A Miniature Traveling Wave Ultrasonic Linear Motor Utilizing Bimorph Transducers

Scaling down linear actuators is crucial for various industrial applications, yet the efficiency of electromagnetic linear actuators decreases significantly as they are miniaturized. Millimeter-scale miniature ultrasonic motors, on the other hand, maintain high efficiency. This paper describes a new approach to facilitate the miniaturization of traveling wave linear ultrasonic motors by attaching bimorph transducers to the ends of the stator beams. To control the resonance frequency and facilitate the generation of a traveling flexural wave in the beam, grooves are incorporated into the bimorph structure. Mechanical output is improved by amplifying the transverse displacement through the addition of teeth to the beam. Utilizing the Finite Element Method (FEM), a prototype measuring 10 mm × 10 mm × 160 mm was designed, fabricated, and tested. It achieved an output speed of 53.7 mm/s and a thrust of 0.83 N at a peak-to-peak voltage of 300 V and a frequency of 32.7 kHz. The results show that the proposed ultrasonic linear motors with small size, simple structure and overall compactness have promising applications in robotics, precision machining, medical equipment and other fields requiring miniature compact linear motions.

Survey on the implementation status and reproductive outcomes of oocyte and ovarian tissue cryopreservation in Japan: Historical comparison with nationwide surveys

PURPOSE

To clarify the reproductive outcomes of fertility preservation (FP) treatment.

METHODS

We conducted a mailed-in questionnaire survey at institutions certified by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology to investigate the number of oocyte cryopreservations (OC) and ovarian tissue cryopreservations (OTC) performed from December 2016 to the end of 2020. And, we conducted a detailed investigation of cases in which frozen specimens were used during the investigation period, and made historical comparisons with previous nationwide studies.

RESULTS

Responses were received from 114 out of 150 facilities (response rate: 76.0%) for OC and 43 out of 51 for OTC (response rate: 84.3%). Breast cancer was the most common disease among patients whose FP specimens were used. During the study period, 1237 OCs and 198 OTCs were performed. In addition, 57 cycles of embryo transfer (ET) using cryopreserved oocytes and 12 cases of ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT) were performed. The mean age of patients who underwent ET using cryopreserved oocytes was 34.8 (±5.8) years, with a median age of 36 years. The pregnancy rate per ET using cryopreserved oocytes was 26.3% and the live birth rate (LBR) was 17.5%. Further, the LBR per patient was 43.3%, and the pregnancy rate following OTTs was 33.3%. Also, controlled ovarian stimulation using the random start method or the combination of aromatase inhibitors had no effect on pregnancy outcome.

CONCLUSION

Implementation of both OCs and OTCs have markedly increased over time in Japan, with comparable reproductive outcomes as other reports.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Milk-based culture of Penicillium camemberti and its component oleamide affect cognitive function in healthy elderly Japanese individuals: a multi-arm randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Dairy products and fermented foods have a reported association with maintained cognitive function. Camembert cheese, a dairy product fermented by the white mold Penicillium camemberti, has also been shown to enhance cognitive function in vivo. Oleamide, derived from the fermentation of the white mold, is a candidate for an active component, and expected to improve both cognitive function and sleep conditions. Thus, this study investigated whether the milk-based culture of white mold (MCW), and oleamide, could improve cognitive function and sleep state clinically. A multi-arm randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in Tokyo, Japan. 60 healthy Japanese individuals aged 50-75 who were aware of their cognitive decline were randomly and equally divided into three groups of 20 participants using computer-generated random numbers. Participants took either MCW (equivalent to 60 μg/day of oleamide), 60 μg/day of oleamide, or placebo capsules for 12 weeks. Serum BDNF, cognitive function by Cognitrax as primary and MCI Screen as secondary outcome, and sleep status using the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J) were assessed before and after intervention. The participants, outcome assessors and analysts, and research assistants were blinded to the group assignment. Of the 60 participants, 58 completed the study and were analyzed. No adverse events related to test foods were observed. The placebo group showed a negative rate of change in serum BDNF (-10.5% ± 19.7%), whereas the MCW and oleamide groups showed positive changes (2.0% ± 27.1% and 1.3% ± 13.5%, respectively). Cognitrax scores increased after 12 weeks in all groups. Conversely, the MPI score of the MCI Screen demonstrated a significant improvement in the MCW and oleamide groups compared to the placebo group (p = 0.013 and p < 0.001, respectively). The subscales, immediate free recall and delayed free recall, also significantly increased in them compared to the placebo group. Although PSQI-J revealed no significant differences among groups, the MCW and oleamide groups showed significant improvement after intervention in overall score, subjective sleep quality, and sleep latency. Our results suggest that MCW and its component, oleamide, are safe and contribute to maintaining cognitive functions, particularly short-term and working memory, and improving sleep state. Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Survey of Transitional Care Between Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology in Japan

