GnRH peripherally modulates nociceptor functions, exacerbating mechanical pain

The function of peripheral nociceptors, the neurons that relay pain signals to the brain, are frequently tuned by local and systemic modulator substances. In this context, neurohormonal effects are emerging as an important modulatory mechanism, but many aspects remain to be elucidated. Here we report that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a brain-specific neurohormone, can aggravate pain by acting on nociceptors in mice. GnRH and GnRHR, the receptor for GnRH, are expressed in a nociceptor subpopulation. Administration of GnRH and its analogue, localized for selectively affecting the peripheral neurons, deteriorated mechanical pain, which was reproducible in neuropathic conditions. Nociceptor function was promoted by GnRH treatment in vitro, which appears to involve specific sensory transient receptor potential ion channels. These data suggest that peripheral GnRH can positively modulate nociceptor activities in its receptor-specific manner, contributing to pain exacerbation. Our study indicates that GnRH plays an important role in neurohormonal pain modulation via a peripheral mechanism.

Stroke walking and balance characteristics via principal component analysis

Balance impairment is associated gait dysfunction with several quantitative spatiotemporal gait parameters in patients with stroke. However, the link between balance impairments and joint kinematics during walking remains unclear. Clinical assessments and gait measurements using motion analysis system was conducted in 44 stroke patients. This study utilised principal component analysis to identify key joint kinematics characteristics of patients with stroke during walking using average joint angles of pelvis and bilateral lower limbs in every gait-cycle percentile related to balance impairments. Reconstructed kinematics showed the differences in joint kinematics in both paretic and nonparetic lower limbs that can be distinguished by balance impairment, particularly in the sagittal planes during swing phase. The impaired balance group exhibited greater joint variability in both the paretic and nonparetic limbs in the sagittal plane during entire gait phase and during terminal swing phase respectively compared with those with high balance scores. This study provides a more comprehensive understanding of stroke hemiparesis gait patterns and suggests considering both nonparetic and paretic limb function, as well as bilateral coordination in clinical practice. Principal component analysis can be a useful assessment tool to distinguish differences in balance impairment and dynamic symmetry during gait in patients with stroke.

Inverted nucleation for photoinduced nonequilibrium melting

Ultrafast photoinduced melting provides an essential platform for studying nonequilibrium phase transitions by linking the kinetics of electron dynamics to ionic motions. Knowledge of dynamic balance in their energetics is essential to understanding how the ionic reaction is influenced by femtosecond photoexcited electrons with notable time lag depending on reaction mechanisms. Here, by directly imaging fluctuating density distributions and evaluating the ionic pressure and Gibbs free energy from two-temperature molecular dynamics that verified experimental results, we uncovered that transient ionic pressure, triggered by photoexcited electrons, controls the overall melting kinetics. In particular, ultrafast nonequilibrium melting can be described by the reverse nucleation process with voids as nucleation seeds. The strongly driven solid-to-liquid transition of metallic gold is successfully explained by void nucleation facilitated by photoexcited electron-initiated ionic pressure, establishing a solid knowledge base for understanding ultrafast nonequilibrium kinetics.

Dynamic three-dimensional structures of a metal-organic framework captured with femtosecond serial crystallography

Crystalline systems consisting of small-molecule building blocks have emerged as promising materials with diverse applications. It is of great importance to characterize not only their static structures but also the conversion of their structures in response to external stimuli. Femtosecond time-resolved crystallography has the potential to probe the real-time dynamics of structural transitions, but, thus far, this has not been realized for chemical reactions in non-biological crystals. In this study, we applied time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography (TR-SFX), a powerful technique for visualizing protein structural dynamics, to a metal-organic framework, consisting of Fe porphyrins and hexazirconium nodes, and elucidated its structural dynamics. The time-resolved electron density maps derived from the TR-SFX data unveil trifurcating structural pathways: coherent oscillatory movements of Zr and Fe atoms, a transient structure with the Fe porphyrins and Zr6 nodes undergoing doming and disordering movements, respectively, and a vibrationally hot structure with isotropic structural disorder. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using TR-SFX to study chemical systems.

First Measurement of the |t| Dependence of Incoherent J/ψ Photonuclear Production

The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10^{-3}. Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1  GeV^{2} and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy to Probe Surface-Localized Nonthermal Plasma Activation

Low-temperature, nonthermal plasmas generate a complex environment even when operated in nonreactive gases. Plasma-produced species impinge on exposed surfaces, and their thermalization is highly localized at the surface. Here we present a Raman thermometry approach to quantifying the resulting degree of surface heating. A nanostructured silver substrate is used to enhance the Raman signal and make it easily distinguishable from the background radiation from the plasma. Phenyl phosphonic acid is used as a molecular probe. Even under moderate plasma power and density, we measure a significant degree of vibrational excitation for the phenyl group, corresponding to an increase in surface temperature of ∼80 °C at a plasma density of 2 × 1010 cm-3. This work confirms that surface-localized thermal effects can be quantified in low-temperature plasma processes. Their characterization is needed to improve our understanding of the plasma-induced activation of surface reactions, which is highly relevant for a broad range of plasma-driven processes.

Nickel-Catalyzed Hydrofluorination in Unactivated Alkenes: Regio- and Enantioselective C-F Bond Formation

Catalytic formation of a regio- and enantioselective C-F bond chiral center from readily available alkenes is a crucial goal, yet it continues to pose significant challenges in organic synthesis. Here, we report the regioselective formation of C-F bonds facilitated by NiH catalysis and a coordination directing strategy that enables precise hydrofluorination of both terminal and internal alkenes. Notably, we have optimized this methodology to achieve high enantioselectivity in creating aliphatic C-F stereogenic centers especially with β,γ-alkenyl substrates, using a tailored chiral Bn-BOx ligand. Another pivotal finding in our research is the identification of the (+)-nonlinear effect under optimized conditions, allowing for high enantioselectivity even with moderately enantiomerically enriched chiral ligands. Given the significant role of fluorine in pharmaceuticals and synthetic materials, this research offers essential insights into the regioselective and enantioselective formation of C-F bond chiral centers, paving the way for the efficient production of valuable fluorinated compounds.

