Size and fixation options of dorsoulnar fragments in distal radius fractures

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate the influence of size and fixation options of dorsoulnar fragments on the clinical outcomes of distal radius fractures (DRFs).

METHODS

This retrospective analysis was performed on 94 patients with DFR accompanied by dorsoulnar fragments, spanning the period from October 2018 to November 2022. Mean follow-up was 15.5 (range, 12-20) months. Patients were divided into small- (<5 %, n = 28), middle- (5-15 %, n = 50), and large- (>15 %, n = 16) sized groups according to articular involvement of dorsoulnar fragments determined by three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) modeling. Subdivision also took place for the presence of postoperative fragment displacement (>2 mm) and fixation methods including volar locking plate (VLP), VLP combined with dorsal hollow compression screw (VDS), and VLP combined with dorsal low-profile mini plate (VDP). The radiographic parameters (volar tilt, radial inclination, and radial height) and functional outcome measures of wrist range of motion, wrist function (DASH, PRWE), and wrist pain (VAS) were evaluated and compared between groups.

RESULTS

Fracture healing was observed in all patients at final follow-up. No instances of dorsoulnar fragment displacement were observed in patients undergoing VDS and VDP treatment and the incidence of the dorsoulnar fragment displacement was 35 % (n = 8) in small-sized group, 21 % (n = 7) in middle-sized group, and 7 % (n = 1) in large-sized group when patients were treated with VLP. In small-sized group, no significant differences were found between patients with and without dorsoulnar fragment displacement in dorsiflexion restriction (10.6 ± 2.8°, 9.1 ± 2.3°, P = 0.159), pronosupination restriction (9.6 ± 2.1°, 8.6 ± 1.7°, P = 0.188), DASH (11.5 ± 4.1, 10.7 ± 3.2, P = 0.562), PRWE (11.9 ± 4.2, 10.6 ± 3.6, P = 0.425), and VAS (1.1 ± 1.1, 0.9 ± 1.0, P = 0.528). In middle-sized combined with large-sized group, the functional outcome measures of dorsiflexion restriction (12.5 ± 3.7°, 9.8 ± 2.9°, P = 0.022), DASH (14.6 ± 5.2, 11.4 ± 3.7, P = 0.030), and PRWE (15.0 ± 4.5, 11.3 ± 3.9, P = 0.016) were superior in patients without dorsoulnar fragment displacement. In patients treated with VLPs, no significant differences were found in dorsiflexion restriction (9.8 ± 2.5°, 10.8 ± 3.5°, 9.4 ± 2.5°, P = 0.299), pronosupination restriction (9.2 ± 1.9°, 10.1 ± 2.8°, 8.9 ± 1.5°, P = 0.200), DASH (11.1 ± 3.5, 12.9 ± 4.3, 11.1 ± 3.6, P = 0.162), PRWE (11.1 ± 3.9, 12.8 ± 4.2, 10.8 ± 3.9, P = 0.188), and VAS (1.0 ± 1.0, 1.4 ± 1.1, 0.9 ± 0.9, P = 0.151) between small-sized, middle-sized, and large-sized groups. In middle-sized group, no significant differences were found in dorsiflexion restriction (10.8 ± 3.5°, 9.4 ± 2.2°, 9.4 ± 2.4°, P = 0.316); pronosupination restriction (10.1 ± 2.8°, 8.8 ± 1.9°, 9.0 ± 2.5°, P = 0.314), DASH (12.9 ± 4.3, 10.3 ± 3.7, 10.5 ± 3.7, P = 0.133), PRWE (12.8 ± 4.2, 10.4 ± 3.8, 10.6 ± 4.1, P = 0.199), and VAS (1.4 ± 1.1, 0.8 ± 0.7, 1.0 ± 1.1, P = 0.201) between subgroups of VLP, VDS, and VDP. No significant differences were found in radiographic parameters between all groups compared.

CONCLUSION

This study indicated that the strict reduction and fixation of a dorsoulnar fragment might be not essential when its articular involvement was less than 5 %. The volar locking plate (VLP) fixation was commonly effective in treating distal radius fractures accompanied by a dorsoulnar fragment involving over 15 % of the articular surface. Additionally, the use of an additional dorsal hollow compression screw or a dorsal low-profile mini plate can get good wrist function in the early-term follow-up when the dorsoulnar fragment involve 5-15 % of the articular surface.

Exploring pathogenesis and biomarkers through establishment of a rat model of male infertility with liver depression and kidney deficiency

OBJECTIVES

To establish a rat model that accurately replicates the clinical characteristics of male infertility (MI) with Liver Depression and Kidney Deficiency (LD & KD) and investigate the pathogenesis.

METHODS

After subjecting the rats to chronic restraint stress (CRS) and adenine treatment, a series of tests were conducted, including ethological assessments, evaluations of reproductive characteristics, measurements of biochemical parameters, histopathological examinations, and analyses of urinary metabolites. Additionally, bioinformatics predictions were performed for comprehensive analysis.

RESULTS

Compared to the control, the model exhibited significant manifestations of MI with LD & KD, including reduced responsiveness, diminished frequency of capturing estrous female rats, and absence of mounting behavior. Additionally, the kidney coefficient increased markedly, while the coefficients of the testis and epididymis decreased significantly. Sperm counts and viabilities decreased notably, accompanied by an increase in sperm abnormalities. Dysregulation of reproductive hormone levels in the serum was observed, accompanied by an upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines expressions in the liver and kidney, as well as exacerbated oxidative stress in the penile corpus cavernosum and testis. The seminiferous tubules in the testis exhibited a loose arrangement, loss of germ cells, and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Furthermore, utilizing urinary metabolomics and bioinformatics analysis, 5 key biomarkers and 2 crucial targets most closely linked to MI were revealed.

CONCLUSION

The study successfully established a clinically relevant animal model of MI with LD & KD. It elucidates the pathogenesis of the condition, identifies key biomarkers and targets, and provides a robust scientific foundation for the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of MI with LD & KD.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the μμbb and ττbb final states

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H ) with a mass of 125Ge V to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two b quarks and the other to a pair of muons or τ leptons. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te V corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL ) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b , via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17-3.3) × 10 - 4 and (1.7-7.7) × 10 - 2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 → ℓ ℓ b b ) at 95% CL , with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space, B ( H → a 1 a 1 ) values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60Ge V .