Purpose: This study's aim was to determine the actual status of transitional care for patients with pediatric cancer (PPCs) in Japan by surveying obstetricians/gynecologists. Methods: A questionnaire survey on transitional medicine was conducted in the form of an online questionnaire at 579 major training facilities nationwide, which were registered with the Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Results: While 40% of the facilities had received referrals for PPCs, only 13% provided transitional care specifically for PPCs. The most common problems with referrals were related to "insufficient explanation." In addition, at facilities with no experience treating PPCs, many respondents commented that they did not know how to follow the progression of the disease. Regarding the necessity of obstetrics/gynecology visits for PPCs, more than half of the respondents at facilities with experience treating PPCs answered that such visits were "necessary"; only 1% answered that they were "unnecessary." On the other hand, 37% of the facilities that had no experience treating PPCs answered that it was "necessary," whereas 4% answered that it was "unnecessary." Conclusions: This survey of the actual status of transitional care between pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology in Japan identified issues to be addressed for the spread of transitional care. The results suggest that, in the future, health care professionals need education to increase their knowledge, and that patient education that leads to patients' awareness of their own self-management is necessary.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

The effects of dark chocolate on cognitive performance during cognitively demanding tasks: A randomized, single-blinded, crossover, dose-comparison study

Dark chocolate, rich in polyphenols, increases cerebral blood flow and improves cognitive function. This study aimed to determine whether the consumption of chocolate with a high concentration of polyphenols helps to maintain cognitive performance during cognitively demanding tasks. In this randomized, single-blinded, crossover, dose-comparison study, 18 middle-aged adults consumed two types of chocolate (25 g each), one with a high concentration (635.0 mg) and the other with a low concentration (211.7 mg) of cacao polyphenols, and performed a cognitive task requiring response inhibition and selective attention over two time periods (15-30 min and 40-55 min after consumption, respectively). Autonomic nerve function and subjective feelings, such as fatigue and concentration, were measured before food intake and after the second task to assess the participant's state. The results showed that the average reaction time between the first and second sessions was not significantly different for either high- or low-concentration chocolate consumption. However, the percentage of correct responses was similar in the first (96.7 %) and second (96.8 %) sessions for high-concentration chocolate consumption and significantly lower for low-concentration chocolate consumption in the second (96.4 %) session than in the first session (97.3 %). Autonomic nerve function showed a significant increase in sympathetic nerve activity after the second task with high-concentration chocolate consumption, while subjective feelings showed an increase in mental fatigue for both chocolate types but a significant decrease in concentration only after the second task with low-concentration chocolate consumption. These findings suggest that dark chocolate consumption contributes to the maintenance of performance and concentration in continuous and demanding cognitive tasks.

Peripapillary vessel density in eyes with cone-rod dystrophy

PURPOSE

To compared the vessel density (VD) around the optic nerve head (ONH) in eyes with cone-rod dystrophy (CORD) and healthy control eyes in a sector-wise manner and to investigate the relationship between VD around the ONH and visual function in CORD eyes.

METHODS

Twenty-six eyes in 14 CORD patients and 25 eyes in 25 healthy control subjects were examined. Using OCT angiography images, the VDs in the superficial and deep capillary plexus at the macula (sVDm and dVDm) and those around the ONH in the superior, temporal, inferior and nasal region (VDnh_s, VDnh_t, VDnh_i, and VDnh_n, respectively) were measured for each eye. Patient age, visual acuity (VA) and VDs were then compared between two groups. Moreover, the relationships between VA and the VDs were analyzed using a linear mixed model and AICc model selection.

RESULTS

No significant difference in age was seen between the CORD and control groups (p = 0.87, Wilcoxon rank sum test), but the VA was significantly lower in the CORD group (p<0.0001). Both sVDm and dVDm were significantly lower in the CORD eyes than in the control eyes (both p<0.0001). Among VDnh_s, VDnh_t, VDnh_i, and VDnh_n, however, only VDnh_t differed significantly between the CORD and control groups (p = 0.035). Among age, VDnh_t, dVDm, and sVDm, the optimal model for VA included only VDnh_t and dVDm.

CONCLUSIONS

In addition to the VD in the deep capillary plexus at the macula, the measurement of temporal VD around the ONH might be useful for predicting visual function in eyes with CORD.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

A mutually communicable external system resource in remote monitoring for cardiovascular implantable electronic devices

BACKGROUND

Using third-party resources to manage remote monitoring (RM) data from implantable cardiac electronic devices (CIEDs) can assist in device clinic workflows. However, each hospital-acquired data is not used for further analysis as big data.

METHODS AND RESULTS

We developed a real-time and automatically centralized system of CIED information from multiple hospitals. If the extensive data-based analysis suggests individual problems, it can be returned to each hospital. To show its feasibility, we prospectively analyzed data from six hospitals. For example, unexpected abnormal battery levels were easily illustrated without recall information.

CONCLUSIONS

The centralized RM system could be a new platform that promotes the utilization of device data as big data, and that information could be used for each patient's practice.

Analysis of Protein Digestion and Absorption Using a Ussing Chamber to Simulate the Environment in the Digestive Tract

The Ussing chamber is a tool for analyzing drug absorption. We investigated whether the Ussing chamber can be used to analyze the process from digestion to absorption of protein in the gastrointestinal tract. Mixtures containing infant formula, whole cow's milk, processed soy milk, enteral nutrition, or human breast milk, were placed in the apical membrane side equipped with Caco-2 cells. After the addition of first pepsin then pancreatin, samples from the apical and basal membranes were collected. Infant formula showed the highest digestibility and absorption rate. This may be attributed to the presence of whey protein, which is rapidly digested and absorbed. The digestion and absorption of human breast milk showed different results in each donor, suggesting that digestion and absorption may vary among individuals. We concluded that the Ussing chamber can continuously analyze the process from digestion to absorption of proteins in the gastrointestinal tract.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Cacao Polyphenol-Rich Dark Chocolate Intake Contributes to Efficient Brain Activity during Cognitive Tasks: A Randomized, Single-Blinded, Crossover, and Dose-Comparison fMRI Study

