Recent advancement in ultrasound-assisted novel technologies for the extraction of bioactive compounds from herbal plants: a review

Herbal plants comprise potent bioactives, and they have a potential for the development of functional foods. Ultrasonication technology can be used to enhance the efficiency and quality of these bioactivities. The present review discussed the ultrasound-assisted novel extraction technologies (supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) and high pressurized liquid), including mechanistic understanding, influencing factors, extract process efficiency, and the recovery of bioactives with an industrial perspective. The strong observations of this study are the novel ultrasound-induced extraction process variables, such as ultrasound amplitude, sonication time, temperature, solid-solvent ratio, and pressure, are significantly influenced and must be optimized for maximum recovery of bioactives. The novel green technologies (ultrasound and assisted) could remarkably improve the extraction efficiency and enhance the quality of green extract. This review will support technological understanding about the impact on process parameters for the extraction of bioactives for the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Trends in functional beverages: Functional ingredients, processing technologies, stability, health benefits, and consumer perspective

The World Health Organization's emphasis on the health benefits of functional foods and beverages that has contributed to the rise in its popularity globally. Besides these consumers have become more aware of the importance of their food composition and nutrition. Among the fastest-growing market segments within the functional food industries, the functional drinks market focuses on fortified beverages or products that are novel with improved bioavailability of bioactive compounds, and their implicated health benefits. The bioactive ingredients in functional beverages include phenolic compounds, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, peptides, unsaturated fatty acids, etc. which can be obtained from plant, animal and microorganisms. The types of functional beverages which are globally intensifying the markets are pre-/pro-biotics, beauty drinks, cognitive and immune system enhancers, energy and sports drink produced via several thermal and non-thermal processes. Researchers are focusing on improving the stability of the active compounds by encapsulation, emulsion, and high-pressure homogenization techniques to strengthen the positive consumer perspective in functional beverages. However, more research is needed in terms of bioavailability, consumer safety, and sustainability of the process. Hence, product development, storage stability, and sensory properties of these products are vital for consumer acceptance. This review focuses on the recent trends and developments in the functional beverages industry. The review provides a critical discussion on diverse functional ingredients, bioactive sources, production processes, emerging process technologies, improvement in the stability of ingredients and bioactive compounds. This review also outlines the global market and consumer perception of functional beverages with the future perspective and scope.

Monitoring the lipid oxidation and fatty acid profile of oil using algorithm-assisted surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Deep-fat frying of food develops lipid oxidation products that deteriorate oil and pose a health risk. This necessitates the development of a rapid and accurate oil quality and safety detection technique. Herein, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and sophisticated chemometric techniques were used for rapid and label-free determination of peroxide value (PV) and fatty acid composition of oil in-situ. In the study, plasmon-tuned and biocompatible Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticle-based SERS substrates were used to obtain optimum enhancement despite matrix interference to efficiently detect the oil components. The potent combination of SERS and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method could determine the fatty acid profile and PV with upto 99% accuracy. Moreover, the SERS-ANN method could quantify the low level of trans fats, i.e., < 2%, with 97% accuracy. Therefore, the developed algorithm-assisted SERS system enabled the sleek and rapid monitoring and on-site detection of oil oxidation.

Correlating process parameters and print accuracy of 3D-printable heat acid coagulated milk semisolids and polyol matrix: implications for testing methods

The primary additive manufacturing (AM) technique for all high-viscosity food composites is extrusion-based. Therefore, understanding the impact of process parameters involved is crucial in fulfilling the demand characteristics of the printed constructs. In this regard, a correlation between print accuracy and critical 3D printing (3DP) process variables as a strategy for expediting the selection of 3D printable food inks has the most potential for success. This paper studies the effectiveness of using heat-acid coagulated milk semisolids and polyol matrix as 3D printable food ink for high-quality prints. The study focused on the critical material properties and conducted rheological characterization and particle size distribution analysis. The study obtained the effective range of printing parameters for various process variables using a mathematical model that employed finite element analysis (FEA) to define the flow field characteristics. The dimensional accuracy of the printed constructs under different process variables was determined by utilizing image processing methods. A multi-objective optimization was carried out using the desirability function method to obtain the key correlations between the process parameters for the best-printed construct.

