Abstract
The calculation of the origin-independent density of the dynamic electric dipole polarizability, previously presented for uncorrelated and density functional theory (DFT)-based methods, has been developed and implemented at the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) level of theory. A pointwise analysis of polarizability densities calculated for a number of molecules at Hartree-Fock (HF) and CCSD clearly shows that the electron correlation effect is much larger than one would argue considering the integrated dipole electric polarizability alone. Large error compensations occur during the integration process, which hide fairly large deviations mainly located in the internuclear regions. The same is observed when calculated CCSD and B3LYP polarizability densities are compared, with the remarkable feature that positive/negative deviations between CCSD and HF reverse sign, becoming negative/positive when comparing CCSD to B3LYP.

Abstract
Collective lattice dynamics determine essential aspects of condensed matter, such as elastic and thermal properties. These exhibit strong dependence on the length-scale, reflecting the marked wavevector dependence of lattice excitations. The extreme ultraviolet transient grating (EUV TG) approach has demonstrated the potential of accessing a wavevector range corresponding to the 10s of nm length-scale, representing a spatial scale of the highest relevance for fundamental physics and forefront technology, previously inaccessible by optical TG and other inelastic scattering methods. In this manuscript we report on the capabilities of this technique in the context of probing thermoelastic properties of matter, both in the bulk and at the surface, as well as discussing future developments and practical considerations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether the low anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) serum level, due to severe endometriosis, was associated with diminished oocyte yield, poor oocyte/embryo quality and reduced in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) clinical outcomes in young patients (<37 years old). PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 50 IVF cycles of patients younger than 37 with severe endometriosis were retrospectively analyzed in a single center between November 2016 and July 2018. The clinical outcome was then compared to a control group of 84 patients with no story of endometriosis and normal AMH value. AMH value was evaluated within three months before the stimulation. In these two groups, number and maturation of retrieved oocytes, embryo quality, and pregnancy outcomes were evaluated and compared using Student's t-test and Fisher's test. RESULTS The number of oocytes retrieved per cycle and the percentage of mature oocytes (MII) were significantly lower (p < 0.001) in IVF patients with severe endometriosis and AMH value ≤ 1.1 ng/ml (Group A; 3.8±2.6 retrieved oocytes, 70% MII) compared to patients without endometriosis and AMH levels > 1.1 ng/ml (Group B; 6.9±4.6 retrieved oocytes, 83% MII). On the other hand, embryo morphology, implantation rate (31% vs. 33%; p = 0.833) and pregnancy rate (50% vs. 49%; p = 1) were comparable in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that younger patients with an impairment of the ovarian reserve due to severe endometriosis, displayed a diminished oocyte yield but not a reduction in embryo quality and pregnancy outcomes. These results suggest that serum AMH levels should not be adopted as a criterion for discouraging these patients from undergoing IVF/ICSI treatments.

Abstract
In vitro models aim to recapitulate the in vivo situation. To more closely mimic the knee joint environment, current in vitro models need improvements to reflect the complexity of the native tissue. High molecular weight hyaluronan (hMwt HA) is one of the most abundant bioactive macromolecules in healthy synovial fluid, while shear and dynamic compression are two joint-relevant mechanical forces. The present study aimed at investigating the concomitant effect of joint-simulating mechanical loading (JSML) and hMwt HA-supplemented culture medium on the chondrogenic differentiation of primary human bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs). hBM-MSC chondrogenesis was investigated over 28 d at the gene expression level and total DNA, sulphated glycosaminoglycan, TGF-β1 production and safranin O staining were evaluated. The concomitant effect of hMwt HA culture medium and JSML significantly increased cartilage-like matrix deposition and sulphated glycosaminoglycan synthesis, especially during early chondrogenesis. A stabilisation of the hBM-MSC-derived chondrocyte phenotype was observed through the reduced upregulation of the hypertrophic marker collagen X and an increase in the chondrogenic collagen type II/X ratio. A combination of JSML and hMwt HA medium better reflects the complexity of the in vivo synovial joint environment. Thus, JSML and hMwt HA medium will be two important features for joint-related culture models to more accurately predict the in vivo outcome, therefore reducing the need for animal studies. Reducing in vitro artefacts would enable a more reliable prescreening of potential cartilage repair therapies.

