Near-Infrared Perylenecarboximide Fluorophores for Live-Cell Super-Resolution Imaging

Organic near-infrared (NIR) photoblinking fluorophores are highly desirable for live-cell super-resolution imaging based on single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). Herein we introduce a novel small chromophore, PMIP, through the fusion of perylenecarboximide with 2,2-dimetheylpyrimidine. PMIP exhibits an emission maximum at 732 nm with a high fluorescence quantum yield of 60% in the wavelength range of 700-1000 nm and excellent photoblinking without any additives. With resorcinol-functionalized PMIP (PMIP-OH), NIR SMLM imaging of lysosomes is demonstrated for the first time in living mammalian cells under physiological conditions. Moreover, metabolically labeled nascent DNA is site-specifically detected using azido-functionalized PMIP (PMIP-N3) via click chemistry, thereby enabling the super-resolution imaging of nascent DNA in phosphate-buffered saline with a 9-fold improvement in spatial resolution. These results indicate the potential of PMIP-based NIR blinking fluorophores for biological applications of SMLM.

When increasing vegetable production may worsen food availability gaps: A simulation model in India

Translating agricultural productivity into food availability depends on food supply chains. Agricultural policy and research efforts promote increased horticultural crop production and yields, but the ability of low-resource food supply chains to handle increased volumes of perishable crops is not well understood. This study developed and used a discrete event simulation model to assess the impact of increased production of potato, onion, tomato, brinjal (eggplant), and cabbage on vegetable supply chains in Odisha, India. Odisha serves as an exemplar of vegetable supply chain challenges in many low-resource settings. Model results demonstrated that in response to increasing vegetable production 1.25-5x baseline amounts, demand fulfillment at the retail level fluctuated by + 3% to -4% from baseline; in other words, any improvements in vegetable availability for consumers were disproportionately low compared to the magnitude of increased production, and in some cases increased production worsened demand fulfillment. Increasing vegetable production led to disproportionately high rates of postharvest loss: for brinjal, for example, doubling agricultural production led to a 3% increase in demand fulfillment and a 19% increase in supply chain losses. The majority of postharvest losses occurred as vegetables accumulated and expired during wholesale-to-wholesale trade. In order to avoid inadvertently exacerbating postharvest losses, efforts to address food security through agriculture need to ensure that low-resource supply chains can handle increased productivity. Supply chain improvements should consider the constraints of different types of perishable vegetables, and they may need to go beyond structural improvements to include networks of communication and trade.

A Comparative Evaluation of Post-operative Pain Management Using Erector Spinae Plane Block and Oblique Transverse Abdominis Plane Block in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Introduction Acute pain following laparoscopic surgeries interferes with the rehabilitation of the patient. Knowledge about the pain pathway from a particular area helps in blocking pain transmission at different sites. Ultrasonography (USG)-guided peripheral nerve blocks help in controlling pain better than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and opioids since they directly act by interrupting the pain pathway and interfere less with the physiology of the body. This study was planned with the objectives to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of USG-guided erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and oblique subcostal transversus abdominis plane (OSTAP) block in patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, to compare the analgesic requirements in both groups, and to compare the VAS scores in both groups. Materials and methods A total of 138 patients were randomized into two groups, with 69 patients in each group, and received either bilateral ESP (group 'E') or bilateral OSTAP (group 'O'). Those in group E received the block at the T7 level, and those in group O received the block in the subcostal region, with 20 ml of 0.2% ropivacaine and 4 mg of dexamethasone. The procedures were done after securing the airway. The total analgesic requirement and visual analogue scale (VAS) scoring in the first 24 hours post-operatively were observed, along with intra-operative opioid consumption. The opioid requirement, block-related complications, and patient feedback regarding post-operative pain control were also assessed. The results were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Continuous and categorical data were analyzed using appropriate statistical analysis. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The VAS scores were significantly lower during the first post-operative day in group E than in group O. In group E, VAS scoring was less than 4 for the first 24 hours post-surgery. In group O, VAS scores remained greater than or equal to 4 after four hours post-surgery, thereby indicating that the patients required opioids. Only seven patients in group E received tramadol, compared to 62 patients in group O. The mean tramadol requirement of seven patients in group 'E' was 65.71 ± 26.3 mg, and the mean tramadol requirement of 62 patients was 114.56 ± 36.8 mg (p = 0.0012). The patients in group 'O' demanded tramadol significantly more times than those in group 'E'. Conclusion It was concluded that USG-guided ESP block provides better pain control and decreases consumption of opioids post-operatively than OSTAP block in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgeries. The block was found to be safe with no adverse effects, therefore it can be a part of multimodal analgesia.

