Gender differences in the surgical management of trachomatous trichiasis: an exploratory analysis of global trachoma survey data, 2015-2019

BACKGROUND

Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is a painful, potentially blinding eye condition that can be managed through epilation or surgery. Women are affected by TT approximately twice as often as men and are believed to face gendered barriers to receiving surgical care to prevent vision loss.

METHODS

We used data from 817 cross-sectional surveys conducted during 2015-2019 in 20 African countries to estimate the prevalence difference (PD) between female and male eyes for four outcomes potentially indicating gender-related differences in TT management: (1) received surgery and developed postoperative TT (PTT), (2) never offered surgery, (3) offered surgery but declined it, and (4) offered epilation but never offered surgery.

RESULTS

The prevalence was modestly elevated among female eyes compared with male eyes for having PTT (PD:1.8 [95% confidence limits (CL): 0.6, 3.0]) and having declined surgery for the eye (PD: 6.2 [95% CL: 1.8, 10.7]). The proportion offered epilation was similar by gender (PD:0.5 [95% CL: -0.4, 1.3]), while never having been offered surgery was somewhat more prevalent among male eyes (PD: -2.1 [95% CL: -3.5, -0.7]).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest potential gender differences in TT management. More research is needed to determine the causes and implications of the observed differences.

The effects of art therapy on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in adults with cancer: a systematic literature review

PURPOSE

While there is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of psychosocial support programs for cancer patients, little attention has been paid to creativity or art as a way of addressing their psychological problems and improving quality of life. This review provides an overview of interventional studies that investigate the effects of art therapy interventions on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in adults with cancer.

METHODS

We conducted a literature review with a systematic search. The databases PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE were searched for articles on art therapy among adult (18 years and above) cancer patients, published between September 2009 up to September 2019. Search terms were established for each database specifically. A total of 731 publications was assessed for relevance by title and abstract. The remaining 496 articles were examined using three inclusion criteria: interventions were guided by an artist or art therapist, participants were actively involved in the creative process, and anxiety, depression, and/or quality of life were included as outcome measures. Methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using specific checklists.

RESULTS

Seven papers met the inclusion criteria. Data was extracted from three non-randomized intervention studies and four randomized controlled trials. All studies used a quantitative design with validated outcome measures. Four articles described positive effects of art therapy on anxiety, depression, or quality of life in adults with cancer.

CONCLUSION

Art therapy could possibly help decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve quality of life in adult cancer patients. However, because of the heterogeneity of the interventions and limited methodological quality of the studies, further research using stringent methods is needed.

Olfactory preferences in two strains of wild mice, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus, and their hybrids

We studied olfactory preferences of two strains of mice, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus (considered here to be subspecies), and their hybrids, to examine the possible role of odours as a behavioural, premating mechanism that could explain the characteristics of their natural hybrid zone. We used a choice test with the bedding material of animals of the opposite sex from the animal tested and from both subspecies. Male and female M. m. domesticus showed no preference either for their own subspecies' odours or for the other subspecies' odours. In contrast, M. m. musculus individuals and three types of hybrids (all the female hybrids and males from crosses between an M. m. musculus female and an M. m. domesticus male) sniffed for longer at materials from the musculus source than from the domesticus source. We interpreted the results as a preference for musculus odours. Differences between the two subspecies in their response towards consubspecific and heterosubspecific odours could explain the asymmetrical introgression observed in the hybrid zone.Copyright 1998 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour

Organization of the serotoninergic system in the brain of two amphibian species, Ambystoma mexicanum (Urodela) and Typhlonectes compressicauda (Gymnophiona)

An immunocytochemical investigation was made of the distribution of serotonin (5-HT) in the brain of larval and adult Ambystoma mexicanum and adult Typhlonectes compressicauda. Immunoreactive perikarya can be identified in the caudal diencephalon (paraventricular organ and infundibular nucleus), in the ventral mesencephalon (interpeduncular nucleus) and in the raphe of the rhombencephalon. Immunopositive fibers and terminal arborizations are widely distributed, extending from the whole telencephalon to the spinal lemniscus area. However, the retinorecipient structures of the thalamus and mesencephalon are either very weakly innervated (Ambystoma) or completely immunonegative (Typhlonectes). The habenular system also exhibits very few 5-HT-positive structures. The major serotoninergic neuron clusters, in both Urodela and Gymnophiona, tend to gather, from the paraventricular organ to the raphe, on both sides of the sagittal plane, showing no tendency to "lateralization". A new interpretation of the limited development of the serotoninergic system in amphibians is given.
