Abstract
Supplementation of beef cattle can be used to meet both nutrient requirements and production goals; however, supplementation costs influence farm profitability. Common supplementation delivery strategies are generally designed to provide nutrients to the mean of the group instead of an individual. Precision individual supplementation technologies, such as the Super SmartFeed (SSF, C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, SD, USA), are available but are generally cost prohibitive to producers. These systems require adaptation or training periods for cattle to utilize this technology. The objective of this research was to assess the training and adoption rates of three different groups of cattle (suckling calves, weaned steers, replacement heifers) to the SSF. Successful adaptation was determined if an individual's supplement intake was above the group average of total allotted feed consumed throughout the training period. Suckling calves (n = 31) underwent a 12 d training period on pasture; 45% of suckling calves adapted to the SSF and average daily intake differed (p < 0.0001) by day of training. Weaned steers (n = 79) were trained in drylot for 13 d. Of the weaned steers, 62% were trained to the SSF, and average daily intake differed (p < 0.0001) by day of training. Replacement heifers (n = 63) grazed tall fescue pastures and had access to SSF for 22 d of training. The success rate of replacement heifers was 73%. For replacement heifers, the daily intake did not differ (p < 0.0001) by day of training. Results indicate production stage may influence cattle adaptation to precision technologies.

Backgrounding or stocker operations attempt to add value to calves by efficiently adding weight and predominately taking advantage of the protein accretion phase of development, ultimately preparing calves for later stages of production. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of an implant (Revalor-G) or implant plus supplementation on protein accretion patterns in backgrounded beef steers. A 56-day backgrounding study was conducted using Angus-based steers (n = 69; initial BW 233 ± 29 kg) grazing a cow pea and millet mixture. Steers were randomly assigned to one of three treatments (n = 23 steers per treatment): 1) grazing only (G), 2) grazing with implant (GI), or 3) grazing with implant plus individual animal supplementation via Super Smart Feeder at 0.75% BW (GIS). Steers were weighed and blood was collected every 14 days to determine plasma blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine concentrations. Ultrasound measurements of ribeye area and backfat were collected at days 0, 28, and 56 of study. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX function of SAS version 9.4. GIS steers had a greater (P ≤ 0.0004) body weight change than GI or G steers. GI and GIS steers had a greater (P ≤ 0.0117) ribeye area compared with G steers. GI steers had a greater (P < 0.0180) ribeye area to body weight ratio than G steers. When evaluating blood parameters, GI steers had a greater (P< 0.0009) plasma BUN concentration than GIS steers. No treatment differences were observed for plasma creatinine concentrations. G and GI steers had a greater (P ≤ 0.0290) BUN to creatinine ratio than GIS steers. Results of this study suggest that implanted steers may require additional supplementation to optimize growth and muscle accretion.

Consumption of ergot alkaloids during the second half of gestation have been shown to decrease umbilical artery vasoactivity resulting in lighter birth weights. The objective was to evaluate vasoactivity of serotonin (5HT) receptors 5HT2A and 5HT1B/1D in umbilical artery and vein from ewes receiving endophyte-infected (E+ 1.77 mg ergovaline/animal/day) or endophyte-free (E-; 0 mg ergovaline/animal/day) tall fescue seed at d-85 (n=4), 110 (n=4 E+; n=4 E-), 135 (n =4 E+; n=4 E-) of gestation. Suffolk ewes began receiving seed treatments on d-86 of gestation. Umbilical artery and vein were collected from ewes at slaughter. Two-mm blood vessel cross sections were mounted in multi-myographs containing Krebs-Henseleit buffer and exposed to increasing concentrations of rizatriptan benzoate (5HT1B/1D agonist) and TCB-2 (5HT2A agonist). Data were analyzed as a split-plot with mixed models of SAS. The 5HT1B/1D agonist did not stimulate a contractile response in either vessel for any gestation time point evaluated. The 5HT2A agonist caused contractile responses in umbilical artery with the greatest occurring at d-85 and decreasing in magnitude as days of gestation increased (P< 0.05). On d-110 and 133 of gestation, umbilical arteries from ewes receiving E- seed had a greater contractile response than those arteries collected from ewes receiving the E+ treatment (P< 0.05). Umbilical veins also responded to increasing concentrations of 5HT2A agonist and maximal response was not different between d-85 and 110 of gestation, but both were greater than d-133. Unlike the artery, umbilical veins from ewes receiving E+ seed had greater contractile response than E- at d-133 (P< 0.05). These results demonstrate that ovine vascular smooth muscle contractions of the umbilical artery and vein are induced by 5HT2A receptor activity and not 5HT1B/1D. Umbilical artery 5HT2A receptor activity responded to seed treatment differently than umbilical vein and could be the source of ergot alkaloid-induced intra-uterine growth restriction.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate use of the Super SmartFeeder (SSF; C-Lock, Inc.) for individual versus group supplementation of heifers grazing stockpiled, novel tall fescue. In experiment 1, Angus heifers (n = 64; 267 + 31.7 kg) had access to the SSF and were allowed 3.6 kg/d of grower supplement. Individual intake was recorded daily and analyzed to determine adoption. Twenty-four percent of the heifers did not adopt to individual SSF supplementation (P < 0.05). In experiment 2, heifers (n = 64; BW= 275 + 31.3 kg) were allotted, based on adoption to SSF, to supplementation system of group feeding (n = 2 reps/level; GRP) or SSF precision feeding (n =16/level; PRE) at two levels (0.5% or 1% of BW) for 127-d in a 2 x 2 factorial. Data were analyzed using Mixed procedure. The interaction between supplementation level and feeding system tended to be significant (P = 0.10) for overall ADG. Average daily gain was greater for 1% BW than 0.5% BW (0.81 vs. 0.47 kg/d) for PRE but did not differ for GRP (0.69 kg/d). Daily supplement dry matter intake differed (P < 0.05) by supplementation level and total BW gain was greater (P < 0.05) by 24.3 kg for 1% versus 0.5% supplementation level. Ultrasound ribeye area and fat thickness measures were greater (P < 0.05) for 1% BW supplement compared to 0.5% BW at the end of the 127d study. When PRE was analyzed independently, heifer BW differed (P < 0.05) on d 91, 117 and 127 between supplement levels. The correlation between individual heifer daily supplement intake and overall ADG for PRE was 0.68 (P < 0.0001). The use of technology to precisely control intake in a grazing system created greater divergence in growth by supplementation level compared to group feeding systems.

