Limits on gravitational-wave emission from selected pulsars using LIGO data

We place direct upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves from 28 isolated radio pulsars by a coherent multidetector analysis of the data collected during the second science run of the LIGO interferometric detectors. These are the first direct upper limits for 26 of the 28 pulsars. We use coordinated radio observations for the first time to build radio-guided phase templates for the expected gravitational-wave signals. The unprecedented sensitivity of the detectors allows us to set strain upper limits as low as a few times 10(-24). These strain limits translate into limits on the equatorial ellipticities of the pulsars, which are smaller than 10(-5) for the four closest pulsars.

Twinning in women under the age of 20 years

A review of twin pregnancies in women under 20 years of age at conception showed a ratio of dizygotic twins to monozygotic twins of 3:2. This is at variance with the ratio previously noted in other age groups.

Rupture of the cervix during prostaglandin termination of pregnancy

A case of uterine rupture following extra-amniotic prostaglandin E2 with a subsequent obstetrical complication is reported.

A case of torsion of the uterus and appendages is reported and discussed.

Triplet pregnancy

A series of 14 triplet pregnancies has been analyzed. The older triplet mother had a better chance of fetal survival than the younger mother. Parity did not appear to have much effect on fetal survival but the maturity of the infants at birth had more influence than did birth weight, on their survival. The interval between the delivery of the second and third infants did not correlate with the poor prognosis for the last infant. Spontaneous breech delivery appeared to have a worse prognosis than assisted breech delivery. There was a high incidence of girls and they appeared to do better than the boys. There was a high incidence of monozygotic twin pairs in these triplet pregnancies.

Carcinoid tumour of the cervix

A case of non-metastatic carcinoid tumour of the cervix is described from a patient without the carcinoid syndrome. The rarity of carcinoid tumour involving gynaecological structures other than the ovaries is discussed and a bried review of carcinoid disease presented.

Pregnancy following poliomyelitis

A review of forty-nine pregnancies in thirty-seven patients who had previously suffered from poliomyelitis found that obstetric complications were proportional to the clinical disabilities of the patient. A simple test of unilateral weight-bearing gives a good clue as to whether pelvic asymmetry is present.

Management of the hyperextended fetal head

Hyperextension of the fetal head in utero is readily detectable by roentgenography and ultrasound scan. Management is determined by presentation of the fetus. There are three types of presentations: face presentation, star-gazing breech presentation, and the flying fetus presentation. Undiagnosed hyperextension of the fetal head is frequently associated with cervical cord injury.

Biological aspects of twin pregnancy in Dundee

A review is presented of 712 twin pregnancies which occurred in Dundee between 1956 and 1971. It shows a falling age of twin reproduction, a changing ratio of mono- to dizygosity and the poor growth rates of both types. Birth weight variations suggest that "crowding" in the uterus may affect the individual growth of each twin, but the combined weight of twins continues to increase to term and shows no obvious sign of restriction.

Duration of effect of treatment of menopausal symptoms by oestrongen fraction

A follow-up study of 17 menopausal patients receiving piperazine oestrone sulphate (Harmogen), the efficiency measured by the effect on plasma oestradiol levels, was conducted in two groups of patients. The first group had undergone an artificial menopause. Clinical relief of symptoms again correlated with the effect of the oestradiol levels, the duration of the effect exceeding the period of therapy by 3 months.