Cacao polyphenol-enriched dark chocolate may have beneficial effects on human health, such as facilitating maintaining good performance in long-lasting cognitive tasks. This study examined the effects of dark chocolate intake on improving brain function during cognitive tasks using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this randomized, single-blinded, crossover, and dose-comparison study, 26 healthy middle-aged participants ingested dark chocolate (25 g) either with a low concentration (LC) (211.7 mg) or a high concentration (HC) (635 mg) of cacao polyphenols. Thereafter, their brain activities were analyzed during continuous and effortful cognitive tasks relevant to executive functioning using fMRI in two consecutive 15 min sessions (25 and 50 min after ingestion). We observed significant interaction effects between chocolate consumption and brain activity measurement sessions in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left inferior parietal lobule. After HC chocolate ingestion, these areas showed lower brain activity in the second session than in the first session; however, these areas showed higher activity in the second session after LC chocolate ingestion. These results suggest that cacao polyphenol-enriched dark chocolate enhances the efficient use of cognitive resources by reducing the effort of brain activity.

Predictive factors for postoperative visual function in eyes with epiretinal membrane

Our current study aimed to investigate the association of preoperative OCT parameters with visual function after vitrectomy surgery in eyes with epiretinal membrane (ERM). This study enrolled 33 eyes with ERM that underwent vitrectomy surgery. In addition to visual acuity (VA), metamorphopsia was measured pre- and postoperatively for each eye. Using the preoperative horizontal and vertical OCT images, SUKIMA (the gap area between the ERM and retinal surface) was measured respectively and the average of horizontal SUKIMA and vertical SUKIMA was used for the analysis. The associations of baseline parameters (age, axial length, preoperative central retinal thickness [CRT], inner nuclear layer [INL] thickness, ectopic inner foveal layer [EIFL] and SUKIMA) with postoperative VA, the change in VA, postoperative metamorphopsia and the improvement in metamorphopsia were investigated using multivariate regression analysis followed by the model selection. The result suggested that age and INL thickness were related to the postoperative VA, whereas age and preoperative CRT were significantly associated with the change in VA. In contrast, only SUKIMA was correlated with the postoperative metamorphopsia, whilst age, EIFL and SUKIMA were associated with the improvement in metamorphopsia. Measuring SUKIMA might be useful for predicting postoperative metamorphopsia and the improvement in metamorphopsia in ERM eyes.

The study of the efficiency of in vitro maturation of ovarian tissue oocytes in pediatric patients

PURPOSE

Although recent in vitro maturation (IVM) studies in pediatric patients have demonstrated successful retrieval and maturation of oocytes, the studies included only a small number of premenarchal patients. In the present study, we examined the potential use of oocyte retrieval and maturation for pediatric patients who undergo ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC).

METHODS

We retrospectively examined the clinical records of pediatric patients who underwent OTC at our institution between October 2015 and December 2022. Data on the age, primary disease, menstrual history, pre-procedure chemotherapy, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) level, number of oocytes collected ex vivo from ovarian tissue, and number of mature oocytes from IVM were examined.

RESULTS

Data of 60 pediatric patients (aged 1 to 17 years) were included for analysis. Oocytes were retrieved from 36 patients; the oocytes of 18 of these patients could be cryopreserved. The IVM rate was significantly lower in the premenarchal patients than in the postmenarchal patients. The number of mature oocytes retrieved from IVM was higher in the no-chemotherapy group than in the chemotherapy group. A significant positive correlation was observed between the AMH level and the IVM outcomes.

CONCLUSION

Oocyte retrieval and maturation in pediatric patients undergoing OTC is particularly useful in those not receiving chemotherapy. In patients receiving chemotherapy, the AMH level may be useful for predicting the IVM outcome. Activation of the oocyte maturation process in vivo in pediatric patients and better understanding of the major regulators of oocyte maturation are necessary to improve the utility of the IVM procedure.

Quantitative assessment of urinary equol levels, equol-producing bacteria, and the faecal microbiota in healthy Japanese individuals

Equol (4',7-isoflavandiol) has attracted considerable attention for its potential efficacy in treating hormonal diseases. In this study we collected samples from healthy Japanese individuals (n = 91) to observe the relationship between the abundance of equol-producing bacteria in their faeces and the concentration of equol in their urine. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) targeting the dihydrodaidzein reductase gene (dhdr) was used to detect equol-producing bacteria. Equol producers, who were defined as individuals with >1000 nmol/l equol in their urine, exhibited 4-8 log10 copies of dhdr/g faeces of equol-producing bacteria. We assessed the accuracy of these findings by determining the rate of correspondence between possessing equol-producing bacteria and producing urinary equol. Of the 91 participants, 33 were found to be positive for both equol-producing bacteria and urinary equol, 52 were negative for both, one was positive for equol-producing bacteria and negative for urinary equol, and five were negative for equol-producing bacteria and positive for urinary equol. The sensitivity and specificity of the qPCR for detecting equol-producing bacteria were 86.8% and 98.1%, respectively. On the whole, the presence of equol-producing bacteria and urinary equol displayed 93.4% concordance, with a kappa coefficient of 0.862. No apparent correlation was observed between dhdr copy number in the faeces and urinary equol concentrations. Analysis of the faecal microbiota showed that alpha diversity indices (OTU, ACE, Chao1, Shannon) were significantly higher in equol producers. Specifically, the relative abundance of phylum Pseudomonadota was increased in non-equol producers, while abundance of genus Alistipes, Barnesiella, Butyricimonas, Odoribacter, and Ruminococcus, which produce short chain fatty acids and/or hydrogen, were only observed in equol producers. These results suggest that a certain amount of equol-producing bacteria must be present in the intestine to produce detectable levels of equol, and that equol productivity might be affected by other components of the microbiota.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Adrenocortical hypoperfusion detected by contrast-enhanced ultrasound in a dog with trilostane-induced hypoadrenocorticism

