Tiling the Silicon for Added Functionality: PLD Growth of Highly Crystalline STO and PZT on Graphene Oxide-Buffered Silicon Surface

The application of two-dimensional (2D) materials has alleviated a number of challenges of traditional epitaxy and pushed forward the integration of dissimilar materials. Besides acting as a seed layer for van der Waals epitaxy, the 2D materials─being atom(s) thick─have also enabled wetting transparency in which the potential field of the substrate, although partially screened, is still capable of imposing epitaxial overgrowth. One of the crucial steps in this technology is the preservation of the quality of 2D materials during and after their transfer to a substrate of interest. In the present study, we show that by honing the achievements of traditional epitaxy and wet chemistry a hybrid approach can be devised that offers a unique perspective for the integration of functional oxides with a silicon platform. It is based on SrO-assisted deoxidation and controllable coverage of silicon surface with a layer(s) of spin-coated graphene oxide, thus simultaneously allowing both direct and van der Waals epitaxy of SrTiO₃ (STO). We were able to grow a high-quality STO pseudo-substrate suitable for further overgrowth of functional oxides, such as PbZr_1-xTi_xO₃ (PZT). Given that the quality of the films grown on a reduced graphene oxide-buffer layer was almost identical to that obtained on SiC-derived graphene, we believe that this approach may provide new routes for direct and "remote" epitaxy or layer-transfer techniques of dissimilar material systems.

Terahertz Magnetic and Lattice Excitations in van der Waals Ferromagnet VI3

We use the synergy of infrared, terahertz, and Raman spectroscopies with DFT calculations to shed light on the magnetic and lattice properties of VI₃. The structural transition at T_S1 = 79 K is accompanied by a large splitting of polar phonon modes. Below T_S1, strong ferromagnetic fluctuations are observed. The variations of phonon frequencies at 55 K induced by magnetoelastic coupling enhanced by spin-orbit interaction indicate the proximity of long-range ferromagnetic order. Below T_C = 50 K, two Raman modes simultaneously appear and show dramatic softening in the narrow interval around the temperature T_S2 of the second structural transition associated with the order-order magnetic phase transition. Below T_S2, a magnon in the THz range appears in Raman spectra. The THz magnon observed in VI₃ indicates the application potential of 2D van der Waals ferromagnets in ultrafast THz spintronics, which has previously been considered the exclusive domain of antiferromagnets.

Electrostatically Driven Polarization Flop and Strain-Induced Curvature in Free-Standing Ferroelectric Superlattices

The combination of strain and electrostatic engineering in epitaxial heterostructures of ferroelectric oxides offers many possibilities for inducing new phases, complex polar topologies, and enhanced electrical properties. However, the dominant effect of substrate clamping can also limit the electromechanical response and often leaves electrostatics to play a secondary role. Releasing the mechanical constraint imposed by the substrate can not only dramatically alter the balance between elastic and electrostatic forces, enabling them to compete on par with each other, but also activates new mechanical degrees of freedom, such as the macroscopic curvature of the heterostructure. In this work, an electrostatically driven transition from a predominantly out-of-plane polarized to an in-plane polarized state is observed when a PbTiO₃ /SrTiO₃ superlattice with a SrRuO₃ bottom electrode is released from its substrate. In turn, this polarization rotation modifies the lattice parameter mismatch between the superlattice and the thin SrRuO₃ layer, causing the heterostructure to curl up into microtubes. Through a combination of synchrotron-based scanning X-ray diffraction imaging, Raman scattering, piezoresponse force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy, the crystalline structure and domain patterns of the curved superlattices are investigated, revealing a strong anisotropy in the domain structure and a complex mechanism for strain accommodation.

Anisotropic Strain in Rare-Earth Substituted Ceria Thin Films Probed by Polarized Raman Spectroscopy and First-Principles Calculations

Lattice strain in oxygen ion conductors can be used to tune their functional properties for applications in fuel cells, sensors, or catalysis. However, experimental measurements of thin film strain in both in- and out-of-plane directions can be experimentally challenging. We propose a method for measuring strain in rare-earth doped ceria thin films by polarized Raman spectroscopy. We study epitaxial CeO₂ films substituted by La, Gd, and Yb grown on MgO substrates with BaZrO₃ and SrTiO₃ interlayers, where different levels of strain are generated by annealing at distinct temperatures. The films show in-plane compression and out-of-plane expansion, resulting in a lowering from the bulk cubic to tetragonal lattice symmetry. This leads to the splitting of the F_2g Raman mode in the cubic phase to B_2g and E_g modes in the tetragonal lattice. The symmetry and frequency of these modes are determined by polarized Raman in the backscattering and right-angle scattering geometries as well as by first-principal calculations. The frequency splitting of the two modes is proportional to the strain measured by X-ray diffraction and its magnitude agrees with first-principles calculations. The results offer a fast, nondestructive, and precise method for measuring both in- and out-of-plane strain in ceria and can be readily applied to other ionic conductors.