CRISPR-Cas9 and beyond: identifying target genes for developing disease-resistant plants

Throughout the history of crop domestication, desirable traits have been selected in agricultural products. However, such selection often leads to crops and vegetables with weaker vitality and viability than their wild ancestors when exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Considering the increasing human population and climate change challenges, it is crucial to enhance crop quality and quantity. Accordingly, the identification and utilization of diverse genetic resources are imperative for developing disease-resistant plants that can withstand unexpected epidemics of plant diseases. In this review, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in genome-editing technologies, including zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) technologies. In particular, we classify disease-resistant mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana and several crop plants based on the roles or functions of the mutated genes in plant immunity and suggest potential target genes for molecular breeding of genome-edited disease-resistant plants. Genome-editing technologies are resilient tools for sustainable development and promising solutions for coping with climate change and population increases.

Assisted reproductive techniques and subsequent risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis in offspring: a nationwide birth cohort study in South Korea

OBJECTIVE

The relationship between assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) is controversial. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ART and the risk of asthma and AR in a nationwide, large-scale birth cohort.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This study utilized the National Health Insurance Service data in South Korea to conduct a nationwide, large-scale, population-based birth cohort. We included all infants born between 2017 and 2018. AR, asthma, food allergies, and atopic dermatitis were defined using the International Classification of Diseases tenth edition codes. Asthma was classified as allergic or non-allergic based on accompanying allergic diseases (AR, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis). Using 1:10 propensity score matching, we compared infants conceived through ART with those conceived naturally (non-ART). After matching, logistic regression was used to compare the hazard ratio for asthma and AR between the two groups.

RESULTS

We included 543,178 infants [male infants, 280,194 (51.38%)]. After matching, 8,925 and 74,229 infants were selected for the ART and non-ART groups, respectively. The ART group showed a decreased risk of asthma in the offspring [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41-0.48]. Similarly, for AR, being conceived by ART was associated with a decreased risk of AR (aHR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.12-0.37). ART offspring showed a decreased risk of asthma and AR in offspring compared to that observed in non-ART offspring.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study offers important insights for clinicians, researchers, and parents regarding the health outcomes of ART-conceived infants and enhances our understanding of ART's impact on respiratory health.

XFEL structure of carbonic anhydrase II: a comparative study of XFEL, NMR, X-ray and neutron structures

The combination of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) with serial femtosecond crystallography represents cutting-edge technology in structural biology, allowing the study of enzyme reactions and dynamics in real time through the generation of `molecular movies'. This technology combines short and precise high-energy X-ray exposure to a stream of protein microcrystals. Here, the XFEL structure of carbonic anhydrase II, a ubiquitous enzyme responsible for the interconversion of CO2 and bicarbonate, is reported, and is compared with previously reported NMR and synchrotron X-ray and neutron single-crystal structures.

Impact of rumen cannulation surgery on rumen microbiota composition in Hanwoo steers

Rumen cannulation is a surgical technique used to collect rumen contents from ruminants. However, rumen cannulation surgery may potentially impact the composition of the rumen microbiota. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal alterations in the rumen microbiota composition of Hanwoo steers after cannulation surgery. In this study, eight Hanwoo steers were used; four steers underwent rumen cannulation surgery (cannulation group), while the remaining four were left intact (control group). Rumen samples were collected from all eight steers using the stomach tubing method on the day before surgery (day 0) and on postoperative days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28, resulting in 80 samples (10 timepoints × 8 animals). The microbiota of all 80 samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing with Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology version 2 (QIIME2). There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in all major phyla and most major genera representing at least 0.5% of total sequences across all 80 samples between the control and cannulation groups on the preoperative and postoperative days. However, while the alpha diversity indices did not differ (p > 0.05) between the two groups on the preoperative day, they significantly differed (p < 0.05) between the two groups on the postoperative days. Further, the overall microbial distribution based on both unweighted and weighted principal coordinate analysis plots significantly differed (p < 0.05) between the two groups on both the preoperative and postoperative days. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts indicated that major genera and microbial diversity in the cannulation group decreased following surgery but returned to their initial states by postoperative day 28. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that rumen cannulation surgery affects some major taxa and microbial diversity, suggesting that the rumen cannulation method can alter the composition of rumen microbiota in Hanwoo steers.

A new variant of gallbladder duplication mimicking a choledochal cyst: stepwise management of an unexpected surgical finding

We present a case of previously unclassified duplicated gallbladder which posed a surgical challenge intraoperatively by mimicking a choledochal cyst. An intraoperative cholangiogram was performed followed by a simple cholecystectomy. No further dissection was performed to avoid bile duct injury and complication from the unconventional anatomy. Postoperative imaging and histology, followed by the second operation confirmed findings consistent with the duplicated gallbladder. Through this case, we have demonstrated the principles of safe cholecystectomy and the importance of a staged approach in an unanticipated encounter of anatomical uncertainty, as well as the description of a new variant of duplicated gallbladder.

Simultaneous generation and manipulation of terahertz waves based on nonlinear leaky-waveguide antennas with integrated bianisotropic metasurfaces

We hereby propose and theoretically investigate a new scheme for simultaneous generation and manipulation of terahertz (THz) waves through difference frequency generation facilitated by a metasurface-assisted nonlinear leaky waveguide antenna. The proposed structure integrates a nonlinear optical waveguide, composed of multiple AlxGa1-xAs layers, with a THz leaky waveguide, wherein a bianisotropic metasurface realizes the radiating aperture. By explicitly utilizing the electric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric coupling responses of the metasurface, we demonstrate that the generated THz wave can be induced as a tightly confined, phase-matched guided mode for efficient generation of the THz wave. Additionally, this approach allows the THz wave to be transformed into a directive beam, radiating at a user-defined leakage rate and direction. Our numerical analyses suggest that THz beams ranging from 2.85 THz to 3.05 THz can be steered from 4 ∘ to 40 ∘, utilizing the inherent beam-steering capabilities of the leaky-waveguide antenna. Within this THz frequency spectrum, the phase matching condition is achieved by adjusting the optical wavelengths between 1.6μm and 1.52μm. In particular, the nonlinear conversion efficiency is 2.9 × 10-5 [1/W] at 3 THz.

