Abstract
Eurasian deer are characterized by the extraordinary diversity of their vocal repertoires. Male sexual calls range from roars with relatively low fundamental frequency (hereafter fo ) in red deer Cervus elaphus, to moans with extremely high fo in sika deer Cervus nippon, and almost infrasonic groans with exceptionally low fo in fallow deer Dama dama. Moreover, while both red and fallow males are capable of lowering their formant frequencies during their calls, sika males appear to lack this ability. Female contact calls are also characterized by relatively less pronounced, yet strong interspecific differences. The aim of this study is to examine the anatomical bases of these inter-specific and inter-sexual differences by identifying if the acoustic variation is reflected in corresponding anatomical variation. To do this, we investigated the vocal anatomy of male and female specimens of each of these three species. Across species and sexes, we find that the observed acoustic variability is indeed related to expected corresponding anatomical differences, based on the source-filter theory of vocal production. At the source level, low fo is associated with larger vocal folds, whereas high fo is associated with smaller vocal folds: sika deer have the smallest vocal folds and male fallow deer the largest. Red and sika deer vocal folds do not appear to be sexually dimorphic, while fallow deer exhibit strong sexual dimorphism (after correcting for body size differences). At the filter level, the variability in formants is related to the configuration of the vocal tract: in fallow and red deer, both sexes have evolved a permanently descended larynx (with a resting position of the larynx much lower in males than in females). Both sexes also have the potential for momentary, call-synchronous vocal tract elongation, again more pronounced in males than in females. In contrast, the resting position of the larynx is high in both sexes of sika deer and the potential for further active vocal tract elongation is virtually absent in both sexes. Anatomical evidence suggests an evolutionary reversal in larynx position within sika deer, that is, a secondary larynx ascent. Together, our observations confirm that the observed diversity of vocal behaviour in polygynous deer is supported by strong anatomical differences, highlighting the importance of anatomical specializations in shaping mammalian vocal repertoires. Sexual selection is discussed as a potential evolutionary driver of the observed vocal diversity and sexual dimorphisms.

Abstract
At LFB USA, Inc., transgenic goats are utilized for the production of recombinant human protein therapeutics in their milk through the rPRO™ Technology platform. This retrospective analysis and report describes the results of induced parturition and its use as a management tool in this large herd of dairy goats. Over a three-year period, 342 does received pronuclear microinjected (MI) embryos transferred into the oviductal lumen via midline laparotomy (day 1). To initiate the induction process, does were given intramuscular injections (IM) of 10 mg each of prostaglandin (Lutalyse®) and dexamethasone to induce parturition on days 144-148 of pregnancy. Mean and Standard Deviation (±SD) time to parturition was 36.7 (±6.5) hours. Does were given these injections at 4pm on Sundays with an expected kidding time of late Monday into Tuesday morning. Of the 342 does, 333 or 97% had kidded by 3pm the following Tuesday, and 313 or 91% kidded in the 18 h between 9pm Monday and 3pm on Tuesday or between 29 and 47 h post induction. By the end of Tuesday, most kids had received colostrum and were transferred to the nursery. The incidences of kid mortality and retained placenta were 2.5% and 1.5%, respectively, clearly achieving a priority at this commercial operation for generating a high percentage of live kids (97.5%) of marked value being produced. The use of induced parturition allowed this large dairy operation to designate two 9-h time blocks in which to concentrate parturition times within the herd. This facilitated strategic scheduling to optimize availability of staff, in order to assist with parturition, separate kids from the dam at birth, and ensure adequate and prompt feeding of colostrum. Predicting the time of kidding in this way can serve as an effective management tool, especially to help reduce kid mortality and prevent disease spread by restricting suckling of colostrum.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate a method of oviducal semen deposition as a strategy for producing offspring from poor-quality cryopreserved goat sperm. Invitro fertilisation (IVF) and AI are common assisted reproductive technologies used in small ruminants, but they have varied results in the goat. The use of poor-quality cryopreserved-thawed sperm (<50% live/dead ratio at post-thaw) can decrease the rate of success. These procedures were performed in the month of November in Central Massachusetts in the United States (42° N). Seven 10-year-old dairy goats (Saanen, Toggenburg, and Alpine breeds) were synchronised and superovulated using a progesterone implant on Day 0, a prostaglandin injection at Day 7, two daily injections of 36mg of FSH ~12h apart on Days 12-15, and progesterone implant removal on Day 14 followed by an injection of 50µg of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone. Sperm deposition was performed on Day 17 (72 h after implant removal). The animals were anaesthetised using a standardised protocol, intubated, and maintained using isoflurane, and sterile prep was performed before a midline laparotomy procedure. Straws from a single ejaculate from a transgenic founder that was cryopreserved using a commercial two-step glycerol-egg yolk-based extender were used. A straw from this collection was post-thawed 30 days after collection and, using a commercial live/dead stain, 67% live sperm was determined. The optimal type of sperm prep and sperm concentration is unknown and may be dependent on sperm quality. Therefore, different gradient preps using Vitrolife SpermGrad at three volumes (1.5 (used on two animals), 1.0, and 0.5mL) as well as two volumes of IVF Bioscience Bovine BO-SemenPrep (4.0mL (used on two animals) and 2.0mL) were used. All five pellets were diluted in 1.0mL of IVF Bioscience Bovine BO-IVF media. Sperm concentrations ranging from 75×106 to 27×106 spermmL−1 were deposited into one oviduct; then, a 10:1 dilution was performed and 7.5×106 to 2.7×10 spermmL−1 were deposited into the contralateral oviduct. The depositions were performed just proximal to the uterotubal junction in a volume of 0.1mL of diluent via a tuberculin syringe attached to a 20-gauge needle. Two days following the procedure, oviducts were flushed postmortem from three of the seven randomly selected goats. All three had fertilised embryos, and nineteen 8-cell embryos were retrieved. Three of these embryos were surgically transferred to the distal uterine horn of a suitable recipient. The recipient became pregnant and produced a single offspring. The remaining four of seven goats were killed 41 days post-surgery. Two of the four goats were pregnant, with one carrying one fetus and the other carrying five fetuses. Further studies are needed to optimise this method, but these initial results indicate that oviducal semen deposition directly into the oviduct proximal to the uterotubal junction may be a suitable alternative for producing offspring from suboptimal cryopreserved-thawed goat sperm.

