Abstract
Complex immune response to infection has been highlighted, more than ever, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This review explores the immunomodulatory treatment of moderate-to-severe forms of this viral sepsis in the context of specific immunopathogenesis. Our objective is to analyze in detail the existing strategies for the use of immunomodulators in COVID-19. Immunomodulating therapy is very challenging; there are still underpowered or, in other ways, insufficient studies with inconclusive or conflicting results regarding a rationale for adding a second immunomodulatory drug to dexamethasone. Bearing in mind that a “cytokine storm” is not present in the majority of COVID-19 patients, it is to be expected that the path to the adequate choice of a second immunomodulatory drug is paved with uncertainty. Anakinra, a recombinant human IL-1 receptor antagonist, is a good choice in this setting. Yet, the latest update of the COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel (31 May 2022) claims that there is insufficient evidence to recommend either for or against the use of anakinra for the treatment of COVID-19. EMA’s human medicines committee recommended extending the indication of anakinra to include treatment of COVID-19 in adult patients only recently (17 December 2021). It is obvious that this is still a work in progress, with few ongoing clinical trials. With over 6 million deaths from COVID-19, this is the right time to speed up this process. Our conclusion is that, during the course of COVID-19, the immune response is changing from the early phase to the late phase in individual patients, so immunomodulating therapy should be guided by individual responses at different time points.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this work was to determine hand joint inflammation in systemic sclerosis (SSc); patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with hand joint involvement were used as controls. Our investigation also aimed at examining the relationship between these subclinical inflammatory changes in the hands, verified by low-frequency MRI, and clinical (especially cardiopulmonary) manifestations, disease activity, and functional capacity in patients with diffuse cutaneous (dcSSc) and limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc). Methods: Out of 250 SSc patients, the selection included 82 patients with signs and symptoms of joint involvement, and 35 consecutive RA patients. These patients underwent clinical and laboratory investigations, and hand X-ray and MRI of the dominant hand. Synovitis/tenosynovitis, bone edema, and erosions were investigated, and the bone changes were quantified and scored using the RAMRIS method. HAQ index, modified Rodnan skin score, examination of internal organ involvement, and serological markers for SSc, as well as rheumatoid factor (RF) and cyclic citrullinated peptides antibodies (ACPA), were performed on all experimental group subjects. Results: MRI of the dominant hand showed a significantly higher number of cases with synovitis (78%) than the number of patients with clinically swollen joints (17.1%; p < 0.001); bone edema was found in 62 (75.6%) SSc patients. MRI also showed a higher number of erosions (52; 63.4%) compared to those (22; 27.5%) detected with X-ray (p < 0.001). The average values of the total MRI score of synovitis/edema and erosions in the wrist (p < 0.001) and MCP joints (p < 0.001) were statistically higher in RA than in SSc patients (p < 0.001). The probability of the MRI-detected inflammatory changes was considerably higher in SSc patients who had vascular complications (digital ulceration, OR = 4.68; 95% IP: 1.002−22.25; p < 0.05), in patients with more severe functional impairment (OR = 8.22; 95% IP: 1.74−38.89; p < 0.01), and in patients with active disease (OR = 3.132; 95% IP: 1.027−9.551; p < 0.05). In our investigation, patients with a limited form of the disease and with inflammatory changes on MR more often had higher functional impairment compared to the other group without MRI inflammation. Conclusions: Our data show that in SSc MRI can detect a significant subclinical joint inflammation. RAMRIS confirmed the high degree of joint inflammation in RA, but also revealed a great deal of joint inflammation in SSc. That inflammation is associated with systemic inflammation (disease activity), vascular complications, and more severe forms of the disease, as synovitis cannot be precisely diagnosed by the clinical examination of joints. These results suggest that a careful joint investigation is necessary in SSc, and that in symptomatic patients, MRI may identify joint inflammation. In clinical practice, this evidence might drive to an early targeted therapy, thus preventing joint erosions.

