Nickel(II)-Catalyzed Formal [3+2] Cycloadditions between Indoles and Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes

This article describes the development of a nickel-catalyzed regio- and diastereoselective formal [3+2] cycloaddition between N-substituted indoles and donor-acceptor cyclopropanes to synthesize cyclopenta[b]indoles. Optimized reaction conditions provide the desired nitrogen-containing cycloadducts in up to 93% yield and dr 8.6:1 with complete regioselectivity. The substrate scope showed high tolerance to various substituted indoles and cyclopropanes, resulting in the synthesis of six new cyclopenta[b]indoles and the isolation of five derivatives previously reported in the literature. In addition, a mechanistic proposal for the reaction was studied through online reaction monitoring by ESI-MS, allowing for the identification of the reactive intermediates in the Ni(II) catalyzed process. X-ray crystallography confirmed the structure and relative endo stereochemistry of the products. This method enables the fast and efficient construction of fused indolines from readily accessible starting materials.

Nickel, copper, and zinc dinuclear helicates: how do bulky groups influence their architecture?

The ligand design factors that may influence the isolation of metallosupramolecular helicates or mesocates still deserve to be investigated. In this sense, dinuclear nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) compounds were obtained by electrochemical synthesis using a family of five Schiff base ligands, H2Ln (n = 1-5), derived from bisphenylmethane and functionalized with bulky tert-butyl groups in the periphery and ethyl groups in the spacer. Six of the new complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, thus demonstrating that the helicate structure is predominant in the solid state. 1H NMR studies were performed for the zinc complexes to analyze if the helical architecture of the metal complexes is retained in solution. These studies reveal that the presence of a tert-butyl group in the ortho position with respect to the OH group is an essential factor identified for the existence of a helicate conformation in solution.

Aldiminium and 1,2,3-triazolium dithiocarboxylate zwitterions derived from cyclic (alkyl)(amino) and mesoionic carbenes

The synthesis of zwitterionic dithiocarboxylate adducts was achieved by deprotonating various aldiminium or 1,2,3-triazolium salts with a strong base, followed by the nucleophilic addition of the in situ-generated cyclic (alkyl)(amino) or mesoionic carbenes (CAACs or MICs) onto carbon disulfide. Nine novel compounds were isolated and fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, and HRMS techniques. Moreover, the molecular structures of two CAAC·CS2 and two MIC·CS2 betaines were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The analytical data recorded for all these adducts were compared with those reported previously for related NHC·CS2 betaines derived from imidazolinium or (benz)imidazolium salts. Due to the absence of electronic communication between the CS2 unit and the orthogonal heterocycle, all the CAAC·CS2, MIC·CS2, and NHC·CS2 zwitterions displayed similar electronic properties and featured the same bite angle. Yet, their steric properties are liable to ample modifications by varying the exact nature of their cationic heterocycle and its substituents.

The facile alkylation and iodination of imidazol(in)ium salts in the presence of cesium carbonate

The alkylation or iodination of imidazol(in)ium salts takes place readily in the presence of Cs2CO3. The procedure is very easy to implement and provides facile and straightforward access to a wealth of C2-substituted azolium salts. Furthermore, a C2α alkylation is also feasible, which extends the chemistry of NHCs and weak bases to their NHO analogues.

Application of Machine Learning to Characterize the Permeate Quality in Pilot-Scale Vacuum-Assisted Air Gap Membrane Distillation Operation

Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal desalination technique proposed for the valorization of residual brines that other operations such as reverse osmosis cannot treat. Previous studies have shown that vacuum-assisted air gap (V-AGMD) operation in commercial multi-envelope modules improves the performance of MD noticeably. However, the permeate quality at pilot scale has not been thoroughly characterized so far. The aim of this study is, therefore, to assess and model the effect of the main operating conditions (feed flow rate, inlet temperatures, and feed salinity) on the permeate quality. Results from different steady-state experiments allowed to estimate descriptive metrics such as the salt rejection factor (SRF) and the membrane leak ratio (MLR). Given their non-linear behavior, these metrics were subsequently modeled using artificial neural networks (ANN) to estimate the permeate quality in the whole scope of operating conditions. Acceptable SRF results with MLR values lower than 0.2% confirmed the validity of MD as an operation for the treatment of concentrated brines, although the salinity of the resulting permeate does not comply in all cases with that permitted for human consumption.

