Abstract
Background Previous works seem to agree in the higher mortality of cancer patients with COVID-19. Identifying potential prognostic factors upon admission could help identify patients with a poor prognosis. Methods We aimed to explore the characteristics and evolution of COVID-19 cancer patients admitted to hospital in a multicenter international registry (HOPE COVID-19). Our primary objective is to define those characteristics that allow us to identify cancer patients with a worse prognosis (mortality within 30 days after the diagnosis of COVID-19). Results 5838 patients have been collected in this registry, of whom 770 had cancer among their antecedents. In hospital mortality reached 258 patients (33.51%). The median was 75 years (65–82). Regarding the distribution by sex, 34.55% of the patients (266/770) were women. The distribution by type of cancer: genitourinary 238/745 (31.95%), digestive 124/745 (16.54%), hematologic 95/745 (12.75%). In multivariate regression analysis, factors that are independently associated with mortality at admission are: renal impairment (OR 3.45, CI 97.5% 1.85–6.58), heart disease (2.32, 1.47–3.66), liver disease (4.69, 1.94–11.62), partial dependence (2.41, 1.34–4.33), total dependence (7.21, 2.60–21.82), fatigue (1.84, 1.16–2.93), arthromialgias (0.45, 0.26–0.78), SatO2 < 92% (4.58, 2.97–7.17), elevated LDH (2.61, 1.51–4.69) and abnormal decreased Blood Pressure (3.57, 1.81–7.15). Analitical parameters are also significant altered. Conclusion In patients with cancer from the HOPE registry, 30-day mortality from any cause is high and is associated with easily identifiable clinical factors upon arrival at the hospital. Identifying these patients can help initiate more intensive treatments from the start and evaluate the prognosis of these patients.

Abstract
Searches for the lepton number violating K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+} decay and the lepton flavor violating K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+} and π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+} decays are reported using data collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. No evidence for these decays is found and upper limits of the branching ratios are obtained at 90% confidence level: B(K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+})<4.2×10^{-11}, B(K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+})<6.6×10^{-11} and B(π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+})<3.2×10^{-10}. These results improve by 1 order of magnitude over previous results for these decay modes.

Abstract
A comprehensive characterization of lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) clinical features is currently missing. We prospectively evaluated Caucasian patients with early‐stage LADC. Patients with LADC diagnosed between 2011 and 2015 were prospectively assessed for lung resection with curative intent. Fifty clinical, pathologic, radiologic, and molecular variables were recorded. Patients were followed till death/study conclusion. The main findings were compared to a separate cohort from France. Of 1943 patients evaluated, 366 were enrolled (18.8%; 181 female; 75 never‐smokers; 28% of registered Bavarian cases over the study period). Smoking and obstruction were significantly more prevalent in GLAD compared with adult Bavarians (P < 0.0001). Ever‐smoker tumors were preferentially localized to the upper lobes. We observed 120 relapses and 74 deaths over 704 cumulative follow‐up years. Median overall and disease‐free survival were >7.5 and 3.6 years, respectively. Patients aged <45 or >65 years, resected >60 days postdiagnosis, with abnormal FVC/DLCOVA, N2/N3 stage, or solid histology had significantly decreased survival estimates. These were fit into a weighted locoregional LADC death risk score that outperformed pTNM7 in predicting survival in the GLAD and in our second cohort. We define the clinical gestalt of locoregional LADC and provide a new clinical tool to predict survival, findings that may aid future management and research design.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to delineate the pattern of sympathetic innervation in the suprasesamoidean region of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) in horses with tendinopathy by immunohistochemical labelling for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and α-1 adrenergic receptor (α1-AR). Twelve forelimbs were obtained from 10 horses with DDFT tendinopathy and six feet obtained from six horses were used as healthy controls. Post-mortem radiographic, ultrasonographic and gross examinations were performed on the suprasesamoidean area of the DDFT to assess the presence of tendinopathy. Longitudinal sections were collected and processed. Lesions were classified as core lesions, dorsal border lesions and parasagittal oblique splits. Immunohistochemistry was performed and the degree of immunoreaction was classified as absent, mild or marked. Seven core lesions, four dorsal border lesions and one parasagittal oblique split were identified. There was no increased expression of sympathetic innervation in samples with a dorsal border lesion of the DDFT compared with healthy samples. In contrast, core lesions showed increased expression of α1-AR and reduced expression of TH, which supports the hypothesis of a compensatory imbalance between the sympathetic mediator and the sympathetic receptors as a cause or effect of structural damage. In addition, adrenergic activation could stimulate cell proliferation and differentiation within these lesions.