Abstract
Background:
Beta-adrenergic (β-AR) receptor blockers (BBs) are an essential class of drugs as they have numerous indications. On the other hand, they have numerous unwanted effects which decrease the compliance, adherence, and persistence of this very useful group of drugs.
Objective:
The paper aims to analyze the possibility that an unnoticed side effect may contribute to a less favorable pharmacologic profile of BBs, e.g., a diminished reaction to a sudden fall in BP.
Methods:
We searched two medical databases for abstracts and citations (Medline and SCOPUS). Moreover, we searched the internet for drug prescription leaflets (of the individual BBs).
Results:
Whichever cause of stress is considered, the somatic manifestations of stress will be (partially) masked if a patient takes BB. Stress–induced hypercatecholaminemia acts on β-AR of cardiomyocytes; it increases heart rate and contractility, effects suppressed by BBs. The answers of the organism to hypoglycemia and hypotension share the main mechanisms such as sympathetic nervous system activation and hypercatecholaminemia. Thus, there is a striking analogy: BBs can cover up symptoms of both hypoglycemia (which is widely known) and of hypotension (which is not recognized). It is widely known that BBs can cause hypotension. However, they can also complicate recovery by spoiling the defense mechanisms in hypotension as they interfere with the crucial compensatory reflex to increase blood pressure in hypotension.
Conclusion:
Beta blockers can cause hypotension, mask it, and make recovery more difficult. This is clinically important and deserves to be more investigated and probably to be stated as a warning.

Abstract
Arterial hypertension (HTN) is important due to its high prevalence, morbidity, and mortality rates. Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are the first-line antihypertensive drugs. HTN can lead to heart failure (HF) by causing hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (HTN LVH). CCBs are recommended for the treatment of HTN LVH. The aim of this study was to analyze the status of CCBs regarding (1) HTN LVH treatment and (2) capability to prevent HTN-induced HF in the guidelines. For this narrative review, the following databases were searched: Medline, Scopus, Science Direct, Springer, SAGE, Wiley, Oxford Journals, Cambridge, and Google Scholar. CCBs are effective antihypertensive drugs and a very good therapeutic option for HTN LVH as they can cause reverse LVH remodeling. Consequently, we may expect that CCBs would prevent HF. However, evidence suggests that CCBs confer less protection from HF than other first-line antihypertensive drugs. A negative inotropic action of nondihydropyridine CCBs may contribute to suboptimal protection against HF. This discrepancy is clinically relevant because CCBs are in one of the two recommended (single pill) combinations for the initial treatment of HTN. LVH is a strong risk factor for HF in HTN patients. When LVH arises, the risk of HF increases dramatically. CCBs are inferior to renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockers but still very effective in bringing about regression of HTN LVH; consequently, CCBs are expected to protect from HF. On the contrary, CCBs protect from HF less effectively than other first-line antihypertensive drugs. This discrepancy needs to be investigated further to improve clinical practice.

Abstract
Immune cells and mediators play a crucial role in the critical care setting but are understudied. This review explores the concept of sepsis and/or injury-induced immunosuppression and immuno-inflammatory response in COVID-19 and reiterates the need for more accurate functional immunomonitoring of monocyte and neutrophil function in these critically ill patients. in addition, the feasibility of circulating and cell-surface immune biomarkers as predictors of infection and/or outcome in critically ill patients is explored. It is clear that, for critically ill, one size does not fit all and that immune phenotyping of critically ill patients may allow the development of a more personalized approach with tailored immunotherapy for the specific patient. In addition, at this point in time, caution is advised regarding the quality of evidence of some COVID-19 studies in the literature.

Abstract
Three edible mushrooms of the Russulacea family (Lactarius deliciosus, Lactarius sanguifluus and Lactarius semisanguifluus), most frequently consumed in Serbia, were analyzed using the ICP-OES technique to evaluate the content of K, P, Ca, Mg, Na, Al, As, Cd and Pb, both in cap and stipe. Corresponding soils were analyzed, too. Based on the obtained values for the elemental composition of the mushrooms and the soil, bioaccumulation and translocation factors were calculated. All the examined mushrooms species were recognized as bioexclusors of analyzed toxic elements, but bioaccumulators of K, P and Ca. The studied mushrooms are good sources of macroelements. One portion of 300 g of fresh mushrooms had a significant contribution of K and P, exceeding 15 % of the recommended daily intake for the elements. On the contrary, mushrooms had a low potential to bioaccumulate toxic elements, and presented results indicated the regular consumption of wild edible mushrooms is safe for human health. Correlation analysis was applied to determine phosphorus?s influence on the elements? content in the mushrooms and corresponding soils, demonstrating the most remarkable mushrooms' tendency to accumulate phosphorus.

