Nitric oxide releasing nanofiber stimulates revascularization in response to ischemia via cGMP-dependent protein kinase. PLoS One 2024; 19:e0303758. Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) promotes angiogenesis via various mechanisms; however, the effective transmission of NO in ischemic diseases is unclear. Herein, we tested whether NO-releasing nanofibers modulate therapeutic angiogenesis in an animal hindlimb ischemia model. Male wild-type C57BL/6 mice with surgically-induced hindlimb ischemia were treated with NO-releasing 3-methylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane (MAP3)-derived or control (i.e., non-NO-releasing) nanofibers, by applying them to the wound for 20 min, three times every two days. The amount of NO from the nanofiber into tissues was assessed by NO fluorometric assay. The activity of cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) was determined by western blot analysis. Perfusion ratios were measured 2, 4, and 14 days after inducing ischemia using laser doppler imaging. On day 4, Immunohistochemistry (IHC) with F4/80 and gelatin zymography were performed. IHC with CD31 was performed on day 14. To determine the angiogenic potential of NO-releasing nanofibers, aorta-ring explants were treated with MAP3 or control fiber for 20 min, and the sprout lengths were examined after 6 days. As per either LDPI (Laser doppler perfusion image) ratio or CD31 capillary density measurement, angiogenesis in the ischemic hindlimb was improved in the MAP3 nanofiber group; further, the total nitrate/nitrite concentration in the adduct muscle increased. The number of macrophage infiltrations and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity decreased. Vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), one of the major substrates for PKG, increased phosphorylation in the MAP3 group. MAP3 nanofiber or NO donor SNAP (s-nitroso-n-acetyl penicillamine)-treated aortic explants showed enhanced sprouting in an ex vivo aortic ring assay, which was partially abrogated by KT5823, a potent inhibitor of PKG. These findings suggest that the novel NO-releasing nanofiber, MAP3 activates PKG and promotes therapeutic angiogenesis in response to hindlimb ischemia.

Diagnosis of osteochondral lesions of the talus on Dual-layer spectral detector CT arthrography: clinical feasibility of virtual noncontrast images. Clin Radiol 2024:S0009-9260(24)00144-2. [PMID: 38649313 DOI: 10.1016/j.crad.2024.03.006] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/30/2023] [Revised: 03/05/2024] [Accepted: 03/12/2024] [Indexed: 04/25/2024]
Abstract
AIM To compare the image quality of virtual noncontrast (VNC) and true noncontrast (TNC) CT images and to evaluate the clinical feasibility of VNC CT images for assessing osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-five OLT patients who underwent ankle CT arthrography (CTA) using dual-layer spectral detector CT were enrolled. Reconstruction of VNC and three-dimensional volume rendering images was performed. Afterward, image noise, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were measured. For the subjective evaluation, two board-certified musculoskeletal radiologists [R2-1] assessed spatial resolution, overall image quality, and lesion conspicuity. The accuracy rate for OLT grading was determined in 23 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery. RESULTS While VNC images showed significantly less noise than TNC images, TNC images showed better SNRs and CNRs (p<.01). In the subjective analysis, TNC images showed better overall image quality (p<.001). For the 3D volume rendering images, VNC images scored significantly higher for lesion conspicuity (p<.001). The accuracy rates of CTA and CTA with VNC images for OLT grading were 79.2% and 83.3%, respectively. Regarding confidence level, when CTA and VNC images were evaluated together, the confidence level was significantly higher than that when only CTA images were evaluated (p<.001). CONCLUSION VNC imaging can provide better confidence level of OLT grading and evaluation of the integrity of the subchondral bone plate when combined with conventional CTA without additional radiation dose to the patient. In addition, VNC images-based 3D volume rendering reconstruction would be helpful for preoperative planning in OLT patients.

Clinical Validation of the Unparalleled Sensitivity of the Novel Allele-Discriminating Priming System Technology-Based EGFR Mutation Assay in Patients with Operable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. Cancer Res Treat 2024; 56:81-91. Abstract
PURPOSE Recently, we developed allele-discriminating priming system (ADPS) technology. This method increases the sensitivity of conventional quantitative polymerase chain reaction up to 100 folds, with limit of detection, 0.01%, with reinforced specificity. This prospective study aimed to develop and validate the accuracy of ADPS epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) Mutation Test Kit using clinical specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total 189 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissues resected from patients with non-small cell lung cancer were used to perform a comparative evaluation of the ADPS EGFR Mutation Test Kit versus the cobas EGFR Mutation Test v2, which is the current gold standard. When the two methods had inconsistent results, next-generation sequencing-based CancerSCAN was utilized as a referee. RESULTS The overall agreement of the two methods was 97.4% (93.9%-99.1%); the positive percent agreement, 95.0% (88.7%-98.4%); and the negative percent agreement, 100.0% (95.9%-100.0%). EGFR mutations were detected at a frequency of 50.3% using the ADPS EGFR Mutation Test Kit and 52.9% using the cobas EGFR Mutation Test v2. There were 10 discrepant mutation calls between the two methods. CancerSCAN reproduced eight ADPS results. In two cases, mutant allele fraction was ultra-low at 0.02% and 0.06%, which are significantly below the limit of detection of the cobas assay and CancerSCAN. Based on the EGFR genotyping by ADPS, the treatment options could be switched in five patients. CONCLUSION The highly sensitive and specific ADPS EGFR Mutation Test Kit would be useful in detecting the patients who have lung cancer with EGFR mutation, and can benefit from the EGFR targeted therapy.

First-trimester occupational exposures and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy among US nurses. Occup Med (Lond) 2023; 73:419-426. [PMID: 37587907 PMCID: PMC11009503 DOI: 10.1093/occmed/kqad089] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 08/18/2023] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited and conflicting data exist regarding the impact of first-trimester nursing occupational exposures on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). AIMS To investigate whether first-trimester night shift work, work hours and work-related activities are associated with HDP. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 6610 women within the Nurses' Health Study II. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the relation of occupational exposures to HDP. RESULTS Nine per cent of respondents reported an HDP in the index pregnancy (gestational hypertension: n = 354, 5%, preeclampsia: n = 222, 3%). First-trimester fixed or rotating night shift work was not significantly associated with gestational hypertension or preeclampsia compared to day shift work only. Compared to those working 21-40 h/week, working overtime (≥41 h/week) was not associated with gestational hypertension but was associated with 43% higher odds of preeclampsia (95% CI 1.02, 2.00). For part-time work (≤20 h/week), the OR was 0.76 (95% CI 0.56, 1.02) for gestational hypertension and 0.64 (95% CI 0.43, 0.97) for preeclampsia. The odds of preeclampsia were 3% higher per additional hour worked per week (95% CI 1.01-1.04). Compared to 0-4 h spent standing or walking per day, standing or walking ≥9 h daily was associated with 32% lower odds of gestational hypertension (95% CI 0.47, 0.99) but was not significantly associated with preeclampsia. Frequency of heavy lifting was not associated with either hypertensive disorder or pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS Among nurses, working overtime was associated with higher odds of preeclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Chondrosarcoma and synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint share overlapping clinical and histopathologic features. We aimed to identify CT and MR imaging features to differentiate chondrosarcoma from synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint. MATERIALS AND METHODS The CT and MR images of 12 and 35 patients with histopathologically confirmed chondrosarcoma and synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint, respectively, were retrospectively reviewed. Imaging features including lesion size, center, enhancement, destruction/sclerosis of surrounding bone, infiltration into the tendon of the lateral pterygoid muscle, calcification, periosteal reaction, and osteophyte formation were assessed. A comparison between chondrosarcoma and synovial chondromatosis was performed with a Student t test for quantitative variables and the Fisher exact test or linear-by-linear association test for qualitative variables. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the diagnostic performance for differentiation of chondrosarcoma and synovial chondromatosis based on a composite score obtained by assigning 1 point for each of 9 imaging features. RESULTS High-risk imaging features for chondrosarcoma were the following: lesion centered on the mandibular condyle, destruction of the mandibular condyle, no destruction/sclerosis of the articular eminence/glenoid fossa, infiltration into the tendon of the lateral pterygoid muscle, absent or stippled calcification, periosteal reaction, internal enhancement, and size of ≥30.5 mm. The best cutoff value to discriminate chondrosarcoma from synovial chondromatosis was the presence of any 4 of these high-risk imaging features, with an area under the curve of 0.986 and an accuracy of 95.8%. CONCLUSIONS CT and MR imaging features can distinguish chondrosarcoma from synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint with improved diagnostic performance when a subcombination of 9 imaging features is used.