A 12-year-old neutered male Chihuahua dog was diagnosed with pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism and treated with trilostane. Eighty-nine days later, the dog showed lethargy accompanied by hyponatraemia and hyperkalaemia. Hypoadrenocorticism due to trilostane was suspected, but the result of the adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test was not conclusive. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound showed loss of adrenocortical blood flow in both adrenal glands, indicating adrenocortical hypoperfusion and isolated hypoadrenocorticism. Treatment with fludrocortisone acetate improved the condition and electrolyte abnormalities. Thirteen months later, the dog showed alopecia, and an adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test revealed increased cortisol concentration, indicating hypercortisolism recurrence. The dog died due to progressive deterioration 22 months after the initial presentation. Post-mortem examination revealed focally extensive necrosis with marked calcification in the parenchyma of the adrenal glands and regeneration of the cells in the zona fasciculata with severe fibrosis. Adrenocortical hypoperfusion detected by contrast-enhanced ultrasound can support the diagnosis of adrenal necrosis and hypoadrenocorticism.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Systematic-error suppression in low-coherence Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry

Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis (BOCDA) utilizing low-coherence light sources offers high-resolution distributed strain and temperature sensing. However, conventional BOCDA requires dual-end injection of pump and probe light into the sensing fiber. To overcome this limitation, low-coherence Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering has emerged, enabling single-end light injection. While a pilot demonstration has shown a spatial resolution of 19 cm, a comparison of its measurement accuracy with standard BOCDR systems is yet to be explored. This study presents a distributed measurement with ~ 3 cm spatial resolution and demonstrates that low-coherence BOCDR eliminates systematic errors caused by direct sinusoidal modulation, offering enhanced measurement precision.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. IMPACT OF GAS/AIR TAMPONADE ON REFRACTIVE OUTCOMES AFTER FLANGED INTRASCLERAL INTRAOCULAR LENS FIXATION

PURPOSE

This study aims to investigate the postoperative refractive outcomes in eyes that underwent the flanged intrascleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation combined with vitrectomy with or without gas/air tamponade.

METHODS

The eyes were divided into two groups (Group A; eyes that underwent flanged intrascleral IOL fixation with gas/air tamponade, and Group B; eyes that underwent flanged intrascleral IOL fixation without gas/air tamponade). The predicted spherical equivalent (SE) refraction values were calculated using the Sander-Retzlaff-Kraff Theoretical formula. Then, the prediction error was calculated by subtracting the predicted SE refraction from the postoperative objective SE refraction and the absolute prediction error was calculated as the absolute value of the prediction error for each eye.

RESULTS

A total of 68 eyes were included in the current study. There was a significant correlation between the predicted and postoperative SE refraction in both groups (Group A, r = 0.968, P < 0.0001, Group B, r = 0.943, P < 0.0001, linear regression analysis). The prediction error demonstrated a mild myopic shift after the flanged intrascleral IOL fixation in both groups (Group A, -0.40 ± 0.96 diopter, Group B, -0.59 ± 0.95 diopter). There was no significant difference in prediction error and absolute prediction error between the two groups ( P = 0.44, P = 0.70, Wilcoxon rank sum test).

CONCLUSION

The postoperative SE refraction after flanged intrascleral IOL fixation was not influenced by gas/air tamponade.

The Development and Evaluation of an All-Purpose Bolus for Radiotherapy

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The purpose of this study was to develop on a new bolus (HM bolus) which had tissue equivalence, transparency, reusability, and free shaping at approximately 40°C for excellent adhesion, and to evaluate its features could be satisfy ideal bolus conditions for clinical use.

MATERIALS/METHODS

The newly developed HM bolus was controlled to prevent phase separation by adjusting the contents of ethylene propylene rubber, styrene, butadiene rubber, thermoplastic resin, temperature-sensitive adjuster, and silica. The element ratios (wt%) in the HM bolus are H: 10.2%, C: 63.5%, O: 17.1%, and Si: 9.2%. The density was adjusted to 0.96 g cm-3. We evaluated dose characteristics, a vinyl gel sheet bolus (Gel bolus) and HM bolus placed on a water-equivalent phantom were used to obtain the percent depth dose (PDD) of electron (6 MeV, 9 MeV) and photon (4 MV,6 MV) beams. The average dose difference of the HM bolus and Gel bolus was calculated. The Gel bolus, a soft rubber bolus (SR bolus), and HM bolus were placed in adherence to a pelvic phantom. CT images taken after shaping and 1, 2, and 3 weeks after shaping were used to evaluate the adhesion and reproducibility using air gap and dice similarity coefficient (DSC) metrics. The visibility of letters (maximum: 80 pt, minimum: 10 pt) through a plate-shaped bolus and the visibility of markers when each bolus was set up on the pelvic phantom under normal room lighting were evaluated.

