLUSION

Despite data-related limitations, our findings provide a large-scope snapshot of the evolution of brain research and its funding, which may be used as a baseline for future studies on these topics.

Intersectional inequalities in science

The US scientific workforce is primarily composed of White men. Studies have demonstrated the systemic barriers preventing women and other minoritized populations from gaining entry to science; few, however, have taken an intersectional perspective and examined the consequences of these inequalities on scientific knowledge. We provide a large-scale bibliometric analysis of the relationship between intersectional identities, topics, and scientific impact. We find homophily between identities and topic, suggesting a relationship between diversity in the scientific workforce and expansion of the knowledge base. However, topic selection comes at a cost to minoritized individuals for whom we observe both between- and within-topic citation disadvantages. To enhance the robustness of science, research organizations should provide adequate resources to historically underfunded research areas while simultaneously providing access for minoritized individuals into high-prestige networks and topics.

Latent Dirichlet allocation model for world trade analysis

International trade is one of the classic areas of study in economics. Its empirical analysis is a complex problem, given the amount of products, countries and years. Nowadays, given the availability of data, the tools used for the analysis can be complemented and enriched with new methodologies and techniques that go beyond the traditional approach. This new possibility opens a research gap, as new, data-driven, ways of understanding international trade, can help our understanding of the underlying phenomena. The present paper shows the application of the Latent Dirichlet allocation model, a well known technique in the area of Natural Language Processing, to search for latent dimensions in the product space of international trade, and their distribution across countries over time. We apply this technique to a dataset of countries’ exports of goods from 1962 to 2016. The results show that this technique can encode the main specialisation patterns of international trade. On the country-level analysis, the findings show the changes in the specialisation patterns of countries over time. As traditional international trade analysis demands expert knowledge on a multiplicity of indicators, the possibility of encoding multiple known phenomena under a unique indicator is a powerful complement for traditional tools, as it allows top-down data-driven studies.

Riparian proper functioning condition assessment to improve watershed management for water quality

Pollutants can be reduced, ameliorated, or assimilated when riparian ecosystems have the vegetation, water, and soil/landform needed for riparian functions. Loss of physical form and ecological function unravels assimilation processes, increasing supply and transport of pollutants. Water quality and aquatic organisms are response measures of accumulated upstream discharges, and ultimately of changes in riparian functions. Thus, water quality monitoring often fails to identify or lags behind many causes of pollution or remediation from riparian degradation. This paper reviews the interagency riparian proper functioning condition (PFC) assessment for lotic (running water) riparian ecosystems and outlines connections between PFC and water quality attributes (sediment, nutrients, temperature, and dissolved oxygen [DO]). The PFC interaction of hydrology, vegetation, and soils/landforms influences water quality by dissipating energy associated with high waterflow, thereby reducing vertical instability and lateral erosion while developing floodplains with captured sediment and nutrients. Slowing flood water enables aquifer recharge, deposition, and plant nutrient uptake. Water-loving, densely rooted streambank stabilizing vegetation and/or wood helps integrate riparian functions to maintain channel pattern, profile, and dimension with characteristics for a diversity of habitats. A complex food web helps slow the nutrient spiral with uptake and storage. Temperature fluctuations are dampened by delayed discharges, narrower and deeper active channels, coarser substrates that enhance hyporheic interchange, and shade from riparian vegetation. After assessment and implementation, monitoring recovery of impaired riparian function attributes (e.g., streambank plant species) naturally focuses on persistent drivers of water quality and aquatic habitat. This provides timely environmental indicators of stream ecological health and water quality remediation projects or land management.

Gender bending: auditory cues affect visual judgements of gender in biological motion displays

The movement of an organism typically provides an observer with information in more than one sensory modality. The integration of information modalities reduces the likelihood that the observer will be confronted with a scene that is perceptually ambiguous. With that in mind, observers were presented with a series of point-light walkers each of which varied in the strength of the gender information they carried. Presenting those stimuli with auditory walking sequences containing ambiguous gender information had no effect on observers' ratings of visually perceived gender. When the visual stimuli were paired with auditory cues that were unambiguously female, observers' judgments of walker gender shifted such that ambiguous walkers were judged to look more female. To show that this is a perceptual rather than a cognitive effect, we induced visual gender after-effects with and without accompanying female auditory cues. The pairing of gender-neutral visual stimuli with unambiguous female auditory cues during adaptation elicited male after-effects. These data suggest that biological motion processing mechanisms can integrate auditory and visual cues to facilitate the extraction of higher-order features like gender. Possible neural substrates are discussed.

