Intention to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine among Brazilian immigrant women in the U.S

Background

COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted low-income immigrant communities. There is concern that the current uptake of COVID-19 vaccines is suboptimal and that this may be contributing to COVID-19 inequities. However, little is known about the acceptability of COVID-19 vaccines among immigrants in the U.S. Our goal was to gauge COVID-19 vaccine intentions among Brazilian immigrant women living in the U.S.

Methods

We conducted an online survey between July and August 2020 offered in Portuguese and English languages among a convenience sample of Brazilian immigrant women ages 18 years and older. Women were recruited through online advertisements by community-based organizations and social media groups to complete a survey that assessed intention to get a COVID-19 vaccine, attitudes toward vaccines, and perceptions about the pandemic.

Results

Of the total sample (N = 353), most (70.8%) indicated they intended to get a COVID-19 vaccine. In bivariate analyses, vaccine intentions were significantly associated with perceptions about the severity of the pandemic, trusted sources of health information, and the number of years lived in the U.S. Multinomial logistic regression models revealed that those who did not intend to be vaccinated had lived a longer time in the U.S. (OR: -0.12 95% CI: -0.19, -0.05), perceived the pandemic to be a minor issue (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 0.62, 2.42), and trusted information from social networks (OR: -1.94, 95% CI: -3.25, -0.63) or private news sources (OR: -1.71, 95% CI: -2.78, -0.63).

Conclusions

While most women reported they would get a COVID-19 vaccine, efforts to reach those who may be hesitant should target those who have lived in the U.S. for longer periods of time and do not perceive the pandemic to be a major crisis. Healthcare providers may be particularly suited to deliver this information given high levels of trust.

Occupational health and safety experiences among self-identified immigrant workers living or working in Somerville, MA by ethnicity, years in the US, and English proficiency

In this community based research initiative, we employed a survey instrument predominately developed and administered by Teen Educators to assess occupational health risks for Haitian, Salvadoran, and Brazilian immigrants (n = 405) in Somerville, MA, USA. We demonstrate that a combined analysis of ethnicity, years in the US, and English proficiency better characterized the occupational experience of immigrant workers than considering these variables individually. While years in the US (negatively) and English proficiency (positively) explained the occurrence of health risks, the country of origin identified the most vulnerable populations in the community. Brazilians, Salvadorans, and other Hispanic, all of whom who have been in the US varying length of time, with varying proficiency in English language had twice the odds of reporting injuries due to work compared to other immigrants. Although this observation was not significant it indicates that years in the US and English proficiency alone do not predict health risks among this population. We recommend the initiation of larger studies employing c community based participatory research methods to confirm these differences and to further explore work and health issues of immigrant populations. This study is one of the small number of research efforts to utilize a contemporaneous assessment of occupational health problems in three distinct immigrant populations at the community level within a specific Environmental Justice context and social milieu.

The Vida Verde Women's Co-Op: Brazilian immigrants organizing to promote environmental and social justice

We reviewed the key steps in the launch of the Vida Verde Women's Co-Op among Brazilian immigrant housecleaners in Somerville, MA. The co-op provides green housecleaning products, encourages healthy work practices, and promotes a sense of community among its members. We conducted in-depth interviews with 8 of the first co-op members, who reported a reduction in symptoms associated with the use of traditional cleaning agents and a new sense of mutual support. Critical to the co-op's success have been the supportive roles of its academic partners (Tufts University and the University of Massachusetts, Lowell), effective media outreach, and a focus on advancing social justice. Next steps include implementing a formal business plan and assessing the appropriateness of cooperatives in other industries.

A comparison of organic and inorganic carbon controls over biological denitrification in aquaria

In aquaria and rearing tanks, nitrate accumulation as a result of organic matter degradation is inevitable and has two major negative side effects: direct toxicity to organisms, specially invertebrates, and the introduction of a reducing environment by oxygen consumption. The aim of this study was to compare two alternate methods of removing nitrogen compounds from closed systems, autotrophic columnar denitrification (ACD) and heterotrophic columnar denitrification (HCD) by following end product concentrations as reaction progressed. A pilot plant consisting of two series of 50 dm3 recirculating flow systems (each in triplicate) was used to test both methods. Absence of pH control was also useful in autotrophic denitrification systems in order to follow effects over reaction rates and pathways. Concentrations of NO(3-), NO2- and NH(4+) were followed throughout the experiment, as well as pH, temperature and salinity. Under different flow conditions results show that higher nitrate reduction rates were possible in the autotrophic systems (35.1+/-4.7 microM/day without pH control until reversal of the process and 20.6+/-7.3 microM/day after reestablishment of pH control) in comparison with heterotrophic (9.9+/-1.3 microM/day). However, pH control through calcium bicarbonate addition was found to be crucial in maintaining constant levels of total denitrification in ACD systems, just as it was necessary to closely maintain organic carbon addition to HCD systems.
