Multiple neighboring active sites of an atomically precise copper nanocluster catalyst for efficient bond-forming reactions

Atomically precise copper nanoclusters (NCs) are an emerging class of nanomaterials for catalysis. Their versatile core-shell architecture opens the possibility of tailoring their catalytically active sites. Here, we introduce a core-shell copper nanocluster (CuNC), [Cu29(StBu)13Cl5(PPh3)4H10]tBuSO3 (StBu: tert-butylthiol; PPh3: triphenylphosphine), Cu29NC, with multiple accessible active sites on its shell. We show that this nanocluster is a versatile catalyst for C-heteroatom bond formation (C-O, C-N, and C-S) with several advantages over previous Cu systems. When supported, the cluster can also be reused as a heterogeneous catalyst without losing its efficiency, making it a hybrid homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst. We elucidated the atomic-level mechanism of the catalysis using density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on the single crystal structure. We found that the cooperative action of multiple neighboring active sites is essential for the catalyst's efficiency. The calculations also revealed that oxidative addition is the rate-limiting step that is facilitated by the neighboring active sites of the Cu29NC, which highlights a unique advantage of nanoclusters over traditional copper catalysts. Our results demonstrate the potential of nanoclusters for enabling the rational atomically precise design and investigation of multi-site catalysts.

Capillary Manganese Halide Needle-Like Array Scintillator with Isolated Light Crosstalk for Micro-X-Ray Imaging

The exacerbation of inherent light scattering with increasing scintillator thickness poses a major challenge for balancing the thickness-dependent spatial resolution and scintillation brightness in X-ray imaging scintillators. Herein, a thick pixelated needle-like array scintillator capable of micrometer resolution is fabricated via waveguide structure engineering. Specifically, this involves integrating a straightforward low-temperature melting process of manganese halide with an aluminum-clad capillary template. In this waveguide structure, the oriented scintillation photons propagate along the well-aligned scintillator and are confined within individual pixels by the aluminum reflective cladding, as substantiated from the comprehensive analysis including laser diffraction experiments. Consequently, thanks to isolated light-crosstalk channels and robust light output due to increased thickness, ultrahigh spatial resolutions of 60.8 and 51.7 lp mm-1 at a modulation transfer function (MTF) of 0.2 are achieved on 0.5 mm and even 1 mm thick scintillators, respectively, which both exceed the pore diameter of the capillary arrays' template (Φ = 10 µm). As far as it is known, these micrometer resolutions are among the highest reported metal halide scintillators and are never demonstrated on such thick scintillators. Here an avenue is presented to the demand for thick scintillators in high-resolution X-ray imaging across diverse scientific and practical fields.

One-Pot Colloidal Synthesis Enables Highly Tunable InSb Short-Wave Infrared Quantum Dots Exhibiting Carrier Multiplication

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are emerging materials for short-wave infrared (SWIR, ≈1100-3000 nm) photodetectors, which are technologically important for a broad array of applications. Unfortunately, the most developed SWIR CQD systems are Pb and Hg chalcogenides; their toxicity and regulated compositions limit their applications. InSb CQD system is a potential environmentally friendly alternative, whose bandgap in theory, is tunable via quantum confinement across the SWIR spectrum. However, InSb CQDs are difficult to exploit, due to their complex syntheses and uncommon reactive precursors, which greatly hinder their application and study. Here, a one-pot synthesis strategy is reported using commercially available precursors to synthesize-under standard colloidal synthesis conditions-high-quality, size-tunable InSb CQDs. With this strategy, the large Bohr exciton radius of InSb can be exploited for tuning the bandgap of the CQDs over a wide range of wavelengths (≈1250-1860 nm) across the SWIR region. Furthermore, by changing the surface ligands of the CQDs from oleic acid (OA) to 1-dodecanthiol (DDT), a ≈20-fold lengthening in the excited-state lifetime, efficient carrier multiplication, and slower carrier annihilation are observed. The work opens a wide range of SWIR applications to a promising class of Pb- and Hg-free CQDs.

Ultrafast Coherent Hole Injection at the Interface between CuSCN and Polymer PM6 Using Femtosecond Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy

Tracking the dynamics of ultrafast hole injection into copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) at the interface can be experimentally challenging. These challenges include restrictions in accessing the ultraviolet spectral range through transient electronic spectroscopy, where the absorption spectrum of CuSCN is located. Time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy solves this problem by tracking marker modes at specific frequencies and allowing direct access to dynamical information at the molecular level at donor-acceptor interfaces in real time. This study uses photoabsorber PM6 (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl-3-fluoro)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))]) as a model system to explore and decipher the hole transfer dynamics of CuSCN using femtosecond (fs) mid-infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The time-resolved results indicate that excited PM6 exhibits a sharp vibrational mode at 1599 cm-1 attributed to the carbonyl group, matching the predicted frequency position obtained from time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The fs mid-IR spectroscopy demonstrates a fast formation (<168 fs) and blue spectral shift of the CN stretching vibration from 2118 cm-1 for CuSCN alone to 2180 cm-1 for PM6/CuSCN, confirming the hole transfer from PM6 to CuSCN. The short interfacial distance and high frontier orbital delocalization obtained from the interfacial DFT models support a coherent and ultrafast regime for hole transfer. These results provide direct evidence for hole injection at the interface of CuSCN for the first time using femtosecond mid-IR spectroscopy and serve as a new investigative approach for interfacial chemistry and solar cell communities.

Engineering colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals for quantum information processing

Quantum information processing-which relies on spin defects or single-photon emission-has shown quantum advantage in proof-of-principle experiments including microscopic imaging of electromagnetic fields, strain and temperature in applications ranging from battery research to neuroscience. However, critical gaps remain on the path to wider applications, including a need for improved functionalization, deterministic placement, size homogeneity and greater programmability of multifunctional properties. Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals can close these gaps in numerous application areas, following years of rapid advances in synthesis and functionalization. In this Review, we specifically focus on three key topics: optical interfaces to long-lived spin states, deterministic placement and delivery for sensing beyond the standard quantum limit, and extensions to multifunctional colloidal quantum circuits.