Abstract
Background:Inflammatory lesions of hand are frquent clinical feature in rheumatoid artritis (RA), with lower frequency in pts with systemic sclerosis (SSc), also. MR is useful method for detecting and quantification of inflammatory lesion of the hand (bone oedema, erosions, synovitis) in RA and SSc.Objectives:The aim of the study was to compare MR hand feature in SSc (experimental) and RA (control group) and to detect the localisation of the highest OMERACT RAMRISinflammatory score on the hand in pts with SSc and RAMethods:110 pts with SSc and 60 with RA were investigated (mean age 53y). All the pts underwenr clinical examination, X ray and MR on the dominant hand and wrist. Contrast enhanced low field MRI of the wrist and MCP2-5 joints was performend to all the pts. MRI inflammatory changes (bone oedema,erosions, synovitis)were assessed and scored by OMERACT RAMRIS scoring system.Results:Clinical examination confirmed synovitis in 17.1%, and 78% of patients with SSc using MR I (p <0.001). In the SSc group, erosions (by MR method) was confirmed in 52 (63.4%), by radiography in 22 pts (27.5%), which is a significantly lower percentage (p <0.001). In the control RA group, erosion was confirmed in 34 (97.1%) by MR method, and by radiography in 6 (17.1%), which is a statistically significant difference (p <0.001). Mean values of total MR score of synovitis (2.69 ± 2.29: 4.37 ± 1.31), oedema (6.58 ± 10.89: 20.57 ± 10.23) and erosion (6.84 ± 7, 43: 18.60 ± 5.01) on the wrist of the dominant hand were significantly higher in subjects with control RA than in those in the experimental SSc (p < 0.001). Mean values of total MR score of synovitis (3.15 ± 2.95: 5.26 ± 2.09), oedema (3.99 ± 9.82: 10, 51 ± 7.90) and erosion (4, 04 ± 4.76: 9.69 ± 4.27) on the MCP joints of the dominant hand were significantly higher in the control RA subjects (p <0.001).The highest OMERACR RAMRIS synovitis score was on distal radioulnar (DRU joint) of hand in SSc and also In RA pts. The highest erosion score was found on capitate bone in SSc, but in lunate bone in RA pts. The highest bone oedema score was also found on capitate bone in SSc, but in lunate bone in RA pts. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to determine the predictive power of metabolic syndrome (MS) definitions on the prognosis in patients with myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation (STEMI). METHODS We prospectively included 507 patients with STEMI who were admitted for primary percutaneous coronary intervention and could be identified for MS using the AHA-NHLBI, NCEP-ATP III and IDF definitions. After applying these criteria, we divided the group in patients with MS and without MS; we compared baseline characteristics, clinical findings and outcomes among these patients. RESULTS The prevalence of MS was lowest with the NCEP-ATP III definition (37.87%), followed by the AHA-NHLBI definition (42.80%) and highest when using the IDF definition (44.38%). During follow-up, the occurrence of new myocardial infarction and new revascularization was significantly higher in patients with MS. Only in a group of patients with MS according to the NCEP-ATP III definition, a higher number of strokes were recorded. Multivariate analysis shows that MS according to the NCEP-ATP III definition was an independent predictor for MACE (OR 1.830, 95% CI 1.238-2.704, p = .002) but not for mortality. CONCLUSION Metabolic syndrome according to the NCEP-ATP III definition was associated with increased risk of the development of new cardiovascular events among the patients with STEMI.

