Abstract
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant brain tumour. The average survival time for a patient diagnosed with GBM, using standard treatment methods, is several months. Authors of the article pose a direct question: Is it possible to treat GBM solely with radioactive iodine (¹³¹I) therapy without employing the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) gene? After all, NIS has been detected not only in the thyroid but also in various tumours. The main author of this article (A.C.), with the assistance of her colleagues (physicians and pharmacologists), underwent ¹³¹I therapy after prior iodine inhibition, resulting in approximately 30% reduction in tumour size as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Classical therapy for GBM encompasses neurosurgery, conventional radiotherapy, and chemotherapy (e.g. temozolomide). Currently, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib, sunitinib, and sorafenib) are being used. Additionally, novel drugs such as crizotinib, entrectinib, or larotrectinib are being applied. Recently, personalised multimodal immunotherapy (IMI) based on anti-tumour vaccines derived from oncolytic viruses has been developed, concomitant with the advancement of cellular and molecular immunology. Thus, ¹³¹I therapy has been successfully employed for the first time in the case of GBM recurrence.

Abstract
Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a multi-organ disorder characterized by a highly variable clinical presentation depending on the affected organ/s, extent of tumefactive fibroinflammatory lesions, and associated functional impairment. The disease pursues a chronic, relapsing, often asymptomatic course and hence may pose a significant diagnostic challenge. Diagnostic delay can lead to progressive fibrosis and irreversible organ damage resulting into significant morbidity and even mortality. Given its broad clinical spectrum, physicians of all specialties may be the first clinicians facing this diagnostic challenge. Outside the pancreatobiliary system, the head and neck represents the major site of IgG4-RD with variable organ-specific diffuse or mass-forming lesions. In up to 75% of cases, elevated serum IgG4 levels are observed, but this figure possibly underestimates the fraction of seronegative cases, as the disease manifestations may present metachronously with significant intervals. Together with negative serology, this can lead to misdiagnosis of seronegative cases. A standardized nomenclature and diagnostic criteria for IgG4-RD were established in 2012 and revised in 2020 facilitating scientific research and expanding the range of diseases associated with IgG4 abnormalities. In addition to orbital pseudotumor, dacryoadenitis, Riedel thyroiditis, sinonasal manifestations, and rare miscellaneous conditions, IgG4-related sialadenitis is one of the most frequent presentations in the head and neck region. However, controversy still exists regarding the relationship between sialadenitis and IgG4-RD. This review focuses on the clinicopathological features of IgG4-related sialadenitis and its contemporary diagnostic criteria.

Abstract
Polydopamine (PDA)-based nanostructures are used for biomedical purposes. A hybrid drug nanocarrier based on a PDA decorated with polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers G 3.0 (DG3) followed by a connection with glycol (PEG) moieties, folic acid (FA), and drug doxorubicin (DOX) was used for combined chemo- and photothermal therapy (CT-PTT) of liver cancer. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of cancer, and PDA seems to have the ability to both donate and accept electrons. We investigated oxidative stress in organs by evaluating oxidative stress markers in vivo. In the liver, the level of reduced glutathione (GSH) was lower and the level of Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) was higher in the group receiving doxorubicin encapsulated in PDA nanoparticles with phototherapy (PDA@DG3@PEG@FA@DOX + PTT) compared to the control group. The concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in livers, was higher in the group receiving PDA coated with PAMAM dendrimers and functionalized with PEG and FA (PDA@DG3@PEG@FA) than in other groups. Markers in the brain also showed lower levels of GSH in the PDA@DG3@PEG@FA group than in the control group. Markers of oxidative stress indicated changes in the organs of animals receiving PDA nanoparticles with PAMAM dendrimers functionalized with FA in CT-PTT of liver cancer under in vivo conditions. Our work will provide insights into oxidative stress, which can be an indicator of the toxic potential of PDA nanoparticles and provide new strategies to improve existing therapies.

Abstract
Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent regulatory form of cell death characterized by the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation. It plays a critical role not only in promoting drug resistance in tumors, but also in shaping therapeutic approaches for various malignancies. This review aims to elucidate the relationship between ferroptosis and head and neck cancer treatment by discussing its conceptual framework, mechanism of action, functional aspects, and implications for tumor therapy. In addition, this review consolidates strategies aimed at improving the efficacy of head and neck cancer treatment through modulation of ferroptosis, herein serving as a valuable reference for advancing the treatment landscape for this patient population.

Abstract
Hepatocellular damage by the harmful effects of xenobiotics, which increase the production of free radicals, is a widespread phenomenon. The extract from the leaves of Cynara scolymus L. available as an artichoke preparation (natural source) of antioxidants may serve as a potential hepatoprotective factor. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the protective and regenerative properties of artichoke preparation on the liver in three extract doses: 0.5; 1.0; and 1.5 g/kg bw/day. The evaluation was conducted by measuring the levels of oxidative stress parameters, including glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferases (GST), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), SH- group, nitrosylated protein (RSNO), as well as such liver enzymes as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the plasma and liver homogenate of rats with liver damage induced by CCl4 (1 mL/kg bw). Measurements were taken in plasma and liver homogenate. The results have demonstrated that the artichoke preparation, owing to its high antioxidative potential, exhibits protective and regenerative effects on the liver. This is supported by the observation of higher GSH levels in the plasma of rats treated with artichoke extract for two weeks before CCl4 exposure. Furthermore, the artichoke extract has shown regenerative properties, as evidenced by lower ALT, AST, and SOD activity in the group treated with artichoke extract after CCl4 exposure. These findings suggest that the in vivo administration of artichoke preparation may be beneficial for the protection and regeneration of the liver.

Abstract
We present a thorough review of the literature on Riedel thyroiditis (RT) with emphasis on aetiology, diagnosis and management, using the PubMed, Sinomed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. Although the exact aetiology of RT remains obscure, the histopathological features are consistent with a localized form of IgG4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD). Nevertheless, IgG4-RSD as a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder per se rarely affects the thyroid in the context of multiorgan manifestations. The initial diagnosis of RT is based on clinical history and imaging, but confirmation by histopathological examination is mandatory. In contrast to the historical surgical approach, glucocorticosteroid therapy is currently considered first line therapy, in line with the RT currently being viewed as a manifestation of, or analogous to, IgG4-RSD. For disease relapse, immunomodulatory agents (azathioprine, methotrexate, rituximab) can be used.