Trends in millet and pseudomillet proteins - Characterization, processing and food applications

Millets are small-seeded crops which have been well adopted globally owing to their high concentration of macro and micronutrients such as protein, dietary fibre, essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. Considering their climate resilience and potential role in nutritional and health security, the year 2023 has been declared as 'International Year of Millets' by the United Nations. Cereals being the major nutrient vehicle for a majority population, and proteins being the second most abundant nutrient in millets, these grains can be a suitable alternative for plant-based proteins. Therefore, this review was written with an aim to succinctly provide an overview of the available literature take on the characterization, processing and applications of millet-based proteins. This information would play an important role in realizing the research gap restricting the utilization of complete potential of millet proteins. This can be further used by researchers and food industries for understanding the scope of millet proteins as an ingredient for novel food product development.

Multivariate analysis of chemometric based aroma dynamics in small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) during drying

The aroma compositions and essential oil contents extracted from small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) dried at three temperatures using a hot air convective dryer was studied by chromatographic methods. The major compounds in the dried samples were 1,8-cineole (7.23-11.76%) and α-Terpinyl acetate (61.65-68.19%) that were responsible for the specific aroma. The extracted essential oil was found to be majorly composed of alkenes (33-42%), alcohols (18-30%) and esters (18-22%) with acids, alkyls and ketones. The changes in esters and alcohols with drying time were more significant (p < 0.05) than acids, alkenes and aldehydes at all three temperatures. The data were analysed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis. The analyses indicated that the compounds varied significantly (p < 0.05) with drying temperatures. The PCA revealed that there was overall 66.47, 75.96 and 78.25% cumulative data variance among the constituents of essential oils of cardamom samples dried at 40, 50 and 60 °C respectively. The samples showed a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in aroma constituents after 26, 18 and 16 h of drying at 40, 50 and 60 °C respectively.

Effect of Psidium guajava leaves extracts on thermo-lipid oxidation and Maillard pathway born food toxicant acrylamide in Indian staple food

Deep frying of food is a common practice that leads to the formation of lipid oxidation products. These lipid oxidation products have a role in the Maillard reaction, which ultimately leads to the formation of cancer-causing and neurotoxic substance acrylamide. In this regard, the Psidium guajava leaves extract-treated sunflower oil on oxidative stability and acrylamide content in pooris a popular deep-fried staple food in India were studied and compared with synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) till four frying cycles. P. guajava leaves contain 173.33 ± 1.95 mg GAE/g extract total phenolic content and 20.43 ± 0.25 mg RUE/g extract total flavonoid content. Some of the phytochemicals in the extract were identified and quantified by HPTLC. P. guajava leaves extract (1 g) contained 0.039 mg gallic acid, 0.196 mg rutin, 0.021 mg naringenin, 0.059 mg ferulic acid. The IC50 values for guava leaves extract, BHT, and ascorbic acid were 61.4, 30.4, 26.6 µg/mL, respectively. The peroxide and p-anisidine values indicated that P. guajava leaves extract inhibited lipid oxidation and provided oxidative stability. Pooris fried in P. guajava leaves extract-treated, BHT treated sunflower oil contained a lower acrylamide than pooris fried in control sunflower oil.

Trans fatty acids in food: A review on dietary intake, health impact, regulations and alternatives

Trans fats are desired by the edible oil industry as they impart firmness, plasticity, and oxidative stability to oil. However, clinical trials have demonstrated the adverse effects of trans fats in food on human health and nutrition. Regulatory actions have been taken up by government and non-government bodies worldwide to eliminate the presence of trans fats in the food supply. The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a "REPLACE" action plan to eliminate trans-fat from the global food industry by 2023. A few enabling technologies are developed to mitigate trans fats namely, trait-enhanced oils, modification in the hydrogenation process, interesterification, fractionation, blending, and oleogelation. Some of them have the drawback of replacing trans-fat with saturated fats. Interesterification and oleogelation are in-trend techniques with excellent potential in replacing trans fats without compromising the desired functionality and nutritional quality attributes. This review presents an overview of trans fatty acid for example, its dietary intake in food products, possible adverse health impact, regulations, and approaches to reduce the usage of trans fats for food application. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The requirement for the replacement of trans fatty acids (TFAs) in food supply globally has challenged the food industry to find a novel substitute for trans fats without compromising the desired functionality and nutritional property. This review presents detailed background on trans fats, their health impacts and current trends of reformulation of oils and fats to mitigate their presence in food supply chains. Information compiled in this paper will help food scientists and technologists, chemists, food processors, and retailers as there is an urgent need to find novel technologies and substitutes to replace trans fats in processed foods.