Ligand influence in electrocatalytic properties of Cu(II) triazole complexes for hydrogen peroxide detection in aqueous media

In this work, electrocatalytic changes of Cu(II) triazole complexes (Cu(L)₂) resulting from inductive effects were evaluated to fabricate a sensor for hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) determination. Three copper(II) complexes with electronically differentiated ligands were synthesized by slow diffusion method and characterized by X-ray crystallography, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), UV-Vis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and voltammetry cyclic (CV). Cu(LOMe)2/GC, Cu(LBr)2/GC and Cu(LNO2)2/GC sensors were then prepared. Under optimal conditions (pH = 11), the optimal sensor presented a response at -0.5 V, good linear range of 1-32 μM, reproducibility (1.7%), repeatability (1.2%), LOD of 0.0246 μM (S/N = 5), LOQ of 0.0747 μM (S/N = 5) and selectivity. Additionally, Cu(LNO2)2/GC sensor has been successfully applied in commercial substances, such as mouthwash, milk and tea.

Two Synthetic Approaches to Coinage Metal(I) Mesocates: Electrochemical versus Chemical Synthesis

We report two different approaches to isolate neutral and cationic mesocate-type metallosupramolecular architectures derived from coinage monovalent ions. For this purpose, we use a thiocarbohydrazone ligand, H₂L (1), conveniently tuned with bulky phosphine groups to stabilize the M^I ions and prevent ligand crossing to achieve the selective formation of mesocates. The neutral complexes [Cu₂(HL)₂] (2), [Ag₂(HL)₂] (3), and [Au₂(HL)₂] (4) were prepared by an electrochemical method, while the cationic complexes [Cu₂(H₂L)₂](PF₆)₂ (5), [Cu₂(H₂L)₂](BF₄)₂ (6), [Ag₂(H₂L)₂](PF₆)₂ (7), [Ag₄(HL)₂](NO₃)₂ (8), and [Au₂(H₂L)₂]Cl₂ (9) were obtained by using a metal salt as the precursor. All of the complexes are neutral or cationic dinuclear mesocates, except the silver nitrate derivative, which exhibits a tetranuclear cluster mesocate architecture. The crystal structures of the neutral and cationic copper(I), silver(I), and gold(I) complexes allow us to analyze the influence of synthetic methodology or the counterion role on both the micro- and macrostructures of the mesocates.

Conversion of a double-tetranuclear cluster silver helicate into a dihelicate via a rare desulfurization process

We show the first example of a bisthiosemicarbazone silver double-tetranuclear cluster helicate [Ag4L2]2 obtained by electrochemical synthesis which undergoes a rare desulfurization process giving rise to a cationic silver dihelicate [Ag2(H2L)2]SO4.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activity of Water-Soluble, Dual Anionic and Cationic Ruthenium-Arene Complexes Bearing Imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate Ligands

