Moving from adaptation capacities to implementing adaptation to extreme heat events in urban areas of the European Union: Introducing the U-ADAPT! research approach

Extreme Heat Events (EHE) are a major concern for many urban areas worldwide and are considered as one of the deadliest natural hazards globally. Climate change and socioeconomic trends (exposure and susceptibility) are expected to exacerbate the risk of urban heat stress. Several urban areas have recently declared a climate emergency and initiated the adaptation process, but progress is still patchy, uncoordinated, and of varied quality. The main constraint is the lack of mechanisms for monitoring and reporting adaptation strategies, not allowing the supervision and evaluation of the adaptation process. The EU-funded project U-ADAPT! (Urban-Adaptation) focuses on the concrete expression of adaptation to evaluate the current implementation and effectiveness of adaptation measures and strategies to reduce Heat Disaster Risk (HDR), moving the emphasis from the study of vulnerability, resilience, and potential adaptation (adaptation capacity) of communities to the actual depth and pace of the past and current adaptation process. In this article, we discuss the theoretical support and design of the project and set the base for next project stages, which ultimately aims to create a unique interdisciplinary framework and a replicable multidimensional indicator on adaptation to EHE that empower European Union citizens to demand a safe and sustainable environment and hold institutions accountable for the adaptation process to current and upcoming risks.

Risk Perceptions on Hurricanes: Evidence from the U.S. Stock Market

This article examines the market reaction of the main Property and Casualty (P & C) insurance companies listed in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to seven most recent hurricanes that hit the East Coast of the United States from 2005 to 2012. For this purpose, we run a standard short horizon event study in order to test the existence of abnormal returns around the landfalls. P & C companies are one of the most affected sectors by such events because of the huge losses to rebuild, help and compensate the inhabitants of the affected areas. From the financial investors' perception, this kind of events implies severe losses, which could influence the expected returns. Our research highlights the existence of significant cumulative abnormal returns around the landfall event window in most of the hurricanes analyzed, except for the Katrina and Sandy Hurricanes.

Monitoring volatile compounds production throughout fermentation by Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces strains using headspace sorptive extraction

Currently, there is a growing interest in the use of non-Saccharomyces yeast to enhance the aromatic quality of wine, with pure or mixed cultures, as well as sequential inoculation. Volatile components of wines were closely related to their sensory quality. Hence, to study the evolution of volatile compounds during fermentation was of great interest. For this, sampling methods that did not alter the volume of fermentation media were the most suitable. This work reports the usefulness of headspace sorptive extraction as non-invasive method to monitor the changes in volatile compounds during fermentation. This method allowed monitoring of 141 compounds throughout the process of fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lachancea thermotolerans strains. Both strains showed a similar ability to ferment a must with high sugar content. The S. cerevisiae strain produced higher amount of volatile compounds especially esters that constitutes fruity aroma than L. thermotorelans.

Participatory Methods for Water Resources Planning

The Water Framework Directive institutionalises participatory processes in river basin planning across the European Union. This paper reports on three case studies from southern Europe where conflicts over water exist. In each a different method for participation was experimentally employed: scenario workshops, mediated modelling, and social multicriteria evaluation. Scenario workshops and mediated modelling proved well suited to the early stages of a planning process (problem solving and identification of goals and alternatives) and to be good at educating participants and supporting capacity building. Their performance was less satisfactory with respect to resolving long-standing conflicts and achieving consensus. In comparison, social multicriteria evaluation was better able to address the evaluation of alternatives, reveal trade-offs, and aid convergence between divergent stakeholders' views, but it relied more heavily on experts and allowed less participation and deliberation in goal-setting than the other two methods. These results show complementarities amongst methods which imply that hybrid or combined approaches would be best for aiding the water planning process. They also reveal problems confronting the use of participatory approaches and constraints which prevent theoretical promise from being converted into practical results.

Volatile and sensory profile of organic red wines produced by different selected autochthonous and commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains

Organic wines were produced at pilot scale to select the best autochthonous and commercial yeast strains to obtain wines with high organoleptic qualities. We tested the behaviour of five S. cerevisiae yeast strains and determined their volatile composition and organoleptic characteristics by sensory analysis. A total of 51 volatile compounds were quantified in the wines produced. The concentration of most of the volatile compounds was significantly influenced depending on which yeast strain was inoculated. The differences observed in the volatile composition of the wines appear to be quantitative rather than qualitative. In general, acetals were the most abundant group of volatile compounds in all the samples studied, followed by alcohols without ethanol. The highest contents of volatile compounds were found in two of the wines produced by autochthonous yeast strains. The results obtained in the sensory analysis suggest that autochthonous yeast produced wines of higher organoleptic quality because this sample gave the highest value for the general impression attribute.
