Hydrometallurgical recovery of silver and gold from waste printed circuit boards and treatment of the wastewater in a biofilm reactor: An integrated pilot application

A hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of gold and silver from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) was experimentally verified and tested at pilot scale. The process comprises four sequential leaching stages; the first two based on HCl, correspond to base metals (e.g. Sn, Cu) removal, while the third is based on HNO3 for Ag leaching and the final on aqua regia for Au leaching. After base metals leaching, the solid residue, enriched in silver and gold about 5 times, contained silver almost quantitively as insoluble AgCl and significant losses (Ag loss <8%) were avoided. The necessary reduction of Ag in the solid phase was achieved with a solution of 0.5 M N2H4 and 3 M NaOH, at 80 °C and S/L ratio 10%. Leaching of silver by 4 M HNO3 was followed by its recovery from nitrate solution by 0.08 Μ N2H4 at ambient temperature with an efficiency of 83%. Gold was leached by aqua regia and quantitively recovered by 0.13 M N2H4 at ambient temperature. Wastewater resulting from the process, rich in nitrate (5 g/L) and chloride (50 g/L), was treated by an effective and novel biological denitrification system tolerating metals at ppm level, to comply with zero nitrate and residual metals discharge guidelines. The overall process requires low reagents and energy input and has zero discharge for liquid effluents. The scheme is appropriate to be applied at local small to medium industrial units, complying with decentralized circular economy principles for metal recovery from electronic waste.

Modeling biological denitrification in the presence of metal ions and elevated chloride content: Insights into abiotic and biotic mechanisms regulating metal bioprecipitation

Biological denitrification is a critical process in which microorganisms convert nitrate to nitrogen gas. Metal ions, such as those found in industrial wastewater, can be toxic to microorganisms and impede denitrification. It is critical to identify the mechanisms that allow microorganisms to tolerate metal ions and understand how these mechanisms can be utilized to improve denitrification efficiency by modeling the process. This study presents a mathematical model of biological denitrification in the presence of metal ions. The model includes key biotic and abiotic mechanisms and is based on pilot scale results. The model predicts the bioprecipitation of metal ions due to pH shift and alkalinity production during the metabolic activity of microorganisms. The model parameters are estimated to fit the experimental results and the mechanisms regulating metal detoxification via biological metal precipitation are presented. The model provides a valuable tool for understanding the behavior of denitrification systems in the presence of metal ions and can be used to optimize these systems for more efficient and effective treatment of industrial wastewater.

Fractionation and leachability of Fe, Zn, Cu and Ni in the sludge from a sulphate-reducing bioreactor treating metal-bearing wastewater

This work presents and discusses experimental results on the characterisation and metal leaching potential of a biogenic, metal-rich sulphidic sludge, generated in a sulphate-reducing bioreactor, operated to treat acidic synthetic solutions bearing Fe, Zn, Ni and Cu. The sustainability of the metal removal bioprocess strongly depends on the fate of the sludge. To propose appropriate management practices, a detailed characterisation of the sludge is necessary. The granulometry, chemical composition and mineralogy of the sludge were initially determined. The mobility of the metals was assessed via a modified Tessier experimental procedure. The leachability of the sludge metal content was determined via a standard compliance method (EN 12457-2) and experiments designed to evaluate the effect of pH and time on metal leaching from the sludge. The sludge metal content sums up to 69.5% dw, namely iron (14.8%), zinc (18.7%), nickel (17.7%) and copper (18.2%) and, based on the criteria set by European Union, the sludge is characterised as hazardous and inappropriate for landfilling without any pretreatment. The sludge consists mainly of very fine poorly crystalline aggregates of Fe, Zn, Cu and Ni sulphides. The fine grain size, the poorly crystalline structure and the oxidation of sulphide upon exposure to water/air render the high metal content of the sludge recoverable.

From hygroscopic aerosols to cloud droplets: The HygrA-CD campaign in the Athens basin - An overview

The international experimental campaign Hygroscopic Aerosols to Cloud Droplets (HygrA-CD), organized in the Greater Athens Area (GAA), Greece from 15 May to 22 June 2014, aimed to study the physico-chemical properties of aerosols and their impact on the formation of clouds in the convective Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). We found that under continental (W-NW-N) and Etesian (NE) synoptic wind flow and with a deep moist PBL (~2-2.5km height), mixed hygroscopic (anthropogenic, biomass burning and marine) particles arrive over the GAA, and contribute to the formation of convective non-precipitating PBL clouds (of ~16-20μm mean diameter) with vertical extent up to 500m. Under these conditions, high updraft velocities (1-2ms^-1) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations (~2000cm^-3 at 1% supersaturation), generated clouds with an estimated cloud droplet number of ~600cm^-3. Under Saharan wind flow conditions (S-SW) a shallow PBL (<1-1.2km height) develops, leading to much higher CCN concentrations (~3500-5000cm^-3 at 1% supersaturation) near the ground; updraft velocities, however, were significantly lower, with an estimated maximum cloud droplet number of ~200cm^-3 and without observed significant PBL cloud formation. The largest contribution to cloud droplet number variance is attributed to the updraft velocity variability, followed by variances in aerosol number concentration.

PM10 composition during an intense Saharan dust transport event over Athens (Greece)

The influence of Saharan dust on the air quality of Southern European big cities became a priority during the last decade. The present study reports results on PM(10) monitored at an urban site at 14 m above ground level during an intense Saharan dust transport event. The elemental composition was determined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (EDXRF) for 12 elements: Si, Al, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, Ti, S, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn. PM(10) concentrations exceeded the EU limit (50 μg/m(3)) several times during the sampling period. Simultaneous maxima have been observed for the elements of crustal origin. The concentrations of all the elements presented a common maximum, corresponding to the date where the atmosphere was heavily charged with particulate matter permanently for an interval of about 10h. Sulfur and heavy metal concentrations were also associated to local emissions. Mineral dust represented the largest fraction of PM(10) reaching 79%. Seven days back trajectories have shown that the air masses arriving over Athens, originated from Western Sahara. Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) revealed that particle agglomerates were abundant, most of them having sizes <2 μm. Aluminosilicates were predominant in dust particles also rich in calcium which was distributed between calcite, dolomite, gypsum and Ca-Si particles. These results were consistent with the origin of the dust particles and the elemental composition results. Sulfur and heavy metals were associated to very fine particles <1 μm.