An efficient synthetic protocol was devised for the preparation of five cationic ruthenium-arene complexes bearing imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate ligands from the [RuCl₂(p-cymene)]₂ dimer and 2 equiv of an NHC·CS₂ zwitterion. The reactions proceeded cleanly and swiftly in dichloromethane at room temperature to afford the expected [RuCl(p-cymene)(S₂C·NHC)]Cl products in quantitative yields. When the [RuCl₂(p-cymene)]₂ dimer was reacted with only 1 equiv of a dithiolate betaine under the same experimental conditions, a set of five bimetallic compounds with the generic formula [RuCl(p-cymene)(S₂C·NHC)][RuCl₃(p-cymene)] was obtained in quantitative yields. These novel, dual anionic and cationic ruthenium-arene complexes were fully characterized by various analytical techniques. NMR titrations showed that the chelation of the dithiocarboxylate ligands to afford [RuCl(p-cymene)(S₂C·NHC)]⁺ cations was quantitative and irreversible. Conversely, the formation of the [RuCl₃(p-cymene)]^- anion was limited by an equilibrium, and this species readily dissociated into Cl^- anions and the [RuCl₂(p-cymene)]₂ dimer. The position of the equilibrium was strongly influenced by the nature of the solvent and was rather insensitive to the temperature. Two monometallic and two bimetallic complexes cocrystallized with water, and their molecular structures were solved by X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystallography revealed the existence of strong interactions between the azolium ring protons of the cationic complexes and neighboring donor groups from the anions or the solvent. The various compounds under investigation were highly soluble in water. They were all strongly cytotoxic against K562 cancer cells. Furthermore, with a selectivity index of 32.1, the [RuCl(p-cymene)(S₂C·SIDip)]Cl complex remarkably targeted the erythroleukemic cells vs mouse splenocytes.

Can seawater desalination be a win-win fix to our water cycle?

While we increasingly turn to desalination as a secure water supply, it is still perceived as an expensive and environmentally damaging solution, affordable only for affluent societies. In this contribution, we recast desalination from one of a last resort to a far-reaching, climate change mitigating, water security solution. First, we argue that the benefits of desalination go beyond the single-use value of the water produced. If coupled with water reuse for irrigation, desalination reduces groundwater abstraction and augments the water cycle. As such, it may support both adaptation to, and mitigation of climate change impacts by deploying plentiful water for human use, with all the benefits that entails, while helping preserve and restore ecosystems. Second, we counter two arguments commonly raised against desalination, namely its environmental impact and high cost. The environmental impact can be fully controlled so as not to pose long-term threats, if driven by renewable energy. Desalination may then have a zero carbon footprint. Moreover, appropriately designed outfalls make the disposal of brine at sea compatible with marine ecosystems.. Recovery of energy, minerals and more water from brine reject (particularly in the form of vapour for cooling to enable more crops and vegetation to grow), while possible, is often hardly economically justified. However, resource recovery may become more attractive in the future, and help reduce the brine volumes to dispose of. When fresh water becomes scarce, its cost tends to go up, making desalination increasingly economic. Moreover, desalination can have virtually no environmental costs. Considering the environmental costs of over-abstraction of freshwater, desalination tilts the balance in its favour.

Synthesis, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface and interaction energies analysis of 5-methyl-1,3-bis(3-nitrobenzyl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione

The title compound 5-methyl-1,3-bis(3-nitrobenzyl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione was obtained by reaction of thymine with 3-nitrobenzylbromide in the presence of cesium carbonate. Characterization of the product was achieved by NMR spectroscopy and its stability was probed in basic condition using UV-Visible analysis. Furthermore, the molecular structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in orthorhombic Pna21 space group with unit cell parameters a = 14.9594 (15) Å, b = 25.711 (3) Å, c = 4.5004 (4) Å, V = 1731.0 (3) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal packing of the title compound is stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bond, π···π and C−H···π stacking interactions. The intermolecular interactions were furthermore analyzed through the mapping of different Hirshfeld surfaces. The two-dimensional fingerprint revealed that the most important contributions to these surfaces come from O···H (37.1%), H···H (24%) and H···C/C···H (22.6%) interactions. The interaction energies stabilizing the crystal packing were calculated and were presented graphically as framework energy diagrams. Finally, the energy-framework analysis reveals that π···π and C−H···π interactions energies are mainly dispersive and are the most important forces in the crystal.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of N-(2-(N-methylsulfamoyl)phenyl)formamide: Degradation product of 2-methyl-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine 1,1-dioxide