Weaned lambs (n = 82), born to ewes fed endophyte-free (E-) or endophyte-infected (E+; 1.77 mg hd-1 d-1 ergovaline + ergovalinine) tall fescue seed from d 35 to 85 of gestation (MID) and/or d 86 of gestation to parturition (LATE), were used to examine how ergot alkaloid exposure during fetal development altered subsequent puberty attainment or carcass quality. Lambs were weaned at 75 d of age and separated by sex to assess puberty in ewe lambs (n = 39) and to evaluate growth, carcass and meat quality in wethers (n = 43). Data were analyzed with maternal fescue treatment, stage of gestation, and two-way interaction in the model. Age at puberty tended (P = 0.06) to be longer for ewe lambs born to dams fed E+ fescue during LATE gestation versus those fed E-. Post-weaning average daily gain tended to be higher (P = 0.07) for wether lambs born to dams fed E+ fescue seed during MID gestation compared to E-. Exposure to ergot alkaloids during fetal growth altered (P < 0.10) longissimus muscle weight and color, lipid deposition, fatty acid composition, and shear force values of semimembranosus muscle in wether lambs. These results indicate that exposure to ergot alkaloids in utero does alter subsequent post-weaning puberty attainment and body composition in offspring.

Abstract
The Alliance for Grassland Renewal (the Alliance) is a collaborative multi-state effort to enhance the understanding of fescue toxicosis and the adoption of Novel Endophyte Tall Fescue (NETF). The Alliance includes academic institutions, companies marketing NETF, allied companies, governmental agencies, and non-profits. The Alliance initially focused on the state of Missouri. After 2014, it expanded efforts with one-day workshops in MO, KY, OK, KS and UKY joined the board in 2017. In 2018, Clemson and NCSU joined the board, and workshops were expanded to the east coast, with five workshops in MO, KY, SC, NC and VA. In 2019, workshops will repeated in those states in addition GA. Key presentations included managing fescue toxicosis, establishment and first year management, second year management, and economics of conversion. Additionally the agenda included microscope viewing of the endophyte, quality control and endophyte testing, industry update, drill calibration, producer panel, and a tour of NETF plots. There were 214 paid attendees in 2018 (locations ranged 26 to 59; 75% farmers), and 146 evaluations were submitted. Attendees owned 9592 beef or dairy cows, 1997 stocker cattle, 121 horses, 545 sheep and goats, and 151 alpacas. Thirty percent of the audience had planted NETF in the past, while 55% intended to plant NETF in the future. Reasons given for not planting included: unclear cost/benefit (9%), limited financial resources (4%), lack of knowledge (5%), rented or unsuitable land (15%) and forage reserves lacking (5%). Registration fee was $60, and 45% of the audience said they would have paid $95, suggesting the registration fee was appropriate. The Alliance is a growing and successful partnership between academic institutions and industry. This approach is a model that could be applied to adoption of other new technologies.

