Light-Controlled Multiconfigurational Conductance Switching in a Single 1D Metal-Organic Wire

Precise control of multiple spin states on the atomic scale presents a promising avenue for designing and realizing magnetic switches. Despite substantial progress in recent decades, the challenge of achieving control over multiconfigurational reversible switches in low-dimensional nanostructures persists. Our work demonstrates multiple, fully reversible plasmon-driven spin-crossover switches in a single π-d metal-organic chain suspended between two electrodes. The plasmonic nanocavity stimulated by external visible light allows for reversible spin crossover between low- and high-spin states of different cobalt centers within the chain. We show that the distinct spin configurations remain stable for minutes under cryogenic conditions and can be nonperturbatively detected by conductance measurements. This multiconfigurational plasmon-driven spin-crossover demonstration extends the available toolset for designing optoelectrical molecular devices based on SCO compounds.

Two-step access to bis-meso-perfluoroalkyl-corroles towards meso-perfluoroacyl-ABC-corroles

A solventless and acid-catalyzed condensation of meso-perfluoroalkyl-dipyrromethanes with selected benzaldehydes was used to prepare ten different bilanes that were isolated before their oxidation into trans-A2B-corroles bearing two meso-perfluoroalkyl groups. Macrocycles bearing long chains (C3F7 or C7F15) are key precursors to afford ABC-corroles having a meso-acyl substituent when subjected to a mild and basic hydrolysis affecting one of the alkyl substituents.

Insights into extended coupled polymethines through the investigation of dual UV-to-NIR acidochromic switches based on heptamethine-oxonol dyes

A series of heptamethine-oxonol dyes featuring different heterocyclic end groups were designed with the aim to explore structure-property relationships in π-extended coupled polymethines. These dyes can be stabilised under three different protonation states, affording dicationic derivatives with an aromatic core, cationic heptamethines, and zwitterionic bis-cyanine forms. The variation of the end groups directly impacts the absorption and emission properties and mostly controls reaching either a colourless neutral dispirocyclic species or near-infrared zwitterions. The acidochromic switching between the three states involves profound electronic rearrangements leading to notable shifts of their optical properties that were investigated using a parallel experiment-theory approach, providing a comprehensive description of these unique systems.

Breaking Azacalix[4]arenes into Induline Derivatives

Tetraamino-tetranitro-azacalixarene 5 is at the crossroad of two different families of compounds depending on the conditions and the agent used to reduce the NO2 groups: (1) azacalixphyrin 7 in neutral medium, or (2) phenazinium of type 8 in acidic medium. The key role of the N-substituted amino functions at the periphery is highlighted by investigating octaaminoazacalixarene as a model compound, and by using the corresponding tetrahydroxy-tetranitro-azacalixarene 15 as a precursor, which behaves differently.

Controlled oligomeric guest stacking by cucurbiturils in water

Previously, we reported a guest molecule containing a viologen (V), a phenylene (P) and an imidazole (I) fragment (VPI) forming a host : guest 2 : 2 complex with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and an unprecedented 2 : 3 complex with cucurbit[10]uril (CB[10]). To better address the structural features required to form these complexes, two VPI analogues were designed and synthesized: the first with a tolyl (T) group grafted on the V part (T-VPI) and the second with a naphthalene (N) fused on the imidazole (I) part (VPI-N). While VPI-N afforded a discrete well-defined 2 : 2 complex with CB[8] and a 2 : 3 complex with CB[10], T-VPI organized also as a 2 : 2 complex with CB[8] but no well-defined complex was obtained with CB[10]. These complexes were studied by NMR spectroscopy, notably DOSY, which allowed us to estimate binding constants for 2 : 2 complex formation with CB[8], pointing to more stable 2 : 2 complexes with more hydrophobic guests. UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed complex formation, suggesting host-stabilized charge-transfer interactions. Therefore, the simple addition of CB[8] or CB[10] enabled us to control the level of guest stacking (dimer or trimer) using relevant pairs of synthetic hosts through spontaneous host : guest quaternary or quinary self-assembly.

Tris-benzo[cd]indole Cyanine Enables the NIR-photosensitized Radical and Thiol-ene Polymerizations at 940 nm

A near-infrared-absorbing heptamethine (HM+ ) incorporating three bulky benzo[cd]indole heterocycles was designed to efficiently prevent self-aggregation of the dye, which results in a strong enhancement of its photoinitiating reactivity as compared to a parent bis-benzo[cd]indole heptamethine (HMCl+ ) used as a reference system. In this context, we highlight an efficient free-radical NIR-polymerization up to a 100 % acrylates C=C bonds conversion even under air conditions. Such an important initiating performance was obtained by incorporating our NIR-sensitizer into a three-component system leading to its self-regeneration. This original photoredox cycle was thoroughly investigated through the identification of each intermediary species using EPR spectroscopy.