Leveraging Intermolecular Charge Transfer for High-Speed Optical Wireless Communication

Intermolecular charge transfer (CT) complexes have emerged as versatile platforms with customizable optical properties that play a pivotal role in achieving tunable photoresponsive materials. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach for enhancing the modulation bandwidth and net data rates in optical wireless communications (OWCs) by manipulating combinations of monomeric molecules within intermolecular CT complexes. Concurrently, we extensively investigate the intermolecular charge transfer mechanism through diverse steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved spectral techniques in the mid-infrared range complemented by theoretical calculations using density functional theory. These intermolecular CT complexes empower precise control over the -3 dB bandwidth and net data rates in OWC applications. The resulting color converters exhibit promising performance, achieving a net data rate of ∼100 Mb/s, outperforming conventional materials commonly used in the manufacture of OWC devices. This research underscores the substantial potential of engineering intermolecular charge transfer complexes as an ongoing progression and commercialization within the OWC. This carries profound implications for future initiatives in high-speed and secure data transmission, paving the way for promising endeavors in this area.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Glasses of Atomically Precise Nanoclusters

Organic-inorganic atomically precise nanoclusters provide indispensable building blocks for establishing structure-property links in hybrid condensed matter. However, robust glasses of ligand-protected nanocluster solids have yet to be demonstrated. Herein, we show [Cu4I4(PR3)4] cubane nanoclusters coordinated by phosphine ligands (PR3) form robust melt-quenched glasses in air with reversible crystal-liquid-glass transitions. Protective phosphine ligands critically influence the glass formation mechanism, modulating the glasses' physical properties. A hybrid glass utilizing ethyldiphenylphosphine-based nanoclusters, [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4], exhibits superb optical properties, including >90% transmission in both visible and near-infrared wavelengths, negligible self-absorption, near-unity quantum yield, and high light yield. Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate the structural integrity of the [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4] nanocluster, i.e., iodine-bridged tetranuclear cubane, has been fully preserved in the glass state. The strong internanocluster CH-π interactions found in the [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4] glass and subsequently reduced structural vibration account for its enhanced luminescence properties. Moreover, this highly transparent glass enables performant X-ray imaging and low-loss waveguiding in fibers drawn above the glass transition. The discovery of "nanocluster glass" opens avenues for unraveling glass formation mechanisms and designing novel luminescent glasses of well-defined building blocks for advanced photonics.

Retarding Ion Migration for Stable Blade-Coated Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

The fabrication of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) through blade coating is seen as one of the most viable paths toward commercialization. However, relative to the less scalable spin coating method, the blade coating process often results in more defective perovskite films with lower grain uniformity. Ion migration, facilitated by those elevated defect levels, is one of the main triggers of phase segregation and device instability. Here, a bifunctional molecule, p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which enhances the barrier to ion migration, induces grain growth along the (100) facet, and promotes the formation of homogeneous perovskite films with fewer defects, is reported. As a result, PSCs with PABA achieved impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 23.32% and 22.23% for devices with active areas of 0.1 cm2 and 1 cm2 , respectively. Furthermore, these devices maintain 93.8% of their initial efficiencies after 1 000 h under 1-sun illumination, 75 °C, and 10% relative humidity conditions.

Disentangling Thermal from Electronic Contributions in the Spectral Response of Photoexcited Perovskite Materials

Disentangling electronic and thermal effects in photoexcited perovskite materials is crucial for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications but remains a challenge due to their intertwined nature in both the time and energy domains. In this study, we employed temperature-dependent variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, density functional theory calculations, and broadband transient absorption spectroscopy spanning the visible to mid-to-deep-ultraviolet (UV) ranges on MAPbBr3 thin films. The use of deep-UV detection opens a new spectral window that enables the exploration of high-energy excitations at various symmetry points within the Brillouin zone, facilitating an understanding of the ultrafast responses of the UV bands and the underlying mechanisms governing them. Our investigation reveals that the photoinduced spectral features remarkably resemble those generated by pure lattice heating, and we disentangle the relative thermal and electronic contributions and their evolutions at different delay times using combinations of decay-associated spectra and temperature-induced differential absorption. The results demonstrate that the photoinduced transients possess a significant thermal origin and cannot be attributed solely to electronic effects. Following photoexcitation, as carriers (electrons and holes) transfer their energy to the lattice, the thermal contribution increases from ∼15% at 1 ps to ∼55% at 500 ps and subsequently decreases to ∼35-50% at 1 ns. These findings elucidate the intricate energy exchange between charge carriers and the lattice in photoexcited perovskite materials and provide insights into the limited utilization efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers.

High-Efficiency Circularly Polarized Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Chiral Metal Nanoclusters

Circularly polarized light-emitting diodes (CP-LEDs) are critical for next-generation optical technologies, ranging from holography to quantum information processing. Currently deployed chiral luminescent materials, with their intricate synthesis and processing and limited efficiency, are the main bottleneck for CP-LEDs. Chiral metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are potential CP-LED materials, given their ease of synthesis and processability as well as diverse structures and excited states. However, their films are usually plagued by inferior electronic quality and aggregation-caused photoluminescence quenching, necessitating their incorporation into host materials; without such a scheme, MNC-based LEDs exhibit external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) < 10%. Herein, we achieve an efficiency leap for both CP-LEDs and cluster-based LEDs by using novel chiral MNCs with aggregation-induced emission enhancement. CP-LEDs using enantiopure MNC films attain EQEs of up to 23.5%. Furthermore, by incorporating host materials, the devices yield record EQEs of up to 36.5% for both CP-LEDs and cluster-based LEDs, along with electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (|gEL|) of around 1.0 × 10-3. These findings open a new avenue for advancing chiral light sources for next-generation optoelectronics.

Hysteresis and Its Correlation to Ionic Defects in Perovskite Solar Cells

Ion migration has been reported to be one of the main reasons for hysteresis in the current-voltage (J-V) characteristics of perovskite solar cells. We investigate the interplay between ionic conduction and hysteresis types by studying Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.9Br0.1)3 triple-cation perovskite solar cells through a combination of impedance spectroscopy (IS) and sweep-rate-dependent J-V curves. By comparing polycrystalline devices to single-crystal MAPbI3 devices, we separate two defects, β and γ, both originating from long-range ionic conduction in the bulk. Defect β is associated with a dielectric relaxation, while the migration of γ is influenced by the perovskite/hole transport layer interface. These conduction types are the causes of different types of hysteresis in J-V curves. The accumulation of ionic defects at the transport layer is the dominant cause for observing tunnel-diode-like characteristics in the J-V curves. By comparing devices with interface modifications at the electron and hole transport layers, we discuss the species and polarity of involved defects.