A CEO roundtable on making mergers succeed

The announcement in January of the merger between America Online and Time Warner marked the convergence of the two most important business trends of the last five years--the rise of the Internet and the resurgence of mergers and acquisitions. M&A activity is at a fever pitch, spurred in large part by the breathtaking influx of capital into the Internet space. And all signs indicate the trend will only accelerate. Against this background, an impressive group of experienced deal makers came together to share their experiences of what makes mergers work. They were assembled in Scottsdale, Arizona, under the auspices of the M&A Group, a professional society formed in 1999 for CEOs interested in M&A as a business strategy. Participants included top executives from Internet start-ups like Teligent; venture capital firms like Baroda Ventures; financial institutions like Merrill Lynch and PricewaterhouseCoopers; and major corporations like Allstate, Tyco International, SmithKline Beecham, Rohm and Haas, VF, Crown Cork & Seal, and Hughes Space and Communications. The spirited and surprisingly frank discussion cut a wide swath, considering issues such as whether most mergers fail to pan out as well as expected, how to increase the odds of success, the nuts and bolts of the integration process, the trade-offs between acquiring a company and growing from within, the importance of cultural issues, and why anyone would want to be on the board of a merged company.

SpSoxB1, a maternally encoded transcription factor asymmetrically distributed among early sea urchin blastomeres

We have identified a Sox family transcription factor, SpSoxB1, that is asymmetrically distributed among blastomeres of the sea urchin embryo during cleavage, beginning at 4th cleavage. SpSoxB1 interacts with a cis element that is essential for transcription of SpAN, a gene that is activated cell autonomously and expressed asymmetrically along the animal-vegetal axis. In vitro translated SpSoxB1 forms a specific complex with this cis element whose mobility is identical to that formed by a protein in nuclear extracts. An anti-SpSoxB1 rabbit polyclonal antiserum specifically supershifts this DNA-protein complex and recognizes a single protein on immunoblots of nuclear proteins that comigrates with in vitro translated SpSoxB1. Developmental immunoblots of total proteins at selected early developmental stages, as well as EMSA of egg and 16-cell stage proteins, show that SpSoxB1 is present at low levels in unfertilized eggs and progressively accumulates during cleavage. SpSoxB1 maternal transcripts are uniformly distributed in the unfertilized egg and the protein accumulates to similar, high concentrations in all nuclei of 4- and 8-cell embryos. However, at fourth cleavage, the micromeres, which are partitioned by asymmetric division of the vegetal 4 blastomeres, have reduced nuclear levels of the protein, while high levels persist in their sister macromeres and in the mesomeres. During cleavage, the uniform maternal SpSoxB1 transcript distribution is replaced by a zygotic nonvegetal pattern that reinforces the asymmetric SpSoxB1 protein distribution and reflects the corresponding domain of SpAN mRNA accumulation at early blastula stage (approximately 150 cells). The vegetal region lacking nuclear SpSoxB1 gradually expands so that, after blastula stage, only cells in differentiating ectoderm accumulate this protein in their nuclei. The results reported here support a model in which SpSoxB1 is a major regulator of the initial phase of asymmetric transcription of SpAN in the nonvegetal domain by virtue of its distribution at 4th cleavage and is subsequently an important spatial determinant of expression in the early blastula. This factor is the earliest known spatially restricted regulator of transcription along the animal-vegetal axis of the sea urchin embryo.

Effect of finasteride on bother and other health-related quality of life aspects associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. PLESS Study Group. Proscar Long-term Efficacy and Safety Study

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the long-term effects of finasteride on bother and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.

METHODS

A large prospective 4-year placebo-controlled trial (PLESS) of 3040 men with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms and an enlarged prostate was performed that included self-administered questionnaires assessing HRQOL.

RESULTS

Significantly greater reductions in bother score were seen for finasteride compared with placebo at every time point after 4 months. Analysis of bother scores by baseline serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), as it is highly correlated with prostate volume, suggested greater differences from placebo for men with PSA 1.4 ng/mL or greater, primarily due to worsening after the first-year improvement in the placebo group. An activity interference domain score was significantly improved for finasteride over placebo at each time point (P<0.01), with greater treatment differences in men with higher baseline PSA levels. Comparable results were seen for worry at each time point and embarrassment due to urinary symptoms in the last 2 years of the trial. Mean changes in sexual interest and satisfaction were somewhat better for the placebo group overall, as has been previously reported, but little difference between treatments was found in sexual satisfaction measures for men with PSA 1.4 ng/mL or greater.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with placebo, men receiving finasteride had significantly less bother, activity interference, and worry due to urinary symptoms, with more pronounced differences for men with baseline PSA 1.4 ng/mL or greater. As expected, sexual satisfaction and sexual drive were slightly worse for finasteride overall, but little difference in sexual satisfaction measures was found for men with a higher baseline PSA. Thus, HRQOL was improved for finasteride compared with placebo, especially for men with a baseline PSA 1.4 ng/mL or greater.