The hydrolysis of 2-methyl-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine 1,1-dioxide (2) during crystallization under humidity (85 %) conditions, lead to N-(2-(N-methylsulfamoyl)phenyl)formamide as second step hydrolysis product, identified in the proposed degradation mechanism. Crystal of N-(2-(N-methylsulfamoyl)phenyl)formamide C8H10N2O3S (4), was obtained and characterized. The molecular structure determination was carried out with MoKα X-ray and data measured at 100 K. The compound 4 crystallizes in triclinic P͞1 space group with unit cell parameters a = 4.8465(4) Å, b = 8.1942(9) Å, c = 11.8686(13) Å, α = 77.080(4)°, β = 82.069(4)°, γ = 80.648(4)°, V = 450.76 (8) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure is stabilized by intramolecular N-H···O and intermolecular C-H···O and N-H···O hydrogen bonds that extended as infinite 1D chain along [100]. Stabilization is also ensured by oxygen-π stacking interaction between the aromatic ring and oxygen of the sulfonamide group. The analysis of intermolecular interactions through the mapping of dnorm and shape-index revel that the most significant contributions to the Hirshfeld surface 40.6 and 33.9% are from H···H and O···H contacts, respectively.

Mono- and bimetallic manganese-carbonyl complexes and clusters bearing imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate ligands

Five complexes with the generic formula fac-[MnBr(CO)₃(S₂C·NHC)] were obtained by reacting [MnBr(CO)₅] with a set of representative imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate zwitterions. These ligands are the adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and carbon disulfide. The mononuclear Mn(i) derivatives were coupled with Na[Mn(CO)₅] to afford bimetallic [Mn₂(CO)₆(S₂C·NHC)] clusters. Yet, the most convenient strategy to access these dinuclear Mn(0) products implied a direct carbonyl substitution from the [Mn₂(CO)₁₀] dimer. The molecular structures of three monometallic and four bimetallic compounds were elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the monometallic complexes, the NHC·CS₂ ligands exhibited a bidentate κ²-S,S' coordination mode with an S-C-S bite angle of about 116°. In the dinuclear clusters, the CS₂^- unit acted as a chelate toward one manganese center and as a pseudoallylic ligand toward the other one. The S-C-S bite angle was reduced to ca. 104°. Thus, the zwitterions displayed a remarkable flexibility, which also permitted a staggered arrangement of the carbonyl groups in the bimetallic systems. Examination of the [small nu, Greek, macron]_CO absorption bands on IR spectroscopy helped identify the presence of fac-Mn(CO)₃ or Mn₂(CO)₆ motifs, while the ¹³C NMR chemical shift of the CS₂^- moiety was a reliable indicator for monitoring its hapticity. Whereas the dinuclear clusters were air- and moisture-stable crystalline solids, mononuclear halido derivatives displayed only a limited stability under aerobic conditions. Both types of compounds underwent rather unselective, extensive fragmentations in the gas phase, in sharp contrast with the analogous rhenium derivatives that led to clean sequential decarbonylation processes upon collision-induced dissociation.

Small iron-carbonyl clusters bearing imidazolium-2-trithioperoxycarboxylate ligands

The reaction of [Fe₂(CO)₉] with two representative imidazolium-2-dithiocarboxylate zwitterions derived from common N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) bearing mesityl (IMes) or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl substituents on their nitrogen atoms (IDip) unexpectedly afforded two small bimetallic iron-carbonyl clusters with the generic formula [Fe₂(CO)₆(μ-κ²-S,S'-κ²-S,S'-S₃C·NHC)]. After a brief optimization of the reaction conditions, these two "sulfur-enriched" products were isolated in low yields. They were fully characterized by IR, NMR, UV/Visible, and ESI-MS techniques, and their molecular structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The two compounds adopted a butterfly-type disposition in the solid state, with an [Fe₂(CO)₆] core bridged by the trithioperoxycarboxylate moiety of the in situ generated NHC·CS₃ ligands. Bond lengths recorded for the CS₃^- unit revealed that its negative charge was mostly located on the remote sulfur atom.

