The Interplay of Spacer Chirality and Parity in Mesogenic Dimers. Chemphyschem 2024; 25:e202400065. Abstract
Introducing chirality into soft materials, including liquid crystals (LCs), profoundly impacts their self-organization and physical properties. In this study, we synthesized a novel series of LC dimers with a chiral center as part of their flexible spacer. The dimers were prepared in racemic and enantiomerically pure forms. Their spacer length and parity were varied to investigate the effect of spacer chirality and parity on mesomorphic behavior and on chiral induction in the nematic phase of achiral mesogens. Our results show that the even-membered chiral dimers only have chiral nematic phases. In contrast, the odd-membered dimers display rich mesomorphism, including the intriguing blue phase (BP) and chiral form of the twist-bend nematic phase (N*TB). The observed significant difference in the 3D surface morphology between the racemic and chiral forms of the N*TB phase suggests that the chiral moiety in the spacer promotes a chiral hierarchy. Furthermore, the chiral dimers show a prominent odd-even effect in the helical twisting power in nematic hosts. These findings highlight the importance of the position of the chiral group within the dimeric molecule and provide new insights into how intrinsic chirality in the spacer affects the overall structural chirality.

A view of the pan-genome of domesticated Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.). THE PLANT GENOME 2024; 17:e20319. Abstract
Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. Walp., is a diploid warm-season legume of critical importance as both food and fodder in sub-Saharan Africa. This species is also grown in Northern Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, and East to Southeast Asia. To capture the genomic diversity of domesticates of this important legume, de novo genome assemblies were produced for representatives of six subpopulations of cultivated cowpea identified previously from genotyping of several hundred diverse accessions. In the most complete assembly (IT97K-499-35), 26,026 core and 4963 noncore genes were identified, with 35,436 pan genes when considering all seven accessions. GO terms associated with response to stress and defense response were highly enriched among the noncore genes, while core genes were enriched in terms related to transcription factor activity, and transport and metabolic processes. Over 5 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) relative to each assembly and over 40 structural variants >1 Mb in size were identified by comparing genomes. Vu10 was the chromosome with the highest frequency of SNPs, and Vu04 had the most structural variants. Noncore genes harbor a larger proportion of potentially disruptive variants than core genes, including missense, stop gain, and frameshift mutations; this suggests that noncore genes substantially contribute to diversity within domesticated cowpea.

Crystalline restacking of 2D-materials from their nanosheets suspensions. NANOSCALE 2023; 15:18359-18367. Abstract
We report here the highly ordered restacking of the layered phosphatoantimonic dielectric materials H3(1-x)M3xSb3P2O14, (where M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and 0 ≤ x ≤ 1), from their nanosheets dispersed in colloidal suspension, induced by a simple pH change using alkaline bases. H3Sb3P2O14 aqueous suspensions are some of the rare examples of colloidal suspensions based on 2D materials exhibiting a lamellar liquid crystalline phase. Because the lamellar period can reach several hundred nanometers, the suspensions show vivid structural colors and because these colors are sensitive to various chemicals, the suspensions can be used as sensors. The structures of the lamellar liquid crystalline phase and the restacked phase have been studied by X-ray scattering (small and wide angle), which has followed the dependence of the lamellar/restacked phase equilibrium on the cation exchange rate, x. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the restacked phase is almost identical to that of the M3Sb3P2O14 crystalline phase, showing that the restacking is highly accurate and avoids the turbostratic disorder of the nanosheets classically observed in nanosheet stacking of other 2D materials. Strikingly, the restacking process exhibits features highly reminiscent of a first-order phase transition, with the existence of a phase coexistence region where both ∼1 nm (interlayer spacing of the restacked phase) and ∼120 nm lamellar periods can be observed simultaneously. Furthermore, this first-order phase transition is well described theoretically by incorporating a Lennard-Jones-type lamellar interaction potential into an entropy-based statistical physics model of the lamellar phase of nanosheets. Our work shows that the precise cation exchange produced at room temperature by a classical neutralization reaction using alkaline bases leads to a crystal-like restacking of the exfoliated free Sb3P2O143- nanosheets from suspension, avoiding the turbostratic disorder typical of van der Waals 2D materials, which is detrimental to the controlled deposition of nanosheets into complex integrated electronic, spintronic, photonic or quantum structures.