Abstract
When a liquid is cooled to produce a glass its dynamics, dominated by the structural relaxation, become very slow, and at the glass-transition temperature Tg its characteristic relaxation time is about 100 s. At slightly elevated temperatures (~1.2 Tg) however, a second process known as the Johari-Goldstein relaxation, βJG, decouples from the structural one and remains much faster than it down to Tg. While it is known that the βJG-process is strongly coupled to the structural relaxation, its dedicated role in the glass-transition remains under debate. Here we use an experimental technique that permits us to investigate the spatial and temporal properties of the βJG relaxation, and give evidence that the molecules participating in it are highly mobile and spatially connected in a system-spanning, percolating cluster. This correlation of structural and dynamical properties provides strong experimental support for a picture, drawn from theoretical studies, of an intermittent mosaic structure in the deeply supercooled liquid phase. The Johari-Goldstein relaxation is a precursor of the glass transition in liquids. Caporaletti et al. use time-dependent interferometry data to substantiate its suggested structural appearance as a globally percolating, fluctuating mosaic.

Abstract
We introduce a setup to measure high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering at the High Energy Density scientific instrument at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). The setup uses the Si (533) reflection in a channel-cut monochromator and three spherical diced analyzer crystals in near-backscattering geometry to reach a high spectral resolution. An energy resolution of 44 meV is demonstrated for the experimental setup, close to the theoretically achievable minimum resolution. The analyzer crystals and detector are mounted on a curved-rail system, allowing quick and reliable changes in scattering angle without breaking vacuum. The entire setup is designed for operation at 10 Hz, the same repetition rate as the high-power lasers available at the instrument and the fundamental repetition rate of the European XFEL. Among other measurements, it is envisioned that this setup will allow studies of the dynamics of highly transient laser generated states of matter.

Abstract
We present a method to determine the bulk temperature of a single crystal diamond sample at an X-Ray free electron laser using inelastic X-ray scattering. The experiment was performed at the high energy density instrument at the European XFEL GmbH, Germany. The technique, based on inelastic X-ray scattering and the principle of detailed balance, was demonstrated to give accurate temperature measurements, within [Formula: see text] for both room temperature diamond and heated diamond to 500 K. Here, the temperature was increased in a controlled way using a resistive heater to test theoretical predictions of the scaling of the signal with temperature. The method was tested by validating the energy of the phonon modes with previous measurements made at room temperature using inelastic X-ray scattering and neutron scattering techniques. This technique could be used to determine the bulk temperature in transient systems with a temporal resolution of 50 fs and for which accurate measurements of thermodynamic properties are vital to build accurate equation of state and transport models.

Abstract
Residual stresses are well-known companions of all glassy materials. They affect and, in many cases, even strongly modify important material properties like the mechanical response and the optical transparency. The mechanisms through which stresses affect such properties are, in many cases, still under study, and their full understanding can pave the way to a full exploitation of stress as a primary control parameter. It is, for example, known that stresses promote particle mobility at small length scales, e.g., in colloidal glasses, gels, and metallic glasses, but this connection still remains essentially qualitative. Exploiting a preparation protocol that leads to colloidal glasses with an exceptionally directional built-in stress field, we characterize the stress-induced dynamics and show that it can be visualized as a collection of "flickering," mobile regions with linear sizes of the order of ≈20 particle diameters (≈2 μm here) that move cooperatively, displaying an overall stationary but locally ballistic dynamics.

Abstract
Understanding the glass transition requires getting the picture of the dynamical processes that intervene in it. Glass-forming liquids show a characteristic decoupling of relaxation processes when they are cooled down towards the glassy state. The faster (βJG) process is still under scrutiny, and its full explanation necessitates information at the microscopic scale. To this aim, nuclear γ-resonance time-domain interferometry (TDI) has been utilized to investigate 5-methyl-2-hexanol, a hydrogen-bonded liquid with a pronounced βJG process as measured by dielectric spectroscopy. TDI probes in fact the center-of-mass, molecular dynamics at scattering-vectors corresponding to both inter- and intra-molecular distances. Our measurements demonstrate that, in the undercooled liquid phase, the βJG relaxation can be visualized as a spatially-restricted rearrangement of molecules within the cage of their closest neighbours accompanied by larger excursions which reach out at least the inter-molecular scale and are related to cage-breaking events. In-cage rattling and cage-breaking processes therefore coexist in the βJG relaxation.