Abstract
Adequate pain control enhances patients' quality of life and allows a quick return to normal activities. Current pain management practices may contribute to the crisis of opioid addiction. We summarize the evidence that evaluates locoregional interventions to decrease pain and neck discomfort after thyroidectomy. We designed a scoping review. The search strategy was made in the Pubmed/MEDLINE and EMBASE database. We included only systematic reviews and RCTs that compared two or more strategies. Forty-nine publications including 5045 patients fulfilled criteria. Sore throat frequency is higher for endotracheal intubation and topical administration of anesthetic before intubation decreases this. Pre-incisional infiltration of the surgical wound decreases postoperative pain. Bilateral superficial plexus nerve block decreases analgesic requirements during and after thyroidectomy. Wound massage and neck exercises decrease postoperative discomfort. Locoregional interventions significantly impact postoperative pain and may reduce opioid use and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Head and neck cancers (HNC) are among the most common cancers in the world. In terms of frequency of occurrence in the world, HNC ranks sixth. However, the problem of modern oncology is the low specificity of the therapies used, which is why most of the currently used chemotherapeutic agents have a systemic effect. The use of nanomaterials could overcome the limitations of traditional therapies. Researchers are increasingly using polydopamine (PDA) in nanotherapeutic systems for HNC due to its unique properties. PDA has found applications in chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, targeted therapy, and combination therapies that facilitate better carrier control for the effective reduction of cancer cells than individual therapies. The purpose of this review was to present the current knowledge on the potential use of polydopamine in head and neck cancer research.

Abstract
All treatment modalities for head and neck cancer carry with them a risk of adverse events. Head and neck surgeons are faced with significant challenges to minimize associated morbidity and manage its sequelae. Recognizing situations in which a surgical complication is an adverse event inherent to the procedure can alleviate the psychologic impact a complication might have on the treatment team and minimize external and internal pressures. Focusing on the complications that can be effectively modified, future complications can be avoided. Also, some surgical morbidities may not be preventable, necessitating the option to reconsider whether the incidents should be labeled toxic reactions rather than a complication. This discussion highlights some of the areas in which additional research is needed to achieve the goal of minimizing the impact of surgical morbidity.

Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) serve as nanoparticles due to their size, and for that reason, when in contact with the biological system, they can have toxic effects. One of the main mechanisms responsible for nanotoxicity is oxidative stress resulting from the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, oxidative stress biomarkers are important tools for assessing MWCNTs toxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in male rats. Our animal model studies of MWCNTs (diameter ~15-30 nm, length ~15-20 μm) include measurement of oxidative stress parameters in the body fluid and tissues of animals after long-term exposure. Rattus Norvegicus/Wistar male rats were administrated a single injection to the knee joint at three concentrations: 0.03 mg/mL, 0.25 mg/mL, and 0.5 mg/mL. The rats were euthanized 12 and 18 months post-exposure by drawing blood from the heart, and their liver and kidney tissues were removed. To evaluate toxicity, the enzymatic activity of total protein (TP), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), nitric oxide (NO), and catalase (CAT) was measured and histopathological examination was conducted. Results in rat livers showed that TEAC level was decreased in rats receiving nanotubes at higher concentrations. Results in kidneys report that the level of NO showed higher concentration after long exposure, and results in animal serums showed lower levels of GSH in rats exposed to nanotubes at higher concentrations. The 18-month exposure also resulted in a statistically significant increase in GST activity in the group of rats exposed to nanotubes at higher concentrations compared to animals receiving MWCNTs at lower concentrations and compared to the control group. Therefore, an analysis of oxidative stress parameters can be a key indicator of the toxic potential of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Abstract
Alcohol and nicotine (tobacco smoke) are often used together, and taking both addictive substances is associated with an increased risk of certain diseases. It is extremely important to understand the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic mechanisms of the interaction between nicotine and ethanol, which are still not fully understood. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of chronic alcohol consumption on nicotine biotransformation in ethanol-preferring and non-preferring male and female rats. Rats were divided into four groups depending on their alcohol preferences and gender. Nicotine, nornicotine, nicotine N-oxide, cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine, and cotinine N-oxide in rats plasma were determined by LC-MS/MS after five days of exposure to tobacco smoke. A non-compartmental analysis of nicotine and its metabolites was used for pharmacokinetic parameters calculation. Our experimental results showed that the rate of nicotine elimination depends on gender, regardless of alcohol preferences (significantly slower in females than in males). Mean residence timeof nornicotine, cotinine, and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine were significantly higher in alcohol-preferring male rats than in alcohol preferring female rats. In non-alcohol preferring female rats compared to ethanol-preferring female rats, significantly more nicotine N-oxide (fivefold) and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (twofold) reached the general circulation unchanged. Drinking ethanol influenced the elimination of nornicotine and cotinine in male rats. Ethanol consumption was identified as a modifier of nicotine pharmacokinetics and this was gender-dependent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Based on the current state of knowledge, elevated levels of oxidative stress markers may be considered as risk factors for pregnancy complications. The aim of the research was to assess the correlation between selected oxidative stress biomarkers with the occurrence of foetal chromosomal aberration and congenital malformations. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective research lasted for two years. The purpose was to determine serum levels of selected oxidative stress markers, including total protein (TP), glutathione (GSH), S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), nitric oxide (NO), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) at 11-13 + 6 gestational weeks in 38 women with confirmed foetal developmental abnormalities and in 34 healthy pregnancies in order to assess their utility as predictors of abnormal foetal development. RESULTS Serum concentrations of TP (56.90 ± 5.30 vs 69.1 ± 15.30 mg/mL), TEAC (4.93 ± 0.82 vs 5.64 ± 0.74 μM/mL) and GST (15.94 ± 4.52 vs 21.72 ± 6.81 nM/min/mg) were statistically significantly (p < 0.05) lower in the group of patients with developmental abnormalities in the fetus, whereas GSH levels (6.43 ± 1.24 vs 4.98 ± 1.88 nM/mg) were significantly higher, compared to the group of healthy fetuses. There were no differences in the concentration of these markers between chromosomal aberrations and fetal dysmorphia in subjects. A significant difference in odds ratio obtained for GSH (OR = 0.57, 95% CL: 0.40-0.80) indicates that its higher concentration can relate to reduced risk of developmental abnormalities, whereas odds ratio for TP (OR=1.11, 95% CL: 1.04-1.17), TEAC (OR = 3.54, 95% CL: 1.56-8.05) and GST (OR = 1.18, 95% CL: 1.03-1.17) indicate that their elevation may increase the risk of developmental abnormalities CONCLUSIONS: Elevated levels of TP, GST, TEAC and low GSH level may be relevant to predict congenital defects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tobacco smoke constitutes, among others, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic analogs, aromatic amines, N-nitrosamines, volatile hydrocarbons, aldehydes, phenols, miscellaneous organic compounds, metals, and inorganic compounds Tobacco smoking can harm a women's reproductive system and may reduce fertility. The objective of the study was to explore the effect caused by tobacco smoke on the menstrual cycle caused by smoking and second-hand smoke exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was performed on 153 women of reproductive age who received care at the Gynecological-Obstetric Clinical Hospital of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. They were divided into three treatment groups: non-smokers, second-hand smokers, and smokers. Comprehensive assessment of all hormone levels: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), 17β-estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P) in the various phases of the menstrual cycle and with concomitant determinations of serum cotinine concentrations was performed. The menstrual cycle was observed with ultrasonography. RESULTS Cigarette smoking may be an important factor in disrupting reproduction: 1. The increase in estradiol E2 level was accompanied by significantly lowered serum cotinine concentrations in tobacco smokers, 2. In smoking patients, the serum level of LH significantly increased on the first days of the menstrual cycle, 3. The higher levels of P (in the 14th and 21st days) were assumed to be the result of a longer menstrual cycle. CONCLUSIONS Active and passive smoking may be an important contributor to reproductive health issues and deserves a greater focus in health education programs directed towards women of reproductive age.