Enzyme-immobilized hierarchically porous covalent organic framework biocomposite for catalytic degradation of broad-range emerging pollutants in water

Efficient enzyme immobilization is crucial for the successful commercialization of large-scale enzymatic water treatment. However, issues such as lack of high enzyme loading coupled with enzyme leaching present challenges for the widespread adoption of immobilized enzyme systems. The present study describes the development and bioremediation application of an enzyme biocomposite employing a cationic macrocycle-based covalent organic framework (COF) with hierarchical porosity for the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The intrinsic hierarchical porous features of the azacalix[4]arene-based COF (ACA-COF) allowed for a maximum HRP loading capacity of 0.76 mg/mg COF with low enzyme leaching (<5.0 %). The biocomposite, HRP@ACA-COF, exhibited exceptional thermal stability (∼200 % higher relative activity than the free enzyme), and maintained ∼60 % enzyme activity after five cycles. LCMSMS analyses confirmed that the HRP@ACA-COF system was able to achieve > 99 % degradation of seven diverse types of emerging pollutants (2-mercaptobenzothiazole, paracetamol, caffeic acid, methylparaben, furosemide, sulfamethoxazole, and salicylic acid)in under an hour. The described enzyme-COF system offers promise for efficient wastewater bioremediation applications.

A Strategy to Design Substituted Tetraamino-Phenazine Dyes and Access to an NIR-Absorbing Benzoquinonediimine-Fused Quinoxaline

The straightforward access to N- or C-substituted dinitro-tetraamino-phenazines (P1-P5) is enabled in oxidative conditions via formation of two intermolecular C-N bonds from accessible 5-nitrobenzene-1,2,4-triamine precursors. The photophysical studies revealed green absorbing and orange-red emitting dyes, with enhanced fluorescence in the solid state. Further reduction of the nitro functions led to the isolation of a benzoquinonediimine-fused quinoxaline (P6), which undergoes diprotonation to form a dicationic coupled trimethine dye absorbing beyond 800 nm.

A pH- and Metal-Actuated Molecular Shuttle in Water

The structure of the Viologen-Phenylene-Imidazole (VPI) guest, previously shown to be bound by cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) with binding modes depending on pH and silver ions, has been extended by adding hydrophobic groups on the two extremities of VPI before investigations of CB[7] binding by NMR, ITC, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. With an imidazole station extended by a naphthalene group (VPI-N), binding modes of CB[7] are similar to those previously observed. However, with the viologen extended by a tolyl group (T-VPI), CB[7] preferentially sits on station T, shuttling between the T and P stations at acid pH or after Ag+ addition. The CB[7]•T-VPI complex thus behaves as a metal-actuated thermodynamic stop-and-go molecular shuttle featured by fast and autonomous ring translocation between two stations and a continuum for fractional station occupancy solely and easily controlled by Ag+ concentration.

Electrical monitoring of organic crystal phase transition using MoS2 field effect transistor

Hybrid van der Waals heterostructures made of 2D materials and organic molecules exploit the high sensitivity of 2D materials to all interfacial modifications and the inherent versatility of the organic compounds. In this study, we are interested in the quinoidal zwitterion/MoS₂ hybrid system in which organic crystals are grown by epitaxy on the MoS₂ surface and reorganize in another polymorph after thermal annealing. By means of field-effect transistor measurements recorded in situ all along the process, atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations we demonstrate that the charge transfer between quinoidal zwitterions and MoS₂ strongly depends on the conformation of the molecular film. Remarkably, both the field effect mobility and the current modulation depth of the transistors remain unchanged which opens up promising prospects for efficient devices based on this hybrid system. We also show that MoS₂ transistors enable fast and accurate detection of structural modifications that occur during phases transitions of the organic layer. This work highlights that MoS₂ transistors are remarkable tools for on-chip detection of molecular events occurring at the nanoscale, which paves the way for the investigation of other dynamical systems.