Complete genome sequence of tulip virus X, a Korean isolate from Tulipa gesneriana

In this study, the presence of tulip virus X (TVX) in Korean tulips was confirmed through high-throughput RNA sequencing. Its complete genome sequence of 6,056 nucleotides was determined via Sanger sequencing, exhibiting a 99.24% nucleotide identity with TVX-J isolate. This signifies a previously unreported presence of TVX outside Japan.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te V . The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The W + c production cross section and the cross section ratio R c ± = σ ( W + + c ¯ ) / σ ( W - + c ) are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in R c ± = 0.950 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.010 (syst) . The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

National long-term trends in health-related quality of life using EQ-5D-3L in South Korea, 2008-2021, including the COVID-19 pandemic: a representative serial study of 2.8 million people

OBJECTIVE

There is a scarcity of literature investigating the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on long-term trends in health-related quality of life (HrQoL) using large-scale and representative data. Thus, we aimed to investigate the nationwide and long-term trends in quality of life (QoL) using the European Quality of Life- 5 dimensions, 3-level version (EQ-5D-3L) from a Korean representative serial study of 2.8 million people, 2008-2021.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

This Korean study used data on adults between 2008 and 2021 who participated in the Community Health Survey. Timeframes were categorized as COVID-19 mid-pandemic (2021) and pre-pandemic (2008-2019). The mean EQ-5D-3L index for the whole population and subgroups stratified by demographic characters was evaluated for each timeframe, and differences between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were also analyzed.

RESULTS

2,827,240 adults who responded to the survey, 2008-2021, were eligible for this study. Overall EQ-5D index persistently decreased from 2008-2016, then minimally decreased during the pandemic, still being much higher than forecasted before the COVID-19 pandemic. The reduction in the rate of decline in QoL after the COVID-19 outbreak was especially marked in white-collared, young adults, people with 'good' or 'very good' subjective health, and college-educated or above group. On the other hand, the previously increasing trend of QoL in the elderly group has decelerated during the pandemic, and QoL of the 'very bad' subjective health group recorded the lowest in the whole study period.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study investigated the long-term trend of QoL in Korean adults using serial data over the past 14 years, with a special emphasis on comparing the pre- and mid-COVID-19 pandemic periods.

Health and job-related factors associated with work ability in older working populations of Korea

BACKGROUND

Knowledge about determinants of workability is crucial for designing interventions to increase the participation of older employees in the workforce and maintain or increase their productivity levels at work.

AIMS

This study explored the impact of health conditions and job characteristics on poor work ability.

METHODS

This study used data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from 2014 to 2020, which is a nationally representative population-based panel study of Korean citizens aged ≥45 years. The KLoSA survey assessed subjective work ability using work ability score. The participants were asked if they had been diagnosed with any underlying diseases by a physician. The job characteristics were assessed in terms of working conditions and satisfaction. Generalized estimating equations were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for workers' health-related variables and job characteristics associated with poor work ability.

RESULTS

The results showed that workers' health-related factors were associated with poor work ability; poor vision (OR = 1.52) and bad hearing ability (OR = 2.37); low gripping strength (OR = 2.29); poor self-rated health (OR = 3.77) and various diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung disease, liver disease, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, mental illness, arthritis, prostate disease, gastrointestinal disease and disc disease. Additionally, high physical work demands (OR = 1.51) and low job satisfaction (OR = 4.23) were highly correlated with poor work ability.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings addressing poor work abilities caused by individuals' health- and job-related factors can help prioritize worker health management and the development of more effective human capital investment strategies at the workplace.

Stress-induced translation of KCNB1 contributes to the enhanced synaptic transmission of the lateral habenula

The lateral habenula (LHb) is a well-established brain region involved in depressive disorders. Synaptic transmission of the LHb neurons is known to be enhanced by stress exposure; however, little is known about genetic modulators within the LHb that respond to stress. Using recently developed molecular profiling methods by phosphorylated ribosome capture, we obtained transcriptome profiles of stress responsive LHb neurons during acute physical stress. Among such genes, we found that KCNB1 (Kv2.1 channel), a delayed rectifier and voltage-gated potassium channel, exhibited increased expression following acute stress exposure. To determine the roles of KCNB1 on LHb neurons during stress, we injected short hairpin RNA (shRNA) against the kcnb1 gene to block its expression prior to stress exposure. We observed that the knockdown of KCNB1 altered the basal firing pattern of LHb neurons. Although KCNB1 blockade did not rescue despair-like behaviors in acute learned helplessness (aLH) animals, we found that KCNB1 knockdown prevented the enhancement of synaptic strength in LHb neuron after stress exposure. This study suggests that KCNB1 may contribute to shape stress responses by regulating basal firing patterns and neurotransmission intensity of LHb neurons.

