Suppressed terahertz dynamics of water confined in nanometer gaps

Nanoconfined waters exhibit low static permittivity mainly due to interfacial effects that span about one nanometer. The characteristic length scale may be much longer in the terahertz (THz) regime where long-range collective dynamics occur; however, the THz dynamics have been largely unexplored because of the lack of a robust platform. Here, we use metallic loop nanogaps to sharply enhance light-matter interactions and precisely measure real and imaginary THz refractive indices of nanoconfined water at gap widths ranging from 2 to 20 nanometers, spanning mostly interfacial waters all the way to quasi-bulk waters. We find that, in addition to the well-known interfacial effect, the confinement effect also contributes substantially to the decrease in the complex refractive indices of the nanoconfined water by cutting off low-energy vibrational modes, even at gap widths as large as 10 nanometers. Our findings provide valuable insights into the collective dynamics of water molecules which is crucial to understanding water-mediated processes.

Observation of Seven Astrophysical Tau Neutrino Candidates with IceCube

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate ν_{τ} events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent ν_{τ} energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from π^{±}/K^{±} decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-ν_{τ} astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical ν_{τ} at the 5σ level. The measured astrophysical ν_{τ} flux is consistent with expectations based on previously published IceCube astrophysical neutrino flux measurements and neutrino oscillations.

Optoelectronic Manifestation of Orbital Angular Momentum Driven by Chiral Hopping in Helical Se Chains

Chiral materials have garnered significant attention in the field of condensed matter physics. Nevertheless, the magnetic moment induced by the chiral spatial motion of electrons in helical materials, such as elemental Te and Se, remains inadequately understood. In this work, we investigate the development of quantum angular momentum enforced by chirality by using static and time-dependent density functional theory calculations for an elemental Se chain. Our findings reveal the emergence of an unconventional orbital texture driven by the chiral geometry, giving rise to a nonvanishing current-induced orbital moment. By incorporating spin-orbit coupling, we demonstrate that current-induced spin accumulation arises in the chiral chain, which fundamentally differs from the conventional Edelstein effect. Furthermore, we demonstrate optoelectronic detection of the orbital angular momentum in the chiral Se chain, providing an alternative to the interband Berry curvature, which is ill-defined in low dimensions.

Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5σ level of significance. The signal is consistent with diffuse emission of neutrinos from the Milky Way but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources.

Unusual Spin Polarization in the Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) refers to the fact that electrons get spin polarized after passing through chiral molecules in a nanoscale transport device or in photoemission experiments. In CISS, chiral molecules are commonly believed to be a spin filter through which one favored spin transmits and the opposite spin gets reflected; that is, transmitted and reflected electrons exhibit opposite spin polarization. In this work, we point out that such a spin filter scenario contradicts the principle that equilibrium spin current must vanish. Instead, we find that both transmitted and reflected electrons present the same type of spin polarization, which is actually ubiquitous for a two-terminal device. More accurately, chiral molecules play the role of a spin polarizer rather than a spin filter. The direction of spin polarization is determined by the molecule chirality and the electron incident direction. And the magnitude of spin polarization relies on local spin-orbit coupling in the device. Our work brings a deeper understanding on CISS and interprets recent experiments, for example, the CISS-driven anomalous Hall effect.

Evidence for neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068

A supermassive black hole, obscured by cosmic dust, powers the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. Neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter, could provide information on the galaxy’s active core. We searched for neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with the IceCube neutrino detector between 2011 and 2020. The positions of 110 known gamma-ray sources were individually searched for neutrino detections above atmospheric and cosmic backgrounds. We found that NGC 1068 has an excess of 79 − 20 + 22 neutrinos at tera–electron volt energies, with a global significance of 4.2σ, which we interpret as associated with the active galaxy. The flux of high-energy neutrinos that we measured from NGC 1068 is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit on emissions of tera–electron volt gamma rays from this source.

Search for Unstable Sterile Neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

We present a search for an unstable sterile neutrino by looking for a resonant signal in eight years of atmospheric ν_{μ} data collected from 2011 to 2019 at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Both the (stable) three-neutrino and the 3+1 sterile neutrino models are disfavored relative to the unstable sterile neutrino model, though with p values of 2.8% and 0.81%, respectively, we do not observe evidence for 3+1 neutrinos with neutrino decay. The best-fit parameters for the sterile neutrino with decay model from this study are Δm_{41}^{2}=6.7_{-2.5}^{+3.9}  eV^{2}, sin^{2}2θ_{24}=0.33_{-0.17}^{+0.20}, and g^{2}=2.5π±1.5π, where g is the decay-mediating coupling. The preferred regions of the 3+1+decay model from short-baseline oscillation searches are excluded at 90% C.L.

