Disposition effect and reference points: An experimental study

This study calls into question the default computation of the disposition effect that uses the average purchase price as a reference point. We show, through a lab experiment, that the reference price of participants can change depending on the experimental behavioral design that is used. Our results show that for the control group, different reference prices do not show significant differences in the computation of the disposition effect, thus supporting the use of the average purchase price as a reference. However, this is not the case for participants in the treatment group. With the addition of experimental treatment concerning the disclosure of the final balance of the participants, the reference prices to compute the disposition effect showed statistically significant differences. The need to display their results caused these participants to use the first purchase price as a reference point when selling their assets.

Probing stress relaxation behavior in glassy methacrylate networks containing thio-carbamate additives

The incorporation of thiourethane prepolymer (TU) into either the organic phase or as a surface treatment for filler particles in composites reduces polymerization stress and improves fracture toughness. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the influence of the inclusion of thiourethanes on the resulting network of methacrylate-based materials polymerized via free-radical mechanisms. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to elucidate network parameters and potential stress relaxation behavior of these networks. TU oligomers were synthesized using a combination of trimethylol-tris-3-mercaptopropionate and dicyclohexylmethane 4,4'-diisocyanate and added into composite formulations at 20 wt% replacing part of the organic matrix and/or as TU-silanes used to functionalize filler particles (TU-matrix, TU-Sil or TU-matrix/sil). Materials not containing any form of TU were used as the control (in those cases, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate was used as the silane agent). Filler was added at 50 wt%. Degree of conversion was evaluated by near-IR spectroscopy, mechanical properties by 3-point bending and rotational rheometry. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to obtain network parameters (glass transition temperature (Tg), storage modulus, cross-link density, and breadth of tan delta a proxy for network homogeneity - temperature sweep experiments) and to evaluate the potential for network relaxation (stress relaxation). TU-containing formulations showed 10% higher DC than the control. The time to reach storage/loss modulus crossover in the rheometer experiments was significantly longer for TU-matrix and TU-matrix/sil in comparison with the control (21.6, 27.9, and 5.1 s, respectively). TU-matrix and TU-matrix/sil presented significant lower Tg than the control (151.5, 153.8, and 161.3 °C, respectively). There were no statistical differences among the groups in terms of shear modulus, cross-link density, breadth of tan delta, flexural strength/modulus, and toughness. For at least one group (TU-matrix/sil), the relaxation time was four times faster than for the control at 105 °C. The addition of TU additives into dental polymers resulted in a stark reduction in the stress relaxation time. This behavior, in tandem with the network characterization and mechanical properties seems to indicate the TU networks undergo a variety of reversible associative and dissociative chemical reactions which facilitate enhanced stress relief.

Thiourethane filler functionalization for dental resin composites: Concentration-dependent effects on toughening, stress reduction and depth of cure

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to modify the surface of fillers used in dental composites by the synthesis of two novel thiourethane oligomeric silanes, used to functionalize the silica-containing inorganic particles. Several thiourethane silane concentrations were tested during the silanization process to systematically assess the effect of silane coverage on experimental composite conversion, polymerization stress and fracture toughness.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two different thiourethane silanes were synthesized based either on 1,6-hexanediol-diissocynate (HDDI), or 1,3-bis(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl) benzene (BDI). Conventional 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate was used as the control. Glass fillers were silanized with 1, 2 or 4 wt% of each thiourethane silane, then evaluated by thermogravimetrical analysis. Photopolymerizable resin composites were prepared with Bis-GMA/UDMA/TEGDMA and 50 wt% silanized glass filler. Polymerization kinetics and degree of conversion were tested using Near-IR. Bioman was used to test polymerization stress. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 5%).