Abstract
Increased efforts in cancer genomics research and bioinformatics are producing tremendous amounts of data. These data are diverse in origin, format, and content. As the amount of available sequencing data increase, technologies that make them discoverable and usable are critically needed. In response, we have developed a Semantic Web-based Data Browser, a tool allowing users to visually build and execute ontology-driven queries. This approach simplifies access to available data and improves the process of using them in analyses on the Seven Bridges Cancer Genomics Cloud (CGC; www.cancergenomicscloud.org). The Data Browser makes large data sets easily explorable and simplifies the retrieval of specific data of interest. Although initially implemented on top of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data set, the Data Browser's architecture allows for seamless integration of other data sets. By deploying it on the CGC, we have enabled remote researchers to access data and perform collaborative investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of overt diabetes and poor glycemic control on the risk of cardiovascular disease is well established. Among patients with type 2 diabetes, several studies demonstrated a significant increase in coronary artery disease-related death and cardiovascular events associated with HbA1c levels of greater than 7% compared with lower levels. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors are a novel class of anti-diabetic drugs that lower blood glucose levels through the suppression of renal glucose reabsorption thereby promoting renal glucose excretion. OBJECTIVES To summarize data on the potential mechanisms of SGLT-2 inhibition that could exert cardiovascular benefits in patients with diabetes mellitus. METHOD We conducted an in-depth literature search of SGLT-2 inhibitors and potential cardiovascular benefits and mechanisms that mediate those effects. RESULTS In diabetes, expression of the SGLT-2 genes is up-regulated and renal threshold increased, resulting in increased glucose reabsorption from glomerular filtrate, reducing urinary glucose excretion and worsening hyperglycemia. SGLT-2 inhibition should offer potential cardiovascular protection in diabetic patients via attenuating hyperglycemia, blood pressure, body weight, hyperuricemia, and diabetic nephropathy. CONCLUSION The initial data of SGLT-2 inhibitors suggest beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk among patients with diabetes mellitus. Several mechanisms are hypothesized to mediate the abovementioned benefits. Future randomized, controlled studies are needed in order to unveil the contribution of each mechanism to these outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction To assess predictive value of new tumor markers, precursor of prostate specific antigen (p2PSA) and its derivates-%p2PSA and prostate health index (PHI) in detection of patients with indolent and aggressive prostate cancer (PC) in a subcohort of man whose total PSA ranged from 2 to 10ng/mL. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study included 129 consecutive male patients aged over 50 years, with no previous history of PC and with normal digital rectal examination findings, but with serum PSA in interval between 2 and 10ng/mL. All patients underwent standard transrectal ultrasonography guided prostate biopsy for the first time. For all patients, serum PSA, free PSA (fPSA) and p2PSA were measured and PHI and %p2PSA were calculated. Results PHI and %p2PSA levels were significanlty higher in patients with PC compared to those without this malignancy. The same findings have been observed in group of patients with Gleason score ≥7 compared to those with Gleason score <7. ROC analysis reveled the highest area under the curve with these two markers. Multivariate logistic regression showed significant improvement in PC detection and its agressive form (assumed as Gleason score ≥7). Conclusions New markers, derivates of p2PSA (especially %p2PSA and PHI), represente potentially very important clinical tool for predicting presence of PC, and even more important, to discriminate patients with Gleason score <7 from those with Gleason score ≥7 with total PSA in range from 2 to 10ng/mL.

Abstract
The aim of our research was to evaluate the changes in levels of cytokines and redox state parameters in blood and isolated heart of rats subjected to different swimming protocols. Rats were divided into 3 groups: 1) controls, 2) moderately trained rats that during all 12 weeks swam 1 h/day, 5 days/week, and 3) overtrained rats that in 10(th) week swam twice, 11(th) week 3 times, and in 12(th) week 4 times a day for 1 h. After sacrificing, blood from jugular vein was collected, and the heart excised and perfused on a Langendorff apparatus. Samples of the coronary effluent were collected during coronary autoregulation. Levels of superoxide anion radical (O(2)(-)), hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), nitric oxide (NO) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured in plasma and coronary effluent, while reduced glutathione (GSH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured in erythrocytes. Venous blood was also used for interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) determination. Moderate training protocol induced the decrease of TBARS in plasma, while both training protocols induced the decrease of O(2)(-) and H(2)O(2) in coronary effluent. There was no significant difference in levels of cytokines between groups. The results of study add evidence about beneficial effects of moderate-intensity training on blood and cardiac redox state of rats, and furthermore, shows that exercising frequently, if the intensity stays within moderate range, may not have detrimental effects.