Strong Constraints on Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions from TeV-Scale ν_{μ} Disappearance at IceCube

We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter ε_{μτ}. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of -0.0041≤ε_{μτ}≤0.0031 along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Giant bulk photovoltaic effect driven by the wall-to-wall charge shift in WS2 nanotubes

The intrinsic light–matter characteristics of transition-metal dichalcogenides have not only been of great scientific interest but have also provided novel opportunities for the development of advanced optoelectronic devices. Among the family of transition-metal dichalcogenide structures, the one-dimensional nanotube is particularly attractive because it produces a spontaneous photocurrent that is prohibited in its higher-dimensional counterparts. Here, we show that WS₂ nanotubes exhibit a giant shift current near the infrared region, amounting to four times the previously reported values in the higher frequency range. The wall-to-wall charge shift constitutes a key advantage of the one-dimensional nanotube geometry, and we consider a Janus-type heteroatomic configuration that can maximize this interwall effect. To assess the nonlinear effect of a strong field and the nonadiabatic effect of atomic motion, we carried out direct real-time integration of the photoinduced current using time-dependent density functional theory. Our findings provide a solid basis for a complete quantum mechanical understanding of the unique light–matter interaction hidden in the geometric characteristics of the reduced dimension.

We demonstrate that double-wall or multi-wall WS₂ nanotubes can exhibit unexpectedly efficient bulk photovoltaic effect owing to its unique inter-wall charge-shifting excitations.

Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with Eight Years of IceCube Data

We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

Identification of the Mott Insulating Charge Density Wave State in 1T-TaS_{2}

We investigate the low-temperature charge density wave (CDW) state of bulk TaS_{2} with a fully self-consistent density-functional theory with the Hubbard U potential, over which the controversy has remained unresolved regarding the out-of-plane metallic band. By examining the innate structure of the Hubbard U potential, we reveal that the conventional use of atomic-orbital basis could seriously misevaluate the electron correlation in the CDW state. By adopting a generalized basis, covering the whole David star, we successfully reproduce the Mott insulating nature with the layer-by-layer antiferromagnetic order. Similar consideration should be applied for description of the electron correlation in molecular solid.

First-principles identification of the charge-shifting mechanism and ferroelectricity in hybrid halide perovskites

Hybrid halide perovskite solar cells have recently attracted substantial attention, mainly because of their high power conversion efficiency. Among diverse variants, (CH3NH3)PbI3 and HC(NH2)2PbI3 are particularly promising candidates because their bandgap well matches the energy range of visible light. Here, we demonstrate that the large nonlinear photocurrent in β-(CH3NH3)PbI3 and α-HC(NH2)2PbI3 is mostly determined by the intrinsic electronic band properties near the Fermi level, rooted in the inorganic backbone, whereas the ferroelectric polarization of the hybrid halide perovskite is largely dominated by the ionic contribution of the molecular cation. The spatial charge shift upon excitation is attributed to the charge transfer from iodine to lead atoms in the backbone, which is independent of the presence of the cationic molecules. Our findings can serve as a guiding principle for the design of future materials for halide-perovskite solar cells with further enhanced photovoltaic performance.

eV-Scale Sterile Neutrino Search Using Eight Years of Atmospheric Muon Neutrino Data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100  eV^{2}. The best-fit point is found to be at sin^{2}(2θ_{24})=0.10 and Δm_{41}^{2}=4.5  eV^{2}, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a p value of 8.0%.

Characteristics of the Diffuse Astrophysical Electron and Tau Neutrino Flux with Six Years of IceCube High Energy Cascade Data

We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of ϕ_{astro}=1.66_{-0.27}^{+0.25} at E_{0}=100  TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ∼100  TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ∼100  TeV remains a puzzle. In order to not violate the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background as measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, it suggests the existence of astrophysical neutrino sources characterized by dense environments which are opaque to gamma rays.