Is audit a task for nurses?

Psychiatric nurses in the residential sector of St George's Hospital in Morpeth, Northumberland, worked with a quality coordinator to devise a means of auditing the quality of care in their wards. Their major objective was to bring the process to the grass roots of nursing care and involve front-line staff in designing and carrying it out.

Histological examination of the topography of the atrioventricular nodal artery within the triangle of Koch

The treatment of choice in patients with drug-resistant atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia is radiofrequency fast or slow pathway ablation. Ablation of the reentrant circuit in the region of the His bundle, when approached from the anterior-superior region (fast pathway); can result in complete AV block. This is less likely if the posterior-inferior (in the region of coronary sinus ostium) approach is used (slow pathway ablation). The possibility that radiofrequency energy may damage the vascular supply to the AV node must be considered. In order to confirm this hypothesis observation was conducted on the autopsy material of 50 human hearts (20 F, 30 M) from 18 to 81 years of age. Specimens were taken containing the triangle of Koch (the apex- right fibrous trigone, the base- coronary sinus ostium). These histological blocks were sectioned in the frontal plane and stained using Masson's method. Koch's triangle was divided in the sagittal plane into 3 parts: inferior (between the base and the attachment of the tricuspid valve), central (between the base and the apex of the right fibrous trigone) and superior (between this trigone and the tendon of Todaro). It was observed that the AVN artery at the coronary sinus ostium level (the base of the triangle of Koch) was positioned in 68% in the central and in 32% in the inferior part of Koch's triangle. The AVN artery in the central part was removed from the endocardium 1 mm (18%), 2 mm (42%), 3 mm (22%), 4 mm (18%). In the inferior part 1 mm (26%), 2 mm (37%), 3 mm (37%). No statistically significant relationship was observed between those groups.

CONCLUSIONS

1) in 20% of examined hearts the AVN artery lay just beneath the endocardium near the coronary sinus ostium 2) there is a risk of the AVN artery coagulation during radiofrequency ablation in the slow pathway region.

Association between myelodysplastic syndromes and inflammatory bowel diseases. Report of seven new cases and review of the literature

We report seven patients with both myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Crohn's disease in six cases, ulcerative colitis in one case. We describe their characteristics, and those of 10 previously published similar cases are presented here. Median age at diagnosis of IBD (61 years) was high, as compared to the usual age at diagnosis of IBD. IBD was diagnosed first in nine cases, MDS first in one patient, and both diseases were diagnosed simultaneously in seven cases. Concerning IBD, there was a strong predominance of Crohn's disease (15/17 cases), with an unusually high frequency of colonic involvement (11/15 cases). MDS, in 12/17 cases, showed no excess of marrow blasts. Cytogenetic analysis was abnormal in five of the 13 evaluable cases. These observations suggest that the association between MDS and IBD may not be fortuitous in some cases, and that, in particular, patients with IBD and anemia of nonobvious origin should be evaluated for MDS. The pathogenesis of those associations, however, remains unclear.

Bilateral atresia of the proximal ampullary segment of the fallopian tubes

An infertile woman had segmental defects of the proximal ampullae of both fallopian tubes. At laparoscopy, its appearance was similar to that of bilateral tubal electrosurgical sterilization. We believe this is the first description of this congenital anomaly.

Clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner core curricula survey results

The American Nurses' Association's Council of Clinical Nurse Specialists and Council of Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners conducted a survey of all graduate nursing programs in the United States that prepare nurse practitioners and/or clinical nurse specialists. One hundred eight schools responded (73.5 percent), yielding data on 317 programs that could be further analyzed. For the 60 NP and 195 CNS programs analyzed, information was obtained on the following: required courses, number of hours of the required courses, students' clinical training settings and graduates' employment settings. Findings revealed marked similarity between the core curricula of NP and CNS graduate programs. The only significant differences found were that NP programs placed greater emphasis on pharmacology, primary care, physical assessment, health promotion, nutrition and history-taking in their curricula. In both the student clinical settings and graduate employment settings, NPs focused on primary care settings while CNSs focused on secondary or tertiary care settings. Based on the marked similarities between the core curricula of NP and CNS graduate programs, it is suggested that further investigations be conducted to determine whether objectives and/or teaching methods differ, and to further investigate the effects of practice setting on role development. Further, it is suggested that NPs and CNSs continue to interact through forums and conferences to continue the evolution and definition of graduate nursing education and advanced practice.
