Dosis‐Wirkungs‐Beziehung zwischen Alkoholkonsum und Psoriasis: Systematische Übersicht und Metaanalyse

The association between psoriasis and alcohol consumption has been inconsistent across various studies. However, to the best of our knowledge, no dose-response meta-analysis has been performed to date. This study aims to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and psoriasis. The search was performed on July 27, 2021, using Embase and MEDLINE. The restricted cubic spline analysis was used to perform a dose-response analysis. We identified 3,904 studies, of which 48 studies with 1,702,847 individuals across 24 countries were included. Alcohol consumption was positively associated with psoriasis (odds ratio [OR], 1.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-1.70). In addition, a significantly increased OR for psoriasis was observed in males (OR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.13-3.01) but not in females (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.97-1.54). Based on eight studies, including three cohort and five case-control studies, the analysis revealed that with each additional gram of daily alcohol intake, the OR for psoriasis increased by 4%. We found a positive association between alcohol consumption and psoriasis. The association is more prominent in the group drinking more than 45 g of alcohol per day (3.2 alcoholic drink equivalent).

Dose-response analysis between alcohol consumption and psoriasis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The association between psoriasis and alcohol consumption has been inconsistent across various studies. Contributing Factors of a Good Death for Children With Cancer From Bereaved Parents' Perspectives in South Korea

Achieving a good-quality death for children with cancer is as paramount as saving their life, given its implications for both the children's end-of-life quality and the grief journey of their parents. This study explored factors contributing to a good death for children with cancer, as perceived by bereaved parents in South Korea. A retrospective survey was conducted, involving 58 bereaved parents of a child who died of cancer. t-tests and regressions were performed to identify factors related to deceased children associated with parents' reports of a good death for children with cancer. The results revealed significant correlations between parents' age, income, religious affiliation, time elapsed since death, child's age at death, and cancer recurrence with several aspects of a good death. These findings underscore the importance of assessing characteristics of both parents and their children to enhance the quality of death experienced by children with cancer in South Korea.

Effect of perioperative "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" based on IKAP theory on short-term prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to investigate the "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" under the theory of Information-Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (IKAP) in patients with esophageal cancer during the perioperative period and to analyze the influence on the short-term prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

From April 2022 to February 2023, 118 patients who underwent radical esophagectomy in the First Hospital of Huai'an Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were enrolled using the convenience sampling method. They were divided into the IKAP group (59 cases) and the Control Group (Group C) (59 cases), according to the random number table method. The conventional intervention was performed during the perioperative period, and the IKAP group was also given "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" based on IKAP theory. The first postoperative defecation time, exhaust time, feeding time, discharge time, and postoperative complication rate of the two groups were compared. Meanwhile, blood samples were collected before surgery and 1, 3, 7, and 30 days after surgery (at outpatient review) for the detection of inflammatory factor indexes and nutritional indexes.

RESULTS

Patients within the IKAP group showed a shorter first postoperative exhaust and defecation time, eating time, and hospital compared to the control group (p<0.05). Before surgery, there was no significant difference in serum inflammatory factors and nutritional indexes between the two groups (p>0.05). Comparing the levels of serum inflammatory factors in the two groups after surgery, the levels of CRP and IL-6 in the IKAP group were lower than those in the control group on days 1, 3, and 7 after surgery. After 30 days, the serum CRP level was found to be lower than the control group, but no statistical difference with the control level of serum IL-6 (p<0.05) was found. Compared with the serum nutritional index levels in the two groups: 1 d after surgery, the serum HGB, PA, and TRF levels were not different (p>0.05). The serum ALB level in the IKAP group was higher than that in the control group (p<0.05). Postoperative 3 d, 7 d, the serum levels of HGB, ALB, PA, and TRF in the IKAP group were higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). After 30 d, there was no statistical difference in serum HGB levels between the two groups (p<0.05); Serum ALB, PA, and TRF levels in the IKAP group were higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). From preoperative to 30 days after surgery, serum CRP and IL-6 levels in 2 groups were first increased and then decreased, while serum HGB, ALB, PA, and TRF levels were first decreased and then increased. After surgery, the IKAP group showed a greater incidence of complications in patients than in controls (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In patients with esophageal cancer, perioperative "Internet + rehabilitation guidance" based on IKAP theory can effectively shorten the postoperative gastrointestinal function recovery time and rapidly reduce the inflammatory response, improving the nutritional status of the body, thereby reducing the risk of short-term postoperative complications.

