Abstract
Measurements of methane isotopologues can differentiate between different source types, be they biogenic (e.g. marsh lands) or abiogenic (e.g. industry). Global measurements of these isotopologues would greatly benefit the current disconnect between 'top-down' (knowledge from chemistry transport models and satellite measurements) and 'bottom-up' (in situ measurement inventories) methane measurements. However, current measurements of these isotopologues are limited to a small number of in situ studies and airborne studies. In this paper we investigate the potential for detecting the second most common isotopologue of methane (13CH4) from space using the Japanese Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite applying a quick and simple residual radiance analysis technique. The method allows for a rapid analysis of spectral regions, and can be used to teach university students or advanced school students about radiative transfer analysis. Using this method we find limited sensitivity to 13CH4, with detections limited to total column methane enhancements of >6%, assuming a desert surface albedo of >0.3.

Can We Use Satellite-Based FAPAR to Detect Drought? SENSORS 2019; 19:s19173662. Abstract
Drought in Australia has widespread impacts on agriculture and ecosystems. Satellite-based Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) has great potential to monitor and assess drought impacts on vegetation greenness and health. Various FAPAR products based on satellite observations have been generated and made available to the public. However, differences remain among these datasets due to different retrieval methodologies and assumptions. The Quality Assurance for Essential Climate Variables (QA4ECV) project recently developed a quality assurance framework to provide understandable and traceable quality information for Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). The QA4ECV FAPAR is one of these ECVs. The aim of this study is to investigate the capability of QA4ECV FAPAR for drought monitoring in Australia. Through spatial and temporal comparison and correlation analysis with widely used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT)/PROBA-V FAPAR generated by Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) drought index, as well as the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) soil moisture, the study shows that the QA4ECV FAPAR can support agricultural drought monitoring and assessment in Australia. The traceable and reliable uncertainties associated with the QA4ECV FAPAR provide valuable information for applications that use the QA4ECV FAPAR dataset in the future.

MERIS observations of phytoplankton phenology in the Baltic Sea. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2018; 642:447-462. Abstract
The historical data from the MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) is an invaluable archive for studying global waters from inland lakes to open oceans. Although the MERIS sensor ceased to operate in April 2012, the data capacities are now re-established through the recently launched Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI). The development of a consistent time series for investigating phytoplankton phenology features is crucial if the potential of MERIS and OLCI data is to be fully exploited for inland water monitoring. This study presents a time series of phytoplankton abundance and bloom spatial extent for the highly eutrophic inland water of the Baltic Sea using the 10-year MERIS archive (2002-2011) and a chlorophyll-a based Summed Positive Peaks (SPP) algorithm. A gradient approach in conjunction with the histogram analysis was used to determine a global threshold from the entire collection of SPP images for identifying phytoplankton blooms. This allows spatio-temporal dynamics of daily bloom coverage, timing, phytoplankton abundance and spatial extent to be investigated for each Baltic basin. Furthermore, a number of meteorological and hydrological variables, including spring excess phosphate, summer sea surface temperature and photosynthetically active radiation, were explored using boosted regression trees and generalised additive models to understand the ecological response of phytoplankton assemblages to environmental perturbations and potential predictor variables of summer blooms. The results indicate that the surface layer excess phosphate available in February and March had paramount importance over all other variables considered in governing summer bloom abundance in the major Baltic basins. This finding allows new insights into the development of early warning systems for summer phytoplankton blooms in the Baltic Sea and elsewhere.

Abstract
A novel approach, termed Summed Positive Peaks (SPP), is proposed for determining phytoplankton abundances (Chlorophyll-a or Chl-a) and surface phytoplankton bloom extent in the optically complex Baltic Sea. The SPP approach is established on the basis of a baseline subtraction method using Rayleigh corrected top-of-atmosphere data from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) measurements. It calculates the reflectance differences between phytoplankton related signals observed in the MERIS red and near infrared (NIR) bands, such as sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SICF) and the backscattering at 709nm, and considers the summation of the positive line heights for estimating Chl-a concentrations. The SPP algorithm is calibrated against near coincident in situ data collected from three types of phytoplankton dominant waters encountered in the Baltic Sea during 2010 (N=379). The validation results show that the algorithm is capable of retrieving Chl-a concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 3mgm-3, with an RMSE of 0.24mgm-3 (R2=0.69, N=264). Additionally, the comparison results with several Chl-a algorithms demonstrates the robustness of the SPP approach and its sensitivity to low to medium biomass waters. Based on the red and NIR reflectance features, a flagging method is also proposed to distinguish intensive surface phytoplankton blooms from the background water.