Charge-driven liquid-crystalline behavior of ligand-functionalized nanorods in apolar solvent. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. E, SOFT MATTER 2023; 46:86. Abstract
Concentrated colloidal suspensions of nanorods often exhibit liquid-crystalline (LC) behavior. The transition to a nematic LC phase, with long-range orientational order of the particles, is usually well-captured by Onsager's theory for hard rods, at least qualitatively. The theory shows how the volume fraction at the transition decreases with increasing aspect ratio of the rods. It also explains that the long-range electrostatic repulsive interaction occurring between rods stabilized by their surface charge can significantly increase their effective diameter, resulting in a decrease in the volume fraction at the transition, as compared to sterically stabilized rods. Here, we report on a system of ligand-stabilized LaPO4 nanorods, of aspect ratio ≈ 11, dispersed in apolar medium exhibiting the counter-intuitive observation that the onset of nematic self-assembly occurs at an extremely low volume fraction of ≈ 0.25%, which is lower than observed (≈ 3%) with the same particles when charged-stabilized in polar solvent. Furthermore, the nanorod volume fraction at the transition increases with increasing concentration of ligands, in a similar way as in polar media where increasing the ionic strength leads to surface charge screening. This peculiar system was investigated by dynamic light scattering, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, zetametry, electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy, photoluminescence measurements, and X-ray scattering. Based on these experimental data, we formulate several tentative scenarios that might explain this unexpected phase behavior. However, at this stage, its full understanding remains a pending theoretical challenge. Nevertheless, this study shows that dispersing anisotropic nanoparticles in an apolar solvent may sometimes lead to spontaneous ordering events that defy our intuitive ideas about colloidal systems.

EXPLORING LINGUISTIC PATTERNS ON A STORY RECALL TASK IN PEOPLE WITH MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. Innov Aging 2022. Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) involves declines in language and episodic memory. Episodic memory is often assessed using language tasks. To prevent linguistic factors from confounding recall scores, memory and language should be jointly examined. We explored linguistic patterns on a story recall task among cognitively healthy adults aged 65+ (n=18) and people with amnestic MCI (n=18). Participants completed immediate and delayed (20-30min) recall on a set of novel story recall materials (6 pairs, i.e., 12 stories total). Stories were coded using a propositional coding scheme (where a proposition refers to the smallest unit of meaning), as well as a unit scoring scheme (i.e., individual words). Responses were coded as veridical (word-for-word), gist (general idea), and distortion (error). Linguistic features of the output were coded using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program. Overall, people with MCI produced more verbs, fewer time-related words, and fewer total words than control participants. In the MCI group, delayed unit- and proposition-based veridical and gist recall scores were positively correlated with certainty and causation words, indicating that higher certainty about events and their causal links is associated with better memory. Total words were positively correlated with all immediate and delayed recall scores, indicating that amount of linguistic output is strongly linked to memory in MCI. Time-related words were positively correlated with immediate unit-based veridical recall, suggesting that, in MCI, more words denoting time signal better immediate recall of story details. Examining linguistic features of verbal output in memory tasks could improve detection of MCI.

Abstract
Bottom-up strategies for the production of well-defined nanostructures often rely on the self-assembly of anisotropic colloidal particles (nanowires and nanosheets). These building blocks can be obtained by delamination in a solvent of low-dimensionality crystallites. To optimize particle availability, determination of the delamination mechanism and the different organization stages of anisotropic particles in dispersion is essential. We address this fundamental issue by exploiting a recently developed system of fluorohectorite smectite clay mineral that delaminates in water, leading to colloidal dispersions of single-layer, very large (≈20 μm) clay sheets at high dilution. We show that when the clay crystallites are dispersed in water, they swell to form periodic one-dimensional stacks of fluorohectorite sheets with very low volume fraction (<1%) and therefore huge (≈100 nm) periods. Using optical microscopy and synchrotron X-ray scattering, we establish that these colloidal stacks bear strong similarities, yet subtle differences, with a smectic liquid-crystalline phase. Despite the high dilution, the colloidal stacks of sheets, called colloidal accordions, are extremely robust mechanically and can persist for years. Moreover, when subjected to AC electric fields, they rotate as solid bodies, which demonstrates their outstanding internal cohesion. Furthermore, our theoretical model captures the dependence of the stacking period on the dispersion concentration and ionic strength and explains, invoking the Donnan effect, why the colloidal accordions are kinetically stable over years and impervious to shear and Brownian motion. Because our model is not system specific, we expect that similar colloidal accordions frequently appear as an intermediate state during the delamination process of two-dimensional crystals in polar solvents.