Challenges and barriers to immunization during COVID-19: An experience of parents/caregivers from a well-baby clinic of a tertiary care hospital of Eastern India

Background

Immunization in children is one of the best methods of preventing vaccine preventable diseases.With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,there have been disruptions in vaccine supply,its uptake and perception towards routine immunization, globally and in India. This study was planned to identify the challenges faced by the parents, the perceived barriers towards childhood immunization and perception regarding vaccination during the ongoing pandemic.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was carried out in the well-baby clinic, providing immunization services. The informants were parents/caregivers of under-five children accompanying their children to the well-baby clinic within the study period. Data was collected using a semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire and analysed using Epi-info software and p value less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.

Results

Delay in immunization was noted in 62% of the children. The challenges stated by respondents for delay in immunization during this pandemic mostly were "fear about getting infected" (30%) and "someone instructed them not to take the child to the hospital if not ill" (13%). The most common perceived barriers were 'no vaccination sites were open' or 'did not know where the baby can be vaccinated'. 'Child should receive all vaccines'(99%) and 'safety is more important than vaccination' (83%)was the perception of respondents about immunization during the pandemic.

Conclusion

Though the respondents were aware of the need for timely vaccinations of their children, still a substantial delay was seen among majority of them due to fear of getting infected and unavailability of vaccines.

A Comparison of Hemodynamic Changes Between the Use of Etomidate and Propofol as Induction Agents for Anesthesia in Daycare Surgeries

Background and objective The development of modern anesthetic agents has made it possible to conduct pain-free surgical procedures. The role of the anesthetist in choosing a suitable anesthetic agent to provide a good anesthetic and sedative effect is very important in any surgical procedure. There is always a degree of risk involved as the hemodynamic parameters may be altered. This study aimed to compare the hemodynamic changes and respiratory effects between the use of etomidate and propofol for the induction of general anesthesia (GA) as well as to compare the side effects of both drugs in daycare surgeries. Methods The study was a parallel-design, randomized, double-blinded control trial conducted over a period of three years among patients undergoing elective daycare surgeries under GA. The patients were classified into two groups depending on the type of drug received: Group A or the propofol group and Group B or the etomidate group. Randomization was done by computer-generated random number generator software. A total of 174 patients were selected (87 in each group) at a ratio of 1:1. A baseline evaluation of the hemodynamic parameters was done followed by continuous monitoring. Results The age, weight, and gender distribution of the patients in both groups were comparable. Significant hemodynamic changes were observed following induction in Group A. The fall in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in Group A following induction was found to be statistically significant (p<0.00). The rise in heart rate was almost similar in both groups, with Group A demonstrating a slightly higher rate. There were fewer signs of respiratory depression in Group B. The major side effects observed after induction were myoclonus, which was more prevalent in Group B patients (21.84%), and pain at the injection site, which was observed more frequently in Group A (17.1%). Conclusion  Based on our findings, etomidate is a drug with better hemodynamic stability and less pain at the site of injection compared to propofol. Hence, it may be a better induction agent in daycare surgeries.

Adaptive Capon beamforming for lensless electron cyclotron emission imaging with high spatial resolution

Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging diagnostics incorporating a lensless approach have been developed for measurements involving active spatial selectivity and direction-of-arrival estimation. The Capon method for adaptive-array analysis was proposed to improve the spatial resolution of the two-dimensional ECE imaging technique. Broadband noise source emissions were used to simulate the ECE to verify the practical effectiveness of the Capon method in the ECE imaging. Multiple noise source emission positions were properly estimated with a high spatial resolution using the Capon method.