Abstract
Several reports confirm the deleterious effects of tobacco smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) resulting in changes in the composition of breast milk. The aim of our study was to compare the levels of selected essential, as well as, toxic metals found in colostrum (collected at day 1 ± 2 post-birth) and mature milk (1 month ± 7 days post-birth) of nonsmoking women (n = 52) compared to those found in women who smoke tobacco (n = 51) and women exposed to second-hand smoke during pregnancy and lactation (n = 47). Women's non-smoking or smoking status was determined by their responses to a questionnaire, including questions about others who may smoke in the home environment, and confirmed by measurement of cotinine in the blood serum by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (F-AAS) techniques were used to determine the metal concentrations in colostrum and mature milk previously digested by a microwave mineralizer. We confirmed that exposure to tobacco smoke increases concentrations of heavy metals (cadmium and lead) in colostrum and mature milk. These increased concentrations of heavy metals may disturb the action of bioactive substances necessary for the optimal growth and development of newborns and infants. These findings support the need for increased concern and information to lactating women about preventing their exposure to cigarette smoking and SHS due to the adverse effects of tobacco smoke on breast milk with added risks to their infants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radioiodine therapy (131I) is a standard procedure in the treatment of hyperthyroidism in the course of Graves' disease or toxic nodules. However, the use of 131I in patients with low radioiodine uptake (RAIU) may be controversial. OBJECTIVES To determine the influence of lithium carbonate (Li) on iodine kinetics. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients with hyperthyroidism and low RAIU (< 30%) were divided into 2 groups: a Li(-) group of 305 patients not receiving Li adjuvant therapy and a Li(+) group of 264 patients receiving adjuvant therapy. The serum concentrations of free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were assessed at baseline, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h, and 1, 6 and 12 months after 131I therapy. The RAIU was assessed after 5 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h. RESULTS Levels of fT3 in the Li(+) group compared to the Li(-) group were significantly higher at baseline, lower after 48 h, 72 h, 96 h and 1 month, and did not differ significantly after 24 h, 6 months and 12 months. Levels of fT4 in the Li(+) group compared to the Li(-) group were significantly higher at baseline, lower after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h and 1 month, and not differ significantly after 6 and 12 months. The RAIU in the hyperthyroidism Li(-) and Li(+) groups, respectively, was 11.9 ±5.6% compared to 23.9 ±10.1% (p < 0.001) after 5 h; 25.9 ±8.3% compared to 40.5 ±12.4% (p < 0.05) after 24 h; 7.8 ±8.1% compared to 40.9 ±13.7% (p < 0.05) after 48 h; 26.2 ±10.2% compared to 39.5 ±11.2% (p < 0.01) after 72 h; and 24.7 ±7.1% compared to 37.4 ±10.1% (p < 0.01) after 96 h. CONCLUSIONS Adjuvant therapy with Li in patients with hyperthyroidism caused a significant increase in RAIU and positive changes in the fT3 and fT4 profiles. The use of lithium carbonate prior to the inclusion of 131I in hyperthyroid patients with low RAIU should be considered.

Abstract
Genetically uniform plant material, derived from Lychnis flos-cuculi propagated in vitro, was used for the isolation of 20-hydroxyecdysone and polypodine B and subjected to an evaluation of the antifungal and antiamoebic activity. The activity of 80% aqueous methanolic extracts, their fractions, and isolated ecdysteroids were studied against pathogenic Acanthamoeba castellani. Additionally, a Microtox® acute toxicity assay was performed. It was found that an 80% methanolic fraction of root extract exerts the most potent amoebicidal activity at IC50 of 0.06 mg/mL at the 3rd day of treatment. Both ecdysteroids show comparable activity at IC50 of 0.07 mg/mL. The acute toxicity of 80% fractions at similar concentrations is significantly higher than that of 40% fractions. Crude extracts exhibited moderate antifungal activity, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) within the range of 1.25-2.5 mg/mL. To the best of our knowledge, the present report is the first to show the biological activity of L. flos-cuculi in terms of the antifungal and antiamoebic activities and acute toxicity. It is also the first isolation of the main ecdysteroids from L. flos-cuculi micropropagated, ecdysteroid-rich plant material.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Observational studies have shown that serum 25-OH vitamin D [25(OH)D] is inversely associated with overall cancer risk in many malignancies. We performed a systematic literature review to determine whether vitamin D deficiency is related to head and neck cancer (HNC) etiology and outcome. RECENT FINDINGS The search yielded five prospective studies reporting 25(OH)D levels prior to cancer diagnosis and their effect on the risk of HNC. Eight studies were cross-sectional or case-control studies, in which 25(OH)D levels were only measured after cancer diagnosis. Two studies found an inverse association between 25(OH)D level and HNC risk, while two other prospective cohort studies demonstrated no connection between 25(OH)D and HNC risk. Several studies reported cancer patients to have significantly lower 25(OH)D levels than controls. Associations between 25(OH)D and prognosis and mortality were variable. The link between vitamin D and HNC has so far only been investigated in a few observational, prospective, and case-control studies. Vitamin D deficiency may be more common in HNC patients than in the healthy population. There is no evidence for a causal relationship. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether low 25(OH)D concentrations play a role in the development or outcome of HNCs.

Abstract
E-cigarettes have become increasingly popular in the last decade and are considered less harmful than traditional tobacco products due to the lower content of toxic and carcinogenic compounds. However, this is still a controversial issue. This paper contains a review of previous reports on the composition of e-cigarettes and their impact on the pathogenesis and risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). The objective of the review was to compare the molecular and health effects of e-cigarette use in relation to the effects of traditional cigarette smoking in the upper respiratory tract, and to assess the safety and effect of e-cigarettes on HNC risk. A review for English language articles published until 31 August 2020 was made, using a PubMed (including MEDLINE), CINAHL Plus, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science data. The authors reviewed articles on both toxic and carcinogenic compounds contained in e-cigarettes and their molecular and health effects on the upper respiratory tract in comparison to tobacco cigarettes. The risk of developing head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains lower in users of e-cigarettes compared with tobacco smokers. However, more long-term studies are needed to better address the safety of e-cigarettes.

Abstract
Cartilage and bone injuries are prevalent ailments, affecting the quality of life of injured patients. Current methods of treatment are often imperfect and pose the risk of complications in the long term. Therefore, tissue engineering is a rapidly developing branch of science, which aims at discovering effective ways of replacing or repairing damaged tissues with the use of scaffolds. However, both cartilage and bone owe their exceptional mechanical properties to their complex ultrastructure, which is very difficult to reproduce artificially. To address this issue, nanotechnology was employed. One of the most promising nanomaterials in this respect is carbon nanotubes, due to their exceptional physico-chemical properties, which are similar to collagens-the main component of the extracellular matrix of these tissues. This review covers the important aspects of 3D scaffold development and sums up the existing research tackling the challenges of scaffold design. Moreover, carbon nanotubes-reinforced bone and cartilage scaffolds manufactured using the 3D bioprinting technique will be discussed as a novel tool that could facilitate the achievement of more biomimetic structures.