Retrieval of aerosol optical properties from GOCI-II observations: Continuation of long-term geostationary aerosol monitoring over East Asia

Since the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) was successfully launched in 2010, the GOCI Yonsei aerosol retrieval (YAER) algorithm has been continuously updated to retrieve hourly aerosol optical properties. GOCI-II has 4 more channels including UV, finer spatial resolution (250 m), and daily full disk coverage as compared to GOCI, and was launched in February 2020, onboard the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B (GK-2B) satellite. In this study, we extended the YAER algorithm to GOCI-II data based on its improved performance in many aspects and present the first results of aerosol optical properties retrieved from GOCI-II data. Utilizing the overlapping period between the GOCI-II and GOCI in geostationary Earth orbit, we present GOCI-II aerosol retrievals for high aerosol-loading cases over East Asia and show that these have a consistent spatial distribution with those from GOCI. Furthermore, GOCI-II provides AOD at an even higher spatial resolution, revealing finer changes in aerosol concentrations. Validation results for one year data show that the GOCI-II AOD has a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and a ratio within the expected error (EE) of 59.4 % when compared with the aerosol robotic network (AERONET) data. We compared statistical metrics for the GOCI and GOCI-II AODs to assess the consistency between the two datasets. In addition, it was found that there is a strong correlation between the two datasets from the comparison of gridded GOCI and GOCI-II AOD products. It is expected that data from GOCI-II will continue long-term aerosol records with high accuracy that can be used to address air-quality issues over East Asia.

Pamoic acid-induced peripheral GPR35 activation improves pruritus and dermatitis

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Pruritic dermatitis is a disease with a considerable unmet need for treatment and appears to present with not only epidermal but also peripheral neuronal complications. Here, we propose a novel pharmacological modulation targeting both peripheral dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons and skin keratinocytes. GPR35 is an orphan G-protein-coupled receptor expressed in DRG neurons and has been predicted to downregulate neuronal excitability when activated. Modulator information is currently increasing for GPR35, and pamoic acid (PA), a salt-forming agent for drugs, has been shown to be an activator solely specific for GPR35. Here, we investigated its effects on dermatitic pathology.

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

We confirmed GPR35 expression in peripheral neurons and tissues. The effect of PA treatment was pharmacologically evaluated in cultured cells in vitro and in in vivo animal models for acute and chronic pruritus.

KEY RESULTS

Local PA application mitigated acute non-histaminergic itch and, consistently, obstructed DRG neuronal responses. Keratinocyte fragmentation under dermatitic simulation was also dampened following PA incubation. Chronic pruritus in 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and psoriasis models were also moderately but significantly reversed by the repeated applications of PA. Dermatitic scores in the 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and psoriatic models were also improved by its application, indicating that it is beneficial for mitigating disease pathology.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS

Our findings suggest that pamoic acid activation of peripheral GPR35 can contribute to the improvement of pruritus and its associated diseases.

Measurements of Groomed-Jet Substructure of Charm Jets Tagged by D^{0} Mesons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}<30  GeV/c where the emission properties are sensitive to parton mass effects. In addition, the opening angle of the first perturbative emission of the charm quark, as well as the number of perturbative emissions it undergoes, is reported. Comparisons to measurements of an inclusive-jet sample show a steeper splitting function for charm quarks compared with gluons and light quarks. Charm quarks also undergo fewer perturbative emissions in the parton shower, with a reduced probability of large-angle emissions.

Optimizing the maximum reported cluster size for the multinomial-based spatial scan statistic

BACKGROUND

Correctly identifying spatial disease cluster is a fundamental concern in public health and epidemiology. The spatial scan statistic is widely used for detecting spatial disease clusters in spatial epidemiology and disease surveillance. Many studies default to a maximum reported cluster size (MRCS) set at 50% of the total population when searching for spatial clusters. However, this default setting can sometimes report clusters larger than true clusters, which include less relevant regions. For the Poisson, Bernoulli, ordinal, normal, and exponential models, a Gini coefficient has been developed to optimize the MRCS. Yet, no measure is available for the multinomial model.

RESULTS

We propose two versions of a spatial cluster information criterion (SCIC) for selecting the optimal MRCS value for the multinomial-based spatial scan statistic. Our simulation study suggests that SCIC improves the accuracy of reporting true clusters. Analysis of the Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS) data further demonstrates that our method identifies more meaningful small clusters compared to the default setting.

CONCLUSIONS

Our method focuses on improving the performance of the spatial scan statistic by optimizing the MRCS value when using the multinomial model. In public health and disease surveillance, the proposed method can be used to provide more accurate and meaningful spatial cluster detection for multinomial data, such as disease subtypes.

Learning From Noisy Labels With Deep Neural Networks: A Survey

Deep learning has achieved remarkable success in numerous domains with help from large amounts of big data. However, the quality of data labels is a concern because of the lack of high-quality labels in many real-world scenarios. As noisy labels severely degrade the generalization performance of deep neural networks, learning from noisy labels (robust training) is becoming an important task in modern deep learning applications. In this survey, we first describe the problem of learning with label noise from a supervised learning perspective. Next, we provide a comprehensive review of 62 state-of-the-art robust training methods, all of which are categorized into five groups according to their methodological difference, followed by a systematic comparison of six properties used to evaluate their superiority. Subsequently, we perform an in-depth analysis of noise rate estimation and summarize the typically used evaluation methodology, including public noisy datasets and evaluation metrics. Finally, we present several promising research directions that can serve as a guideline for future studies.

Effects of different feeding systems on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, methane emissions, and microbiota of Hanwoo steers

This study evaluates how different feeding systems impact ruminal fermentation, methane production, and microbiota of Hanwoo steers native to Korea. In a replicated 2 × 2 crossover design over 29 days per period, eight Hanwoo steers (507.1 ± 67.4 kg) were fed twice daily using a separate feeding (SF) system comprising separate concentrate mix and forage or total mixed rations (TMR) in a 15:85 ratio. The TMR-feeding group exhibited a considerable neutral detergent fiber digestibility increase than the SF group. However, ruminal fermentation parameters and methane production did not differ between two feeding strategies. In addition, TMR-fed steers expressed elevated Prevotellaceae family, Christensenellaceae R-7 group, and an unidentified Veillonellaceae family genus abundance in their rumen, whereas SF-fed steers were rich in the Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group, Erysipelotrichaceae UCG-004, and Succinivibrio. Through linear regression modeling, positive correlations were observed between the Shannon Diversity Index and the SF group's dry matter intake and methane production. Although feeding systems do not affect methane production, they can alter ruminal microbes. These results may guide future feeding system investigations or ruminal microbiota manipulations as a methane-mitigation practice examining different feed ingredients.