Real-Time Tracking of Hot Carrier Injection at the Interface of FAPbBr3 Perovskite Using Femtosecond Mid-IR Spectroscopy

One of the most effective approaches to optimizing the performance of perovskite solar cells is to fully understand the ultrafast carrier dynamics at the interfaces between absorber and transporting layers at both the molecular and atomic levels. Here, the injection dynamics of hot and relaxed charge carriers at the interface between the hybrid perovskite, formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3), and the organic electron acceptor, IEICO-4F, are investigated and deciphered by using femtosecond (fs) mid-infrared (IR), transient absorption (TA), and fluorescence spectroscopies. The visible femtosecond-TA measurements reveal the generation of hot carriers and their transition to free carriers in the pure FAPbBr3 film. Meanwhile, the efficient extraction of hot carriers in the mixed FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F film is clearly evidenced by the complete disappearance of their spectral signature. More specifically, the time-resolved results reveal that hot carriers are injected from FAPbBr3 to IEICO-4F within 150 fs, while the transfer time for the relaxed carriers is about 205 fs. The time-resolved mid-IR experiments also demonstrate the ultrafast formation of two peaks at 2115 and 2233 cm-1, which can be attributed to the C≡N symmetrical and asymmetrical vibrational modes of anionic IEICO-4F, thus providing crystal clear evidence for the electron transfer process between the donor and acceptor units. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) lifetime measurements reveal an approximately 10-fold decrease in the donor lifetime in the presence of IEICO-4F, thereby confirming the efficient electron injection from the perovskite to the acceptor unit. In addition, the efficient electron injection at the FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F interface and its impact on the C≡N bond character are experimentally evidenced and align with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work offers new insights into the electron injection process at the FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F interface, which is crucial for developing efficient optoelectronic devices.

Anisotropic Superconducting Nb2 CTx MXene Processed by Atomic Exchange at the Wafer Scale

Superconductivty has recently been induced in MXenes through surface modification. However, the previous reports have mostly been based on powders or cold-pressed pellets, with no known reports on the intrinsic superconsucting properties of MXenes at the nanoale. Here, it is developed a high-temperature atomic exchange process in NH3 atmosphere which induces superconductivity in either singleflakes or thin films of Nb2 CTx MXene. The exchange process between nitrogen atoms and fluorine, carbon, and oxygen atoms in the MXene lattice and related structural adjustments are studied using both experiments and density functional theory. Using either single-flake or thin-film devices, an anisotropic magnetic response of the 2D superconducting transformation has been successfully revealed. The anisotropic superconductivity is further demonstrated using superconducting thin films uniformly deposited over a 4 in. wafers, which opens up the possibility of scalable MXene-based superconducting devices.

InAs Nanorod Colloidal Quantum Dots with Tunable Bandgaps Deep into the Short-Wave Infrared

InAs colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have emerged as candidate lead- and mercury-free solution-processed semiconductors for infrared technology due to their appropriate bulk bandgap, which can be tuned by quantum confinement, and promising charge-carrier transport properties. However, the lack of suitable arsenic precursors and readily accessible synthesis conditions have limited InAs CQDs to smaller sizes (<7 nm), with bandgaps largely restricted to <1400 nm in the near-infrared spectral window. Conventional InAs CQD synthesis requires highly reactive, hazardous arsenic precursors, which are commercially scarce, making the synthesis hard to control and study. Here, we present a controlled synthesis strategy (using only readily available and less reactive precursors) to overcome the practical wavelength limitation of InAs CQDs, achieving monodisperse InAs nanorod CQDs with bandgaps tunable from ∼1200 to ∼1800 nm, thus crossing deep into the short-wave infrared (SWIR) region. By controlling the reactivity through in situ precursor complexation, we isolate the reaction mechanism, producing InAs nanorod CQDs that display narrow excitonic features and efficient carrier multiplication. Our work enables InAs CQDs for a wider range of SWIR applications.

Imaging Light-Induced Migration of Dislocations in Halide Perovskites with 3D Nanoscale Strain Mapping

In recent years, halide perovskite materials have been used to make high-performance solar cells and light-emitting devices. However, material defects still limit device performance and stability. Here, synchrotron-based Bragg coherent diffraction imaging is used to visualize nanoscale strain fields, such as those local to defects, in halide perovskite microcrystals. Significant strain heterogeneity within MAPbBr3 (MA = CH3 NH3 + ) crystals is found in spite of their high optoelectronic quality, and both 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 edge dislocations are identified through analysis of their local strain fields. By imaging these defects and strain fields in situ under continuous illumination, dramatic light-induced dislocation migration across hundreds of nanometers is uncovered. Further, by selectively studying crystals that are damaged by the X-ray beam, large dislocation densities and increased nanoscale strains are correlated with material degradation and substantially altered optoelectronic properties assessed using photoluminescence microscopy measurements. These results demonstrate the dynamic nature of extended defects and strain in halide perovskites, which will have important consequences for device performance and operational stability.

Phonon-driven transient bandgap renormalization in perovskite single crystals

Tailoring the electronic structure of perovskite materials on ultrafast timescales is expected to shed light on optimizing optoelectronic applications. However, the transient bandgap renormalization observed upon photoexcitation is commonly explained by many-body interactions of optically created electrons and holes, which shrink the original bandgap by a few tens of millielectronvolts with a sub-picosecond time constant, while the accompanying phonon-induced effect remains hitherto unexplored. Here we unravel a significant contribution of hot phonons in the photo-induced transient bandgap renormalization in MAPbBr3 single crystals, as evidenced by asymmetric spectral evolutions and transient reflection spectral shifts in the picosecond timescale. Moreover, we performed a spatiotemporal study upon optical excitation with time-resolved scanning electron microscopy and identified that the surface charge carrier diffusion and transient bandgap renormalization are strongly correlated in time. These findings highlight the need to re-evaluate current theories on photo-induced bandgap renormalization and provide a new approach for precisely controlling the optical and electronic properties of perovskite materials, enabling the design and fabrication of high-performance optoelectronic devices with exceptional efficiency and unique properties.

Multifunctional difluoroboron β-diketonate-based luminescent receiver for a high-speed underwater wireless optical communication system

The last decade has witnessed considerable progress in underwater wireless optical communication in complex environments, particularly in exploring the deep sea. However, it is difficult to maintain a precise point-to-point reception at all times due to severe turbulence in actual situations. To facilitate efficient data transmission, the color-conversion technique offers a paradigm shift in large-area and omnidirectional light detection, which can effectively alleviate the étendue limit by decoupling the field of view and optical gain. In this work, we investigated a series of difluoroboron β-diketonate fluorophores by measuring their photophysical properties and optical wireless communication performances. The emission colors were tuned from blue to green, and >0.5 Gb/s data transmission was achieved with individual color channel in free space by implementing an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme. In the underwater experiment, the fluorophore with the highest transmission speed was fabricated into a 4×4 cm2 luminescent concentrator, with the concentrated emission from the edges coupled with an optical fiber array, for large-area photodetection and optical beam tracking. The net data rates of 130 Mb/s and 217 Mb/s were achieved based on nonreturn- to-zero on-off keying and OFDM modulation schemes, respectively. Further, the same device was used to demonstrate the linear light beam tracking function with high accuracy, which is beneficial for sustaining a reliable and stable connection in a dynamic, turbulent underwater environment.

