High resolution NMR measurements using a 400MHz NMR with an (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x high-temperature superconducting inner coil: Towards a compact super-high-field NMR

Use of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) inner coils in combination with conventional low-temperature superconducting (LTS) outer coils for an NMR magnet, i.e. a LTS/HTS NMR magnet, is a suitable option to realize a high-resolution NMR spectrometer with operating frequency >1GHz. From the standpoint of creating a compact magnet, (RE: Rare earth) Ba2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) HTS inner coils which can tolerate a strong hoop stress caused by a Lorentz force are preferred. However, in our previous work on a first-generation 400MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet, the NMR resolution and sensitivity were about ten times worse than that of a conventional LTS NMR magnet. The result was caused by a large field inhomogeneity in the REBCO coil itself and the shielding effect of a screening current induced in that coil. In the present paper, we describe the operation of a modified 400MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet with an advanced field compensation technology using a combination of novel ferromagnetic shimming and an appropriate procedure for NMR spectrum line shape optimization. We succeeded in obtaining a good NMR line shape and 2D NOESY spectrum for a lysozyme aqueous sample. We believe that this technology is indispensable for the realization of a compact super-high-field high-resolution NMR.

Operation of a 400MHz NMR magnet using a (RE:Rare Earth)Ba2Cu3O7-x high-temperature superconducting coil: Towards an ultra-compact super-high field NMR spectrometer operated beyond 1GHz

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are the key technology to achieve super-high magnetic field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers with an operating frequency far beyond 1GHz (23.5T). (RE)Ba₂Cu₃O_7-x (REBCO, RE: rare earth) conductors have an advantage over Bi₂Sr₂Ca₂Cu₃O_10-x (Bi-2223) and Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8-x (Bi-2212) conductors in that they have very high tensile strengths and tolerate strong electromagnetic hoop stress, thereby having the potential to act as an ultra-compact super-high field NMR magnet. As a first step, we developed the world's first NMR magnet comprising an inner REBCO coil and outer low-temperature superconducting (LTS) coils. The magnet was successfully charged without degradation and mainly operated at 400MHz (9.39T). Technical problems for the NMR magnet due to screening current in the REBCO coil were clarified and solved as follows: (i) A remarkable temporal drift of the central magnetic field was suppressed by a current sweep reversal method utilizing ∼10% of the peak current. (ii) A Z2 field error harmonic of the main coil cannot be compensated by an outer correction coil and therefore an additional ferromagnetic shim was used. (iii) Large tesseral harmonics emerged that could not be corrected by cryoshim coils. Due to those harmonics, the resolution and sensitivity of NMR spectra are ten-fold lower than those for a conventional LTS NMR magnet. As a result, a HSQC spectrum could be achieved for a protein sample, while a NOESY spectrum could not be obtained. An ultra-compact 1.2GHz NMR magnet could be realized if we effectively take advantage of REBCO conductors, although this will require further research to suppress the effect of the screening current.

Generation of squeezed vacuum pulses at 810 nm using a 40-cm-long optical fiber

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a squeezed vacuum pulse at 810 nm with a fiber polarization interferometer. During femtosecond laser pulse propagation through an optical fiber in the normal dispersion regime, only self-phase modulation within a short length contributes to pulse squeezing since the laser pulse is immediately broadened. Guided acoustic-wave Brillouin scattering (GAWBS) noise that increases in proportional to the fiber length is also lower with shorter fibers. Consequently, a maximum noise reduction of 2.1 dB (4.8 dB when corrected for losses) is obtained using a 40-cm-long single mode optical fiber.