Covalent Organic Framework Based on Azacalix[4]arene for the Efficient Capture of Dialysis Waste Products

Azacalix[n]arenes (ACAs) are lesser-known cousins of calix[n]arenes that contain amine bridges instead of methylene bridges, so they generally have higher flexibility due to enlarged cavities. Herein, we report a highly substituted cationic azacalix[4]arene-based covalent organic framework (ACA-COF) synthesized by the Zincke reaction under microwave irradiation. The current work is a rare example of a synthetic strategy that utilizes the chemical functionalization of an organic macrocycle to constrain its conformational flexibility and, thereby, produce an ordered material. Considering the ACA cavity dimensions, and the density and diversity of the polar groups in ACA-COF, we used it for adsorption of uric acid and creatinine, two major waste products generated during hemodialysis treatment in patients with renal failure. This type of application, which has the potential to save ∼400 L of water per patient per week, has only been recognized in the last decade, but could effectively address the problem of water scarcity in arid areas of the world. Rapid adsorption rates (up to k = 2191 g mg^-1 min^-1) were observed in our COF, exceeding reported values by several orders of magnitude.

A one-dimensional high-order commensurate phase of tilted molecules

We report on the formation of a high-order commensurate (HOC) structure of 5,14-dihydro-5,7,12,14-tetraazapentacene (DHTAP) molecules on the highly corrugated Cu(110)–(2 × 1)O surface. Scanning tunnelling microscopy shows that the DHTAP molecules form a periodic uniaxial arrangement in which groups of seven molecules are distributed over exactly nine substrate lattice spacings along the [1̄10] direction. DFT-calculations reveal that this peculiar arrangement is associated with different tilting of the seven DHTAP molecules within the quasi one-dimensional HOC unit cell. The orientational degree of freedom thus adds a new parameter, which can efficiently stabilize complex molecular structures on corrugated surfaces.

We report on the formation of a quasi-1D high-order commensurate (HOC) structure of dihydro-tetraazapentacene (DHTAP) molecules on a Cu(110)–(2 × 1)O surface and its stabilization through internal degrees of freedoms, namely the molecular tilt.

Reversible pH-Controlled Catenation of a Benzobisimidazole-Based Tetranuclear Rectangle

The development of methodologies to control on demand and reversibly supramolecular transformations from self-assembled metalla-structures requires the rational design of architectures able to answer to an applied stimulus. While solvent or concentration changes, light exposure or addition of a chemical have been largely explored to provide these transformations, the case of pH sensitive materials is less described. Herein, we report the first example of a pH-triggered dissociation of a coordination-driven self-assembled interlocked molecular link. It incorporates a pH sensitive benzobisimidazole-based ligand that can be selectively protonated on its bisimidazole moieties. This generates intermolecular electrostatic repulsions that reduces drastically the stability of the interlocked structure, leading to its dissociation without any sign of protonation of the pyridine moieties involved in the coordination bonds. Importantly, the dissociation process is reversible through addition of a base.

On-surface chemistry using local high electric fields

Dihydrotetraazapentacene (DHTAP) molecules can be dehydrogenated on the surface to form tetraazapentacene (TAP), by applying a high electric field between the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) and a metallic substrate in the zero-current limit. The method can be applied either to single molecules or more extended layers by successively scanning a selected area using an STM tip.

Azacalixphyrins as an innovative alternative for the free-radical photopolymerization under visible and NIR irradiation without the need of co-initiators

Azacalixphyrins are unique aromatic macrocycles featuring strong absorption from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) spectral ranges. This work demonstrates through EPR spin-trapping experiments that the N-alkyl tetrasubstituted azacalixphyrin (ACP) can lead to the formation of carbon-centered radicals initiating for the free-radical photopolymerization (FRP) of bio-based acrylate monomer upon the irradiation of several light emitting diodes, which emissions range from 455 to 660 nm. Compared to other previously reported systems, the tremendous advantage of the ACP photoinitiating system is its ability to promote photopolymerization on its own, avoiding the introduction of co-initiators. A new potential application of this promising photoinitiator is highlighted through the fabrication of well-defined microstructures under NIR laser diode irradiation at λ = 800 nm.

Modified Indulines: From Dyestuffs to In Vivo Theranostic Agents

The efficient, versatile, and straightforward synthesis of the first N-alkyl analogues of induline 3B (8a and 8b) is reported. Thanks to the introduction of lipophilic substituents and their attractive photophysical properties (far-red emission and production of singlet oxygen), phenazinium 8b can be used as a theranostic agent and shows, at very low concentrations (100 nM), a remarkable ability to (i) image cells and zebrafish embryos with high quality under both mono- (514 nm) and biphotonic (790 and 810 nm) excitations, (ii) efficiently and quickly penetrate cancer cells rather than healthy fibroblasts, and (iii) induce a total or almost total cancer cell death in vitro and in vivo after illumination (λ_exc = 540-560 nm). The molecular structure of 8b is based on a triamino-phenazinium core only, with no need for additional components, highlighting the emergence of a minimalistic and versatile class of fluorescent probes for targeted photodynamic cancer therapy.