Abstract
TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) is a key signalling component in the production of type-I interferons, which have essential antiviral activities, including against SARS-CoV-2. TBK1, and its homologue IκB kinase-ε (IKKε), can also induce pro-inflammatory responses that contribute to pathogen clearance. While initially protective, sustained engagement of type-I interferons is associated with damaging hyper-inflammation found in severe COVID-19 patients. The contribution of TBK1/IKKε signalling to these responses is unknown. Here we find that the small molecule idronoxil inhibits TBK1/IKKε signalling through destabilisation of TBK1/IKKε protein complexes. Treatment with idronoxil, or the small molecule inhibitor MRT67307, suppresses TBK1/IKKε signalling and attenuates cellular and molecular lung inflammation in SARS-CoV-2-challenged mice. Our findings additionally demonstrate that engagement of STING is not the major driver of these inflammatory responses and establish a critical role for TBK1/IKKε signalling in SARS-CoV-2 hyper-inflammation.

Abstract
We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry A_{LL} of direct-photon production in p[over →]+p[over →] collisions at sqrt[s]=510 GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity (|η|<0.25) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at sqrt[s]=510 GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range 0.02<x<0.08, with direct sensitivity to the sign of the gluon contribution.

Nogo receptor-Fc delivered by hematopoietic cells enhances neurorepair in a multiple sclerosis model. Brain Commun 2023; 5:fcad108. Abstract
Abstract
Nogo receptor 1 is the high affinity receptor for the potent myelin-associated inhibitory factors that make up part of the inflammatory extracellular milieu during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. Signaling through the Nogo receptor 1 complex has been shown to be associated with axonal degeneration in an animal model of multiple sclerosis and neuronal deletion of this receptor homologue, in a disease specific manner, is associated with preserving axons even in the context of neuroinflammation. The local delivery of Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc, a therapeutic fusion protein has been successfully applied as a treatment in animal models of spinal cord injury and glaucoma. As multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis exhibit large numbers of inflammatory cell infiltrates within the CNS lesions, we utilized transplantable hematopoietic stem cells as a cellular delivery method of the Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc fusion protein. We identified that CNS-infiltrating macrophages as the predominant immune-positive cell type that overexpressed myc-tagged Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc fusion protein at the peak stage of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. These differentiated phagocytes were predominant during the extensive demyelination and axonal damage, which are associated with the engulfment of the protein complex of Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc binding to myelin ligands. Importantly, mice transplanted with hematopoietic stem cells transduced with the lentiviral vector carrying Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc, recovered from the peak of neurological decline during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, exhibiting axonal regeneration and eventual remyelination in the white matter tracts. There were no immunomodulatory effects of the transplanted, genetically modified hematopoietic stem cells on immune cell lineages of recipient female mice induced with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. We propose that cellular delivery of Nogo receptor(1-310)-Fc fusion protein through genetically modified hematopoietic stem cells, can modulate multifocal experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis lesions and potentiate neurological recovery.

Sustained effect on diet quality of a self-care intervention to reduce cardiovascular disease risk among informal rural caregivers of people with chronic illnesses: does health literacy matter? Eur Heart J 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Background/Introduction
Rural caregivers of those with chronic illnesses have higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk than urban caregivers. Diet is a major lifestyle factor that contributes to CVD risk. However, interventions are often not constructed with health literacy in mind. We previously found a moderation effect of health literacy on short-term (4-month) diet quality from a self-care intervention to reduce cardiovascular disease risk (RICHH) among rural caregivers. The RICHH intervention was designed to be equally effective in caregivers with marginal or adequate health literacy.
Purpose
To compare the impact of RICHH intervention on 12-month diet quality in rural caregivers with marginal versus adequate health literacy.
Methods
A total of 296 rural caregivers (54.5±13.7 years old, 76% female) of individuals with chronic illnesses participated. The newest vital sign (NVS) and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) were used to determine health literacy and diet quality, respectively. The NVS was dichotomized using a cutoff score of 4. The HEI-2015 was computed based on food frequency questionnaires at baseline, 4-month, and 12-month. The RICHH intervention was delivered using video conferencing technology by nurse interventionists once a week for 12 weeks followed by bi-weekly and monthly booster sessions. A piecewise linear mixed-effect model, controlling for age, education, smoking status, and perceived stress, was used to evaluate the impact of the intervention on diet quality between the two health literacy groups.
Results
There was a significant difference in improvement in the HEI-2015 total scores at 4 months between control and intervention in the marginal health literacy group (beta estimate = 1.56, SE=0.74, P=0.039) but not in the adequate health literacy group (beta estimate = 0.27, SE=0.38, P=0.475). The improvement in the marginal health literacy group was sustained at 12-months (beta estimate = 8.12, SE=3.57, P=0.022).
Conclusions
The results of our study indicate that an intervention designed to address health literacy is effective in producing a sustained improvement in diet quality to reduce CVD risk in rural caregivers with marginal health literacy.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of dual-layer spectral detector CT(SDCT) in preoperative prediction of lymph node (LN) metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods: From January 2019 to January 2021, the clinical and imaging data of 130 gastric cancer patients(93 males and 37 females, aged from 37 to 84 years)confirmed by pathology in the Zhongshan hospital of Xiamen University were retrospectively collected. According to the status of lymph node metastasis, those patients were divided into metastatic LNs group (n=104) and nonmetastatic LNs group (n=26). The maximum diameter of gastric cancer on spectral CT images, CT Values of lesions in 40, 50, 60, 70. KeV monoenergetic image of arterial and Venous phase (CT40 keV, CT50 keV, CT60 keV, CT70 keV), iodine concentration (IC) and effective atomic number (Zeff) were measured, then the normalized IC(NIC) and spectral curve(K(40-70)) value were calculated. The differences of each parameter derived from spectral CT between the two groups were compared, and a logistic regression model was constructed. The ROC curves and area under the curve (AUC) were conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each parameter and Delong test was used to compare the difference of each AUC. Results: Compared to nonmetastatic LNs group, metastatic LNs group had higher maximum diameter of tumor, CT40 keV, CT50 keV, CT60 keV, CT70 keV, IC, NIC, Zeff, and K(40-70) values on venous phase (the representative parameter is Zeff: 8.4 (8.2, 8.5) vs 8.2 (8.1, 8.3)) (all P<0.05). The proportion of patients with lower histology differentiated degree, higher T grade and positive carcino embryonic antigen (CEA)were higher than that in nonmetastatic LNs (the representative parameter was CEA: 34.6%(36/104) vs 7.7%(2/26) (all P<0.05). The regression model constructed by CEA and Zeff had the highest predictive value in predicting metastatic LNs, with an AUC of 0.835(0.759-0.894), sensitivity and specificity of 83.65% and 73.08%, respectively. Conclusion: SDCT quantitative parameters on venous phase and CEA facilitate the accurate prediction of metastatic LNs in patients with gastric cancer, and the multi-parameter regression model has the highest diagnostic performance.