1.3 µm dissipative soliton resonance generation in Bismuth doped fiber laser

In this work, a Figure-9 (F9) bismuth-doped fiber laser (BiDFL) operating in the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) regime is presented. The 1338 nm laser used a BiDF as the active gain medium, while a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) in an F9 configuration was employed to obtain high energy mode-locked pulses. The wave breaking-free rectangular pulse widened significantly in the time domain with the increase of the pump power while maintaining an almost constant peak power of 0.6 W. At the maximum pump power, the mode-locked laser delivered a rectangular-shaped pulse with a duration of 48 ns, repetition rate of 362 kHz and a radio-frequency signal-to-noise ratio of more than 60 dB. The maximum output power was recorded at around 11 mW with a corresponding pulse energy of 30 nJ. This is, to the best of the author's knowledge, the highest mode-locked pulse energy obtained at 1.3 μm as well as the demonstration of an NALM BiDFL in a F9 configuration.

Assessment of 3D printability of composite dairy matrix by correlating with its rheological properties

In this study, the potential of heat desiccated milk powder (HDMP) in a composite dairy matrix with semi skimmed milk powder (SSMP) was assessed for hot melt extrusion-based 3D printing. The rheological characteristics of formulations at three stages i.e., pre-printing, printing, and post-printing were investigated. The shear thinning with rapid shear recovery and thermoresponsive behavior of the formulations were analyzed to mimic the prevailing conditions of pre-processing, processing, and post-processing of formulations to understand the temperature induced variations in their rheological characteristics during each stage. The rheological properties were correlated with printability through assessment of the consistency of straight lines (1D), average area of lattice scaffolds (2D), and dimensional stability of the 3D printed constructs. Results demonstrated that an increase in the level of incorporation of SSMP and a decrease in the proportion of HDMP increased the shear thinning behavior, viscosity (ɳ), yield stress (τ₀), storage modulus (G') and a decline in the shear recoverability of the formulations. The thermoresponsive behavior of the formulations was established with gelation temperature ranging from 28.1 to 29.4˚C. The formulation SSMP (35): HDMP (25) resulted in sagging of the printed constructs, whereas the formulation SSMP (55): HDMP (5.0) exhibited the highest dimensional stability and shape retention post printing, owing to its maximum τ₀ (1211.8 Pa) and G' (7026.4 Pa). The results obtained could provide insight into improving the performance of an HME based 3D printing in the dairy and food industries.

Study on the dopant concentration ratio in thulium-holmium doped silica fibers for lasing at 2.1µm

We present the fabrication and laser performance of thulium-holmium co-doped silica fibers when cladding pumped at ∼790 nm. By using the hybrid gas phase-solution doping process in conjunction with the MCVD preform fabrication technique, the doping concentration and the Tm:Ho ratio were varied to study the energy transfer efficiency from Tm³⁺ to Ho³⁺. Our study indicates that for a thulium concentration that has resulted in an efficient two-for-one cross- relaxation process with 790 nm pumping, and while maintaining a Tm:Ho concentration ratio in the range ∼ 10 to 20, the energy transfer efficiency has reached above 75%. In a free-running laser cavity, the pump power limited laser output of 38W with a slope efficiency of 56% at 2.1 microns is demonstrated.

Study on the temperature dependent characteristics of O-band bismuth-doped fiber amplifier

We report the temperature dependent performance of an O-band bismuth (Bi)-doped fiber amplifier (BDFA) in the temperature range from -60 to +80°C. At room temperature, maximum gains of 27 and 40 dB with noise figures (NFs) of 4.3 and 4.8 dB are measured for -23  dBm signal power in the single and double pass BDFA, respectively. An increment in gain and reduction in NF is observed as the ambient temperature of the BDFA is reduced. In the double pass BDFA, the temperature dependent gain coefficient from -60 to +80°C is found to be around -0.02 and -0.03  dB/°C across the wavelength band of 1300-1360 nm for -10 and -23  dBm signal powers, respectively. We also study the gain and NF characteristics with pump power and signal power at different temperatures, and a maximum gain of 45 dB is obtained at -60°C for -30  dBm signal power.