Abstract
Advances in developing ultrafast coherent sources operating at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray wavelengths allow the extension of nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths. Here, we describe EUV transient grating spectroscopy, in which two crossed femtosecond EUV pulses produce spatially periodic nanoscale excitations in the sample and their dynamics is probed via diffraction of a third time-delayed EUV pulse. The use of radiation with wavelengths down to 13.3 nm allowed us to produce transient gratings with periods as short as 28 nm and observe thermal and coherent phonon dynamics in crystalline silicon and amorphous silicon nitride. This approach allows measurements of thermal transport on the ~10-nm scale, where the two samples show different heat transport regimes, and can be applied to study other phenomena showing nontrivial behaviors at the nanoscale, such as structural relaxations in complex liquids and ultrafast magnetic dynamics.

Abstract
Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: The elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns, which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double "slits" in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

Abstract
We describe a setup for performing inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) endstation of the Linac Coherent Light Source. This technique is capable of performing high-, meV-resolution measurements of dynamic ion features in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials. A four-bounce silicon (533) monochromator was used in conjunction with three silicon (533) diced crystal analyzers to provide an energy resolution of ∼50 meV over a range of ∼500 meV in single shot measurements. In addition to the instrument resolution function, we demonstrate the measurement of longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in polycrystalline diamond. Furthermore, this setup may be combined with the high intensity laser drivers available at MEC to create warm dense matter and subsequently measure ion acoustic modes.

Abstract
The development of free electron laser (FEL) sources has provided an unprecedented bridge between the scientific communities working with ultrafast lasers and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray radiation. Indeed, in recent years an increasing number of FEL-based applications have exploited methods and concepts typical of advanced optical approaches. In this context, we recently used a seeded FEL to demonstrate a four-wave-mixing (FWM) process stimulated by coherent XUV radiation, namely the XUV transient grating (X-TG). We hereby report on X-TG measurements carried out on a sample of silicon nitride (Si3N4). The recorded data bears evidence for two distinct signal decay mechanisms: one occurring on a sub-ps timescale and one following slower dynamics extending throughout and beyond the probed timescale range (100 ps). The latter is compatible with a slower relaxation (time decay > ns), that may be interpreted as the signature of thermal diffusion modes. From the peak intensity of the X-TG signal we could estimate a value of the effective third-order susceptibility which is substantially larger than that found in SiO2, so far the only sample with available X-TG data. Furthermore, the intensity of the time-coincidence peak shows a linear dependence on the intensity of the three input beams, indicating that the measurements were performed in the weak field regime. However, the timescale of the ultrafast relaxation exhibits a dependence on the intensity of the XUV radiation. We interpreted the observed behaviour as the generation of a population grating of free-electrons and holes that, on the sub-ps timescale, relaxes to generate lattice excitations. The background free detection inherent to the X-TG approach allowed the determination of FEL-induced electron dynamics with a sensitivity largely exceeding that of transient reflectivity and transmissivity measurements, usually employed for this purpose.

Abstract
An end-station for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and (resonant) X-ray emission spectroscopy at beamline ID20 of ESRF - The European Synchrotron is presented. The spectrometer hosts five crystal analysers in Rowland geometry for large solid angle collection and is mounted on a rotatable arm for scattering in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The spectrometer is optimized for high-energy-resolution applications, including partial fluorescence yield or high-energy-resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy and the study of elementary electronic excitations in solids. In addition, it can be used for non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements of valence electron excitations.

Prevalence and Correlates of Anemia and Uncontrolled Anemia in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients – The Campania Dialysis Registry. Int J Artif Organs 2018. Abstract
Background This study investigated prevalence and correlates of anemia and uncontrolled anemia in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods A cross-sectional analysis was performed on registry data for 2,746 chronic (<6 months) hemodialysis patients aged 25–84. Data collection included years of dialysis, hours of dialysis/wk, disease causing hemodialysis, body mass index (BMI), erythropoietin (EPO) treatment, hemoglobin, markers of viral hepatitis, serum albumin, calcium, and phosphorus. Results Prevalence was 88.7% for anemia (hemoglobin <11 g/100 mL and EPO treatment at any Hb level), 39.4% for uncontrolled anemia (hemoglobin<11 g/100 mL). Gender, years of dialysis, hereditary cystic kidney disease (HCKD), and low BMI (<24 kg/m2) were independent correlates of anemia (P<0.001). Gender, HCKD, low BMI, serum albumin and calcium were independent correlates of uncontrolled anemia (P<0.05). An interaction was found between age (not correlated with anemia and uncontrolled anemia) and the association of gender with uncontrolled anemia (P<0.05). EPO doses were higher in patients with high prevalence of uncontrolled anemia than in patients with low prevalence (i.e., women vs men, other diseases vs HCKD, low vs not-low BMI, P<0.01). Gender, years of dialysis, HCKD, BMI, serum albumin, and calcium were independent correlates of the hemoglobin/EPO dose ratio in patients on EPO treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion Anemia and uncontrolled anemia are more frequent in hemodialysis patients with short-term dialysis, diseases other than HCKD, low BMI, and female gender. Gender effect was lower in elderly patients. Uncontrolled anemia was also associated with low serum albumin and calcium, suggesting that these parameters are indices of EPO resistance.