Abstract
Flavonoids, a ubiquitous group of naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds, have recently gained importance as anticancer agents. Unfortunately, due to low solubility, absorption, and rapid metabolism of dietary flavonoids, their anticancer potential is not sufficient. Nanocarriers can improve the bioavailability of flavonoids. In this review we aimed to evaluate studies on the anticancer activity of flavonoid nanoparticles. A review of English language articles published until 30 June 2020 was conducted, using PubMed (including MEDLINE), CINAHL Plus, Cochrane, and Web of Science data. Most studies determining the anticancer properties of flavonoid nanoparticles are preclinical. The potential anticancer activity focuses mainly on MCF-7 breast cancer cells, A549 lung cancer cells, HepG2 liver cancer cells, and melanoma cells. The flavonoid nanoparticles can also support the anti-tumour effect of drugs used in cancer therapy by enhancing the anti-tumour effect or reducing the systemic toxicity of drugs.

Abstract
Endometriosis, the presence of ectopic endometrium, has an unclear etiology and is commonly associated with endocrine, genetic, and immunological imbalance. This study determined whether immunomodulation by the RESAN vaccine could alter the potentially pathogenic gene expression profiles in the cells of the eutopic endometrium in an animal model of endometriosis. Preventing these changes could inhibit the early development of the illness and support the success of surgical treatment. Wistar rats were divided into three groups: prophylaxis (vaccinated before ectopic endometrium implantation, n = 23), therapeutic (vaccinated at the time of the ectopic excision, n = 23) and control (n = 10). During the first laparotomy, autotransplantation of the endometrium to the peritoneum was performed in the prophylaxis and therapeutic groups. The second laparotomy was carried out three months later in all groups to examine endometriotic foci and adhesions. Suspected endometriosis foci were removed. Three months later, the third laparotomy was performed in all animals, followed by suspected foci excision. Fragments of the eutopic endometrium were collected from all animals during the first and third laparotomies. All samples were analysed by real-time PCR to assess the expression of Bcl2, Bax, Bax/Bcl2 ratio, Mki67, and Tert genes. Endometrial foci were found in abdominal peritoneum at the second laparotomy in 1 animal in the prophylaxis group, compared to 16 animals in the therapeutic group. The prophylaxis group showed a high expression of Bax while the therapeutic group showed high expression of Bax, Tert and Mki67 genes. Additional analysis revealed that throughout the six months of the experiment, the expression of the Bax, Tert, and Mki67 genes decreased significantly in the prophylaxis group, Mki67 gene expression decreased in the therapeutic group, and Tert, Mki67, and Bcl2 gene expression decreased in the control group. The results indicate that immunomodulation affects the balance between apoptosis and proliferation in the eutopic endometrium and may prevent the onset and recurrence of endometriosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The significance of the free radicals is emphasized in the pathophysiology of diabetes and the progression of chronic diabetic complications. Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of developing type II diabetes and intensifies pathophysiological processes during the development of type I diabetes. Tobacco smoke is also additional source of free radicals. Moreover, smoking causes variety of adverse effects on organs, that have no direct contact with the tobacco smoke itself. The objective of the study was to examine the effects of tobacco smoke on the serum concentrations of relevant oxidative stress markers such as total protein (TP), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as renal (creatinine, urea) and liver function (alkaline phosphatase, ALP; alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST) among animals with induced diabetes after administration of a single dose of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg, ip). METHODS The markers of oxidative stress and biochemical parameters were determined using spectrophotometric methods. As a biomarker of exposure to tobacco smoke, cotinine was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). RESULTS Tobacco smoke exposure of diabetic rats was manifested by significantly elevated liver enzymes activity - ALT (p < 0.05) and ALP (p < 0.01), higher creatinine and urea concentration (p < 0.01), lower GSH amount (p < 0.05), and higher GST activity (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Tobacco smoking induce liver and renal damage through the mechanisms including increased oxidative stress.

Abstract
The presence of dominant active compounds in standardised methanol extract from the leaves of Stizolophus balsamita (S. balsamita) was examined using HPLC with a diode-array detector. The extract and three dominant parthenolide derivatives were tested with Serotonin Research ELISA for their ability to inhibit the serotonin release from platelets. The antiserotonin effect of the extract was compared with that of parthenolide, a compound with proven antiserotonin and antimigraine effects. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of natural parthenolide derivatives to inhibit serotonin release from platelets. Izospiciformin, stizolin and stizolicin were analysed along with the standardised alcohol extract of S. balsamita leaves, which also contained four other parthenolide derivatives. All the analysed substances were found to inhibit serotonin release from platelets as compared with the control sample, which had 100% of serotonin released. Izospiciformin had the most significant impact (97.98% serotonin release inhibition). The effect of the methanol extract of S. balsamita on the serotonin release inhibition was also statistically significant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many women who smoke tobacco continue to do so during lactation, and many non-smoking women are exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHS) during the period that she wishes to breastfeed. There are reports documenting the adverse effects of maternal smoking during lactation on their infant's health; however, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these effects are incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES Our study purpose was to examine the influence of tobacco smoke on biochemical markers reflecting the intensity of oxidative stress using concentration of total protein (TP), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), nitric oxide (NO), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) in the plasma, colostrum, and mature milk of women who smoke, those only exposed to SHS, and non-smokers. METHODS Questionnaire data on the tobacco smoking status were verified based on the determination of cotinine by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Relevant markers of oxidative stress and biochemical parameters were determined using spectrophotometric methods. RESULTS We found that tobacco smoking during lactation increases oxidative stress in the mother's plasma, colostrum, and mature milk, and lesser so in those exposed to SHS. Tobacco smoke significantly increase TBARS and decrease TEAC in colostrum and mature milk. In response to ROS generated by tobacco smoke increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GST, GPx and CAT), p < 0.05. DISCUSSION Such exposure to tobacco smoke influences the antioxidant barrier of human colostrum and mature milk that can adversely affect their infant's health. Greater public health awareness of the adverse effects of tobacco smoking during lactation on breast milk quality and its protective effects is urgently needed.