Development and validation of the Sinonasal Endoscopic Score (SiNES) for chronic rhinosinusitis

BACKGROUND

Although there are several endoscopic grading systems for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), they are limited in their range and applicability. We developed a SiNonasal Endoscopic Score (SiNES) that builds upon the strengths of previous systems while addressing their limitations.

METHODS

The SiNES system was developed by consensus after multiple rounds of guided discussions. Face, content, and convergent validity were investigated. It was validated using an independent sample of 79 CRS individuals from two referral centres from September 2021 to February 2022. Each patient underwent a sinonasal endoscopy and filled PROM questionnaires. Three independent rhinologists graded endoscopic videos using the SiNES and modified Lund-Kennedy (MLK) scores. Inter-rater and test-retest reliability were assessed via the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). SiNES and MLK scores were correlated with PROMs using a Spearman correlation and canonical correlation analysis (CCA).

RESULTS

The SiNES system evaluates five anatomical spaces regarding edema, discharge, and scarring. Face, content, and convergent validity were deemed satisfactory by the study authors and an independent panel of Otolaryngologists. Inter-rater reliability was excellent for the SiNES and good for the MLK score. Test-retest reliability was excellent for both systems. Total SiNES was correlated with self-reported smell loss.

CONCLUSIONS

The SiNES system is an accurate and reliable grading framework applicable to all CRS subtypes. It can be utilized in clinical and research settings and improves upon previously published systems.

Observation of WWγ Production and Search for Hγ Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The observation of WWγ production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} is presented. The observed (expected) significance is 5.6 (5.1) standard deviations. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (one electron and one muon) of opposite charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and a photon. The measured fiducial cross section for WWγ is 5.9±0.8(stat)±0.8(syst)±0.7(modeling)  fb, in agreement with the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics prediction. The analysis is extended with a search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a photon, which is generated by a coupling of the Higgs boson to light quarks. The result is used to constrain the Higgs boson couplings to light quarks.

Modified Ileal Conduit for Pelvic Lipomatosis: Technique Description and Outcome

INTRODUCTION

To present the surgical technique and clinical outcomes of modified ileal conduit for pelvic lipomatosis (PL).

METHODS

From 2020 to 2022, we prospectively enrolled 9 patients with PL undergoing modified ileal conduit. The patient characteristics, perioperative variables, and follow-up outcomes as well as the description of surgical technique were reported.

RESULTS

All 9 patients successfully completed the operation. Two patients had perioperative complications of Clavien-Dindo grade I. The mean operation time and bleeding volumes were 253±51.4 min and 238.9±196.9 ml, with a mean postoperative follow-up time of 13.0±5.6 months. The postoperative 3-month and 1-year creatinine values were significantly decreased versus the preoperative (P=0.006 and P=0.024). The postoperative 3-month and 1-year eGFR values were significantly increased comapred with those before operation (P=0.0002 and P=0.018). The separation value of left renal pelvis collection system after operation were significantly reduced compared with preoperative evaluation (P=0.023 at 3 month and P=0.042 at 1 year) and so was the right side (P=0.019 and P=0.023).

CONCLUSION

Modified ileal conduit is safe and feasible for PL. A large sample cohort with long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of PL.

New Structures in the J/ψJ/ψ Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the J/ψJ/ψ invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135  fb^{-1}. Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6638_{-38}^{+43}(stat)_{-31}^{+16}(syst)  MeV. Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6847_{-28}^{+44}(stat)_{-20}^{+48}(syst)  MeV, which is consistent with the X(6900) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7134_{-25}^{+48}(stat)_{-15}^{+41}(syst)  MeV. Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference.

Enhancing Light Outcoupling Efficiency via Anisotropic Low Refractive Index Electron Transporting Materials for Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Thanks to the extensive efforts toward optimizing perovskite crystallization properties, high-quality perovskite films with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield are successfully achieved. However, the light outcoupling efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is impeded by insufficient light extraction, which poses a challenge to the further advancement of PeLEDs. Here, an anisotropic multifunctional electron transporting material, 9,10-bis(4-(2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-1-yl)phenyl) anthracene (BPBiPA), with a low extraordinary refractive index (ne ) and high electron mobility is developed for fabricating high-efficiency PeLEDs. The anisotropic molecular orientations of BPBiPA can result in a low ne of 1.59 along the z-axis direction. Optical simulations show that the low ne of BPBiPA can effectively mitigate the surface plasmon polariton loss and enhance the photon extraction efficiency in waveguide mode, thereby improving the light outcoupling efficiency of PeLEDs. In addition, the high electron mobility of BPBiPA can facilitate balanced carrier injection in PeLEDs. As a result, high-efficiency green PeLEDs with a record external quantum efficiency of 32.1% and a current efficiency of 111.7 cd A-1 are obtained, which provides new inspirations for the design of electron transporting materials for high-performance PeLEDs.

Chinese family care partners of older adults in Canada have grit: A qualitative study

AIM

To explain the process taken by Chinese family care partners of older adults in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, to access health and social services in their communities. The research question was: What mechanisms and structures impact the agency of Chinese family care partners of older adults, in the process of assisting them to access health and social services?

DESIGN

This qualitative study was informed by critical realism.

METHODS

Chinese family care partners of older adults in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, were interviewed from August 2020 to June 2021. Transcripts underwent thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

Twenty-eight Chinese family care partners expressed a firm commitment to maintain caregiving conditions and to judiciously access health and social services. Their commitment was made up of three parts: (a) legislative and cultural norms of family, work, and society; (b) their perseverance to fill gaps with limited social and financial resources; (c) the quality of their relationship to, and illness trajectory of the older adults. The social structures created tension in how Chinese family care partners made decisions, negotiated resources, and ultimately monitored and coordinated timely access with older adults.

CONCLUSION

Participants' commitment and perseverance were conceptualized as "grit," central to their agency to conform to legislative and cultural norms. Moreover, findings support grit's power to motivate and sustain family caregiving, in order for older adults to age in place as long as possible with finite resources.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION

This study highlights the importance of cultural awareness education for nurses, enabling continuity of care at a systems level and for a more resilient healthcare system.

IMPACT

Family care partners' grit may be crucial for nurses to harness when together, they face limited access to culturally appropriate health and social services in a system grounded in values of equity and inclusion, as in Canada.

A silver-mediated radical process of β-keto sulfones for the synthesis of 2,3-diacyl furans

A facile and efficient method for constructing 2,3-diacyl trisubstituted furans via a silver-mediated radical process of β-keto sulfones is developed. The reaction mechanism has been carefully investigated, revealing that the transformation proceeds through a radical pathway, leading to moderate to good yields of desired products.