40 dB gain all fiber bismuth-doped amplifier operating in the O-band

In this Letter, we investigate and compare the gain and noise figure characteristics of bismuth (Bi)-doped fiber amplifiers configured in both single and double signal pass implementations. A maximum gain of 25 dB and a noise figure of 4 dB is measured at 1360 nm in the single pass configuration for -23  dBm input signal power, whereas in the double pass configuration the gain of the amplifier is improved significantly by 14 dB allowing us to achieve a gain of 39 dB with a noise figure of 5 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest gain reported to date using Bi-doped fiber as a gain medium. Furthermore, we also study the gain and noise figure dependency on pump power, signal power, and pump wavelength for the double pass amplifier configuration. We observed similar gain and noise figure performance in the double pass configuration to that of the single pass configuration but with the benefit of less pump power and a shorter length of the Bi-doped fiber.

Highly efficient thulium-doped high-power laser fibers fabricated by MCVD

We report a hybrid process by combining both vapor-phase and solution-doping techniques of rare-earth doped preform fabrication in conjunction with the MCVD technique, in order to fabricate highly efficient Tm-doped laser fibers. The proposed fabrication route takes advantage of co-doping silica with high alumina content through the vapor-phase doping process, which is otherwise difficult to achieve using conventional solution doping technique. In addition, by employing the solution doping method, high-purity thulium halide precursors that have low vapor pressures up to several hundred degree Celsius. These high-purity thulium halide precursors can be used to dope the fiber core region with a high thulium concentration that is optimized for an efficient two-for-one cross-relaxation process for 79xnm diode pumped thulium-doped fiber laser. Fibers fabricated using the hybrid approach show more homogeneous and flat-top dopant profiles, compared with the conventional approach, where both aluminum and thulium are incorporated in the core through solution doping. This will ensure that more doped region will take part in the cross-relaxation process. Superior laser performance with a slope efficiency of >70% in the two-micron band has been demonstrated when diode pumped at ~790nm.

Temperature dependent steady and dynamic oscillatory shear rheological characteristics of Indian cow milk (Desi) ghee

Rheological characteristics of Desi ghee were investigated at 18, 24, 30 and 36 °C. The steady shear properties were evaluated by varying the shear rate from 0.01 to 100 s^-1 and the dynamic shear properties were studied by varying strain and frequency sweep from 0.01 to 100% and 0.1 to 100 rad s^-1, respectively. At the four selected temperatures, the ghee samples displayed non-Newtonian shear thinning behavior with flow behavior index (n) ranging from 0.224 to 0.911. As the shear rate increased from 0 to 100 s^-1, the values of dynamic viscosity decreased from 54 to 8.14, 20.01 to 1.05, 1.33 to 0.295, and 3.02 to 0.0025 Pa s at 18, 24, 30 and 36 °C, respectively. Out of four rheological models (Power-law or Ostwald-de Waele, Herschel-Bulkley, Casson, and Bingham model) fitted to the shear rate and stress data, the Ostwald model was found to be superior in predicting the shear rate-stress data at 18 °C, whereas Ostwald-de Waele and Herschel-Bulkley models predicted all the data points over the temperature range of 24-30 °C, as observed by the values of coefficient of determination (R² ), standard deviation (SD), and relative deviation percentage (R_d ). The value of activation energy (E_A ), as calculated from Arrhenius type equation, was found to be 1.98 × 10⁶ kJ mol^-1 over the entire temperature range. The study also revealed that the magnitudes of dynamic shear viscosity (η*) were higher than those of the steady shear viscosity (η) at the four temperatures, indicating that the Cox-Merz rule was not applicable to the ghee samples.

Bismuth-doped all-fiber mode-locked laser operating at 1340 nm

We demonstrate a 1340 nm mode-locked Bismuth (Bi)-doped fiber laser without any saturable absorber. The effect of pump power on pulse width is studied, and a variation from 1.5 to 3 ns is reported. The output of the mode-locked Bi-doped fiber laser is further amplified using a master oscillator power amplifier configuration, and a peak power of 1.15 W is achieved. Soliton bunching is observed, and a true pulse width of 1.2 ps is reported from the measured autocorrelation trace. Stable operation of the mode-locked laser is verified from the radio-frequency spectrum with a fundamental repetition rate of 6.3 MHz, and SNR of 65 dB.

