Nanotechnological approaches for management of soil-borne plant pathogens

Soil borne pathogens are significant contributor of plant yield loss globally. The constraints in early diagnosis, wide host range, longer persistence in soil makes their management cumbersome and difficult. Therefore, it is crucial to devise innovative and effective management strategy to combat the losses caused by soil borne diseases. The use of chemical pesticides is the mainstay of current plant disease management practices that potentially cause ecological imbalance. Nanotechnology presents a suitable alternative to overcome the challenges associated with diagnosis and management of soil-borne plant pathogens. This review explores the use of nanotechnology for the management of soil-borne diseases using a variety of strategies, such as nanoparticles acting as a protectant, as carriers of actives like pesticides, fertilizers, antimicrobials, and microbes or by promoting plant growth and development. Nanotechnology can also be used for precise and accurate detection of soil-borne pathogens for devising efficient management strategy. The unique physico-chemical properties of nanoparticles allow greater penetration and interaction with biological membrane thereby increasing its efficacy and releasability. However, the nanoscience specifically agricultural nanotechnology is still in its toddler stage and to realize its full potential, extensive field trials, utilization of pest crop host system and toxicological studies are essential to tackle the fundamental queries associated with development of commercial nano-formulations.

Mitigation of drought stress in rice crop with plant growth-promoting abiotic stress-tolerant rice phyllosphere bacteria

In the search of effective drought-alleviating and growth-promoting phyllosphere bacteria, a total of 44 bacterial isolates were isolated from the leaf surface of drought-tolerant rice varieties, Mattaikar, Nootripattu, Anna R(4), and PMK3, and screened for their abiotic stress tolerance by subjecting their growth medium to temperature, salinity, and osmotic stress. Only eight isolates were found to grow and proliferate under different abiotic stress conditions. These isolates were identified using 16S ribosomal DNA gene sequence and submitted to the NCBI database. All the bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus sp., except PB24, which was identified as Staphylococcus sp., and these isolates were further screened for plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits such as IAA production, GA production, ACC deaminase activity, and exopolysaccharide production under three different osmotic stress conditions adjusted using polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000). Additionally, mineral solubilization was measured under the normal condition. Bacillus endophyticus PB3, Bacillus altitudinis PB46, and Bacillus megaterium PB50 were found to have multifarious PGP traits. Consecutively, the performance of an individual strain to improve the plant growth was investigated under the osmotic stress (25% PEG 6000) and nonstress condition by inoculating them into rice seeds using hydroponics culture. Furthermore, the drought-alleviating potency of bacterial strains was assessed in the rice plants using pot experiment (-1.2 MPa) through bacterial foliar application during the reproductive stage. Finally, as a result of seed inoculation and foliar spray, the application of B. megaterium PB50 significantly improved the plant growth under osmotic stress, protected plants from physical drought through stomatal closure, and improved carotenoid, total soluble sugars, and total protein content. Metabolites of PB50 were profiled under both stress and nonstress conditions using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy.

Antibacterial and toxicity evaluation of C-phycocyanin and cell extract of filamentous freshwater cyanobacterium-Westiellopsis sps

In this study the culture filtrate and C-phycocyanin obtained from filamentous fresh water cyanobacterium Westiellopsis sps were tested for their antibacterial activity against three different bacterial cultures: Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas sps and Xanthomonas sps. The growth of all bacterial strains tested was inhibited by the culture filtrate and C-phycocyanin. The diameter of inhibition zones varied from 1.3 to 13.2 mm and from 2.2 to 13.1 mm for the culture filtrate and C-phycocyanin, respectively. It is therefore suggested that extracts from the Westiellopsis sps could be used traditionally in the treatment of bacterial infections. Bioassay studies of silkworm showed that there was no symptom of ill health after feeding the phycocyanin treated leaves and the body weight and silk gland weight of the silkworm increased with range of 65.0-102.6 mg and 209-240 mg respectively compared to the control.