Operation of a 500 MHz high temperature superconducting NMR: towards an NMR spectrometer operating beyond 1 GHz

We have begun a project to develop an NMR spectrometer that operates at frequencies beyond 1 GHz (magnetic field strength in excess of 23.5 T) using a high temperature superconductor (HTS) innermost coil. As the first step, we developed a 500 MHz NMR with a Bi-2223 HTS innermost coil, which was operated in external current mode. The temporal magnetic field change of the NMR magnet after the coil charge was dominated by (i) the field fluctuation due to a DC power supply and (ii) relaxation in the screening current in the HTS tape conductor; effect (i) was stabilized by the 2H field-frequency lock system, while effect (ii) decreased with time due to relaxation of the screening current induced in the HTS coil and reached 10(-8)(0.01 ppm)/h on the 20th day after the coil charge, which was as small as the persistent current mode of the NMR magnet. The 1D (1)H NMR spectra obtained by the 500 MHz LTS/HTS magnet were nearly equivalent to those obtained by the LTS NMR magnet. The 2D-NOESY, 3D-HNCO and 3D-HNCACB spectra were achieved for ubiquitin by the 500 MHz LTS/HTS magnet; their quality was closely equivalent to that achieved by a conventional LTS NMR. Based on the results of numerical simulation, the effects of screening current-induced magnetic field changes are predicted to be harmless for the 1.03 GHz NMR magnet system.

Generation of squeezed pulses with a Sagnac loop fiber interferometer using a non-soliton femtosecond laser pulse at 800 nm

We experimentally demonstrate generation of a squeezed vacuum at 800 nm with a Sagnac loop fiber interferometer. When negative dispersion is properly added to an input laser pulse to compensate for the fiber dispersion, the level of squeezing is improved. A squeezed vacuum of 0.45 dB is obtained at a dispersion of -0.0157 ps(2) for the 1.5 m-long fiber loop. Since the squeezed vacuum is degraded by guided acoustic-wave Brillouin scattering (GAWBS), the noise level of the squeezing is improved by -0.3 dB at a liquid nitrogen temperature. We also demonstrate generation of photon number squeezing at -1.3 dB.

[A case of retroperitoneal fibrosarcoma]

A case of retroperitoneal fibrosarcoma is reported. An 81-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with gross hematuria. X-ray examination of intravenous pyelography, computed tomography and angiography revealed left hydronephrosis and left renal tumor. Excisional surgery was carried out. The tumor and left kidney were completely removed. Pathological diagnosis was retroperitoneal fibrosarcoma. Five months later, he died of lung and liver metastasis.

[Urachal transitional cell carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon]

We report a patient with urachal transitional cell carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this disease are discussed. The literature is also reviewed. This 42-year-old man was admitted with the chief complaint of micturition pain. Operation consisting of total cystourethrectomy, excision of the urachus together with the umbilicus, pelvic lymphadenectomy, ilial conduit plasty, sigmoidectomy, and colorectostomy was performed on June 3, 1986, after the diagnosis of urachal carcinoma invading the sigmoid colon. A tumor the size of a hen's egg was found at the dome of the bladder extending to the sigmoid colon. The urachus 8 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter extended from the site of the tumor to the umbilicus. Histologically the tumor was a transitional cell carcinoma Grade III. The urachus was composed of epithelioid and muscle layers, and its lower end was filled with necrotic inflammatory debris so that the canal was obliterated; tumor cells infiltrated the muscle layer. No metastasis was found in lymphnodes. Combination therapy of 5 fluorouracil, adriamycin and cis-platinum was given after operation. He has returned to work and is doing well without evidence of metastasis or recurrence now at 1 year after the operation.

Double eccentric connectors for optical fibers

An optical fiber connector with an adjusting mechanism using double eccentric tubes is reported. Tolerable impairment values of possible factors affecting connection loss are evaluated. The main factors of the connection loss are mutual core displacement and fiber axis tilt. By using a double eccentric adjusting mechanism, a 0.57-dB average connecting loss between step index multimode fibers is obtained without matching material. The connection loss can be attributed quantitatively to several impairment factors. Using a transparent thin film in the connecting section, the reflection can be reduced as low as about -25 dB, and the average connecting loss was improved to about 0.20 dB.