RESULTS

The mass of silane coupled to the filler increased with the concentrations of thiourethane in the silanizing solution, as expected. Thiourethane-containing groups exhibited significantly higher degree of conversion compared to control groups, except for BDI 4%. HDDI 4%, BDI 2% and BDI 4% showed significantly lower polymerization stress than control groups. HDDI 4% exhibited significantly higher fracture toughness.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Novel filler functionalization with thiourethane silanes may be a promising alternative for improving dental composites properties by significantly increasing the degree of conversion, fracture toughness and reducing the polymerization stress.

Effect of different composite modulation protocols on the conversion and polymerization stress profile of bulk-filled resin restorations

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this in vitro study was to test the effect of different composite modulation protocols (pre-heating, light-curing time and oligomer addition) for bulk filling techniques on resin polymerization stress, intra-pulpal temperature change and degree of conversion.

METHODS

Class I cavities (4mm depth×5mm diameter) were prepared in 48 extracted third molars and divided in 6 groups. Restorations were completed with a single increment, according to the following groups: (1) Filtek Z250XT (room temperature - activated for 20s); (2) Filtek Z250XT (at room temperature - activated for 40s); (3) Filtek Z250XT (pre-heated at 68°C - activated for 20s); (4) Filtek Z250XT (pre-heated at 68°C - activated for 40s); (5) Filtek BulkFill (at room temperature - activated for 20s); (6) Filtek Z250XT (modified by the addition of a thio-urethane oligomer at room temperature - activated for 40s). Acoustic emission test was used as a real-time polymerization stress (PS) assessment. The intra-pulpal temperature change was recorded with a thermocouple and bottom/top degree of conversion (DC) measured by Raman spectroscopy. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α=5%).

RESULTS

Pre-heating the resin composite did not influence the intra-pulpal temperature (p=0.077). The thio-urethane-containing composite exhibited significantly less PS, due to a lower number of acoustic events. Groups with pre-heated composites did not result in significantly different PS. Filtek BulkFill and the thio-urethane experimental composite presented significantly higher DC.

SIGNIFICANCE

Resin composite pre-heating was not able to reduce polymerization stress in direct restorations. However, thio-urethane addition to a resin composite could reduce the polymerization stress while improving the DC.

An intense source for cold cluster ions of a specific composition

The demand for nanoscale materials of ultra-high purity and narrow size distribution is addressed. Clusters of Au, C₆₀, H₂O, and serine are produced inside helium nanodroplets using a combination of ionization, mass filtering, collisions with atomic or molecular vapor, and electrostatic extraction, in a specific and novel sequence. The helium droplets are produced in an expansion of cold helium gas through a nozzle into vacuum. The droplets are ionized by electron bombardment and subjected to a mass filter. The ionic and mass-selected helium droplets are then guided through a vacuum chamber filled with atomic or molecular vapor where they collide and "pick up" the vapor. The dopants then agglomerate inside the helium droplets around charge centers to singly charged clusters. Evaporation of the helium droplets is induced by collisions in a helium-filled radio frequency (RF)-hexapole, which liberates the cluster ions from the host droplets. The clusters are analyzed with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. It is demonstrated that using this sequence, the size distribution of the dopant cluster ions is distinctly narrower compared to ionization after pickup. Likewise, the ion cluster beam is more intense. The mass spectra show, as well, that ion clusters of the dopants can be produced with only few helium atoms attached, which will be important for messenger spectroscopy. All these findings are important for the scientific research of clusters and nanoscale materials in general.

Mixed cationic clusters of nitrogen and hydrogen

The addition of small impurities, such as a single proton charge carrier, in noble gas clusters has recently been shown to have considerable effects on their geometries and stabilities. Here, we report on a mass spectrometric study of cationic clusters of N2 molecules and the effects that adding hydrogen, in the form of D2, has on the systems. Protonated nitrogen clusters formed by the breakup of D2 are shown to have similar behaviors as protonated rare gas clusters. For larger systems consisting of different mixtures of intact N2 and D2, different molecular species are found to be interchangeable sometimes with regard to magic numbers. This is especially true for the (N2)n(D2)mD+ systems with n + m = 17, which is particularly abundant for all measured combinations of n and m.