Abstract
Biological amphiphiles derived from natural resources are presently being investigated in the hope that they will someday replace current synthetic surfactants, which are known pollutants of soils and water resources. Sophorolipids constitute one of the main classes of glycosylated biosurfactants that have attracted interest because they are synthesized by non-pathogenic yeasts from glucose and vegetable oils at high titers. In this work, the self-assembly properties of several sophorolipids in water at high concentrations (20-80 wt %), a range so far mostly uncharted, have been investigated by polarized-light microscopy and X-ray scattering. Some of these compounds were found to show lyotropic liquid-crystalline behavior as they display lamellar or hexagonal columnar mesophases. X-ray scattering data shows that the structure of the lamellar phase is almost fully interdigitated, which is likely due to the packing difference between the bulky hydrophilic tails and the more compact aliphatic chains. A tentative representation of the molecular organization of the columnar phase is also given. Moreover, some of these compounds display thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior, either pure or in aqueous mixtures. In addition, small domains of the lamellar phase can easily be aligned by applying onto them a moderate a.c. electric field, which is a rather unusual feature for lyotropic liquid crystals. Altogether, our work explored the self-assembly liquid-crystalline behavior of sophorolipids at high concentration, which could shed light on the conditions of their potential industrial applications as well as on their biological function.

Fine tuning the structural colours of photonic nanosheet suspensions by polymer doping. SOFT MATTER 2021; 17:9280-9292. Abstract
Aqueous suspensions of nanosheets are readily obtained by exfoliating low-dimensional mineral compounds like H3Sb3P2O14. The nanosheets self-organize, at low concentration, into a periodic stack of membranes, i.e. a lamellar liquid-crystalline phase. Due to the dilution, this stack has a large period of a few hundred nanometres, it behaves as a 1-dimensional photonic material and displays structural colours. We experimentally investigated the dependence of the period on the nanosheet concentration. We theoretically showed that it cannot be explained by the usual DLVO interaction between uniform lamellae but that the particulate nature of nanosheet-laden membranes must be considered. Moreover, we observed that adding small amounts of 100 kDa poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) decreases the period and allows tuning the colour throughout the visible range. PEO adsorbs on the nanosheets, inducing a strong reduction of the nanosheet charge. This is probably due to the Lewis-base character of the EO units of PEO that become protonated at the low pH of the system, an interpretation supported by theoretical modeling. Oddly enough, adding small amounts of 1 MDa PEO has the opposite effect of increasing the period, suggesting the presence of an additional intermembrane repulsion not yet identified. From an applied perspective, our work shows how the colours of these 1-dimensional photonic materials can easily be tuned not only by varying the nanosheet concentration (which might entail a phase transition) but also by adding PEO. From a theoretical perspective, our approach represents a necessary step towards establishing the phase diagram of aqueous suspensions of charged nanosheets.

Abstract
Imparting liquid-crystal (LC) materials with the plasmonic properties of metal nanoparticles is actively pursued for applications. We achieved this goal by synthetizing gold nanoparticles onto clay nanosheets, leading to nematic nanocomposite suspensions. Optical observations and structural analysis show the growth of the gold nanoparticles without altering the LC properties of the nanosheets. These colloids display plasmonic structural colours and they can be aligned by an electric field, which is relevant for fundamental and materials chemistry of colloidal LC.

Abstract
Complex aqueous mixtures comprised of swelling clays and hydrosoluble polymers naturally occur in soils and play a major role in pedogenesis. They are also very often used for formulating oil-well drilling fluids, paints, and personal-care products. The suspensions of some natural clays, thanks to their large nanoparticle aspect ratio, spontaneously form nematic liquid-crystalline phases where the particles align parallel to each other, which affects their flow properties. We observed that adding small amounts of hydrosoluble polymers to these clay suspensions destabilizes the nematic phase with respect to the isotropic (disordered) phase. The polymers that we used (poly(ethylene oxide) and dextran) were too small to adopt particle-bridging conformations and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments showed that the structure of the nematic phase is not altered by polymer doping. However, the adsorption isotherm shows that the macromolecules adsorb onto the clay nanosheets, effectively coating them with a polymer layer. Our extension of Onsager's theory for polymer-coated platelets properly captures the experimental phase diagram and shows how the nematic phase destabilization can be due to the polymer adsorbing more on the platelet faces than at the rim. Because the flow properties of the nematic phase are very different from those of the isotropic phase, the presence or absence of the former phase is an important factor to be determined and considered to explain the rheological behavior of these complex systems.