Abstract
Background: Although early-stage lung cancer has increased owing to the introduction of screening programs, high recurrence rate remains a critical concern. We aimed to explore biomarkers related to the prognosis of surgically resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: In this retrospective study, we collected medical records of patients with NSCLC and matched tissue microarray blocks from surgical specimens. Semiquantitative immunohistochemistry was performed for measuring the expression level of fibroblast activation protein-alpha (FAP-α), Jagged-1 (JAG1), and CUB-domain-containing protein 1 (CDCP1). Results: A total of 453 patients who underwent complete resection between January 2011 and February 2012 were enrolled; 55.2% patients had stage I NSCLC, and 31.1% presented squamous cell carcinoma. Disease stage was a significant risk factor for recurrence and death, and age ≥ 65 years and male sex were associated with poor overall survival. FAP-a and JaG1 were not related to survivals, while CDCP1-expressing patients exhibited poor disease-free and overall survival. Moreover, CDCP1 expression in stage I NSCLC was significantly associated with recurrence. Conclusions: Old age, male sex, and high pathological stage were poor prognostic factors in patients with NSCLC who underwent surgical resection. Furthermore, CDCP1 expression could serve as a biomarker for poor prognosis in stage I NSCLC.

Abstract
Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton. This is the first time direct photons have been used as a probe of spin-momentum correlations at RHIC. The uncertainties on the results are a 50-fold improvement with respect to those of the one prior measurement for the same observable, from the Fermilab E704 experiment. These results constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations in transversely polarized protons.

Liposomal irinotecan plus fluorouracil/leucovorin versus FOLFIRINOX as the second-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer: a multicenter retrospective study of the Korean Cancer Study Group (KCSG). ESMO Open 2021; 6:100049. [PMID: 33578192 PMCID: PMC7878976 DOI: 10.1016/j.esmoop.2021.100049] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/23/2020] [Revised: 12/31/2020] [Accepted: 01/03/2021] [Indexed: 12/16/2022] Open
Abstract
Background There is no clear consensus on the recommended second-line treatment for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who have disease progression following gemcitabine-based therapy. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of liposomal irinotecan (nal-IRI) plus fluorouracil/leucovorin (FL) and FOLFIRINOX (fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin) in patients who had failed on the first-line gemcitabine-based therapy. Patients and methods From January 2015 to August 2019, 378 patients with MPC who had received nal-IRI/FL (n = 104) or FOLFIRINOX (n = 274) as second-line treatment across 11 institutions were included in this retrospective study. Results There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between groups, except age and first-line regimens. With a median follow-up of 6 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 3.7 months with nal-IRI/FL versus 4.6 months with FOLFIRINOX (P = 0.44). Median overall survival (OS) was 7.7 months with nal-IRI/FL versus 9.7 months with FOLFRINOX (P = 0.13). There was no significant difference in PFS and OS between the two regimens in the univariate and multivariate analyses. The subgroup analysis revealed that younger age (<70 years) was associated with better OS with FOLFIRINOX. In contrast, older age (≥70 years) was associated with better survival outcomes with nal-IRI/FL. Adverse events were manageable with both regimens; however, the incidence of grade 3 or higher neutropenia and peripheral neuropathy was higher in patients treated with FOLFIRINOX than with nal-IRI/FL. Conclusions Second-line nal-IRI/FL and FOLFIRINOX showed similar effectiveness outcomes after progression following first-line gemcitabine-based therapy. Age could be the determining factor for choosing the appropriate second-line therapy. This multicenter retrospective study investigated nal-IRI/FL and FOLFIRINOX outcomes after gemcitabine-based therapy. We found no significant differences in outcome between nal-IRI/FL and FOLFIRINOX treatment. Both regimens were well tolerated; however, neutropenia and peripheral neuropathy were more frequent with FOLFIRINOX. Age (cut-off, 70 years) showed differential efficacy between chemotherapy regimens.

Light quantum control of persisting Higgs modes in iron-based superconductors. Nat Commun 2021; 12:258. Abstract
The Higgs mechanism, i.e., spontaneous symmetry breaking of the quantum vacuum, is a cross-disciplinary principle, universal for understanding dark energy, antimatter and quantum materials, from superconductivity to magnetism. Unlike one-band superconductors (SCs), a conceptually distinct Higgs amplitude mode can arise in multi-band, unconventional superconductors via strong interband Coulomb interaction, but is yet to be accessed. Here we discover such hybrid Higgs mode and demonstrate its quantum control by light in iron-based high-temperature SCs. Using terahertz (THz) two-pulse coherent spectroscopy, we observe a tunable amplitude mode coherent oscillation of the complex order parameter from coupled lower and upper bands. The nonlinear dependence of the hybrid Higgs mode on the THz driving fields is distinct from any known SC results: we observe a large reversible modulation of resonance strength, yet with a persisting mode frequency. Together with quantum kinetic modeling of a hybrid Higgs mechanism, distinct from charge-density fluctuations and without invoking phonons or disorder, our result provides compelling evidence for a light-controlled coupling between the electron and hole amplitude modes assisted by strong interband quantum entanglement. Such light-control of Higgs hybridization can be extended to probe many-body entanglement and hidden symmetries in other complex systems. A collective excitation called Higgs mode may arise in multi-band superconductors via strong interband interaction, but it is yet to be accessed. Here, the authors observe a tunable coherent amplitude oscillation of the order parameter in Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2, suggesting appearance and control of the Higgs mode by light tuning interband interaction.