Intergenerational solidarity and digital communication during the Covid-19 pandemic in South Korea: Implications for dyadic well-being

Previous research has not considered how digital communication fits with the established intergenerational solidarity paradigm, although the paradigm has undergone other refinements over time. Consequently, less is known about how the use of digital communication creates new types of intergenerational solidarity between parents and adult children, and how they are associated with their well-being. With this foundation, we aimed to identify new dyadic patterns of intergenerational solidarity between parents and adult children during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea, with an emphasis on digital communication (texting, video call, and social media interaction), its intersection with other dimensions of solidarity, and its association with parents' and children's well-being (depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and life satisfaction). Using an online survey method, we collected data from 407 parent-adult child dyads between April and June 2022 from the Seoul Metropolitan area in South Korea. Three-step latent class analysis was used for data analysis. We identified four classes describing intergenerational solidarity between parents and adult children (tight-knit, distant-but-digitally-connected, conflictual, and independent). We found that among dyads of parents and adult children who had tight-knit and distant-but-digitally-connected relationships with each other, parents reported better well-being on all three outcomes, and children reported better life satisfaction compared to dyads who had conflictual relationships. Our findings suggest that incorporating digital communication into the intergenerational solidarity paradigm is useful to better understand the multidimensional characteristics of intergenerational relationships between older parents and their adult children.

Spousal loss and cognitive function: the importance of gender and multiple dimensions of marital quality

Objectives: Research suggests that the death of a spouse has an adverse effect on a widow(er)'s cognition. However, little research has examined how the marital context before widowhood and gender influence this association. Guided by the social ambivalence and disease (SAD) model, this study examined the associations between spousal loss and cognition , with moderating effects of gender and pre-loss marital quality.Method: We analyzed a national longitudinal data, Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), specifically MIDUS 2 (2004-2005) and MIDUS 3 (2013-2014). The analytic sample consisted of (1) 146 participants who experienced the death of their spouse between MIDUS 2 and MIDUS 3 and (2) 144 age- and gender-matched comparison participants who did not lose their spouse during the period.Results: Adverse influence of widowhood on cognition was more pronounced among bereaved men than bereaved women. Widowed individuals whose relationships with their deceased spouse were ambivalent had poorer cognition than widowed individuals who had aversive relationships with their deceased spouse.Conclusion: Findings suggest that the influence of spousal death on cognitive functioning depends on gender and pre-loss marital quality, emphasizing the importance of considering pre-loss marital relationship and gender dynamics in developing efficient interventions for the widowed.

Impacts of menopause hormone therapy on mood disorders among postmenopausal women

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the modulatory effects of menopause hormone therapy (MHT) on mood disorders among postmenopausal women.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted to recruit postmenopausal women, including patients (arranged MHT for over 3 years as the medication group) and non-MHT controls. All participants were asked to respond to the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener (GAD-7) questionnaires to assess their depression and anxiety status.

RESULTS

A total of 230 cases from the two groups were determined based on propensity score matching analysis by matching the menopausal age and menopausal durations. We found that MHT served as a favorable modulator in the depression status of postmenopausal women. Among the four factors of the CES-D questionnaire, our data indicated that the differences between the two groups fell primarily into two aspects: depressive emotion, and somatic symptoms or retarded activities. MHT was mainly involved in improving the depression of overweight women. However, no substantial effects of MHT were observed on the regulation of anxiety.

CONCLUSION

Postmenopausal women, especially the overweight population, who have experienced MHT exhibited an improved depressive status but not their anxiety condition.