Personality traits and investor profile analysis: A behavioral finance study

This study investigates which of four paradigms best portrays the risk profile manifest by investors in their financial asset investment decisions. The paradigms used to explain this profile were: prospect theory, investor profile analysis (IPA), the Big Five Personality Test, and the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). The choice of proxy for the risk preferences (profile) of a typical investor was defined by simulating investments in a laboratory setting. The results are analyzed using ordered logistic regression and show that people who have greater risk tolerance according to IPA, who violate prospect theory, and who have a high degree of openness to experience have the greatest probability of taking higher levels of risk in their investment decisions. With regard to the CRT, higher numbers of correct responses in this test has an inverse relationship with risk taking.

Psychophysiological correlates of the disposition effect

We assess the psychophysiological characteristics underlying the disposition effect and find that subjects showing greater disposition effect are those who sweat more and present lower body temperature and heart rate.

Lipoperoxidation products and thiol antioxidants in chromium exposed workers

Hexavalent chromium is an established carcinogenic agent, which is not directly reactive with DNA. Its genotoxicity involves a reduction step, producing reactive oxygen species and radicals, and also lower valence forms which form stable complexes with intracellular macromolecules. The trivalent form of chromium may directly react with the genetic material and has also been shown to generate oxidative damage in vitro. To further evaluate the importance of in vivo oxidative DNA damage in the toxicity of each valence form, we conducted a comparative study on hexavalent and trivalent chromium-exposed workers (manual metal arc stainless steel welders and leather tanning workers), focusing on the total oxidative status by quantifying the level of lipoperoxidation products in urine. Thiol antioxidants are important in response to oxidative stress, and therefore, the concentration of glutathione and cysteine in peripheral blood lymphocytes was also determined. Chromium exposure was evaluated by quantifying total chromium in plasma and urine. Both groups had a significant increase in lipid peroxidation products expressed as malondialdehyde (MDA) in urine (tanners 1.42 +/- 0.61 micromol/g creatinine, welders 1.67 +/- 1.13 micromol/g creatinine versus controls 0.81 +/- 0.26 micromol/g creatinine, P < 0.005 in both cases) but only welders had a significant decrease in glutathione concentration in lymphocytes. There was a positive correlation between chromium in plasma and urinary MDA in welders, but not in tanners. This work is part of a larger study of which major results have been published previously including cytogenetics and DNA-protein cross-links in workers exposed to the two different forms of chromium. These results are compared with the results of oxidative damage from this study.

Biodiversity assessment of benthic macroinvertebrates along a reservoir cascade in the lower São Francisco river (northeastern Brazil)

In order to verify the cascade-system effect in benthic macroinvertebrate communities, and the implications for policy making and proposals for conservation and sustainable use of the lower portion of São Francisco river basin (Bahia State, Brazil), a three-reservoir cascade system including two stretches downstream were studied during dry (June, 1997) and rainy (March, 1998) periods. The dominant groups found were Mollusca (Melanoides tuberculata), Oligochaeta, and Chironomidae larvae. Low Shannon-Wiener and Pielou index values were found, but with no significant difference between the sampling periods. However, density and taxonomic richness were significantly different (t(0.05; 31) = -2.1945; p < 0.05; e t(0.05; 31) = -3.0600; p < 0.01) between the sampling periods, with a reduction in the number of taxaand macroinvertebrate abundance during the rainy period. An increasing gradient in benthic macroinvertebrate community structures was noted along the reservoir cascade from the first reservoir (Apolônio Sales), followed by a decrease downstream from the third reservoir of the system (Xingó). Despite the negative consequences of rapid proliferation of dams, which have caused widespread loss of freshwater habitats, the reservoir cascade system promoted an increase in benthic macroinvertebrate diversity, due to water-quality improvement along the system.