A randomized phase III trial comparing adjuvant single-agent S1, S-1 with oxaliplatin, and postoperative chemoradiation with S-1 and oxaliplatin in patients with node-positive gastric cancer after D2 resection: the ARTIST 2 trial ☆. Ann Oncol 2020; 32:368-374. [PMID: 33278599 DOI: 10.1016/j.annonc.2020.11.017] [Citation(s) in RCA: 129] [Impact Index Per Article: 32.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/11/2020] [Revised: 11/22/2020] [Accepted: 11/23/2020] [Indexed: 12/14/2022] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Adjuvant chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy are some of the standards of care for gastric cancer (GC). The Adjuvant chemoRadioTherapy In Stomach Tumors (ARTIST) 2 trial compares two adjuvant chemotherapy regimens and chemoradiotherapy in patients with D2-resected, stage II or III, node-positive GC. PATIENTS AND METHODS The ARTIST 2 compared, in a 1:1:1 ratio, three adjuvant regimens: oral S-1 (40-60 mg twice daily 4 weeks on/2 weeks off) for 1 year, S-1 (2 weeks on/1 week off) plus oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 every 3 weeks (SOX) for 6 months, and SOX plus chemoradiotherapy 45 Gy (SOXRT). Randomization was stratified according to surgery type (total or subtotal gastrectomy), pathologic stage (II or III), and Lauren histologic classification (diffuse or intestinal/mixed). The primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS) at 3 years; a reduction of 33% in the hazard ratio (HR) for DFS with SOX or SOXRT, when compared with S-1, was considered clinically meaningful. The trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT0176146). RESULTS A total of 546 patients were recruited between February 2013 and January 2018 with 182, 181, and 183 patients in the S-1, SOX, and SOXRT arms, respectively. Median follow-up period was 47 months, with 178 DFS events observed. Estimated 3-year DFS rates were 64.8%, 74.3%, and 72.8% in the S-1, SOX, and SOXRT arms, respectively. HR for DFS in the control arm (S-1) was shorter than that in the SOX and SOXRT arms: S-1 versus SOX, 0.692 (P = 0.042) and S-1 versus SOXRT, 0.724 (P = 0.074). No difference in DFS was found between SOX and SOXRT (HR 0.971; P = 0.879). Adverse events were as anticipated in each arm, and were generally well-tolerated and manageable. CONCLUSIONS In patients with curatively D2-resected, stage II/III, node-positive GC, adjuvant SOX or SOXRT was effective in prolonging DFS, when compared with S-1 monotherapy. The addition of radiotherapy to SOX did not significantly reduce the rate of recurrence after D2 gastrectomy.

Abstract
Background Treatment of human lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) using current targeted therapies is limited because of their diverse somatic mutations without any specific dominant driver mutations. These mutational diversities preventing the use of common targeted therapies or the combination of available therapeutic modalities would require a preclinical animal model of this tumor to acquire improved clinical responses. Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models have been recognized as a potentially useful preclinical model for personalized precision medicine. However, whether the use of LUSC PDX models would be appropriate enough for clinical application is still controversial. Methods In the process of developing PDX models from Korean patients with LUSC, the authors investigated the factors influencing the successful initial engraftment of tumors in NOD scid gamma mice and the retainability of the pathological and genomic characteristics of the parental patient tumors in PDX tumors. Conclusions The authors have developed 62 LUSC PDX models that retained the pathological and genomic features of parental patient tumors, which could be used in preclinical and co-clinical studies. Trial registration Tumor samples were obtained from 139 patients with LUSC between November 2014 and January 2019. All the patients provided signed informed consents. This study was approved by the institutional review board (IRB) of Samsung Medical Center (2018-03-110)

Terahertz Second-Harmonic Generation from Lightwave Acceleration of Symmetry-Breaking Nonlinear Supercurrents. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 124:207003. Abstract
We report terahertz (THz) light-induced second harmonic generation, in superconductors with inversion symmetry that forbid even-order nonlinearities. The THz second harmonic emission vanishes above the superconductor critical temperature and arises from precession of twisted Anderson pseudospins at a multicycle, THz driving frequency that is not allowed by equilibrium symmetry. We explain the microscopic physics by a dynamical symmetry breaking principle at sub-THz-cycle by using quantum kinetic modeling of the interplay between strong THz-lightwave nonlinearity and pulse propagation. The resulting nonzero integrated pulse area inside the superconductor leads to light-induced nonlinear supercurrents due to subcycle Cooper pair acceleration, in contrast to dc-biased superconductors, which can be controlled by the band structure and THz driving field below the superconducting gap.

Scattering Studies with Low-Energy Kaon-Proton Femtoscopy in Proton-Proton Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 124:092301. Abstract
The study of the strength and behavior of the antikaon-nucleon (K[over ¯]N) interaction constitutes one of the key focuses of the strangeness sector in low-energy quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this Letter a unique high-precision measurement of the strong interaction between kaons and protons, close and above the kinematic threshold, is presented. The femtoscopic measurements of the correlation function at low pair-frame relative momentum of (K^{+}p⊕K^{-}p[over ¯]) and (K^{-}p⊕K^{+}p[over ¯]) pairs measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=5, 7, and 13 TeV are reported. A structure observed around a relative momentum of 58 MeV/c in the measured correlation function of (K^{-}p⊕K^{+}p[over ¯]) with a significance of 4.4σ constitutes the first experimental evidence for the opening of the (K[over ¯]^{0}n⊕K^{0}n[over ¯]) isospin breaking channel due to the mass difference between charged and neutral kaons. The measured correlation functions have been compared to Jülich and Kyoto models in addition to the Coulomb potential. The high-precision data at low relative momenta presented in this work prove femtoscopy to be a powerful complementary tool to scattering experiments and provide new constraints above the K[over ¯]N threshold for low-energy QCD chiral models.

Measurement of ϒ(1S) Elliptic Flow at Forward Rapidity in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:192301. Abstract
The first measurement of the ϒ(1S) elliptic flow coefficient (v_{2}) is performed at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4) in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are obtained with the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum (p_{T}) up to 15 GeV/c in the 5%-60% centrality interval. The measured ϒ(1S)v_{2} is consistent with 0 and with the small positive values predicted by transport models within uncertainties. The v_{2} coefficient in 2<p_{T}<15 GeV/c is lower than that of inclusive J/ψ mesons in the same p_{T} interval by 2.6 standard deviations. These results, combined with earlier suppression measurements, are in agreement with a scenario in which the ϒ(1S) production in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies is dominated by dissociation limited to the early stage of the collision, whereas in the J/ψ case there is substantial experimental evidence of an additional regeneration component.