Social Well-Being, Psychological Factors, and Chronic Conditions Among Older Adults

Background

Aging is characterized by the decline in physical health, functional status, and loss of social roles and relationships that can challenge the quality of life. Social well-being may help explain how aging individuals experience declining physical health and social relationships. Despite the high prevalence of chronic conditions among older adults, research exploring the relationship between social well-being and chronic disease is sparse.

Objectives

The study aims were to investigate the relationship between social well-being and psychological factors (e.g., perceived control, life satisfaction, self-esteem, active coping, optimism, and religious coping) by chronic condition in older adults.

Design

Cross-sectional study.

Participants

The current study comprises older adults (N = 1,251, aged ≥ 65 y) who participated in the third wave of the National Survey of Midlife in the United States (i.e., MIDUS).

Setting

MIDUS was conducted on a random-digit-dial sample of community-dwelling, English-speaking adults.

Measurements

Six instruments representing psychological resources (life satisfaction, perceived control, self-esteem, optimism, active coping, and religious coping) and five dimensions of social well-being (social actualization, social coherence, social acceptance, social contribution, social integration) were measured. An index of chronic disease comprised of self-reported data whether they had received a physician's diagnosis for any chronic conditions over the past year.

Results

The findings indicated that the individuals without chronic conditions had significantly higher social integration, social acceptance, and social contribution scores than the individuals with chronic conditions (t = 2.26, p < 0.05, t = 2.85, p < 0.01, and t = 2.23, p < 0.05, respectively). For individuals diagnosed with more than one chronic condition, perceived control, self-esteem, and optimism were positively related to their social well-being (β = .33, p < .001, β = .17, p < .001, and β = .33, p < .001, respectively).

Conclusion

Findings suggested that older adults with multiple chronic conditions have a decrease in social well-being. Chronic disease management programs may help increase social well-being among individuals with multiple chronic conditions.

The relationship between family and residential settings: Aging in place vs long term care facility in South Korea

Objective: This study aims to explore the factors influencing long-term-care beneficiaries’ decisions between home health care and institutional care in South Korea. This study further investigated the association between these two types of long-term care services and emotional, financial, and physical burden alleviation among the beneficiaries and their family members. Methods: We analyzed data from 2019 Long-Term Care Survey. Out of 5,606 respondents, 4,079 long-term care beneficiaries and family members were included in this study. Logistic regression models were conducted to understand factors associated with types of long-term care services, and the association between types of long-term care services and burden alleviation. Results: Having a spouse, having children, or a shorter geographic distance between the beneficiaries and their family members were factors associated with higher likelihood of receiving home health care rather than institutional care. Also, more sever mobility limitation, outpatient care, and fall experiences were associated with higher likelihood of receiving institutional care. Utilization of institutional care was significantly associated with higher alleviation of physical burden. No significant differences between home health care and institutional care were found on emotional and financial burden alleviation. Conclusions: The findings suggest that family resources may be beneficial for older adults to pursue aging in place in later life. However, the physical toll of their family members may exist. Our findings provide evidence to inform public policy decisions on long-term care services for older adults and their family members.

Reasons why patients with tuberculosis in South Korea stop anti-TB treatment: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: As there had been no reduction in the TB burden in South Korea since 2000, a public-private mix (PPM) strategy was launched in 2011. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons for lost to follow-up (LTFU) among TB patients and their clinical characteristics.METHOD: A multicentre, cross-sectional study based on in-depth interviews with patients and their families by TB specialist nurses was conducted. Patients who were reported with a final outcome of LTFU in 2015-2017 at all PPM hospitals across the country were enrolled. Enrolled patients were classified into six subgroups by age and three major reasons for LTFU (adverse effects, refusal of treatment, marginalisation) and their clinical features were compared.RESULTS: Among 780 patients, those who were lost to follow-up due to adverse effects accounted for the largest proportion (n = 387). LTFU in those aged <65 years who refused treatment (n = 189) and those aged <65 years who were marginalised (n = 108) were related to having smear-positive TB and a previous history of unfavourable outcomes.CONCLUSION: To reduce LTFU in South Korea, comprehensive strategies, including management of adverse effects, systematic counselling and education, should be implemented.

