The role of the 2D-to-3D transition in x-ray diffraction analysis of crystallite size

The diffraction behaviour of stacked layers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride are studied computationally by direct calculation of the diffraction pattern using the Debye scattering equation. Analysis of the position and profile of the diffraction peaks show that while single-layer graphene is unambiguously a 2D material, ordered stacks of three or more layers diffract as bulk material. Following the Scherrer equation, we correlate the known crystallite size with the diffraction peak parameters and observe strong affine relationships which exist separately for single-layer, bi-layer and three or more layer (bulk) structures. We determine a series of expressions to calculate the crystallite size which do not suffer the well-known size-dependence or rely on assumptions about the shape. We present a detailed workflow showing how these expressions can be applied to experimental data.

Plastic Deformation of Single-Crystal Diamond Nanopillars

Diamond is known to possess a range of extraordinary properties that include exceptional mechanical stability. In this work, it is demonstrated that nanoscale diamond pillars can undergo not only elastic deformation (and brittle fracture), but also a new form of plastic deformation that depends critically on the nanopillar dimensions and crystallographic orientation of the diamond. The plastic deformation can be explained by the emergence of an ordered allotrope of carbon that is termed O8-carbon. The new phase is predicted by simulations of the deformation dynamics, which show how the sp³ bonds of (001)-oriented diamond restructure into O8-carbon in localized regions of deforming diamond nanopillars. The results demonstrate unprecedented mechanical behavior of diamond, and provide important insights into deformation dynamics of nanostructured materials.

Topology of Disordered 3D Graphene Networks

Disordered carbons comprise graphene fragments assembled into three-dimensional networks. It has long been debated whether these networks contain positive curvature, as seen in fullerenes, negative curvature, as proposed for the schwarzite structures, or zero curvature, as in ribbons. We present a mesh-based approach to analyze the topology of a set of nanoporous and glassy carbon models that accurately reproduce experimental properties. Although all three topological elements are present, negatively curved structures dominate. At the atomic level, analysis of local environments shows that sp- and sp^{3}-bonded atoms are associated with line defects and screw dislocations that resolve topological complexities such as termination of free edges and stacking of low curvature regions into ribbons. These results provide insight into the synthesis of porous carbon materials, glassy carbon and the graphitizability of carbon materials.

Vortex fluidic mediated transformation of graphite into highly conducting graphene scrolls

Two-dimensional graphene has remarkable properties that are revolutionary in many applications. Scrolling monolayer graphene with precise tunability would create further potential for niche applications but this has proved challenging. We have now established the ability to fabricate monolayer graphene scrolls in high yield directly from graphite flakes under non-equilibrium conditions at room temperature in dynamic thin films of liquid. Using conductive atomic force microscopy we demonstrate that the graphene scrolls form highly conducting electrical contacts to highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). These highly conducting graphite-graphene contacts are attractive for the fabrication of interconnects in microcircuits and align with the increasing interest in building all sp²-carbon circuits. Above a temperature of 450 °C the scrolls unravel into buckled graphene sheets, and this process is understood on a theoretical basis. These findings augur well for new applications, in particular for incorporating the scrolls into miniaturized electronic devices.

Rare-Earth Orthophosphates From Atomistic Simulations

Lanthanide phosphates (LnPO₄) are considered as a potential nuclear waste form for immobilization of Pu and minor actinides (Np, Am, and Cm). In that respect, in the recent years we have applied advanced atomistic simulation methods to investigate various properties of these materials on the atomic scale. In particular, we computed several structural, thermochemical, thermodynamic and radiation damage related parameters. From a theoretical point of view, these materials turn out to be excellent systems for testing quantum mechanics-based computational methods for strongly correlated electronic systems. On the other hand, by conducting joint atomistic modeling and experimental research, we have been able to obtain enhanced understanding of the properties of lanthanide phosphates. Here we discuss joint initiatives directed at understanding the thermodynamically driven long-term performance of these materials, including long-term stability of solid solutions with actinides and studies of structural incorporation of f elements into these materials. In particular, we discuss the maximum load of Pu into the lanthanide-phosphate monazites. We also address the importance of our results for applications of lanthanide-phosphates beyond nuclear waste applications, in particular the monazite-xenotime systems in geothermometry. For this we have derived a state-of-the-art model of monazite-xenotime solubilities. Last but not least, we discuss the advantage of usage of atomistic simulations and the modern computational facilities for understanding of behavior of nuclear waste-related materials.