RESULTS

The average dose difference for electron beams was 0.16% ± 0.79% and photon beams was 0.06% ± 0.34%, both within 1% of the PDD results. The HM bolus showed the same build-up effect and dose characteristics as the Gel bolus. The mean air gap values for the Gel bolus, SR bolus, and HM bolus were 96.02 ± 43.77 cm3, 34.93 ± 21.44 cm3, and 4.40 ± 1.50 cm3 44, respectively. The mean DSC values for the Gel bolus, SR bolus, and HM bolus were 0.363 ± 0.035, 0.556 ± 0.042, and 0.837±0.018. The HM bolus showed the smallest air gap at all time points and the DSC closest to 1. Excellent adhesion was observed in the CT simulation and during the treatment period. The letter visibility through the HM bolus and Gel bolus was sufficient, and when the HM bolus was set up on the pelvic phantom, the markers that were completely invisible with the SR bolus were visible.

CONCLUSION

We succeeded in developing an all-purpose bolus with unique characteristics for clinical use. The HM bolus had the same build-up effect and dose characteristics as a Gel bolus. Therefore, it can be used for CT simulation and dose calculation. The other advantages of the new bolus are tissue equivalence, transparency, reusability, and free shaping at approximately 40°C, providing excellent adhesion at each setup during the treatment period.

Ketogenic effects of medium chain triglycerides containing formula and its correlation to breath acetone in healthy volunteers: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, single dose-response study

The efficacy of low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets, such as ketogenic diets, for cancer patients is of research interest. We previously demonstrated the efficacy of the ketogenic diet in a case study in which medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) or MCT-containing formula (ketogenic formula) was used as a supplement to increase blood ketone bodies. However, little is known about the amounts needed to induce ketogenic effects and about the usefulness of monitoring of breath acetone. To investigate the pharmacokinetics of MCTs and their metabolites, blood ketone bodies and breath acetone, 24 healthy subjects received one of four single oral doses of the ketogenic formula (equivalent to 0, 10, 20, and 30 g of MCTs) under fasting conditions. Total blood ketone bodies, β-hydroxybutyrate, octanoic acid, and decanoic acid were increased in a dose-dependent manner. The ketogenic effect was considered to depend on octanoic and decanoic acids, because a positive correlation was observed between them. A strong positive correlation was also observed between total serum ketone bodies and breath acetone at each time points. Therefore, monitoring breath acetone levels seems a less invasive method to predict blood concentrations of ketone bodies during ketogenic diet therapy. Measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters from the T2K experiment using 3.6×1021 protons on target

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in δ CP , and just below 2 σ using a flat prior in sin δ CP . When the external constraint on sin 2 θ 13 is removed, sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Fear of falling and associated factors among older adults in Southeast Asia: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence, measurement scales, related factors and interventions for fear of falling (FOF) among older adults in Southeast Asia.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a systematic review.

METHODS

Published research studies on FOF among older adults were searched using the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ASEAN Citation Index, Thai Journal Citation Index, Malaysian Journal Citation Report and Google Scholar. All observational and experimental studies investigating FOF among community-dwelling older adults in Southeast Asia were eligible. A narrative synthesis was used to describe the findings. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist was used to assess the quality and risk of bias of the included studies.

RESULTS

A total of 15 observational studies and three experimental studies were included after screening 2112 titles and abstracts. These studies, published between 2011 and 2021, were conducted in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The FOF prevalence ranged from 21.6% to 88.2%. The most commonly used FOF assessment tool was the Falls Efficacy Scale-International. Well-reported related factors of FOF were female sex, advanced age, balance impairment and fall history. All experimental studies utilising single- or multi-component interventions comprised an exercise approach. Limited studies have considered environmental factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Various related factors of FOF and the interventions implemented were revealed. Public health researchers and policymakers should consider the factors related to FOF in practical FOF intervention and prevention strategies. Further evidence on FOF issues is required to understand the multidimensional characteristics of FOF, specifically the environmental aspects of older adults in Southeast Asia.

Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Retinal haemorrhages on ultra-widefield red channel images and perfusion status in central retinal vein occlusion

PURPOSE

To evaluate the relationship between retinal haemorrhages detected on Ultra-widefield (UWF) red channel images and perfusion status in eyes with acute central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

METHODS

UWF fundus images were split into green and red channels using ImageJ software. The retinal haemorrhages were calculated quantitatively with both the green and red channel images, resulting in green channel haemorrhages (GCH) and red channel haemorrhages (RCH). The nonperfusion area (NPA) was also calculated from fluorescein angiography in each eye. The relationships between both the GCH and RCH with the NPA were investigated.

RESULTS

Thirty-two eyes of 32 patients with acute CRVO (18 men, 14 women) were included. The mean GCH and RCH values were 10.4% ± 8.2% and 1.7% ± 1.7%, respectively. The mean NPA was 39.2% ± 28.8%. Significant correlations were seen between the GCH and NPA (r = 0.38; P = 0.022) and RCH and NPA (r = 0.44; P = 0.010, linear regression analysis). Multivariate analysis suggested that only the RCHs were correlated significantly with the NPA.