Suppressed Degradation and Enhanced Performance of CsPbI3 Perovskite Quantum Dot Solar Cells via Engineering of Electron Transport Layers

CsPbI₃ perovskite quantum dots (CsPbI₃-PQDs) have recently come into focus as a light-harvesting material that can act as a platform through which to combine the material advantages of both perovskites and QDs. However, the low cubic-phase stability of CsPbI₃-PQDs in ambient conditions has been recognized as a factor that inhibits device stability. TiO₂ nanoparticles are the most regularly used materials as an electron transport layer (ETL) in CsPbI₃-PQD photovoltaics; however, we found that TiO₂ can facilitate the cubic-phase degradation of CsPbI₃-PQDs due to its vigorous photocatalytic activity. To address these issues, we have developed chloride-passivated SnO₂ QDs (Cl@SnO₂ QDs), which have low photocatalytic activity and few surface traps, to suppress the cubic-phase degradation of CsPbI₃-PQDs. Given these advantages, the CsPbI₃-PQD solar cells based on Cl@SnO₂ ETLs show significantly improved device operational stability (under conditions of 50% relative humidity and 1-sun illumination), compared to those based on TiO₂ ETLs. In addition, the Cl@SnO₂-based devices showed improved open circuit voltage and photocurrent density, resulting in enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 14.5% compared to that of TiO₂-based control devices (PCE of 13.8%).

Relationship Quality and Depressive Symptoms Among Very Old Parents and Their Older Children in South Korea

Research has consistently reported the association between intergenerational relationship quality and mental health outcomes in later life. However, few studies have examined the link among very old parents and their older children, and even fewer studies investigated whether the relationship quality matters similarly to parents and children. Employing a dyadic approach, this study examined how one’s own and partner’s perceptions of relationship quality (i.e., support and conflict) are associated with depressive symptoms among very old parents and their children. Data from 105 dyads of parents (age 81-97; M = 87.92, SD = 2.80) and their children (age 65-72; M = 65.87, SD = 1.23) in South Korea were used. Results showed that parents tended to report significantly higher levels of intergenerational support and lower levels of intergenerational conflict, compared to their children. Regarding the actor effects of relationship quality, one’s own perceptions of intergenerational conflict were positively associated with depressive symptoms for both parents (β = 0.26, p &lt; .01) and children (β = 0.37, p &lt; .001), whereas intergenerational support was not significant. In terms of the partner effect, intergenerational support (reported by parents) was negatively related to depressive symptoms only for children (β = -0.21, p &lt; .01), but the partner effect of conflict was not significant. The findings highlight the centrality of perceptions of intergenerational relationship in understanding well-being in later life. Further, children’s depressive symptoms were susceptible to how their parents view the relationship. Findings were discussed in the context of Intergenerational Stake Theory.

Spousal Loss and Cognitive Functioning: Do Pre-Loss Marital Quality and Gender Matter?

Prior research has found that the risk of cognitive decline increases after the death of a spouse. In general, the impact of life transitions is contingent on contextual factors such as socio-demographic characteristics or relationship quality. However, there is limited research on how marital quality before spousal loss and gender influence the association between spousal loss and cognitive change. The current study examines the effects of spousal loss on change in cognitive functioning as well as the moderating effects of pre-loss marital quality and gender. Data from two waves of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study were analyzed (MIDUS2: 2004-05, MIDUS3: 2013-14). The analytic sample consists of two groups: (1) 179 bereaved adults who were age 54 or older at MIDUS2 (M = 65.2, SD = 9.5) and whose spouses died between MIDUS2 and MIDUS3, and (2) 179 non-bereaved adults, matched with the bereaved group on age and gender, who did not experience spousal loss between the two waves. Cognitive function was assessed via BTACT (Brief Telephone Adult Cognition Test) at both waves. Regression results show that both pre-loss marital quality and gender significantly moderate the association between spousal loss and change in cognitive functioning. Specifically, relative to their counterparts, men and those who reported better marital relationships prior to spousal death had a greater risk of cognitive decline after a spouse’s death. The findings suggest the significance of pre-loss marital quality and gender for cognitive changes in widowhood and have implications for the development of efficient interventions

The Impact of Spouse's Illness on Depressive Symptoms: The Roles of Spousal Caregiving and Marital Satisfaction

OBJECTIVES

To examine (a) the relationship between own depressive symptoms and spouses' health condition changes among mid- and later-life couples and (b) the roles of marital relationship quality and spousal caregiving in this relationship.