Abstract
Although the existence of the twist-bend (NTB) and splay-bend (NSB) nematic phases was predicted long ago, only the former has as yet been observed experimentally, whereas the latter remains elusive. This is especially disappointing because the NSB nematic is promising for applications in electro-optic devices. By applying an electric field to a planar cell filled with the compound CB7CB, we have found an NTB-NSB phase transition using birefringence measurements. This field-induced transition to the biaxial NSB occurred, although the field was applied along the symmetry axis of the macroscopically uniaxial NTB Therefore, this transition is a counterintuitive example of breaking of the macroscopic uniaxial symmetry. We show by theoretical modeling that the transition cannot be explained without considering explicitly the biaxiality of both phases at the microscopic scale. This strongly suggests that molecular biaxiality should be a key factor favoring the stability of the NSB phase.

Abstract
Zinc-blende CdSe semiconducting nanoplatelets (NPL) show outstanding quantum confinement properties thanks to their small, atomically-controlled, thickness. For example, they display extremely sharp absorption peaks and ultra-fast recombination rates that make them very interesting objects for optoelectronic applications. However, the presence of a ground-state electric dipole for these nanoparticles has not yet been investigated. We therefore used transient electric birefringence (TEB) to probe the electric dipole of 5-monolayer thick zinc blende CdSe NPL with a parallelepipedic shape. We studied a dilute dispersion of isolated NPL coated with branched ligands and we measured, as a function of time, the birefringence induced by DC and AC field pulses. The electro-optic behavior proves the presence of a large dipolar moment (>245 D) oriented along the length of the platelets. We then induced the slow face-to-face stacking of the NPL by adding oleic acid. In these stacks, the in-plane dipole components of consecutive NPL cancel whereas their normal components add. Moreover, interestingly, the excess polarizability tensor of the NPL stacks gives rise to an electro-optic contribution opposite to that of the electric dipole. By monitoring the TEB signal of the slowly-growing stacks over up to a year, we extracted the evolution of their average length with time and we showed that their electro-optic response can be explained by the presence of a 80 D dipolar component parallel to their normal. In spite of the 4[combining macron]3m space group of bulk zinc blende CdSe, these NPL thus bear an important ground-state dipole whose magnitude per unit volume is twice that found for wurtzite CdSe nanorods. We discuss the possible origin of this electric dipole, its consequences for the optical properties of these nanoparticles, and how it could explain their strong stacking propensity that severely hampers their colloidal stability.

Abstract
The design of high-performance energy-converting materials is an essential step for the development of sensors, but the production of the bulk materials currently used remains costly and difficult. Therefore, a different approach based on the self-assembly of nanoparticles has been explored. We report on the preparation by solvothermal synthesis of highly crystalline CeF3 nanodiscs. Their surface modification by bisphosphonate ligands led to stable, highly concentrated, colloidal suspensions in water. Despite the low aspect ratio of the nanodiscs (∼6), a liquid-crystalline nematic phase spontaneously appeared in these colloidal suspensions. Thanks to the paramagnetic character of the nanodiscs, the nematic phase was easily aligned by a weak (0.5 T) magnetic field, which provides a simple and convenient way of orienting all of the nanodiscs in suspension in the same direction. Moreover, the more dilute, isotropic, suspensions displayed strong (electric and magnetic) field-induced orientation of the nanodiscs (Kerr and Cotton-Mouton effects), with fast enough response times to make them suitable for use in electro-optic devices. Furthermore, an emission study showed a direct relation between the luminescence intensity and magnetic-field-induced orientation of the colloids. Finally, with their fast radiative recombination decay rates, the nanodiscs show luminescence properties that compare quite favorably with those of bulk CeF3. Therefore, these CeF3 nanodiscs are very promising building blocks for the development and processing of photosensitive materials for sensor applications.