Abstract
Tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Scheyreb.) Darbysh] is the primary cool season forage grass in the Southeastern United States. Most tall fescue contains an endophytic fungus (Epichloë coenophiala) that produces ergot alkaloids and upon ingestion induces fescue toxicosis. The objective of this study was to assess how exposure to endophyte-infected (E+; 1.77 mg hd-1 d-1 ergovaline and ergovalinine) or endophyte-free (E-; 0 mg hd-1 d-1 ergovaline and ergovalinine) tall fescue seed fed during 2 stages of gestation (MID, days 35-85/LATE, days 86-133) alters placental development. Thirty-six, fescue naïve Suffolk ewes were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 fescue treatments: E-/E-, E-/E+, E+/E-, or E+/E+. Ewes were individually fed the same amount of E+ or E- seed mixed into total mixed ration during MID and LATE gestation. Terminal surgeries were conducted on day 133 of gestation. Ewes fed E+ fescue seed had elevated (P < 0.001) ergot alkaloid excretion and reduced (P < 0.001) prolactin levels during the periods when fed E+ seed. Ewes switched on day 86 from E- to E+ seed had a 4% reduction (P = 0.005) in DMI during LATE gestation, which translated to a 2% reduction (P = 0.07) in DMI overall. Average daily gain was also reduced (P = 0.049) by 64% for E-/E+ ewes during LATE gestation and tended to be reduced (P = 0.06) by 33% overall. Ewes fed E+ seed during LATE gestation exhibited a 14% and 23% reduction in uterine (P = 0.03) and placentome (P = 0.004) weights, respectively. Caruncle weights were also reduced by 28% (P = 0.003) for E-/E+ ewes compared with E-/E- and E+/E-. Ewes fed E+ seed during both MID and LATE gestation exhibited a 32% reduction in cotyledon (P = 0.01) weights, whereas ewes fed E+ seed only during MID gestation (E+/E-) had improved (P = 0.01) cotyledon weights. The percentage of type A placentomes tended to be greater (P = 0.08) for E+/E+ ewes compared with other treatments. Other placentome types (B, C, or D) did not differ (P > 0.05). Total fetal weight per ewe was reduced (P = 0.01) for ewes fed E+ seed during LATE gestation compared with E-; however, feeding E+ seed during MID gestation did not alter (P = 0.70) total fetal weight per ewe. These results suggest that exposure to ergot alkaloids during LATE (days 86-133) gestation has the greatest impact on placental development by reducing uterine and placentome weights. This, in turn, reduced total fetal weight per ewe by 15% in ewes fed E+ seed during LATE gestation (E-/E+ and E+/E+).

Abstract
Previous research has shown that livestock exposed to ergot alkaloids results in decreased vasoactivity of gastrointestinal and peripheral vasculature. Little is known regarding the effect ergot alkaloid exposure during gestation may have on vasculature supporting the fetus. The objective of this study was to evaluate contractile responses of uterine and umbilical arteries collected from ewes consuming ergot alkaloids during gestation. On day 35 of gestation, 36 Suffolk ewes (78.24 ± 9.5 kg) were assigned to endophyte-infected (E+) or endophyte-free (E-) tall fescue seed treatments that were fed either throughout or switched on day 86 of gestation, creating four seed treatments E+E+, E+E-, E-E+, and E-E-. Ewes were fed E+ tall fescue seed to provide 1.77 mg of total ergovaline ⋅ hd-1 ⋅ d-1 with E- ewes receiving the same quantity of E- seed. Gestation was terminated on day 133, and sections of uterine artery and umbilical cord were surgically collected. Only collections from 28 ewes (n = 7/treatment) were of sufficient viability to proceed with the contractility experiments. Arteries were cleaned, sliced into 2-mm cross sections, and suspended in multi-myograph chambers containing 5 mL of continuously oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit buffer. Vessels were exposed to increasing concentrations (5 × 10-8 to 1 × 10-4 M) of norepinephrine, serotonin, ergotamine, and ergovaline (5 × 10-9 to 1 × 10-5M; extract of tall fescue seed) in 15-min intervals. Increasing concentrations of norepinephrine generated a contractile response by the uterine artery (P < 0.05), but no response in the umbilical artery. Increasing concentrations of serotonin resulted in negligible responses in uterine preparations, whereas umbilical artery preparations were responsive (P < 0.05) to serotonin. Ewes receiving E+E+ and E-E+ treatments had decreased vasoactivity in umbilical arteries to serotonin with a dextral shift in concentrations where the response curve initiated (P < 0.05). Interestingly, uterine arteries were not responsive to exposure to ergotamine or ergovaline, whereas umbilical arteries were responsive (P < 0.05). Umbilical arteries collected from ewes receiving E-E- and E+E- were more vasoactive to ergot alkaloids (P < 0.05) than other treatments. These findings indicate that maternal blood supply to the placenta appears protected from negative effects of ergot alkaloids; however, umbilical vasculature is not, and this could adversely influence fetal growth.

