Abstract
To address the issue of the lack of red light in traditional Ce3+: YAG-encapsulated blue LED white light systems, we utilized spark plasma sintering (SPS) to prepare spinel-based Cr3+-doped red phosphor ceramics. Through phase and spectral analysis, the SPS-sintered ZnAl2O4: 0.5%Cr3+ phosphor ceramic exhibits good density, and Cr3+ is incorporated into [AlO6] octahedra as a red emitting center. We analyzed the reasons behind the narrow-band emission and millisecond-level lifetime of ZAO: 0.5%Cr3+, attributing it to the four-quadrupole interaction mechanism as determined through concentration quenching modeling. Additionally, we evaluated the thermal conductivity and thermal quenching performance of the ceramic. The weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) effects and emission from antisite defects at 699 nm provide positive assistance in thermal quenching. At a high temperature of 150 °C, the thermal conductivity reaches up to 14 W·m-1·K-1, and the 687 nm PL intensity is maintained at around 70% of room temperature. Furthermore, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of ZAO: 0.5%Cr3+ phosphor ceramic can reach 78%. When encapsulated with Ce3+: YAG for a 450 nm blue LED, it compensates for the lack of red light, adjusts the color temperature, and improves the color rendering index (R9). This provides valuable insights for the study of white light emitting diodes (WLEDs).

Abstract
Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering. On this basis, a bi-layer composite phosphor was prepared by low-temperature sintering to cover the phosphor ceramics with a layer of SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-phosphor-in-glass (PiG). The optical, thermal, and colorimetric properties of LuAG:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics, SrAlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors and SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-PiG were studied individually. Combining the bi-layer composite phosphors with the blue LED chip, it is found that the spectrum can be adjusted by varying the doping concentration of SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-PiG and the thickness of Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics. The maximal color rendering index value of the white LED is 86, and the R9 is 61. Under the excitation of a laser diode, the maximum phosphor conversion efficacy of the bi-layer composite phosphors is 120 lm/W, the Ra is 83, and the correlated color temperature is 4534 K. These results show that the bi-layer composite phosphor ceramic is a candidate material to achieve high color rendering index for high brightness lighting.

Abstract
Radiosensitizer plays an important role in the cancer radiotherapy for efficient killing of hypoxic cancer cells at a low radiation dose. However, the commercially available small molecular radiosensitizers show low efficiency due to poor bioavailability in tumor tissues. In this report, we develop a novel amphiphilic block copolymer radiosensitizer, metronidazole-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(γ-propargyl-l-glutamate) (PEG-b-P(PLG-g-MN)), which can be self-assembled into core-shell micelles (MN-Micelle) with an optimal size of ∼60 nm in aqueous solution. In vitro cytotoxicity evaluation indicated that MN-Micelle sensitized the hypoxic cancer cells more efficiently under radiation with the sensitization enhancement ratio (SER) of 1.62 as compared with that of commercially available sodium glycididazole (GS; SER = 1.17) at the metronidazole-equivalent concentration of 180 μg/mL. Upon intravenous injection of MN-Micelle into the tumor-bearing mice, high tumor deposition was achieved, which finally suppressed tumor growth completely after electron beam radiation at a low radiation dose of 4 Gy. MN-Micelle with outstanding performance as an in vivo radiosensitizer holds great potentials for translation into radiotherapy application.