Optical control of ultrafast structural dynamics in a fluorescent protein

The photoisomerization reaction of a fluorescent protein chromophore occurs on the ultrafast timescale. The structural dynamics that result from femtosecond optical excitation have contributions from vibrational and electronic processes and from reaction dynamics that involve the crossing through a conical intersection. The creation and progression of the ultrafast structural dynamics strongly depends on optical and molecular parameters. When using X-ray crystallography as a probe of ultrafast dynamics, the origin of the observed nuclear motions is not known. Now, high-resolution pump-probe X-ray crystallography reveals complex sub-ångström, ultrafast motions and hydrogen-bonding rearrangements in the active site of a fluorescent protein. However, we demonstrate that the measured motions are not part of the photoisomerization reaction but instead arise from impulsively driven coherent vibrational processes in the electronic ground state. A coherent-control experiment using a two-colour and two-pulse optical excitation strongly amplifies the X-ray crystallographic difference density, while it fully depletes the photoisomerization process. A coherent control mechanism was tested and confirmed the wave packets assignment.

Enhancing the Combustion of Magnesium Nanoparticles via Low-Temperature Plasma-Induced Hydrogenation

The hydrogenation of metal nanoparticles provides a pathway toward tuning their combustion characteristics. Metal hydrides have been employed as solid-fuel additives for rocket propellants, pyrotechnics, and explosives. Gas generation during combustion is beneficial to prevent aggregation and sintering of particles, enabling a more complete fuel utilization. Here, we discuss a novel approach for the synthesis of magnesium hydride nanoparticles based on a two-step aerosol process. Mg particles are first nucleated and grown via thermal evaporation, followed immediately by in-flight exposure to a hydrogen-rich low-temperature plasma. During the second step, atomic hydrogen generated by the plasma rapidly diffuses into the Mg lattice, forming particles with a significant fraction of MgH2. We find that hydrogenated Mg nanoparticles have an ignition temperature that is reduced by ∼200 °C when combusted with potassium perchlorate as an oxidizer, compared to the non-hydrogenated Mg material. This is due to the release of hydrogen from the fuel, jumpstarting its combustion. In addition, characterization of the plasma processes suggests that a careful balance between the dissociation of molecular hydrogen and heating of the nanoparticles must be achieved to avoid hydrogen desorption during production and achieve a significant degree of hydrogenation.

Measurement of the top quark mass using a profile likelihood approach with the lepton + jets final states in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The mass of the top quark is measured in 36.3fb - 1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at s = 13 Te V . The measurement uses a sample of top quark pair candidate events containing one isolated electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state. For each event, the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a top quark pair hypothesis. A profile likelihood method is applied using up to four observables per event to extract the top quark mass. The top quark mass is measured to be 171.77 ± 0.37 Ge V . This approach significantly improves the precision over previous measurements.

Complete genome sequence of soybean geminivirus A in soybean in Korea

Soybean geminivirus A (SGVA), a member of the family Geminiviridae, was detected in a survey of early-stage soybean. The complete genome sequence of SGVA isolate Habin was determined, revealing its characteristics and similarity to Korean and Chinese isolates. This study contributes to understanding the impact of SGVA on soybean production.

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404  μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. The γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-} process is observed for τ^{+}τ^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-})=4.8±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst)  μb, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton of a_{τ}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.

A Novel Approach to Support Quality Assurance (QA) of Intensity Modulated Neutron Therapy (IMNT)

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Neutron therapy is a form of high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation treatment shown to be beneficial for the treatment of locally advanced head and neck cancers (HNC) resistant to low LET x-ray and proton therapy treatments. The Clinical Neutron Therapy System (CNTS) at our institution has been in clinical operation for over 35 years, and over 3,400 patients have been treated using 3D conformal neutron radiation therapy. In October of 2022, the clinical commissioning of IMNT was completed and the first-ever patient was treated. A novel patient specific quality assurance (PSQA) program has been developed to support IMNT. We present an analysis of our early experiences and PSQA findings for the first 16+ patients treated with IMNT.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Our pre-treatment IMNT PSQA program includes (1) ionization chamber measurements, (2) a log-file analysis of treatment delivery, and (3) a γ-analysis of the expected and measured doses (fluences) from a novel positron emission portal imaging system based on 12C(n,2n)11C reactions. Patient setup is confirmed on a daily basis with kV portal imaging. We use a modulation factor (MF), defined as the total number of monitor units (MU)/prescribed dose (cGy) per fraction, to identify and help anticipate IMNT plans that may fail our PSQA program.

RESULTS

We have found that IMNT treatments for large, irregularly shaped treatment volumes (e.g., chest wall or head and neck cancers that require treatment of nodes in the lower neck) are more likely to fail PSQA when the MF exceeds 3 MU/cGy. For smaller, more spherical treatment volumes (e.g., base of tongue cancers), plans with a MF up to 3.5 MU/cGy pass our PSQA criteria. Re-optimized plans subsequently passed PSQA with insignificant or no change in tumor coverage and organ-at-risk (OAR) dose. Re-optimized plans also reduced the total number of MU and number of segments, which has the added benefit of decreasing the overall treatment time and patient time on the table. About 10% of early IMNT patients have required plan re-optimization.

CONCLUSION

Our pre-treatment clinical PSQA program and workflow provides useful information to guide IMNT treatment planning and delivery, and helps ensure the safe and accurate delivery of IMNT. Our early experiences suggest IMNT plans with smaller MF values are more likely to pass PSQA than plans with larger values of the MF.