Abstract
In this paper, we address the problem of fast and accurate extraction of points that correspond to the same location (named tie-points) from pairs of large-sized images. First, we conduct a theoretical analysis of the performance of the full-image matching approach, demonstrating its limitations when applied to large images. Subsequently, we introduce a novel technique to impose spatial constraints on the matching process without employing subsampled versions of the reference and the target image, which we name coupled image decomposition. This technique splits images into corresponding subimages through a process that is theoretically invariant to geometric transformations, additive noise, and global radiometric differences, as well as being robust to local changes. After presenting it, we demonstrate how coupled image decomposition can be used both for image registration and for automatic estimation of epipolar geometry. Finally, coupled image decomposition is tested on a data set consisting of several planetary images of different size, varying from less than one megapixel to several hundreds of megapixels. The reported experimental results, which includes comparison with full-image matching and state-of-the-art techniques, demonstrate the substantial computational cost reduction that can be achieved when matching large images through coupled decomposition, without at the same time compromising the overall matching accuracy.

Abstract
Healthcare-associated infections (HCAI/HAI) represent a substantial threat to patient health during hospitalization and incur billions of dollars additional cost for subsequent treatment. One promising method for the detection of bacterial contamination in a clinical setting before an HAI outbreak occurs is to exploit native fluorescence of cellular molecules for a hand-held, rapid-sweep surveillance instrument. Previous studies have shown fluorescence-based detection to be sensitive and effective for food-borne and environmental microorganisms, and even to be able to distinguish between cell types, but this powerful technique has not yet been deployed on the macroscale for the primary surveillance of contamination in healthcare facilities to prevent HAI. Here we report experimental data for the specification and design of such a fluorescence-based detection instrument. We have characterized the complete fluorescence response of eleven clinically-relevant bacteria by generating excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) over broad wavelength ranges. Furthermore, a number of surfaces and items of equipment commonly present on a ward, and potentially responsible for pathogen transfer, have been analyzed for potential issues of background fluorescence masking the signal from contaminant bacteria. These include bedside handrails, nurse call button, blood pressure cuff and ward computer keyboard, as well as disinfectant cleaning products and microfiber cloth. All examined bacterial strains exhibited a distinctive double-peak fluorescence feature associated with tryptophan with no other cellular fluorophore detected. Thus, this fluorescence survey found that an emission peak of 340nm, from an excitation source at 280nm, was the cellular fluorescence signal to target for detection of bacterial contamination. The majority of materials analysed offer a spectral window through which bacterial contamination could indeed be detected. A few instances were found of potential problems of background fluorescence masking that of bacteria, but in the case of the microfiber cleaning cloth, imaging techniques could morphologically distinguish between stray strands and bacterial contamination.

Abstract
Primitive photosynthetic microorganisms, either dormant or dead, may remain today on the martian surface, akin to terrestrial cyanobacteria surviving endolithically in martian analog sites on Earth such as the Antarctic Dry Valleys and the Atacama Desert. Potential markers of martian photoautotrophs include the red edge of chlorophyll reflectance spectra or fluorescence emission from systems of light-harvesting pigments. Such biosignatures, however, would be modified and degraded by long-term exposure to ionizing radiation from the unshielded cosmic ray flux onto the martian surface. In this initial study into this issue, three analytical techniques--absorbance, reflectance, and fluorescence spectroscopy--were employed to determine the progression of the radiolytic destruction of cyanobacteria. The pattern of signal loss for chlorophyll reflection and fluorescence from several biomolecules is characterized and quantified after increasing exposures to ionizing gamma radiation. This allows estimation of the degradation rates of cyanobacterial biosignatures on the martian surface and the identification of promising detectable fluorescent break-down products.