Abstract
AIM To compare postoperative plain radiographs with computed tomography (CT) post-processing images in evaluating the quality of anatomical reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 168 patients who sustained closed ankle fracture and were treated with open reduction and internal fixation in East Hospital were reviewed. Postoperative plain radiographs and CT post-processing images were evaluated. The observation was performed under volume-rendering mode and multiplanar reconstruction mode. The assessment was performed by two independent orthopaedic surgeons. The inter- and intra-observer variations were analysed by kappa statistics. The differences between plain radiographs and CT post-processing images were compared using χ(2) test (McNemar's test). RESULTS Inter- and intra-observer agreement was almost perfect (0.813-1.000) using CT post-processing images, which was higher than that using plain radiographs (0.323-0.848). More non-anatomical reduction could be recognised in the supination-external rotation (SER), supination-adduction (SAD), pronation-external rotation (PER), and overall groups (p<0.05) and more poor internal fixation could be recognised in the SER, SAD, and overall groups (p<0.05) using CT post-processing images than using radiographs. CONCLUSION More residual articular step, fracture fragment displacement, and poor internal fixation could be detected by CT post-processing images than plain radiographs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cartilage repair still presents a challenge to clinicians and researchers alike. A more effective, simpler procedure that can produce hyaline-like cartilage is needed for articular cartilage repair. HYPOTHESIS A technique combining microfracture with a biomaterial scaffold of perforated decalcified cortical-cancellous bone matrix (DCCBM; composed of cortical and cancellous parts) would create a 1-step procedure for hyaline-like cartilage repair. STUDY DESIGN Controlled laboratory study. METHODS For the in vitro portion of this study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from bone marrow aspirates of New Zealand White rabbits. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal microscopy, and 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue assay were used to assess the attachment, proliferation, and cartilage matrix production of MSCs grown on a DCCBM scaffold. For the in vivo experiment, full-thickness defects were produced in the articular cartilage of the trochlear groove of 45 New Zealand White rabbits, and the rabbits were then assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: perforated DCCBM combined with microfracture (DCCBM+M group), perforated DCCBM alone (DCCBM group), and microfracture alone (M group). Five rabbits in each group were sacrificed at 6, 12, or 24 weeks after the operation, and the repair tissues were analyzed by histological examination, assessment of matrix staining, SEM, and nanoindentation of biomechanical properties. RESULTS The DCCBM+M group showed hyaline-like articular cartilage repair, and the repair tissues appeared to have better matrix staining and revealed biomechanical properties close to those of the normal cartilage. Compared with the DCCBM+M group, there was unsatisfactory repair tissues with less matrix staining in the DCCBM group and no matrix staining in the M group, as well as poor integration with normal cartilage and poor biomechanical properties. CONCLUSION The DCCBM scaffold is suitable for MSC growth and hyaline-like cartilage repair induction when combined with microfracture. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Microfracture combined with a DCCBM scaffold is a promising method that can be performed and adopted into clinical treatment for articular cartilage injuries.