Graphitization of Glassy Carbon after Compression at Room Temperature

Glassy carbon is a technologically important material with isotropic properties that is nongraphitizing up to ∼3000 °C and displays complete or "superelastic" recovery from large compression. The pressure limit of these properties is not yet known. Here we use experiments and modeling to show permanent densification, and preferred orientation occurs in glassy carbon loaded to 45 GPa and above, where 45 GPa represents the limit to the superelastic and nongraphitizing properties of the material. The changes are explained by a transformation from its sp^{2} rich starting structure to a sp^{3} rich phase that reverts to fully sp^{2} bonded oriented graphite during pressure release.

Ion implantation in nanodiamonds: size effect and energy dependence

Nanoparticles are ubiquitous in nature and are increasingly important for technology. They are subject to bombardment by ionizing radiation in a diverse range of environments. In particular, nanodiamonds represent a variety of nanoparticles of significant fundamental and applied interest. Here we present a combined experimental and computational study of the behaviour of nanodiamonds under irradiation by xenon ions. Unexpectedly, we observed a pronounced size effect on the radiation resistance of the nanodiamonds: particles larger than 8 nm behave similarly to macroscopic diamond (i.e. characterized by high radiation resistance) whereas smaller particles can be completely destroyed by a single impact from an ion in a defined energy range. This latter observation is explained by extreme heating of the nanodiamonds by the penetrating ion. The obtained results are not limited to nanodiamonds, making them of interest for several fields, putting constraints on processes for the controlled modification of nanodiamonds, on the survival of dust in astrophysical environments, and on the behaviour of actinides released from nuclear waste into the environment.

The structure of junctions between carbon nanotubes and graphene shells

Junctions between carbon nanotubes and flat or curved graphene structures are fascinating for a number of reasons. It has been suggested that such junctions could be used in nanoelectronic devices, or as the basis of three-dimensional carbon materials, with many potential applications. However, there have been few detailed experimental analyses of nanotube-graphene connections. Here we describe junctions between nanotubes and graphene shells in a material produced by passing a current through graphite. Transmission electron micrographs show that the junction angles are not random but fall close to multiples of 30°. We show that connections with these angles are the only ones which are consistent with the symmetry of the hexagonal lattice, and molecular models show that a continuous lattice requires the presence of large carbon rings at the junction. Some of the configurations we propose have not been previously considered, and could be used to construct new kinds of three-dimensional carbon architecture. We also discuss the possible formation mechanism of the junctions.

Fluid dynamic lateral slicing of high tensile strength carbon nanotubes

Lateral slicing of micron length carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is effective on laser irradiation of the materials suspended within dynamic liquid thin films in a microfluidic vortex fluidic device (VFD). The method produces sliced CNTs with minimal defects in the absence of any chemical stabilizers, having broad length distributions centred at ca 190, 160 nm and 171 nm for single, double and multi walled CNTs respectively, as established using atomic force microscopy and supported by small angle neutron scattering solution data. Molecular dynamics simulations on a bent single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with a radius of curvature of order 10 nm results in tearing across the tube upon heating, highlighting the role of shear forces which bend the tube forming strained bonds which are ruptured by the laser irradiation. CNT slicing occurs with the VFD operating in both the confined mode for a finite volume of liquid and continuous flow for scalability purposes.

Bottom-up assembly of metallic germanium

Extending chip performance beyond current limits of miniaturisation requires new materials and functionalities that integrate well with the silicon platform. Germanium fits these requirements and has been proposed as a high-mobility channel material, a light emitting medium in silicon-integrated lasers, and a plasmonic conductor for bio-sensing. Common to these diverse applications is the need for homogeneous, high electron densities in three-dimensions (3D). Here we use a bottom-up approach to demonstrate the 3D assembly of atomically sharp doping profiles in germanium by a repeated stacking of two-dimensional (2D) high-density phosphorus layers. This produces high-density (10¹⁹ to 10²⁰ cm⁻³) low-resistivity (10⁻⁴Ω · cm) metallic germanium of precisely defined thickness, beyond the capabilities of diffusion-based doping technologies. We demonstrate that free electrons from distinct 2D dopant layers coalesce into a homogeneous 3D conductor using anisotropic quantum interference measurements, atom probe tomography, and density functional theory.