Investigations of Anisotropic Flow Using Multiparticle Azimuthal Correlations in pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:142301. Abstract
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients (v_{n}) and their cross-correlations using two- and multiparticle cumulant methods are reported in collisions of pp at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, p-Pb at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, Xe-Xe at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV, and Pb-Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The multiplicity dependence of v_{n} is studied in a very wide range from 20 to 3000 particles produced in the midrapidity region |η|<0.8 for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<3.0 GeV/c. An ordering of the coefficients v_{2}>v_{3}>v_{4} is found in pp and p-Pb collisions, similar to that seen in large collision systems, while a weak v_{2} multiplicity dependence is observed relative to nucleus-nucleus collisions in the same multiplicity range. Using a novel subevent method, v_{2} measured with four-particle cumulants is found to be compatible with that from six-particle cumulants in pp and p-Pb collisions. The magnitude of the correlation between v_{n}^{2} and v_{m}^{2}, evaluated with the symmetric cumulants SC(m,n) is observed to be positive at all multiplicities for v_{2} and v_{4}, while for v_{2} and v_{3} it is negative and changes sign for multiplicities below 100, which may indicate a different v_{n} fluctuation pattern in this multiplicity range. The observed long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlations in high multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions can neither be described by pythia 8 nor by impact-parameter-Glasma, music, and ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model calculations, and hence, provide new insights into the understanding of collective effects in small collision systems.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
No study has reported the relationship between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in self-reported never-smokers verified by nicotine metabolite.
Purpose
The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between SHS exposure and MetS in self-reported and cotinine-verified never-smokers.
Methods
A total of 118,609 self-reported and cotinine-verified never-smokers (38,385 men; age 34.8±7.1 years) who participated in Kangbuk Samsung Health Study (KSHS) and Kangbuk Samsung Cohort study (KSCS) between 2011 and 2016 were included. Cotinine-verified never-smoker was defined as individuals having urinary cotinine <50 ng/mL. SHS exposure was defined as having experienced passive smoking indoors at home or the workplace.
Results
The prevalence of SHS exposure in the overall population was 22.6%, with rates of 27.4% for males and 20.3% for females (p<0.001). The overall prevalence of MetS was 6.8%; the prevalence in males was higher than that in females (10.7% versus 4.9%, p<0.001). In both males and females, the prevalence of MetS in group with SHS exposure was higher than that in group without SHS exposure (11.3% versus 10.4%, p=0.010 for males; 5.8% versus 4.6%, p<0.001 for females). However, there was significant gender interaction for the relationships between SHS exposure and MetS (p for interaction=0.010). A multivariate regression model was adjusted for the baseline variables including age, body mass index, frequency of alcohol drinking and vigorous exercise, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and hsCRP. The results showed that SHS exposure only in females was associated with MetS (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.17 [1.06, 1.29] for females; 1.02 [0.94, 1.11] for males). In particular, females with SHS exposure of ≥1 hours/day, ≥3 times/week, and ≥10 years increased the prevalence of MetS compared to those without SHS exposure (1.21 [1.02, 1.45], 1.30 [1.14, 1.49], and 1.12 [0.99, 1.28], respectively.
Conclusions
This study showed that the SHS exposure in females was significantly associated with MetS in self-reported never-smokers with low urinary cotinine levels (<50 ng/mL), suggesting that more active anti-smoking programs in the home and public are needed to reduce the risk of MetS.

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between SHS exposure and diabetes mellitus in self-reported and cotinine-verified never-smokers.
Methods
A total of 131,724 self-reported and cotinine-verified never-smokers (42,681 men; age 35.0±7.1 years) enrolled in Kangbuk Samsung Health Study (KSHS) and Kangbuk Samsung Cohort study (KSCS) between 2011 and 2016 were included. Cotinine-verified never-smoker was defined as individuals having urinary cotinine <50 ng/mL. SHS exposure was defined as having experienced passive smoking indoors at home or the workplace. Diabetes mellitus was defined as having a fasting blood glucose level of ≥7.0mmol/L, hemoglobin A1C ≥6.5% or taking anti-diabetic medication(s).
Results
The frequency of diabetes mellitus in the overall population was 1.6%; the frequency in males was higher than that in females (2.2% versus 1.3%, p<0.001). The overall frequency of SHS exposure was 22.9%, with rates of 27.6% for males and 20.7% for females (p<0.001). The frequency of diabetes mellitus in group with SHS exposure was higher than that in group without SHS exposure only in females (1.8% versus 1.2%, p<0.001 for females; 2.2% versus 2.2%, p=0.956 for males). There was significant gender interaction for the relationships between SHS exposure and diabetes mellitus (p for interaction <0.001). A multivariate regression model was adjusted for the baseline variables including age, waist circumference, body mass index, frequency of alcohol drinking and vigorous exercise, systolic blood pressure, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and hsCRP. Only in females, SHS exposure was significantly associated with diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 1.40 [1.20, 1.65] for females; 1.00 [0.85, 1.19] for males). Higher frequency and longer duration of SHS exposure were also significantly associated with diabetes mellitus (p<0.001) for all trends). In particular, females with SHS exposure of ≥1 hours/day, ≥3 times/week, and ≥10 years increased the risk of diabetes mellitus 51–64% above that for those without SHS exposure (1.64 [1.25, 2.13], 1.51 [1.21, 1.87], and 1.59 [1.30, 1.95], respectively.
Conclusions
This study showed that the SHS exposure in females was significantly associated with diabetes mellitus in self-reported never-smokers verified by urinary cotinine and this association was proportional to the frequency and duration of SHS exposure. These findings suggest the importance of banning smoking in the home and public to reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
We report on the nuclear dependence of transverse single-spin asymmetries (TSSAs) in the production of positively charged hadrons in polarized p^{↑}+p, p^{↑}+Al, and p^{↑}+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The measurements have been performed at forward rapidity (1.4<η<2.4) over the range of transverse momentum (1.8<p_{T}<7.0 GeV/c) and Feynman x (0.1<x_{F}<0.2). We observed positive asymmetries for positively charged hadrons in p^{↑}+p collisions, and significantly reduced asymmetries in p^{↑}+A collisions. These results reveal a nuclear dependence of TSSAs for charged-hadron production in a regime where perturbative techniques are applicable. These results provide new opportunities to use p^{↑}+A collisions as a tool to investigate the rich phenomena behind TSSAs in hadronic collisions and to use TSSAs as a new handle in studying small-system collisions.

First Observation of an Attractive Interaction between a Proton and a Cascade Baryon. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:112002. Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental observation of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a multistrange baryon (hyperon) Ξ^{-}. The result is extracted from two-particle correlations of combined p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} pairs measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The measured correlation function is compared with the prediction obtained assuming only an attractive Coulomb interaction and a standard deviation in the range [3.6, 5.3] is found. Since the measured p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} correlation is significantly enhanced with respect to the Coulomb prediction, the presence of an additional, strong, attractive interaction is evident. The data are compatible with recent lattice calculations by the HAL-QCD Collaboration, with a standard deviation in the range [1.8, 3.7]. The lattice potential predicts a shallow repulsive Ξ^{-} interaction within pure neutron matter and this implies stiffer equations of state for neutron-rich matter including hyperons. Implications of the strong interaction for the modeling of neutron stars are discussed.

Abstract
The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.4<p_{T}<3 GeV/c) direct-photon yields from Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable dN_{ch}/dη reveals that the low-momentum (>1 GeV/c) direct-photon yield dN_{γ}^{dir}/dη is a smooth function of dN_{ch}/dη and can be well described as proportional to (dN_{ch}/dη)^{α} with α≈1.25. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different A+A collision systems. At a given beam energy, the scaling also holds for high p_{T} (>5 GeV/c), but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional sqrt[s_{NN}]-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

Capecitabine plus oxaliplatin versus gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin as first-line therapy for advanced biliary tract cancers: a multicenter, open-label, randomized, phase III, noninferiority trial. Abstract
BACKGROUND Capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (XELOX) has shown modest activity and tolerable toxicity in a phase II trial for biliary tract cancers (BTCs). Meanwhile, gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin (GEMOX) has been the reference arm in recent phase II and III trials for BTCs. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of XELOX versus GEMOX as first-line therapy for advanced BCTs. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this open-label, randomized, phase III, noninferiority trial, we randomly selected patients with metastatic BCTs to receive GEMOX (gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, and oxaliplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 1) or XELOX (capecitabine 1000 mg/m2, twice daily, on days 1-14 and oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1) as first-line treatment, given every 3 weeks, totaling eight cycles. The primary end point was to prove the noninferiority of XELOX to GEMOX in terms of 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) rate. RESULTS In total, 114 patients randomly received GEMOX and 108 randomly received XELOX. The median PFS was 5.3 months for the GEMOX group and 5.8 months for the XELOX group. The 6-month PFS rate was 44.5% for the GEMOX group and 46.7% for the XELOX group. The 95% confidence interval of the 6-month PFS rate difference between both groups was -12% to 16%, meeting the criteria for noninferiority of XELOX to GEMOX. There was no difference in objective response (P=0.171) and median overall survival (P=0.131) between both groups. The most common grade three to four adverse events were neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. No patient died of treatment-related causes. The XELOX group had significantly lower frequencies of hospital visits than the GEMOX group (P<0.001). CONCLUSION XELOX showed significant noninferiority to GEMOX in terms of 6-month PFS rate. Thus, XELOX could be an alternative first-line treatment of BCTs. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (number NCT01470443).