Abstract
PURPOSE We determined whether anti-transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) intervention could halt the progression of established radiation-induced liver fibrosis (RILF). METHODS AND MATERIALS A replication-defective adenoviral vector expressing the extracellular portion of human TβRII and the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G fusion protein (AdTβRIIFc) was produced. The entire rat liver was exposed to 30 Gy irradiation to generate a RILF model (RILFM). Then, RILFM animals were treated with AdTβRIIFc (1 × 10(11) plaque-forming units [PFU] of TβRII), control virus (1 × 10(11) PFU of AdGFP), or saline. Delayed radiation liver injury was assessed by histology and immunohistochemistry. Chronic oxidative stress damage, hepatic stellate cell activation, and hepatocyte regeneration were also analyzed. RESULTS In rats infected with AdTβRIIFc, fibrosis was significantly improved compared with rats treated with AdGFP or saline, as assessed by histology, hydroxyproline content, and serum level of hyaluronic acid. Compared with AdGFP rats, AdTβRIIFc-treated rats exhibited decreased oxidative stress damage and hepatic stellate cell activation and preserved liver function. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that TGF-β plays a critical role in the progression of liver fibrosis and suggest that anti-TGF-β intervention is feasible and ameliorates established liver fibrosis. In addition, chronic oxidative stress may be involved in the progression of RILF.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether caffeine enhanced radiosensitivity of normal liver tissue in a rat radiation-induced liver disease model. Buffalo rat McA-RH7777 hepatocellular cancer cells and BRL3A normal liver cells were irradiated, and cell cycle distribution and apoptosis rates were analyzed. A rat model of radiation-induced liver disease was established, rats were randomized into four groups: control; caffeine alone; irradiation (IR) alone; and caffeine plus IR (Caff + IR) group. Apoptosis rates in normal rat liver tissue after IR were evaluated by TUNEL staining and caspase-3 Western blot. Transaminase activity was measured and histopathological examination was done after IR. Caffeine abrogated IR-induced G2 phase arrest (Caff + IR vs. IR: 40.9 ± 4.0 vs. 60.7 ± 5.5%, at 12 h after IR) and increased apoptosis rates (Caff + IR vs. IR: 56.1 ± 6.8 vs. 35.5 ± 4.0%, at 72 h after IR) in McA-RH7777 cells, but did not affect IR-induced G2 phase arrest and apoptosis rates at any time point after IR in BRL3A cells. Caffeine did not enhance apoptosis, transaminase activity, or histopathological injury of normal rat liver tissue at any time points after IR. This study suggests that caffeine might not enhance radiosensitivity of normal liver tissue in vivo. In an earlier study, we reported that caffeine enhanced radiosensitivity of human hepatocellular cancer in a nude mice model. Together, these results offer feasibility of clinical application.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine whether caffeine enhanced radiosensitization in an orthotopic transplant of LM3 human hepatocellular cancer in nude mice. LM3 hepatocellular carcinoma cells were infected with red fluorescent protein and irradiated, and cell cycle distribution and survival fraction were detected. A nude mouse model of orthotopic transplant of red fluorescent protein-expressing LM3 hepatocellular cancer was established. Nude mice were divided into four groups: control (NS); caffeine (Caff) alone; irradiation (IR) alone; and caffeine + IR (Caff + IR). Tumor growth curves were described. Expression of cyclin and apoptosis were evaluated by analysis of phosphorylated cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDC2) Tyr15 (CDC2-Tyr15-P), cyclinB1, TUNEL staining, and caspase-3. Caffeine abrogated IR-induced G(2) phase arrest and decreased survival of irradiated LM3 cells. Caffeine enhanced radiosensitivity of LM3 hepatocellular cancer in vivo. Tumor growth delay time in the Caff + IR group was 14.3 days compared with the NS group, 14.1 days compared with the Caff alone group, and 7.2 days compared with the IR alone group. At 15 Gy, expression of CDC2-Tyr15-P in the Caff + IR group (26.0 +/- 8.9%) was significantly lower than in the IR alone group (68.4 +/- 10.6%), expression of cyclinB1 and proportion of TUNEL-positive cells in the Caff + IR group (30.4 +/- 8.7% and 59.2 +/- 9.5%, respectively) was significantly higher than in the IR alone group (7.0 +/- 3.7% and 24.2 +/- 7.2%, respectively), expression of caspase-3 was consistent with the TUNEL staining results. This study suggested that caffeine might enhance the radiosensitivity of LM3 hepatocellular cancer in vivo, and may be feasible for further clinical applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the regenerative capacity and proliferation related to cell cycle modulators in irradiated livers after partial hepatectomy (PH) in rats. METHODS AND MATERIALS Two experimental groups were given a single dose of either 4-Gy or 8-Gy photon radiation to the whole liver following PH. The control group underwent only PH, without irradiation. The liver specimens were analysed for apoptosis, proliferation and cell cycle related genes between 0.5 and 12 days. RESULTS Mean change in weight of the remnant liver in the 8-Gy group was significantly lower than in the control and 4-Gy groups. The apex of proliferating cell nuclear antigen labelling and bromodeoxyuridine incorporation index in two irradiated groups were also apparently lower than that in control group. After PH, transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFbeta1), and the type II receptor of TGFbeta (TGFbetaR-II), anti-tumour protein 53(p53) and anti-tumour protein21(p21) protein expression in the irradiated livers was higher than in unirradiated ones. Significant apoptosis was noted in 8-Gy group. However, the maximal value of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) mRNA and protein expression in the irradiated group was suppressed and restoration of liver function was delayed. CONCLUSION Whole liver lower dose irradiation can attenuate regenerative capacity following partial hepatectomy in rats.

Abstract
The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, which is up-regulated in response to sensitizing treatments with serotonin (5-HT), plays a critical role in inducing long-term facilitation (LTF) of sensory-to-motor synapses in Aplysia. We characterized the structure of the polyubiquitin gene of Aplysia and studied its expression. At least six ubiquitin coding units exist in tandem, one of which encodes a protein with an amino acid sequence identical to human ubiquitin. Although the synthesis of polyubiquitin is induced by strong stimuli in many organisms, we found that the expression of ubiquitin in Aplysia is not affected by protocols that produce LTF.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of NO on c-Fos expression using immunocytochemical techniques, following training in the one-trial passive avoidance response and Morris water maze tasks. Fos-like immunoreactive (FLI) neurons were examined in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of rats in which intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of Nomega-nitro-L-arginine (NAME) was given 30 min before training in the experimental groups. The results showed that: (1) when compared with untreated rats or rats receiving i.c.v. saline injection, fos-like immunoreactive neurons were significantly increased in both brain regions following training in either task, and (2) preceding i.c.v. injections of NAME blocked both the formation of memory and the increased expression of c-Fos in both brain regions subjected to training on the two models. These results suggest that NO production may be a critical factor for the formation of memory and the enhanced c-Fos expression, and so might contribute to the long-term plasticity of synaptic organization in the two brain regions.