The Feasibility of Fast, Four-Dimensional Computed Tomography-Based O-Ring Linac Plans for Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy in Patients with Poor Performance Status

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

As patients with poor performance status cannot endure long treatment times, it can lead to unplanned and prolonged radiation treatment or discontinuation of treatment. Moreover, prolonged radiation treatment appears to negatively affect survival for patients. We aimed to verify the feasibility of fast 4DCT-based O-ring linear accelerator (LINAC) treatment in lung 4D stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).

MATERIALS/METHODS

This study included data of 38 patients who received lung 4D-SBRT. Gating20-70% plans were based on 4DCT data obtained at phase values ranging from 20-70% using a C-arm LINAC. Non-GatingFB plans were retrospectively established based on 4DCT data obtained at phase values of 0-90% using an O-ring LINAC. The prescribed dose of 4,800 cGy was delivered to PTV in four fractions. The conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), and gradient measurement (GM) of the PTV were analyzed to compare dosimetric data between Gating20-70% and Non-GatingFB plans. Organs at risks (OARs) were analyzed in accordance with the RTOG 0915 protocol. Treatment delivery time and total monitor units (MU) were analyzed to compare the efficiency of treatment delivery. Statistical comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (p<0.05).

RESULTS

For the PTV, there was no significant difference in the CI or HI between Gating20-70% and Non-GatingFB plans (CI: 1.337±0.137, 1.335±0.174, HI: 0.939±0.015, 0.939±0.016, all at p>0.05). However, there was a significant difference in GM between Gating20-70% and Non-GatingFB plan (1.528±0.206 cm, 1.381±0.222 cm, p<0.001). For OARs, all plans met the criteria for dose constraint. There was a significant difference between Gating20-70% and Non-GatingFB plans except in the spinal cord. In particular, D1000cc and D1500cc values for the ipsilateral lung for Gating20-70% plans were 31.6% and 59.9% lower than those for Non-GatingFB plans (D1000cc: 50.780±132.061 cGy, 34.755±102.480 cGy, p<0.001, D1500cc: 6.641±14.598 cGy, 2.666±7.926 cGy, p<0.001). Treatment delivery time was 92% longer for Gating20-70% plans than for Non-GatingFB plans (5.0±0.4 min, 9.6±3.3 min, p = 0.043). The total MU value for Gating20-70% plans was 9.6% higher than that for Non-GatingFB plans (3665.8±230.7, 4016±236.9, p = 0.039).

CONCLUSION

When compared to OARs both plans were acceptable per RTOG-0915 protocol, but significant differences were between Non-GatingFB and Gating20-70% plans. However, treatment delivery time of Non-GatingFB plans decreased by 47.9% than Gating20-70% plans. We verified the feasibility of fast 4DCT-based O-ring LINAC treatment for patients who cannot endure long treatment times due to poor performance status in lung 4D-SBRT. In further study, we will analyze dosimetric differences and treatment delivery efficiency considering tumor motion according to tumor location.

Advances in rectal cancer: Real-world evidence suggests limited gains in prognosis for elderly patients

BACKGROUND

Rectal cancer treatment has improved considerably due to the introduction of total meso-rectal excision, radio-chemotherapy, and high-resolution imaging. The aim of this observational cohort study was to quantify the effectiveness of these advances using high-quality data from a representative cohort of patients.

METHODS

20 281 non-metastasized cases retrieved from the Munich Cancer Registry database were divided into three time periods corresponding to before (1988-1997), partial (1998-2007), and full implementation (2008-2019) of clinical advances. Early-onset (<50 yrs.), middle-aged, elderly patient subgroups (> 70 yrs.) were compared. The overall effectiveness of evidence-based guideline adherence was also examined.

RESULTS

Median survival improved by 1.5 yrs. from the first to the last time period. Relative survival increased from 74.9% (5-yr 95%CI[73.3 - 76.6]) to 79.2% (95%CI[77.8 - 80.5]). The incidence of locoregional recurrences was reduced dramatically by more than half (5-yr 17.7% (95%CI[16.5 - 18.8]); 6.7% (95%CI[6.1 - 7.3])). Gains in 5-yr relative survival were limited to early-onset and middle-aged patients with no significant improvement seen in elderly patients (Female 68.6% [63.9 - 73.3] to 67.6% [64.0 - 71.2]; Male 71.7% [65.9 - 77.4] to 74.0% [70.8 - 77.2]).

CONCLUSIONS

Real-world evidence suggests that recent treatment advances have lead to an increase in prognosis for rectal cancer patients. However, more effort should be made to improve the implementation of new developments in elderly patients. Especially considering, that these cases represent a growing majority of diagnosed patients.

Assessment of Bladder Filling Type on Radiation Dose to Organs at Risk in MR-Guided Intracavity Brachytherapy for Cervical Cancer

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

In this study, we evaluated whether the classification of bladder shape affects the absorbed dose (Gy) of OARs and its geometrical position to normal organs in MR-guided intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT).

MATERIALS/METHODS

In this study, 269 patients who underwent MR-guided ICBT for cervical cancer from 2016 to 2022 were included. The applicator-inserted bladder filling type (BFT) classification was divided into three types (tilted, curved, and other shapes: group E). The anatomical positional relationship between the uterus and its surroundings was measured on pre-MR images and ICBT simulation MR images. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was used for bladder volume and OAR dose according to BFT. Anatomical differences were analyzed by ANOVA by measuring the distance from the center to both bladder walls.

RESULTS

In the correlation analysis considering the shape of the bladder, the tilted, curved, and group E had Spearman's ρ of 0.211; -0.323, 0.412; -0.307 and -0.035; -0.209 for maximum absorbed dose (D2cc) of bladder and small bowel, respectively. It was statistically significant in the tilted type and curved type. The average left and right bladder lengths differences of the tilted type were the highest at 8.47 cm and 7.11 cm, respectively. It was a statistically significant between bladder shape and the difference in left and right bladder lengths differences (p< 0.01).

