Spin-dependent charge transmission through chiral 2T3N self-assembled monolayer on Au

A gold surface is functionalized by chemisorption of the enantiopure N,N'-bis-[2,2';5',2″]tert-thiophene-5-yl methylcyclohexane-1,2-diamine (2T3N), a chiral oligothiophene derivative, via overnight incubation in a 2T3N ethanol solution. The Au|2T3N interface is characterized by x-ray photoelectron circular dichroism and comparing x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and electro-desorption results. Charge transmission at the Au|2T3N| solution interface is characterized by recording the cyclic voltammetry of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reversible redox couple, finding a charge transfer rate constant, k°, variation from 1 × 10-1 to 3.3 × 10-2 cm s-1, when comparing the bare Au and the Au|2T3N interfaces, respectively. The "anomalous" high value of k° found for the chiral Au|2T3N interface can be rationalized on the basis of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect, as further proved by magnetic-conductive atomic force microscopy measurements at room temperature. A spin polarization of about 30% is found.

Magnetron Sputtering Deposition of High Quality Cs3Bi2I9 Perovskite Thin Films

Nontoxic all-inorganic perovskites are among the most promising materials for the realization of optoelectronic devices. Here, we present an innovative way to deposit lead-free, totally inorganic Cs3Bi2I9 perovskite from vapor phase. Taking use of a magnetron sputtering system equipped with a radiofrequency working mode power supply and a single target containing the correct ratio of CsI and BiI3 salts, it was possible to deposit a Cs3Bi2I9 perovskitic film on silicon and soda-lime glass. The target composition was optimized to obtain a stoichiometric deposition, and the best compromise was found with a mix enriched with 20% w/w of CsI. Secondly, the effect of post-deposition thermal treatments (150 °C and 300 °C) and of the deposition on a preheat substrate (150 °C) were evaluated by analyzing the chemical composition, the morphology, the crystal structure, and the optical properties. The thermal treatment at 150 °C improved the uniformity of the perovskite film; the one at 300 °C damaged the perovskite deposited. Depositing on a preheated substrate at 150 °C, the obtained film showed a higher crystallinity. An additional thermal treatment at 150 °C on the film deposed on the preheated substrate showed that the crystallinity remains high, and the morphology becomes more uniform.

Characterization of the Response of Magnetron Sputtered In2O3-x Sensors to NO2

The response of resistive In₂O_3-x sensing devices was investigated as a function of the NO₂ concentration in different operative conditions. Sensing layers are 150 nm thick films manufactured by oxygen-free room temperature magnetron sputtering deposition. This technique allows for a facile and fast manufacturing process, at same time providing advantages in terms of gas sensing performances. The oxygen deficiency during growth provides high densities of oxygen vacancies, both on the surface, where they are favoring NO₂ absorption reactions, and in the bulk, where they act as donors. This n-type doping allows for conveniently lowering the thin film resistivity, thus avoiding the sophisticated electronic readout required in the case of very high resistance sensing layers. The semiconductor layer was characterized in terms of morphology, composition and electronic properties. The sensor baseline resistance is in the order of kilohms and exhibits remarkable performances with respect to gas sensitivity. The sensor response to NO₂ was studied experimentally both in oxygen-rich and oxygen-free atmospheres for different NO₂ concentrations and working temperatures. Experimental tests revealed a response of 32%/ppm at 10 ppm NO₂ and response times of approximately 2 min at an optimal working temperature of 200 °C. The obtained performance is in line with the requirements of a realistic application scenario, such as in plant condition monitoring.

Temperature-Dependent Amplified Spontaneous Emission in CsPbBr3 Thin Films Deposited by Single-Step RF-Magnetron Sputtering

Due to their high optical efficiency, low-cost fabrication and wide variety in composition and bandgap, halide perovskites are recognized nowadays as real contenders for the development of the next generation of optoelectronic devices, which, among others, often require high quality over large areas which is readily attainable by vacuum deposition. Here, we report the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of two CsPbBr₃ films obtained by single-step RF-magnetron sputtering from a target containing precursors with variable compositions. Both the samples show ASE over a broad range of temperatures from 10 K up to 270 K. The ASE threshold results strongly temperature dependent, with the best performance occurring at about 50 K (down to 100 µJ/cm²), whereas at higher temperatures, there is evidence of thermally induced optical quenching. The observed temperature dependence is consistent with exciton detrapping up to about 50 K. At higher temperatures, progressive free exciton dissociation favors higher carrier mobility and increases trapping at defect states with consequent emission reduction and increased thresholds. The reported results open the way for effective large-area, high quality, organic solution-free deposited perovskite thin films for optoelectronic applications, with a remarkable capability to finely tune their physical properties.