Abstract
The number and distribution of Fos-like-immunoreactive neurons in different supraspinal brain areas induced by formalin injection into one hindpaw was estimated in rats with transected dorsal half of the spinal cord at the thoracic level in an attempt to avoid most of the descending modulatory actions. The results showed that: (i) after spinal lesion, the peripheral noxious inputs, going up mainly through the ventral spinal cord, elicited a more widespread and densely located Fos-like-immunoreactive neurons in subcortical areas, many of them showed no Fos expression when noxious stimulation was given in rats with intact spinal cord; (ii) at the same time, a small number of subcortical areas, such as the lateral ventroposterior thalamic nucleus and dorsal raphe nucleus, exhibited no significant increase of nociceptive Fos-like immunoreactive neurons after spinal lesion as compared to that with intact spinal cord; and (iii) there appeared a prominent expansion of cortical areas with densely located Fos-like-immunoreactive neurons in spinal-lesioned rats as compared with the limited labelled areas in the control group with intact spinal cord. These results indicate that: (i) in avoiding the spinally descending modulatory mechanisms, more widespread supraspinal and cortical neurons will be recruited and activated in response to the noxious stimulation; and (ii) the descending systems exert differential actions on the spinal targets which project nociceptive signals to different supraspinal regions. The implication of these facts is discussed.

Abstract
The study was designed to test whether blockade of endogenous NO production affects learning and memory formation in rats. The rats received an intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of the inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, N omega-nitro-L-arginine (NAME), 30 min before each training, and were then tested in the one-trial passive avoidance response and Morris water maze task, respectively. The results showed that: (1) among four concentrations of drug used, only doses higher than 3 mumol of i.c.v. NAME impaired learning and memory formation significantly (p < 0.05) in both test models; (2) in Morris water maze task, the animals treated with highest dose of NAME (5 mumol) failed to learn while those treated with lower doses succeeded; (3) in Morris water maze task, the i.c.v. NAME, even in higher doses, did not affect the capacity of finding a visible platform. It is suggested that NO is involved in learning and memory formation by potentiating or facilitating mainly the acquisition process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the global left ventricular performance in 24 normal subjects, 24 patients suffered from mitral valve disease (MVD) with mitral valve replacement (MVR), and 20 patients with mitral valve replacement with preservation of mitral apparatus (MVRP). METHODS 3DE was used in comparion with the findings of radiography (RNA), two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE), and m-mode (MME). RESULTS EF in 10 patients with MVD as compared with RNA, 3DE showed a higher connection coefficient than 2DE and MME. The EF estimated by MME and 2DE showed no difference between NS and MVD groups, there were significant differences when compared with those examined by 3DE. Two, three months after opertion, the VED and VES in group of MVRP were significantly lower than those in group of MVR (P < 0.01), the EF of MVRP group was remarkably higher than that of MVR group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION 3DE has the ability to estimate the EF of left ventricle more accurately than 2DE and MMe, especially in the patients suffered from chronic MVD with LV shape deformation. The MVR with preservation of mitral apparatus for chronic MVD is beneficial to maintaining the global systolic function after surgery.

Abstract
Ten Ti6Al4V joint prostheses, including 8 hips and 2 knees, were fractured after 1 to 13 years in vivo service following the primary arthroplasty. The metallographs and electronic microscopies, taken from the retrieved components, demonstrated that there are typical characteristics of stress corrosion fatigue. The excessive chemical content of raw material, the presence of interior defects, such as inclosures and porosities, incorrect design features, which violate biomechanic principles, the overheating and improper surface finishing of the parts, and the clinical varus positioning of the hip stem contribute to the device failure. Policies are proposed to overcome this problem. Among them are drawing national mandatory standards on surgical implants, taking strigent administration measures to ensure the quality of joint prostheses and the establishment of training centers for arthroplasty.

Abstract
With a paired study, 23 factors were investigated in 204 school children aged 9-14 in Taiyuan. The results of analysis of logistic regression showed that there was a close relationship between juvenile myopia and TV-watching distance, myopia in parents, Zn: Cu ratio in hair, N score of EPQ, Pscore of EPQ, and verbal IQ. The relations between myopia and some factors were discussed.