Integration of Membrane Distillation with solar photo-Fenton for purification of water contaminated with Bacillus sp. and Clostridium sp. spores

Although Membrane Distillation (MD) has been extensively studied for desalination, it has other applications like removing all kinds of solutes from water and concentrating non-volatile substances. MD offers the possibility of producing a clean stream while concentrating valuable compounds from waste streams towards their recovery, or emerging contaminants and pathogens present in wastewater in order to facilitate their chemical elimination. This paper analyses the elimination of bacterial spores from contaminated water with MD and the role of MD in the subsequent treatment of the concentrate with photo-Fenton process. The experiments were performed at Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) using a plate and frame bench module with a Permeate Gap Membrane Distillation (PGMD) configuration. Tests were done for two different kinds of spores in two different water matrixes: distilled water with 3.5wt% of sea salts contaminated with spores of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) and wastewater after a secondary treatment and still contaminated with Clostridium sp. spores. An analysis of the permeate was performed in all cases to determine its purity, as well as the concentrated stream and its further treatment in order to assess the benefits of using MD. Results showed a permeate free of spores in all the cases, demonstrating the viability of MD to treat biological contaminated wastewater for further use in agriculture. Moreover, the results obtained after treating the concentrate with photo-Fenton showed a shorter treatment time for the reduction of the spore concentration in the water than that when only photo-Fenton was used.

Synthesis and complexation of superbulky imidazolium-2-dithiocarboxylate ligands

The superbulky N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylimidazol-2-ylidene (IDip*Me) and its 4-methoxy analogue (IDip*OMe) reacted instantaneously with carbon disulfide to afford the corresponding imidazolium-2-dithiocarboxylate zwitterions in high yields. These new dithiolate ligands were fully characterized and their coordination chemistry toward common Re(i) and Ru(ii) metal sources was thoroughly investigated. Neutral [ReBr(CO)₃(S₂C·NHC)] chelates featured three facially-arranged carbonyl groups on a distorted octahedron, whereas cationic [RuCl(p-cymene)(S₂C·NHC)]PF₆ complexes displayed a piano-stool geometry. The molecular structures of the six new compounds revealed that the NHC·CS₂ inner salts were highly flexible. Indeed, the torsion angle between their anionic and cationic moieties varied between ca. 63° in the free ligands and 3° in the ruthenium complexes. Concomitantly, the S-C-S bite angle underwent a contraction from 131° to 110-113° upon chelation. Computation of the %V_Bur parameter showed that the dithiocarboxylate unit of the NHC·CS₂ betaines chiefly determined the steric requirements of the imidazolium moieties, irrespective of the metal center involved in the complexation. The replacement of the p-methyl substituents of IDip*Me with p-methoxy groups in IDip*OMe did not significantly affect the ligand bulkiness. The more electron-donating methoxy group led, however, to small changes in various IR wavenumbers used to probe the electron donor properties of the carbene moiety.

Effect of the Metal Ion on the Enantioselectivity and Linkage Isomerization of Thiosemicarbazone Helicates

The effect of the metal ion and ligand design on the enantioselectivity and linkage isomerization of neutral cobalt and zinc bisthiosemicarbazone metallohelicates has been investigated in this work. The electrochemical synthesis has afforded the enantioselective formation of chirally pure cobalt helicates, and the ΛΛ isomer of a single enantiomer has been crystallized as only product for the cobalt methyl-substituted thiosemicarbazone helicate. Interestingly linkage isomers have been formed from zinc ethyl-substituted thiosemicarbazone helicate enantiomers for the first time. The co-existence of these isomers has been evaluated from the point of view of both experimental results and computational calculations.