Diversity assessment of benthic macroinvertebrates, yeasts, and microbiological indicators along a longitudinal gradient in Serra do Cipó, Brazil

The main goals of this study were: 1) to evaluate the structure, diversity, and functional trophic group composition of benthic macroinvertebrate communities; 2) to characterize water quality in the headwaters of the Doce river watershed, based on physical, chemical, and biological parameters (benthic macroinvertebrates, fecal coliforms, heterotrophic bacteria, and yeasts); and 3) to contribute to the knowledge of the structure and function of longitudinal gradients in lotic ecosystems in Brazil. A total of 60 benthic macroinvertebrate taxa were identified, the dominant group being the aquatic insects, with 50 families distributed in 8 orders. The dry period presented higher values of taxonomic richness and total density of benthic macroinvertebrates. A decreasing gradient was observed in these variable values from the 3rd order stretch down to the 6th order stretch. The highest Shannon-Wiener diversity values were found in the rainy period in the 3rd order stretches, which presented well-developed riparian forest. Besides the 3rd order stretches, the Pielou evenness index values were also high in the 6th order stretch. The collectors, together with the scrapers, predominated in the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in all river stretches, except in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th order stretches in the rainy period, where communities were dominated by filterers. The shredders and predators presented low densities for all river stretches. All microbiological variables presented low levels. Due to the high counts of heterotrophic bacteria and coliforms, the studied river stretches presented inadequate potability but adequate balneability levels. The results suggest that the structure, diversity, and composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities are influenced by the trophic resource availability, seasonality, and sediment heterogeneity. The microbiological results of this study allow inferring that the waters from Serra do Cipó have excellent potential for recreational use and as future sources of water for human consumption.

Reduction of Cr (VI) by cysteine: significance in human lymphocytes and formation of DNA damage in reactions with variable reduction rates

The induction of genotoxicity by Cr (VI) is dependent on its reductive activation inside the cell. Our recent studies have found that reduction of Cr (VI) by cysteine resulted in the formation of mutagenic Cr (III)-DNA adducts in the absence of oxidative DNA damage. In this work, we examined the formation of oxidative and Cr (III)-dependent types of DNA damage under a broader range of Cr (VI) and cysteine concentrations and investigated a potential role of this reducer in intracellular metabolism of Cr (VI). Peripheral lymphocytes from unexposed humans had 7.8-fold excess of glutathione over cysteine, whereas lymphocytes from stainless steel welders contained only 3 times higher amount of glutathione (p = 0.0009) which was entirely caused by the decrease in the concentration of glutathione. A strong correlation (r = 0.72) between the levels of both thiols was found in lymphocytes from controls. The number of DNA-protein crosslinks in lymphocytes from welders was 4.1 times higher than among controls, indicating the presence of Cr (VI)-dependent DNA damage. The average rate of Cr (VI) reduction by cysteine was approximately 5 times faster than that by glutathione. Higher reduction rate combined with the decrease in the intracellular concentration of glutathione should make cysteine a predominant Cr (VI)-reducing thiol in lymphocytes of welders. Analysis of the initial rates of Cr (VI) reduction by different concentrations of cysteine suggested the presence of one- and two-electron pathways, with one-electron mechanism dominating in the physiological range of concentrations. There was no detectable formation of DNA breaks or abasic sites under a broad range of Cr (VI) and cysteine concentrations, resulting in up to 68-fold differences in the rates of reduction and the production of as many as 3 Cr (III)-DNA adducts per 10 bp. The reactions with slow reduction rates (low concentrations of cysteine) led to the most extensive formation of Cr (III)-DNA adducts. In summary, these results further establish Cr (III)-DNA adducts as the major form of DNA damage resulting from Cr (VI) metabolism by cysteine. The role of cysteine in reduction of Cr (VI) becomes more significant under conditions of occupational exposure to Cr (VI)-containing welding fumes.

An AIDS prevention program for homeless youth

Larkin Street Youth Center (LSYC) is a multidisciplinary service center for homeless youth in San Francisco. This article describes the strategies developed by the medical clinic at LSYC for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus infection.