Comprehensive Analysis of the Expression of Cell Adhesion Molecules Genes in Hepatocellular Carcinoma and their Prognosis, and Biological Significance

BACKGROUND

Collagen-related cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and often accumulate in the liver during chronic liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study we identified several promising collagens related to CAMs that may be of clinical use for the diagnosis and prognosis of HCC.

METHODS

We obtained multi-omics data including RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data, microarray data, proteomic data from the TCGA, GEO databases, GTEx, and NODE. Bioinformatics analyses were then performed to investigate correlations between the expression patterns of significant genes and HCC. Tumor tissue and para-cancerous tissue samples from HCC patients were also used to validate the results using RT-PCR.

RESULTS

A literature research and LASSO-COX analysis identified three significant collagen-related CAM genes: SERPINH1, DCN, and ITGB1. Immunohistochemistry images in the Human Protein Atlas Project database showed that SERPINH1 and ITGB1 proteins were moderately or highly expressed in HCC tumor tissues compared to para-cancerous tissue, whereas DCN expression was lower in HCC tumor tissue. These results were validated by RT-PCR. Low- and high-risk groups of HCC patients were distinguished by the logistic panel in the TCGA database. These showed significantly different prognosis, clinicopathological features, and immune cell infiltration. Logistic regression was used to construct predictive models based on the individual expression levels of DCN, SERPINH1, and ITGB1. These showed highly accurate diagnostic ability (AUC = 0.987).

CONCLUSIONS

The current findings suggest that the collagen-related CAMs DCN, SERPINH1, and ITGB1 may be potential therapeutic targets in HCC. Logistic panels of DCN, SERPINH1 and ITGB1 could serve as non-invasive and effective diagnostic biomarkers for HCC.

Search for Scalar Leptoquarks Produced via τ-Lepton-Quark Scattering in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ-lepton-quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark-τ-quark coupling strength.

Polychromatic and collimated lights generated by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in cesium vapor

We demonstrate the generation of polychromatic and collimated lights at 456 nm, 459 nm, and 761 nm based on cesium (133Cs) 6S1/2 - 6P3/2 - 8S1/2 - 7P3/2, 7P1/2, 6P1/2 - 6S1/2 multi-diamond-type atomic system via two-photon excitation with two IR pump lasers at 852 nm and 795 nm. The 456 nm, 459 nm (7P3/2, 7P1/2 → 6S1/2) collimated blue lights result from the self-seeded four-wave mixing process (FWM), and the 761 nm coherent light (8S1/2 → 6P1/2) is from a seeded FWM process with the injection of a third laser at 895 nm. We measure the dependency of generated polychromatic fields on the temperature of 133Cs vapor cell and the powers of input lasers, clearly demonstrating the competition between the self-seeded FWM and seeded FWM, as they share the same excitation path. This work is helpful to further produce entangled multi-color photons for quantum communication.

Search for Inelastic Dark Matter in Events with Two Displaced Muons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016-2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ(pp→A^{'}→χ_{1}χ_{2}) and the decay branching fraction B(χ_{2}→χ_{1}μ^{+}μ^{-}), where A^{'} is a dark photon and χ_{1} and χ_{2} are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter.

Multidimensional Optimization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for Carotenoid Overproduction

Microbial synthesis of carotenoids is a highly desirable alternative to plant extraction and chemical synthesis. In this study, we investigated multidimensional strategies to improve the carotenoid synthesis in the industrial workhorse of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. First, we rewired the yeast central metabolism by optimizing non-oxidative glycolysis pathway for an improved acetyl-CoA supply. Second, we restricted the consumption of farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) by the down-regulation of squalene synthase using the PEST degron. Third, we further explored the human lipid binding/transfer protein saposin B (hSapB)-mediated metabolic sink for an enhanced storage of lipophilic carotenoids. Last, the copper-induced GAL expression system was engineered to function in the yeast-peptone-dextrose medium for an increased biomass accumulation. By combining the abovementioned strategies, the final engineered yeast produced 166.79 ± 10.43 mg/l β-carotene in shake flasks, which was nearly 5-fold improvement of the parental carotenoid-producing strain. Together, we envision that multidimensional strategies reported here might be applicable to other hosts for the future industrial development of carotenoid synthesis from renewable feedstocks.

[Analysis on occupational dust or harmful gas exposure and protection in people aged 40 and above in China, 2019-2020]

Objective: To understand the current status of occupational exposure to dust or harmful gases and occupational protection in people aged ≥40 years in China, and provide data support for the prevention and control of occupational dust or harmful gas exposure. Methods: The data were obtained from the surveillance for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults aged ≥40 years selected by multi-stage stratified cluster sampling from 125 surveillance points in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) during 2014-2015 and 2019-2020, and relevant information about occupational dust or harmful gas exposure and protection measures were collected through face-to-face interviews. Occupational dust or harmful gas exposure rate and occupational protection rate were estimated by using weighting complex sampling methods, and then the results were compared. Results: From 2014 to 2015 and from 2019 to 2020, a total of 71 061 and 71 023 individuals aged ≥40 years were surveyed, respectively. The rate of occupational exposure to dust or hazardous gas was 33.8% (95%CI: 29.9%-37.7%) during 2019-2020. The occupational exposure rate was higher in men than in women and in rural residents than in urban residents. With the increase of education level, the rate of occupational exposure to dust or harmful gas showed a downward trend. The protection rate against occupational dust or hazardous gas exposure was 47.9% (95%CI: 43.2%-52.6%) during 2019-2020. Compared with 2014-2015, the rate of occupational exposure to dust or hazardous gas decreased by 10.7 percentage points in different gender, area and occupational groups and the occupational protection rate increased by 21.9 percentage points during 2019-2020. The decrease in occupational exposure rate was higher in western China than in eastern and central China, and the increase in occupational protection rate was higher in western China than in eastern and central China. Conclusions: The rate of occupational exposure to dust or harmful gas decreased and the rate of occupational protection against dust or harmful gas exposure increased in China during 2019-2020. However, about one-third of the population still suffer from the occupational exposure, and less than half of them take protection measures. It is necessary to pay more attention to the key populations, such as workers with lower cultural level and rural migrant workers, in occupational health practice.