Isostructural Nanocluster Manipulation Reveals Pivotal Role of One Surface Atom in Click Chemistry

Elucidating single-atom effects on the fundamental properties of nanoparticles is challenging because single-atom modifications are typically accompanied by appreciable changes to the overall particle's structure. Herein, we report the synthesis of a [Cu58 H20 PET36 (PPh3 )4 ]2+ (Cu58 ; PET: phenylethanethiolate; PPh3 : triphenylphosphine) nanocluster-an atomically precise nanoparticle-that can be transformed into the surface-defective analog [Cu57 H20 PET36 (PPh3 )4 ]+ (Cu57 ). Both nanoclusters are virtually identical, with five concentric metal shells, save for one missing surface copper atom in Cu57 . Remarkably, the loss of this single surface atom drastically alters the reactivity of the nanocluster. In contrast to Cu58 , Cu57 shows promising activity for click chemistry, particularly photoinduced [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition (AAC), which is attributed to the active catalytic site in Cu57 after the removal of one surface copper atom. Our study not only presents a unique system for uncovering the effect of a single-surface atom modification on nanoparticle properties but also showcases single-atom surface modification as a powerful means for designing nanoparticle catalysts.

Discovery of a three-proton insertion mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide leading to enhanced charge storage capacity

The α-molybdenum trioxide has attracted much attention for proton storage owing to its easily modified bilayer structure, fast proton insertion kinetics, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the fundamental science of the proton insertion mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide has not been fully understood. Herein, we uncover a three-proton intercalation mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide using a specially designed phosphoric acid based liquid crystalline electrolyte. The semiconductor-to-metal transition behavior and the expansion of the lattice interlayers of α-molybdenum trioxide after trapping one mole of protons are verified experimentally and theoretically. Further investigation of the morphology of α-molybdenum trioxide indicates its fracture behavior upon the proton intercalation process, which creates diffusion channels for hydronium ions. Notably, the observation of an additional redox behavior at low potential endows α-molybdenum trioxide with an improved specific discharge capacity of 362 mAh g-1.

Wide-field-of-view optical detectors for deep ultraviolet light communication using all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals

Optical wireless communication (OWC) links suffer from strict requirements of pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) between the transmitter and receiver. Extending the narrow field-of-view (FoV) of conventional light-focusing elements at the receiver side can relax the PAT requirements. Herein, we use all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) to extend various optical concentrators' FOV to 60°, regardless of the original FOV values of the concentrators. Given the robustness of UV light against communication channel misalignment, the used CsPbBr3 NCs provide another advantage of converting transmitted UVC light into a green color that matches the peak absorption of the widely available Si-based detectors. We evaluated the feasibility of the reported wide FoV optical detectors by including them in deep UV OWC systems, deploying non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation schemes. The NRZ-OOK and OFDM schemes exhibit stable communication over the 60° FoV, providing data transmission rates of 100 Mb/s and 71.6 Mb/s, respectively, a unique capability to the reported design.

TADF-Based X-ray Screens with Simultaneously Efficient Singlet and Triplet Energy Transfer for High Spatial Imaging Resolution

X-ray imaging scintillators play a crucial role in medical examinations and safety inspections, making them an essential technology in our modern lives. However, commercially available high-performance scintillators are fabricated exclusively from ceramic materials that require harsh preparation conditions and are costly to produce. Organic scintillators have emerged as a promising alternative due to their transparency and ease of fabrication at a low cost. Unfortunately, organic scintillators suffer from inefficient exciton utilization efficiency, leading to poor performance in X-ray imaging screens and hindering their commercialization. In this study, we explore the use of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) chromophores (4CzIPN-I and 4CzTPN) to enhance the absorption of ionizing radiation in X-ray imaging screens by an order of magnitude. By leveraging the unique features of TADF chromophores through simultaneously singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet efficient energy transfers at the interface between two different TADF systems, we demonstrate an impressive X-ray sensitivity and radioluminescence intensity. Our time-resolved experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide further evidence for the effectiveness of this approach. The resulting X-ray imaging screens based on this efficient interfacial energy transfer process in TADF systems exhibit outstanding X-ray imaging resolution of 20 line pairs/mm, the highest resolution reported thus far for organic scintillators. This resolution is at least two times higher than that achieved by commonly used commercial inorganic scintillators in the X-ray imaging market. These findings introduce a new component for greatly improving the performance of organic X-ray imaging scintillators, supporting a wide range of emerging X-ray applications with exceptional spatial resolution.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tunable Colors for High-Performance Wireless Communication

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as excellent platforms possessing tunable and controllable optical behaviors that are essential in high-speed and multichannel data transmission in optical wireless communications (OWCs). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to achieving a tunable wide modulation bandwidth and high net data rate by engineering a combination of organic linkers and metal clusters in MOFs. More specifically, two organic linkers of different emission colors, but equal molecular length and connectivity, are successfully coordinated by zirconium and hafnium oxy-hydroxy clusters to form the desired MOF structures. The precise change in the interactions between these different organic linkers and metal clusters enables control over fluorescence efficiency and excited state lifetime, leading to a tunable modulation bandwidth from 62.1 to 150.0 MHz and a net data rate from 303 to 363 Mb/s. The fabricated color converter MOFs display outstanding performance that competes, and in some instances surpasses, those of conventional materials commonly used in light converter devices. Moreover, these MOFs show high practicality in color-pure wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), which significantly improved the data transmission link capacity and security by the contemporary combining of two different data signals in the same path. This work highlights the potential of engineered MOFs as a game-changer in OWCs, with significant implications for future high-speed and secure data transmission.

Bond Polarizability as a Probe of Local Crystal Fields in Hybrid Lead-Halide Perovskites

A rotating organic cation and a dynamically disordered soft inorganic cage are the hallmark features of organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites. Understanding the interplay between these two subsystems is a challenging problem, but it is this coupling that is widely conjectured to be responsible for the unique behavior of photocarriers in these materials. In this work, we use the fact that the polarizability of the organic cation strongly depends on the ambient electrostatic environment to put the molecule forward as a sensitive probe of the local crystal fields inside the lattice cell. We measure the average polarizability of the C/N-H bond stretching mode by means of infrared spectroscopy, which allows us to deduce the character of the motion of the cation molecule, find the magnitude of the local crystal field, and place an estimate on the strength of the hydrogen bond between the hydrogen and halide atoms. Our results pave the way for understanding electric fields in lead-halide perovskites using infrared bond spectroscopy.

Atomic-Scale Polarization and Strain at the Surface of Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are being widely explored as next-generation optoelectronic materials. Critical to understanding the optoelectronic properties and stability behavior of perovskite NCs is the material's surface structure, where the local atomic configuration deviates from that of the bulk. Through low-dose aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and quantitative imaging analysis techniques, we directly observed the atomic structure at the surface of the CsPbBr₃ NCs. CsPbBr₃ NCs are terminated by a Cs-Br plane, and the surface Cs-Cs bond length decreases significantly (∼5.6%) relative to the bulk, imposing compressive strain and inducing polarization, which we also observed in CsPbI₃ NCs. Density functional theory calculations suggest such a reconstructed surface contributes to the separation of holes and electrons. These findings enhance our fundamental understanding of the atomic-scale structure, strain, and polarity at the surface of inorganic halide perovskites and provide valuable insights into designing stable and efficient optoelectronic devices.