Angular correlations between heavy-flavor decay electrons and charged particles at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) are measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The analysis is carried out for the 0%-20% (high) and 60%-100% (low) multiplicity ranges. The jet contribution in the correlation distribution from high-multiplicity events is removed by subtracting the distribution from low-multiplicity events. An azimuthal modulation remains after removing the jet contribution, similar to previous observations in two-particle angular correlation measurements for light-flavor hadrons. A Fourier decomposition of the modulation results in a positive second-order coefficient (v_{2}) for heavy-flavor decay electrons in the transverse momentum interval 1.5<p_{T}<4 GeV/c in high-multiplicity events, with a significance larger than 5σ. The results are compared with those of charged particles at midrapidity and those of inclusive muons at forward rapidity. The v_{2} measurement of open heavy-flavor particles at midrapidity in small collision systems could provide crucial information to help interpret the anisotropies observed in such systems.

Cryopreservation of Endangered Wild Species, Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae Kitam, Using Droplet-Vitrification Procedure. CRYO LETTERS 2019; 40:113-122. Abstract
BACKGROUND Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae Kitam is an endemic and endangered species in urgent need of a comprehensive conservation strategy. OBJECTIVE To develop an efficient cryopreservation protocol using in vitro shoot tips to complement traditional conservation approaches in case seeds are not available or insufficient for conservation programs. METHODS Shoot tips of in vitro plants were cryopreserved using a droplet-vitrification method following improvement of pre-culture, osmoprotection, vitrification solution (VS), unloading and post-culture treatments. The starting protocol included step-wise pre-culture with 10% and 17.5% sucrose for 55 h and 17 h, respectively, followed by osmoprotection with C4-35% (17.5% glycerol + 17.5% sucrose) for 30 min, and cryoprotection with B5-80% (40% glycerol + 40% sucrose) for 60 min. RESULTS Shoot tips of A. altaicus were found to be moderately sensitive to the osmotic stress. Pre-culture and osmoprotection were not critical for the regeneration of cryopreserved explants when either of these treatments was applied. Osmoprotection with C4-35% on ice for 60 min followed by cryoprotection with A3-80%, a modified and diluted PVS2, on ice for 60 min resulted in the highest (65.3%) regeneration of cryopreserved shoot tips. Among alternative VSs tested, A3-80% and B5-80% were superior to PVS2 and PVS3 used under the same conditions. Step-wise recovery of shoot tips on ammonium-free medium followed by GA3-containing medium and medium without growth regulators were critical for the normal regeneration of both VS-treated and cryopreserved shoot tips. CONCLUSIONS Cryopreservation of in vitro shoot tips using droplet-vitrification was developed as a complementary conservation approach for A. altaicus. Adjustment of the composition of regrowth media depending on recovery stage was important for the regeneration of healthy plants from cryopreserved shoot tips.

Abstract
Asymmetric nuclear collisions of p+Al, p+Au, d+Au, and ^{3}He+Au at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production dN_{ch}/dη in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow v_{2} over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

3',4',7,8-Tetrahydroxyflavone inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclast formation and bone resorption. DIE PHARMAZIE 2018; 72:161-166. Abstract
Osteoclasts, which are specialized bone multinuclear cells, are responsible for bone lytic diseases such as osteoporosis. 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone is a flavonoid from Acacia confusa. In the present study, we found that 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone markedly inhibited receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastic differentiation from mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs). 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone also reduced the mRNA expression levels of osteoclastic marker genes including the calcitonin receptor (CTR) and cathepsin K. In addition, 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone decreased the bone resorption activity of osteoclasts on dentin slices. We found that 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone inhibited RANKL-induced expression of c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cells c1 (NFATc1), a key transcription factor of osteoclast differentiation. Furthermore, ectopic overexpression of a constitutively active form of NFATc1 completely rescued the anti-osteoclastogenic effect of 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone, suggesting that the anti-osteoclastogenic effect was mainly attributed to the reduction in NFATc1 expression. Taken together, our data suggest that 3',4',7,8-tetrahydroxyflavone inhibits osteoclast differentiation and bone loss and may therefore be considered a promising drug candidate for treating or preventing bone-lytic diseases.

Abstract
'Sudden' quantum quench and prethermalization have become a cross-cutting theme for discovering emergent states of matter1-4. Yet this remains challenging in electron matter5-9, especially superconductors10-14. The grand question of what is hidden underneath superconductivity (SC) 15 appears universal, but poorly understood. Here we reveal a long-lived gapless quantum phase of prethermalized quasiparticles (QPs) after a single-cycle terahertz (THz) quench of a Nb3Sn SC gap. Its conductivity spectra is characterized by a sharp coherent peak and a vanishing scattering rate that decreases almost linearly towards zero frequency, which is most pronounced around the full depletion of the condensate and absent for a high-frequency pump. Above a critical pump threshold, such a QP phase with coherent transport and memory persists as an unusual prethermalization plateau, without relaxation to normal and SC thermal states for an order of magnitude longer than the QP recombination and thermalization times. Switching to this metastable 'quantum QP fluid' signals non-thermal quench of coupled SC and charge-density-wave (CDW)-like orders and hints quantum control beneath the SC.

Abstract
The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v_{2} of prompt D^{0}, D^{+}, D^{*+}, and D_{s}^{+} mesons was measured in midcentral (30%-50% centrality class) Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, in the transverse momentum interval 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. The measured D-meson v_{2} has similar values as that of charged pions. The D_{s}^{+} v_{2}, measured for the first time, is found to be compatible with that of nonstrange D mesons. The measurements are compared with theoretical calculations of charm-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium and have the potential to constrain medium parameters.

Abstract
Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic p/d/^{3}He+Au, p+Pb, and even p+p collisions show surprising collective signatures. Here, we present beam-energy-scan measurements of two-, four-, and six-particle angular correlations in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of two- and four-particle angular correlations in p+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. We find the four-particle cumulant to be real valued for d+Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the four-particle cumulant in p+Au has the opposite sign as that in d+Au. Further, we find that the six-particle cumulant agrees with the four-particle cumulant in d+Au collisions at 200 GeV, indicating that nonflow effects are subdominant. These observations provide strong evidence that the correlations originate from the initial geometric configuration, which is then translated into the momentum distribution for all particles, commonly referred to as collectivity.

