Participation in breast cancer risk counseling among women with a family history

Recent scientific breakthroughs in the genetics of breast cancer may have had effects on women's perceptions of risk and subsequent worry about breast cancer. Here, we present the rates of interest in counseling among women identified from diverse sources, their levels of cancer worry and perceived risk, and predictors of their agreement to participate in breast cancer risk counseling. Women were identified through breast cancer cases and through media offers. They completed a telephone survey and were ultimately either entered or not entered into a counseling trial. Overall, almost half (46%) of cases who were approached responded to the contact letter asking for information about potentially interested relatives. A total of 588 women responded to the brief media solicitations over a 15-week period. Participants recruited from media contacts reported slightly but significantly higher levels of worry about getting cancer, compared to case-recruited participants. Cancer worry negatively and significantly predicted entry into the counseling project. The results presented here may have implications for recruiting women in the general population with a family history of breast cancer for counseling about their risk for the disease.

Phased array RF coils for high-resolution MRI of the inner ear and brain stem

OBJECTIVE

The spatial resolution in MRI is predominantly limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). To increase the S/N, a four coil phased array consisting of bilateral pairs of semioval coils was constructed for high resolution imaging of the temporal bone and brainstem.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Coil sizes of 10 x 6 and 6 x 4.5 cm were tested. The S/N values were measured in vivo and with homogeneous phantoms and compared to commercial 3 in receive and quadrature head coils.

RESULTS

At a depth of 4-5 cm, phantom studies yielded S/N improvements of a factor of 1.26-1.37 with the large array compared to the 3 in coil and 2.33-1.74 compared to the head coil. Similar improvements (1.16 and 2.37) were obtained in inner ear images. No further improvement was achieved at this depth with the small array. At a depth of 8 cm, phantom studies yielded similar S/N for the quadrature head coil and two bilaterally placed large array coils, while a factor of 1.27 was obtained in brainstem images.

CONCLUSION

The use of phased array coils yields significantly increased S/N and is thus valuable for high resolution MRI.

Construction of a 28-mm 1H/13C probe and actively shielded Z-gradient set for operation in a 9.4 T/89 mm magnet

In this work, we present a new RF and gradient assembly for operation in a 9.4 Tesla/89 mm magnet. This assembly was designed in order to enable 1H-NMR perfusion studies that are based on proton-observed carbon-edited approaches or gradient selected double quantum coherence. The RF portion of this probe assembly is comprised of a modified Alderman-Grant coil and a saddle coil operating at 400 and 100 MHz, respectively. These coils are surrounded by an actively shielded Z gradient, which also allows for the use of gradient-based water suppression without the need for carbon selection. We demonstrate that this probe can be used to implement gradient selected double quantum coherence experiments resulting in a high degree of water suppression.
