Foliar Application of Salicylic Acid to Mitigate Water Stress in Tomato

Salicylic acid (SA) is an important plant regulator reported as a mitigator of water deficit in plants, however without a recommendation for use in field conditions. Thus, this research aims to validate the use of SA under field conditions in regions with low water availability. For that, we evaluated CO₂ assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (g_s), transpiration (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and carboxylation efficiency (A/Ci) at 15, 30, and 45 days of continuous stress water deficit, as well as the application of salicylic acid (0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 mM) in tomato plants subjected to continuous water deficit (45 days), in two years (2019 and 2020). The water deficit reduced the A, g_s, E and A/Ci, while the foliar application of SA increased these parameters in all evaluated times, resulting in similar or even higher values than in plants without water deficit. Water deficit caused floral abortion in tomato plants, without the application of SA, reducing the number of fruit production. In contrast, plants that received about 1.3 mM of SA increased A and A/Ci and translocated the photo-assimilates, mainly to flowers and fruits, reducing floral abortion and increasing fruit production. Thus, foliar application of SA was efficient in mitigating the deleterious effects of water deficit in tomato plants regarding the gas exchange and fruit production.

Kinetin establish the volatile chemical profile after rhizome dormancy is released in Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe

The aim of this work was to provide information about kinetin effects on chemical volatile profile of Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe after several days of plant dormancy release. Rhizomes of C. zedoaria were immersed in four kinetin concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150 mg ml^-1, n = 12 by each concentration) for 30 min. After 240 h of treatment, root length (mm), bud break (%) and bud speed index (BSI) were measured, and three rhizomes at 24 h and 240 h were collected for chemical volatile profile analysis by application of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Kinetin does not alter morphological aspects of the bud dormancy releasing, but drastically changes metabolic aspects of volatile production on C. zedoaria rhizomes, by the selection of several monoterpenes, such as camphene, sabinene, isoborneol, borneol, 1,8-cineole. We assume that kinetin application maintain monoterpene production as a consequence of its signaling over dormancy release.

Morfofisiologia da cunhã cultivada sob estresse salino

O experimento foi desenvolvido baseado na importância do fator nutricional da cunhã para animais de grande e pequeno porte, e no crescimento desta forrageira em solos típicos da região semiárida, que geralmente apresentam salinidade natural ou proveniente da ação antropogênica. O experimento foi realizado em vasos com capacidade de 5kg, dispostos em ambiente protegido com insolação plena, no Departamento de Tecnologia e Ciências Sociais (DTCS) da UNEB Campus III em Juazeiro - BA. Avaliouse o efeito de sete diferentes concentrações salinas em níveis crescentes de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0; 2; 4; 6; 8; 10 e 12dS/m), a temperatura ambiente. As análises do cultivo foram realizadas a cada sete dias e observaramse número de folhas, diâmetro do colo da planta, comprimento da planta e teor de clorofila total aos 13; 20; 27; 34 e 40 dias após o início da irrigação com soluções salinas. Os teores de prolina, a relação parte aérea/raiz (PA/Rz), o comprimento radicular e o teor de água foram avaliados no 40º dia do experimento após o início dos tratamentos. Os resultados mostraram que a elevação da CEa afetou todas as variáveis analisadas.