Angus-cross steers (n = 20; 261 ± 21.5 kg BW) were used to examine how early exposure to high concentrates or high quality forages altered marbling deposition and lipid metabolism. Steers were randomly assigned to high concentrate diet (CONC) or high quality forages (FOR) at 30-d postweaning, fed for 127 d, and slaughtered. Data were analyzed using a mixed model that included fixed effect(s) of dietary treatment (CONC vs. FOR), time (for plasma levels, ultrasound measures, and postmortem aging time) and two-way interaction (when appropriate). Steers fed CONC had greater (P < 0.01) ADG and heavier (P < 0.001) body weight at 127 d. Ultrasound measures over time showed greater (P < 0.001) intramuscular fat deposition at d 98 and 126 for CONC than FOR steers. Steers fed CONC had elevated (P < 0.05) plasma glucose and insulin concentrations from d 57 to 127 compared to FOR. Early exposure to CONC increased (P < 0.01) dressing percent, HCW, LM area, 12th rib fat thickness, and marbling scores compared to FOR. Total lipid content of the LM was greater (P < 0.01) for CONC than FOR; however, moisture, protein, and ash content was lower (P < 0.01) for CONC than FOR. Concentrate fed steers had greater (P < 0.01) MUFA content and lower (P < 0.01) polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA n-3 content than FOR. The n-6:n-3 ratio was greater (P < 0.01) for CONC due to decreased (P < 0.01) in n-3 fatty acid content with CONC. Gene expression was up-regulated (P < 0.05) for key lipogenic genes and downregulated for glucose transporter 4 in steers fed CONC vs. FOR. Early exposure to CONC diets for 127 d at 30 d postweaning stimulated marbling deposition and resulted in these carcasses grading 80% Choice when slaughtered at 13 mo of age and 248 kg HCW.

Abstract
Forty Angus-cross steers (280 ± 21.4 kg BW, 8 mo.) were used to examine the effects of exposure to 2 diets [high concentrate diets (CONC) versus high quality forages (FOR)] during 2 time periods [early (EARLY; at 30-d post weaning) or late (LATE; just prior to slaughter)] on animal growth, marbling deposition and tenderness. Steers were blocked by weight and randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: 1) CONC-FOR, 2) CONC-CONC, 3) FOR-CONC, or 4) FOR-FOR. Exposure to CONC during the EARLY or LATE period increased (P < 0.05) growth and fat deposition compared to FOR-FOR. Hot carcass weight was greater (P < 0.05) for CONC-CONC and FOR-CONC steers than FOR-FOR and CONC-FOR due to changes in dressing percent. Marbling score was greater (P < 0.05) for CONC-CONC and CONC-FOR compared to FOR-FOR. Exposure to CONC during the EARLY period (CONC-FOR and CONC-CONC) increased (P < 0.05) n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) deposition in longissimus muscle (LM) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SQ); whereas, exposure to CONC during the LATE period (CONC-CONC and FOR-CONC) reduced (P < 0.05) n-3 PUFA, trans-11 octadecenoic acid and cis-9 trans-11 isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Warner-Bratzler shear force at d 2 and 7 of postmortem aging in ribeye steaks from CONC-CONC and FOR-CONC was greater (P < 0.05) than FOR-FOR and CONC-FOR. Lipogenic gene expression was up-regulated (P < 0.05) and lipolytic gene expression was downregulated (P < 0.06) in SQ from CONC-CONC and FOR-CONC compared to FOR-FOR. Overall, exposure to CONC in both periods increased growth rate and marbling deposition but LATE exposure had the greatest impact on adipose lipogenesis and lipolysis, fatty acid composition, and tenderness.

Abstract
The predominant cool-season forage in the southeastern United States is the tall fescue cultivar Kentucky 31 (KY31). Kentucky 31 possesses an endophyte (), which produces a family of toxins called ergot alkaloids. These toxins negatively affect the physiology of animals on consumption and result in the syndrome known as fescue toxicosis. Currently, the United States annually produces approximately 11.4 billion kg of beef, of which 25% originates in the southeastern region of the United States where forage systems frequently are tall fescue based. Cattle within this forage system exhibit reduced gains and reproductive performance. The result is a reduction in the nation's beef supply with annual revenue losses recently estimated at approximately US$1 billion. Our hypothesis is that exposure to these ergot alkaloids in conjunction with limited availability of nutrients decreases bull semen quality and fertility. Although the literature is clear that these toxins affect BW, body temperature, blood flow, hair growth, and female reproduction in cattle, their effect on bull reproduction and the mechanisms through which the toxins act are not well defined. Six studies published from 2004 to 2015 assessed bull growth, body composition, and semen quality of young beef bulls exposed to ergot alkaloids. If semen quality or fertility is altered, the mechanisms involved may be either direct effects of ergot alkaloids through neurotransmitter receptors or indirect effects such as inhibiting the release of prolactin (PRL). The possible effects of ergot alkaloids or PRL require establishing the presence or absence of dopamine, adrenergic, serotonin, or PRL receptors in the testis, epididymis, and sperm cell of the bull. The objective of this review is to relate our findings to the few previous studies conducted that evaluated the impact of fescue toxicosis on bull reproduction and to propose possible mechanisms of action for lowered semen quality.