Abstract
The European Space Agency will launch the ExoMars mission in 2016 with a primary goal of surveying the martian subsurface for evidence of organic material. We have recently investigated the utility of including either a 365 nm light-emitting diode or a 375 nm laser light source in the ExoMars rover panoramic camera (PanCam). Such a modification would make it feasible to monitor rover drill cuttings optically for the fluorescence signatures of aromatic organic molecules and map the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as a function of depth to the 2 m limit of the ExoMars drill. The technique described requires no sample preparation, does not consume irreplaceable resources, and would allow mission control to prioritize deployment of organic detection experiments that require sample destruction, expenditure of non-replaceable consumables, or both. We report here for the first time laser-induced fluorescence emission (L.I.F.E.) imaging detection limits for anthracene, pyrene, and perylene targets doped onto a Mars analog granular peridotite with a 375 nm Nichia laser diode in optically uncorrected wide-angle mode. Data were collected via the Beagle 2 PanCam backup filter wheel fitted with original blue (440 nm), green (530 nm), and red (670 nm) filters. All three PAH species can be detected with the PanCam green (530 nm) filter. Detection limits in the green band for signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) > 10 are 49 parts per million (ppm) for anthracene, 145 ppm for pyrene, and 20 ppm for perylene. The anthracene detection limit improves to 7 ppm with use of the PanCam blue filter. We discuss soil-dependent detection limit constraints; use of UV excitation with other rover cameras, which provides higher spatial resolution; and the advantages of focused and wide-angle laser modes. Finally, we discuss application of L.I.F.E. techniques at multiple wavelengths for exploration of Mars analog extreme environments on Earth, including Icelandic hydrothermally altered basalts and the ice-covered lakes and glaciers of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica.

Abstract
It is thought that the Cerberus Fossae fissures on Mars were the source of both lava and water floods two to ten million years ago. Evidence for the resulting lava plains has been identified in eastern Elysium, but seas and lakes from these fissures and previous water flooding events were presumed to have evaporated and sublimed away. Here we present High Resolution Stereo Camera images from the European Space Agency Mars Express spacecraft that indicate that such lakes may still exist. We infer that the evidence is consistent with a frozen body of water, with surface pack-ice, around 5 degrees north latitude and 150 degrees east longitude in southern Elysium. The frozen lake measures about 800 x 900 km in lateral extent and may be up to 45 metres deep--similar in size and depth to the North Sea. From crater counts, we determined its age to be 5 +/- 2 million years old. If our interpretation is confirmed, this is a place that might preserve evidence of primitive life, if it has ever developed on Mars.

Abstract
Abstract The comparison of mechanistically different advanced oxidation processes (AOPS) UV/H2O2, UV/03 and O3/H2O2 needs a non-specific figure-of-merit to avoid influences by system-inherent parameters. The chosen figure-of-merit consists of the electrical energy per order of magnitude in oxidation per m3, EE/O. Results from own experiments were compared with data derived f rom the literature. Considered were batch-experiments, pilot-plants and full-scale plants. The combination O3/H2O2 proved to be the most efficient process by means of energy consumption irrespective of the size of the plant.

Abstract
Expression of the Xenopus laevis metallothionein (MT) gene was studied by in situ hybridization throughout development. MT mRNA was detected from the tailbud stage onwards. MT expression was observed in bucco-pharyngeal epithelium, pronephros and liver anlagen, aswell as in lens and periventricular areas of the encephalon. MT transcripts, in both larvae and adults, were detected in diverse regions of the central nervous system and in differentiating tissues implicated in detoxification processes: liver hepatocytes, small intestine epithelia and kidney tubules. These data are discussed in the context of MT functions and support a physiological role for MT in growth processes.