Abstract
The primary objective in modern obstetrics and prenatal diagnosis is to predict risks of congenital abnormalities. The aim of the research was to assess the correlation between selected oxidative stress biomarkers with the risk of foetal chromosomal aberration evaluated at the first trimester screening. A series of studies show that balanced free radical activity and oxidative homeostasis are essential for proper bodily growth and function. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be one of the factors associated with disruption of cell cycle and tissue development, thus leading to developmental abnormalities. That's why it's so important to examine connection between level of oxidative stress and congenital abnormalities. Using ultrasonography examinations between 11-13+6d gestational weeks combined with serum levels of pregnancy associated plasma protein A and human chorionic gonadotropin and spectrophotometric analysis of oxidative stress markers such as glutathione (GSH), S-transferase, S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), protein and nitrites we tried to find correlation between birth defects and oxidative stress status. In conclusion, our analysis suggests that elevated maternal serum levels of protein, S-transferase and TEAC as well as decreased maternal serum levels of GSH and protein correlated with the risk of chromosomal aberrations and congenital developmental defects in a foetus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco smoking is a serious threat to life and health of society. Among the most vulnerable to the toxic effects of tobacco smoke are foetuses and newborns. The objective of the research was to assess the impact of tobacco smoke exposure on oxytocin levels and biochemical oxidative stress parameters during pregnancy and after birth in an experimental model. METHODS In the experiment, exposure to tobacco smoke of gravid and non-gravid rats was monitored. A reliable biomarker of exposure - cotinine - was used in the process and it was determined by means of high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection, which ensured high analytical accuracy and precision. Determination of oxytocin was performed by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of selected oxidative stress parameters: total protein concentration, uric acid, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, protein S-nitrosylation and lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) were measured by spectrophotometric methods. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The effect of prenatal and postnatal exposure to tobacco smoke was a lower medium body mass of rat foetuses and pups. Oxidative stress during pregnancy, additionally intensified by tobacco smoke exposure, led to adaptive changes in properties of plasmatic antioxidant barriers. Moreover, the disturbance of oxidoreductive balance by tobacco smoke affects oxytocin fluctuations, what was observed in this study during lactation period. Therefore, women who smoke may breastfeed their children less frequently and for a shorter period.

Abstract
Ecdysteroids are secondary metabolites, widely distributed in the animal and plant kingdoms. They have a wide range of pharmacological effects in vertebrates, including mammals, most of which are beneficial for humans. Therefore, they have become compounds of interest for the pharmaceutical industry due to their adaptogenic, anabolic, hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolaemic and antimicrobial activities, which are still being researched. Nowadays, ecdysteroids are present as active ingredients in bodybuilding supplements. Because of their complex structures, their chemical synthesis seems unprofitable and impractical. Due to high content of ecdysteroids in many plants, they are primarily obtained by extraction of the plant material. Plant in vitro cultures provide an alternative source of these compounds, helping to avoid problems associated with field production-such as variable yield or dependence on environmental factors, as well as limited availability of natural resources. Plant cell and tissue cultures may be suggested as alternatives for the production of plant biomass rich in pharmaceutically active ecdysteroids. Moreover, the use of common biotechnological strategies, such as elicitation or precursor feeding, may further increase the yield and improve production of these compounds. In this paper, we describe general information about ecdysteroids: their structure, biosynthesis, distribution, role in plants, and we review recent studies on micropropagation of ecdysteroid-producing plants and cell cultures, and potential ability of ecdysteroids enhancement in in vitro cultures.

Abstract
Approximately 10% of women report smoking during pregnancy. The number of breastfeeding women who relapse back to smoking is even greater. Smoking may cause adverse changes to the milk's composition by not only reducing its protective properties, but also by affecting the infant's health. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these adverse effects are not entirely known. This article is a review of previous reports about the effects of smoking on the lactation process, breast milk composition and infant development. A systematic search for English language articles published until 2015 was made, using a MEDLINE data. The key search terms were "smoking and breastfeeding", "smoking and lactation", "smoking and milk composition", "nicotine and breast milk". Studies have shown that nicotine levels in breast milk of women who smoke are three times higher than those in the plasma levels. Breast milk volume is reduced and the duration of lactation period is shorter. Smoking causes adverse changes to the milk's composition by not only reducing its protective properties, but also affecting infants' response to breastfeeding and to breast milk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to assess the cytological picture of the nasal mucosa of neonates born to mothers who are active smokers, passive smokers and non-smokers. METHODS A prospective study was conducted in a group of 86 neonates born between 23 and 41 weeks of gestation. The assignation of neonates to one of the three aforementioned groups was based on a questionnaire concerning exposure to tobacco smoke, and on the concentration of cotinine in maternal urine. A cytological examination was performed using exfoliative cytology with a semi-quantitative evaluation of the cells present in the specimens. Hematological summation equipment was used to assess the number of neutrophils, eosinophils, columnar, goblet, basal and squamous cells out of 500 cells counted. The number of specific cells was expressed as a percentage and a cytogram was created. RESULTS The most common type of cytogram contained neutrophils, columnar cells, and squamous cells. No significant differences were observed between the subgroups. Similarly, there was no correlation between the median of each type of cell and the cotinine concentration in the mothers' urine. CONCLUSION Active and passive smoking during pregnancy do not influence the cytological picture of the nasal mucosa of neonates.

Abstract
Recently, many studies have investigated the relationship between the level of metals in the body and various diseases. The objective of this study was to examine any possible influence of periodontal disease upon the concentration of metals in oral fluid and blood and to explore the usability of applying cluster analysis coupled with the analysis of selected elements in oral fluid, calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), for effectively distinguishing people affected by periodontitis from healthy individuals. The quantification of eight metals in oral fluid and blood samples was performed by two inductively coupled plasma techniques-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Most of the examined elements were detected at elevated concentration in the oral fluid of periodontal patients. However, the differences were statistically significant in the case of three metals: Cu, Mg and Mn (p < 0.05). Approximately, fivefold increase in the concentration of Cu, threefold-elevated levels of Mn and a twofold increase in the concentration of Mg were found in the oral fluid of the periodontal patients compared to the controls. Cluster analysis confirmed the statistical significance of the differences in the level of metals in the oral fluid between the two groups in most cases, plus enabled the correct classification of the subjects into patients and controls. The relationship between concentrations of metals and periodontal disease may in the future serve to prevent the development of such disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Graves ophthalmopathy (GO) is an autoimmune disease associated with Graves disease. Its treatment is largely dependent on the severity and activity of ocular lesions. Particular attention should be given to radioiodine (RAI) therapy. Although its use is a valuable therapeutic option for hyperthyroidism, it may be followed by worsening of GO. OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to analyze how the severity of nicotine addiction affects the response to RAI treatment in patients with GO. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 106 patients (58 smokers and 48 nonsmokers) with mild GO treated with 800 MBq of RAI were included to the study. We assessed the serum levels of thyroid‑stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid hormones, autoantibodies against thyroperoxidase, thyroglobulin, and TSH receptor (TSHR‑Abs), as well as urinary cotinine levels and severity of ophthalmopathy. Analyses were conducted at baseline (before RAI treatment) and 2 and 6 months after the therapy. RESULTS Significant differences in serum levels of TSHR‑Abs were found between nonsmokers and smokers at 2 and 6 months after RAI therapy, whereas there were no differences at baseline. In smokers, there were significant differences in the severity of ophthalmopathy and the concentration of serum TSHR‑Abs assessed at baseline and at 6 months of follow‑up. Six months after RAI therapy, 46.2% of smokers and 4.3% of nonsmokers (P <0.001) progressed from mild to moderate GO. CONCLUSIONS High urinary cotinine levels in smokers were associated with the deterioration of ocular lesions after RAI treatment. A high dose of RAI did not induce an exacerbation of GO in nonsmokers who were administered oral steroid prophylaxis.