Radioluminescent Cu-Au Metal Nanoclusters: Synthesis and Self-Assembly for Efficient X-ray Scintillation and Imaging

Zero-dimensional (0D) scintillation materials have drawn tremendous attention due to their inherent advantages in the fabrication of flexible high-energy radiation scintillation screens by solution processes. Although considerable progress has been made in the development of 0D scintillators, such as the current leading lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals and quantum dots, challenges still persist, including potential issues with self-absorption, air stability, and eco-friendliness. Here, we present a strategy to overcome those limitations by synthesis and self-assembly of a new class of scintillators based on metal nanoclusters. We demonstrate the gram-scale synthesis of an atomically precise nanocluster with a Cu-Au alloy core exhibiting high phosphorescence quantum yield, aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior, and intense radioluminescence. By controlling solvent interactions, the AIEE-active nanoclusters were self-assembled into submicron spherical superparticles in solution, which we exploited as a novel building block for flexible particle-deposited scintillation films with high-resolution X-ray imaging performance. This work reveals metal nanoclusters and their self-assembled superstructures as a promising class of scintillators for practical applications in high-energy radiation detection and imaging.

Atomically Precise Defective Copper Nanocluster Catalysts for Highly Selective C-C Cross-Coupling Reaction

Point defects in nanoparticles have long been hypothesized to play an important role in governing the particle's electronic structure and physicochemical properties. However, single point defects in material systems usually exist with other heterogeneities, obscuring the chemical role of the effects. Herein, we report a novel atomically precise, copper hydride nanoclusters (NCs), [Cu28H10(C7H7S)18(TPP)3] (Cu28; TPP: triphenylphosphine; C7H7S: o-thiocresol) with a defined defect in the gram scale via a one-pot reduction method. The Cu28 acts as a highly selective catalyst in for C-C cross-couplings. The work highlights the potential of defective NCs as model systems for investigating individual defects, correlating defects with physiochemical properties, and rationally designing new nanoparticle catalysts.

Copper Organometallic Iodide Arrays for Efficient X-ray Imaging Scintillators

Lead-free organic metal halide scintillators with low-dimensional electronic structures have demonstrated great potential in X-ray detection and imaging due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Herein, the zero-dimensional organic copper halide (18-crown-6)₂Na₂(H₂O)₃Cu₄I₆ (CNCI) which exhibits negligible self-absorption and near-unity green-light emission was successfully deployed into X-ray imaging scintillators with outstanding X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution. In particular, we fabricated a CNCI/polymer composite scintillator with an ultrahigh light yield of ∼109,000 photons/MeV, representing one of the highest values reported so far for scintillation materials. In addition, an ultralow detection limit of 59.4 nGy/s was achieved, which is approximately 92 times lower than the dosage for a standard medical examination. Moreover, the spatial imaging resolution of the CNCI scintillator was further improved by using a silicon template due to the wave-guiding of light through CNCI-filled pores. The pixelated CNCI-silicon array scintillation screen displays an impressive spatial resolution of 24.8 line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) compared to the resolution of 16.3 lp/mm for CNCI-polymer film screens, representing the highest resolutions reported so far for organometallic-based X-ray imaging screens. This design represents a new approach to fabricating high-performance X-ray imaging scintillators based on organic metal halides for applications in medical radiography and security screening.

Singlet Fission-Based High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging Scintillation Screens

X-ray imaging technology is critical to numerous different walks of daily life, ranging from medical radiography and security screening all the way to high-energy physics. Although several organic chromophores are fabricated and tested as X-ray imaging scintillators, they generally show poor scintillation performance due to their weak X-ray absorption cross-section and inefficient exciton utilization efficiency. Here, a singlet fission-based high-performance organic X-ray imaging scintillator with near unity exciton utilization efficiency is presented. Interestingly, it is found that the X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution of the singlet fission-based scintillator are dramatically improved by an efficient energy transfer from a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer, in which both singlet and triplet excitons can be efficiently harnessed. The fabricated singlet fission-based scintillator exhibits a high X-ray imaging resolution of 27.5 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm^-1 ), which exceeds that of most commercial scintillators, demonstrating its high potential use in medical radiography and security inspection.

Efficient Near-Infrared Electroluminescence from Lanthanide-Doped Perovskite Quantum Cutters

Perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) deliver size and composition-tunable luminescence of high efficiency and color purity in the visible. However, attaining efficient electroluminescence (EL) in the near-infrared (NIR) region from PeNCs is challenging, limiting their potential applications. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient NIR light emitting diode (LED) by doping ytterbium ions into the PeNCs host (Yb3+:PeNCs), extending the EL wavelengths toward 1000 nm, which is achieved through a direct sensitization of Yb3+ ions by the PeNC host. Efficient quantum cutting processes enable high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of up to 126% from the Yb3+:PeNCs. Through halide-composition engineering and surface passivation strategy to improve both PLQY and charge transport balance, we demonstrate an efficient NIR LED with a peak EQE of 7.7% at a central wavelength of 990 nm, representing the most efficient perovskite-based LEDs with emission wavelengths beyond 850 nm.

Zero-dimensional Cu(I)-based organometallic halide with green cluster-centred emission for high resolution X-ray imaging screens

In this communication, we report a low-dimensional perovskite-related structure based on Cu(I) organometallic halide with strong green cluster-centred emission and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield. The 0D [Rb(18-crown-6)]₂Cu₄I₆ was sucessfully applied for X-ray imaging screens which exhibit high spatial resolution of 16.8 lp mm^-1 and low detection limit of 458 nGy s^-1.

Controlling the Fluorescence Performance of AIE Polymers by Controlling the Polymer Microstructure

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) polymers with expected emission wavelength/color and fluorescence efficiency are valuable in applications. However, most AIE polymers exhibit irregular emission wavelength/color changes compared to the original AIE monomers. Here, we report the synthesis of AIE polymers with unchanged emission wavelength by ring-opening (co)polymerizations of 4-(triphenylethenyl)phenoxymethyloxirane (TPEO) and other epoxides or phthalic anhydride. The chemical structures/physical properties of all (co)polymers were characterized by NMR, SEC, MALDI-TOF, and DSC. The co-polyether microstructures were revealed by calculating the reactivity ratios and visualized by Monte Carlo simulation. The photoluminescence quantum yields of all the (co)polymers were determined in the solid state. We systematically correlated the fluorescence performance with molecular weights, crystallinity, monomer compositions, glass transition temperatures, side lengths, and flexibility/rigidity.