Abstract
The Dlx homeobox genes of vertebrates are transcribed in multiple cells of the embryo with overlapping patterns but often with different onsets of expression. Here we describe the interaction between two dlx genes, dlx3 and dlx4, during zebrafish development. The observation that dlx3 expression precedes that of dlx4 in the otic vesicle led us to investigate whether dlx3 had the ability to control expression of dlx4. Truncated versions of dlx3 were overexpressed in zebrafish embryos and the expression patterns of dlx4 were examined later in development. Overexpression of truncated forms of Dlx3 or of a Dlx3-Dlx2 chimera was found to result in perturbations in dlx4 expression. In addition, cotransfection experiments indicated the ability of Dlx3 to activate transcription through a 1.7-kb fragment of the 5' flanking region of dlx4. These results suggest that dlx4 is one of the target genes of dlx3 in embryos and that cross-regulatory interactions between Dlx genes may be one of the mechanisms responsible for their overlapping expression.

Abstract
The absence of nosocomial infections control in the hospital Henri-Laborit, specialized in mental medicine, has brought ourselves to answer the question: is the nosocomial infection in psychiatric hospital a myth or a reality? A retrospective study of global nosocomial infections incidence has been realized from ten years of microbiology laboratory data. During this time, 716 patients have contracted one or several nosocomial infections. The incidence rate is 3%, the incidence density rate 0.3/1000. The urinary infections represent half of the infections, followed by the septic wounds. Some infections like septicaemia implicate the patient vital prognosis.

BACKGROUND Craniopharyngioma, the most common tumor of the sellar and suprasellar regions in childhood, can exceptionally develop in the infrasellar area. CASE REPORT A premature girl (GA: 30 weeks) weighing 1240 g required intubation and ventilation because she suffered from a neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Nasal endoscopy showed total obstruction of rhinopharynx by a tumor resembling adenoid tissue. This tumor was successfully excised and its histological examination showed a craniopharyngioma. CONCLUSION A wide range of intranasal tumors has to be examined, endoscopy and CT scan are necessary for a precise localization and to eliminate meningocele.

Abstract
Metallothioneins (MT) are expressed during early development in species of several groups. To understand MT function in developmental processes, we studied the MT system of Xenopus laevis, a model vertebrate species in experimental embryology. We first purified and sequenced the liver MT from copper-treated animals. This 62-amino-acid protein shares the main structural properties of known vertebrate MT, and is more closely related to avian than to fish or mammalian MT. Using this sequence, we designed oligonucleotide primers to amplify and isolate a MT clone from a XL2 cell line cDNA library. This 752-bp cDNA encodes a putative 62-amino-acid-long protein that is 100% identical with the sequenced MT. Zinc, cadmium, and copper ions are very efficient inducers of MT mRNA accumulation in Xenopus liver and cell lines.

Abstract
In a search for genes transcriptionally regulated by metal ions, we have isolated a Xenopus laevis ferritin cDNA clone, XL2-17, from cadmium-poisoned XL2 cells. The large size of the corresponding ferritin mRNA (1.4 kb) is due to the presence of a 629-nucleotide 5'-untranslated region. The Xenopus ferritin sequence is highly isologous with other vertebrate ferritins. In particular, there is a complete sequence identity for the iron-responsive element (IRE) located in the 5'-untranslated region in both XL2-17 and Rana catesbeiana ferritin mRNAs. The position of this IRE is unusual since it is located 489 nucleotides from the 5' end of the ferritin mRNA. Our analysis of phylogenetic relationships among ferritins indicates that all amphibian ferritins thus far sequenced would be more closely related to the mammalian H-type ferritin than to the L-type. The level of ferritin mRNA in XL2 cells rises 10- to 15-fold following exposure of cells to cadmium or copper. This increase is due to both transcriptional and translational regulation. A 10-fold increase was also found at the protein level. These results suggest that ferritin may be a primary detoxification response to heavy metals in Xenopus cells.

Abstract
Plasma levels of vitamin E (Vit. E), total lipids (TL), Vit. E to TL ratio and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were studied in 20 patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery and randomly allocated to two anesthetic groups: propofol (bolus dose + continuous infusion and thiopental/isoflurane. Peripheral blood samples were withdrawn prior to induction, each hour during anesthesia and 1 h after the end of surgery. Mean Vit. E and TL levels as well as mean Vit. E to TL ratios remained in the normal range over the entire period of study whatever the anesthetic regimen. MPO levels rose significantly in the post-operative period only, but without statistical difference between the two groups. Therefore, anesthesia with propofol or thiopental/isoflurane modifies neither total lipid concentrations nor plasma Vit. E, which is a potent endogenous inhibitor of lipid peroxidation bound to lipoproteins. The rise of plasma MPO suggests a moderate post-operative neutrophil activation which is not influenced by anesthetic techniques.