Abstract
In experimental and clinical studies, central nicotinic systems have been shown to play an important role in cognitive function. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors also mediate the reinforcing properties of nicotine (NIC) in tobacco products. A variety of studies have shown that acute treatment with NIC or nicotinic agonists can improve working memory function. Moreover, it is known that the monoaminergic system plays an important role in memory function. And there is evidence suggesting that prolonged use of NIC may exert antidepressant action via nicotinic receptors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interactions between a novel antidepressant, venlafaxine (VEN), a blocker of noradrenaline and 5–hydroxytryptamine reuptake sites, and pure NIC in the context of antidepressant and memory function in tobacco smoke exposed and nonexposed rats. The animals were subjected to Porsolt's test for testing antidepressant activity and their memory function (spatial memory) was evaluated in the Morris Water Maze Test. In tobacco smoke non–exposed and exposed rats both single and chronic administration of VEN (20 mg/kg po) shortened immobility time. NIC (0.2 mg/kg sc) significantly reduced immobility time on the 1st, 7th and 14th test days in both non–exposed and exposed rats. Combined VEN–NIC treatment in tobacco smoke non–exposed rats reduced immobility too. This effect of the combination of drugs was significantly stronger as compared to the effects obtained after individual administration of VEN or NIC. In the group exposed to tobacco smoke, joint administration of VEN–NIC induced a significant reduction of immobility as compared to the control and NIC groups. In the Morris Water Maze Test single and chronic administration of VEN, lower values of escape latencies and lower numbers of crossed quadrants were noted in both exposed and non–exposed rats, which indicates improved performance. After administering NIC we could observe improvement of spatial memory in both the exposed and non–exposed group. A similar effect of improvement of spatial memory was observed after joint administration of VEN and NIC. The study results support the involvement of nicotinic systems in memory processes in rats. Memory improvement and antidepressant effects following joint administration of VEN and NIC may depend on nicotinic interactions with monoaminergic systems and VEN may represent a new therapeutic approach to smoking cessation.

Abstract
Dopamine plays an important role in the neuronal regulation of motivation / reward, voluntary movements, cognitive processes and the process of addiction. Disorders of the production and release of dopamine can be the base of the pathomechanism of many diseases. Both nicotine and caffeine are psychomotor stimulants. Caffeine, through inhibition of adenosine, increases the activity of the dopaminergic system, and it shows the reinforcing and the psychomotor effect. Nicotine gets its reinforcing and psychostimulant effects from blocking dopamine uptake and increasing synaptic dopamine release. Nicotine and caffeine affect the release of the dopamine. It is believed that the interaction of these substances may be a synergistic effect on pain perception, voluntary movement functions or behavioral traits.

Abstract
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds, derivatives of Indian hemp, in which tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most important. Marijuana, hashish and hash oil are among those most commonly used in the group. Cannabinoids (marjhuana and hashish) have been used throughout recorded history as effective drugs in treating various diseases and conditions such as: malaria, hypertension, constipation, bronchial asthma, rheumatic pains, and as natural pain relief in labour and joint pains. Marijuana acts through cannabinoid receptors CB 1 and CB2. Both receptors inhibit cAMP accummulation (through Gi/o proteins) and stimulate mitrogen- activated protein kinase. CB1 rceptors are located in CNS and in adipose tissue, digestive tract, muscles, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, gonads, prostate gland and other peripheral tissues. CB2 cannabinoid receptors are located in the peripheral nervous system (at the ends of peripheral nerves), and on the surfaces of the cells of the immunological system. The discovery of endogenous cannabinoids has contributed to a better understanding of their role in the regulation of the intake of food, energetic homeostasis and their significant influence on the endocrine system.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The present study evaluated the effects of smoking on the amount of therapeutic doses of radioiodine ((131)I) given to patients with Graves’ disease (GB). The study also retrospectively analyzed the relationship between the onset of symptoms of thyroid ophthalmopathy (OT) after treatment with (131)I within 2 years and changes of TSHR-Abs levels, and the impact of prednisone administration before and after the therapy on OT development in both smoking and non-smoking patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group included 116 patients, 97 women and 19 men, aged 28 ÷ 77 years (average 51 years) who were diagnosed with GB and treated with therapeutic doses of (131)I. Of the 116 patients treated, 85 patients were given a single dose of (131)I, whereas in 31 patients, due to recurrent hyperthyroidism, there was a need for a second dose of (131)I. In the group of 85 studied patients who received a single therapeutic dose of (131)I, 34 patients were smokers, including 27 women and 7 men, whereas in the group of 31 patients with recurrent hyperthyroidism who received repeated doses of 131I, 21 patients were smokers, 17 women and 4 men. Patients qualified for the therapy with (131)I and diagnosed with mild OT, were given prednisone, administered orally with an initial dose of 0.4 - 0.5 mg/kg daily tapering within 4-6 weeks. RESULTS The results of the study demonstrated that there was a statistically significant relationship (p<0.05) between cigarette smoking and the number of administered therapeutic doses of (131)I in patients with GD. Smoking patients needed to be given the second therapeutic dose of (131)I more frequently. The relationship between the onset of symptoms of OT in patients with GD and the TSHRAb in serum within two years after (131)I administration was highly significant (p<0.0001). The results obtained in our study showed that efficacy of therapy was lower in smokers with GD when compared with non-smokers Since the increased titer of TSHR-Ab was associated with higher risk of OT development, especially in smokers, its routine measurement after (131)I administration could be considered in all treated patients with GD. Steroid prophylaxis should be recommended for each smoking GD patient with mild OT qualified for (131)I therapy.

Abstract
The European Union drew attention to the increased consumption and the reports of adverse reactions to caffeine in recent years. The EU Commission in Regulation No. 536/2013 dated 11 June 2013 expressed concern about the caffeine content in the products. It is important to develop a simple and accurate methods for determining the level of caffeine in the biological material for accurate exposure assessment, as well as in the caffeinated products. The use of saliva as a diagnostic material is painless, non-invasive and does not require the participation of professional medical personnel. The compounds identified in saliva showed relatively high durability. The developed method for the determination of caffeine by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) after extraction of caffeine from saliva by solid phase extraction (SPE) is characterized by the linearity in the concentration range 50 - 2000 ng/mL. This method have low detection (12 ng/mL) and quantification (40 ng/mL) limits and high intra-day (4.87% for low concentration and 2.10% for high concentration) and inter-day (5.84% for low concentration and 2.43% for high concentration) repeatability.