Warburg effect-damping of electromagnetic oscillations

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a central defect in cells creating the Warburg and reverse Warburg effect cancers. However, the link between mitochondrial dysfunction and cancer has not yet been clearly explained. Decrease of mitochondrial oxidative energy production to about 50 % in comparison with healthy cells may be caused by inhibition of pyruvate transfer into mitochondrial matrix and/or disturbed H⁺ ion transfer across inner mitochondrial membrane into cytosol. Lowering of the inner membrane potential and shifting of the working point of mitochondria to high values of pH above an intermediate point causes reorganization of the ordered water layer at the mitochondrial membrane. The reorganized ordered water layers at high pH values release electrons which are transferred to the cytosol rim of the layer. The electrons damp electromagnetic activity of Warburg effect cancer cells or fibroblasts associated with reverse Warburg effect cancer cells leading to lowered electromagnetic activity, disturbed coherence, increased frequency of oscillations and decreased level of biological functions. In reverse Warburg effect cancers, associated fibroblasts supply energy-rich metabolites to the cancer cell resulting in increased power of electromagnetic field, fluctuations due to shift of oscillations to an unstable nonlinear region, decreased frequency and loss of coherence.

Ferroelectricity in antiferroelectric NaNbO3 crystal

Sodium niobate (NaNbO3, or NNO) is known to be antiferroelectric at temperatures between 45 and 753 K. Here we show experimentally the presence of the ferroelectric phase at temperatures between 100 and 830 K in the NNO crystals obtained by top-seeded solution growth. The ferroelectric phase and new phase transitions are evidenced using a combination of thermo-optical studies by variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy analysis, and photoelectron emission microscopy. The possibility for strain-induced ferroelectricity in NNO is suggested.

Lattice modes in paraelectric La1/2Na1/2TiO3 by infrared and Raman spectroscopy

The lattice dynamics of La(1/2)Na(1/2)TiO(3) single crystal have been investigated by far-infrared and Raman scattering spectroscopy. Far-IR reflectivity spectra revealed Slater, Last and Axe modes near 140, 190 and 555 cm(-1), respectively. The frequency of the Slater mode decreases by about 10% on cooling, which is enough to account for the observed increase of the low-frequency permittivity. The results allowed us to discuss the reasons for the suppressed ferroelectricity of the material. Temperature evolution of the Raman scattering intensity of an oxygen octahedra bending mode near 455 cm(-1) suggests a second-order phase transition towards the perovskite aristotype phase near 870 K.

LiTaO3crystals with near-zero birefringence

A study of vapour transport equilibrated crystals of LiTaO3shows periodic fringes that change with temperature. The origin of these fringes and their behaviour is explained in terms of domains with slanted walls. Micro-Raman measurements have been used to determine the Li2O concentration through the crystals, and by comparison with the observed fringe pattern the variation of birefringence with Li2O content has been determined.

Dielectric, magnetic and structural properties of novel multiferroic Eu(0.5)Ba(0.5)TiO(3) ceramics

Dielectric properties of Eu(0.5)Ba(0.5)TiO(3) ceramics were investigated between 10 and 300 K in the frequency range of 1 MHz-100 THz. Permittivity exhibits a strong peak near the ferroelectric phase transition at 215 K. This is mainly due to softening of the lowest frequency polar phonon revealed in THz and infrared spectra. Dielectric relaxation was observed also below the ferroelectric soft mode frequency in the whole investigated temperature region, but it is probably caused by some defects such as Eu(3 + ) cations or oxygen vacancies. This implies that the ferroelectric phase transition has predominantly a displacive character. Raman scattering spectra revealed a lowering of crystal symmetry in the ferroelectric phase and XRD analysis indicated orthorhombic A2mm symmetry below 215 K. The magnetic measurements performed at various frequencies in the field cooled and field heating regime after cooling in zero magnetic fields excluded spin glass behavior and proved an antiferromagnetic order below 1.9 K in Eu(0.5)Ba(0.5)TiO(3).