Abstract
Multiple methods of grafting graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to natural clinoptilolite-rich zeolite particles were developed in our laboratory. In this study, we have systematically characterized the GO coated particles prepared by various methods to select the most promising method for further research efforts. This study revealed that the most promising coating method was the clean-acid-treated zeolite particles followed by deposition of GO nanosheets onto the zeolite surface and mild thermal treatment of the particles. GO and its synergistic interaction in zeolite was attributed to electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. Hydrophobic interactions are enhanced both due to dealumination of zeolite caused by the cleaning method followed by acid treatment and due to partial thermal deoxygenation of GO. This method provided a ten times larger surface area (from 10.55 m2 g−1 to 117.96 m2 g−1) and three times smaller pore diameter (from 81.91 Å to 30.68 Å), providing great particles for a variety of applications as adsorbents or catalysts. Abstract
General Game Playing is a field which allows the researcher to investigate techniques that might eventually be used in an agent capable of Artificial General Intelligence. Game playing presents a controlled environment in which to evaluate AI techniques, and so we have seen an increase in interest in this field of research. Games of imperfect information offer the researcher an additional challenge in terms of complexity over games with perfect information. In this article, we look at imperfect-information games: their expression, their complexity, and the additional demands of their players. We consider the problems of working with imperfect information and introduce a technique called HyperPlay, for efficiently sampling very large information sets, and present a formalism together with pseudo code so that others may implement it. We examine the design choices for the technique, show its soundness and completeness then provide some experimental results and demonstrate the use of the technique in a variety of imperfect-information games, revealing its strengths, weaknesses, and its efficiency against randomly generating samples. Improving the technique, we present HyperPlay-II, capable of correctly valuing information-gathering moves. Again, we provide some experimental results and demonstrate the use of the new technique revealing its strengths, weaknesses and its limitations.