Lichen planus drugs re-purposing as potential anti COVID-19 therapeutics through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation approach

BACKGROUND AND AIM

The present study intends to investigate COVID-19 by targeting their main proteins with 17 selected drugs used for treating Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) which is a chronic muco-cutaneous disorder. Here, an attempt is made to gain better insight into the structure of various drugs targeting specific proteins which will be helpful in developing drugs useful for therapeutic and preventive measures.

METHOD

In silico studies, molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations were performed to repurpose the therapeutic drugs (n = 17) which were used to treat OLP against COVID-19. In addition, the maximum binding affinities of the key protein spike glycoprotein, main-protease (M^pro) of coronavirus, and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE-2) in the human body were evaluated with the selected drugs.

RESULTS

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) showed the highest docking values among the drugs selected for repurposing. Among the target proteins, EGCG has shown maximum binding affinity with ACE-2 receptor. Further, according to the molecular dynamic simulation studies, EGCG has shown the least conformational fluctuations with M^pro.

CONCLUSION

EGCG can be a potential inhibitor drug which can bind with ACE-2 receptor thus inhibiting the interaction of mainly M^pro protein and spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2.

RELEVANCE FOR PATIENTS

EGCG, a natural compound shows antiviral potential having considerably high affinity and stability with SARS-CoV-2. It might be further employed as a lead drug against selective inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 for the therapeutic management of COVID-19 patients after necessary clinical trials.

Continuing perioperative estrogen therapy does not increase venous thromboembolic events in transgender patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is to compare the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) between patients suspending and continuing estrogen therapy perioperatively, in male to female gender-affirming surgery (vaginoplasty).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research on male to female gender-affirming study, which compared the risk of VTE among the usage of estrogen perioperatively.

RESULTS

A total of 209 studies were identified as potentially eligible among PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library databases. Among the studies, 191 studies were excluded due to their abstract inappropriateness. Out of the remaining 18 studies, only 3 articles were eligible and were finally included. Meta-analysis was performed and showed odds ratio of 0.77 (95% CI: 0.04, 14.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Perioperative estrogen therapy does not increase VTE risk on male to female gender-affirming surgery. Therefore, estrogen therapy may be continued perioperatively in vaginoplasty. More prospective studies are needed.

Subpicosecond Hot Hole Transfer in a Graphene Quantum Dot Composite with High Efficiency

Extraction of hot carriers is of prime importance because of its potential to overcome the energy loss that limits the efficiency of an optoelectronic device. Employing a femtosecond upconversion setup, herein we report a few picoseconds carrier cooling time of colloidal graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is at least an order of magnitude slower compared to that in its bulk form. A slower carrier cooling time of GQDs compared to that of the other semiconductor quantum dots and their bulk materials is indeed a coveted property of GQDs that would allow one easy harvesting of high energy species employing a suitable molecular system as shown in this study. A subpicosecond hot hole transfer time scale has been achieved in a GQD-molecular system composite with high transfer efficiency. Our finding suggests a dramatic enhancement of the efficiency of GQD based optoelectronic devices can possibly be a reality.

Assessment of Preoperative Anxiety among Patients Attending a Preanaesthetic Check-up Clinic at a Tertiary Care Hospital, Odisha: A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction: Anxiety during the preoperative period predisposes to postoperative complications such as increase in postoperative pain, delay of healing and prolonged hospital stay.Further, patients with a high level of preoperative anxiety require higher doses of anaesthetic agents and recover poorly. Due to these factors, each tertiary care hospital should have an idea about the prevalence of preoperative anxiety in their setting, so that appropriate preventive measures can be planned. Aim: To assess the prevalence of preoperative anxiety in patients attending the Preanaesthetic Check-up (PAC) clinic for elective surgeries and to find out the factors associated with anxiety among them. Materials and Methods: This hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in the PAC Clinic at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (tertiary care hospital), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, from May to July 2018. The study included hundred patients, using convenient sampling technique, undergoing preanaesthetic check-up, before the proposed elective surgeries. A researcher made study tool, using Hamilton-A scale for assessing preoperative anxiety was used. Data was analysed using Epi Info software. A p-value <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Among the sampled 100 study participants, preoperative anxiety was found to be present in 97, 72 of the study participants had mild anxiety, 14 had mild to moderate and 11 moderate to severe anxiety. Of the 97 participants who had preoperative anxiety, 7 (14.89%) of the females had moderate to severe anxiety as compared to 4 (8%) of males. The age group of 60-69 years and Christianity religion were found to be statistically significant factors associated with anxiety in the study population. Conclusion: The prevalence of preoperative anxiety among the study participants was found to be high. Preventive measures like counselling sessions to address their apprehensions should be planned to decrease the anxiety.