Reaction pathways for pyridine adsorption on silicon (0 0 1)

Density functional theory is used to describe the reactions of chemisorption of pyridine on the silicon (0 0 1) surface. Adsorption energies of six relevant structures, and the activation energies between them are reported. We consider in detail the dative to tight-bridge transition for which conflicting results have been reported in the literature, and provide a description of the formation of inter-row chains observed in high-coverage experiments. We demonstrate that the choice of DFT functional has a considerable effect on the relative energetics and of the four DFT functionals considered, we find that the range-separated hybrid ωB97X-D functional with empirical dispersion provides the most consistent description of the experiment data.

Determining the electronic confinement of a subsurface metallic state

Dopant profiles in semiconductors are important for understanding nanoscale electronics. Highly conductive and extremely confined phosphorus doping profiles in silicon, known as Si:P δ-layers, are of particular interest for quantum computer applications, yet a quantitative measure of their electronic profile has been lacking. Using resonantly enhanced photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the real-space breadth of the Si:P δ-layer occupied states and gain a rare view into the nature of the confined orbitals. We find that the occupied valley-split states of the δ-layer, the so-called 1Γ and 2Γ, are exceptionally confined with an electronic profile of a mere 0.40 to 0.52 nm at full width at half-maximum, a result that is in excellent agreement with density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the bulk-like Si 3pz orbital from which the occupied states are derived is sufficiently confined to lose most of its pz-like character, explaining the strikingly large valley splitting observed for the 1Γ and 2Γ states.

Valley splitting in a silicon quantum device platform

By suppressing an undesirable surface Umklapp process, it is possible to resolve the two most occupied states (1Γ and 2Γ) in a buried two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in silicon. The 2DEG exists because of an atomically sharp profile of phosphorus dopants which have been formed beneath the Si(001) surface (a δ-layer). The energy separation, or valley splitting, of the two most occupied bands has critical implications for the properties of δ-layer derived devices, yet until now, has not been directly measurable. Density functional theory (DFT) allows the 2DEG band structure to be calculated, but without experimental verification the size of the valley splitting has been unclear. Using a combination of direct spectroscopic measurements and DFT we show that the measured band structure is in good qualitative agreement with calculations and reveal a valley splitting of 132 ± 5 meV. We also report the effective mass and occupation of the 2DEG states and compare the dispersions and Fermi surface with DFT.

Density and structural effects in the radiation tolerance of TiO₂ polymorphs

The radiation response of TiO₂ has been studied using molecular dynamics. The simulations are motivated by experimental observations that the three low-pressure polymorphs, rutile, brookite and anatase, exhibit vastly different tolerances to amorphization under ion-beam irradiation. To understand the role of structure we perform large numbers of simulations using the small thermal spike method. We quantify to high statistical accuracy the number of defects created as a function of temperature and structure type, and reproduce all the main trends observed experimentally. To evaluate a hypothesis that volumetric strain relative to the amorphous phase is an important driving force for defect recovery, we perform spike simulations in which the crystalline density is varied over a wide range. Remarkably, the large differences between the polymorphs disappear once the density difference is taken into account. This finding demonstrates that density is an important factor which controls radiation tolerance in TiO₂.

Chemical evolution via beta decay: a case study in strontium-90

Using (90)Sr as a representative isotope, we present a framework for understanding beta decay within the solid state. We quantify three key physical and chemical principles, namely momentum-induced recoil during the decay event, defect creation due to physical displacement, and chemical evolution over time. A fourth effect, that of electronic excitation, is also discussed, but this is difficult to quantify and is strongly material dependent. The analysis is presented for the specific cases of SrTiO(3) and SrH(2). By comparing the recoil energy with available threshold displacement data we show that in many beta-decay situations defects such as Frenkel pairs will not be created during decay as the energy transfer is too low. This observation leads to the concept of chemical evolution over time, which we quantify using density functional theory. Using a combination of Bader analysis, phonon calculations and cohesive energy calculations, we show that beta decay leads to counter-intuitive behavior that has implications for nuclear waste storage and novel materials design.

Nonequilibrium route to nanodiamond with astrophysical implications

Nanometer-sized diamond grains are commonly found in primitive chondritic meteorites, but their origin is puzzling. Using evidence from atomistic simulation, we establish a mechanism by which nanodiamonds form abundantly in space in a two-stage process involving condensation of vapor to form carbon onions followed by transformation to nanodiamond in an energetic impact. This nonequilibrium process is consistent with common environments in space and invokes the fewest assumptions of any proposed model. Accordingly, our model can explain nanodiamond formation in both presolar and solar environments. The model provides an attractive framework for understanding noble gas incorporation and explains all key features of meteoritic nanodiamond, including size, shape, and polytype. By understanding the creation of nanodiamonds, new opportunities arise for their exploitation as a powerful astrophysical probe.