Abstract
The biomechanics of the rotational shot put is used to direct coaching to enhance throwing performance. Maximising shot put distance and velocity at the point of release through increasing momentum is of interest to coaches. This narrative review aimed to examine and summarise the critical kinematic variables within each of the six phases of rotational shot put associated with performance and release velocity. Databases were searched using 'shot put', 'biomechanics' and 'track and field throwing', from which 20 articles based on the inclusion criteria were reviewed. The results indicate that the magnitude of transverse thrower-shot angular momentum and thrower-shots path of translation are crucial to performance. In achieving high angular momentum, sweep leg and arm actions need to be well-timed, and their timings and movement likely determine key biomechanical events such as hip to shoulder separations. Generating high release velocities stems from the development and transference of momentum through each phase. Kinematics and kinetics within each phase are co-dependent within and across each phase; therefore, coaches should consider the biomechanics of an athlete through preceding phases when seeking biomechanical change within a given phase. Further research and consideration of kinetics and energy transfer would add value to kinematic observations.

Abstract
The cable-pulley downswing is a movement similar to the golf downswing, and therefore may offer a valuable golf specific rotational diagnostic and training tool. However, to be of value, measurements need to be stable across testing occasions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the test-retest reliability of the cable downswing across a spectrum of load-velocities. Ten male participants (21.7 ± 3.0 years, 84.6 ± 9.8 kg, 1.80 ± 0.05 m) volunteered to participate over 3 testing sessions' separated by a minimum of 3 days. Participants performed maximal velocity cable downswings across eight loads (1.25-18.75 kg), which were incrementally increased by 2.5 kg. Vertical cable stack velocity was collected at 50 Hz via a GymAware linear position transducer. Downswing velocity across all eight loads was observed to be extremely reliable (change in mean = -5.1% to 2.9%, coefficient of variation = 1.5-6.4% and intra-class correlation = 0.70-0.98), with reliability increasing with increasing trials. In conclusion, the cable downswing is a reliable method of tracking rotational ability similar to the golf downswing. Practitioners should establish an upper load relative to the apparatus and participant. Future research should determine the utility and sensitivity of this measure.

Abstract
Superovulation of donor animals is essential in the production of transgenic founder goats generated through microinjection. There can be a marked variable response to the exogenous hormones used for superovulation. The objective of this study was to examine how the superovulatory response of individual goats affected the ability of the fertilized, microinjected embryos to develop into offspring. The donors were superovulated using a progesterone implant on Day 0, a prostaglandin injection at Day 7, 2 injections ~12h apart of 32 to 36mg of FSH on Day 12 to 15, progesterone implant removal on Day 14, bred by intact bucks several times starting on Day 15 to 16, an injection of 50μg of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and surgical collection of 1- to 2-cell embryos from retrograde flushing of the oviduct on Day 17 (~24-48 h, 1-2 days after breeding). Surgical collection allows for an accurate ovulation point (OP) count before the oviduct being retrograde flushed and ova collected and counted. Data from donor animals were grouped by superovulatory response based on OP counts of 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, or >30. The number of donors that contributed per group were 130, 280, 175, and 52, respectively. The recovery rate was 76, 72, 68, and 62%, respectively. After collection, ova were viewed under a dissecting microscope and assessed for fertilization by identifying pronuclei, and 1 pronucleus was microinjected. The fertilization rate was 47, 52, 51, and 56%, respectively. The survivability rate after microinjection was 80, 76, 75, and 76%, respectively. Surviving embryos were transferred (3-5) into recipient goats following a 2- to 6-h in vitro culture (as 1- to 2-cell embryos), allowing for a suitable period to assess viability post-injection. Further in vitro development rates were not assessed because of the short timeframe the embryos stayed in culture. The conception rates were 71, 56, 65, and 53%, respectively, and abortion rates were 23, 10, 14, and 9%, respectively. As some recipients received embryos from multiple donors, this data could not be included in the analysis as identifying which offspring were from the corresponding embryo group could not be confirmed. Data were analysed using SAS software (version 9.4, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). The Wald chi square test under linear regression was used to analyse the number of offspring produced per embryo transferred. No significant differences were found between groups (all P-values were>0.05). This analysis indicated that the range of superovulation response does not affect the developmental competence of the pronuclear microinjected embryo or the ability to produce viable offspring.