Abstract
During 2015, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of transversely polarized protons with Au and Al nuclei for the first time, enabling the exploration of transverse-single-spin asymmetries with heavy nuclei. Large single-spin asymmetries in very forward neutron production have been previously observed in transversely polarized p+p collisions at RHIC, and the existing theoretical framework that was successful in describing the single-spin asymmetry in p+p collisions predicts only a moderate atomic-mass-number (A) dependence. In contrast, the asymmetries observed at RHIC in p+A collisions showed a surprisingly strong A dependence in inclusive forward neutron production. The observed asymmetry in p+Al collisions is much smaller, while the asymmetry in p+Au collisions is a factor of 3 larger in absolute value and of opposite sign. The interplay of different neutron production mechanisms is discussed as a possible explanation of the observed A dependence.

Association of Long-Term Adherence to the MIND Diet with Cognitive Function and Cognitive Decline in American Women. J Nutr Health Aging 2018; 22:222-229. Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is increasing attention for dietary patterns as a potential strategy to prevent cognitive decline. We examined the association between adherence to a recently developed Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet with cognitive function and cognitive decline, taking into account the interaction between the apolipoprotein E ε4 genotype and the MIND diet. DESIGN Population-based prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 16,058 older women aged 70 and over from the Nurses' Health Study. MEASUREMENTS Dietary intake was assessed five times between 1984 and 1998 with a 116-item Food Frequency Questionnaire. The MIND score includes ten brain-healthy foods and five unhealthy foods. Cognition was assessed four times by telephone from 1995 to 2001 (baseline) with the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status (TICS) and by calculating composite scores of verbal memory and global cognition. Linear regression modelling and linear mixed modelling were used to examine the associations of adherence to the MIND diet with average cognitive function and cognitive change over six years, respectively. RESULTS Greater long-term adherence to the MIND diet was associated with a better verbal memory score (multivariable-adjusted mean differences between extreme MIND quintiles=0.04 (95%CI 0.01-0.07), p-trend=0.006), but not with cognitive decline over 6 years in global cognition, verbal memory or TICS. CONCLUSION Long-term adherence to the MIND diet was moderately associated with better verbal memory in later life. Future studies should address this association within populations at greater risk of cognitive decline.

J/ψ Elliptic Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 119:242301. Abstract
We report a precise measurement of the J/ψ elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed at midrapidity (|y|<0.9) in the dielectron decay channel and at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4.0) in the dimuon channel, both down to zero transverse momentum. At forward rapidity, the elliptic flow v_{2} of the J/ψ is studied as a function of the transverse momentum and centrality. A positive v_{2} is observed in the transverse momentum range 2<p_{T}<8 GeV/c in the three centrality classes studied and confirms with higher statistics our earlier results at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV in semicentral collisions. At midrapidity, the J/ψ v_{2} is investigated as a function of the transverse momentum in semicentral collisions and found to be in agreement with the measurements at forward rapidity. These results are compared to transport model calculations. The comparison supports the idea that at low p_{T} the elliptic flow of the J/ψ originates from the thermalization of charm quarks in the deconfined medium but suggests that additional mechanisms might be missing in the models.

Preconditioning with far-infrared irradiation enhances proliferation, cell survival, and migration of rat bone marrow-derived stem cells via CXCR4-ERK pathways. Sci Rep 2017; 7:13718. Abstract
Far-infrared radiation (FIR) has been shown to exert positive effects on the cardiovascular system. However, the biological effects of FIR on bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) are not understood. In the present study, BMSCs were isolated from rat femur bone marrow and cultured in vitro. To investigate the effects of an FIR generator with an energy flux of 0.13 mW/cm2 on rat BMSCs, survival of BMSCs was measured by crystal violet staining, and cell proliferation was additionally measured using Ez-Cytox cell viability, EdU, and Brd U assays. FIR preconditioning was found to significantly increase BMSC proliferation and survival against H2O2. The scratch and transwell migration assays showed that FIR preconditioning resulted in an increase in BMSC migration. qRT-PCR and Western blot analyses demonstrated that FIR upregulated Nanog, Sox2, c-Kit, Nkx2.5, and CXCR4 at both the mRNA and protein levels. Consistent with these observations, PD98059 (an ERK inhibitor) and AMD3100 (a CXCR4 inhibitor) prevented the activation of CXCR4/ERK and blocked the cell proliferation and migration induced by FIR. Overall, these findings provide the first evidence that FIR confers a real and significant benefit on the preconditioning of BMSCs, and might lead to novel strategies for improving BMSC therapy for cardiac ischemia.

Anomalous Evolution of the Near-Side Jet Peak Shape in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 119:102301. Abstract
The measurement of two-particle angular correlations is a powerful tool to study jet quenching in a p_{T} region inaccessible by direct jet identification. In these measurements pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) differences are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher p_{T} trigger particle (1<p_{T,trig}<8 GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low p_{T} is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4 GeV/c, while in the Δφ direction the peak is almost independent of centrality. For the 10% most central collisions and 1<p_{T,assoc}<2 GeV/c, 1<p_{T,trig}<3 GeV/c a novel feature is observed: a depletion develops around the center of the peak. The results are compared to pp collisions at the same center of mass energy and ampt model simulations. The comparison to the investigated models suggests that the broadening and the development of the depletion is connected to the strength of radial and longitudinal flow.

Cardioprotective effects of PKG activation by soluble GC activator, BAY 60-2770, in ischemia-reperfusion-injured rat hearts. PLoS One 2017; 12:e0180207. Abstract
Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) has been suggested as a therapeutic target for cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Until now, the molecular mechanism of BAY 60-2770, a sGC activator, in cardiac IR injury has not been assessed. To identify the cardioprotective effects of BAY 60-2770 in IR-injured rat hearts, IR injury was established by occlusion of LAD for 40 min and reperfusion for 7 days, and the effects of BAY 60-2770 on myocardial protection were assessed by echocardiography and TTC staining. 5 nM and 5 μM of BAY 60-2770 were perfused into isolated rat hearts in a Langendorff system. After 10- or 30-min reperfusion with BAY 60-2770, cGMP and cAMP concentrations and PKG activation status were examined. Hearts were also perfused with 1 μM KT5823 or 100 μM 5-HD in conjunction with 5 nM Bay 60-2770 to evaluate the protective role of PKG. Mitochondrial oxidative stress was investigated under hypoxia-reoxygenation in H9c2 cells. In IR-injured rat hearts, BAY 60-2770 oral administration reduced infarct size by TTC staining and improved left ventricular function by echocardiography. Tissue samples from BAY 60-2770-perfused hearts had approximately two-fold higher cGMP levels. BAY 60-2770 increased PKG activity in the myocardium, and the reduced infarct area by BAY 60-2770 was abrogated by KT-5823 in isolated myocardium. In H9c2 cardiac myoblasts, hypoxia-reoxygenation-mediated mitochondrial ROS generation was diminished with BAY 60-2770 treatment, but was recovered by pretreatment with KT-5823. BAY 60-2770 demonstrated a protective effect against cardiac IR injury via mitoKATP opening and decreased mitoROS by PKG activation. BAY 60-2770 has a protective effect against cardiac IR injury via mitoKATP opening and decreased mitoROS by PKG activation. These results demonstrated that BAY 60-2770 may be used as a therapeutic agent for cardiac IR injury.