METHOD

Fixed-effect analyses were conducted using data from 3,055 couples aged 45 and older from Waves 1 (2006) to 4 (2012) of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Ageing.

RESULTS

Spousal stroke was linked with higher depression symptoms. Spouses' onset of cancer was related to an increase in depressive symptoms for wives, but not for husbands. Spousal caregiving and marital satisfaction were significant moderators: Wives caring for spouses with cancer reported more depressive symptoms than those not providing care; husbands caring for spouses with lung disease reported more depressive symptoms than those not providing care. The associations between wives' heart disease, husbands' cancer diagnosis, and depressive symptoms were weaker for couples with higher marital satisfaction.

DISCUSSION

The findings suggest variations across health condition types and gender. Relationship quality and caregiving are important contexts moderating the negative impact of spousal chronic illness on depression. Health care providers should be aware that spouses' health statuses are connected and that type of illness may affect the care context.

Determination of Strong-Phase Parameters in D→K_{S,L}^{0}π^{+}π^{-}

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D^{0} and D[over ¯]^{0} decays to K_{S,L}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} using a sample of 2.93  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ_{3} with B decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ_{3} measurement is expected to be between 0.7° and 1.2°, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements, based on the studies of the simulated data. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ_{3} will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other D-decay modes.

Observation of a Resonant Structure in e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0}

A partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0} at the center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.000 to 2.644 GeV. The data samples of e^{+}e^{-} collisions, collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider with a total integrated luminosity of 300  pb^{-1}, are analyzed. The total Born cross sections for the process e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0}, as well as the Born cross sections for the subprocesses e^{+}e^{-}→ϕπ^{0}π^{0}, K^{+}(1460)K^{-}, K_{1}^{+}(1400)K^{-}, K_{1}^{+}(1270)K^{-}, and K^{*+}(892)K^{*-}(892), are measured versus the center-of-mass energy. The corresponding results for e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0} and ϕπ^{0}π^{0} are consistent with those of BABAR with better precision. By analyzing the cross sections for the four subprocesses, K^{+}(1460)K^{-}, K_{1}^{+}(1400)K^{-}, K_{1}^{+}(1270)K^{-}, and K^{*+}(892)K^{*-}(892), a structure with mass M=(2126.5±16.8±12.4)  MeV/c^{2} and width Γ=(106.9±32.1±28.1)  MeV is observed with an overall statistical significance of 6.3σ, although with very limited significance in the subprocesses e^{+}e^{-}→K_{1}^{+}(1270)K^{-} and K^{*+}(892)K^{*-}(892). The resonant parameters of the observed structure suggest it can be identified with the ϕ(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to the internal nature of the ϕ(2170).

Measurement of Proton Electromagnetic Form Factors in e^{+}e^{-}→pp[over ¯] in the Energy Region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e^{+}e^{-}→pp[over ¯] is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (sqrt[s]) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5  pb^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section (σ_{pp[over ¯]}) of e^{+}e^{-}→pp[over ¯] is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (|G_{eff}|), electric (|G_{E}|), and magnetic (|G_{M}|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. |G_{E}/G_{M}| and |G_{M}| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the spacelike region, and |G_{E}| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the timelike region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Measurement of the Cross Section for e^{+}e^{-}→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} and Observation of an Excited Ξ Baryon

Using a total of 11.0  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e^{+}e^{-}→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+}, no significant ψ(4230) or ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level on Γ_{ee}B for the processes ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited Ξ baryon at 1820  MeV/c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2-6.5σ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)  MeV/c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)  MeV, which confirms the existence of the J^{P}=3/2^{-} state Ξ(1820).