Study of sorption behavior, shelf life and colour kinetics of vacuum puffed honey powder at accelerated storage conditions

In the study, the storage life of vacuum puffed honey powder at accelerated storage environment (90 % relative humidity and 36 °C) was computed by determining the sticky-point moisture content as the critical parameter of the honey powder. The value of monolayer moisture content in the GAB model was calculated to be 0.081 kg water/kg dry solids by fitting water activity and moisture sorption data. Shelf life of the honey powder was predicted to be 222 days when the powder was packaged in aluminum foil-laminated polyethylene pouches with permeability value of 5.427X10(-8) kg/m(2)//day/Pa. Actual shelf life of honey powder was experimentally determined as 189 days and analysis of mean relative percent derivation modulus (Rd) and root mean square (RMS) established the accuracy and acceptability of the technique for the prediction of shelf life of honey powder. Overall colour deviation pattern followed first order reaction kinetics with rate constant (k1) as 0.037 day(-1). This study revealed overall colour difference of 18.1 till the end of shelf life with drastic change during initial storage period.

Exploiting the short wavelength gain of silica-based thulium-doped fiber amplifiers

Short wavelength operation (1650-1800 nm) of silica-based thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs) is investigated. We report the first demonstration of in-band diode-pumped silica-based TDFAs working in the 1700-1800 nm waveband. Up to 29 dB of small-signal gain is achieved in this spectral region, with an operation wavelength accessible by diode pumping as short as 1710 nm. Further gain extension toward shorter wavelengths is realized in a fiber laser pumped configuration. A silica-based TDFA working in the 1650-1700 nm range with up to 29 dB small-signal gain and noise figure as low as 6.5 dB is presented.

Bi-doped fiber amplifier with a flat gain of 25 dB operating in the wavelength band 1320-1360 nm

Bismuth (Bi)-doped phosphosilicate fibers have been fabricated by the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD)-solution doping technique under different process conditions. The influence of fabrication conditions on unsaturable loss in fibers has been investigated. Pump wavelength dependent Bi gain has been studied to obtain a flat gain over a wide bandwidth. A diode pumped all-fiber Bi-doped amplifier with a flat gain of 25±1  dB from 1320-1360 nm (40 nm) has been demonstrated for -10  dBm of input signal power with a noise figure (NF) ranging from 4-6 dB. Moreover, a small signal gain of 29 dB and a NF of 4.5 dB at 1340 nm has been achieved for an input signal power of -30  dBm.

Highly efficient Yb-free Er-La-Al doped ultra-low NA large mode area single-trench fiber laser

We demonstrate a 60µm core diameter Yb free Er-La-Al doped single-trench fiber having a 0.038 ultra-low-NA, fabricated using conventional MCVD process in conjunction with solution doping technique. Numerical simulations predict an effective single mode operation with effective area varying from 1,820µm(2) to 1,960µm(2) (taking bend-induced modal distortion into account) for different thicknesses of trenches and resonant rings at a constant bend radius of 25cm. Moreover, all solid structure favors easy cleaving and splicing. Experimental measurements demonstrate a robust effective single mode operation. Furthermore, with a 4%-4% laser cavity, this fiber shows a record efficiency of 46% with respect to the absorbed pump power.

Large mode area multi-trench fiber for UV and visible transmission

We experimentally demonstrate all-solid 10 and 20 μm core diameter multi-trench fibers for UV and visible wavelengths. Measurements ensure an effective single-mode operation over a wide range of bend radii, which is suitable for applications such as beam delivery. Both fibers were fabricated by the conventional modified chemical vapor deposition process, which is suitable for mass production. Moreover, all-solid fiber design ensures easy cleaving and splicing.

High power, compact, picosecond MOPA based on single trench fiber with single polarized diffraction-limited output

We experimentally demonstrate an all-solid Yb-doped 30 μm core diameter single trench fiber. Measurements ensure a robust effective single-mode operation without the need of tight coiling as required for conventional fibers thanks to the ultralow NA (∼0.038) and resonant ring surrounding the core. All-solid and cylindrical design ensures the suitability for mass scale production with the added benefit of all-fiberized device structure. A compact master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) has been built using this fiber delivering ∼23.5  ps pulses at 13.5 MHz repetition rate delivering up to ∼52  W of average output power corresponding to a pulse energy of ∼3.8  μJ and peak power of >160  kW, while maintaining ∼76% slope efficiency. The output beam exhibits a polarization extinction ratio of more than 15 dB and a M2 less than 1.15.