Abstract
The production of transgenic founder dairy goats (cross-bred Saanens, Alpines, Toggenburgs, and Nubians) involves the collection, microinjection, and transfer of numerous embryos into suitable recipient goats to ultimately produce a transgenic founder(s). The objective of this study was to determine the most efficient number of microinjection embryos to transfer to suitable recipients for transgenic founder generation. This is critically important in a commercial production program, as it impacts the goal for the number of embryos collected from donors, number of recipients utilised, and, hence, the overall number of surgical procedures being performed. The entire embryo collection, transfer, and founder-generation process is continuously being evaluated for ways to become more efficient in producing transgenic animals. During LFB USA’s commercial founder-production campaigns over the years (1997-2017), pronuclear microinjection was performed and 3, 4, or 5 embryos were transferred to female goat recipients. The recipients were synchronized using a progesterone implant on Day 0, a prostaglandin injection at Day 7, an injection of 300-500IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin on Day 13, progesterone implant removal on Day 14, and surgical transfer of pronuclear microinjected 1- or 2-cell embryos into the oviduct on Day 17. The individual totals and calculation for offspring per embryos transferred was compared for 3, 4, and 5 embryos transferred per recipient and was determined to be (1659/8637) 0.19, (912/4548) 0.20, and (112/675) 0.17, respectively. These embryo efficacy ratios were not significantly different (P>0.05) using the Wald Chi-squared test under logistic regression, and suggests that the number of offspring born is not impacted by number of embryos transferred. Seasonality was also evaluated in this production environment located in North America, with in-season being considered September to December and out-of-season being January to July. Nulliparous recipients during in-season (September to December) embryo transfer operations produced a significant difference, with totals and calculation for (offspring per embryo transferred) of (470/2346) 0.20, (260/1088) 0.24, and (23/190) 0.12 for 3, 4, and 5 embryo transfers, respectively (Table 1). This data indicates that when using nulliparous recipients during the in-season, transferring 4 embryos is optimal for offspring produced.

Abstract
A population of glial cells in the central nervous system of the gastropod mollusk Lymnaea stagnalis produces a soluble protein that specifically binds acetylcholine. This protein is named the acetylcholine binding protein (AChBP). Experiments performed in vitro indicated that AChBP inactivates released acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses. On the basis of these observations, a similar in vivo role for AChBP was hypothesized. To fulfill this function, AChBP-expressing glia ought to be located in close proximity to cholinergic synapses in vivo. To examine this, we have analyzed the cellular and subcellular expression of AChBP in the intact CNS. Using a variety of molecular techniques, we demonstrate here that AChBP expression is confined to a subpopulation of glial cells located within the peripheral zone of each of the ganglia constituting the CNS. This zone contains the cell bodies of neurons, but few synapses. Conversely, glial cells that do not express the AChBP are predominantly located in the synapse-rich central neuropile zone but are rare in the cell body zone. Thus, our findings are not compatible with the previous conclusions drawn from in vitro studies and suggest that AChBP functions in vivo as a regulator of nonsynaptic cholinergic transmission.

Abstract
In a number of neuronal models of learning signalling by endogenous nitric oxide (NO), produced by the enzyme NO synthase (NOS), is essential for the formation of long-term memory (LTM). For example, in the molluscan model system Lymnaea, NO is required for LTM formation in the first few hours after one-trial reward conditioning. Furthermore, conditioning leads to transient up-regulation of the NOS gene in identified modulatory neurons, the cerebral giant cells (CGCs), which are known to be involved in LTM formation. In Lymnaea nothing is known however about the structure and localization of the major receptor for NO, the soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC). Here we report on the cloning and characterization of both alpha and beta subunits of NO-sensitive sGC and show that they are coexpressed in the CGCs. Furthermore, our electrophysiological experiments on isolated CGCs show that these neurons respond to NO by generating a prolonged depolarization of the membrane potential. Moreover, we demonstrate that this depolarization is blocked by ODQ, supporting our hypothesis that it is mediated by sGC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper reports the impact of oral health on the quality of life (QOL) of Southern European, dentate older adults, living independently in Melbourne, Australia. Participants were recruited through ethnic social clubs and interviewed about oral health, general health, socio-demographics, and QOL using the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 12 (SF-12). The SF-12's physical and mental health component summary scores (PCS and MCS, respectively) were computed. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) assessed the specific impact of oral health on QOL. Participants were also given a clinical oral examination. RESULTS A total of 603 eligible older adults volunteered; 308 were from Greek background and 295 were from Italian background. Mean age was 67.7 years (SD 6.2), with 63.7% being female. The PCS score had a mean value of 45.8 (SD 11.8), and MCS had a mean of 47.8 (SD 5.7). PCS was associated with, periodontal status, chronic health condition, self-perceived oral health needs, self-assessed oral health status, oral health impact score and the interaction between gender and level of education [F(11 552) = 10.57; P < 0.0001]. These independent variables accounted for 16% of the variance in PCS. The multivariate model predicting MCS had only one significant variable (self-reported gingival bleeding), explaining 1.5% of the variance. The OHIP-14 ranged from 0 to 48 with a mean score of 5.6 (SD 9.3). The model predicting OHIP-14 contained four significant variables: perceived oral health treatment needs, number of missing natural teeth, reports of having to sip liquid to help swallow food, and gender [F(4576) = 33.39; P < 0.0001], and explained 18% of the variance. The results demonstrated a negative association between oral health indicators and both the oral health-related QOL and the physical component of the SF-12. CONCLUSION The present findings support a growing recognition of the importance of oral health as a mediator of QOL. However, the self-selected sample and modest predictive power of the multivariate models suggest that further research is needed to expand this explanatory model.

