Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with Eight Years of IceCube Data

We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

eV-Scale Sterile Neutrino Search Using Eight Years of Atmospheric Muon Neutrino Data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100  eV^{2}. The best-fit point is found to be at sin^{2}(2θ_{24})=0.10 and Δm_{41}^{2}=4.5  eV^{2}, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a p value of 8.0%.

Characteristics of the Diffuse Astrophysical Electron and Tau Neutrino Flux with Six Years of IceCube High Energy Cascade Data

We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of ϕ_{astro}=1.66_{-0.27}^{+0.25} at E_{0}=100  TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ∼100  TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ∼100  TeV remains a puzzle. In order to not violate the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background as measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, it suggests the existence of astrophysical neutrino sources characterized by dense environments which are opaque to gamma rays.

Time-Integrated Neutrino Source Searches with 10 Years of IceCube Data

This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1  TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Association of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms with colon cancer

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we investigated the association of two vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms BsmI and TaqI with colon cancer in a Caucasian population.

METHODS

The VDR gene polymorphisms BsmI and TaqI were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-genotyping assays by using endonucleases BsmI and TaqI, and an agarose gel electrophoresis technique in a series of 43 colon cancer patients and 42 healthy controls.

RESULTS

Allele frequencies and genotype distributions were found to be similar in both cases and controls. When homozygous carriers and heterozygotes were combined for each allele, alleles B and T were found to be more common in the control group (p=0.039, χ(2)=4.276, odds ratio [OR]=0.312, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.100-0.973 and p=0.039, χ(2)=4.258, OR=0.254, 95% CI=0.064-1.000, respectively). When genotypes were analyzed as pairs, the Bb/TT variant was higher in the control group at a statistically high significance (p=0.001, χ(2)=11.854, OR=0.122, 95% CI=0.032-0.460).

CONCLUSION

The alleles B and T and the genotype combination Bb/TT were found to be higher in the control group, and thus BsmI and TaqI polymorphisms of the VDR gene may be possible risk factors for colorectal carcinogenesis.

Mutation spectrum of fumarylacetoacetase gene and clinical aspects of tyrosinemia type I disease

Tyrosinemia type I (OMIM 276700) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency in the fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH) enzyme. This study examined the spectrum of FAH gene mutation in 32 patients with tyrosinemia type I. In addition, clinical and biochemical findings were evaluated to establish a genotype-phenotype relationship in the patients. Mutation screening was performed using a 50K custom-designed resequencing microarray chip (TR_06_01r520489, Affymetrix) and sequencing analysis. Of the 12 different mutations found, 6 are categorized as novel. Three of the mutations-IVS6-1G>A, D233V, and IVS3-3C>G-are the most common in Turkish patients, comprising 25%, 17.1%, and 12.5% of mutant alleles, respectively.Clinical evaluations suggest that the spectrum of symptoms observed in the patients with very early and early disease were of the more nonspecific form, whereas the patients with late-presenting disease had more of the distinctive form over the course of the disease. This study adds support to the notion that the D233V mutation is specific to the Turkish population.

The effect of melatonin on TNBS-induced colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease of the colon and rectum with an unknown etiology. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of melatonin administration on oxidative damage and apoptosis in 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis. Rats were divided into four groups as follows: Group 1 (n=8)-T-NBS colitis; Group 2 (n=8)--melatonin, 10 mg/kg/day ip, for 15 days in addition to TNBS; Group 3 (n=8)--melatonin alone, 10 mg/kg/day ip, for 15 days; and Group 4 (n=8)-isotonic saline solution, 1 ml/rat ip, for 15 days (sham control group). Colonic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and glutathione (GSH) levels are indicators of oxidative damage, while caspase-3 activities reveal the degree of apoptosis of the colonic tissue. In all TNBS-treated rats, colonic MPO activity and MDA levels were found to be increased significantly compared to those in the sham group. Colonic MPO activity and MDA levels were significantly lower in the melatonin treatment group compared to TNBS-treated rats. GSH levels of colonic tissues were found to be significantly lower in TNBS-treated rats compared to the sham group. Treatment with melatonin significantly increased GSH levels compared to those in TNBS-treated rats. Caspas-3 activity of colonic tissues was found to be significantly higher in TNBS-treated rats compared to the sham group. Treatment with melatonin significantly decreased caspase-3 activity compared to that in TNBS-treated rats. These results imply a reduction in mucosal damage due to anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of melatonin.

Comparison of caudal ropivacaine, ropivacaine plus ketamine and ropivacaine plus tramadol administration for postoperative analgesia in children

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of single-dose caudal ropivacaine, ropivacaine plus ketamine and ropivacaine plus tramadol in children for postoperative pain management.