Abstract
Time-domain interferometry (TDI) based on nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation by Mössbauer nuclei is a promising technique to study slow dynamics at the interatomic length scale. In order to improve the efficiency of this technique, a new TDI scheme is developed involving the use of a nuclear absorber with a two-line energy spectrum combined with a single-line spectrum. Different from other TDI setups, the issue of external vibrations is much reduced since the two absorbers are at rest and no velocity transducer is used. This allows measuring beating patterns with satisfying statistical accuracy and contrast up to 350 ns. We report here the characterization of the experimental setup necessary for the implementation of this new scheme. The model required for the description of the beating pattern produced by a three-line spectrum system is also discussed in detail. Finally, we report some results for the dynamics of the prototypical glass-former ortho-terphenyl to demonstrate the possibilities offered by this new scheme.

Abstract
We present experimental evidence for the different mechanisms driving the fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) in disordered photonic systems. We establish a clear link between the microscopic structure of the material and the frequency correlation function of LDOS accessed by a near-field hyperspectral imaging technique. We show, in particular, that short- and long-range frequency correlations of LDOS are controlled by different physical processes (multiple or single scattering processes, respectively) that can be-to some extent-manipulated independently. We also demonstrate that the single scattering contribution to LDOS fluctuations is sensitive to subwavelength features of the material and, in particular, to the correlation length of its dielectric function. Our work paves a way towards complete control of statistical properties of disordered photonic systems, allowing for designing materials with predefined correlations of LDOS.

Abstract
An end-station for X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy at beamline ID20 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is described. This end-station is dedicated to the study of shallow core electronic excitations using non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. The spectrometer has 72 spherically bent analyzer crystals arranged in six modular groups of 12 analyzer crystals each for a combined maximum flexibility and large solid angle of detection. Each of the six analyzer modules houses one pixelated area detector allowing for X-ray Raman scattering based imaging and efficient separation of the desired signal from the sample and spurious scattering from the often used complicated sample environments. This new end-station provides an unprecedented instrument for X-ray Raman scattering, which is a spectroscopic tool of great interest for the study of low-energy X-ray absorption spectra in materials under in situ conditions, such as in operando batteries and fuel cells, in situ catalytic reactions, and extreme pressure and temperature conditions.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The concentrations of 14 essential and nonessential trace elements were determined in fish from Lake Tshangalele, Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo. This province has been a place of intensive mining activities for centuries, which have increased in recent years, due to the use of metals such as copper and cobalt for the industries of fast-growing countries. Lake Tshangalele, which receives effluents from metallurgical and mining plants in Likasi, is home to several fish species that are an important part of the diet of the local population, and, therefore, it constitutes a relevant site for documenting the human exposure to metals as a result of a fish diet. The highest concentrations (median levels, dry weight) of cobalt (7.25mgkg(-1)), copper (88.1mgkg(-1)), iron (197.5mgkg(-1)), manganese (65.35mgkg(-1)), zinc (122.9mgkg(-1)) and aluminum (135.4mgkg(-1)) were found in fish collected closest to the copper mining plant, with decreasing concentrations along the lake, up to the dam. In the most contaminated fish samples, values of up to 270.1mgkg(-1) for Al, 173.1mgkg(-1) for Cu, 220.9mgkg(-1) for Zn, 211.0mgkg(-1) for Mn, 324.2mgkg(-1) for Fe, 15.1mgkg(-1) for Co, 4.2mgkg(-1) for Cr, 1.6mgkg(-1) for Cd, 1.9mgkg(-1) for Pb, and 1.8mgkg(-1) for Ni were found. Metal contamination from mining activity resulted in being of great concern because of potential health risks to the local inhabitants due to the consumption of heavily contaminated fish. CAPSULE High levels of metals, especially cobalt, aluminum, iron, manganese, zinc and cadmium were found in fish from Tshangalele water system.