Abstract
Head and neck cancers are one of the most frequent cancers worldwide. This paper attempts to evaluate disturbances of homeostasis of the necessary elements (calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese) and changes in the levels of toxic metals (lead, cadmium, cobalt, chromium VI) in hair of patients with head and neck cancers, as well as people without a diagnosed neoplastic disease. In order to quantify the necessary elements and toxic metals, a method using ICP-MS and ICP-OES techniques had been developed and validated. The studies have shown that patients with head and neck cancer used to drink alcohol and smoked much more frequently than healthy individuals, both in the past and presently. Statistically significant differences in concentrations of average metal content in the group of patients with head and neck cancers compared to the control group were confirmed. Significant differences in metal content between the group of patients with head and neck cancers and healthy individuals were found which enabled distinguishing between the study groups. To this end, a more advanced statistical tool, i.e. chemometrics, was used. The conducted research analyses and the use of advanced statistical techniques confirm the benefits of using alternative material to distinguish the patients with head and neck cancers from the healthy individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A vast majority of people who abuse alcohol are also defined as "heavy smokers". Tobacco smokes induces CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP2A6 isoenzymes, but on the other hand, ethanol activates CYP2E1, which can be important during combined, chronic use of both of them. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of tobacco smoke xenobiotics on ethanol pharmacokinetics and the level of its metabolites in alcohol preferring and non-preferring rats. METHODS Ethanol, acetaldehyde, methanol, n-propanol and n-butanol were determined in whole blood by means of gas chromatography. Cotinine in serum was determined by LC-MS/MS. A non-compartmental analysis (cotinine, acetaldehyde) and Widmark equation (ethanol) were used for pharmacokinetic parameters calculation. RESULTS Ethanol levels were lower in animals exposed to tobacco smoke compared to rats receiving this xenobiotic, without a prior exposure to tobacco smoke. Lower values of the studied pharmacokinetic parameters were observed in the alcohol preferring males compared to the non-alcohol preferring rats. Both n-propanol and n-butanol had higher values of the pharmacokinetic parameters analyzed in the animals exposed to tobacco smoke and ethanol compared to those, which ethanol was administered only once. CONCLUSIONS An increase in maximum concentration and the area under concentration-time curve for ethanol after its administration to rats preferring alcohol and exposed to tobacco smoke are accompanied by a decrease in the volume of distribution. The changes in the volume of distribution may be caused by an increase in the first-pass effect, in the intestinal tract and/or in the liver. The acetaldehyde elimination rate constant was significantly higher in alcohol-preferring animals.

Abstract
In prenatal life the fetus can be exposed to more incentires which affect the mother. In case of both active and passive smoking by pregnant women many pernicious substances contained in tobacco smoke can influence the foetus. The components of tobacco smoke can contribute to various antenatal complications. The aim of present work was to assess if the data given by the patient in anonymous questionnaire go along with the real exposure to components of smoke assessed on the basis of concentration of nicotine metabolite- cotinine in mother's serum and next to assess the risk of development of gestational hypertension and hypotrophy. The biological material was extracted with means of liquid-liquid technique and next we performed laboratory determinations with means of liquid chro- matography with sectrophotometric detection, in which norephedrine is used as inner sample. The study was carried out on 106 women in perinatal period who give birth from single, full term pregnancy. On the basis of questionnaire data considering the concentration of cotinine, the patients were divided into three groups: I group--active smokers (n = 27), II group--passive smokers (n = 32), III group--not exposed to tobacco smoke (n = 41). The average concentration of cotinine in blood serum in the first group was 129.6 ng/ml, second group--5.1 ng/ ml, but in all patients from the control group the concentration of cotinine was below the detection level. Gestational hypertension was diagnosed in 17 women (16%) and hypotrophy of the foetus was diagnosed in 15 patients (14%). Tobacco smoking didn't influence the development of gestational hypertension and hypotrophy showered it is more often observed in women exposed to components of tobacco smoke during pregnancy.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of active and passive maternal tobacco smoking on the parameters of blood flow in the uterine arteries in the third trimester. of pregnancy. The study was performed among 96 pregnant women in a single full-term pregnancy in the third trimester of pregnancy. A questionnaire assessing the status of the concentration of nicotine and nicotine metaboliteotinine in the serum of pregnant. The plasma was extracted technique of liquid-liquid, and then performed laboratory assays using high performance liquid chromatography with spectrophotometric detection using norepinephrine as an internal standard. Based on the concentration of cotinine and interview patients were assigned to three groups: Group 1--patients smoking cigarettes during the entire pregnancy (23), group 2--patients exposed to environmental tobacco smoking (30) and a control group 3--nonsmokers and patients unexposed to passive smoking (43). In the third trimester of pregnancy blood flow in the uterine arteries was performed using "B-mode" technique with function of spectral Doppler. We analized the pulsatility index and resistance index in both uterine arteries, the presence of the indent diastolic "notch" and the scale of the uterine arteries. There were no statistically significant differences with regards to pulsatility index and index of resistance in blood flow in the uterine arteries in different groups of patients. The presence of the indent diastolic "notch" was significantly more frequent among active smokers, compared to women passively exposed to tobacco smoke and non-smoking women (39.1% vs. 20% vs. 4.6%; p = 0.012). The values in the scale of uterine arteries showed no significant difference between groups. Both active and passive smoking had no significant effect on the blood flow in uterine artery in pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract
Periodontal disease, periodontitis, and caries disease, are the two most common disease occurring in the mouth. They affect a large proportion of the world's population. The causes of periodontitis are varied, but the largest group are those caused by infections. The characteristic long asymptomatic period of development of periodontitis, make that patients are not aware of their condition. In-addition, it was observed that tobacco abuse affects the growth of disease and advancing disease state for periodontal diseases. Free radicals and other reactive particles are capable of destroying many cellular structures. They are produced mostly during the breathing process and the immune response or come from the environment. The evolution of living organisms ensure the proper tools to fight against reactive oxygen species after enzymatic and non-enzymatic by antioxidants. Sometimes this protection is not sufficient and the balance between antioxidants and oxidants is compromised. This condition is called oxidative stress. A number of studies looking for a link between oxidative stress, and diseases affecting human and determined that it is an important risk factor in many diseases. Evaluating the parameters of oxidative stress in the saliva allows for effective monitoring of disease progression, evaluation of the therapy and taking preventive measures in a timely manner.

Abstract
Drug use is one of the fundamental problems of the contemporary world. Due to the debilitating effects on physical and mental health and the possibility of impaired social functions, it is extremely important to assess exposure to psychoactive substances among high-risk groups. Taking into account characteristics of adolescence, one of them includes young people. To assess the exposure of young people to drugs, survey research is the most commonly use. To establish reliability of the information indicated by the students, toxicological studies could be a good manner. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is currently one of the most common techniques use for the detection and determination of psychoactive substances in biological material. In practice, an important issue in toxicological studies is the selection of a suitable biological material. Taking into account economic considerations and the method of sampling, the saliva is an increasingly used alternative material. The aim of this study was to assess the exposure of junior high school students on psychoactive substances--designer drugs, through the analysis of surveys and qualitative analysis of saliva taken from teenagers. It has been shown that surveys are a relatively quick and easy form of assessing the exposure of young people to psychoactive substances, but require verification through toxicological analysis of biological material for the presence of psychoactive substances for their reliability. Poznan secondary school students experimented with designer drugs at a similar level as respondents of nationwide survey from 2013.