Spin-Electric Coupling in Lead Halide Perovskites

Lead halide perovskites enjoy a number of remarkable optoelectronic properties. To explain their origin, it is necessary to study how electromagnetic fields interact with these systems. We address this problem here by studying two classical quantities: Faraday rotation and the complex refractive index in a paradigmatic perovskite CH_{3}NH_{3}PbBr_{3} in a broad wavelength range. We find that the minimal coupling of electromagnetic fields to the k·p Hamiltonian is insufficient to describe the observed data even on the qualitative level. To amend this, we demonstrate that there exists a relevant atomic-level coupling between electromagnetic fields and the spin degree of freedom. This spin-electric coupling allows for quantitative description of a number of previous as well as present experimental data. In particular, we use it here to show that the Faraday effect in lead halide perovskites is dominated by the Zeeman splitting of the energy levels and has a substantial beyond-Becquerel contribution. Finally, we present general symmetry-based phenomenological arguments that in the low-energy limit our effective model includes all basis coupling terms to the electromagnetic field in the linear order.

Single-Crystal Perovskite Solar Cells Exhibit Close to Half A Millimeter Electron-Diffusion Length

Single-crystal halide perovskites exhibit photogenerated-carriers of high mobility and long lifetime, making them excellent candidates for applications demanding thick semiconductors, such as ionizing radiation detectors, nuclear batteries, and concentrated photovoltaics. However, charge collection depreciates with increasing thickness; therefore, tens to hundreds of volts of external bias is required to extract charges from a thick perovskite layer, leading to a considerable amount of dark current and fast degradation of perovskite absorbers. However, extending the carrier-diffusion length can mitigate many of the anticipated issues preventing the practical utilization of perovskites in the abovementioned applications. Here, single-crystal perovskite solar cells that are up to 400 times thicker than state-of-the-art perovskite polycrystalline films are fabricated, yet retain high charge-collection efficiency in the absence of an external bias. Cells with thicknesses of 110, 214, and 290 µm display power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 20.0, 18.4, and 14.7%, respectively. The remarkable persistence of high PCEs, despite the increase in thickness, is a result of a long electron-diffusion length in those cells, which was estimated, from the thickness-dependent short-circuit current, to be ≈0.45 mm under 1 sun illumination. These results pave the way for adapting perovskite devices to optoelectronic applications in which a thick active layer is essential.

Quantum Tunneling Effect in CsPbBr3 Multiple Quantum Wells

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have garnered incredible attention thanks to their exciting optoelectronic properties and intrinsic strong quantum confinement effect. Herein, we carefully investigate and decipher the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between CsPbBr₃ multiple quantum wells (MQWs) as the photoactive layer and TiO₂ and Spiro-OMeTAD as electron and hole transporting materials, respectively. The fabricated MQWs comprise three monolayers of CsPbBr₃ separated by 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) as barriers. By varying the BCP thickness, we show that charge carrier extraction from MQWs to the corresponding extracting layer occurs through a quantum tunneling effect, as elaborated by steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and further verified by femtosecond transient absorption experiments. Ultimately, we have investigated the impact of the barrier-thickness-dependent quantum tunneling effect on the photoelectric behavior of the synthesized QW photodetector devices. Our findings shed light on one of the most promising approaches for efficient carrier extraction in quantum-confined systems.

Lecithin Capping Ligands Enable Ultrastable Perovskite-Phase CsPbI3 Quantum Dots for Rec. 2020 Bright-Red Light-Emitting Diodes

Bright-red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a narrow emission line width that emit between 620 and 635 nm are needed to meet the latest industry color standard for wide color gamut displays, Rec. 2020. CsPbI₃ perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are one of the few known materials that are ideally suited to meet these criteria. Unfortunately, CsPbI₃ perovskite QDs are prone to transform into a non-red-emitting phase and are subject to further degradation mechanisms when their luminescence wavelength is tuned to match that of the Rec. 2020 standard. Here, we show that zwitterionic lecithin ligands can stabilize the perovskite phase of CsPbI₃ QDs for long periods in air for at least 6 months compared to a few days for control samples. LEDs fabricated with our ultrastable lecithin-capped CsPbI₃ QDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1% for electroluminescence centered at 634 nm─a record for all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals in Rec. 2020 red. Our devices achieve a maximum luminance of 1391 cd/m² at 7.5 V, and their operational half-life is 33 min (T₅₀) at 200 cd/m²─a 10-fold enhancement compared to control samples. Density functional theory results suggest that the surface strain in CsPbI₃ QDs capped with the conventional ligands, oleic acid and oleylamine, contributes to the instability of the perovskite structural phase. On the other hand, lecithin binding induces virtually no surface strain and shows a stronger binding tendency for the CsPbI₃ surface. Our study highlights the tremendous potential of zwitterionic ligands in stabilizing the perovskite phase and particle size of CsPbI₃ QDs for various optoelectronic applications.

Visible-Light Copper Nanocluster Catalysis for the C-N Coupling of Aryl Chlorides at Room Temperature

Activation of aryl chlorides in cross-coupling reactions is a long-standing challenge in organic synthesis that is of great interest to industry. Ultrasmall (<3 nm), atomically precise nanoclusters (NCs) are considered one of the most promising catalysts due to their high surface area and unsaturated active sites. Herein, we introduce a copper nanocluster-based catalyst, [Cu₆₁(S^tBu)₂₆S₆Cl₆H₁₄] (Cu₆₁NC) that enables C-N bond-forming reactions of aryl chlorides under visible-light irradiation at room temperature. A range of N-heterocyclic nucleophiles and electronically and sterically diverse aryl/hetero chlorides react in this new Cu₆₁NC-catalyzed process to afford the C-N coupling products in good yields. Mechanistic studies indicate that a single-electron-transfer (SET) process between the photoexcited Cu₆₁NC complex and aryl halide enables the C-N-arylation reaction.

Ultrafast transient infrared spectroscopy for probing trapping states in hybrid perovskite films

Studying the charge dynamics of perovskite materials is a crucial step to understand the outstanding performance of these materials in various fields. Herein, we utilize transient absorption in the mid-infrared region, where solely electron signatures in the conduction bands are monitored without external contributions from other dynamical species. Within the measured range of 4000 nm to 6000 nm (2500-1666 cm^-1), the recombination and the trapping processes of the excited carriers could be easily monitored. Moreover, we reveal that within this spectral region the trapping process could be distinguished from recombination process, in which the iodide-based films show more tendencies to trap the excited electrons in comparison to the bromide-based derivatives. The trapping process was assigned due to the emission released in the mid-infrared region, while the traditional band-gap recombination process did not show such process. Various parameters have been tested such as film composition, excitation dependence and the probing wavelength. This study opens new frontiers for the transient mid-infrared absorption to assign the trapping process in perovskite films both qualitatively and quantitatively, along with the potential applications of perovskite films in the mid-IR region.