Is increased uric acid a risk factor or a defensive response? The Campania Salute Network. Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis 2018; 28:839-846. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Circulating uric acid (UA) is positively associated with body mass index (BMI), blood glucose, blood pressure (BP), markers of inflammation, and altered lipid profile. UA has also anti-oxidative properties which might be beneficial for cardiovascular (CV) system. It is still debated whether or not UA is independently associated with increased CV morbidity and/or mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS We studied prognostic impact of UA in 8833 hypertensive adults (mean age 53 ± 12 yrs, 3857 women) from the Campania Salute Network, without prevalent CV disease and more than stage 3 CKD. We calculated standardized UA Z-score, adjusted for age, sex, glomerular filtration rate, and BMI. Low and high UA and UA Z-score quartiles were compared to the 2 middle quartiles assumed to be "normal". Prevalence of obesity and diabetes was higher in low and high than in normal UA Z-score group (all p < 0.001). Systolic BP, left ventricular mass, carotid intima thickness were significantly higher and ejection fraction was reduced in the presence of high UA Z-score (all p < 0.001). Over 33-months average follow-up, incident major CV end-points (MACE) were not significantly different among low, normal and high UA or UA Z-score. In the latter analysis, however, incident MACE tended to be more frequent in the low than the high UA Z-score. Despite the results of multivariable analyses, the effect of less aggressive therapy in low UA Z-score cannot be excluded with certainty. CONCLUSION In treated hypertensive patients, high levels of UA normalized for major biological determinants do not independently predict CV outcome. CLINICALTRIALS. GOV IDENTIFIER NCT02211365.

Abstract
SummaryThe experimental results of chestwall reconstruction after partial sternectomy are reported. Four Beagle dogs underwent subtotal sternal resection and reconstruction by the implantation of a cortico-spongy bone heterograft, sandwiched between two layers of reabsorbable mesh.Major postoperative complications were not observed. The implant showed favorable mechanical and biological properties.Approximately six months after the operation two animals were euthanatized as were the remaining two after 12 months. Pathological examination showed good incorporation of the implanted bone with only partial resorption of its spongiosa.Compared with autologous bone transplants in humans, sterile bone heterograft seems to afford the same mechanical properties but with significantly reduced surgical trauma. The experimental results of chest-wall reconstruction after partial sternectomy in four Beagle dogs are reported.

Abstract
SummaryA young Dobermann Pincher dog with severe right hind leg lameness was admitted to our clinic. A complete radiographic examination showed the presence of cystic lesions in the right tibia and femur and polyostotic fibrous dysplasia was diagnosed. The distal tibial lesion, associated with an incomplete cortical fracture, was treated by surgical curettage and drainage of the cyst cavity. The other cystic lesions were treated conservatively.Radiological, morphological and histological examinations were then performed to evaluate the recovery phase. At six months, the surgically treated tibial lesion showed good ossification of the fibrous tissue. At twelve months, the examination showed complete healing of the tibial lesion but the femur lesions still had a cystic appearance. It appeared that surgical curettage of the cystic cavity alone enables recovery to be achieved in a relatively short period of time.Fibrous dysplasia in dogs is a seldom reported, condition which usually it has a benign outcome and mainly involves young subjects during their growth period. It is characterized by substitution of the bone with fibrous tissue thus favouring the occurrence of spontaneous fractures. The diagnosis of this disorder is based on radiographic reports and histological examination. The lesion can be treated with conservative therapy or by surgery, but the latter significantly reduced the period of recovery.