Facile Ferroelectric Phase Transition Driven by Si Doping in HfO2

The recently discovered ferroelectricity in thin-film orthorhombic HfO₂, which can be directly integrated into complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology, has become an important research target. However, the use of orthorhombic HfO₂ in practical devices has been limited by undesirable mixing with the monoclinic phase, which is nonpolar and thus degrades the ferroelectric properties. Here, we demonstrate that a Si dopant significantly stabilizes the ferroelectric phase because of its unique bonding characteristics, particularly its intrinsic tendency to form strong covalent bonds with O, thereby weakening the phase boundary to stabilize the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase over the nonpolar monoclinic phase, relatively. On the basis of our theoretical predictions, we conducted transmission electron microscopy measurements and confirmed that Si substitution doping indeed induced monoclinic structural components into the orthorhombic phase, which is a strong indication of the weakened phase boundary and subsequent facilitation of the ferroelectric transition. This work thus provides an atomic-scale picture for understanding the unique role of Si in promoting the ferroelectric phase and the dopant dependence on the wake-up effect in HfO₂, offering a substantial advancement toward integrating ferroelectrics into practical devices.

Ruthenium anchored on carbon nanotube electrocatalyst for hydrogen production with enhanced Faradaic efficiency

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts is crucial for the electrochemical production of pure and clean hydrogen. For practical applications, an economical and facile method of producing catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential. Here, we report ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles uniformly deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an efficient HER catalyst. The catalyst exhibits the small overpotentials of 13 and 17 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M aq. H2SO4 and 1.0 M aq. KOH, respectively, surpassing the commercial Pt/C (16 mV and 33 mV). Moreover, the catalyst has excellent stability in both media, showing almost "zeroloss" during cycling. In a real device, the catalyst produces 15.4% more hydrogen per power consumed, and shows a higher Faradaic efficiency (92.28%) than the benchmark Pt/C (85.97%). Density functional theory calculations suggest that Ru-C bonding is the most plausible active site for the HER.

One-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride conducting channel

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an insulating two-dimensional (2D) material with a large bandgap. Although known for its interfacing with other 2D materials and structural similarities to graphene, the potential use of hBN in 2D electronics is limited by its insulating nature. Here, we report atomically sharp twin boundaries at AA'/AB stacking boundaries in chemical vapor deposition-synthesized few-layer hBN. We find that the twin boundary is composed of a 6'6' configuration, showing conducting feature with a zero bandgap. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of the atomically sharp twin boundaries is suggested by an analogy with stacking combinations of AA'/AB based on the observations of extended Klein edges at the layer boundaries of AB-stacked hBN. The atomically sharp AA'/AB stacking boundary is promising as an ultimate 1D electron channel embedded in insulating pristine hBN. This study will provide insights into the fabrication of single-hBN electronic devices.

Exploitable Magnetic Anisotropy of the Two-Dimensional Magnet CrI3

Magnetic anisotropy often plays a central role in various static and dynamic properties of magnetic materials. In particular, for two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials, as inferred from the Mermin-Wagner theorem, it is an essential prerequisite for stabilizing ferromagnetic order. In this work, we carry out first-principles calculations for a CrI₃ monolayer and investigate how its magnetic anisotropy is interrelated to adjustable parameters governing the underlying electronic structure. We explore various routes for controlled manipulation of magnetic anisotropy: chemical adsorption, substitutional doping, optical excitation, and charge transfer through a heterostructure. In particular, the vertical stacking of CrI₃ and graphene is noteworthy in regard to controlling magnetic anisotropy: the spin anisotropy axis is switchable between the out-of-plane and in-plane directions, which is accompanied by a variation in the anisotropy energy of up to 500%. Our results show the possibility that dynamic control of the anisotropy of the 2D magnet CrI₃ may enable the development of an advanced spintronic device with enhanced energy efficiency and high operation speed.

Time-Integrated Neutrino Source Searches with 10 Years of IceCube Data

This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1  TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Screening of suitable cationic dopants for solar absorber material CZTS/Se: A first principles study

The earth abundant and non-toxic solar absorber material kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S/Se)4 has been studied to achieve high power conversion efficiency beyond various limitations, such as secondary phases, antisite defects, band gap adjustment and microstructure. To alleviate these hurdles, we employed screening based approach to find suitable cationic dopant that can promote the current density and the theoretical maximum upper limit of the energy conversion efficiency (P(%)) of CZTS/Se solar devices. For this task, the hybrid functional (Heyd, Scuseria and Ernzerhof, HSE06) were used to study the electronic and optical properties of cation (Al, Sb, Ga, Ba) doped CZTS/Se. Our in-depth investigation reveals that the Sb atom is suitable dopant of CZTS/CZTSe and also it has comparable bulk modulus as of pure material. The optical absorption coefficient of Sb doped CZTS/Se is considerably larger than the pure materials because of easy formation of visible range exciton due to the presence of defect state below the Fermi level, which leads to an increase in the current density and P(%). Our results demonstrate that the lower formation energy, preferable energy gap and excellent optical absorption of the Sb doped CZTS/Se make it potential component for relatively high efficient solar cells.