Significance Of Nuclear Quantum Effects In Hydrogen Bonded Molecular Chains

In hydrogen-bonded systems, nuclear quantum effects such as zero-point motion and tunneling can significantly affect their material properties through underlying physical and chemical processes. Presently, direct observation of the influence of nuclear quantum effects on the strength of hydrogen bonds with resulting structural and electronic implications remains elusive, leaving opportunities for deeper understanding to harness their fascinating properties. We studied hydrogen-bonded one-dimensional quinonediimine molecular networks which may adopt two isomeric electronic configurations via proton transfer. Herein, we demonstrate that concerted proton transfer promotes a delocalization of π-electrons along the molecular chain, which enhances the cohesive energy between molecular units, increasing the mechanical stability of the chain and giving rise to distinctive electronic in-gap states localized at the ends. These findings demonstrate the identification of a class of isomeric hydrogen-bonded molecular systems where nuclear quantum effects play a dominant role in establishing their chemical and physical properties. This identification is a step toward the control of mechanical and electronic properties of low-dimensional molecular materials via concerted proton tunneling.

Stabilization of a 12-π electrons diamino-benzoquinonediimine tautomer

We explore tautomerism and its consequences in the first example of diamino-benzoquinonediimine bearing both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the same 6-π electron subunit.

Small Panchromatic and NIR Absorbers from Quinoid Zwitterions

The transamination of oxoaminobenzoquinonemonoimine (BQI derivatives), an unconventional zwitterionic quinone, allows isolation of a series of compounds featuring electron-donating aryl auxochromes. The substitution has a very strong impact on the electrochemical and optical features, which is rationalized by theoretical calculations. Protonation and alkylation of the BQIs toward the corresponding cations lead to surprising red-shifts of the absorption, especially in the instance of the most electron-rich dyes that exhibit panchromatic absorption spanning up to the near-infrared (NIR) region, a remarkable achievement for such small molecules.

Electrical molecular switch addressed by chemical stimuli

We demonstrate that the conductance switching of benzo-bis(imidazole) molecules upon protonation depends on the lateral functional groups. The protonated H-substituted molecule shows a higher conductance than the neutral one (Gpro > Gneu), while the opposite (Gneu > Gpro) is observed for a molecule laterally functionalized by amino-phenyl groups. These results are demonstrated at various scale lengths: self-assembled monolayers, tiny nanodot-molecule junctions and single molecules. From ab initio theoretical calculations, we conclude that for the H-substituted molecule, the result Gpro > Gneu is correctly explained by a reduction of the LUMO-HOMO gap, while for the amino-phenyl functionnalized molecule, the result Gneu > Gpro is consistent with a shift of the HOMO, which reduces the density of states at the Fermi energy.

MixedN-aryl/alkyl substitution favours an unusual tautomer of near-infrared absorbing azacalixphyrins

This work depicts the synthesis of a new azacalixphyrin presenting both aryl and alkyl substituents. The joint experimental and theoretical study supports that the substitution pattern favour an unusual 5–7 tautomer.

1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-1,4,5,8-tetraazaanthracene revisited: properties and structural evidence of aromaticity loss

The synthesis and properties of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,4,5,8-tetraazaanthracene (THTAA) – a heterocycle involving both >N–H donating and =N– accepting moieties – have been reinvestigated. Unlike previously reported, THTAA is a thermally stable compound that can be re-sublimed at 300–310 °C without decomposition. Controlled introduction of substituents at the nitrogen atoms of THTAA led to variation of its electron donor/acceptor capability that allowed fine-tuning the absorption properties. The propensity of these compounds and a number of its derivatives to form infinite chains involving >N–H···N= and >N–H···Hal⁻···N⁺ atoms is demonstrated by X-ray structure analysis. The DFT level optimized and experimental geometry of THTAA and its derivatives show considerable loss of aromaticity within the quinoxaline moiety.

First principles investigation of the spectral properties of neutral, zwitterionic, and bis-cationic azaacenes

An in-depth investigation of the optical properties of recently-synthesized linear azaacene derivatives of various electronic nature (neutral, dicationic, and zwitterionic) is presented.

Azacalixphyrins as NIR photoacoustic contrast agents

Near-infrared (NIR) azacalixphyrins bearing aryl substituents strongly impacting the physico-chemical properties of the macrocycles were designed, enabling hyperchromic and bathochromic shifts of the absorption compared to their N-alkylated analogues. This engineering enhances the photoacoustic response under NIR excitation, making azacalixphyrins promising organic contrast agents that reach the 800-1000 nm range.