Femtosecond Upconversion Study of Interfacial Electron Transfer from Photoexcited CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystal to Rhodamine 6G

Photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from an excited-state CsPbBr₃ nanocrystal (NC) to rhodamine 6G (r6G) is studied in toluene using different fluorescence-based techniques. Because of weak solubility of r6G in toluene, excess r6G molecules adsorb at NC surface which result in a much slower rotational diffusion time scale of r6G in the presence of NCs. Study of intrinsic PET benefits from the soft molecular interactions leading to donor (NC)-acceptor (r6G) complex formation, where solvent diffusion parameters would not play any role in the PET kinetics. Femtosecond transients of NCs are nicely fit to a Poisson expression originally proposed by Tachiya. Conclusive fittings to the temperature dependence quenching data reveal two interesting observations: (1) Even though the average number of surface trap state in a NC does not change with temperature (5-60 °C), the trap-state-induced quenching time scale is accelerated with increase in temperature, pointing toward a more efficient trapping at higher temperature. (ii) In the presence of r6G, a fast (∼150 ps per r6G molecule) interfacial PET time scale is observed, which remains unaffected by temperature (5-60 °C). Our findings demonstrate that even a simple "perovskite NC-electron acceptor" composite like that in the present study can ensure a rapid interfacial charge separation. Such information will help us to realize the actual potential of perovskites NCs in their real applications.

Revealing Explicit Microsecond Carrier Diffusion from One Emission Center to Another in an All-Inorganic Perovskite Nanocrystal

Blinking of freely diffusing CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs) is studied using fluorescence lifetime correlation spectroscopy (FLCS). Emitted photons from each NCs are assigned to an emission state (exciton or trap) based on their lifetime. Subsequently, an intrastate autocorrelation function (ACF) and an interstate cross-correlation function (CCF) are constructed. Fitting of the AFCs with an analytical model shows that, at low excitation power, the microsecond blinking timescale of the exciton state matches well with that of the trap state. Most interestingly, both of those timescales further correlate with the microsecond growth timescale of the CCF. The strong anti-correlation of the CCF along with the stretched exponential nature of the blinking kinetics confirms the involvement of carrier diffusion and dispersive trap states in NC blinking. At high excitation power, enhanced sample heterogeneity causes a more dispersive blinking. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a NC blinking study using a single-molecule-based FLCS technique.

Induced Hypotension in Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: A Comparative Study of Dexmedetomidine and Esmolol

Introduction

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is one of the common surgical procedures requiring hypotensive anesthesia; many agents have been tried to reduce the amount of blood loss. This study aims at comparing the efficacy of two agents for providing deliberate hypotension.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of esmolol and of dexmedetomidine and compare which one of the two is a better agent to produce induced hypotension during FESS.

Materials and methods

This was a comparative study conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Odisha, India. There were two study groups with 30 participants each who were given either esmolol or dexmedetomidine (group E and group DEX, respectively).

Results

Esmolol is an anti-hypertensive agent with better hemodynamic stability. The amount of drug and dose requirement was low in group DEX. The emergence time, sedation score, and time to first analgesic request were found to be highly statistically significant in group DEX.

Conclusion

Dexmedetomidine was found to be a better agent at controlling intra-operative blood pressure than esmolol and had beneficial effects on recovery from anesthesia and analgesia.