CONCLUSIONS

Retinal haemorrhages detected by UWF red channel imaging were less compared to green channel imaging and associated closely with retinal NPAs in eyes with acute CRVO. UWF red channel imaging allowed us to identify ischaemia-related haemorrhage.

Transcoronary mapping using a guidewire during transcoronary ethanol ablation for ventricular tachycardia with a deep intramural substrate: a case report

Background

Transcoronary ethanol ablation is effective in treating ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the deep myocardium. The selection of the target coronary artery plays an important role in the success of transcoronary ethanol ablation. Transcoronary mapping, using a guidewire, may be effective for identifying the target coronary artery.

Case summary

A 72-year-old man, who had undergone thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction 40 years ago, was admitted to the emergency department with a chief complaint of syncope. Five years ago, a cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator was implanted for a left bundle branch block (QRS duration 153 ms), with New York Heart Association Class Ⅲ and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 30%.Due to VT, he experienced a critical deterioration in his vital parameters, leading to shock. The first VT ablation was performed on the 3rd day of hospitalization. Activation mapping showed that the earliest activation site was located in the mid-anterior septum of the left ventricle. Mapping from the endocardial surface showed no mid-diastolic potential around the VT. Radiofrequency catheter ablation therapy was performed at the targeted site, resulting in transient termination of VT. However, the VT showed recurrence the next day. A transcoronary ethanol ablation was performed on the 10th day of hospitalization. A 0.014 inch guidewire and microcatheter were advanced into the target coronary septal branch, and the myocardial septum was mapped. The guidewire-assisted transcoronary mapping showed a potential 43 ms ahead of QRS onset during VT. The coronary septal artery branch was considered the target artery, and 0.5 mL of ethanol was injected. No further VT was observed for 12 months after the transcoronary ethanol ablation.

Discussion

Transcoronary ethanol ablation is considered in cases where a deep intramural substrate is suspected or when early activation at the interventricular septum is identified. Guidewire-assisted transcoronary mapping allows mapping of VT with deep intramural substrates and may be useful in selecting target coronary arteries while performing transcoronary ethanol ablation.

Prognostic predictors in patients with cardiopulmonary arrest: A novel equation for evaluating the 30-day mortality

BACKGROUND

Early prediction of outcomes after cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is important for considering the best support. Our purpose was to evaluate predictors of the 30-day mortality in patients with CPA after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and to assess an equation for calculating the 30-day mortality using clinical parameters.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed the data of 194 consecutive patients with CPA and ROSC in a derivation study (2015-2022). We compared clinical parameters between the survived (n = 78) and dead (n = 116) patients. We derived an equation for estimated probability of death based on clinical parameters, using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The reliability of the equation was validated in 80 additional patients with CPA.

RESULTS

The 30-day mortality was associated with sex, witnessed cardiac arrest, bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), CPA due to acute myocardial infarction, pupil diameter, Glasgow Coma Scale score (GCS), presence of light reflex, arterial or venous pH, lactate levels, initial ventricular fibrillation (VF), CPA time, and age. The derived logistic regression equation was as follows: Estimated probability of death = 1 / (1 + e-x), x = (0.25 × bystander CPR) + (0.44 × pupil diameter) - (0.14 × GCS) + (0.09 × lactate) - (1.87 × initial VF) + (0.07 × CPA time) + (0.05 × age) - 7.03. The cut-off value for estimated probability of death calculated by this equation was 54.5 %, yielding a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 86.2 %, 80.8 %, and 84.5 %, respectively. In the validation model, these values were 81.8 %, 85.7 %, and 82.5 %, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The 30-day mortality may be calculated after ROSC in patients with CPA using simple clinical parameters. This equation may facilitate further best support for patients with CPA.

Inverse Association between Cheese Consumption and Lower Cognitive Function in Japanese Community-Dwelling Older Adults Based on a Cross-Sectional Study

Diet modification may contribute to the prevention of age-related cognitive decline. The association between dairy product consumption and cognitive function in older people remains unknown. We investigated whether cheese intake is associated with lower cognitive function (LCF) in community-dwelling older adults. This cross-sectional study included 1503 adults aged over 65 years. The analyzed data were obtained through face-to-face interviews and functional ability measurement. Cognitive function was assessed using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), and a score ≤23 was defined as LCF. The prevalence of LCF was 4.6%, and this group had smaller calf circumference, slower usual walking speed, and a more frequent history of anemia than subjects with MMSE scores >23. After adjusting for confounding factors, logistic regression analysis revealed cheese intake (odds ratio (OR) = 0.404, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.198-0.824), age (OR = 1.170, 95% CI = 1.089-1.256), usual walking speed (OR = 0.171, 95% CI = 0.062-0.472) and calf circumference (OR = 0.823, 95% CI = 0.747-0.908) to be significant factors associated with LCF. Although the present study was an analysis of cross-sectional data of Japanese community-dwelling older adults, the results suggest that cheese intake is inversely associated with LCF.