Abstract
This article reviews the dynamics of the oncology market and treatment trends and provides strategic guidance to those concerned with new product discovery and development. Cancer is the therapeutic area of highest potential, with an annual market value expected to be in excess of US 40 billion dollars in 2020. The global incidence of cancer cases is forecast to more than double over the next 20 years. Investments in research and development will keep pace with the growing demand for effective treatments, aiming to fulfil the many and often discrete unmet medical needs. Recent breakthroughs promise more successful outcomes, particularly with the advent of more selective chemotherapy and novel therapeutic approaches. Among the latter, a number of angiogenesis inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) should show encouraging levels of efficacy by 2004. Oncology is a complex and high-risk therapeutic area that offers high rewards. It is appropriate for only the stronger or more focused serious players within the pharmaceutical industry. The winners will be the companies with a long-term strategic intent, a credible portfolio and engagement in appropriate alliances, particularly in discovery. The future presents ethical, clinical and commercial challenges, given the wide disparity of therapeutic outcomes among cancer patients around the world. The real success will thus be to treat cancer in innovative ways that benefit everyone and are, in volume and across the life cycle, commercially attractive to the treatment provider.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This paper describes one outcome of a randomized controlled trial of community action for cancer prevention, Cancer Action in Rural Towns. The aims are to [1] explore the effectiveness of community action in decreasing adolescent smoking in rural Australian towns; and [2] describe the relationship between adolescent smoking rates and demographic variables. METHODS In 1992, 20 rural Australian towns were selected. Community action involved formation of community committees and utilization of access-point networks to initiate and maintain intervention strategies. Cross-sectional surveys of smoking behaviors for all Year 9 and Year 10 students (13-16 years) in each town were conducted pre- and posttest. The main outcome measure was self-reported smoking in the past 4 weeks. SUDAAN software was used to look at differences between treatment. RESULTS The results showed strong secular trends toward increased adolescent smoking, regardless of treatment group, particularly for females. There was no significant intervention effect. CONCLUSIONS Increasing adolescent smoking rates found in this and other studies highlight that the definitive strategy to stem the adolescent smoking epidemic has not been found. Hope may remain for recent legislative strategies, but rigorous evaluation is essential, and compliance with legislation should be carefully monitored.

Abstract
This study was to identify hysterectomy prevalence across urban, rural and remote areas of Australia and across states, to separate geographic variation from the effect of sociodemographic influences, and also to compare the quality of life of women who have and have not had hysterectomy. Data were collected from 14,072 women aged 45-50 years participating in the baseline survey of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. The estimated prevalence of hysterectomy was 22%. Factors significantly associated with hysterectomy included living in a rural or remote area, state of residence, having private health insurance, lower levels of education, being married and having more than two children, having had other gynaecological and non-gynaecological surgical procedures, and more visits to general practitioners. Compared with women who had not had hysterectomy, women who had had hysterectomy had significantly poorer physical and mental health as measured by the SF-36 quality of life profile (adjusted mean PCS=45.7 vs 49.3, p<0.0001; adjusted mean MCS=46.9 vs 48.2, p<0.0001).