Abstract
Trace elements have an impact on numerous physiological processes. The monitoring of their levels in the organism allows you to detect not only their deficiencies, but also several illnesses. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of essential elements (calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese) in hair, nails and serum of both patients with laryngeal cancer and healthy people. The determination of six metals was performed by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The concentration of essential elements in hair and nails of the control group was statistically significantly higher than in the group of patients with laryngeal cancer. In the case of serum, differences were found between the patients and controls in respect of the level of three metals. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) revealed the strong and similar clustering behavior of essential elements in hair and nails. The metals did not correlate between two alternative materials. The present study indicated that, using the level of essential elements in hair and nails as a basis, it is possible to distinguish cancer patients from healthy people. The alternative materials are independent of homeostasis and therefore seem to be more useful in the detection of diseases and mineral deficiencies in human than the classical biological materials, such as blood.

Abstract
The paper contain a brief historical introduction about tobacco and smoking trends among women over the years--from cigarettes introduction to the present (years 1840-2014). Particular attention was paid to the historical backgrounds and marketing strategies of tobacco companies, which tried to reach each of women. Moreover, this paper described the dangers of smoking, which have been proven by scientists over the years and the impact of this knowledge on the tobacco industry and cigarettes consumption by women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the hypothesis that exposure to alcohol consumption in movies affects the likelihood that low-risk adolescents will start to drink alcohol. METHODS Longitudinal study of 2346 adolescent never drinkers who also reported at baseline intent to not to do so in the next 12 months (mean age 12.9 years, SD = 1.08). Recruitment was carried out in 2009 and 2010 in 112 state-funded schools in Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, and Scotland. Exposure to movie alcohol consumption was estimated from 250 top-grossing movies in each country in the years 2004 to 2009. Multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regressions assessed the relationship between baseline exposure to movie alcohol consumption and initiation of trying alcohol, and binge drinking (≥ 5 consecutive drinks) at follow-up. RESULTS Overall, 40% of the sample initiated alcohol use and 6% initiated binge drinking by follow-up. Estimated mean exposure to movie alcohol consumption was 3653 (SD = 2448) occurrences. After age, gender, family affluence, school performance, TV screen time, personality characteristics, and drinking behavior of peers, parents, and siblings were controlled for, exposure to each additional 1000 movie alcohol occurrences was significantly associated with increased relative risk for trying alcohol, incidence rate ratio = 1.05 (95% confidence interval, 1.02-1.08; P = .003), and for binge drinking, incidence rate ratio = 1.13 (95% confidence interval, 1.06-1.20; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Seeing alcohol depictions in movies is an independent predictor of drinking initiation, particularly for more risky patterns of drinking. This result was shown in a heterogeneous sample of European youths who had a low affinity for drinking alcohol at the time of exposure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the evaluation of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration as a marker of the inflammatory state in many different thyroid diseases and its dependence on the stage and duration of disease. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 444 randomly selected patients with different kinds of thyroid disease (106 men and 338 women, ranging 18-72 years of age; mean 56.2 ± 5.0 years; median 52 years). Group 1 (G1) comprised 250 patients with hyperthyroidism. Group 2 (G2) consisted of 72 euthyroid patients. Group 3 (G3) consisted of 122 patients with hypothyroidism. Free T4, free T3, and thyrotropin (TSH) levels were measured using the electrochemiluminescent method. Human serum thyroglobulin autoantibodies (Tg-Abs), thyroperoxidase autoantibodies (TPO-Abs), and autoantibodies against the thyrotropin receptor (TSHR-Abs) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. The high-sensitive CRP (Hs-CRP) level (reference range <3 mg/L) was determined with a highly sensitive latex-based immunoassay. The mean value of Hs-CRP in G1 was 3.6 ± 2.8 mg/L, in G2 2.5 ± 1.5 mg/L and in G3 5.9 ± 5.8 mg/L. Hs-CRP (in mg/L) medians, interquartile and the total ranges in G1 were 3.0 (2.0 [0.1-21.0] 4.0); in G2: 2.3 [1.8 (0.2-9.2) 3.2]; and in G3: 4.3 [2.2 (0.3-31.5) 7.8]. We found statistically significant differences (Kruskal-Wallis test) in serum Hs-CRP values between G1 and G2 (P = 0.007), G1 and G3 (P = 0.001), G2 and G3 (P < 0.001). In G1, statistically significant correlation was confirmed between Hs-CRP and Tg-Abs (r = -0.22, P = 0.0016), CRP and TPO-Abs (r = -0.26, P < 0.001), and also between Hs-CRP and TSHR-Abs (r = -0.18, P = 0.02). In the remaining cases, differences between Hs-CRP and TSH levels (r = -0.09, P = 0.16) were not statistically significant. In G2, no statistically significant correlation was observed: Hs-CRP and Tg-Abs (r = -0.18, P = 0.13), Hs-CRP and TPO-Abs (r = -0.17, P = 0.15), Hs-CRP and TSH (r = 0.01, P = 0.91), Hs-CRP and TSHR-Abs (r = -0.19, P = 0.17). In G3, a statistically significant correlation was confirmed between Hs-CRP and Tg-Abs (r = 0.22, P = 0.012), Hs-CRP and TSH (r = -0.28, P = 0.001). No statistically significant correlation was observed between Hs-CRP and TPO-Abs (r = 0.20, P = 0.06) and between Hs-CRP and TSHR-Abs (r = -0.23, P = 0.11). Hs-CRP is increased in various types of hypothyroidism. This is particularly relevant in postpartum thyroiditis and in patients after radioiodine treatment. The impact of this situation on human health requires further research, however, one might assume that some types of thyroid disease may lead to systemic inflammatory reactions that are reflected in elevated CRP levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citalopram (CIT) is an antidepressant drug from the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in which it is the most potent selective inhibitor of serotonin uptake currently available. Patients treated with CIT are often heavy cigarette smokers. Individual pharmacokinetic parameters cannot be directly estimated if full pharmacokinetic profiles are not available for each subject. Sparse sampling is common to experiments using small animals, such as the case that our study is concerned with. METHODS The aim of the study was to demonstrate how the two (non-compartmental analysis (NCA) and nonlinear mixed-effect (NLME)) approaches, used simultaneously, can help overcome specific limitations of these separate methods whilst at the same time preserve their respective benefits. RESULTS Despite the ultra-sparse design, the NLME approach enabled us to develop a pharmacostatistic model with the required covariate--exposition to the tobacco smoke. CONCLUSIONS A tobacco smoke slows down the absorption of the CIT and at the same time makes it more effective. The consistency of results obtained both with NCA and NLME decreased the risk of model misspecification and increased confidence in the final conclusions. Combining NLME with NCA may therefore be recommended for investigating pharmacokinetic properties of the drug in the sparse designs.