CONCLUSION

In this study, it was confirmed that bladder distension increased the maximum bladder dose (D2cc) and decreased the maximum bowel dose (D2cc) to the tilted type and curved type. In addition, if the left and right bladder lengths are measured in pre-MR, the degree of bladder distension can be evaluated in advance by checking the shape of the bladder in the case of the tilting type before ICBT. Based on these findings, a prospective study is needed to evaluate the effect of ICBT on cervical cancer treatment outcomes through bladder type classification.

Greywater reuse as a key enabler for improving urban wastewater management

Sustainable water management is essential to guaranteeing access to safe water and addressing the challenges posed by climate change, urbanization, and population growth. In a typical household, greywater, which includes everything but toilet waste, constitutes 50-80% of daily wastewater generation and is characterized by low organic strength and high volume. This can be an issue for large urban wastewater treatment plants designed for high-strength operations. Segregation of greywater at the source for decentralized wastewater treatment is therefore necessary for its proper management using separate treatment strategies. Greywater reuse may thus lead to increased resilience and adaptability of local water systems, reduction in transport costs, and achievement of fit-for-purpose reuse. After covering greywater characteristics, we present an overview of existing and upcoming technologies for greywater treatment. Biological treatment technologies, such as nature-based technologies, biofilm technologies, and membrane bioreactors (MBR), conjugate with physicochemical treatment methods, such as membrane filtration, sorption and ion exchange technologies, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, may be able to produce treated water within the allowable parameters for reuse. We also provide a novel way to tackle challenges like the demographic variance of greywater quality, lack of a legal framework for greywater management, monitoring and control systems, and the consumer perspective on greywater reuse. Finally, benefits, such as the potential water and energy savings and sustainable future of greywater reuse in an urban context, are discussed.

Treatment Outcomes of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Pulmonary Metastasis from Sarcoma: A Multicenter, Retrospective Study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes and potential dose-response relationship of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for pulmonary metastasis of sarcoma.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A retrospective review of 39 patients and 71 lesions treated with SBRT from two institutions was performed. The patients had oligometastatic or oligoprogressive disease, or were receiving palliation. Doses of 20-60 Gy were delivered in 1-5 fractions. The local control per tumor (LCpT) was evaluated according to the biologically effective dose with an α/β ratio of 10 (BED10) of the prescribed dose (BED10 ≥ 100 Gy vs. BED10 < 100 Gy). Clinical outcomes per patient, including local control per patient (LCpP), pulmonary progression-free rate (PPFR), any progression-free rate (APFR), and overall survival (OS) were investigated.

RESULTS

The median follow-up period was 27.2 months. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year LCpT rates for the entire cohort were 100.0%, 88.3%, and 73.6%, respectively. There was no observed difference in LCpT between the two BED10 groups (p = 0.180). The 3-year LCpP, PPFR, APFR, and OS rates were 78.1%, 22.7%, 12.9%, and 83.7%, respectively. Five (12.8%) patients with oligometastasis had long-term disease-free intervals, with a median survival period of 40.7 months. Factors that were associated with a worse prognosis were oligoprogression (vs. oligometastasis), multiple pulmonary metastases, and simultaneous extrathoracic metastasis.

CONCLUSION

SBRT for pulmonary metastasis of sarcoma is effective. Some selected patients may achieve durable response. Considerations of SBRT indication and disease extent may be needed as they may influence the prognosis.

Aggregation-Induced Asymmetric Charge States of Amino Acids in Supramolecular Nanofibers

Electrostatic interactions contribute critically to the kinetic pathways and thermodynamic outcomes of peptide self-assembly involving one or more than one charged amino acids. While it is well understood in protein folding that those amino acids with acidic/basic side chains could shift their pKas when placed in a hydrophobic microenvironment, to what extent aggregation of monomeric peptide units from the bulk solution could alter their charged status and how this change in pKa values would reciprocally impact their assembly outcomes. Here, we design and analyze two solution systems containing peptide amphiphiles with hydrocarbon chains of different lengths to determine the factor of deprotonation on assembly. Our results suggest that models of supramolecular nanofibers with uniformly distributed, fully charged amino acids are oversimplified. We demonstrate, with molecular dynamics simulations, and validate with experimental results that asymmetric, different protonation states of the peptides lead to distinct nanostructures after self-assembly. The results give estimates on the electrostatic interactions in peptide amphiphiles required for their self-assembly and shed light on modeling molecular assembly systems containing charged amino acids.

Measurement of the Lifetime and Λ Separation Energy of _{Λ}^{3}H

The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11(stat)±6(syst)]  ps and B_{Λ}=[102±63(stat)±67(syst)]  keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the _{Λ}^{3}H structure is consistent with a weakly bound system.

Search for Exotic Higgs Boson Decays H→AA→4γ with Events Containing Two Merged Diphotons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

We present the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays H→AA, A→γγ in events with two photonlike objects. The hypothetical particle A is a low-mass spin-0 particle decaying promptly to a merged diphoton reconstructed as a single photonlike object. We analyze the data collected by the CMS experiment at sqrt[s]=13  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136  fb^{-1}. No excess above the estimated background is found. We set upper limits on the branching fraction B(H→AA→4γ) of (0.9-3.3)×10^{-3} at 95% confidence level for masses of A in the range 0.1-1.2 GeV.