Abstract
The Women's Health Australia (WHA) project is a longitudinal study of several cohorts of Australian women, which aims to examine the relationships between biological, psychological, social and lifestyle factors and women's physical health, emotional well-being, and their use of and satisfaction with health care. Using the Medicare database as a sampling frame (with oversampling of women from rural and remote areas), 106,000 women in the three age groups 18-23, 45-50 and 70-75 were sent an invitation to participate and a 24-page self-complete questionnaire. Reminder letters, a nation-wide publicity campaign, information brochures, a freecall number for inquiries, and the option of completing the questionnaire by telephone in English or in the respondent's own language, were used to encourage participation. Statutory regulations precluded telephone follow-up of non-respondents. Response rates were 41% (N = 14,792), 54% (N = 14,200) and 36% (N = 12,614) for the three age groups. Comparison with Australian census data indicated that the samples are reasonably representative of Australian women in these age groups, except for a somewhat higher representation of women who are married or in a defacto relationship, and of women with post-school education. The most common reason for non-participation was lack of interest or time. Personal circumstances, objections to the questionnaire or specific items in it, and concerns about confidentiality were the other main reasons. Recruitment of three representative age-group cohorts of women, and the maintenance of these cohorts over a number of years, will provide a valuable opportunity to examine associations over time between aspects of women's lives and their physical and emotional health and well-being.

Abstract
The important omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is present at high concentration in some membranes that also contain the unusual sterol cholesterol sulfate (CS). The association between these lipids and their effect on membrane structure is presented here. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), MC540 fluorescence, erythritol permeability, pressure/area isotherms on lipid monolayers and molecular modeling are used to compare the effect of CS and cholesterol on model phospholipid membranes. By DSC, CS decreases the main phase transition temperature and broadens the transitions of dipalmitolyphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (18:0,18:1 PC) and 1-stearoyl-2-docosahexaenoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (18:0,22:6 PC) to a much larger extent than does cholesterol. In addition CS produces a three-component transition in 18:0,18:1 PC bilayers that is not seen with cholesterol. In a mixed phospholipid bilayer composed of 18:0,18:1 PC/18:0,22:6 PC (1:1, mol/mol), CS at 2.5 membrane mol% or more induces lateral phase separation while cholesterol does not. CS decreases lipid packing density and increases permeability of 18:0,18:1 PC and 18:0,22:6 PC bilayers to a much larger extent than cholesterol. CS disrupts oleic acid-containing bilayers more than those containing DHA. Molecular modeling confirms that the anionic sulfate moiety on CS renders this sterol more polar than cholesterol with the consequence that CS likely resides higher (extends further into the aqueous environment) in the bilayer. CS can therefore be preferentially accommodated into DHA-enriched bilayers where its tetracyclic ring system may fit into the delta 4 pocket of DHA, a location excluded to cholesterol. It is proposed that CS may in part replace the membrane function of cholesterol in DHA-rich membranes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to explore the effectiveness of community action as a strategy for health promotion, through a critical review of five years of community action evaluation literature. METHODS Community action was defined as a health promotion, program that involved the community in implementation and control of the process of the program. Criteria for scientific evaluation of programs were proposed for sampling and control procedures, reliability and validity of instruments, analysis techniques, and specification of details of the intervention. A critical review of the literature, located by an on-line and related reference search, was undertaken for community action aimed at reducing cancer and cardiovascular disease, between January 1990 and May 1995. RESULTS None of seven community action studies (17 articles) that examined cancer risk factors fulfilled all the criteria for rigorous scientific evaluation. The most methodologically adequate cancer study, the COMMIT intervention, had only a moderate degree of success in reducing community smoking rates. Similarly, none of the six studies (25 articles) on cardiovascular disease fulfilled all the criteria. The results for the most methodologically adequate study, the Minnesota Heart Health Program, were disappointing, with strong secular trends preventing adequate assessment of the intervention effect. CONCLUSIONS The finding that none of the reviewed studies met all evaluation criteria was due to several factors, including political considerations, feasibility, and the continued evolution of the science of evaluation in health promotion. Some important questions are posed for researchers by the failure of methodologically superior projects, such as COMMIT, to show major gains in reducing health risk behaviors.