Electrodeposition of Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Nanoparticles on Monocrystalline Silicon

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted great attention for its unique chemical and physical properties. The applications of this transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) range from supercapacitors to dye-sensitized solar cells, Li-ion batteries and catalysis. This work opens new routes toward the use of electrodeposition as an easy, scalable and cost-effective technique to perform the coupling of Si with molybdenum disulfide. MoS2 deposits were obtained on n-Si (100) electrodes by electrochemical deposition protocols working at room temperature and pressure, as opposed to the traditional vacuum-based techniques. The samples were characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS).

Magnetron Sputtered CsPbCl3 Perovskite Detectors as Real-Time Dosimeters for Clinical Radiotherapy

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of manufacturing thin real-time relative dosimeters for clinical radiotherapy (RT) with potential applications for transmission monitoring in vivo dosimetry and pre-treatment dose verifications. Thin (≈1μm) layers of a high sensitivity, wide bandgap semiconductor, the inorganic perovskite CsPbCl₃, have been grown for the first time by magnetron sputtering on plastic substrates equipped with electrode arrays. Prototype devices have been tested in real-time configuration to evaluate the dose delivered by a 6MV photon beam from a linear accelerator. Linearity of the charge with the dose has been verified over three order of magnitudes, linearity of the current signal with the dose rate has been also successfully tested in the range 0.5-4.3Gy/min. The combination of high sensitivity per unit volume and wide bandgap provides high signal-to-noise ratios, up to 70, even at moderate applied voltages. The Schottky diode configuration allows the detector to operate without bias voltage (null bias).The blocking-barrier structure allows to confine the active volume within sub-millimetric sizes, a quite attractive feature in view to increase granularity and achieve the high spatial resolutions required in modern RT techniques. All the above-mentioned features indeed pave the way to a novel generation of flexible, transmission, real time dosimeters for clinical radiotherapy.

Electrical and Optical Characterization of CsPbCl3 Films around the High-Temperature Phase Transitions

Large-area CsPbCl₃ films in the range 0.1–1.5 μm have been grown by radio frequency (RF)-magnetron sputtering on glass substrates by means of a one-step procedure. Three structural phase transitions have been detected, which are associated with hysteresis behavior in the electrical current when measured as a function of temperature in the range 295–330 K. Similarly, photoluminescence (PL) experiments in the same temperature range bring evidence of a non-monotonic shift of the PL peak. Detailed electrical characterizations evidenced how phase transitions are not influencing detrimentally the electrical transport properties of the films. In particular, the activation energy (0.6–0.8 eV) extracted from the temperature-dependent film resistivity does not appear to be correlated with phase changes. A non-linear trend of the photoconductivity response as a function of a ultra violet (UV) 365 nm light emitting diode (LED) power has been interpreted considering the presence of an exponential tail of intragap defects. Thermally stimulated currents after exposure with the same LED measured from room temperature up to 370 K showed no evidence of trapping effects due to intragap states on the electrical transport properties at room temperature of the films. As a consequence, measured photocurrents at room temperature appear to be well reproducible and stable in time, which are attractive features for possible future applications in photodetection.

Large-Area Nanocrystalline Caesium Lead Chloride Thin Films: A Focus on the Exciton Recombination Dynamics

Caesium lead halide perovskites were recently demonstrated to be a relevant class of semiconductors for photonics and optoelectronics. Unlike CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3, the realization of high-quality thin films of CsPbCl3, particularly interesting for highly efficient white LEDs when coupled to converting phosphors, is still a very demanding task. In this work we report the first successful deposition of nanocrystalline CsPbCl3 thin films (70-150 nm) by radio frequency magnetron sputtering on large-area substrates. We present a detailed investigation of the optical properties by high resolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, resolved in time and space in the range 10-300 K, providing quantitative information concerning carriers and excitons recombination dynamics. The PL is characterized by a limited inhomogeneous broadening (~15 meV at 10 K) and its origin is discussed from detailed analysis with investigations at the micro-scale. The samples, obtained without any post-growth treatment, show a homogeneous PL emission in spectrum and intensity on large sample areas (several cm2). Temperature dependent and time-resolved PL spectra elucidate the role of carrier trapping in determining the PL quenching up to room temperature. Our results open the route for the realization of large-area inorganic halide perovskite films for photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Fe-functionalized paramagnetic sporopollenin from pollen grains: one-pot synthesis using ionic liquids