Abstract
Two cases of lateral condyle fracture of the femur associated with lateral patellar luxation in the dog are described in this paper. Lateral condyle fractures are rare and difficult to diagnose. If the fracture is not opportunely reduced, the instability of the stifle can cause lateral patellar luxation and severe degenerative joint disease.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the bacteria involved in equine omphalitis and their susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs, and consequently to provide guidelines concerning the most suitable treatment protocol in accordance with the clinical, ultrasound and laboratory findings. Forty foals aged between one and 30 days were evaluated in the course of this investigation. An ultrasound examination of all umbilical remnants was carried out carefully in all foals; umbilical swabs were collected for bacteriological examination, and blood samples were collected for blood culture from 19 foals with fever and abnormal blood values. Bacterial omphalitis was observed in 95 per cent of foals and bacterial septicaemia was diagnosed in 11 cases. Enterobacteria and coccoid Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more frequently than Serratia marcescens, Pantoea agglomerans and Trueperella pyogenes Omphalectomy was performed in 77.5 per cent of the foals examined; the remainder were treated only medically with antimicrobial drugs as recommended by antibiotic susceptibility testing performed for all bacteria isolated. Antibiotic therapy was successful in all foals that only received medical treatment; nevertheless, omphalectomy was performed in most cases particularly in situations of clinical decline despite antibiotic therapy and when involvement of umbilical vein, fever and joint disorders were observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been established that iodine prophylaxis prevents endemic goiter. In this study we reported the amount of iodized salt sold by the retailers of Cassino, a city of central Italy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of an iodine prophylaxis program started in 2005 on urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and thyroid volume (TV), and their correlation with anthropometric parameters in a population of schoolchildren. METHODS The study included 234 schoolchildren (119 girls and 115 boys) ages 13 to 14 y. Each student provided a morning urine sample for UIC determination, and TV was evaluated by ultrasonography. Body weight and height also were measured. Each participant completed a questionnaire reporting the presence of thyroid disease and the consumption of iodized salt and iodine-rich food. RESULTS The percentage of iodized salt sold by local markets was 42.4%. Median UIC in schoolchildren was 133.9 μg/L (range 33.2-819.5 μg/L), with 71 children having mild (range 50.1-99.9 μg/L) and 10 moderate (range 33.2-48.8 μg/L) iodine deficiency. Eleven children showed excessive iodine intake (range 300.4-819.5 μg/L). Median UIC was higher in children using iodized salt or consuming milk. Goiter prevalence was 3.8%. A positive correlation between TV and body weight, height, and surface was observed. CONCLUSIONS The data reported may suggest the presence of an adequate iodine intake in the population of Cassino despite the low percentage of iodized salt sold by local retailers. This indicates that silent iodine prophylaxis through the consumption of iodine-rich or iodine-enriched food is of importance in the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders.

Selective inhibitors of aurora kinases inhibit proliferation, reduce cell viability and impair cell cycle progression in papillary thyroid carcinoma cells. J BIOL REG HOMEOS AG 2015; 29:793-803. Abstract
The three members of the Aurora kinase family, Aurora-A, -B and -C, regulate several aspects of the mitotic process, and their aberrant expression and/or function causes mitotic abnormalities leading either to cell death or aneuploidy. They are found overexpressed in several human malignancies, including the papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). In the present study, we sought to establish whether Aurora kinase inhibition could be of any therapeutic value in the treatment of aggressive forms of PTC, enduring to radioactive iodide (RAI) ablation. To this end, the effects of selective inhibitors of Aurora-A (MLN8237) and Aurora-B (AZD1152) were analyzed on 3 human PTC cell lines expressing either wild-type (K1 and TPC1) or mutant p53 (BCPAP). The two inhibitors were capable of reducing cell proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent manner, with IC₅₀ comprised between 65.4 and 114.9 nM for MLN8237, and between 26.6 and 484.6 nM for AZD1152. Immunofluorescence experiments confirmed that AZD1152 inhibited Aurora-B phosphorylation of histone H3 on Ser10, however, it did not affect Aurora-A autophosphorylation. MLN8237 inhibited Aurora-A autophosphorylation as expected, but at concentrations required to achieve the maximum antiproliferative effects it also abolished H3 (Ser10) phosphorylation. Time-lapse videomicroscopy evidenced that both inhibitors prevented the completion of cytokinesis, and cytofluorimetric analysis showed accumulation of cells in G2/M phase and/or polyploidy. Apoptosis was induced in all the cells by both inhibitors independently from the p53 status. In conclusion, in the present preclinical study MLN8237 and AZD1152 have emerged as promising drug candidates for RAI-insensitive PTC.

PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER IS CHARACTERIZED BY ALTERED EXPRESSION OF GENES INVOLVED IN THE SUMOYLATION PROCESS. J BIOL REG HOMEOS AG 2015; 29:655-662. Abstract
Small Ubiquitinlike MOdifier (SUMO) proteins are small protein modifiers capable of regulating cellular localization and function of target proteins. Over the last few years, a relevant role has been demonstrated for sumoylation in the modulation of important cellular processes, including gene transcription, DNA repair, cell-cycle regulation and apoptosis. Components of the sumoylation machinery have been found deregulated in different human cancers, and are thought to significantly affect cancer cell progression. In the present study we sought to analyze the expression of all the components of the sumoylation machinery in a case study comprising 77 papillary thyroid cancers (PTC) and normal matched tissues. In particular, we evaluated the expression of the SENP1 to SENP8 (SENtrin-specific proteases), SAE1 (SUMO1 activating enzyme subunit 1), UBA2 (UBiquitin-like modifier activating enzyme 2), UBC9 (UBiquitin conjugating enzyme 9), RanBP2 (RAN binding protein 2), MSMCE2 (Non- SMC element 2), CBX4 (ChromoBoX homolog 4), PIAS1 to PIAS4 (protein inhibitor of activated STAT), ZMIZ1 (zinc finger, MIZ-type containing 1) and ZMIZ2 (Zinc finger, MIZ-type containing 2) by means of quantitative RT-PCR. In most of the PTC examined we observed a significant alteration in the mRNAs of SENP8, ZMIZ1, SAE1, PIAS1 and PIAS2. These tended to be reduced in about 50 to 66% of cases, and unchanged or increased in the remaining ones. Univariate and Kaplan-Mayer analyses documented the lack of association between the expression of the above 5 genes and clinicopathological parameters. Only SAE1 was significantly higher in female PTC tissues, in respect to male PTC tissues (p=0.021), and SENP8 was significantly lower in TNM stages III-V, with respect to stages I-II (p=0.047). In conclusion, we demonstrated that the expression of SENP8, SAE1, PIAS1, PIAS2 and ZMIZ1 is deregulated in the majority of PTC tissues, likely contributing to the PTC phenotype. However, differently from other human cancers, their mRNA level does not represent a prognostic biomarker in PTC patients.

Sympathetic innervation of the suprasesamoidean region of the deep digital flexor tendon in the forelimbs of horses. Vet J 2015; 205:413-6. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to delineate the pattern of sympathetic innervation in the suprasesamoidean region of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) in horses using immunohistochemical staining (IHC) for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and alpha-1 adrenergic receptor (α1-AR). Fourteen forelimbs were collected from 10 horses. Longitudinal sections of the suprasesamoidean region of healthy DDFTs were harvested. Most of the sympathetic innervation was found to be in the walls of blood vessels. The tendon tissue proper was sparsely innervated, with a lesser degree of innervation within the dorsal fibrocartilage. Increased α1-AR immunostaining was also detected in walls of blood vessels and in spindle cells of fibrocartilage. Both α1-AR and TH immunostaining were detected in tenocytes. These findings support the presence of autocrine/paracrine catecholaminergic signalling in equine tendon tissue.

Anatomical variation of the spinous and transverse processes in the caudal cervical vertebrae and the first thoracic vertebra in horses. Equine Vet J 2015; 48:45-9. Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY There are scant data on the incidence of different anatomical variants of the equine caudal cervical spine, despite interest in cervical pathology. OBJECTIVES To identify morphological radiographic variation in the 6th and 7th cervical vertebrae and the first thoracic vertebra in horses of different breeds and to determine whether there are breed- and sex-related differences. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective descriptive study. METHODS Radiographs of the cervical spine of 270 horses were assessed retrospectively. The Chi-square test, or Fisher's exact test when appropriate, was used to test for associations between radiographic findings and sex or breed, and residual analysis was performed to localise differences. Chi-square tests and calculation of phi coefficient (φ) were used to test for associations between different types of radiological variation. RESULTS Three variants were identified in the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and 2 variants were identified in the spinous process of the first thoracic vertebra. The presence of the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra was associated with breed, and transposition of the ventral process of the 6th cervical vertebra onto the ventral aspect of the 7th cervical vertebra was associated with sex. The shape of the spinous process of first thoracic vertebra was associated with the shape of the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra and with the presence of transposition of the ventral process of the 6th cervical vertebra onto the ventral aspect of the 7th. CONCLUSIONS A large number of anatomical variants can be detected radiographically in the caudal cervical area; some of these have a higher frequency, depending on sex and breed. Knowledge of the different shapes is very important in avoiding misdiagnosis of periarticular new bone formation. The spinous process of the first thoracic vertebra has 2 morphological variants.

Reduction in absorption of gallium maltolate in adult horses following oral administration with food: chemistry and pharmacokinetics. J Vet Pharmacol Ther 2014; 36:456-61. Abstract
Gallium (Ga) is under study for the treatment of osteolytic disorders in equines. Previous studies indicate that oral gallium maltolate (GaM) would provide a higher bioavailability than oral Ga salts. However, oral administration to adult horses of 2 mg/kg of GaM, in the form of a solution mixed with food, did not lead to detectable Ga levels in plasma. Therefore, a study was performed to model the chemical behaviour of GaM in the digestive tract. The equilibrium formation constants for Ga(III) and maltol were calculated by means of UV–visible measurements and validated by 1H-NMR measurements at selected pH values. Data indicate that the dissociation of GaM in aqueous solutions is very rapid, while the re-association is slower. Based on these results, poor Ga absorption seems to be due to the equilibrium dissociation of GaM in the stomach and to its slow formation rate in the intestine. The concomitant presence of high concentrations of phytates (strong charged metal chelating agents, which represent about 1% of dry matter in vegetables) might also explain the low absorption of GaM by the gastrointestinal tract. Methods of optimizing Ga absorption after oral administration of GaM require further investigation.