Abstract
Accurate quantification of sources of phosphorus (P) entering the environment is essential for the management of aquatic ecosystems. P fluxes from mains water leakage (MWL-P) have recently been identified as a potentially significant source of P in urbanised catchments. However, both the temporal dynamics of this flux and the potential future significance relative to P fluxes from wastewater treatment works (WWT-P) remain poorly constrained. Using the River Thames catchment in England as an exemplar, we present the first quantification of both the seasonal dynamics of current MWL-P fluxes and future flux scenarios to 2040, relative to WWT-P loads and to P loads exported from the catchment. The magnitude of the MWL-P flux shows a strong seasonal signal, with pipe burst and leakage events resulting in peak P fluxes in winter (December, January, February) that are >150% of fluxes in either spring (March, April, May) or autumn (September, October, November). We estimate that MWL-P is equivalent to up to 20% of WWT-P during peak leakage events. Winter rainfall events control temporal variation in both WWT-P and riverine P fluxes which consequently masks any signal in riverine P fluxes associated with MWL-P. The annual average ratio of MWL-P flux to WWT-P flux is predicted to increase from 15 to 38% between 2015 and 2040, associated with large increases in P removal at wastewater treatment works by 2040 relative to modest reductions in mains water leakage. However, further research is required to understand the fate of MWL-P in the environment. Future P research and management programmes should more fully consider MWL-P and its seasonal dynamics, alongside the likely impacts of this source of P on water quality.

Abstract
Exploring the interaction of nucleic acids with clay minerals is important to understand such issues as the persistence in soils of biomolecules and the appearance of genetic polymers in prebiotic environments. Colloidal dispersions of double stranded DNA and clay nanosheets may also provide interesting model systems to study the statistical physics of mixtures of semi-flexible rods and plates. Here, we show that adding very small amounts of DNA to liquid-crystalline montmorillonite and beidellite smectite clay suspensions strongly widens the isotropic/nematic phase coexistence region. Moreover, a spectroscopic study shows that, upon DNA addition, the first DNA molecules adsorb onto the clay particles. Remarkably, synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering experiments reveal that the average distance between the clay sheets, in the nematic phase at coexistence, decreases with increasing DNA concentration and that the inhibition of swelling by DNA becomes almost independent of clay concentration. We interpret this DNA-mediated attraction between clay nanosheets by bridging conformations of DNA strands (plates on a string structure). In addition to bridging, DNA chains can form “loops” between sections adsorbed on the same particle, giving rise to sheet repulsions due to protruding loops. This interpretation agrees with the observed inter-clay spacings being dependent only on the DNA concentration.

Abstract
We designed a nanocomposite consisting of CdSe nanoplatelets dispersed in the form of short stacks in the polybutadiene domains of a polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene (SBS) thermoplastic elastomer matrix. Under strain, the material displays reversible, macroscopic anisotropic properties, e.g. the fluorescence signal. We present here a structural study of the composite under stretching, by in situ high-resolution X-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation. Modelling the scattering signal allows us to monitor the evolution of both the matrix and the platelets under strain. In particular, we show that the strain "reshuffles" the platelet stacks, which tilt their long axis from parallel to the plane of the microstructure lamellae at rest to perpendicular to this plane at high strain, at the same time breaking into smaller pieces, more easily accommodated in the soft butadiene domains. This reshuffling is fully reversed after strain relaxation. Moreover, it can be prevented by adding free oleic acid, which reinforces the interactions between the platelets in the stacks.

Abstract
Colloidal suspensions of anisotropic nanoparticles can spontaneously self-organize in liquid-crystalline phases beyond some concentration threshold. These phases often respond to electric and magnetic fields. At lower concentrations, usual isotropic liquids are observed but they can display very strong Kerr and Cotton-Mouton effects (i.e., field-induced particle orientation). For many examples of these colloidal suspensions, the solvent is water, which hinders most electro-optic applications. Here, for goethite (α-FeOOH) nanorod dispersions, we show that water can be replaced by polar aprotic solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), without loss of colloidal stability. By polarized-light microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering and electro-optic measurements, we found that the nematic phase, with its field-response properties, is retained. Moreover, a strong Kerr effect was also observed with isotropic goethite suspensions in these polar aprotic solvents. Furthermore, we found no significant difference in the behavior of both the nematic and isotropic phases between the aqueous and non-aqueous dispersions. Our work shows that goethite nanorod suspensions in polar aprotic solvents, suitable for electro-optic applications, can easily be produced and that they keep all their outstanding properties. It also suggests that this solvent replacement method could be extended to the aqueous colloidal suspensions of other kinds of charged anisotropic nanoparticles.