Abstract
The onset of delayed infection after lower third molar germectomy is influenced by the amount of distal space. This retrospective study aimed to determine whether the incidence of delayed onset infection is related to the space distal to the second molar. The ratio between the distal space and the crown width, measured according to the Ganss protocol on panoramic radiographs, was obtained for 218 surgical germectomies performed for orthodontic reasons in 134 patients. A delayed onset infection occurred following 20 germectomies at between 2 and 8 weeks after surgery; purulent exudates from the alveolus and swelling were present. In 16 of the 20 cases of infection, a Ganss ratio of <0.5 showed the almost complete absence of space distal to the second molar. This study found that the distal space was significantly and inversely correlated with delayed onset infection (P=0.004). From a clinical point of view, it is important for the surgeon to be aware that a higher Ganss ratio may indicate that a delayed onset infection is less likely to occur and that a lower Ganss ratio could indicate a greater likelihood of this type of infection, so that the patient can be properly informed.

Abstract
Mass stranding of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) is a rare event in the Mediterranean Sea. In September 2014, a pod of seven sperm whales became stranded along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. This is the seventh occurrence of this type since 1555 in this sea basin. Total concentrations of mercury (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) were measured from brain, muscle, liver and kidney of three female sperm whales, which died in this event. Analyses showed considerable, age-dependent variations in Hg and Se concentrations in the different organs. The contamination levels of T-Hg in the liver (up to 200 mg kg(-1)) and brain (up to 21 mg kg(-1)) samples were markedly higher than those in the kidney and muscle samples. The liver and brain also showed the highest Se levels. Se:Hg molar ratios ⩾1 were observed in all the organs of the three sperm whales, suggesting that Se could protect the animals from Hg toxicity. The risk of Hg-associated neurotoxicity was assessed by comparing our values to thresholds set for neurotoxicity in mammals, and the role of Se in the detoxification process of T-Hg/MeHg is discussed herein.

Abstract
Tobacco smoke is considered to be a major risk factor in the development of cardiac diseases and lung cancer. It has also been shown that periodontitis is more prevalent and more severe in smokers than in non-smokers. Nicotine, the major pyridine alkaloid in tobacco, has been shown to participate in periodontal disease, exerting both local and systemic effects. In the present study, the effects of nicotine (6μg/ml, 60μg/ml and 600μg/ml) on human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) were assessed by using various exposure protocols. The responses of HGF cultures obtained from smokers and non-smokers were compared to those found when using a continuous cell line (L-929). Neutral red uptake (NRU) and the measurement of DNA content with bis-benzimide dye were used to assess cell viability and cell number, respectively. NRU was the most sensitive technique for the detection of cytotoxic effects. L-929 cells were found to be affected by nicotine in the NRU assay, with a strong cytotoxic effect with 600μg/ml nicotine, and a "response" with 60μg/ml nicotine when prolonged or double challenge was applied. Non-smoker HGF and smoker HGF reacted to nicotine in different ways, depending on the concentrations and the exposure times used, but had identical reactions following double exposure. With the Hoechst DNA assay, 600μg/ml nicotine was found to affect the growth of non-smoker HGF after long or repeated exposure, while smoker HGF were affected only by repeated exposure; growth of L-929 cells was not affected. It was concluded that HGF from smokers are able to sustain higher concentrations of nicotine without adverse effects than are non-smoker HGF and L-929 cells. If this occurs in vivo, nicotine would not be considered to be a major toxicant to HGF in smokers.

Abstract
The terahertz dynamics of human cells of the U937 line and their chromatin has been investigated by high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. To highlight its dynamical features in situ, nuclear DNA has been stained by uranyl-acetate salt. The general behavior of the collective dynamics of the whole cell is quite similar to that of bulk water, with a nearly wavevector-independent branch located at about 5 meV and a propagating mode with a linear trend corresponding to a speed of sound of 2900 ± 100 m/s. We provide the first experimental evidence for the existence of two branches also in the dispersion curves of chromatin. The high-energy mode displays an acoustic-like behavior with a sound velocity similar to unstained cells, but in this case the branch likely originates from the superposition of intramolecular DNA optic modes. A low-energy optic-like branch, distinctive of the chromatin moiety, is found at about 2.5 meV.