Phosphorus δ-doped silicon: mixed-atom pseudopotentials and dopant disorder effects

Within a full density functional theory framework we calculate the band structure and doping potential for phosphorus δ-doped silicon. We compare two different representations of the dopant plane; pseudo-atoms in which the nuclear charge is fractional between silicon and phosphorus, and explicit arrangements employing distinct silicon and phosphorus atoms. While the pseudo-atom approach offers several computational advantages, the explicit model calculations differ in a number of key points, including the valley splitting, the Fermi level and the width of the doping potential. These findings have implications for parameters used in device modelling.

The origin of preferred orientation during carbon film growth

Carbon films were prepared using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition system operated with a substrate bias varying linearly with time during growth. Ion energies were in the range between 95 and 620 eV. Alternating dark, high density (sp(3) rich) bands and light, low density (sp(2) rich) bands were observed using cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, corresponding to abrupt transitions between materials with densities of approximately 3.1 and 2.6 g cm(-3). No intermediate densities were observed in the samples. The low density bands show strong preferred orientation with graphitic sheets aligned normal to the film. After annealing, the low density bands became more oriented and the thinner high density layers were converted to low density material. In molecular dynamics modelling of film growth, temperature activated structural rearrangements occurring over long timescales ([Formula: see text] ps) caused the transition from sp(3) rich to oriented sp(2) rich structure. Once this oriented growth was initiated, the sputtering yield decreased and channelling was observed. However, we conclude that sputtering and channelling events, while they occur, are not the cause of the transition to the oriented structure.

Abrupt stress induced transformation in amorphous carbon films with a highly conductive transition phase

We demonstrate that when, and only when, the biaxial stress is increased above a critical value of 6+/-1 GPa during the growth of a carbon film at room temperature, tetrahedral amorphous carbon is formed. This confirms that the stress present during the formation of an amorphous carbon film determines its sp;{3} bonding fraction. In the vicinity of the critical stress, a highly oriented graphitelike material is formed which exhibits low electrical resistance and provides Ohmic contacts to silicon. Atomistic simulations reveal that the structural transitions are thermodynamically driven and not the result of dynamical effects.

Duplex-guided infrainguinal balloon angioplasty and stenting. A 4-year experience

AIM

The traditional technique of infrainguinal arterial balloon angioplasties involves the use of fluoroscopy and contrast material. We performed these procedures under duplex guidance to eliminate radiation exposure and avoid nephrotoxic effect of contrast.

METHODS

Over the last four years, 274 patients (59% males) with a mean age of 74+/-9 years (range 42-97 years) had a total of 360 attempted balloon angioplasties of the superficial femoral (SFA) and/or popliteal arteries under duplex guidance. Cannulation of common femoral artery, manipulation of the guidewire across the stenoses and/or occlusions of the SFA and/or popliteal artery, and balloon dilation were achieved with duplex guidance alone. Infrapopliteal angioplasties of 80 arteries were attempted in 54 cases (15% of all cases).

RESULTS

Overall technical success for femoral-popliteal segment was 95% (342/360 cases) and 96% (77/80 cases) for infrapopliteal segment.

CONCLUSION

Duplex guided balloon angioplasty and stent placement appears to be a safe and effective technique for treatment of femoral-popliteal and infrapopliteal arterial occlusive disease.

Inhaled allergen-driven CD1c up-regulation and enhanced antigen uptake by activated human respiratory-tract dendritic cells in atopic asthma

BACKGROUND

Dendritic cells (DC) mediate inflammation in rodent models of allergic airway disease, but the role played by human respiratory-tract DC (hRTDC) in atopic asthma remains poorly defined. Recent data suggest that CD1 antigen presentation by hRTDC may contribute to asthma pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the influence of hRTDC on the balance between atopy and allergic asthma in human subjects and to determine whether CD1 expression by hRTDC is modulated during asthmatic inflammation.

METHODS

Sputum cells were induced from steroid-naïve, allergen-challenged and allergen-naïve subjects (atopic asthmatics, atopic non-asthmatics and non-atopic controls). hRTDC were identified using monoclonal antibody labelling and analysis by flow cytometry.