Abstract
Tall fescue [Schedonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub] accounts for nearly 16 million hectares of pasture in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S. due to its heat, drought, and pest resistance, conferred to the plant by its symbiotic relationship with the endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum. The endophyte produces ergot alkaloids that have negative effects on the growth and reproduction of animals, resulting in the syndrome known as fescue toxicosis. The objectives of our study were to identify microRNA (miRNA) present in bovine sperm and to evaluate the effects of fescue toxicosis on sperm miRNA expression. Angus bulls were assigned to treatments of either toxic or non-toxic fescue seed diets. Semen was collected and subjected to RNA isolation. Three samples from each treatment group were chosen and pooled for deep sequencing. To compare miRNA expression between treatment groups, a microarray was designed and conducted. For each of the top ten expressed miRNA, target prediction analysis was conducted using TargetScan. Gene ontology enrichment was assessed using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. Sequencing results elucidated the presence of 1,582 unique small RNA present in sperm. Of those sequences, 382 were known Bos taurus miRNA, 22 were known but novel to Bos taurus, and 816 were predicted candidate miRNA that did not map to any currently reported miRNA. Of the sequences chosen for microarray, twenty-two showed significant differential expression between treatment groups. Gene pathways of interest included: regulation of transcription, embryonic development (including blastocyst formation), Wnt and Hedgehog signaling, oocyte meiosis, and kinase and phosphatase activity. MicroRNA present in mature sperm appears to not only be left over from spermatogenic processes, but may actually serve important regulatory roles in fertilization and early developmental processes. Further, our results indicate the possibility that environmental changes may impact the expression of specific miRNA.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the presence and expression levels of bovine prolactin receptor (PRLR) and prolactin-inducible protein (PIP) in bovine testis and epididymis, and (2) the presence and concentrations of prolactin (PRL) present in seminiferous fluid in bulls consuming diets with (E+) or without (E-) ergot alkaloids. Bulls (n = 8) were sacrificed after 126 days (group A) of E+ or E- treatment or 60 days after all bulls (n = 6) were switched to the E- ration (group B). End point and real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry were conducted on testis and epididymis samples to establish the presence and relative expression of PRLR and PIP. Seminal fluid samples obtained from bulls consuming E- and E+ diets were subjected to RIA for PRL. Both PIP and PRLR were present in testis and epididymis as determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Prolactin-inducible protein mRNA abundance was affected by time of slaughter in testis and epididymis head, respectively (P < 0.05). Prolactin receptor mRNA expression was affected by time of slaughter in the epididymis (P < 0.05) and differed in testis samples because of treatment (P < 0.05). Radioimmunoassay establishes the presence of PRL in seminal fluid; however, differences in the concentration of PRL over two separate studies were inconsistent, possibly because of differences in diet. The presence and localization of the PRLR are consistent with expression data reported for other species, and the presence of PIP and PRL in seminal fluid is consistent with data generated in humans.

Abstract
Tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh; Schedonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub] is the primary cool season perennial grass in the eastern U.S. Most tall fescue contains an endophyte (Neotyphodium coenophialum), which produces ergot alkaloids that cause vasoconstriction and could restrict blood flow to the fetus in pregnant animals. The objective of this study was to examine fetal growth during maternal exposure to ergot alkaloids during gestation. Pregnant ewes (n = 16) were randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments: (1) endophyte-infected (N. coenophialum) tall fescue seed (E+; 0.8 ug of ergovaline /g diet DM) and (2) endophyte-free tall fescue seed (E−; 0.0 ug of ergovaline/g diet DM). Birth weight of lambs was reduced by 37% for E+ compared to E−. Organ and muscle weights were also lighter for E+ than E−. Exposure to ergot alkaloids in utero reduces fetal growth and muscle development.

Abstract
Cattle use of riparian areas may lead to stream water contamination with nutrients, pathogens, and sediments. Providing alternative water away from the stream may reduce the amount of time cattle spend near streams and therefore reduce contamination. We conducted this study to 1) evaluate the effect of providing water troughs outside of the riparian zones on the amount of time cattle spend in riparian zones, and 2) evaluate if environmental factors such as temperature and humidity affect the impact of water trough availability on the amount of time cattle spend within riparian and nonriparian locations. Global positioning system (GPS) collars were used to document cow locations every 5 min in 2 mixed tall fescue/common bermuda-grass pastures of the Georgia Piedmont in the United States. We found that when the temperature and humidity index (THI) ranged between 62 and 72, providing cattle with water troughs outside of riparian zones tended to decrease time cattle spent in riparian zones by 63% (52 min x d(-1); P = 0.11). When THI ranged between 72 and 84, nonriparian water availability did not have a significant impact on the amount of time cattle spent in the riparian zone or in riparian shade. These results suggest that water troughs placed away from unfenced streams may improve water quality by reducing the amount of time cattle spend in riparian zones when environmental conditions as evaluated by THI are not stressful.