Abstract
In CaIrO3, electronic correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and tetragonal crystal field splitting are predicted to be of comparable strength. However, the nature of its ground state is still an object of debate, with contradictory experimental and theoretical results. We probe the ground state of CaIrO3 and assess the effective tetragonal crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling at play in this system by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We conclude that insulating CaIrO3 is not a j(eff) = 1/2 iridate and discuss the consequences of our finding to the interpretation of previous experiments. In particular, we clarify how the Mott insulating state in iridates can be readily extended beyond the j(eff) = 1/2 ground state.

Abstract
We report a study on the temperature dependence of charge-neutral crystal field (dd) excitations in cupric oxide, using nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy. Thanks to a very high-energy resolution (ΔE = 60 meV), we observe thermal effects on the dd excitation spectrum fine structure between temperatures of 10-320 K. The spectra broaden considerably with increasing temperature, consistently with an enhancement of the coupling between crystal field excitations and the temperature-dependent continuum of states above the band gap. We discuss this and other mechanisms that may explain this temperature dependence.

Abstract
We report the observation, by means of high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, of an unusually large temperature dependence of the sound attenuation of a network glass at terahertz frequency, an unprecedentedly observed phenomenon. The anharmonicity can be ascribed to the interaction between the propagating acoustic wave and the bath of thermal vibrations. At low temperatures the sound attenuation follows a Rayleigh-Gans scattering law. As the temperature is increased the anharmonic process sets in, resulting in an almost quadratic frequency dependence of the damping in the entire frequency range. We show that the temperature variation of the sound damping accounts quantitatively for the temperature dependence of the density of vibrational states.

Abstract
We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of SmFe(1-x)RuxAsO0.85F0.15 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.25, 0.33, 0.5) by high-resolution x-ray absorption and x-ray emission spectroscopy. The local Fe magnetic moment (μ) tends to decrease for a small Ru substitution, but it shows a clear increase with further substitution. It appears that impurity scattering prevails in reducing the μ with small Ru substitution due to an extended Ru d-band. A nanoscale phase separation, that decouples the FeAs layers from the spacer layers, drives the increase of μ at higher Ru substitution. The results provide important information on nanoscale phase separation due to isoelectronic substitution in the active layers of iron-based 1111-superconductors and its effect on the local magnetic properties.

Abstract
Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy is employed to measure the size of the interstitial void spaces characterizing the structure of a set of permanently densified SiO2 glasses. The average volume of the voids is markedly affected by the densification process and linearly shrinks by almost an order of magnitude after a relative density variation of 22%. In addition, x-ray diffraction shows that this change of density does not modify appreciably the short range order, which remains organized in SiO4 tetrahedra. These results strongly suggest a porous medium description for v-SiO2 glasses where the compressibility and the medium range order are dominated by the density variation of the voids volume up to densities close to that of α-quartz.

Abstract
We measured the density of vibrational states (DOS) and the specific heat of various glassy and crystalline polymorphs of SiO2. The typical (ambient) glass shows a well-known excess of specific heat relative to the typical crystal (α-quartz). This, however, holds when comparing a lower-density glass to a higher-density crystal. For glassy and crystalline polymorphs with matched densities, the DOS of the glass appears as the smoothed counterpart of the DOS of the corresponding crystal; it reveals the same number of the excess states relative to the Debye model, the same number of all states in the low-energy region, and it provides the same specific heat. This shows that glasses have higher specific heat than crystals not due to disorder, but because the typical glass has lower density than the typical crystal.

Abstract
The resonant x-ray scattering (magnetic elastic, RXMS, and inelastic, RIXS) of Ir4+ at the L2,3 edges relevant to spin-orbit Mott insulators A(n+1)Ir(n)O(3n+1) (A = Sr, Ba, etc.) are calculated using a single-ion model which treats the spin-orbit and tetragonal crystal-field terms on an equal footing. Both RXMS and RIXS in the spin-flip channel are found to display a nontrivial dependence on the direction of the magnetic moment, μ. Crucially, we show that for μ in the ab plane, RXMS in the cross-polarized channel at the L2 edge is zero irrespective of the tetragonal crystal field; spin-flip RIXS, relevant to measurements of magnons, behaves reciprocally, being zero at L2 when μ is perpendicular to the ab plane. Our results have important implications for the assignment of a j(eff) = 1/2 ground state on the basis of resonant x-ray experiments.