Polycystic ovary syndrome with hyperandrogenism as a risk factor for non-obese non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2017; 45:1403-1412. Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, most studies investigated the prevalence of NAFLD in obese PCOS patients. AIM To compare the prevalence of non-obese NAFLD in women with or without PCOS, and to assess an independent association between PCOS and NAFLD in a non-obese Asian cohort. METHODS This was a case-control study using a prospective PCOS cohort. After subjects with other potential causes of chronic liver disease were excluded, 275 non-obese women with PCOS and 892 non-obese controls were enrolled. NAFLD was determined by hepatic ultrasonography. Main outcomes were the prevalence of NAFLD on hepatic ultrasonography between non-obese women with or without PCOS, and an independent association between non-obese NAFLD and PCOS. RESULTS Non-obese women with PCOS had a significantly higher prevalence of NAFLD than those without PCOS (5.5% vs. 2.8%, P = 0.027). PCOS was associated with non-obese NAFLD (odds ratio: 2.62, 95% confidence intervals: 1.25-5.48) after adjustment for age and body mass index (BMI). In women with PCOS, the level of androgenicity represented by free testosterone or free androgen index was associated with NAFLD after adjustment for age, BMI, lipid profile, insulin resistance or glycaemic status. CONCLUSIONS Non-obese NAFLD is more prevalent in women with polycystic ovary syndrome than in those without. In non-obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, hyperandrogenemia may be an independent risk factor for non-obese NAFLD.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P_{2}≡⟨Δp_{T}Δp_{T}⟩/⟨p_{T}⟩^{2}, in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. Results for P_{2} are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δϕ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P_{2}, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system.

Risk factors to predict the development of chronic kidney disease in patients with lupus nephritis. Lupus 2017; 26:1139-1148. Abstract
Objectives We analyzed the clinical follow-up results of 88 lupus nephritis patients to find prognostic factors for the development of chronic kidney disease in ethnically homogeneous Korean patients with biopsy-proven lupus nephritis. Methods Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment-related data at the time of kidney biopsy and during follow-up were obtained. Renal biopsy specimens were reclassified according to the International Society of Pathology/Renal Pathology Society classification, separately, by two renal pathologists blinded to the previous classification. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox proportional hazard regression model to identify independent risk factors for chronic kidney disease in lupus nephritis patients. Results Eighteen of 88 patients (20.5%) developed chronic kidney disease during a mean follow-up of 47.6 months (range: 12–96 months). Patients who developed chronic kidney disease were older at onset of lupus nephritis, had less education, and were more likely to have hypertension; they had lower serum albumin levels, lower platelet levels, higher serum creatinine levels, lower estimated glomerular filtration rate, higher chronicity index, and lower frequency of anti-ribosomal P antibodies, and they were less likely to be in complete remission in the first year. In stepwise multivariable analyses, hypertension, lower glomerular filtration rate, and failure to achieve complete remission in the first year of treatment were significant predictors of the development of chronic kidney disease in lupus nephritis patients. Conclusions These findings suggest that patients with hypertension and decreased kidney function at the onset of lupus nephritis and showing a poor response to immunosuppressive drugs in the first year should be monitored carefully and managed aggressively to avoid deterioration of kidney function.

Enhanced-autophagy by exenatide mitigates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Int J Cardiol 2017; 232:40-47. [PMID: 28159361 DOI: 10.1016/j.ijcard.2017.01.123] [Citation(s) in RCA: 34] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/10/2016] [Revised: 12/27/2016] [Accepted: 01/26/2017] [Indexed: 01/01/2023]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Exenatide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 analogue that mitigates myocardial injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury via the survival signaling pathway. We hypothesized that exenatide would provide a protective effect in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. METHODS H9c2 cardiomyocytes were pre-treated with exenatide followed by doxorubicin (DOX), and cell viability and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were subsequently measured. In order to determine the role of autophagy, we performed western blot as well as TUNEL and autophagosome staining. Additionally, rats were treated with exenatide 1h prior to every DOX treatment. Left ventricular (LV) function and performance were then assessed by echocardiography. Myocardial and serum ROS was measured with DHE fluorescence and ROS/RNS assay. RESULTS DOX-induced caspase-3 activation decreased after pre-treatment with exenatide both in vivo and in vitro. Oxidative stress was attenuated by exenatide in H9c2 cells, as well as in cardiac tissue and serum. The number of autophagosomes and autophagic markers were further increased by exenatide in the DOX-treated H9c2 cells, which mediated AMPK activation. Suppression of the autophagosome abolished exenatide-induced anti-apoptotic effect. Echocardiography showed that pre-treatment with exenatide significantly improved LV dysfunction that is induced by DOX treatment. Exenatide inhibits the DOX-induced production of intracellular ROS and apoptosis in the myocardium. The autophagic markers increased in exenatide pre-treated cardiac tissue. CONCLUSION Exenatide reduces DOX-induced apoptosis of cardiomyocytes by upregulating autophagy and improving cardiac dysfunction. These novel results highlight the therapeutic potential of exenatide to prevent doxorubicin cardiotoxicity.

Correlated Event-by-Event Fluctuations of Flow Harmonics in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2016; 117:182301. Abstract
We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic v_{2} and quadrangular v_{4} flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between v_{2} and triangular v_{3} flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, ampt, and hijing models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

The rate of and risk factors for frequent hospitalization in systemic lupus erythematosus: results from the Korean lupus network registry. Lupus 2016; 25:1412-1419. [PMID: 27000153 DOI: 10.1177/0961203316640916] [Citation(s) in RCA: 33] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/15/2022]
Abstract
Objectives The survival rate of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus has improved in the last few decades, but the rate of hospitalization and health care costs for these patients remain higher than in the general population. Thus, we evaluated the rate of hospitalization and associated risk factors in an inception cohort of Korean patients with lupus. Methods Of the 507 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus enrolled in the KORean lupus NETwork, we investigated an inception cohort consisting of 196 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus presenting within 6 months of diagnosis based on the American College of Rheumatology classification criteria. We evaluated the causes of hospitalization, demographic characteristics, and laboratory and clinical data at the time of systemic lupus erythematosus diagnosis of hospitalized patients and during a follow-up period. We calculated the hospitalization rate as the number of total hospitalizations divided by the disease duration, and defined "frequent hospitalization" as hospitalization more than once per year. Results Of the 196 patients, 117 (59.6%) were admitted to hospital a total of 257 times during the 8-year follow-up period. Moreover, 22 (11.2%) patients were hospitalized frequently. The most common reasons for hospitalization included disease flares, infection, and pregnancy-related morbidity. In the univariate regression analysis, malar rash, arthritis, pericarditis, renal involvement, fever, systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index > 12, hemoglobin level < 10 mg/dl, albumin level < 3.5 mg/dl, and anti-Sjögren's syndrome A positivity were associated with frequent hospitalization. Finally, multivariate analysis showed that arthritis, pericarditis, and anti-Sjögren's syndrome A antibody positivity at the time of diagnosis were risk factors for frequent hospitalization. Conclusions Our results showed that frequent hospitalization occurred in 11.2% of hospitalized patients and arthritis, pericarditis, and anti-Sjögren's syndrome A antibody positivity at the time of diagnosis were risk factors for frequent hospitalization.