Luminosity determination using Z boson production at the CMS experiment

The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected. The total number of Z bosons produced in a fiducial volume is determined, together with the identification efficiencies and correlations from the same data set, in small intervals of 20pb - 1 of integrated luminosity, thus facilitating the efficiency and rate measurement as a function of time and instantaneous luminosity. Using the ratio of the efficiency-corrected numbers of Z bosons, the precisely measured integrated luminosity of one data set is used to determine the luminosity of another. For the first time, a full quantitative uncertainty analysis of the use of Z  bosons for the integrated luminosity measurement is performed. The uncertainty in the extrapolation between two data sets, recorded in 2017 at low and high instantaneous luminosity, is less than 0.5%. We show that the Z boson rate measurement constitutes a precise method, complementary to traditional methods, with the potential to improve the measurement of the integrated luminosity.

[Analysis on passive smoking exposure in adults aged 40 years and above in China, 2019-2020]

Objective: To understand the passive smoking exposure status in adults aged ≥40 years in China. Methods: Local residents aged ≥40 years were enrolled as study subjects from 125 areas of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) surveillance during 2014-2015 and 2019-2020 in 31 provinces of China. A total of 74 559 adults aged ≥40 years were selected through multi-stage stratified cluster sampling for a face to face questionnaire survey and the data from 64 142 study subjects were used for the analysis. The passive smoking exposure rate, the proportions of the adults reporting passive smoking exposure at four types of places and the proportion of the adults living with daily smokers were described by using complicated sampling weighting method, the related factors were analyzed and the results were compared with the data of COPD surveillance during 2014-2015. Results: The passive smoking exposure rate in the adults aged ≥40 years was 46.4% (95%CI: 44.1%-48.8%) in China during 2019-2020, and the rate was higher in women (47.2%, 95%CI:44.8%-49.7%) than in men (44.8%, 95%CI:42.0%-47.6%) and lower in the older people. The office workers had the highest passive smoking exposure rate. The proportions of those reporting passive smoking exposure at homes, workplaces, restaurants, and public transports were 24.3% (95%CI:22.2%-26.4%)、23.3% (95%CI:21.1%-25.5%)、6.6% (95%CI:5.3%-7.9%) and 2.2% (95%CI:1.6%-2.7%). The higher education level the adults had, the less passive smoking exposure at home they reported. The proportions of those living with daily smokers before 14 years old and since 14 years old were 56.4% and 59.2%. Compared with the data during 2014-2015, the overall passive smoking exposure rate in the adults aged ≥40 years during 2019-2020 showed an increase, and the difference was not significant (P=0.356); The passive smoking exposure rate at homes declined, but the exposure rate at workplaces increased, with the biggest increase found in those being engaged in farming, forestry, husbandry, fishery and water conservancy. Multivariate analysis indicated that the factors influencing the passive smoking exposure and the exposure proportions at different places included gender, age, occupation, and education level. Conclusions: The passive smoking exposure rate in China is still high, especially in those being engaged in farming, forestry, husbandry, fishery and water conservancy. It is necessary to strengthen supervision of the enforcement of current smoking bans in public places and promote the legislation of ban smoking in public places. More attention should be paid to smoking ban and protection against passive smoking exposure in women, people with lower education level and people being engaged in in farming, forestry, husbandry, fishery and water conservancy.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The W + c production cross section and the cross section ratio R c ± = σ ( W + + c ¯ ) / σ ( W - + c ) are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in R c ± = 0.950 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) . The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

[Clinical characteristics and prognosis of 28 cases of infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia]

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with infant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (IALL). Methods: A retrospective cohort study.Clinical data, treatment and prognosis of 28 cases of IALL who have been treated at Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University and Baoding Children's Hospital from October 2013 to May 2023 were analyzed retrospectively. Based on the results of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), all patients were divided into KMT2A gene rearrangement (KMT2A-R) positive group and KMT2A-R negative group. The prognosis of two groups were compared. Kaplan-Meier method and Log-Rank test were used to analyze the survival of the patients. Results: Among 28 cases of IALL, there were 10 males and 18 females, with the onset age of 10.9 (9.4,11.8) months. In terms of immune classification, 25 cases were B-ALL (89%), while the remaining 3 cases were T-ALL (11%). Most infant B-ALL showed pro-B lymphocyte phenotype (16/25,64%). A total of 22 cases (79%) obtained chromosome karyotype results, of which 7 were normal karyotypes, no complex karyotypes and 15 were abnormal karyotypes were found. Among abnormal karyotypes, there were 4 cases of t (9; 11), 2 cases of t (4; 11), 2 cases of t (11; 19), 1 case of t (1; 11) and 6 cases of other abnormal karyotypes. A total of 19 cases (68%) were positive for KMT2A-R detected by FISH. The KMT2A fusion gene was detected by real-time PCR in 16 cases (57%). A total of 24 patients completed standardized induction chemotherapy and were able to undergo efficacy evaluation, 23 cases (96%) achieved complete remission through induction chemotherapy, 4 cases (17%) died of relapse. The 5-year event free survival rate (EFS) was (46±13)%, and the 5-year overall survival rate (OS) was (73±10)%.The survival time was 31.3 (3.3, 62.5) months. There was no significant statistical difference in 5-year EFS ((46±14)% vs. (61±18)%) and 5-year OS ((64±13)% vs. (86±13)%) between the KMT2A-R positive group (15 cases) and the KMT2A-R negative group (9 cases) (χ2=1.88, 1.47, P=0.170, 0.224). Conclusions: Most IALL patients were accompanied by KMT2A-R. They had poor tolerance to traditional chemotherapy, the relapse rate during treatment was high and the prognosis was poor.

[Seroprevalence of the specific antibody against Toxoplasma gondii among patients with hematological diseases]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infections among patients with hematological diseases, so as to provide insights into improving the prognosis and quality of life among patients with hematological diseases.

METHODS

A total of 240 patients with hematological diseases (including 170 patients with hematological tumors and 70 patients with non-tumor hematological diseases) admitted to The Affiliated Hospital of Putian University during the period from January 1, 2021 through October 10, 2023 and 500 healthy volunteers in the hospital during the same period were enrolled. Subjects' demographics and serum samples were collected, and serum specific IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii were detected using the chemiluminescence assay, with any of a positive IgG or IgM antibody defined as a positive T. gondii infection. The seroprevalence of specific IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii was compared between patients with hematological diseases and healthy volunteers.