Abstract
We investigate the temperature dependence of the Yb valence in YbMn6Ge1.8Sn4.2 and YbMn6Ge1.6Sn4.4 using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments. Yb is found to be in an intermediate valent state in the whole investigated temperature range (10-450 K). We thus prove that the unusually high magnetic ordering temperature of Yb (∼60 and 90 K for x=4.2 and 4.4, respectively) involves an intermediate valent Yb, an unprecedentedly observed phenomenon. Further, an anomalous increase in the Yb valence is observed upon cooling. A scenario is proposed to explain this unusual behavior. It is based on the presence of magnetically ordered Mn moments and on an Anderson Hamiltonian with a Zeeman term modeling the magnetic interactions.

Abstract
We report a detailed analysis of the dynamic structure factor of glassy sorbitol by using inelastic X-ray scattering and previously measured light scattering data [B. Ruta, G. Monaco, F. Scarponi, and D. Fioretto, Philos. Mag. 88, 3939 (2008)]. The thus obtained knowledge on the density-density fluctuations at both the mesoscopic and macroscopic length scale has been used to address two debated topics concerning the vibrational properties of glasses. The relation between the acoustic modes and the universal boson peak (BP) appearing in the vibrational density of states of glasses has been investigated, also in relation with some recent theoretical models. Moreover, the connection between the elastic properties of glasses and the slowing down of the structural relaxation process in supercooled liquids has been scrutinized. For what concerns the first issue, it is here shown that the wave vector dependence of the acoustic excitations can be used, in sorbitol, to quantitatively reproduce the shape of the boson peak, supporting the relation between BP and acoustic modes. For what concerns the second issue, a proper study of elasticity over a wide spatial range is shown to be fundamental in order to investigate the relation between elastic properties and the slowing down of the dynamics in the corresponding supercooled liquid phase.

Abstract
Disrupting inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor (IP3R)/B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) complexes using a cell-permeable peptide (stabilized TAT-fused IP3R-derived peptide (TAT-IDPS)) that selectively targets the BH4 domain of Bcl-2 but not that of B-cell lymphoma 2-extra large (Bcl-Xl) potentiated pro-apoptotic Ca2+ signaling in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells. However, the molecular mechanisms rendering cancer cells but not normal cells particularly sensitive to disrupting IP3R/Bcl-2 complexes are poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effect of TAT-IDPS in a more heterogeneous Bcl-2-dependent cancer model using a set of ‘primed to death' diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DL-BCL) cell lines containing elevated Bcl-2 levels. We discovered a large heterogeneity in the apoptotic responses of these cells to TAT-IDPS with SU-DHL-4 being most sensitive and OCI-LY-1 being most resistant. This sensitivity strongly correlated with the ability of TAT-IDPS to promote IP3R-mediated Ca2+ release. Although total IP3R-expression levels were very similar among SU-DHL-4 and OCI-LY-1, we discovered that the IP3R2-protein level was the highest for SU-DHL-4 and the lowest for OCI-LY-1. Strikingly, TAT-IDPS-induced Ca2+ rise and apoptosis in the different DL-BCL cell lines strongly correlated with their IP3R2-protein level, but not with IP3R1-, IP3R3- or total IP3R-expression levels. Inhibiting or knocking down IP3R2 activity in SU-DHL-4-reduced TAT-IDPS-induced apoptosis, which is compatible with its ability to dissociate Bcl-2 from IP3R2 and to promote IP3-induced pro-apoptotic Ca2+ signaling. Thus, certain chronically activated B-cell lymphoma cells are addicted to high Bcl-2 levels for their survival not only to neutralize pro-apoptotic Bcl-2-family members but also to suppress IP3R hyperactivity. In particular, cancer cells expressing high levels of IP3R2 are addicted to IP3R/Bcl-2 complex formation and disruption of these complexes using peptide tools results in pro-apoptotic Ca2+ signaling and cell death.

Abstract
The vibrational dynamics of a permanently densified silica glass is compared to the one of an α-quartz polycrystal, the silica polymorph of the same density and local structure. The combined use of inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and ab initio numerical calculations provides compelling evidence of a transition, in the glass, from the isotropic elastic response at long wavelengths to a microscopic regime as the wavelength decreases below a characteristic length ξ of a few nanometers, corresponding to about 20 interatomic distances. In the microscopic regime the glass vibrations closely resemble those of the polycrystal, with excitations related to the acoustic and optic modes of the crystal. A coherent description of the experimental results is obtained assuming that the elastic modulus of the glass presents spatial heterogeneities of an average size a ~ ξ/2 π.