An epidemiological study on depression among women during postpartum period in an urban slum of Bhubaneswar

Background and Aims:

Depression accounts for the greatest burden of all mental health problems, and is expected to become the second-highest among all health problems by 2020. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health problem with a peak incidence at 4-6 weeks postpartum, affecting 22% of women within a year of childbirth in India. It has an impact on the mother, her partner, the family, mother-baby bonding and the long-term emotional and cognitive development of the baby. The aim of the study was to: 1.To find out the prevalence of depression among women during the postpartum period 2.To identify the factors associated with depressive symptoms among them.

Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted in an urban slum of Bhubaneswar from July 2017 to January 2018, among a sample of 60 postnatal mothers who had delivered in the last six months; selected by simple random sampling technique. Edinburgh Postnatal depression scale (EPDS) was used to identify mothers at risk of postnatal depression. A score of ≥13 was considered as positive for depressive symptoms.

Results:

The prevalence of PPD was found to be 8.57%. Religion was found to be a statistically significant factor associated with PPD. Other factors like literacy status, socio-economic status, high parity, sex of the newborn, mode of delivery were also found to have an association with PPD.

Conclusion:

This study identified certain socio-demographic and obstetric risk factors for postnatal depressive symptoms in a community setting of an urban slum; screening of risk factors will help in designing preventive strategies for identifying PPD.

P5540Familial clustering of spontaneous coronary artery dissection

Background

There is increasing evidence that patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) have an underlying genetic susceptibility (Goel et al JAMA Intern Med175:821–826, 2015). Moreover, in a collaborative study involving 1,055 SCAD cases and 7,190 controls, we recently reported the first risk allele for SCAD, a variant (rs9349379-A) in the PHACTR1/EDN1 genetic locus (Adlam et al J Amer Coll Cardiol73:58–66, 2019).

Purpose

We sought to determine the clinical characteristics and initial genetic data for 11 families, in which more than one member has had an episode of SCAD.

Methods

Participants were recruited largely via a social media platform. Informed consent was obtained in all cases for analysis of genetic information using whole genome sequencing, as well as collection of clinical information. SCAD was confirmed by review of coronary angiogram images and clinical data collected by phone interview, as well as review of specialist letters and hospital records.

Results

Of 235 participants recruited to date, 23 cases showed familial clustering involving sister-sister pairs in six families, three first-degree cousins in one family (picture), two first-degree cousins in two families, a mother-son pair, and a family with concordant monozygotic twins, that is both twins having had SCAD. In an additional family, SCAD is discordant in monozygotic twins. A comparison of symptoms, age at SCAD, clinical syndrome, cardiovascular risk factors, SCAD risk factors, environmental triggers, SCAD location, acute management, left ventricular function and recurrent SCAD events in these families versus isolated cases, will be presented. Three sister-sister pairs have undergone whole genome sequencing and these data sets are undergoing segregation analysis to identify rare variants that are present exclusively in affected family members.

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this is the largest assembly of SCAD cases with familial clustering reported to date. It provides strong evidence supporting an underlying genetic basis for SCAD, which most likely is a multi-genic disorder that also involves important gene-environment interactions.

Ground-State Heterogeneity along with Fluorescent Byproducts Causes Excitation-Dependent Fluorescence and Time-Dependent Spectral Migration in Citric Acid-Derived Carbon Dots

The integrity of fluorescent carbon dot (FCD) emission deserves its highest appreciation when sample purification is performed with extreme care. Several controversial phenomena of FCD fluorescence including excitation-dependent emission, spectral migration with time, and thereby violation of the Kasha-Vavilov rule, which sparked intense debate during recent reports, disappeared when we rigorously purified the as-synthesized FCD sample. Purification was performed by first visual silica column chromatography (observing the emissions under UV illumination) and subsequently prolonged membrane dialysis. Most of the surprising phenomena of FCD fluorescence reported earlier apparently arose from ground-state spectral heterogeneity of FCD sample containing a large amount of fluorescent impurities (mostly polymeric or oligomeric in nature). Observation of our ensemble spectroscopic measurements, albeit nicely matched with recent reports based on single-particle experiments, differed largely from that of other ensemble measurements. Our results reconciled a number of long-standing controversies on FCD emission mostly by emphasizing the urgency of sample purification with more scientific rigor.