RESULTS

hRTDC stained HLA-DR(+) (negative for markers of other cell lineages) were predominantly myeloid and comprised approximately 0.5% of viable sputum cells. Sputum cells were potent stimulators of allogeneic CD4(+) naïve T cells and enrichment/depletion experiments correlated stimulatory potency with DC numbers. Sputum contained cells that exhibited typical dendritic morphology when analysed by electron microscopy. Myeloid hRTDC were endocytically active, but uptake of FITC-dextran was enhanced in cells from asthmatics (P<0.001). Despite their increased endocytic capacity, asthmatic myeloid hRTDC appeared mature and expressed increased levels of maturation markers (P<0.05-P<0.001), CD1c, CD1d and langerin (P<0.05). CD1c expression by asthmatic myeloid hRTDC was enhanced upon in vivo allergen challenge (three to ninefold within 24 h; P<0.05). CD11c(-)CD123(high) hRTDC were only detected in asthmatic sputum and were increased in number following allergen challenge.

CONCLUSION

Despite limited cell numbers, it proved possible to analyse human RTDC in induced sputum, providing evidence that increased antigen uptake and enhanced CD1 presentation by activated hRTDC may contribute to allergic airway disease. CD1 presentation by hRTDC in atopic asthma may therefore constitute a novel target for future intervention strategies.

Duplex Guided Balloon Angioplasty of Failing Infrainguinal Bypass Grafts

OBJECTIVE

To assess the results of angioplasty and stent placement under duplex guidance for failing grafts.

METHODS

Over 22 months, 25 patients (72% males) with a mean age of 74+/-10 years presented to our institution with a failing infrainguinal bypass. The site of the most significant stenotic lesion was in the inflow in four cases, conduit in 18 cases and at the outflow in 11 cases. All arterial (20) or graft (13) entry sites cannulations were performed under direct duplex visualization. Duplex scanning was the sole imaging modality used to manipulate the guide wire and directional catheters from the ipsilateral CFA to a site beyond the most distal stenotic lesion. Selection and placement of balloons and stents were also guided by duplex. In 11 cases (33%), the contralateral CFA was used as the entry site and a standard approach (fluoroscopy and contrast material) was employed. Completion duplex exams were obtained in all cases.

RESULTS

The overall technical success was 97% (32/33 cases). In only one case, the outflow stenotic lesion in the plantar artery could not be traversed with the guidewire due to extreme tortuosity. Overall local complications rate was 6% (two cases). One vein bypass pseudoaneurysm caused by rupture with a cutting balloon was repaired by patch angioplasty and one SFA pseudoaneurysm at the puncture site required open repair. Overall 30-day survival rate was 100%. Overall 6-month limb salvage and primary patency rates were 100 and 69%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Duplex guided endovascular therapy is an effective modality for the treatment of failing infrainguinal arterial bypasses.

Phosphine dissociation and diffusion on Si(001) observed at the atomic scale

A detailed atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory study of the adsorption, dissociation, and surface diffusion of phosphine (PH(3)) on Si(001) is presented. Adsorbate coverages from approximately 0.01 monolayer to saturation are investigated, and adsorption is performed at room temperature and 120 K. It is shown that PH(3) dissociates upon adsorption to Si(001) at room temperature to produce both PH(2) + H and PH + 2H. These appear in atomic-resolution STM images as features asymmetric-about and centered-upon the dimer rows, respectively. The ratio of PH(2) to PH is a function of both dose rate and temperature, and the dissociation of PH(2) to PH occurs on a time scale of minutes at room temperature. Time-resolved in situ STM observations of these adsorbates show the surface diffusion of PH(2) adsorbates (mediated by its lone pair electrons) and the dissociation of PH(2) to PH. The surface diffusion of PH(2) results in the formation of hemihydride dimers on low-dosed Si(001) surfaces and the ordering of PH molecules along dimer rows at saturation coverages. The observations presented here have important implications for the fabrication of atomic-scale P dopant structures in Si, and the methodology is applicable to other emerging areas of nanotechnology, such as molecular electronics, where unambiguous molecular identification using STM is necessary.

Phosphine dissociation on the Si(001) surface

Density functional calculations are performed to identify features observed in STM experiments after phosphine (PH3) dosing of the Si(001) surface. On the basis of a comprehensive survey of possible structures, energetics, and simulated STM images, three prominent STM features are assigned to structures containing surface bound PH2, PH, and P, respectively. Collectively, the assigned features outline for the first time a detailed mechanism of PH3 dissociation and P incorporation on Si(001).