1120 nm diode-pumped Bi-doped fiber amplifier

Bismuth-doped aluminosilicate fiber has been fabricated by the MCVD-solution doping method and characterized for its unsaturable loss and gain. The amplifier performance has been compared for a novel pumping wavelength of 1120 nm with the conventional pumping wavelength region of 1047 nm. Unsaturable loss was 65% and 35% at 1047 and 1120 nm, pump wavelengths, respectively. A maximum gain of about 8 dB at 1180 nm for a fiber length of 100 m was observed with 1120 nm pumping. Gain enhancement of 70% was achieved with the 1120 nm pump as compared to the 1047 nm pump. A further 3.5 dB gain was obtained on simultaneous pumping at 1047 and 1120 nm.

Extending single mode performance of all-solid large-mode-area single trench fiber

We report a novel "single trench fiber" design for mode area scaling of the fundamental mode while offering effective single mode operation for a compact fiber laser device. This fiber design allows very high suppression of the higher order modes by offering high loss and power delocalization. It has the advantages of low cost and easy fabrication thanks to all solid fiber design, cylindrical symmetry, and higher refractive index of core as that of the cladding. A Yb-doped single trench fiber with a 40 µm core diameter has been fabricated from modified chemical vapor deposition process in conjunction with solution-doping offering an effective mode area of as large as ~1,000 µm(2) at 1,060 nm for the bend radius of 20 cm. Detailed characterizations confirm a robust single mode behavior of the fiber. Comparative analysis with other fiber designs shows significant performance enhancement of effective single mode operation suitable for fiber laser applications.

Few-mode multi-element fiber amplifier for mode division multiplexing

We experimentally demonstrate a few-moded cladding-pumped multi-element fiber amplifier, comprising 4 Er/Yb co-doped signal fibers and 1 multimode pump-delivery fiber all of which are drawn together in a common polymer coating, providing a total spatial path multiplicity of 12. An average WDM signal gain of 18.3 dB and differential modal gain of 1.1 dB were achieved in the spectral range of 1542-1560 nm.

Cladding pumped few-mode EDFA for mode division multiplexed transmission

We experimentally demonstrate a few-mode erbium doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) supporting 6 spatial modes with a cladding pumped architecture. Average modal gains are measured to be >20dB between 1534nm-1565nm with a differential modal gain of ~3dB among the mode groups and noise figures of 6-7dB. The cladding pumped FM-EDFA offers a cost effective alternative to core-pumped variant as low cost, high power multimode pumps can be used, and offers performance, scalability and simplicity to FM-EDFA design.

Process Optimization and Quality Analysis of Carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) Wine

The juice extracted from carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) fruits was used for wine production after reconstituting with distilled water, 50% (w/v) sugar syrup and 0.1 N oxalic acid at different concentrations to attain a range of different independent processing parameters. The processing conditions i.e., pH, fermentation temperature, inoculum size, and total soluble solids (TSS) were optimized on the basis of percentage of ethanol production. At optimum processing conditions of pH = 4.5, temperature = 26°C, inoculums size = 12% (v/v), and TSS = 24°B, the production of ethanol percentage in the wine was 12.15 ± 0.28% (v/v). At this optimum condition, the values of titratable acidity, total sugar, reducing sugar, and TSS were 0.76 ± 0.21% (w/w), 2.84 ± 0.22% (w/w), 2.65 ± 0.16% (w/w), and 4.6 ± 0.06°B, respectively. Color of the wine was observed to be light greenish yellow, but pH level which was 3.94 ± 0.17 was slightly higher than that of the acceptable limit. Sensory evaluation showed that the wine possessed very good taste, aroma, and clarity with moderately good body and aftertaste. It was also observed that the wine undergoes color changes during storage with more stability at lower storage temperature.

First demonstration of a 2μm few-mode TDFA for mode division multiplexing

We report the first demonstration of an inline few-mode thulium doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) operating at 2μm for mode division multiplexed transmission. Similar gain and noise figure performance for both the LP(01) and LP(11) modes are obtained in a cladding pumped 2-mode group TDFA. A maximum gain of 18.3dB was measured at 1970nm with a 3dB gain bandwidth of 75nm while the average noise figure was measured to be between 7 and 8dB for wavelengths longer than 1970nm.