Observation of the Semileptonic D^{+} Decay into the K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0} Axial-Vector Meson

By analyzing a 2.93  fb^{-1} data sample of e^{+}e^{-} collisions, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the semileptonic D^{+} transition into the axial-vector meson D^{+}→K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}e^{+}ν_{e} with a statistical significance greater than 10σ. Its decay branching fraction is determined to be B[D^{+}→K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}e^{+}ν_{e}]=(2.30±0.26_{-0.21}^{+0.18}±0.25)×10^{-3}, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third originates from the input branching fraction of K[over ¯]_{1}(1270)^{0}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{0}.

Observation of the Leptonic Decay D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ}

We report the first observation of D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ} with a significance of 5.1σ. We measure B(D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ})=(1.20±0.24_{stat}±0.12_{syst})×10^{-3}. Taking the world average B(D^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ})=(3.74±0.17)×10^{-4}, we obtain R_{τ/μ}=Γ(D^{+}→τ^{+}ν_{τ})/Γ(D^{+}→μ^{+}ν_{μ})=3.21±0.64_{stat}±0.43_{syst}., which is consistent with the standard model expectation of lepton flavor universality. Using external inputs, our results give values for the D^{+} decay constant f_{D^{+}} and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cd}| that are consistent with, but less precise than, other determinations.

FILIAL PIETY AND RELATIONSHIP QUALITY AMONG OLDEST-OLD PARENTS AND OLDER-ADULT CHILDREN IN KOREA: A DYADIC APPROACH

Objectives: Research has consistently reported the importance of adult children’s filial piety in maintaining relationship quality with their older-adult parents, especially in Asian countries due in large part to the influence of Confucianism. However, less attention has been paid to its effects in their later relationship—oldest-old parents and older-adult children, and very few studies employed a dyadic approach. Methods: In the current study, we examined the effects of actor- and partner effects of the attitudes toward filial piety on intergenerational relationship quality. Data from 105 dyads of very old parents, 81 to 97 years old (M = 87.9, SD = 2.8) and their older-adult children, 65 to 72 years old (M = 65.9, SD = 1.2) were utilized for the analyses. Results: Results showed that children’s attitudes toward filial piety were positively related to the relationship quality reported by both old children (i.e., actor-effects, β = .64, p < .001) and oldest-old parents (i.e., partner-effects, β = .63, p = .001). The effect of actor’s and partner’s attitudes toward filial piety on relationship quality was not significant. Discussion: Findings suggest that children’s attitudes toward filial piety, as compared to parents, may play a more important role in the quality of relationships between oldest-old parents and their older-adult children in South Korea.

DAILY INTERACTIONS WITH THE VERY OLD PARENTS AND OLD CHILDREN: CONCORDANCE IN REPORTS AND RELATIONSHIP TYPE

Objectives: Studies have been increased on daily lives of older adults; however, little is known about daily interactions between parents and children, especially both are in their later lives. Utilizing parent-child dyadic data, this study aims to investigate the joint daily interactions of the very old parents and their old children with focus on the relationship type and differences in parent’s and child’s report. Methods: A sample of 105 parents (aged ≥ 80) and 105 children (aged ≥ 65) were interviewed to assess frequency on daily interactions (e.g., contact by phone or email, talking, eating and going out together). Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine differences in amounts of daily interactions by relationship type (e.g., mother-daughter, mother-son and mother-in-law – daughter-in-law). Results: Both parents and children reported high level of daily interactions; however, frequency of watching TV and going out together were relatively lower, compared to other forms of daily interactions. Parents and children showed high concordance in reports; 84% of dyads had the same reports in interactions (absolute mean discrepancy score < 0.1). Mother-daughter relationship reported significantly higher frequency on daily interactions, comparted to mother-son relationship. No significant differences were found between the mother-daughter dyads and the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law dyads. Discussion: Findings suggest that very old parents and old children tend to have high levels of daily interactions, with high concordance in reports. It also highlights its importance of considering relationship type in the dynamic of daily lives and experiences between very old parents and old children.