Plasmonic Nb2CTx MXene-MAPbI3 Heterostructure for Self-Powered Visible-NIR Photodiodes

The ability of MXenes to efficiently absorb light is greatly enriched by the surface plasmons oscillating at their two-dimensional (2D) surfaces. Thus far, MXenes have shown impressive plasmonic absorptions spanning the visible and infrared (IR) regimes. However, their potential use in IR optoelectronic applications, including photodiodes, has been marginally investigated. Besides, their relatively low resistivity has limited their use as photosensing materials due to their intrinsic high dark current. Herein, heterostructures made of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI₃) perovskite and niobium carbide (Nb₂CT_x) MXene are prepared with a matching band structure and exploited for self-powered visible-near IR (NIR) photodiodes. Using MAPbI₃ has expanded the operation range of the MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x photodiode to the visible regime while suppressing the relatively large dark current of the NIR-absorbing Nb₂CT_x. In consequence, the fabricated MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x photodiode has responded linearly to white light illumination with a responsivity of 0.25 A/W and a temporal photoresponse of <4.5 μs. Furthermore, when illuminated by NIR laser (1064 nm), our photodiode demonstrates a higher on/off ratio (∼10³) and faster response times (<30 ms) compared to that of planar Nb₂CT_x-only detectors (<2 and 20 s, respectively). The performed space-charge-limited current (SCLC) and capacitance measurements reveal that such an efficient and enhanced charge transfer depends on the coordinate bonding between the surface groups of the MXene and the undercoordinated Pb²⁺ ions of the MAPbI₃ at the passivated MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x interface.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for High-Speed Visible-Light Communication

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) based on luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and emissive polymers with the combination of their unique advantages have great potential in separation science, sensing, and light-harvesting applications. Here, we demonstrate MMMs for the field of high-speed visible-light communication (VLC) using a very efficient energy transfer strategy at the interface between a MOF and an emissive polymer. Our steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved experiments, supported by high-level density functional theory calculations, revealed that efficient and ultrafast energy transfer from the luminescent MOF to the luminescent polymer can be achieved. The resultant MMMs exhibited an excellent modulation bandwidth of around 80 MHz, which is higher than those of most well-established color-converting phosphors commonly used for optical wireless communication. Interestingly, we found that the efficient energy transfer further improved the light communication data rate from 132 Mb/s of the pure polymer to 215 Mb/s of MMMs. This finding not only showcases the promise of the MMMs for high-speed VLC but also highlights the importance of an efficient and ultrafast energy transfer strategy for the advancement of data rates of optical wireless communication.

All-inorganic halide-perovskite polymer-fiber-photodetector for high-speed optical wireless communication

The use of optical carrier frequencies will enable seamless data connection for future terrestrial and underwater internet uses and will resolve the technological gap faced by other communication modalities. However, several issues must be solved to propel this technological shift, which include the limitations in designing optical receivers with large detection areas, omnidirectionality, and high modulation bandwidth, mimicking antennas operating in the radio-frequency spectrum. To address this technological gap, herein, we demonstrate halide-perovskite-polymer-based scintillating fibers as a near-omnidirectional detection platform for several tens-to-hundreds of Mbit/s optical communication in both free space and underwater links. The incorporation of all-inorganic CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals by engineering the nanocrystal concentration in an ultraviolet-curable polymer matrix ensures a high photoluminescence quantum yield, Mega-Hertz modulation bandwidth and Mbit/s data rate suitable to be used as a high-speed fibers-based receiver. The resultant perovskite polymer-based scintillating fibers offer flexibility in terms of shape and near-omnidirectional detection features. Such fiber properties also introduce a scalable detection area which can resolve the resistance-capacitance and angle-of-acceptance limits in planar-based detectors, which conventionally impose a trade-off between the modulation bandwidth, detection area, and angle of view. A high bit rate of 23 Mbit/s and 152.5 Mbit/s was achieved using an intensity-modulated laser for non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme in free-space and quadrature amplitude modulation orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM) modulation scheme in an underwater environment, respectively. Our near-omnidirectional optical-based antenna based on perovskite-polymer-based scintillating fibers sheds light on the immense possibilities of incorporating functional nanomaterials for empowering light-based terrestrial- and underwater-internet systems.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Cryogenic Focused Ion Beam Enables Atomic-Resolution Imaging of Local Structures in Highly Sensitive Bulk Crystals and Devices

With the development of ultralow-dose (scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) techniques, atomic-resolution imaging of highly sensitive nanomaterials has recently become possible. However, applying these techniques to the study of sensitive bulk materials remains challenging due to the lack of suitable specimen preparation methods. We report that cryogenic focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) can provide a solution to this challenge. We successfully extracted thin specimens from metal–organic framework (MOF) crystals and a hybrid halide perovskite single-crystal film solar cell using cryo-FIB without damaging the inherent structures. The high quality of the specimens enabled the subsequent (S)TEM and electron diffraction studies to reveal complex unknown local structures at an atomic resolution. The obtained structural information allowed us to resolve planar defects in MOF HKUST-1, three-dimensionally reconstruct a concomitant phase in MOF UiO-66, and discover a new CH₃NH₃PbI₃ structure and locate its distribution in a single-crystal film perovskite solar cell. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates that cryo-FIB has a unique ability to handle highly sensitive materials, which can substantially expand the range of applications for electron microscopy.

Self-Assembly and Regrowth of Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals for Optoelectronic Applications

Over the past decade, the impressive development of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has made them leading candidates for applications in photovoltaics (PVs), X-ray scintillators, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Constructing MHP nanocrystals (NCs) with promising optoelectronic properties using a low-cost approach is critical to realizing their commercial potential. Self-assembly and regrowth techniques provide a simple and powerful “bottom-up” platform for controlling the structure, shape, and dimensionality of MHP NCs. The soft ionic nature of MHP NCs, in conjunction with their low formation energy, rapid anion exchange, and ease of ion migration, enables the rearrangement of their overall appearance via self-assembly or regrowth. Because of their low formation energy and highly dynamic surface ligands, MHP NCs have a higher propensity to regrow than conventional hard-lattice NCs. Moreover, their self-assembly and regrowth can be achieved simultaneously. The self-assembly of NCs into close-packed, long-range-ordered mesostructures provides a platform for modulating their electronic properties (e.g., conductivity and carrier mobility). Moreover, assembled MHP NCs exhibit collective properties (e.g., superfluorescence, renormalized emission, longer phase coherence times, and long exciton diffusion lengths) that can translate into dramatic improvements in device performance. Further regrowth into fused MHP nanostructures with the removal of ligand barriers between NCs could facilitate charge carrier transport, eliminate surface point defects, and enhance stability against moisture, light, and electron-beam irradiation. However, the synthesis strategies, diversity and complexity of structures, and optoelectronic applications that emanate from the self-assembly and regrowth of MHPs have not yet received much attention. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the design principles of self-assembled and fused MHP nanostructures will fuel further advances in their optoelectronic applications.