Abstract
Cow and calf performance was determined in a 2-yr, 2 x 2 factorial, grazing experiment using Coastal or Tifton 85 (T85) replicated Bermudagrass pastures (4 pastures each; each pasture 4.86 ha), without or with aeschynomene creep-grazing paddocks (n = 4, 0.202 ha each, planted in May of each year, 13.44 kg/ha). On June 10, 2004, and June 8, 2005, 96 winter-calving beef "tester" cows and their calves were grouped by cow breed (9 Angus and 3 Polled Hereford/group), initial cow BW (592.9 +/- 70.1 kg, 2-yr mean), age of dam, calf breed (Angus, Polled Hereford, or Angus x Polled Hereford), calf sex, initial calf age (117 +/- 20.1 d, 2-yr mean), and initial calf BW (161.3 +/- 30.4 kg) and were randomly assigned to pastures. Additional cow-calf pairs and open cows were added as the forage increased during the season. Forage mass was similar for all treatment pastures (P > 0.70; 2-yr mean, 6,939 vs. 6,628 kg/ha, Coastal vs. T85; 6,664 vs. 6,896 kg/ha, no creep grazing vs. creep grazing). Main effect interactions did not occur for performance variables (P > 0.10; 2-yr means), and year affected only the initial and final BW of the calves and cows. The 91-d tester calf ADG was greater for calves grazing T85 than Coastal (0.94 vs. 0.79 kg; P < 0.01), and for calves creep grazing aeschynomene compared with calves without creep grazing (0.90 vs. 0.82 kg; P < 0.03). Calf 205-d adjusted weaning weights were increased for calves grazing T85 compared with Coastal (252.9 vs. 240.3 kg; P < 0.01) and for calves with access to creep grazing (249.9 vs. 243.3 kg; P < 0.05). The IVDMD of esophageal masticate from pastures had a forage x creep grazing interaction (P < 0.05; Coastal, no creep grazing = 57.4%; Coastal, creep grazing = 52.1%; T85, no creep grazing = 59.1%; T85, creep grazing = 60.0%), and IVDMD was greater (P < 0.05) for T85 than for Coastal pastures. Cows were milked in August 2004, and in June and August 2005, with variable milk yields on treatments, but increased milk protein (P < 0.05) for cows grazing T85 compared with Coastal pastures in August each year, contributing to increased calf gains on T85 pastures. These results complement previous research with T85 and indicate increased forage quality and performance of cattle grazing T85 pastures. Calf gains on T85 pastures and for calves on creep-grazed aeschynomene paddocks were high enough to influence the efficiency of cow-calf operations.

Abstract
Eighteen Angus steers (438 +/- 4 kg of BW) were supplemented with varying levels of corn oil (0 g/kg of BW, none; 0.75 g/kg of BW, MED; or 1.5 g/kg of BW, HI) on rotationally stocked, endophyte-free tall fescue to determine the effect of supplemental oil level on in vivo digestibility, intake, performance, and carcass traits. Pelleted cottonseed hulls were used as a carrier for the oil supplements, and all supplements were offered to steers using Calan gate feeders for individual intake determination. On d 49, each steer was dosed with a controlled-release capsule containing chromium sesquioxide, and fecal samples were obtained 12 d later over a 7-d period to estimate fecal output that, with forage, supplement, and fecal indigestible NDF concentration, was used to estimate DMI and in vivo total diet digestibility. Steers were slaughtered at the end of the 116-d grazing period, and carcass data were collected at 24 h postmortem. Total fatty acid intake linearly increased with corn oil supplementation, and forage DMI, total DMI, and total DE intake were linearly decreased (P < 0.01). The decrease in total DMI was reflected in forage substitution rates greater (P < or = 0.01) than 1, with a trend (P = 0.09) for a greater substitution rate in HI than in MED. In vivo DM, OM, and NDF digestibility were linearly decreased (P < 0.01) by corn oil supplementation. Average daily gain and final BW tended (P = 0.09) to increase linearly in response to oil level. Oil conversion (0.36 kg of BW gain/kg of corn oil) was greater (P < or = 0.05) than zero and did not differ (P = 0.15) between MED and HI. Dressing percent (P = 0.09), carcass weight (P = 0.01), and carcass backfat thickness (P = 0.01) increased linearly with oil supplementation. No treatment effect was observed for carcass LM area, KPH percentage, marbling score, or yield grade (P > 0.10). Oil supplementation to grazing steers linearly reduced forage DMI intake; however, animal performance was maintained and tended to be greater for oil-supplemented cattle. Oil supplementation increased carcass fat thickness and weight without altering other carcass quality parameters.