RESULTS

The mean age (F = 2.034, P > 0.05) and gender distribution (χ2 = 0.462, P > 0.05) were comparable among patients with hematological tumors, patients with non-tumor hematological diseases and healthy volunteers, and there was no significant difference in the proportion of history of cat or dog contacts between patients with hematological diseases and healthy volunteers (χ2 = 0, P > 0.05). The seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody was significantly higher among patients with hematological diseases than among healthy volunteers (15.8% vs. 0.6%; χ2 = 71.902, P < 0.01), and there was a significant difference in the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody among patients with hematological tumors (18.2%), patients with non-tumor hematological diseases (10.0%) and healthy volunteers (χ2 = 78.327, P < 0.01). The seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody was significantly higher among patients with hematological tumors and non-tumor hematological diseases than among healthy volunteers (both P values < 0.05), while no significant difference was seen in the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody between patients with hematological tumors and non-tumor hematological diseases (P > 0.05). In addition, the proportion of history of cat or dog contacts was significantly higher among patients with hematological diseases that were positive for serum anti-T. gondii anti-body than among those negative for serum anti-T. gondii antibody (21.1% vs. 5.4%; χ2 = 8.653, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

There is a high seroprevalene rate of T. gondii infections among hematological diseases, which is significantly greater than that among healthy volunteers.

Size Control of On-Surface Self-Assembled Nanochains Using Soft Building Blocks

Owing to their conformational flexibility, soft molecules with side chains play a crucial role in molecular self-assembly or self-organization processes toward bottom-up building of supramolecular nanostructures. However, the influence of the rotating side chains in the confined space and subsequent surface-confined supramolecular self-assembly remains rarely explored. Herein, using the spatial confinement effect between soft building blocks, we realized size control on surface-confined supramolecular coordination self-assembly through the synergy between the repulsive steric hindrance and the attractive chemical interactions. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy with density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we elucidated the effective repulsive force generated by the thermal wiggling motions of the soft building blocks, allowing length tuning of the self-assembled chain structures. Through a delicate balance between the repulsive interaction induced by the spatial confinement effect and the coordinate chemical interaction, we provide a new strategy for controlling the geometry of the on-surface supramolecular nanostructures.

[Prevalence of exposure to household cooking oil fumes in women aged 40 years and older in China, 2019]

Objective: To understand the prevalence of exposure to household cooking oil fumes in women ≥40 years old. Methods: The data were from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Surveillance in China during 2019-2020, which selected permanent residents ≥40 years old from 125 counties (districts) in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country by multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method. The relevant demographic information and cooking oil fumes were collected by face-to-face interview. Our study served 37 164 women with complete cooking practice information as the subject. After complex sample weighting, we analyzed the prevalence of cooking oil fumes exposure in women from cooking time, kitchen characteristics, and Self-reported cooking oil fumes exposure. Results: In 2019, 83.9% (95%CI: 82.1%-85.7%) and 4.5% (95%CI: 3.8%-5.2%) of Chinese women ≥40 years old cooked daily and often, respectively. The average daily cooking duration is 1.8 hours/day, 31.1% of women who cooked daily more than 2.0 hours, and the average cumulative cooking years of cooking women were 32.8 years. 79.3% of cooking women used ventilation devices, and 3.2% cooked in the living room. 8.9% and 7.2% of cooking women in south China and northwest China cooked in the living room, significantly higher than in other regions (P=0.036). The self-reported exposure rate to cooking oil fumes was 81.0% (95%CI: 79.3%-82.7%). Rural, older, lower education level and women engaged in agriculture had a higher proportion of cooking daily, average daily cooking duration, cumulative cooking years, the proportion of cooking in the living room, and rate of self-reported cooking oil fumes exposure, but a lower proportion of using ventilation devices during cooking (P<0.001). Conclusions: The exposure to household cooking oil fumes was serious in Chinese women, and some women still did not take any ventilation measures when cooking. More attention should be paid to the exposure to home cooking oil fumes and its health hazards in women, especially those with lower socioeconomic status.

Pyroptosis-related gene signature: A predictor for overall survival, immunotherapy response, and chemosensitivity in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma

Background

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is a lethal malignancy with high levels of heterogeneity. Pyroptosis is thought to influence the development of various tumors. Nevertheless, the role of pyroptosis-related genes (PRGs) in prognostic risk stratification and therapeutic guidance for PAAD remains ambiguously.

Methods

Transcriptome profile and clinical information of PAAD patients were retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) as well as Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, followed by differential analysis. Patients were divided into distinct pyroptosis phenotype subtypes based on the characteristic of differently expressed PRGs (DEPRGs). Then a PRG signature was established through univariate analysis and LASSO algorithm in the training set to assess the prognostic risk, and its reliability was verified in the validation set using receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve. The correlation of risk score with tumor microenvironment(TME), TMB and chemotherapeutic drug sensitivity were also analyzed. In addition, a nomogram was constructed to promote better clinical application.

Results

A total of 28 DEPRGs were determined in the integrated TCGA-GEO datasets. Patients were divided into three pyroptosis phenotype subtypes, Kaplan-Meier curve suggested patients in cluster B had a worse prognosis than those in cluster A and C. Then a price signature comprised of 8 PRGs was generated. TME analysis suggested that the low-risk subgroup displayed potential stronger antitumor immune effect and might respond better to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) therapy. Furthermore, PRG signature exhibited favorable discriminatory ability for TMB status and the sensitivity of multiple conventional chemotherapeutic agents including paclitaxel. Ultimately, we constructed a promising nomogram according to the risk score and N stage with good predictive accuracy compared with the actual overall survival (OS) probabilities.

Conclusion

We established an 8-gene signature that could be regarded as an independent prognostic risk factor for PAAD patients. The 8-gene signature could provide rationale for immunotherapy and chemotherapy, which might help clinicians make precise individualized treatment regimens.

Willingness to receive and recommend hypothetical mpox vaccination and associated factors in Chinese adults: a community-based survey in Shenzhen, China

OBJECTIVES

China may face new threats to public health due to the increased risk of imported mpox (monkeypox) cases. However, research gaps exist in the acceptance of mpox vaccination and potential associated factors in the Chinese population.

STUDY DESIGN

We conducted a cross-sectional study targeting community residents in Shenzhen, China, from August 5 to September 7 2022.

METHODS

A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information about demographic and health characteristics, mpox-related perceptions, and attitudes towards mpox vaccination. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied to detect the factors associated with willingness to receive and recommend mpox vaccination.