Abstract
Vascular age (VA) represents chronological age (CA) adjusted for individual's atherosclerotic burden. The presence of erectile dysfunction (ED) has been considered as a clinical sentinel of premature atherosclerosis. The objective of this study was to explore the predictive value of ED in assessing the discrepancy between VA and CA. In the period from 1 January 2014 to 1 January 2015, all consecutive men referring to the outpatient departments of the Clinics of Urology and Cardiology in Belgrade (Serbia) were considered for enrolment in this cross-sectional study. General exclusion criteria were: age below 18, heart failure, history of myocardial infarction, impaired renal and liver function, acute infection, history of endocrine disease other than type 2 diabetes, pelvic surgery or trauma, and acute coronary syndrome within the last 6 months. According to the presence of ED, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and history of coronary artery disease participants were assigned into five study groups. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the predictive value of ED in detection of advanced VA. The mean age of males enrolled in the study was 52.9 ± 7.7 years. The predominance of VA over CA was statistically significantly higher in the group of participants with coexistence of ED and hypertension compared to the group of patients with ED and type 2 diabetes (p = 0.027) and the group of patients with ED (p = 0.014) and control group (p < 0.01). Regression analysis highlighted that ED represented a highly important marker (p < 0.01) of advanced VA, which independently accounted for 6.1% of the variance in the discrepancy between VA and CA. Our study suggests that assessment of ED could be a part of a more comprehensive prediction of patients' advanced VA. Screening among such a highly selected population may help identify those that would most benefit from drug treatments and life style changes.

Abstract
Background Severe sepsis and/or trauma complicated by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome are the leading causes of death in critically ill patients. The aim of this prospective single-centre study was to assess the prognostic value and daily trend of interleukin-6 (IL-6), neutrophil CD64 expression, C-reactive protein (CRP) and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) regarding outcome in critically ill patients with severe trauma and/or severe sepsis. Outcome measure was hospital mortality. Methods One hundred and two critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a tertiary university hospital were enrolled in this prospective study. Blood samples were collected on admission (day 1), days 2 and 3. Results CD64 index was 1.6-fold higher on day 1 and 1.78-fold higher on day 2 in non-survivors (p<0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) for the CD64 index on day 1 for outcome was 0.727. At a cut-off level of 2.80 sensitivity was 75% and specificity was 65%. Patients with CD64 index level on day 1 higher than 2.80 had 2.4-fold higher probability of dying. Odds ratio is 2.40; 95% CI 0.60–9.67. Conclusions CD64 index on day 1 is a fairly good predictor of outcome. AUCs for IL-6, CRP and LBP were < 0.55, suggesting these biomarkers failed to predict outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A relative dietary ω-3 fatty acid deficiency exists in Western diets, and this deficiency may be associated with some chronic diseases. The aim of the present study was to supplement yogurt with docosahexaenoic acid and assess whether this fatty acid could be incorporated into plasma lipids. METHODS We developed a stable emulsion of docosahexaenoic acid that was incorporated into yogurt. Twelve healthy volunteers agreed to consume 1 serving daily that contained 600 mg of docosahexaenoic acid. RESULTS After 3 weeks of supplementation, plasma phospholipid docosahexaenoic acid content increased significantly, by 32%, in parallel with a 16% rise in total ω-3 fatty acids. This result was associated with a significant 7% decline in phospholipid arachidonic acid. CONCLUSIONS Fortification of ordinary foods with docosahexaenoic acid is a potentially attractive method of increasing ω-3 fatty acid content of plasma lipids, and might even lower arachidonic acid concentrations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The EUROASPIRE surveys showed high rates of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in patients with coronary heart disease, identified after coronary artery bypass graft, percutaneous coronary intervention or myocardial infarction, with time trends in preventive cardiology over more than a decade. AIM The aim of this study was to test the implementation of European recommendations for cardiac rehabilitation and secondary risk prevention programmes in the population of coronary heart disease patients from Serbia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 665 consecutive coronary heart disease patients (432 men, 233 women, aged 59.43 +/- 11.62 years), admitted for specialized cardiovascular rehabilitation, interviewed and examined in relation to the presence of coronary risk factors and administration of secondary prevention measures, were enrolled in the study. RESULTS High rates of smoking (27.67%), central obesity (58.05%), physical inactivity (61.50%) and adverse dietary habits (61.50%) were observed, as well as low frequency of patients who have reached recommended targets for waist circumference (41.95%), total cholesterol (40%), LDL-cholesterol (39.25%), HDL-cholesterol (59.69%) and triglycerides (59.25%), while systolic (82.26%) and diastolic blood pressures (95.49%) were well regulated. A significantly lower rate of achieved therapeutic targets, despite widely used cardioprotective drugs, was observed in diabetic patients and patients with the metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION The results have shown a low proportion of coronary heart disease patients, especially with diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, who reached the recommended therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic risk profile parameters, in spite of widely used cardioprotective drugs, and therefore clearly demonstrated the compelling need for more effective lifestyle management in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease.