Effects of 5-fluorouracil Co-administration on Blood Pressure in Patients Maintained on Antihypertensives: a Retrospective Case Series

This study aimed to investigate the possible drug-drug interactions (DDIs) of 5-FU with antihypertensives metabolised by CYP3A4 and 2C9, using blood pressure (BP) as a pharmacodynamic (PD) parameter. Patients who received 5-FU in combination with antihypertensives metabolised by CYP3A4 or 2C9, specifically, a) amlodipine, nifedipine, or amlodipine + nifedipine, b) candesartan or valsartan, or c) amlodipine + candesartan, amlodipine + losartan, or nifedipine + valsartan, (Group A, n = 20) were identified. Patients who received 5-FU with WF and antihypertensives, specifically, a) amlodipine or b) amlodipine + telmisartan, amlodipine + candesartan, or amlodipine + valsartan, (Group B, n = 5) or 5-FU alone (Group C, n = 25) were also identified and analysed as a comparator and control group, respectively. Regarding the peak BP levels during chemotherapy, there was a significant increase in both SBP (P < 0.0002 and 0.0013) and DBP (P = 0.0243 and 0.0032) in Groups A and C, respectively (Tukey-Kramer test). In contrast, although SBP also increased in Group B during chemotherapy, the change was not statistically significant and there was a decrease in DBP. The significant increase in SBP can be attributed to chemotherapy-induced hypertension by 5-FU or other drugs in the chemotherapeutic regimens. However, when comparing the lowest BP levels during chemotherapy, there was a decrease in SBP and DBP in all groups from the baseline values. The median time to peak and lowest BP was at least 2 weeks and 3 weeks, respectively, for all groups, suggesting that a BP lowering effect was observed following the offset of the initial chemotherapy-induced hypertension. At least 1 month after 5-FU chemotherapy, the SBP and DBP returned to baseline values in all groups. Since Group B also showed a significant increase in PT-INR, possibly demonstrating 5-FU inhibition of CYP activity and, consequently, of WF metabolism, it is likely that 5-FU also inhibited the metabolism of the antihypertensive drugs. The findings suggest possible DDIs between 5-FU and antihypertensives metabolised by CYP3A4.

Evaluation of responses to immunosuppressive therapy in dogs with suspected non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia: 11 cases (2012-2018)

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to determine the response time to immunosuppressive therapy and time required to achieve a 5% increase in haematocrit among dogs with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Client-owned dogs diagnosed with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia in Hokkaido University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between December 2012 and May 2018 were enrolled. The first treatment regimen included prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day) and ciclosporin (up to 10 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks. Dogs that did not respond to the first regimen proceeded to the second regimen comprising prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil (15 mg/kg, twice a day). Reticulocyte count and haematocrit were monitored every 1 to 2 weeks. Treatment response was defined as an absolute reticulocyte count more than 60×10³ /μL or increasing haematocrit.

RESULTS

During the study period, 23 dogs fulfilled the inclusion criteria for non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia. Twelve dogs were excluded from this study for various reasons and response to therapy was evaluated in the remaining 11 dogs. Treatment responses were observed in 8 of 11 dogs, and the median time to response was 39.5 days (range 8 to 92 days). Two responders were unable to continue the first treatment regimen and were switched to the second regimen owing to anorexia and nausea, possibly induced by ciclosporin; withdrawal of ciclosporin improved their symptoms. The time required to achieve a 5% increase in haematocrit was assessed in the other six dogs, with a median of 55.5 days (range 8 to 135 days).

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Here we report the response to a standardised treatment protocol in dogs with non-regenerative immune-mediated anaemia. Knowledge of potential side effects and expected therapeutic outcomes may be of use for veterinary practitioners treating this condition.

Autologous Synovial Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation Suppresses Inflammation Caused by Synovial Harvesting and Promotes Healing in a Micro Minipig Repaired Meniscus Model

PURPOSE

Allogeneic synovial mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) effectively promote meniscus healing in micro minipigs. We investigated the effect of autologous synovial MSC transplantation on meniscus healing in a micro minipig model of meniscus repair showing synovitis after synovial harvesting.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Synovium was harvested from the left knee of the micro minipigs after arthrotomy and used to prepare synovial MSCs. The left medial meniscus in the avascular region was injured, repaired, and transplanted with synovial MSCs. First, synovitis was compared after 6 weeks in knees with and without synovial harvesting. Second, the repaired meniscus was compared for the autologous MSC group and the control group (in which synovium was harvested but MSCs were not transplanted) 4 weeks after transplantation.

RESULTS

Synovitis was more severe in knees subjected to synovium harvesting than in knees not subjected to harvesting. Menisci treated with autologous MSCs showed no red granulation at the tear of the meniscus, but menisci not treated with MSCS showed red granulation. Macroscopic scores, inflammatory cell infiltration scores, and matrix scores assessed by toluidine blue staining were all significantly better in the autologous MSC group than in the control group without MSCs (n = 6).

CONCLUSION

Autologous synovial MSC transplantation suppressed the inflammation caused by synovial harvesting in micro minipigs and promoted healing of the repaired meniscus.

The effect of aromatase inhibitor on controlled ovarian stimulation for oocyte cryopreservation in adolescent and young cancer patients

AIM

To determine the impact of aromatase inhibitor (AI) use in oocyte cryopreservation among Japanese adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients for fertility preservation, we evaluated the oocyte cryopreservation outcomes following AI therapy in combination with the follicular phase start (FPS) and random start (RS) protocols.