RESULTS

A total of 2293 community residents were included in the analyses (average age: 34.03, female: 72.6%). Among the participants, 76.9% were aware of mpox, 62.1% were aware of the global mpox outbreak, but only 53.6% had a high knowledge level of mpox. Males had a higher proportion of high knowledge (56.9% vs 52.3%, P＜0.05) and a lower proportion of high worry (30.2% vs 45.4%, P＜0.05) than females. Approximately 69.1% of the participants were willing to vaccinate against mpox, and 69.6% were willing to recommend mpox vaccination to people around them, in which no gender difference was found. The obstacle reported most among people hesitant to receive vaccination was concerning the safety and side-effects, whereas it changed to be concerning the suitability due to individual health differences among people hesitant to recommend mpox vaccines. Factors associated with the willingness to receive and recommend mpox vaccination included having a history of influenza vaccination, having a history of COVID-19 vaccination, being aware of the global mpox outbreak, having a high knowledge level of mpox, and having a high level of mpox-related worry.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified a moderate willingness to receive and recommend mpox vaccination among Chinese adults. Without gender differences, willingness to receive and recommend mpox vaccination was significantly associated with mpox-related perceptions, such as awareness, knowledge, and worry. Authoritative and up-to-date information is needed to help the general population improve public confidence in mpox vaccines in China.

Impact of COPD pulmonary structural remodeling on the prognosis of patients with advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma

Background

By observing the changes of lung imaging airway structure in patients with advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma（ALUSC）, the relationship between the different types of COPD pulmonary structural remodeling and the prognosis of patients with ALUSC was analyzed.

Methods

We reviewed the medical records of 278 patients with ALUSC. The degree of emphysema and the percentage of bronchial wall thickness（WT%） on chest HRCT were calculated by Synapse3D software, Lung structural remodeling can be divided into there types: airway remodeling dominated, emphysema dominated, and mixed types.

Results

Compared with the diagnosis, the Goddard score increased, the proportion of airway remodeling dominated type decreased and the proportion of mixed type increased during the progression of ALUSC. In Kaplan-Meier analysis, whether with or without COPD, the mPFS and mOS of patients with mixed type were the shortest, and the difference was statistically significant. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that mixed type was an independent risk factor for poor PFS and OS in patients with ALUSC.

Conclusion

Patients with ALUSC all have varying degrees of lung structural remodeling, and patients with mixed lung structural remodeling have the worst prognosis. In addition, the aggravation of emphysema during tumor progression is more pronounced than the thickening of the airway wall, and the changes of emphysema was more powerful in predicting the progression of ALUSC.Clinicians must pay more attention to the changes of COPD (especially emphysema) in the process of diagnosis and treatment of ALUSC.

Decoding meningioma heterogeneity and neoplastic cell-macrophage interaction through single-cell transcriptome profiling across pathological grades

BACKGROUND

Analyzing meningioma of distinct pathological types at the single-cell level can provide new and valuable insights into the specific biological mechanisms of each cellular subpopulation, as well as their vital interplay within the tumor microenvironment.

METHODS

We recruited patients diagnosed with four distinct types of meningioma and performed single-cell RNA sequencing on their tumor samples, concurrently analyzing a publicly available dataset for comparison. Next, we separated the cells into discrete clusters and identified their unique identities. Using pseudotime analysis, we demonstrated cellular differentiation and dynamics. To investigate biological function, we employed weighted gene co-expression network analysis, gene regulatory network, and gene set enrichment analysis. Additionally, we conducted cell-cell communication analyses to characterize interactions among different clusters and validated a crucial interaction using multiple immunofluorescence staining.

RESULTS

The single-cell transcriptomic profiles for five meningioma of different pathological types demonstrated that neoplastic cells exhibited high inter-sample heterogeneity and diverse biological functions featured by metabolic regulation. A small cluster of neoplastic cells (N5 cluster, < 3%) was most proliferative, indicated by high expression of MKI67 and TOP2A. They were primarily observed in our atypical and transitional meningioma samples and located at the beginning of the pseudotime differentiation branch for neoplastic cells. Macrophages, the most abundant immune cells present, showed two distinct developmental trajectories, one promoting and the other suppressing meningioma growth, with the MIF-CD74 interaction serving as the primary signaling pathway for MIF signals in the tumor environment. Unexpectedly, despite its small cluster size, the N5 cluster demonstrated a significant contribution in this interaction. By staining pathological sections of more samples, we found that this interaction was widely present in different types of meningiomas.

CONCLUSIONS

Meningioma neoplastic cells' diverse types cause inter-sample heterogeneity and a wide range of functions. Some proliferative neoplastic cell may educate macrophages, which promotes tumorigenesis possibly through the MIF-CD74 interaction. It provides novel clues for future potential therapeutic avenues.

Measurement of the top quark mass using a profile likelihood approach with the lepton + jets final states in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The mass of the top quark is measured in 36.3fb - 1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 Te V . The measurement uses a sample of top quark pair candidate events containing one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state. For each event, the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a top quark pair hypothesis. A profile likelihood method is applied using up to four observables per event to extract the top quark mass. The top quark mass is measured to be 171.77 ± 0.37 Ge V . This approach significantly improves the precision over previous measurements.

[Chinese expert guidance on overall application of lenvatinib in hepatocellular carcinoma]

Lenvatinib mesylate is an oral receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor against targets of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors 1-3, fibroblast growth factor receptors 1-4, platelet-derived growth factor receptor α, stem cell growth factor receptor, and rearranged during transfection, et al. Lenvatinib has been approved by the National Medical Products Administration of China on September 4, 2018, for the first-line treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma who have not received systematic treatment before. Up to February 2023, Lenvatinib has been listed in China for more than 4 years, accumulating a series of post-marketing clinical research evidences. Based on the clinical practice before and after the launch of lenvatinib and referring to the clinical experience of other anti-angiogenesis inhibitors, domestic multidisciplinary experts and scholars adopt the Delphi method to formulate the Chinese Expert Guidance on Overall Application of Lenvatinib in Hepatocellular Carcinoma after repeated discussions and revisions, in order to provide reference for reasonable and effective clinical application of lenvatinib for clinicians.