Abstract
Contamination of unfenced streams with P, sediments, and pathogenic bacteria from cattle (Bos taurus) activity may be affected by the availability of shade and alternative water sources. The objectives of this study were to evaluate water quality in two streams draining tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)-common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) pastures with different shade distribution, and to quantify the effects of alternative water sources on stream water quality. For 3 yr, loads of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total phosphorus (TP), and total suspended solids (TSS) were measured during storm flow, and loads of DRP, TP, TSS, and Escherichia coli were measured every 14 d during base flow. We also used GPS collars to determine amount of time cattle spent in riparian areas. Our results showed that cattle-grazed pastures with unfenced streams contributed significant loads of DRP, TP, TSS, and E. coli to surface waters (p < 0.01). Time spent by cattle in riparian areas as well as storm flow loads of DRP, TP, and TSS were larger (p < 0.08) in the pasture with the smaller amount of nonriparian shade. Water trough availability decreased base flow loads of TSS and E. coli in both streams, and decreased time cattle spent in riparian areas in the pasture with the smaller amount of nonriparian shade (p < 0.08). Our results indicate that possible BMPs to reduce contamination from cattle-grazed pastures would be to develop or encourage nonriparian shade and to provide cattle with alternative water sources away from the stream.

Abstract
Three Angus steers (410 kg) cannulated in the proximal duodenum were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square to evaluate the effects of dietary lipid level and oil source on ruminal biohydrogenation and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) outflow. Dietary treatments included: 1) typical corn (TC; 79.2% typical corn), 2) high-oil corn (HOC; 79.2% high-oil corn), and 3) the TC diet with corn oil added to supply an amount of lipid equal to the HOC diet (OIL; 76.9% TC + 2.4% corn oil). Duodenal samples were collected for 4 d following 10-d diet adaptation periods. Data were analyzed with animal, square, period, and treatment in the model and planned, nonorthogonal contrasts were used to test the effects of dietary lipid content (TC vs HOC and OIL) and oil source (HOC vs OIL) on ruminal biohydrogenation. Intake and duodenal flow of total long-chain fatty acids were increased (P < 0.05) by over 63% for diets containing more lipid regardless of oil source. Apparent ruminal dry matter and long chain fatty acid digestibilities were not altered (P > 0.05) by dietary lipid level or oil source. Ruminal biohydrogenation of total and individual 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids was greater (P < 0.05) for diets with higher lipid content. Biohydrogenation of oleic acid was greater (P < 0.05) for HOC than OIL, but biohydrogenation of linoleic acid was lower (P < 0.05) for HOC than OIL. Duodenal flows of palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and arachidic acids were more than 30% greater (P < 0.05) for diets containing more lipid. Flow of all trans-octadecenoic acids was greater (P < 0.05) for diets containing more lipid. Corn oil addition increased (P < 0.05) the flow of trans-10 octadecenoic acid and the trans-10, cis-12 isomer of CLA by threefold compared to feeding high-oil corn. Feeding high-oil corn or adding corn oil to typical corn rations increased intake, biohydrogenation, and duodenal flow of unsaturated long-chain fatty acids. Compared with high-oil corn diets, addition of corn oil increased duodenal flow of trans-10, trans-12 and cis-12 isomers of octadecenoic acid and the trans-10, cis-12 isomer of CLA. The amount of cis-9, trans-11 isomer of conjugated linoleic acid flowing to the duodenum was less than 260 mg/d, a value over 20 times lower than flow of trans-11 vaccenic acid indicating the importance of tissue desaturation for enhanced conjugated linoleic acid content of beef.

Abstract
A study involving a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was conducted to evaluate effects of hybrid (Pioneer 3335 and 3489), maturity (half milkline and blacklayer), and mechanical processing (field chopper with and without on-board rollers engaged) on intake and digestibility of corn silage. Forty Angus steers (322 +/- 5.2 kg BW) were assigned to the eight silage treatments (five steers per treatment) and individually fed using electronic gates. Diets consisted of 60% corn silage and 40% chopped alfalfa hay (DM basis). Following a 5-d adaptation period, intake was measured for 7 d and subsequently fecal samples were collected for 5 d. Chromic oxide (5 g/d) was fed beginning 7 d before fecal sample collection and digestibility was determined by the ratio of Cr in the feed and feces. Steers were reallocated to treatments and these procedures were repeated, providing 10 observations per treatment. In addition, all silages were ruminally incubated in six mature cows for 0, 8, 16, 24, 48, and 96 h to determine extent and rate of DM, starch, NDF, and ADF disappearance. Processing increased DMI of hybrid 3489 but did not affect DMI of hybrid 3335 (hybrid x processing; P < 0.06). Total tract digestibility of DM, starch, NDF, and ADF decreased (P < 0.01) as plant maturity increased. Maturity tended to decrease starch digestibility more for hybrid 3489 than for hybrid 3335 (hybrid x maturity; P < 0.10). Processing increased (P < 0.01) starch digestibility but decreased (P < 0.01) NDF and ADF digestibility, resulting in no processing effect on DM digestibility. There was a numerical trend for processing to increase starch digestibility more for latethan for early-maturity corn silage (maturity x processing; P = 0.11). Processing increased in situ rates of DM and starch disappearance and maturity decreased in situ disappearance rates of starch and fiber. These data indicate that hybrid, maturity, and processing all affect corn silage digestibility. Mechanical processing of corn silage increased starch digestibility, which may have been associated with the observed decreased fiber digestibility.