A study on the health seeking behavior among caregivers of under-five children in an urban slum of Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Background:

The under-five children are a vulnerable age group; their mortality reflecting a country's overall development. Timely and appropriate healthcare seeking behavior, if practiced by caregivers, can have a significant impact on survival. The slum dwellers have poor health-seeking behavior due to their lower socioeconomic status, prevailing malnutrition, poor immunization status, overcrowding, poor sanitation, personal and cultural practices, beliefs, and attitude toward healthcare providers.

Objectives:

(1) To assess the health-seeking behavior among caregivers of under-five children during acute childhood illness (2) To find out the factors associated with their treatment-seeking behavior.

Materials and Methods:

A community-based cross-sectional study, among 260 caregivers, in the field practice area of Urban Health and Training Centre of a medical college was undertaken from September 1, 2016 to February 28, 2017, using a pretested semistructured questionnaire after obtaining a list of under-fives from the female health worker.

Results:

In total, 260 caregivers with mean of 26.61 ± 4.31 years participated in the study, 77.69% reported of some health morbidity. Around 21.92% of the caregivers gave primary care at home, 33.46% visited a chemist, and 33.08% attended health facility nearby. About 79.23% sought healthcare immediately following illness. Of the remaining 20.77% who did not seek medical advice, 75.93% used home remedies. Significant association was found between the age of the mother, educational status of the mother, religion, birth order of the child and socioeconomic status of the caregivers, and appropriate treatment seeking behavior during an episode of acute illness.

Conclusion:

This study attempted to identify health-seeking behavior of caregivers for children under-five and the determinants of appropriate treatment-seeking behavior. The knowledge of signs and symptoms of ill-health can reduce morbidity and mortality; however, continuous education of caregivers for recognition of symptoms and the need to seek appropriate medical care is needed. Government facility was the preferred choice for the population in the sampled slum. Treatment-seeking behavior was good among the respondents with majority having appropriate behavior. Measures can be taken to help promote awareness among those who did not have appropriate treatment seeking behavior.

Investigation of Upconversion, downshifting and quantum -cutting behavior of Eu3+, Yb3+, Bi3+ co-doped LaNbO4 phosphor as a spectral conversion material

This work presents the spectral conversion characteristics [upconversion (UC), downshifting (DS) and quantum-cutting (QC) optical processes] of Eu³⁺, Yb³⁺ and Bi³⁺ co-doped LaNbO₄ (LBO) phosphor samples synthesized by solid state reaction technique. The crystal structure and the pure phase formation have been confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The surface morphology and particle size are studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The rarely observed intense red UC emission from Eu³⁺ ion has been successfully obtained in Eu³⁺/Yb³⁺ co-doped LaNbO₄ phosphor (on excitation with 980 nm) by optimizing the concentrations of Eu³⁺ and Yb³⁺ ions. The downshifting (DS) behavior has been studied by photoluminescence (PL) measurements on excitation with 265 nm wavelength from a Xe lamp source. A broad blue emission in the region 300-550 nm with its maximum ∼415 nm due to charge transfer band (CTB) of the host and large number of sharp peaks due to f-f transitions of Eu³⁺ ion have been observed. The energy transfer has been observed from (NbO₄)^3- to Eu³⁺ ion and the fluorescence emission has been optimized by varying the concentration of Eu³⁺ ion. An intense red emission has also been observed corresponding to ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ transition of Eu³⁺ ion at 611 nm in LBO: 0.09Eu³⁺ phosphor on excitation with 394 nm. The luminescence properties of Eu³⁺ ion are enhanced further through the sensitization effect of Bi³⁺ ion. The near infra-red (NIR) quantum cutting (QC) behavior due to Yb³⁺ ion has been monitored on excitation with 265 as well as 394 nm. The NIR QC is observed due to ²F_5/2 → ²F_7/2 transition of Yb³⁺ ion via co-operative energy transfer (CET) process from (NbO₄)^3- as well as Eu³⁺ ions to Yb³⁺ ion. This multimodal behavior (UC, DS and QC) makes this a promising phosphor material for multi-purpose spectral converter.