METHODS

Following ethics committee approval and informed parental consent, 99 ASA PS I or II children, between 1 and 10 years of age, scheduled for elective inguinal hernia repair with general anaesthesia, were recruited. After induction of anaesthesia and placement of a laryngeal mask airway (LMATM), the patients were randomly divided into three groups to receive either caudal ropivacaine alone (0.4%, 2 mg x kg(-1)) in group R (n = 32) or ropivacaine (0.2%, 1 mg x kg(-1)) plus ketamine (0.25 mg x kg(-1)) in group RK (n = 33) or ropivacaine (0.2%, 1 mg x kg(-1)) plus tramadol (1 mg x kg(-1)) in group RT (n = 34) with a total volume of 0.5 ml x kg(-1). Systemic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), heart rate (HR), peripheral O2 saturation (SpO2), respiratory rate (RR), sedation and pain scores were recorded at 5, 10, 15 and 30 min, 1, 3, 4 and 6 h following recovery from anaesthesia. Pain was evaluated by Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Pain Scale, and sedation with a five-point sedation test.

RESULTS

No difference was found regarding age, weight and duration of operation between the groups (P > 0.05). No patient experienced hypotension, bradycardia or respiratory depression. Duration of analgesia was longer in group RT (1377 +/- 204 min) than group R (1006 +/- 506 min) (P = 0.001). In the tramadol group, fewer patients required supplementary analgesics in the first 24 h (P = 0.005). Sedation scores were below 2 in all groups. Incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was higher in group RT (eight patients) and group RK (seven patients) than group R (one patient, P = 0.032).

CONCLUSIONS

Ropivacaine (0.4%), ropivacaine (0.2%) plus ketamine (0.25 mg x kg(-1)) and ropivacaine (0.2%) plus tramadol (0.5 mg x kg(-1)) provided sufficient analgesia in children, but the duration of analgesia was longer in the RT group.

A comparative study on the analgesic effect of tramadol, tramadol plus magnesium, and tramadol plus ketamine for postoperative pain management after major abdominal surgery

BACKGROUND

We tested whether, after major abdominal surgery, the addition of magnesium or ketamine to tramadol for intravenous (IV) patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) improved analgesia and lowered pain scores, compared to a PCA containing only tramadol.

METHODS

Sixty-six patients were allocated randomly to receive a PCA with tramadol alone (T), tramadol plus magnesium (TM) or tramadol plus ketamin (TK), in a double-blind randomized study. Postoperative analgesia was started when the verbal rating scale (VRS) score was 2 or more. Following a loading dose of the study solution (which contained 1 mg/kg tramadol), a background infusion of 0.4 mg/kg/h was started. Patients were allowed to use bolus doses of 0.2 mg/kg every 20 min without a time limit. Discomfort, sedation, pain scores, total and bolus PCA tramadol consumption, and side-effects, were recorded for up to 24 h after the start of PCA.

RESULTS

Pain and discomfort scores were lower (P < 0.01) in groups TM and TK at 15, 30, 60 and 120 min than in group T. The addition of magnesium or ketamine significantly reduced the consumption of tramadol at 6, 12 and 24 h (P < 0.01). The incidence of nausea did not differ between the groups.

CONCLUSION

Adding magnesium or ketamine to tramadol improved analgesia and patient comfort and decreased the amount of tramadol required for postoperative pain management after major abdominal surgery.

Autonomic nervous system functions in childhood essential hypertension

The etiopathology of essential hypertension (EH) is still controversial, different pathologic mechanisms have been estimated as a cause of EH. One of these mechanisms is autonomic nervous system dysfunction (ANSD). Although there are different studies showing ANSD in adult EH, limited studies on ANSD in childhood EH are present. The present study was planned to investigate the role of ANSD in childhood EH. The study group (SG) consisted of 24 children with EH and the control group (CG) was 24 healthy children. Non-invasive autonomic nervous system function tests: the orthostatic test, Valsalva ratio, 30/15 ratio and heart rate responses to deep breathing were performed on members of both groups. The mean differences in systolic blood pressure between supine resting and standing positions in the study and control groups were significant (z = -2.577, P = 0.0051). The mean differences in diastolic blood pressure between supine resting and standing positions in SG and CG were found to be statistically meaningful (z = -2.722, P = 0.0033). The mean differences in heart rate variation during hyperventilation in SG and CG were significant (z = -2.54, P = 0.0055). The mean differences in the Valsalva ratio between SG and CG were not statistically meaningful (z = 1.52, P = 0.0643). The mean differences in the 30/15 ratio in SG and CG were not found to be significant (z = -1.455, P = 0.0735). In the light of these results, both sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system dysfunction in childhood essential hypertension were found.