Abstract
To assess the effects of feeding high-oil corn on carcass characteristics and meat quality, 60 yearling steers were fed high concentrate diets containing either control corn (82% of diet), high-oil corn (82% of diet), or high-oil corn at a concentration that was isocaloric with the control diet (74% of diet). After being fed for 84 d, steers were slaughtered. At 72 h postmortem, carcass data were collected and rib sections from five steers grading U.S. Choice and five steers grading U.S. Select from each treatment were collected, vacuum packaged, and aged for 14 d. Three steaks (2.54 cm thick) were removed from each rib for Warner-Bratzler shear force measurement, sensory appraisal, and fatty acid composition analyses. Data were analyzed with treatment as the main effect for the carcass data and treatment, quality grade, and two-way interaction in the model for the longissimus data. The two-way interaction was nonsignificant (P > 0.05) for all variables tested. No differences were detected (P > 0.05) in carcass measurements except for marbling scores and quality grades, both of which were greater (P < 0.05) for carcasses from steers fed the high-oil corn. Overall, 78% of steers fed the high-oil corn graded U.S. Choice compared with 47% for the control and 67% for isocaloric group. Shear force and sensory properties of the longissimus were not different (P > 0.05) among treatments. Steaks from U.S. Choice carcasses rated higher (P < 0.05) for tenderness and tended to rate higher (P < 0.10) for juiciness. Feeding the isocaloric and high-oil diets increased (P < 0.05) linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, and the total PUFA content of lipid extracted from the longissimus. Saturated fatty acid percentage was lowest (P < 0.05) for high-oil corn and highest (P < 0.05) for control, with isocaloric being intermediate. Feeding high-oil corn increased (P < 0.05) pentadecyclic acid, margaric acid, and total odd-chain fatty acid content. Feeding high-oil corn in finishing beef cattle diets enhanced intramuscular lipid deposition and increased unsaturation of fatty acids of the longissimus.

Abstract
Sixty crossbred beef steers (initial BW = 412 kg) were used in a 83-d finishing study to determine the effect of feeding dry rolled high-oil corn on performance and total-tract digestibility of finishing diets. Steers were allotted by weight to the following dietary treatments: 1) control corn (C; 82% normal corn, 12% triticale silage), 2) high-oil corn (HO; 82% high-oil corn, 12% silage), and 3) high-oil corn formulated to be isocaloric to C (ISO; 74% high-oil corn, 20% silage). Total lipid content was 4.9% (DM basis) for normal corn and 7.0% for high-oil corn. Steers were individually fed using electronic gates. Quantity of feed offered and refused was recorded daily. Fecal samples were collected on d 63 to 66 of the trial to determine digestibility. Chromic oxide was fed as an indigestible marker for 7 d before fecal collection began. Planned contrasts of HO vs C and ISO vs C were used to assess treatment differences. Dry matter intake was greater for steers fed C vs HO (P < 0.01) or C vs ISO (P < 0.01), but daily gain and feed efficiency were not affected (P > 0.05) by treatments. Digestibility of DM, OM, starch, and GE was greater (P < 0.05) for the HO diet than the C diet, but lipid digestibility did not differ among treatments (P > 0.05). The combined effect of greater GE content and digestibility resulted in greater (P < 0.01) DE content for the HO than for the C diet. Calculated DE of the corn was 8.3% greater (3.74 Mcal/kg; P < 0.01) for the HO diet and 6.5% greater (3.67 Mcal/kg; P < 0.01) for the ISO diet than the corn in the C diet (3.25 Mcal/kg). Dry matter and GE digestibility did not differ (P > 0.05) between the C and ISO diets. Steers consuming ISO had greater (P < 0.05) starch digestibility than steers fed the C diet. Although HO had higher DE, DE intake was similar (P > 0.05) for HO and C due to lower DMI for HO. These results indicate that available energy is greater from high-oil corn than from typical corn, but depressed voluntary feed intake prevented performance improvements and resulted in equal energy intakes between high-oil corn and typical corn diets.