Abstract
We use x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to investigate the structural relaxation process in a metallic glass on the atomic length scale. We report evidence for a dynamical crossover between the supercooled liquid phase and the metastable glassy state, suggesting different origins of the relaxation process across the transition. Furthermore, using different cooling rates, we observe a complex hierarchy of dynamic processes characterized by distinct aging regimes. Strong analogies with the aging dynamics of soft glassy materials, such as gels and concentrated colloidal suspensions, point at stress relaxation as a universal mechanism driving the relaxation dynamics of out-of-equilibrium systems.

Abstract
The electronic structure of FeSe(1-x)Te(x) chalcogenide superconductors has been studied by x-ray emission (XES) and x-ray absorption (XAS) as a function of Te substitution. The Fe Kβ XES spectra reveal a relatively low spin state for Fe in FeSe(1-x)Te(x) superconductors, persisting in the whole range of Te substitution. The Fe K-edge high-resolution XAS shows systematic spectral changes due to the evolving hybridization between the Fe 3d (4p) and chalcogen p (d) orbitals. The resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra hardly show any feature except the one due to charge transfer from occupied to unoccupied bands, that changes substantially from FeSe to FeTe. The results provide important information on the electronic states and their evolution in the FeSe(1-x)Te(x) chalcogenides.

Abstract
Antiapoptotic B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) targets the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP(3)R) via its BH4 domain, thereby suppressing IP(3)R Ca(2+)-flux properties and protecting against Ca(2+)-dependent apoptosis. Here, we directly compared IP(3)R inhibition by BH4-Bcl-2 and BH4-Bcl-Xl. In contrast to BH4-Bcl-2, BH4-Bcl-Xl neither bound the modulatory domain of IP(3)R nor inhibited IP(3)-induced Ca(2+) release (IICR) in permeabilized and intact cells. We identified a critical residue in BH4-Bcl-2 (Lys17) not conserved in BH4-Bcl-Xl (Asp11). Changing Lys17 into Asp in BH4-Bcl-2 completely abolished its IP(3)R-binding and -inhibitory properties, whereas changing Asp11 into Lys in BH4-Bcl-Xl induced IP(3)R binding and inhibition. This difference in IP(3)R regulation between BH4-Bcl-2 and BH4-Bcl-Xl controls their antiapoptotic action. Although both BH4-Bcl-2 and BH4-Bcl-Xl had antiapoptotic activity, BH4-Bcl-2 was more potent than BH4-Bcl-Xl. The effect of BH4-Bcl-2, but not of BH4-Bcl-Xl, depended on its binding to IP(3)Rs. In agreement with the IP(3)R-binding properties, the antiapoptotic activity of BH4-Bcl-2 and BH4-Bcl-Xl was modulated by the Lys/Asp substitutions. Changing Lys17 into Asp in full-length Bcl-2 significantly decreased its binding to the IP(3)R, its ability to inhibit IICR and its protection against apoptotic stimuli. A single amino-acid difference between BH4-Bcl-2 and BH4-Bcl-Xl therefore underlies differential regulation of IP(3)Rs and Ca(2+)-driven apoptosis by these functional domains. Mutating this residue affects the function of Bcl-2 in Ca(2+) signaling and apoptosis.

Abstract
We report x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of both temperature and Mn doping. Analysis of Mn 2p core level spectra reveals the presence of a distinct electronic screening channel in the bulk, hitherto undetected in more surface sensitive analysis. Comparison with model calculations identifies the character of the Mn 3d electronic states and clarifies the role, and the difference between surface and bulk, of hybridization in mediating the ferromagnetic coupling in (Ga,Mn)As.

Abstract
We have measured plasmon energies in Na under high pressure up to 43 GPa using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The momentum-resolved results show clear deviations, growing with increasing pressure, from the predictions for a nearly free-electron metal. Plasmon energy calculations based on first-principles electronic band structures and a quasiclassical plasmon model allow us to identify a pressure-induced increase in the electron-ion interaction and associated changes in the electronic band structure as the origin of these deviations, rather than effects of exchange and correlation. Additional IXS results obtained for K and Rb are addressed briefly.