Abstract
Arterial base deficit/excess (BD/E) is commonly used marker of metabolic acidosis in critically ill patients, but requires an arterial puncture and blood gas analysis. We hypothesized that serum bicarbonate (HCO3), which can be routinely obtained, strongly correlates with arterial BD/E and provides equivalent predictive information. In addition, we evaluated predictive value of simplified acute physiology score III (SAPS III). Total of 152 critically ill surgical patients were included in retrospective analysis. On admission to intensive care unit sets of simultaneously obtained paired laboratory data, including an arterial blood gas and serum chemistry panel with serum HCO3 were obtained. Very strong correlation between BD/E and simultaneously measured serum HCO3 levels was found (r = 0.857, R(2) = 0.732, p < 0.01). The serum HCO3 level reliably identified a significant metabolic acidosis (AUC = 0.761, p < 0.05). BD and SAPS III were good predictors of mortality (AUCs 0.70 and 0.74, respectively). Serum HCO3 may be used as substitute to detect severe metabolic acidosis. BD and SAPS III score were good predictors of mortality.

Abstract
An important flavor component of citrus oils is limonene. Since limonene is lipid soluble, it is often added to foods as an oil-in-water emulsion. However, limonene-containing oil-in-water emulsions are susceptible to both physical instability and oxidative degradation, leading to loss of aroma and formation of off-flavors. Proteins have been found to produce both oxidatively and physically stable emulsions containing triacylglycerols. The objective of this research was to determine if whey protein isolate (WPI) could protect limonene in oil-in-water emulsion droplets more effectively than gum arabic (GA). Limonene degradation and formation of the limonene oxidation products, limonene oxide and carvone, were less in the WPI- than GA-stabilized emulsions at both pHs 3.0 and 7.0. These data suggest that WPI was able to inhibit the oxidative deterioration of limonene in oil-in-water emulsions. The ability of WPI to decrease oxidative reactions could be due to the formation of a cationic emulsion droplet interface at pH 3.0, which can repel prooxidative metals, and/or the ability of amino acids in WPI to scavenge free radical and chelate prooxidative metals.

Abstract
The Cretaceus-Tertiary (KT) boundary at Stevns Klint (the H?jerup succession), Fiskeler, consists of a thin red clay layer overlain by a thick one of black marl. These two layers are made up mainly from cheto-smectite and biogenic calcite. The black marl shows an enhanced concentration of Ni (655 ppm) within its smectite fraction. Additionally, its carbonate fraction also shows an enhanced concentration of Ni (245 ppm). It is reasoned that these enrichments represent a sudden and rapid input of high amounts of Ni into the late Cretaceus seawater at Stevns Klint. The ultimate source of Ni in both the carbonate and smectite fractions of the black marl was probably impact fallout, produced by the KT asteroidal impact, deposited on the nearby soil and leached by the (acid) surface waters. The geochemistry of the Ni supports the hypothesis that the smectite of this marl most likely has a local (marine or terrestrial) provenance and was probably redeposited, after its formation, from the original site to its present location at the KT boundary.