Synthesis, characterization, and gas-phase fragmentation of rhenium-carbonyl complexes bearing imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate ligands

Five complexes with the generic formula [ReBr(CO)₃(κ²-S,S'-S₂C·NHC)] were obtained by reacting [ReBr(CO)₅] with a set of representative imidazol(in)ium-2-dithiocarboxylate zwitterions. These ligands are the adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and carbon disulfide. The monometallic Re(i) compounds were further coupled with Na[Re(CO)₅] to afford bimetallic Re(0) species. Depending on the experimental conditions, either octacarbonyl dimers [Re₂(CO)₈(μ₂-κ¹-S,κ¹-S'-S₂C·NHC)] or hexacarbonyl clusters [Re₂(CO)₆(κ²-S,S'-κ³-S,C,S'-S₂C·NHC)] were isolated. All the products were fully characterized using various analytical techniques. Single crystal XRD analysis helped establish with certainty the various binding modes exhibited by the NHC·CS₂ ligands. With bite angles ranging from ca. 104 to 130°, these zwitterions displayed a remarkable flexibility, which also permitted significant twists of the thiometallated rings to preserve a staggered arrangement of the carbonyl groups in the bimetallic systems. Monitoring the chemical shift of the CS₂^- moiety by ¹³C NMR spectroscopy was most useful to detect its change of hapticity upon decarbonylation of the octacarbonyl compounds into hexacarbonyl derivatives. IR spectroscopy was another very convenient tool to identify the type of complex formed in a reaction, based on the pattern of its carbonyl vibration bands. Advanced mass spectrometry techniques showed that all the compounds underwent partial or total decarbonylation in the gas phase with no concomitant fragmentation of the bimetallic assemblies into monometallic ions.

Enabling Efficient Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging of Synaptic Vesicle Glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) with a Robust and One-Step Radiosynthesis of a Highly Potent 18F-Labeled Ligand ([18F]UCB-H)

We herein describe the straightforward synthesis of a stable pyridyl(4-methoxyphenyl)iodonium salt and its [¹⁸F] radiolabeling within a one-step, fully automated and cGMP compliant radiosynthesis of [¹⁸F]UCB-H ([¹⁸F]7), a PET tracer for the imaging of synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A). Over the course of 1 year, 50 automated productions provided 34 ± 2% of injectable [¹⁸F]7 from up to 285 GBq (7.7 Ci) of [¹⁸F]fluoride in 50 min (uncorrected radiochemical yield, specific activity of 815 ± 185 GBq/μmol). The successful implementation of our synthetic strategy within routine, high-activity, and cGMP productions attests to its practicality and reliability for the production of large doses of [¹⁸F]7. In addition to enabling efficient and cost-effective clinical research on a range of neurological pathologies through the imaging of SV2A, this work further demonstrates the real value of iodonium salts for the cGMP ¹⁸F-PET tracer manufacturing industry, and their ability to fulfill practical and regulatory requirements in that field.

An unusual assembled Pb(ii) meso-helicate that shows the inert pair effect

We report on a meso-helicate exhibiting the inert pair effect for the first time, demonstrating that this effect must be considered for the controlled assembly of Pb(ii) supramolecular helicates/mesocates.

Ruthenium catalysts bearing a benzimidazolylidene ligand for the metathetical ring-closure of tetrasubstituted cycloolefins