A search for decays of the Higgs boson to invisible particles in events with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

A search for decays to invisible particles of Higgs bosons produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair or a vector boson, which both decay to a fully hadronic final state, has been performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 13 Te V by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The 95% confidence level upper limit set on the branching fraction of the 125Ge V Higgs boson to invisible particles, B ( H → inv ) , is 0.54 (0.39 expected), assuming standard model production cross sections. The results of this analysis are combined with previous B ( H → inv ) searches carried out at s = 7 , 8, and 13Te V in complementary production modes. The combined upper limit at 95% confidence level on B ( H → inv ) is 0.15 (0.08 expected).

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404  μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. The γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-} process is observed for τ^{+}τ^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-})=4.8±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst)  μb, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton of a_{τ}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.

Highly Efficient Luminescence from a Red Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter with Flexible Conformation of Ancillary Groups

Robust scaffolds were typically applied in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules to suppress the non-radiative decay, trigger the fast spin-flipping, and enhance the light out-coupling efficiency. Herein, we disclosed for the first time the positive effect of flexible conformation of ancillary groups on the photophysical properties of TADF emitter. The red TADF emitter Ph-TPA with flexible conformation demonstrated small excited-state structural distortion and low reorganization energy compared to the counterpart Mc-TPA with a rigid macrocycle. Consequently, Ph-TPA showed an excellent photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) of 92 % and a state-of-the-art external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 30.6 % at 630 nm. This work could deepen our understanding of structure-property relationships of organic luminophores and help us to rationalize the design of efficient TADF materials.

Dosimetric and Clinical Results of a Volumetric-Based Skin-Sparing Planning Technique for Patients Treated to the Breast and Chest Wall with Pencil Beam Scanning Proton Therapy

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Given clinical concerns for more brisk acute skin toxicity with proton compared with photon RT due to differences in the energy deposition properties, our institution implemented a novel volumetric skin-sparing planning technique (SSPT) for intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for patients treated to the breast or chest wall (CW). This study evaluates SSPT dosimetry and the hypothesis that a SSPT will reduce acute dermatitis during IMPT to the breast and CW.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Prior to the development of a consensus technique, skin dose evaluation in IMPT plans was limited to mitigation of skin hot spots and cropping off the skin surface by 3mm for CW and 5mm for intact breast targets (except indications for deliberate skin dosing). In January 2022 our center added volumetric-based skin sparing objectives in addition to hot-spot evaluation as a SSPT. A skin evaluation structure (skin-eval) was defined as a skin rind of 3 mm for CW and 5 mm for intact breast within 5mm of the CTV, bound by the patient's surface. The SSPT incorporated an objective to limit the volume of skin-eval receiving 95% of the prescription dose or more (V95%Rx) to ideally <50% (goal<60%) while still prioritizing CTV coverage and robustness. We compared target coverage, robustness, and skin-eval dosimetry as well as acute on-treatment skin toxicity in patients treated with and without incorporation of this SSPT. Patients with skin/dermal lymphatic invasion or inflammatory breast cancer were excluded.

RESULTS

84 patients who were planned to receive breast or CW IMPT were included (43 planned without and 41 with the SSPT). There was no difference in percentages of patients treated to the intact breast/CW/immediate CW reconstruction between the groups (37%/23%/40% without and 34%/27%/39% with SSPT, p>0.05). Mean skin-evalV95%Rx was 72% vs. 30%, p<0.0001, for those treated without vs. with a SSPT. Maximum %Rx to the skin volume of 0.03 cc, 0.3cc, and 1cc, was higher in patients treated without compared to those with a SSPT (103.1% vs. 101.5%; 101.3% vs. 100.4%; and 101.8% vs. 99.7% (all p=<0.0001)), respectively. There was a small statistical difference in the mean CTV V97.5%Rx in patients treated without vs. with the SSPT (97.8% vs. 96.5%, p=0.0003). Patients planned utilizing the SSPT demonstrated reduced rates of Grade 1 breast pain at Week 2 (12% vs. 33%, p=0.0424) and Grade 2 and 3 dermatitis at Week 5 (grade 2 38% vs. 42%; grade 3, 0% vs. 11%, p=0.0016). There were numerically more patients requiring a treatment break or not completing full intended prescription (4 vs. 1) in the pre-SSPT cohort.

CONCLUSION

A volumetric-based SSPT appears to reduce the frequency of brisk onset dermatitis and near-end of RT significant dermatitis while still maintaining acceptable target coverage and robustness in patients receiving IMPT to the breast and CW.

Measurement of the Dependence of the Hadron Production Fraction Ratios f_{s}/f_{u} and f_{d}/f_{u} on B Meson Kinematic Variables in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The dependence of the ratio between the B_{s}^{0} and B^{+} hadron production fractions, f_{s}/f_{u}, on the transverse momentum (p_{T}) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ and B^{+}→J/ψK^{+}. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6  fb^{-1}. The f_{s}/f_{u} ratio is observed to depend on the B p_{T} and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p_{T}. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B^{0} to B^{+} meson production fractions, f_{d}/f_{u}, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B^{0}→J/ψK^{*0} decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p_{T} and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

A Layered Genetic Design Enables the Yeast Galactose Regulon to Respond to Cyanamide

The commonly used expression systems in Saccharomyces cerevisiae typically rely on either constitutive or galactose-regulated promoters. The lack of inducible systems in S. cerevisiae limits the precise temporal regulation of protein function and yeast metabolism. We herein repurposed the galactose-regulated system to make it respond to cyanamide. By using a cyanamide-inducible DDI2 promoter to control Gal4 expression in CEN.PK2-1C with Δgal80, a tight and graded cyanamide-inducible GAL system with an enhanced signal output was constructed. Subsequently, we demonstrated that the cyanamide-inducible GAL system was capable of tightly regulating the pentafunctional Aro1 protein to achieve conditional shikimate pathway activity. Taken together, the cyanamide-inducible GAL system could be implemented for both fundamental research and applied biotechnology.

Search for Exotic Higgs Boson Decays H→AA→4γ with Events Containing Two Merged Diphotons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H→AA, A→γγ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle A is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt[s]=13  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136  fb^{-1}. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→AA→4γ) of (0.9-3.3)×10^{-3} at 95% confidence level for masses of A in the range 0.1-1.2 GeV.