Prediction of ferroelectricity-driven Berry curvature enabling charge- and spin-controllable photocurrent in tin telluride monolayers

In symmetry-broken crystalline solids, pole structures of Berry curvature (BC) can emerge, and they have been utilized as a versatile tool for controlling transport properties. For example, the monopole component of the BC is induced by the time-reversal symmetry breaking, and the BC dipole arises from a lack of inversion symmetry, leading to the anomalous Hall and nonlinear Hall effects, respectively. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the ferroelectricity in a tin telluride monolayer produces a unique BC distribution, which offers charge- and spin-controllable photocurrents. Even with the sizable band gap, the ferroelectrically driven BC dipole is comparable to those of small-gap topological materials. By manipulating the photon handedness and the ferroelectric polarization, charge and spin circular photogalvanic currents are generated in a controllable manner. The ferroelectricity in group-IV monochalcogenide monolayers can be a useful tool to control the BC dipole and the nonlinear optoelectronic responses.

Scratch to sensitize: scratch-induced sensitivity enhancement in semiconductor thin-film sensors

Semiconductor gas sensors are advantageous in miniaturization and can be used in a wide range of applications, yet consume large power due to high operating temperature. Here we demonstrated the ability of nanoscale scratches produced with mechanical abrasion to enhance the chemical sensitivity of thin-film-type semiconductor sensors. Well-aligned arrays of scratches parallel to the electrical current direction between the source and drain electrodes were made, using typical polishing machines with diamond suspensions, on semiconductor thin films produced with various deposition methods such as atomic layer deposition (ALD), sputtering, and the sol-gel technique. Processing with sharp diamond microparticles left nano-grooves on the surface, together with changes in chemical composition. For all of the tested metal oxide thin films, the introduction of scratches yielded increased quantities of oxygen vacancies and metallic components. Scratched ZnO devices exhibited superior performance even at room temperature, as predicted by a computational simulation that showed increased binding energy of gas molecules on defects. The scratch technique shown in the present study may be used to produce dense arrays of nanometer-scale, chemically functionalized line patterns on substrates larger than a few tens of centimeters with minimum cost, which in turn may be used in a variety of applications including massive arrays of sensors displaying high sensitivity.

Spin-Split Band Hybridization in Graphene Proximitized with α-RuCl3 Nanosheets

Proximity effects induced in the two-dimensional Dirac material graphene potentially open access to novel and intriguing physical phenomena. Thus far, the coupling between graphene and ferromagnetic insulators has been experimentally established. However, only very little is known about graphene's interaction with antiferromagnetic insulators. Here, we report a low-temperature study of the electronic properties of high quality van der Waals heterostructures composed of a single graphene layer proximitized with α-RuCl₃. The latter is known to become antiferromagnetically ordered below 10 K. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the longitudinal resistance together with Hall resistance measurements provide clear evidence for a band realignment that is accompanied by a transfer of electrons originally occupying the graphene's spin degenerate Dirac cones into α-RuCl₃ band states with in-plane spin polarization. Left behind are holes in two separate Fermi pockets, only the dispersion of one of which is distorted near the Fermi energy due to spin selective hybridization with these spin polarized α-RuCl₃ band states. This interpretation is supported by our density functional theory calculations. An unexpected damping of the quantum oscillations as well as a zero-field resistance upturn close to the Néel temperature of α-RuCl₃ suggest the onset of additional spin scattering due to spin fluctuations in the α-RuCl₃.

Atomic-Level Customization of 4 in. Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Multilayer Alloys for Industrial Applications