4D Visualization of a Nonthermal Coherent Magnon in a Laser Heated Lattice by an X-ray Free Electron Laser

Ultrafast optical manipulation of magnetic phenomena is an exciting achievement of mankind, expanding one's horizon of knowledge toward the functional nonequilibrium states. The dynamics acting on an extremely short timescale push the detection limits that reveal fascinating light-matter interactions for nonthermal creation of effective magnetic fields. While some cases are benchmarked by emergent transient behaviors, otherwise identifying the nonthermal effects remains challenging. Here, a femtosecond time-resolved resonant magnetic X-ray diffraction experiment is introduced, which uses an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) to distinguish between the effective field and the photoinduced thermal effect. It is observed that a multiferroic Y-type hexaferrite exhibits magnetic Bragg peak intensity oscillations manifesting entangled antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) Fourier components of a coherent AFM magnon. The magnon trajectory constructed in 3D space and time domains is decisive to evince ultrafast field formation preceding the lattice thermalization. A remarkable impact of photoexcitation across the electronic bandgap is directly unraveled, amplifying the photomagnetic coupling that is one of the highest among AFM dielectrics. Leveraging the above-bandgap photoexcitation, this energy-efficient optical process further suggests a novel photomagnetic control of ferroelectricity in multiferroics.

Observation of Same-Sign WW Production from Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The first observation of the production of W^{±}W^{±} bosons from double parton scattering processes using same-sign electron-muon and dimuon events in proton-proton collisions is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Multivariate discriminants are used to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds. A binned maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. The measured cross section for production of same-sign W bosons decaying leptonically is 80.7±11.2(stat) _{-8.6}^{+9.5}(syst)±12.1(model)  fb, whereas the measured fiducial cross section is 6.28±0.81(stat)±0.69(syst)±0.37(model)  fb. The observed significance of the signal is 6.2 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.

Measurements of jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum in multijet events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

Multijet events at large transverse momentum (p T ) are measured at s = 13 Te V using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with p T > 50 Ge V that are produced in association with a high-p T dijet system is measured in various ranges of the p T of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference Δ ϕ 1 , 2 between the two highest p T jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest p T jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

Azimuthal correlations in Z +jets events in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV

The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in pp collisions at s = 13 Te V with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum p T > 30 Ge V is measured for different regions of the Z boson's p T ( Z ) , from lower than 10Ge V to higher than 100Ge V . The azimuthal correlation Δ ϕ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of p T ( Z ) . The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low p T ( Z ) regions.

Search for Higgs Boson Decay to a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→cc[over ¯], produced in association with a leptonically decaying V (W or Z) boson is presented. The search is performed with proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Novel charm jet identification and analysis methods using machine learning techniques are employed. The analysis is validated by searching for Z→cc[over ¯] in VZ events, leading to its first observation at a hadron collider with a significance of 5.7 standard deviations. The observed (expected) upper limit on σ(VH)B(H→cc[over ¯]) is 0.94 (0.50_{-0.15}^{+0.22})pb at 95% confidence level (C.L.), corresponding to 14 (7.6_{-2.3}^{+3.4}) times the standard model prediction. For the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κ_{c}, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. interval is 1.1<|κ_{c}|<5.5 (|κ_{c}|<3.4), the most stringent constraint to date.

Azimuthal Correlations within Exclusive Dijets with Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-Lead Collisions

The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The first measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations of exclusively produced events with two jets in photon-lead interactions at large momentum transfer is presented, a process that is considered to be sensitive to the underlying nuclear gluon polarization. This study uses a data sample of ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.38  nb^{-1}, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measured second harmonic of the correlation between the sum and difference of the two jet transverse momentum vectors is found to be positive, and rising, as the dijet transverse momentum increases. A well-tuned model that has been successful at describing a wide range of proton scattering data from the HERA experiments fails to describe the observed correlations, suggesting the presence of gluon polarization effects.

Phase II study of a trastuzumab biosimilar in combination with paclitaxel for HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic urothelial carcinoma: KCSG GU18-18

BACKGROUND

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a widely explored therapeutic target in solid tumors. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of trastuzumab-pkrb, a biosimilar of trastuzumab, in combination with paclitaxel, in HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (UC).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We enrolled 27 patients; they were administered a loading dose of 8 mg/kg trastuzumab-pkrb on day 1, followed by 6 mg/kg and 175 mg/m2 paclitaxel on day 1 every 3 weeks, intravenously. All patients received six cycles of the combination treatment and continued to receive trastuzumab-pkrb maintenance until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or for up to 2 years. HER2 positivity (based on immunohistochemistry analysis) was determined according to the 2013 American Society of Clinical Oncology /College of American Pathologists HER2 testing guidelines. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR); the secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and safety.

RESULTS

Twenty-six patients were evaluated via primary endpoint analysis. The ORR was 48.1% (1 complete and 12 partial responses) and the duration of response was 6.9 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.4-9.3 months]. With a median follow-up of 10.5 months, the median PFS and OS were 8.4 months (95% CI 6.2-8.8 months) and 13.5 months (95% CI 9.8 months-not reached), respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse event (TRAE) of any grade was peripheral neuropathy (88.9%). The most common grade 3/4 TRAEs were neutropenia (25.9%), thrombocytopenia (7.4%), and anemia (7.4%).

CONCLUSIONS

Trastuzumab-pkrb plus paclitaxel demonstrates promising efficacy with manageable toxicity profiles in patients with HER2-positive recurrent or metastatic UC.

Optimized terahertz pulse generation with chirped pump pulses from an echelon-based tilted-pulse-front (TPF) scheme

We successfully demonstrated the generation of single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses through tilted-pulse-front (TPF) pumping using a reflective echelon in a lithium niobate crystal. By optimizing the pump pulse duration using a chirp, we achieved a maximum pump-to-THz conversion efficiency of 0.39%. However, we observed that the saturation behavior began at a relatively low pump energy (0.37 mJ), corresponding to a pump intensity of 22 GW/cm2. To elucidate this behavior, we measured the near- and far-field THz beam profiles and found variations in their beam characteristics, such as the beam size, location, and divergence angle in the plane of the tilted pulse direction, with the pump energy (intensity). This nonlinear behavior is attributed to the reduced effective interaction length, which ultimately leads to the saturation of THz generation. The results obtained from our study suggest that it is feasible to develop an effective THz source using echelon-based TPF pumping while also considering the impact of nonlinear saturation effects.