A study on awareness and utilization of Mission Indradhanush in an urban slum of Bhubaneswar

Background:

India records 5 lakh child-deaths annually due to vaccine preventable diseases. As a strategic endeavor, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, launched Mission Indradhanush in December 2014 to achieve more than 90% full immunization coverage by the year 2020.

Objectives:

To assess the awareness of the respondents about Mission Indradhanush, to assess their attitude and practices regarding childhood immunization, and to determine the association between knowledge and practice with selected variables.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional study was undertaken from June to September 2017 among mothers with children aged 12–23 months in urban slums under field practice area of Community Medicine Department, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar.

Results:

Mean age of the children was 17.23 ± 3.43 months; 65% were males and 35% females. Mean age of the respondents was 24.48 ± 3.97 years; 68% were literate and 94% were Hindus. Majority (76%) belonged to upper-lower Kuppuswamy socio-economic status scale. Only 10% had heard about Mission Indradhanush; health worker (90%) being the most common source of information. A total of 91% believed that vaccination prevented disease. A total of 96% believed that immunization was important for their children. A total of 73% had the maternal and child protection card with them. A total of 72% of children were fully immunized. Of the 28% partially vaccinated children, only 12.5% had heard about Mission Indradhanush. Reasons stated for partial immunization were mother too busy, child illness, and lack of information.

Conclusion:

Very few participants had heard about Mission Indradhanush in this study although most of them were aware of immunization services. Strengthening of Information, Education, Communication (IEC) activities regarding the program—Mission Indradhanush—needs attention. The immunization coverage was satisfactory.

Aberration control in adaptive optics: a numerical study of arbitrarily deformable liquid lenses

By means of numerical simulations, using a computational fluid dynamics software together with an optical ray tracing analysis platform, we show that we can tune various optical aberrations by electrically manipulating the shape of liquid lenses using one hundred individually addressable electrodes. To demonstrate the flexibility of our design, we define electrode patterns based on specific Zernike modes and show that aspherical, cylindrical and decentered shapes of liquid lenses can be produced. Using different voltages, we evaluate the tuning range of spherical aberration (Z11), astigmatism (Z5 and Z6) and coma (Z7), while a hydrostatic pressure is applied to control the average curvature of a microlens with a diameter of 1mm. Upon activating all electrodes simultaneously spherical aberrations of 0.15 waves at a pressure of 30Pa can be suppressed almost completely for the highest voltages applied. For astigmatic and comatic patterns, the values of Z5, Z6 and Z7 increase monotonically with the voltage reaching values up to 0.06, 0.06 and 0.2 waves, respectively. Spot diagrams, wavefront maps and modulation transfer function are reported to quantify the optical performance of each lens. Crosstalk and independence of tunability are discussed in the context of possible applications of the approach for general wavefront shaping.

Measurements of the [Formula: see text] production cross section in lepton+jets final states in pp collisions at 8 [Formula: see text] and ratio of 8 to 7 [Formula: see text] cross sections

A measurement of the top quark pair production ([Formula: see text]) cross section in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of 8[Formula: see text] is presented using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6[Formula: see text]. This analysis is performed in the [Formula: see text] decay channels with one isolated, high transverse momentum electron or muon and at least four jets, at least one of which is required to be identified as originating from hadronization of a b quark. The calibration of the jet energy scale and the efficiency of b jet identification are determined from data. The measured [Formula: see text] cross section is [Formula: see text]. This measurement is compared with an analysis of 7[Formula: see text] data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0[Formula: see text], to determine the ratio of 8[Formula: see text] to 7[Formula: see text] cross sections, which is found to be [Formula: see text]. The measurements are in agreement with QCD predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order.