Deprotonation of 1,3-di(2-tolyl)benzimidazolium tetrafluoroborate with a strong base afforded 1,3-di(2-tolyl)benzimidazol-2-ylidene (BTol), which dimerized progressively into the corresponding dibenzotetraazafulvalene. The complexes [RhCl(COD)(BTol)] (COD is 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and cis-[RhCl(CO)2(BTol)] were synthesized to probe the steric and electronic parameters of BTol. Comparison of the percentage of buried volume (%VBur) and of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) of BTol with those determined previously for 1,3-dimesitylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene (BMes) revealed that the two N-heterocyclic carbenes displayed similar electron donicities, yet the 2-tolyl substituents took a slightly greater share of the rhodium coordination sphere than the mesityl groups, due to a more pronounced tilt. The anti,anti conformation adopted by BTol in the molecular structure of [RhCl(COD)(BTol)] ensured nonetheless a remarkably unhindered access to the metal center, as evidenced by steric maps. Second-generation ruthenium-benzylidene and isopropoxybenzylidene complexes featuring the BTol ligand were obtained via phosphine exchange from the first generation Grubbs and Hoveyda-Grubbs catalysts, respectively. The atropisomerism of the 2-tolyl substituents within [RuCl2(=CHPh)(PCy3)(BTol)] was investigated by using variable temperature NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular structures of all four possible rotamers of [RuCl2(=CH-o-O(i)PrC6H4)(BTol)] were determined by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes were highly active at promoting the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of model α,ω-dienes. The replacement of BMes with BTol was particularly beneficial to achieve the ring-closure of tetrasubstituted cycloalkenes. More specifically, the stable isopropoxybenzylidene chelate enabled an almost quantitative RCM of two challenging substrates, viz., diethyl 2,2-bis(2-methylallyl)malonate and N,N-bis(2-methylallyl)tosylamide, within a few hours at 60 °C.

Enantioselective synthesis of α-benzylated lanthionines and related tripeptides for biological incorporation into E. coli peptidoglycan

The synthesis of modified tripeptides (S)-Ala-γ-(R)-Glu-X, where X = (R,S) or (R,R) diastereomers of α-benzyl or α-(4-azidobenzyl)lanthionine, was carried out. The chemical strategy involved the enantioselective alkylation of a 4-MeO-phenyloxazoline. The reductive opening of the alkylated oxazolines, followed by cyclization and oxidation, led to four PMB-protected sulfamidates. Subsequent PMB removal, Boc protection and regioselective opening with cysteine methyl ester led to protected lanthionines. These compounds were further converted in a one pot process to the corresponding protected tripeptides. After ester and Boc deprotection, the four tripeptides were evaluated as potential analogues of the natural tripeptide (S)-Ala-γ-(R)-Glu-meso-A2pm. These compounds were evaluated for introduction, by means of the biosynthetic recycling pathway, into the peptidoglycan of Escherichia coli. A successful in vitro biosynthesis of UDP-MurNAc-tripeptides from the tripeptides containing α-benzyl lanthionine was achieved using purified murein peptide ligase (Mpl). Bioincorporation into E. coli W7 did not occur under different tested conditions probably due to the bulky benzyl group at the Cα carbon of the C-terminal amino acid.

Cl–OH ion-exchanging process in chlorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3Cl x (OH)1 − x ) – a deep insight

We have synthesized large chlorapatite [ClAp, Ca5(PO4)3Cl x (OH)1 − x , where x = 1] single crystals using the molten salt method. We have corroborated that the hexagonal symmetry P63/m describes the crystal structure best, even though the crystals are synthetic and stoichiometric. Moreover, we have performed several thermal treatments on these ClAp crystals, generating new single crystals in the apatite system [Ca5(PO4)3Cl x (OH)1 − x , where x ≤ 1], where the chloride anions (Cl−) were systematically substituted by hydroxyl anions (OH−). These new single crystals were methodically characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform–IR spectroscopy (FT–IR), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). We have discovered a previously unreported OH− inclusion site substituting the Cl− anion during the ion-exchanging process. Finally, we evaluated the atomic rearrangements of the other species involved in the structure. These movements are associated with ionic exchange, which can be justified from an energetic point of view. We also found a novel phase transformation at high temperature. When the crystals are heated over 1753 K the apatite system evolves to a less ordered monoclinic structure, in which the complete loss of the species in the anionic channel (Cl−, OH−) has been confirmed.