In this Account, we review the latest developments in the self-assembly and regrowth of MHP NCs. We begin with a survey of the mechanisms, driving forces, and techniques for controlling MHP NC self-assembly. We then explore the phase transition of fused MHP nanostructures at the atomic level, delving into the mechanisms of facet-directed connections and the kinetics of their shape-modulation behavior, which have been elucidated with the aid of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and first-principles density functional theory calculations of surface energies. We further outline the applications of assembled and fused nanostructures. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on current challenges and future directions in the field of MHP NCs.

Resonance-Mediated Dynamic Modulation of Perovskite Crystallization for Efficient and Stable Solar Cells

Manipulating perovskite crystallization to prepare high-quality perovskite films is the key to achieving highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a dynamic strategy is proposed to modulate perovskite crystallization using a resonance hole-transporting material (HTM) capable of fast self-adaptive tautomerization between multiple electronic states with neutral and charged resonance forms for mediating perovskite crystal growth and defect passivation in situ. This approach, based on resonance variation with self-adaptive molecular interactions between the HTM and the perovskite, produces high-quality perovskite films with smooth surface, oriented crystallization, and low charge recombination, leading to high-performance inverted PSCs with power conversion efficiencies approaching 22% for small-area devices (0.09 cm² ) and up to 19.5% for large-area devices (1.02 cm² ). Also, remarkably high stability of the PSCs is observed, retaining over 90%, 88%, or 83% of the initial efficiencies in air with relative humidity of 40-50%, under continuous one-sun illumination, or at 75 °C annealing for 1000 h without encapsulation.

Luminescence and Stability Enhancement of Inorganic Perovskite Nanocrystals via Selective Surface Ligand Binding

Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently emerged as one of the most promising light-emitting materials for optoelectronic devices with outstanding performance. However, the facile detachment of surface capping organic ligands from these NCs leads to very poor colloidal stability and durability. This is mainly due to the weak interfacial interactions between the inorganic perovskite core and ligands, high density of surface defect states, and aggregation of NCs. Here, using a combination of time-resolved laser spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we explored the major impact of surface orientations and terminations for both CsPbBr₃ and Cs₄PbBr₆ NCs not only on the interfacial binding affinities with organic ligands but also on surface defect formation and NC aggregation. By rationalizing that surface trap states are responsible for the decrease in photoluminescence (PL) upon fabrication and purification, we propose a powerful ligand-engineering strategy for eliminating these trap states and preventing the aggregation of CsPbBr₃ and Cs₄PbBr₆ NCs. Interestingly, we find that the surface orientation and dimensionality determine the degree of interfacial interactions between the inorganic perovskite core and ligands and subsequently control the overall PL intensity and NC stability. Our results demonstrate that a treatment of as-synthesized CsPbBr₃ NCs consisting of the addition of extra oleylammonium bromide (OAmBr) as a capping ligand, allows the CsPbBr₃ NCs to retain their green emission with increased PL intensity and quantum yields and improves colloidal durability. On the other hand, the ultraviolet emissions of Cs₄PbBr₆ NCs are effectively increased upon addition of extra cesium oleate (CsOL) as the trap states induced by surface cesium ions are largely reduced by the formation of Cs-O bonds. Our work provides a robust and adequate ligand engineering approach to significantly enhance the optical behavior of perovskite NCs with different dimensionalities and various compositions and to achieve more efficient and stable light-harvesting devices.

Efficient and Spectrally Stable Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Employing a Cationic π-Conjugated Polymer

Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have demonstrated remarkable potentials in solution-processed blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the unsatisfied efficiency and spectral stability responsible for trap-mediated non-radiative losses and halide phase segregation remain the primary unsolved challenges for blue perovskite LEDs. In this study, it is reported that a fluorene-based π-conjugated cationic polymer can be blended with the perovskite semiconductor to control film formation and optoelectronic properties. As a result, sky-blue and true-blue perovskite LEDs with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.08, 0.22) and (0.12, 0.13) at the record external quantum efficiencies of 11.2% and 8.0% were achieved. In addition, the mixed halide perovskites with the conjugated cationic polymer exhibit excellent spectral stability under external bias. This result illustrates that π-conjugated cationic polymers have a great potential to realize efficient blue mixed-halide perovskite LEDs with stable electroluminescence.

Cyanamide Passivation Enables Robust Elemental Imaging of Metal Halide Perovskites at Atomic Resolution

Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have attracted a tremendous amount of attention because of their applications in solar cells, lighting, and optoelectronics. However, the atomistic principles underlying their decomposition processes remain in large part obscure, likely due to the lack of precise information about their local structures and composition along regions with dimensions on the angstrom scale, such as crystal interfaces. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) is an ideal tool, in principle, for probing such information. However, atomic-resolution EDS has not been achieved for LHPs because of their instability under electron-beam irradiation. We report the fabrication of CsPbBr₃ nanoplates with high beam stability through an interface-assisted regrowth strategy using cyanamide. The ultrahigh stability of the nanoplates primarily stems from two contributions: defect-healing self-assembly/regrowth processes and surface modulation by strong electron-withdrawing cyanamide molecules. The ultrahigh stability of as-prepared CsPbBr₃ nanoplates enabled atomic-resolution EDS elemental mapping, which revealed atomically and elementally resolved details of the LHP nanostructures at an unprecedented level. While improving the stability of LHPs is critical for device applications, this work illustrates how improving the beam stability of LHPs is essential for addressing fundamental questions on structure-property relations in LHPs.

Phosphatidylcholine-mediated regulation of growth kinetics for colloidal synthesis of cesium tin halide nanocrystals

Cesium tin halide (CsSnX₃, where X is halogen) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are one of the most representative alternatives to their lead-based cousins. However, a fundamental understanding of how to regulate the growth kinetics of colloidal CsSnX₃ NCs is still lacking and, specifically, the role of surfactants in affecting their growth kinetics remains incompletely understood. Here we report a general approach for colloidal synthesis of CsSnX₃ perovskite NCs through a judicious combination of capping agents. We demonstrate that introducing a small amount of zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine in the reaction is of vital importance for regulating the growth kinetics of CsSnX₃ NCs, which otherwise merely leads to the formation of large-sized powders. Based on a range of experimental characterization, we propose that the formation of intermediate complexes between zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine and the precursors and the steric hindrance effect of branched fatty acid side-chains of phosphatidylcholine can regulate the growth kinetics of CsSnX₃, which enables us to obtain CsSnX₃ NCs with emission quantum yields among the highest values ever reported. Our finding of using zwitterionic capping agents to regulate the growth kinetics may inspire more research on the synthesis of high-quality tin-based perovskite NCs that could speed up their practical applications in optoelectronic devices.