Trajectories of cognitive decline by widowhood status among Korean older adults

OBJECTIVES

Given the limited evidence regarding the longitudinal impact of widowhood on cognitive function in later life, the present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal effect of widowhood status on cognitive change among Korean older adults.

METHODS

The study sample was drawn from a nationally representative data set, the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA); it consisted of 3,660 Korean adults aged 60 and over who were married at baseline. Our dependent variable, cognitive function, was measured by the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). Widowhood status was measured with the combination of widowhood status and duration. Growth curve models were constructed using five waves of the KLoSA (2006-2014) to examine the longitudinal trajectories of cognitive changes.

RESULTS

In the unadjusted model, widowed older adults had significantly lower cognitive function than their nonwidowed counterparts regardless of widowhood duration. Adjusting for covariates, results from the growth curve models showed that widowed older adults with widowhood duration 4 to 6 years had a significantly steeper decline in cognitive function than nonwidowed older adults (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that widowhood is detrimental for late-life cognitive function. Further research is required to understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Policy and practice implications are discussed according to the cultural context.

Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition via TGF-β1/Smad pathway in hepatic carcinoma cells

Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) is dysregulated in a number of human cancers. Herein, we report that PRMT1 expression is directly associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in hepatic carcinoma cells. Firstly, we find that PRMT1 expression is higher in hepatic carcinoma tissues than that in normal liver tissues at both mRNA and protein levels, and higher expression of PRMT1 correlates with poor survival in liver tumors. The data in vitro reveals that PRMT1 knockdown inhibits the abilities of proliferation, migration and invasion, while PRMT1 overexpression promotes the above behaviors in hepatic carcinoma cells. Further studies indicate that PRMT1 knockdown remarkably decreases the expression of mesenchymal markers including Vimentin, Snail and N-cadherin, and upregulates expression of epithelial markers E-cadherin. Conversely, PRMT1 overexpression results in the opposite effects. Additionally, we identified that PRMT1 knockdown resulted in downregulation of TGF-β1, p-Smad2 and p-Smad3, while PRMT1 overexpression activated TGF-β1, p-Smad2 and p-Smad3. These findings suggest that PRMT1 promotes EMT in hepatic carcinoma cells probably via TGF-β1/Smad pathway, and might represent a novel anti-liver cancer strategy.

P4580The effect of anesthetic techniques on cardiac troponin-T after non-cardiac surgery

Background

The effects of anesthetics on cardiac protection and clinical outcomes have shown conflicting results in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Unlike cardiac surgeries in which cardio-protective effects of anesthetic techniques have been reported, it lacks evidence and reproducibility in non-cardiac surgery. A current generation high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTnI) is known to detect perioperative myocardial injury in non-cardiac surgery which is closely related to clinical outcomes. In this study, we hypothesized that balanced anesthesia using both remifentanil and volatile agents is the most effective in reducing postoperative myocardial injury, and compared the incidence of postoperative myocardial injury among different types of general anesthesia.

Methods

We analyzed the data of 3555 patients who underwent general anesthesia for non-cardiac surgery in our hospital between February 2010 and December 2016. In all patients, hs-cTnI was detected in preoperative period and postoperative period within 48 hours. Major exclusion criteria was troponin elevation before surgery. Patients were stratified into three groups; 661 patients who were received propofol-remifentanil total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA group), 1279 patients who were received volatile anesthesia without remifentanil (Volatile group) and 1622 patients who were received volatile anesthesia with remifentanil (Balanced group). The Primary outcome was troponin elevation [hs-cTnI≥0.04 ng/mL] within post-operative within 48 hours, and the incidence of postoperative complications such as postoperative acute kidney injury, new-onset atrial fibrillation and in-hospital mortality were also compared.