Abstract
In nine population samples from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Macedonia (Skopje and Aromuns from Stip region), Romania, Serbia and Slovakia 12 dermatoglyphic variables have been studied. There are distinct differences between the populations and between males and females. The Macedonian Aromuns are clearly separated from the other populations.

Abstract
The effects of an n-3 oil emulsion, with and without added antioxidants, on lipid oxidation in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-fortified meat products were studied. An emulsion of n-3 PUFAs was prepared (25% algal oil, 2.5% whey protein isolates, 10mM sodium citrate, 0.2% potassium sorbate, 500ppm of 70% mixed tocopherols, 100μM EDTA, pH 3, pasteurized at 75°C for 30min) and incorporated into fresh ground turkey, and fresh pork sausage (20% fat) to achieve a concentration of 500mg n-3 PUFA/110g meat. An antioxidant combination containing rosemary (0.2% w/w; radical quencher), citrate (0.5% w/w; sequestrant) and erythorbate (1g/kg product; reductant) was prepared and incorporated into ground turkey patties (5cm dia, 1.5cm thick) or fresh pork sausages (5cm dia, 1.5cm thick). Meat products were stored at 4°C or -18°C and analyzed for color (L*, a*, b* values), lipid oxidation (TBARS and lipid hydroperoxides) and n-3 PUFA profile. a* Values of refrigerated ground turkey patties decreased with storage, and an antioxidant combination effect was observed after 4 days (P<0.05). For fresh pork sausages at 4°C, control+antioxidant (CON+ANTI), and n-3+antioxidant (n-3+ANTI) groups showed greater a* values than controls (CON) indicating that the antioxidant combination stabilized meat color. TBARS and lipid hydroperoxides of both n-3 PUFA-enhanced meat products increased with storage (P<0.05); there were no significant changes in TBARS or lipid hydroperoxides for treatments containing the antioxidant combination (P<0.05). The actual level of n-3 PUFA incorporation in both meat products was greater than 87%; n-3 PUFA concentrations did not change within any treatment during storage (P>0.05). These results provide support for including antioxidant protection in n-3 PUFA fortified meat products.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes has the ability to form biofilms on food-processing surfaces, potentially leading to food product contamination. The objective of this research was to standardize a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microtiter plate assay to compare the ability of L. monocytogenes strains to form biofilms. A total of 31 coded L. monocytogenes strains were grown in defined medium (modified Welshimer's broth) at 32 degrees C for 20 and 40 h in PVC microtiter plate wells. Biofilm formation was indirectly assessed by staining with 1% crystal violet and measuring crystal violet absorbance, using destaining solution. Cellular growth rates and final cell densities did not correlate with biofilm formation, indicating that differences in biofilm formation under the same environmental conditions were not due to growth rate differences. The mean biofilm production of lineage I strains was significantly greater than that observed for lineage II and lineage III strains. The results from the standardized microtiter plate biofilm assay were also compared to biofilm formation on PVC and stainless steel as assayed by quantitative epifluorescence microscopy. Results showed similar trends for the microscopic and microtiter plate assays, indicating that the PVC microtiter plate assay can be used as a rapid, simple method to screen for differences in biofilm production between strains or growth conditions prior to performing labor-intensive microscopic analyses.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to show the results of working ability estimation of the workers with arterial hypertension. The estimation included 313 workers with arterial hypertension estimated by Disability Commission during 1999. Arterial hypertension was a leading diagnosis in 30.9% cause of working ability estimation. The majority of workers belonged to the 41-60 years age group and were with arterial hypertension with complications on the fundus and on the heart. In the examined group the majority of workers was declared as first category invalid (35.8%), while 32.3% of hypertensive workers had to change the working place. The majority of the first category invalids were among the hypertensive workers from textile and chemical industry, as well as among the professional drivers. The changing of the working place was more frequently suggested to the workers in textile and metal industry and in printing firms. These results could be explained by the influence of professional noxious agents on the onset and development of arterial hypertension.