Abstract
This paper describes the configuration and evaluation of a CCD-based biostereometric system at the Department of Orthodontics, Kings College Dental Hospital, London. The system has been designed to allow rapid and accurate measurement of facial soft-tissue shape with a minimum of traditional photogrammetric training. This has been achieved by automatic camera calibration and stereo matching, performed on a Sun Microsystem 3/160 workstation. In summary, the characteristics of the system are: (a) non-contract three-dimensional (3D) measurement of soft-tissue; (b) de-skilled, requiring little or no photogrammetric training; (c) rapid data acquisition, combined with slower off-line processing; (d) processing of resulting 3D surface information to yield cross-sections; (e) surface measurement accurate to within 0.5 mm. Accuracy assessment was performed using a manual electromechanical non-contact measurement device with precision exceeding the requirement of the biostereometric system.

Abstract
Several repeated DNA sequences were isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of the newt Pleurodeles waltl. These repeated DNA elements are dispersed over the 12 P. waltl bivalents, and some of them are transcribed in the oocyte. We describe the localization of label following in situ hybridization to nascent RNA attached to the lateral loops of lampbrush chromosomes. Variations in the number and the location of labelled loops were constantly found for several of the probes. The results are discussed in view of the "cotranscription model" of RNA synthesis on lampbrush chromosomes. We speculate on the possible origins of variation in transcription on lampbrush loops.

Abstract
A 21 year-old man presented with a history of sudden onset of aphasia and headache. CT showed a left parietal hypodensity and pallidal calcifications. The ECG showed a Wolff-Parkinson-White's syndrome. The patient then developed successively focal epileptic seizures, temper disorders, a cardiomyopathy, a pepper and salt retinopathy with hemeralopia, a left hemiplegia, deafness, and fever of unexplained origin. Left carotid angiography showed thin, irregular or occluded branches of the middle and anterior cerebral arteries. Blood muscle enzymes, lactate and pyruvate, were elevated with acidosis. Muscle biopsy revealed a mitochondrial myopathy and blood chemistry showed a severe deficiency of respiratory chain enzymes. Death occurred after 28 months. This case showed the diagnostic features of Melas, with some elements of the Kearns-Sayre syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the first case were serial angiographies allowed demonstration of arterial changes capable of explaining cerebral infarctions.

Abstract
Inpatients diagnosed as having borderline personality disorder (BPD) by DSM-III criteria who were admitted to 11 Central Neuropsychiatric Hospital Association (CNPHA) hospitals in 1982 and 1983 are described in terms of 28 clinical-history and demographic characteristics. This study statistically compared 181 BPD inpatients to 1,121 non-BPD inpatients admitted to the same hospitals during the same period as part of the broader CNPHA prospective outcome study. These BPD inpatients were also compared to other BPD samples described in the literature. The 1982-83 CNPHA BPD inpatients exhibited clinical and demographic characteristics significantly different from their non-BPD counterparts. These BPD inpatients, mostly female, may have had particularly difficult living situations, had extensive treatment histories that began early, were frequently self-destructive, and had a distinctive medication pattern, among other characteristics. Comparison to other BPD samples in the literature showed similarities, supporting the generalizability of the CNPHA prospective outcome study.

Abstract
Pleurodeles waltlii genomic DNA has been cloned using several phage lambda vectors. We have isolated approx. 600 000 clones, which correspond to about 20% of the total DNA sequences of this organism. This constitutes the first large gene library of a Urodele. The low yield of cloning was attributable to the abundance of highly repetitive sequences, since recombinations in the bacterial host could lead to the loss of clones. Indeed, the existence of highly repetitive sequences was directly demonstrated by hybridization between recombinants and the total genome, and some of the cloned DNA was found to be unstable. We suggest new methods for cloning the highly repetitive sequences.