Observation of Same-Sign WW Production from Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first observation of the production of W^{±}W^{±} bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7±11.2(stat) _{-8.6}^{+9.5}(syst)±12.1(model)  fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28±0.81(stat)±0.69(syst)±0.37(model)  fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Observation of the Rare Decay of the η Meson to Four Muons

A search for the rare η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} double-Dalitz decay is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with high-rate muon triggers during 2017 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101  fb^{-1}. A signal having a statistical significance well in excess of 5 standard deviations is observed. Using the η→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay as normalization, the branching fraction B(η→μ^{+}μ^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-})=[5.0±0.8(stat)±0.7(syst)±0.7(B_{2μ})]×10^{-9} is measured, where the last term is the uncertainty in the normalization channel branching fraction. This work achieves an improved precision of over 5 orders of magnitude compared to previous results, leading to the first measurement of this branching fraction, which is found to agree with theoretical predictions.

Search for Higgs Boson Decay to a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→cc[over ¯], produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z→cc[over ¯] in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(VH)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is 0.94 (0.50_{-0.15}^{+0.22})pb at 95% confidence level (C.L.), corresponding to 14 (7.6_{-2.3}^{+3.4}) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κ_{c}, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. interval is 1.1<|κ_{c}|<5.5 (|κ_{c}|<3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

UniProt and Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics-A 2-Way Working Relationship

The human proteome comprises of all of the proteins produced by the sequences translated from the human genome with additional modifications in both sequence and function caused by nonsynonymous variants and posttranslational modifications including cleavage of the initial transcript into smaller peptides and polypeptides. The UniProtKB database (www.uniprot.org) is the world's leading high-quality, comprehensive and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information and presents a summary of experimentally verified, or computationally predicted, functional information added by our expert biocuration team for each protein in the proteome. Researchers in the field of mass spectrometry-based proteomics both consume and add to the body of data available in UniProtKB, and this review highlights the information we provide to this community and the knowledge we in turn obtain from groups via deposition of large-scale datasets in public domain databases.

Search for Nonresonant Pair Production of Highly Energetic Higgs Bosons Decaying to Bottom Quarks

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson (H) pair production via gluon and vector boson (V) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138  fb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the H self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, κ_{2V}, excluding κ_{2V}=0 for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings are fixed to their standard model values.

Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of Z Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) produced with transverse momentum (p_{T}) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark (cc[over ¯]) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Boosted H→cc[over ¯] decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the Z→cc[over ¯] decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high p_{T} for the first time with a signal strength of 1.00_{-0.14}^{+0.17}(syst)±0.08(theo)±0.06(stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(H)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95% confidence level.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section and couplings in the W boson pair decay channel in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016-2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The signal strength modifier μ , defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be μ = 0 . 95 - 0.09 + 0.10 . All results are found to be compatible with the standard model within the uncertainties.

Probing Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and the Weinberg Operator through Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 GeV-25 TeV; for masses above 650 GeV these are the most stringent constraints from searches at the LHC to date. A first test of the Weinberg operator at colliders provides an observed upper limit at 95% confidence level on the effective μμ Majorana neutrino mass of 10.8 GeV.

Measurement of the differential tt¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass and extraction of the top quark mass in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks

A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production (t t ¯ ) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400Ge V . The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . The differential t t ¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of 173.06 ± 0.84 Ge V .

GPRC5B protects osteoarthritis by regulation of autophagy signaling

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. However, current treatment modalities mainly relieve pain and inhibit cartilage degradation, but do not promote cartilage regeneration. In this study, we show that G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member B (GPRC5B), an orphan G-protein-couple receptor, not only inhibits cartilage degradation, but also increases cartilage regeneration and thereby is protective against OA. We observed that Gprc5b deficient chondrocytes had an upregulation of cartilage catabolic gene expression, along with downregulation of anabolic genes in vitro. Furthermore, mice deficient in Gprc5b displayed a more severe OA phenotype in the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) induced OA mouse model, with upregulation of cartilage catabolic factors and downregulation of anabolic factors, consistent with our in vitro findings. Overexpression of Gprc5b by lentiviral vectors alleviated the cartilage degeneration in DMM-induced OA mouse model by inhibiting cartilage degradation and promoting regeneration. We also assessed the molecular mechanisms downstream of Gprc5b that may mediate these observed effects and identify the role of protein kinase B (AKT)-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-autophagy signaling pathway. Thus, we demonstrate an integral role of GPRC5B in OA pathogenesis, and activation of GPRC5B has the potential in preventing the progression of OA.

Does joint-sparing tumor resection jeopardize oncologic and functional outcomes in non-metastatic high-grade osteosarcoma around the knee?

BACKGROUND

We previously reported joint-sparing tumor resection for osteosarcoma with epiphyseal involvement in which transepiphyseal osteotomy went through the in situ ablated epiphysis. However, we do not know whether this is a safe approach when compared with joint-sacrificed tumor resection. Our objective was to compare oncologic and functional outcomes between patients who underwent joint preservation (JP) and joint replacement (JR) tumor resection. Furthermore, we identified the risk factors of local recurrence, metastasis and survival.

METHODS

Eighty-nine patients with non-metastatic high-grade osteosarcoma around the knee were treated with limb-salvage surgery (JP in 47 and JR in 42). Age, gender, tumor location, pathologic fracture, plain radiographic pattern, limb diameter change, perivascular space alteration, surgical margin, local recurrence, metastasis, death, and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS)-93 scores were extracted from the records. Univariate analysis was performed to compare oncologic and functional outcomes. Binary logistic and cox regression models were used to identify predicted factors for local recurrence, metastasis, and survival.

RESULTS

Local recurrence, metastasis and overall survival were similar in the JP and JR group (p = 0.3; p = 0.211; p = 0.143). Major complications and limb survival were also similar in the JR and JP group (p = 0.14; p = 0.181). The MSTS score of 27.06 ± 1.77 in the JP group was higher than that of 25.88 ± 1.79 in the JR group (p = 0.005). The marginal margin of soft tissue compared with a wide margin was the only independent predictor of local recurrence (p = 0.006). Limb diameter increase and perivascular fat plane disappearance during neoadjuvant chemotherapy were independent predictors for metastasis (p = 0.002; p = 0.000) and worse survival (p = 0.000; p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Joint-sparing tumor resection with the ablative bone margin offers advantage of native joint preservation with favorable functional outcomes while not jeopardizing oncologic outcomes compared with joint-sacrificed tumor resection. Surgeon should strive to obtain adequate soft tissue surgical margin decreasing risk of local recurrence. Novel drug regimens might be reasonable options for patients with obvious limb diameter increase and perivascular fat disappearance during chemotherapy.