Results

The occurrence of myocaridial injury were significant difference between three groups. The occurrence of myocardial injury was significantly lower in the Balanced group than in Volatile group after adjustment (Odds ratio (OR) = 0.727; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.59–0.89; P-value = 0.002). Balanced group and TIVA group showed comparable results in risk of postoperative troponin elevation after adjustment (OR 1.131; 95% CI 0.96–1.33; P-value = 0.133). The incidence of troponin elevation was significantly higher in Volatile group than TIVA group after adjustment (OR 1.6; 95% CI 0.52–0.96; P-value = 0.005). The incidence of AKI was significantly lower in Balanced group than Volatile group after adjustment (OR 0.637; 95% CI 0.49–0.81; P-value <0.001).

Conclusion

The remifentanil combination during general anesthesia may be associated with myocardial protection effect in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Whether this impact leads to adverse long-term outcome remains unclear, and requires further investigation.

Complete Measurement of the Λ Electromagnetic Form Factors

The exclusive process e^{+}e^{-}→ΛΛ[over ¯], with Λ→pπ^{-} and Λ[over ¯]→p[over ¯]π^{+}, has been studied at sqrt[s]=2.396  GeV for measurement of the timelike Λ electric and magnetic form factors, G_{E} and G_{M}. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 66.9  pb^{-1}, was collected with the BESIII detector for this purpose. A multidimensional analysis with a complete decomposition of the spin structure of the reaction enables a determination of the modulus of the ratio R=|G_{E}/G_{M}| and, for the first time for any baryon, the relative phase ΔΦ=Φ_{E}-Φ_{M}. The resulting values are R=0.96±0.14(stat)±0.02(syst) and ΔΦ=37°±12°(stat)±6°(syst), respectively. These are obtained using the recently established and most precise value of the asymmetry parameter α_{Λ}=0.750±0.010 measured by BESIII. In addition, the cross section is measured with unprecedented precision to be σ=118.7±5.3(stat)±5.1(syst)  pb, which corresponds to an effective form factor of |G|=0.123±0.003(stat)±0.003(syst). The contribution from two-photon exchange is found to be negligible. Our result enables the first complete determination of baryon timelike electromagnetic form factors.

Amplitude Analysis of D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}η and First Observation of the W-Annihilation Dominant Decays D_{s}^{+}→a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{0} and D_{s}^{+}→a_{0}(980)^{0}π^{+}

We present the first amplitude analysis of the decay D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}η. We use an e^{+}e^{-} collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.19  fb^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV. We observe for the first time the W-annihilation dominant decays D_{s}^{+}→a_{0}(980)^{+}π^{0} and D_{s}^{+}→a_{0}(980)^{0}π^{+}. We measure the absolute branching fraction B(D_{s}^{+}→a_{0}(980)^{+(0)}π^{0^{(}+)},a_{0}(980)^{+(0)}→π^{+(0)}η)=(1.46±0.15_{stat}±0.23_{sys})%, which is larger than the branching fractions of other measured pure W-annihilation decays by at least one order of magnitude. In addition, we measure the branching fraction of D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}η with significantly improved precision.

Study of e^{+}e^{-}→γωJ/ψ and Observation of X(3872)→ωJ/ψ

We study the e^{+}e^{-}→γωJ/ψ process using 11.6  fb^{-1} e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from sqrt[s]=4.008  GeV to 4.600 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The X(3872) resonance is observed for the first time in the ωJ/ψ system with a significance of more than 5σ. The relative decay ratio of X(3872)→ωJ/ψ and π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ is measured to be R=1.6_{-0.3}^{+0.4}±0.2, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic (the same hereafter). The sqrt[s]-dependent cross section of e^{+}e^{-}→γX(3872) is also measured and investigated, and it can be described by a single Breit-Wigner resonance, referred to as the Y(4200), with a mass of 4200.6_{-13.3}^{+7.9}±3.0  MeV/c^{2} and a width of 115_{-26}^{+38}±12  MeV. In addition, to describe the ωJ/ψ mass distribution above 3.9  GeV/c^{2}, we need at least one additional Breit-Wigner resonance, labeled as X(3915), in the fit. The mass and width of the X(3915) are determined. The resonant parameters of the X(3915) agree with those of the Y(3940) in B→KωJ/ψ and of the X(3915) in γγ→ωJ/ψ observed by the Belle and BABAR experiments within errors.