The preparation of Fe-decorated sporopollenins was achieved using pollen grains and an ionic liquid as solvent and functionalizing agent. The integrity of the organic capsules was ascertained through scanning electron microscopy studies. The presence of Fe in the capsule was investigated using FT-IR, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetization measurements allowed us to demonstrate the paramagnetic behavior of our Fe-functionalized sporopollenin. A few potential applications of pollen-based systems functionalized with magnetic metal ions via ionic liquids are discussed.

A new route for high quality nanometric films of inorganic halide perovskites

Successful deposition of CsPbX3 (X = Br, Cl) thin films (50-500 nm) on several kind of substrates has been realized by Radio-Frequency Magnetron Sputtering. The technique allows for high homogeneity of the samples on large areas (several cm2) not only in terms of morphology but also referring to the optical properties. In particular, high resolution (in space, spectrum and time) photoluminescence studies in a wide temperature range (10-300 K) reveal that the low inhomogeneous broadening comes from a submicron size disorder while no significant contribution arises from a micrometric or even larger disorder. Given the relevance of inorganic halide perovskites for innovative optoelectronic devices, our results prove the scalability of this technique. Moreover, the successful deposition on several different substrates open the route for an easy integration in multi-layered structures.

First Proof-of-Principle of Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskites Deposition by Magnetron-Sputtering

The present work reports the application of RF-magnetron sputtering technique to realize CsPbBr3 70 nm thick films on glass substrate by means of a one-step procedure. The obtained films show highly uniform surface morphology and homogeneous thickness as evidenced by AFM and SEM investigations. XRD measurements demonstrate the presence of two phases: a dominant orthorhombic CsPbBr3 and a subordinate CsPb2Br5. Finally, XPS data reveals surface bromine depletion respect to the stoichiometrical CsPbBr3 composition, nevertheless photoluminescence spectroscopy results confirm the formation of a highly luminescent film. These preliminary results demonstrate that our approach could be of great relevance for easy fabrication of large area perovskite thin films. Future developments, based on this approach, may include the realization of multijunction solar cells and multicolor light emitting devices.

Continuous-Flow Oxidation of HMF to FDCA by Resin-Supported Platinum Catalysts in Neat Water

The oxidation reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to the bioplastic monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid over heterogenous resin-supported Pt catalysts was investigated in detail, under continuous flow, base-free conditions, and in neat water. The product was continuously obtained in 99 % yield by running the reaction at 120 °C, 303 s residence time, 1.2 mL min^-1 O₂ flow rate, and 7.7 bar O₂ pressure. The product was isolated with a high space-time-yield of 46.0 g L^-1  h^-1 without purifications or acid/base treatments.

Defective States in Micro-Crystalline CsPbBr₃ and Their Role on Photoconductivity

Intrinsic defects in CsPbBr₃ microcrystalline films have been studied using thermally stimulated current (TSC) technique in a wide temperature range (100–400 K). Below room temperature, TSC emission is composed by a set of several energy levels, in the range 0.11–0.27 eV, suggesting a quasi-continuum distribution of states with almost constant density. Above room temperature, up to 400 K, the temperature range of interest for solar cells, both dark current and photocurrent, are mainly dominated by energy levels in the range 0.40–0.45 eV. Even if measured trap densities are high, in the range 10¹³–10¹⁶ cm⁻³, the very small capture cross-sections, about 10⁻²⁶ m², agree with the high defect tolerance characterizing this material.