Despite many encouraging properties of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a central challenge in the realm of industrial applications based on TMD materials is to connect the large-scale synthesis and reproducible production of highly crystalline TMD materials. Here, the primary aim is to resolve simultaneously the two inversely related issues through the synthesis of MoS_{2(1- x )} Se_{2 x} ternary alloys with customizable bichalcogen atomic (S and Se) ratio via atomic-level substitution combined with a solution-based large-area compatible approach. The relative concentration of bichalcogen atoms in the 2D alloy can be effectively modulated by altering the selenization temperature, resulting in 4 in. scale production of MoS_1.62 Se_0.38 , MoS_1.37 Se_0.63 , MoS_1.15 Se_0.85 , and MoS_0.46 Se_1.54 alloys, as well as MoS₂ and MoSe₂ . Comprehensive spectroscopic evaluations for vertical and lateral homogeneity in terms of heteroatom distribution in the large-scale 2D TMD alloys are implemented. Se-stimulated strain effects and a detailed mechanism for the Se substitution in the MoS₂ crystal are further explored. Finally, the capability of the 2D alloy for industrial application in nanophotonic devices and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is validated. Substantial enhancements in the optoelectronic and HER performances of the 2D ternary alloy compared with those of its binary counterparts, including pure-phase MoS₂ and MoSe₂ , are unambiguously achieved.

Abstract P4-06-23: Feasibility of sygeneic mice models of breast cancer for research of immune checkpoint blockades

Background: With the increasing success of immune checkpoint blockades for cancer treatment, we increasingly need well-characterized preclinical models. Syngeneic mice models (with a fully competent immune system) have advantages that they are easily established and cost less, though they do not reflect genetic complexity of human tumors. We evaluated feasibility of syngeneic mice models of breast cancer by analyzing efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade and dynamic change of tumor immune microenvironment.

Methods: We used syngeneic mice model of JC, 4T1, and EMT6 cells, which are all murine triple negative breast cancer in BALB/c mice. At the time when subcutaneous tumors reach at 50˜100mm^3, each mice models were divided into 2 groups for treatment versus no-treatment control. In the treatment group, mice version of anti-PD-1 antibody was intraperitoneally injected (q 3 days, x 6). Anti-tumor efficacy was monitored by measuring tumor volume. 'Tumor response' was defined as a case with tumor volume less than that of control group by a standard error at a determined time point. Immune microenvironment was evaluated by measuring serum cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, IFNγ, and TNFα) with legendplex and immune cells (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD56, and FOXP3) of peripheral blood with FACS before injection of PD-1 blockade, after 1st injection, and when euthanized. Tumor-infiltrating immune cells were evaluated with FACS, when euthanized.

Results: The tumor response rate to PD-1 blockade was highest in the 4T1 model (54.5%, 6/11) compared to JC model (40%, 4/10) or EMT6 model (36.4%, 4/11). Bleeding 3 times and tumor obtainment when euthanized in each mouse were feasible for profiling of cytokines and immune cells. Although before treatment with PD-1 blockade, CD3+T cells in peripheral blood were slightly lower in 4T1 model (18.3±8.1%) than JC model (24.6±4.7%) or EMT6 model (27.9±6.3%), after injection of one dose of PD-1 blockade, CD3+T cells increased 1.5 times in 4T1 model (18.3% to 27.3%), whereas those CD3+T cells decreased slightly in JC model and EMT6 model. Dynamic changes were not observed in other subsets of peripheral immune cells in all 3 models. Serum TNFα (with statistical significance) and IFNγ (with borderline significance) were higher in responders than in non-responders or no-treatment control.

Conclusions: Syngeneic mice models of breast cancer were feasible to investigate immune checkpoint blockades and monitor dynamic change of immune microenvironment. In this regard, such models may be used to evaluate immune checkpoint blockade-based combination therapy as well.

Anomalous K-Point Phonons in Noble Metal/Graphene Heterostructure Activated by Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance

The metal/graphene interface has been one of the most important research topics with regard to charge screening, charge transfer, contact resistance, and solar cells. Chemical bond formation of metal and graphene can be deduced from the defect induced D-band and its second-order mode, 2D band, measured by Raman spectroscopy, as a simple and nondestructive method. However, a phonon mode located at ∼1350 cm^-1, which is normally known as the defect-induced D-band, is intriguing for graphene deposited with noble metals (Ag, Au, and Cu). We observe anomalous K-point phonons in nonreactive noble metal/graphene heterostructures. The intensity ratio of the midfrequency mode at ∼1350 cm^-1 over G-band (∼1590 cm^-1) exhibits nonlinear but resonant behavior with the excitation laser wavelength, and more importantly, the phonon frequency-laser energy dispersion is ∼10-17 cm^-1 eV^-1, which is much less than the conventional range. These phonon modes of graphene at nonzero phonon wave vector (q ≠ 0) around K points are activated by localized surface plasmon resonance and not by the defects due to chemical bond formation of metal/graphene. This hypothesis is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations for noble metals and Cr along with the measured contact resistances.