Abstract
Novae are thermonuclear explosions on a white dwarf surface fueled by mass accreted from a companion star. Current physical models posit that shocked expanding gas from the nova shell can produce x-ray emission, but emission at higher energies has not been widely expected. Here, we report the Fermi Large Area Telescope detection of variable gamma-ray emission (0.1 to 10 billion electron volts) from the recently detected optical nova of the symbiotic star V407 Cygni. We propose that the material of the nova shell interacts with the dense ambient medium of the red giant primary and that particles can be accelerated effectively to produce pi(0) decay gamma-rays from proton-proton interactions. Emission involving inverse Compton scattering of the red giant radiation is also considered and is not ruled out.

Abstract
We investigate the transverse fluctuations of the confining string connecting two static quarks in (2+1)D SU(2) Yang-Mills theory using Monte Carlo calculations. The exponentially suppressed signal is extracted from the large noise by a very efficient multilevel algorithm. The resulting width of the string increases logarithmically with the distance between the static quark charges. Corrections at intermediate distances due to universal higher-order terms in the effective string action are calculated analytically. They accurately fit the numerical data.

Spectrum of the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission derived from first-year Fermi Large Area Telescope data. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2010; 104:101101. Abstract
We report on the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) measurements of the so-called "extragalactic" diffuse gamma-ray emission (EGB). This component of the diffuse gamma-ray emission is generally considered to have an isotropic or nearly isotropic distribution on the sky with diverse contributions discussed in the literature. The derivation of the EGB is based on detailed modeling of the bright foreground diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission, the detected LAT sources, and the solar gamma-ray emission. We find the spectrum of the EGB is consistent with a power law with a differential spectral index gamma = 2.41 +/- 0.05 and intensity I(>100 MeV) = (1.03 +/- 0.17) x 10(-5) cm(-2) s(-1) sr(-1), where the error is systematics dominated. Our EGB spectrum is featureless, less intense, and softer than that derived from EGRET data.

Abstract
Dark matter (DM) particle annihilation or decay can produce monochromatic gamma rays readily distinguishable from astrophysical sources. gamma-ray line limits from 30 to 200 GeV obtained from 11 months of Fermi Large Area Space Telescope data from 20-300 GeV are presented using a selection based on requirements for a gamma-ray line analysis, and integrated over most of the sky. We obtain gamma-ray line flux upper limits in the range 0.6-4.5x10{-9} cm{-2} s{-1}, and give corresponding DM annihilation cross-section and decay lifetime limits. Theoretical implications are briefly discussed.

Fermi large area telescope measurements of the diffuse gamma-ray emission at intermediate galactic latitudes. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2009; 103:251101. Abstract
The diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory indicated excess gamma-ray emission greater, > or approximately equal to 1 GeV relative to diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-called "EGRET GeV excess"). The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has measured the diffuse gamma-ray emission with improved sensitivity and resolution compared to EGRET. We report on LAT measurements for energies 100 MeV to 10 GeV and galactic latitudes 10 degrees < or = |b| < or = 20 degrees. The LAT spectrum for this region of the sky is well reproduced by a diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission model that is consistent with local CR spectra and inconsistent with the EGRET GeV excess.

Detection of high-energy gamma-ray emission from the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with Fermi. Science 2009; 325:845-8. Abstract
We report the detection of gamma-ray emissions above 200 megaelectron volts at a significance level of 17sigma from the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, using data obtained with the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Globular clusters are expected to emit gamma rays because of the large populations of millisecond pulsars that they contain. The spectral shape of 47 Tucanae is consistent with gamma-ray emission from a population of millisecond pulsars. The observed gamma-ray luminosity implies an upper limit of 60 millisecond pulsars present in 47 Tucanae.

Abstract
Pulsars are rapidly rotating, highly magnetized neutron stars emitting radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. Although there are more than 1800 known radio pulsars, until recently only seven were observed to pulse in gamma rays, and these were all discovered at other wavelengths. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) makes it possible to pinpoint neutron stars through their gamma-ray pulsations. We report the detection of 16 gamma-ray pulsars in blind frequency searches using the LAT. Most of these pulsars are coincident with previously unidentified gamma-ray sources, and many are associated with supernova remnants. Direct detection of gamma-ray pulsars enables studies of emission mechanisms, population statistics, and the energetics of pulsar wind nebulae and supernova remnants.