Synthesis and Combined Experimental and Theoretical Characterization of Dihydro-tetraaza-acenes

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of electronic and optical properties of dihydro-tetraaza-acenes (DHTAn). Using solvent-free condensation, we are able to synthesize not only DHTA5 but also the longer DHTA6 and DHTA7 molecules. We then investigate their gas-phase electronic structures by means of ab initio density functional calculations employing an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional. By comparing with the parent linear oligoacenes (nA) and based on computed ionization potentials and electron affinities, we predict DHTAn molecules to be more stable than acenes of the same length, where we expect DHTAn molecules to be persistent at least up to n = 7 rings. We further exploit the analogy with nA by analyzing the entire intramolecular π-band structure of the DHTAn molecules. This clearly reveals that the additional two electrons donated by the dihydropyrazine group are delocalized over the entire molecule and contribute to its π-electron system. As a consequence, the symmetry of the frontier orbitals of DHTAn differs from that of the parent nA molecule. This also affects the UV-vis absorption spectra which have been measured for DHTA5, 6, and 7 dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and analyzed by means of excited state calculations within a time-dependent density functional theory framework.

Central substitution of azacalixphyrins: a strategy towards acidochromic NIR dyes

Regioselective addition of DDQ on a quinoid ring: an entry into chiral zwitterionic bridging ligands

The Michael-type addition of DDQ on a zwitterionic ligand is described together with the chiral separation and full characterization of the two enantiomers of one derivative. These adducts offer a novel entry into chiral zwitterionic quinoidal ligands.

On the structures, spin states, and optical properties of titanium, platinum, and iron azacalixphyrins: a DFT study

Azacalixphyrins (ACP) constitute a new class of macrocycles isoelectronic and isostructural to porphyrins. Herein, we report the first theoretical investigation of the properties of the ACP macrocycles metallated at their centre by titanium, platinum, and iron ions. We considered both the original phenyl-type ACP and new pyridyl-type forms. Our results indicate that the metallation greatly impacts the global structure of the macrocycle through pseudo Jahn-Teller effects, giving rise to a possible conformational transition between D_2d and S₄ structures. Such an effect could not be found in the metal-free ACPs. In addition, we find that, in contrast to the purely singlet platinum ACPs, and the purely triplet iron ACPs, several spin states are energetically close in the titanium ACPs, especially when weak field ligands are bound in axial positions to the metallic centre. According to TD-DFT calculations, metallation also tunes the optical properties. In particular, the absorption band in the near infrared region undergoes a hypsochromic shift of ca. 100-200 nm when going from the D_2d to the S₄ structures. We quantify how the addition of electroactive ligands in the axial position can increase or tune down these spectral changes. This contribution therefore supports the development of ACP coordination complexes.

Straightforward metal-free synthesis of an azacalix[6]arene forming a host–guest complex with fullerene C60

The straightforward metal-free synthesis of an azacalix[6]arene from simple aryl units is described together with its full characterization. This macrocycle features a rare 1,2,4,5-alternate conformation and is able to form a 1 : 1 stable host–guest complex with C₆₀.

Di- vs. tetra-substituted quinonediimines: a drastic effect on coordination chemistry

N,N′-Di-substituted benzoquinonediimine ligands behave differently in coordination chemistry compared to the well-known N,N′,N′′,N′′′-tetra-substituted analogues.

N-Substituted Azacalixphyrins: Synthesis, Properties, and Self-Assembly

Pre- and postintroduction of substituents with respect to the macrocyclization step leads to previously unknown N-substituted azacalixphyrins. The stepwise synthetic approach has been studied in detail to highlight the key role of the N-substituents of the precursors and/or intermediates in terms of reactivity. Based on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation, the relationship between the properties of the macrocycles and their degree of substitution is rationalized. Depending on the nature of the N-substituents, the formation of supramolecular ribbon-like structures could also be observed, as demonstrated by combined TEM, SEM, AFM, and FTIR experiments.

Highly ordered molecular films on Au(111): the N-heteroacene approach

This study presents an innovative synthesis of dihydrotetraazapentacene (DHTAP) and the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigation of the initial stages of its growth on Au(111). We were able to demonstrate that, up to the fourth monolayer, the DHTAP films show a high structural order and growths in perfect epitaxy. This behavior can be unequivocally attributed to the stabilizing effect of intralayer hydrogen bonding interactions.