Thermally condensed humic acids onto silica as SPE for effective enrichment of glucocorticoids from environmental waters followed by HPLC-HESI-MS/MS

Pristine humic acids (HAs) were thermally condensed onto silica microparticles by a one-pot, inexpensive and green preparation route obtaining a mixed-mode sorbent (HA-C@silica) with good sorption affinity for glucocorticoids (GCs). The carbon-based material, characterized by various techniques, was indeed applied as the sorbent for fixed-bed solid-phase extraction of eight GCs from river water and wastewater treatment plant effluent, spiked at different concentration levels in the range 1-400 ng L^-1. After sample extraction, the target analytes were simultaneously and quantitatively eluted in a single fraction of methanol, achieving enrichment factor 4000 and 1000 in river water and wastewater effluent, respectively. Full recovery for all compounds, was gained in the real matrices studied (80-125% in river water, 79-126% in wastewater effluent), with inter-day precision showing relative standard deviations (RSD) below 15% and 18% (n = 3), for river and wastewater effluent, correspondingly. The high enrichment factors coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry quantification (MRM mode) provided method quantification limits of 0.009-0.48 ng L^-1 in river water and 0.06-3 ng L^-1 in wastewater effluent and, at the same time, secure identification of the selected drugs. As also evidenced by comparison with literature, HA-C@silica proved to be a valid alternative to the current commercial sorbents, in terms of extraction capability, enrichment factor, ease of preparation and cost. The batch-to-batch reproducibility was assessed by recovery tests on three independently prepared HA-C@silica powders (RSD lower than 7%).

Room temperature amine sensors enabled by sidewall functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes

A new series of sidewall modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with perfluorophenyl molecules bearing carboxylic acid or methyl ester moieties are herein reported. Pristine and functionalized SWCNTs (p-SWCNTs and f-SWCNTs, respectively) were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The nitrene-based functionalization provided intact SWCNTs with methyl 4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate (SWCNT-N-C6F4CO2CH3) and 4-azido-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid (SWCNT-N-C6F4CO2H) attached every 213 and 109 carbon atoms, respectively. Notably, SWCNT-N-C6F4CO2H was sensitive in terms of the percentage of conductance variation from 5 to 40 ppm of ammonia (NH3) and trimethylamine (TMA) with a two-fold higher variation of conductance compared to p-SWCNTs at 40 ppm. The sensors are highly sensitive to NH3 and TMA as they showed very low responses (0.1%) toward 200 ppm of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) containing various functional groups representative of different classes of analytes such as benzene, tetrahydrofurane (THF), hexane, ethyl acetate (AcOEt), ethanol, acetonitrile (CH3CN), acetone and chloroform (CHCl3). Our system is a promising candidate for the realization of single-use chemiresistive sensors for the detection of threshold crossing by low concentrations of gaseous NH3 and TMA at room temperature.

Enhanced hydrogen photogeneration by bulk g-C3N4 through a simple and efficient oxidation route

The hydrogen production rate under visible light of bulk g-C₃N₄ has been improved 8-fold by a simple oxidation process.

A graphene oxide pH sensor for wound monitoring

This article describes the fabrication and characterization of a pH sensor for monitoring the wound status. The pH sensitive layer consists of a graphene oxide (GO) layer obtained by drop-casting 5 μΐ of GO dispersion onto the working electrode of a screen-printed substrate. Sensitivity was 31.8 mV/pH with an accuracy of 0.3 unit of pH. Open-circuit potentiometry was carried out to measure pH in an exudate sample. The GO pH sensor proved to be reliable as the comparison with results obtained from a standard glass electrode pH-meter showed negligible differences (<; 0.09 pH units in the worst case) for measurements performed over a period of 4 days.

Temperature- and pH-sensitive wearable materials for monitoring foot ulcers

Foot ulcers account for 15% of comorbidities associated with diabetes. Presently, no device allows the status of foot ulcers to be continuously monitored when patients are not hospitalized. In this study, we describe a temperature and a pH sensor capable of monitoring diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers developed in the frame of the seventh framework program European Union project SWAN-iCare (smart wearable and autonomous negative pressure device for wound monitoring and therapy). Temperature is measured by exploiting the variations in the electrical resistance of a nanocomposite consisting of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene). The pH sensor used a graphene oxide (GO) layer that changes its electrical potential when pH changes. The temperature sensor has a sensitivity of ~85 Ω/°C in the range 25°C–50°C and a high repeatability (maximum standard deviation of 0.1% over seven repeated measurements). For a GO concentration of 4 mg/mL, the pH sensor has a sensitivity of ~42 mV/pH and high linearity (R2=0.99).