High-energy diode-seeded nanosecond 2 μm fiber MOPA systems incorporating active pulse shaping

We report on high-energy nanosecond-pulsed fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) systems seeded by semiconductor laser diodes at 2 μm incorporating arbitrary pulse-shaping capabilities. Two MOPA systems, one based on direct diode modulation and the second using additional electro-optic modulator (EOM) based shaping, are investigated, with up to 0.5 mJ (25 kHz) and 1.0 mJ (12.5 kHz) pulse energies achieved, respectively, for 100 ns pulses with user-defined pulse shapes. Our results indicate that further energy scaling with shaped output pulses is primarily limited by the maximum pulse peak power available from the seed laser diode and the dynamic range offered by the first generation of EOMs at 2 μm.

Multi-element fiber technology for space-division multiplexing applications

A novel technological approach to space division multiplexing (SDM) based on the use of multiple individual fibers embedded in a common polymer coating material is presented, which is referred to as Multi-Element Fiber (MEF). The approach ensures ultralow crosstalk between spatial channels and allows for cost-effective ways of realizing multi-spatial channel amplification and signal multiplexing/demultiplexing. Both the fabrication and characterization of a passive 3-element MEF for data transmission, and an active 5-element erbium/ytterbium doped MEF for cladding-pumped optical amplification that uses one of the elements as an integrated pump delivery fiber is reported. Finally, both components were combined to emulate an optical fiber network comprising SDM transmission lines and amplifiers, and illustrate the compatibility of the approach with existing installed single-mode WDM fiber systems.

Effect of UV-C on thylakoid arrangement, pigment content and nitrogenase activity in the cyanobacterium Microchaete sp

The effect of UV-C radiation on thylakoid arrangement, chlorophyll-a and carotenoid content and nitrogenase activity of the cyanobacterium Microchaete sp. was studied. Chlorophyll-a and carotenoid content increased gradually up to 48 h of UV-C exposure but declined with longer exposures. Nitrogenase activity decreased moderately with 6 to 12 h exposure and decreased substantially afterwards. When cells exposed to UV-C for 12 to 24 h, grown under fluorescent light for 144 h, nitrogenase activity increased to levels greater than in the control cells. The exposure of UV-C treated cells to fluorescent light, however, did not result in recovery of pigment content. In Microchaete sp. cells treated with UV-C for 144 h, thylakoid membranes became dense, were aggregated into bundles, and were surrounded by spaces devoid of cytoplasm.

Erbium-doped multi-element fiber amplifiers for space-division multiplexing operations

Erbium-doped multi-element fiber (MEF) amplifiers have been fabricated to simultaneously amplify multiple transmission channels. MEF devices comprise of multiple single-core fibers (elements) combined in a common coating, with each element working as a single fiber in isolation. MEFs containing 3-elements and 7-elements have been fabricated and characterized. Each element of the fabricated MEFs provides nearly 32 dB of gain with a noise figure of <5 dB for an input signal level of -23 dBm at 1530 nm. Different permutations of element pairs within the MEFs were checked for crosstalk and none was detected, confirming the simultaneous multi-channel amplification capabilities of MEFs.

73.7 Tb/s (96 x 3 x 256-Gb/s) mode-division-multiplexed DP-16QAM transmission with inline MM-EDFA

Transmission of a 73.7 Tb/s (96 x 3 x 256-Gb/s) DP-16QAM mode-division-multiplexed signal over 119 km of few-mode fiber transmission line incorporating an inline multi mode EDFA and a phase plate based mode (de-)multiplexer is demonstrated. Data-aided 6 x 6 MIMO digital signal processing was used to demodulate the signal. The total demonstrated net capacity, taking into account 20% of FEC-overhead and 7.5% additional overhead (Ethernet and training sequences), is 57.6 Tb/s, corresponding to a spectral efficiency of 12 bits/s/Hz.

Q-switched neodymium-doped Y3Al5O12-based silica fiber laser

We present pulsed laser operation in a Nd-doped, Y3Al5O12-based silica fiber. The fiber was fabricated using the rod-in-tube technique with a Nd:YAG crystal rod as the core material and a silica tube for the cladding material. A spectroscopy study revealed that the core region had become amorphous in the process of fiber drawing. Q-switched pulsed laser operation was realized at a wavelength of 1058 nm when the fiber was cladding pumped at a wavelength of 808 nm. The laser delivered 38 μJ of energy in 65 ns pulses. The extracted energy was limited due to the multimodal operation of the fiber. Laser slope efficiency in continuous wave operation reached 52%. The spectroscopic properties of the fabricated fiber are discussed and compared to a Nd:YAG crystal and a Nd:Al-doped silica fiber.