METHODS

This retrospective study included 81 cycles of controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) among 73 AYA patients with cancer who underwent oocyte cryopreservation to maintain fertility. The outcome measures were the total number of matured oocytes that were retrieved and cryopreserved, as well as their maturation rates. The AI (+) and AI (-) groups were compared using the RS and FPS protocols.

RESULTS

Our results showed that the combined use of AI and COS decreases serum E2 levels and maintains the number of retrieved and cryopreserved mature oocytes. We also confirmed the efficacy of the RS protocol, which was found to have comparable outcomes to that of the FPS protocol in both AI (+) and AI (-) groups.

CONCLUSION

The combined use of AI and COS is beneficial for oocyte cryopreservation in patients with estrogen-sensitive cancer, regardless of the menstrual cycle phase of COS initiation.

Headache education by leaflet distribution during COVID-19 vaccination and school-based on-demand e-learning: Itoigawa Geopark Headache Awareness Campaign

OBJECTIVE

We prospectively performed the Itoigawa Headache Awareness Campaign from August 2021 to June 2022, with two main interventions, and evaluated its effectiveness.

BACKGROUND

Headache is a common public health problem, but its burden could be reduced by raising awareness about headache and the appropriate use of acute and prophylactic medication. However, few studies on raising headache awareness in the general public have been reported.

METHODS

The target group was the general public aged 15-64. We performed two main interventions synergistically supported by other small interventions. Intervention 1 included leaflet distribution and a paper-based questionnaire about headache during COVID-19 vaccination, and intervention 2 included on-demand e-learning and online survey through schools. In these interventions, we emphasize the six important topics for the general public that were described in the Clinical Practice Guideline for Headache Disorders 2021. Each response among the two interventions' cohorts was collected on pre and post occasions. The awareness of the six topics before and after the campaign was evaluated.

RESULTS

We obtained 4016 valid responses from 6382 individuals who underwent vaccination in intervention 1 and 2577 from 594 students and 1983 parents in intervention 2; thus, 6593 of 20,458 (32.2%) of the overall working-age population in Itoigawa city experienced these interventions. The percentage of individuals' aware of the six topics significantly increased after the two main interventions ranging from 6.6% (39/594)-40.0% (1606/4016) to 64.1% (381/594)-92.6% (1836/1983) (p < 0.001, all).

CONCLUSIONS

We conducted this campaign through two main interventions with an improved percentage of individuals who know about headache. The two methods of community-based interventions could raise headache awareness effectively. Furthermore, we can achieve outstanding results by doing something to raise disease awareness during mass vaccination, when almost all residents gather in a certain place, and school-based e-learning without face-to-face instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acoustic-responsive carbon dioxide-loaded liposomes for efficient drug release

The role of liposomes as drug carriers has been investigated. Ultrasound-based drug release methods have been developed for on-demand drug delivery. However, the acoustic responses of current liposome carriers result in low drug release efficiency. In this study, CO₂-loaded liposomes were synthesized under high pressure from supercritical CO₂ and irradiated with ultrasound at 237 kHz to demonstrate their superior acoustic responsiveness. When liposomes containing fluorescent drug models were irradiated with ultrasound under acoustic pressure conditions that are safe for the human body, CO₂-loaded liposomes synthesized using supercritical CO₂ had 17.1 times higher release efficiency than liposomes synthesized using the conventional Bangham method. In particular, the release efficiency of CO₂-loaded liposomes synthesized using supercritical CO₂ and monoethanolamine was 19.8 times higher than liposomes synthesized using the conventional Bangham method. These findings on the release efficiency of acoustic-responsive liposomes suggest an alternative liposome synthesis strategy for on-demand release of drugs by ultrasound irradiation in future therapies.

School-based online survey on chronic headache, migraine, and medication-overuse headache prevalence among children and adolescents in Japanese one city - Itoigawa Benizuwaigani study

BACKGROUND

We investigated the prevalence of headache, migraine, and medication-overuse headache (MOH) among children and adolescents through a school-based online questionnaire. We also investigated the triggers for migraine among them and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on headache frequency.

METHODS

Children and adolescents aged 6-17 y.o. completed an online questionnaire. Migraine, MOH was defined as The International Classification of Headache Disorders Third edition. Factor and clustering analyses were performed for migraine triggers. The effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on headache frequency was also asked.

RESULTS

Of the 2489 respondents, the prevalence of headache, migraine, and MOH were 36.44%, 9.48%, and 0.44%, respectively. Up to 70% of the respondents with headaches complained of the disturbance to daily life, but about 30% consulted doctors. The migraine triggers were grouped into 5 factors by factor analysis. The sensitivities of the migraineurs against the factors were divided into 3 clusters. Cluster 1 had stronger sensitivity for several triggers. Cluster 2 was sensitive to weather, smartphones, and video games. Cluster 3 had less sensitivity for triggers. Cluster 2 less consulted doctors even though the burden of migraine was enormous. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 10.25% of respondents increased headache attacks, while 3.97% decreased.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first detailed study on headache prevalence in Japanese students from elementary school to high school in one region. The burden of headaches is large among children and adolescents, and the unmet needs of its clinical practice should be corrected.

Search for the Majorana Nature of Neutrinos in the Inverted Mass Ordering Region with KamLAND-Zen

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in ^{136}Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of ^{136}Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}>2.3×10^{26}  yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.