Ligand-induced twisting of nanoplatelets and their self-assembly into chiral ribbons. SCIENCE ADVANCES 2017; 3:e1701483. Abstract
The emergence of chirality is a central issue in chemistry, materials science, and biology. In nanoparticle assemblies, chirality has been shown to arise through a few different processes, but chiral organizations composed of plate-like nanoparticles, a class of material under scrutiny due to their wide applicative potential, have not yet been reported. We show that ribbons of stacked board-shaped cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoplatelets (NPLs) twist upon the addition of oleic acid ligand, leading to chiral ribbons that reach several micrometers in length and display a well-defined pitch of ~400 nm. We demonstrate that the chirality originates from surface strain caused by the ligand because isolated NPLs in dilute solution undergo a transition from a flat to a twisted shape as the ligand coverage increases. When the platelets are closely stacked within ribbons, the individual twist propagates over the whole ribbon length. These results show that a ligand-induced mechanical stress can strongly distort thin NPLs and that this stress can be expressed at a larger scale, paving the way to stress engineering in assemblies of nanocrystals. Such a structural change resulting from a simple external stimulus could have broad implications for the design of sensors and other responsive materials.

Abstract
The occurrence of new textures of liquid crystals is an important factor in tuning their optical and photonics properties. Here, we show, both experimentally and by numerical computation, that under an electric field chitin tactoids (i.e., nematic droplets) can stretch to aspect ratios of more than 15, leading to a transition from a spindlelike to a cigarlike shape. We argue that the large extensions occur because the elastic contribution to the free energy is dominated by the anchoring. We demonstrate that the elongation involves hydrodynamic flow and is reversible: the tactoids return to their original shapes upon removing the field.

Abstract
Janus nanoparticles bearing two different properties on a single particle are amenable to self-assembly into higher-order structures via their directional interaction. We show that gold/silica Janus nanoparticles self-assemble in solution into clusters resembling colloidal micelles upon addition of a hydrophobic thiol which provides them with a surface active amphiphilic character. As the nanoparticles spontaneously assemble, the color of the solution evolves due to the coupling of the surface plasmons. Time resolved spectrophotometry in the visible and near-infrared ranges coupled to simulations were used to probe the assembly process. A singular value decomposition analysis reveals the presence of dimers as transient species. The structure of the clusters was probed using small angle X-ray revealing that the Janus nanoparticles assemble into clusters containing a few particles.

Abstract
Colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets are considered to be excellent candidates for many applications in nanotechnology. One of the current challenges is to self-assemble these colloidal quantum wells into large ordered structures to control their collective optical properties. We describe a simple and robust procedure to achieve controlled face-to-face self-assembly of CdSe nanoplatelets into micron-long polymer-like threads made of up to ∼1000 particles. These structures are formed by addition of oleic acid to a stable colloidal dispersion of platelets, followed by slow drying and re-dispersion. We could control the average length of the CdSe nanoplatelet threads by varying the amount of added oleic acid. These 1-dimensional structures are flexible and feature a "living polymer" character because threads of a given length can be further grown through the addition of supplementary nanoplatelets at their reactive ends.

Hypertension: What are the self-care and health-care-seeking behaviours in women over time? J Hum Hypertens 2016; 30:783-787. Abstract
The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and incidence of hypertension in women, and describe their self-care and health-seeking behaviours. This research was conducted as part of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, a study comprising a nationally representative sample of Australian women in three age groups. The focus of this research is 14 099 women born in 1946-1951, who have been surveyed six times (1996-2010). Student t-tests were used to compare women who did or did not have hypertension by their health-care utilization. Longitudinal analyses were conducted using a Poisson generalized estimating equation model. The incidence of hypertension among this cohort during 1996 to 2010 ranged from 400 to 597 participants per survey, resulting in an increase in prevalence of hypertension from 20.9% in 1996 to 41.3% in 2010. For all survey periods, women with hypertension had a significantly higher average number of visits to doctors and allied health practitioners compared with women without hypertension (P<0.005). The use of complementary medicine (practitioners and self-prescribed treatments) by women with hypertension was significantly lower compared to women without hypertension (P<0.005). Over time, conventional health-care utilization was higher for women with hypertension compared with women without hypertension (adjusted RR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.14, 1.22; P<0.0001). Our findings show that women with hypertension are using a range of conventional and complementary and alternative medicine: with hypertensive women using more conventional medicine and less complementary and alternative medicine than non-hypertensive women. As such, health-care providers should communicate with their patients regarding their use of complementary and alternative medicine in their efforts to provide safe, effective and coordinate care.

Abstract
A light-induced Soret effect accompanied by photoinduced adsorption of pigment nanoparticles is described in organic solvents. We report an unexpected inversion of the nanoparticle flux which is directed along the temperarture gradient at short exposures to the light and switches against the gradient at longer exposures. This change of flux direction is due to light-induced adsorption of the nanocrystals onto the substrates of the cell.