Abstract
Use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is increasing, yet little is known of women's perceptions of HRT. A telephone survey examined relevant knowledge and attitudes, and psychological well-being, in 258 women aged 51 to 60 (111 HRT users, 47 previous users, and 100 never-users). Although HRT users were better informed than nonusers, knowledge was generally low. Half the HRT users could not name any hormone used in HRT, and one third could not give any reason for using HRT. Current users, however, had more positive attitudes to HRT. Groups defined by HRT usage did not differ on well-being or current symptomatology, although current and previous HRT users reported having previously experienced a higher level of symptomatology than never-users, suggesting that HRT may have provided symptom relief for those women who chose to use it. In contrast to previous research, women with a history of hysterectomy did not show more emotional distress than others. Results suggest that Australian women frequently make choices concerning HRT without adequate knowledge, and that HRT may reduce symptoms but may have little impact on psychological well-being. Optimal usage of HRT by middle-aged women will rely on a clearer understanding, both of its effects and of women's attitudes toward its use.

Each animal was surgically anaesthetised and the left femoral blood vessels cannulated for blood withdrawal and solute infusion. Each rat received 75-selenium as sodium selenite infused in normal saline and experiments lasted between 5 minutes and 5 hours during which blood samples were periodically taken. At termination, the CNS was removed, regionally dissected and analysed with the plasma samples for 75-Se radioactivity by gamma-counting. Data were analysed by graphical analysis. Results showed unidirectional uptake of 75-Se into the CNS and regional differences were not found except for the hypothalamus. On average the CNS influx rate constant (Kin) was about 7 +/- 1 x 10(-5) ml/min/g. Data suggest that the 75-Se most likely entered the CNS as a free ionic form.

Abstract
Twenty-six patients with leg ulcers with a mean age of 80 years were assessed at a day hospital to determine the aetiology and to carry out a trial of four-layer compression bandaging for those suitable. Ten had ankle brachial pressure indices (ABIs) < 0.8. Of nine patients with venous disease who received compression bandaging, only two ulcers healed and have remained healed with fitted below-knee elastic stockings. The remaining patients were unable to tolerate compression or developed deterioration of their ulcers. Nine patients had unhealing arterial ulcers all unsuitable for reconstructive surgery. Five patients presented with pressure sores due to bandages, shoes or heel pressure in bed. All healed slowly with leg elevation and pressure relief. Four patients had extensive non-venous, non-arterial ulceration associated with fluid retention and dependent oedema exacerbated by spending their nights in chairs. Varicose eczema was healed in 12 patients. All the patients had multiple pathology and poorly controlled pain. Although complete healing was achieved in only six patients, the importance of ABI measurement and the gross mixed pathology suggests that every elderly patient with a leg ulcer needs medical assessment and management and that this could form a valuable service of a geriatric day hospital.

Abstract
The influence of N-acetyl-S-(1,2,3,4,4-pentachloro-1,3-butadienyl)-L-cysteine (NAc-PCBD) on cysteine conjugate beta-lyase in female rat kidney has been examined. After a single, non-nephrotoxic dose of NAc-PCBD (3 mg/kg), cytosolic beta-lyase enzyme activity was increased 1.5 to 3-fold commensurate with a corresponding increase in enzyme protein levels as assessed by both Western blot and ELISA analyses. Using a cDNA probe for beta-lyase, this induction was found to be accompanied by an increase in the cognate mRNA. In contrast, a higher, nephrotoxic dose of NAc-PCBD (10 mg/kg) decreased all the above parameters. These effects appeared to be specific to the cytosolic form of the enzyme as no changes in kidney mitochondrial beta-lyase or enzyme protein levels were observed. Repeated dosing with the lower dose level (3 mg/kg) resulted in either no change, or in some instances, a reduction in the above parameters, suggesting an accumulation of the xenobiotic and a masking of the induction phenomenon. The molecular mechanisms underlying these observations are discussed in terms of the nephrotoxicity of halogenated xenobiotics.

Abstract
The regional distribution of ethanol in selected areas of the rat brain was studied after single intravenous and intraperitoneal injections. Ethanol concentrations (measured by gas-liquid chromatography) in cortex, striatum, and hippocampus were compared with arterial and venous blood alcohol concentrations. As previously reported, equilibrium between tissue and arterial blood occurred within 3 min and followed simple diffusion kinetics. At shorter time intervals (1 min) after injection, regional ethanol concentrations differed, possibly because of regional blood flow and tissue mass. Equilibrium between tissue and venous blood required 10--15 min and coincided with the disappearance of the arterial-venous difference. These findings suggest that tissue ethanol concentrations cannot be determined from venous blood samples until brain arteriovenous equilibrium has occurred. They also support the argument that alcohol concentrations in tissue perfusates do not necessarily provide a reliable guide to those in the tissue.
