Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been regarded as green solvents in the biorefinery of lignocellulosic biomass, but long duration time has severely limited efficiency. The microwave-assisted DES pretreatment along with enzymatic hydrolysis and high-pressure homogenization process was proposed to produce lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) from corncob. Benefiting from microwave-assisted DES pretreatment, the duration time was greatly shortened; meanwhile the effects of different kinds of DES on the resultant LCNF were investigated. The results showed that, the microwave-assisted DES fabricated LCNF (M-LCNF) was successfully obtained, exhibiting good nano size, thermal stability, colloidal stability, and fluorescence. M-LCNF was further introduced into phytic acid (PA) enhanced poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AA)) network and constructed composite conductive hydrogels (PLP). The obtained hydrogels exhibited good mechanical strength, UV blocking ability, fluorescence, and conductivity. A simple battery assembled with the resultant PLP as electrolyte had an out voltage of 2.41 V. The composite conductive hydrogel showed good sensing performance towards different stimuli (e.g., stretching and compression) and human motions in real time. It is expected that this research would provide an alternative way for green fabrication of LCNF and potential application of LCNF in flexible sensors.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass exhibits a promising potential for production of carbon materials. Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,P-CQDs) were fabricated via (NH4)2HPO4 assisted hydrothermal treatment of cellulose pulp fibers. The as-prepared N,P-CQDs were characterized by HRTEM, FTIR, fluorescence and UV-vis, and then incorporated into g-C3N4 (CN) through sonication and liquid deposition, forming N,P-CQDs/sonication treated g-C3N4 (C-SCN) composites, which were then explored as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic ability of C-SCN towards model lignin was further analyzed. The results showed that, the fluorescence intensity and photoluminescence performance of N,P-CQDs were much higher than that of CQDs; the heterojunction was successfully constructed between the composites of N,P-CQDs and SCN; the incorporation of N,P-CQDs enhanced the visible light absorption, but reduced the band gap of the composite heterojunction; the resultant photocatalysts exhibited a good photocatalytic ability of model lignin via catalyze the fracture of β-O-4' ether bond and CC bond, i.e., the photocatalytic degradation ratio reached up to 95.5 %; and the photocatalytic reaction generated some valuable organics such as phenyl formate, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid. This study would promote the high value-added utilization of lignocellulosic resources especially in the transformation of lignin, conforming the concept of sustainable development.

Abstract
1. The bioflavonoid quercetin is a biologically active component, but its functional regulation of granulosa cells (GCs) during chicken follicular development is little studied. To investigate the effect of quercetin on follicular development in laying hens, an in vitro study was conducted on granulosa cells from hierarchical follicles treated with quercetin.2. The effect of quercetin on cell activity, proliferation and apoptosis of granulosa cells was detected by CCK-8, EdU and apoptosis assays. The effect on progesterone secretion from granulosa cells was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) mRNA and oestrogen receptors (ERs), as well as the expression of steroid acute regulatory protein (StAR), cytochrome P450 cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc) and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) mRNA during progesterone synthesis, were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). PCNA, StAR and CYP11A1 protein expression levels were detected using Western blotting (WB).3. The results showed that treatment with quercetin in granulosa cells significantly enhanced cell vitality and proliferation, reduced apoptosis and promoted the expression of gene and protein levels of PCNA. The levels of progesterone secretion increased significantly following quercetin treatment, as did the expression levels of StAR and CYP11A1 using the Western Blot (WB) method.4. The mRNA expression levels of ERα were significantly upregulated in the 100 ng/ml and 1000 ng/ml quercetin-treated groups, while there was no significant difference in expression levels of ERβ mRNA.

Abstract
Lignin is the most abundant natural aromatic macromolecule in the nature, but its high value-added utilization has been seriously hindered by the highly random and branched structures and the high difficulty in separation and purification. A microwave-assisted ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed by formic acid, lactic acid and choline chloride was developed for lignin pretreatment. The effects of three types of DES on main characteristics of lignin were investigated, and the corresponding dissolution mechanism was proposed. The results showed that, the microwave-assisted ternary DES pretreatment showed an obvious improvement on main characteristics of regenerated lignin, e.g., a higher purity, lower molecular weight with reduced dispersity, improved thermal stability, higher phenolic hydroxyl content, and increased antioxidative activity in comparison with control. It is expected that the lignin macromolecular can be facile regulated and upgraded by the proposed ternary DES.

Abstract
Ferroptosis is a kind of iron-dependent renewal programmed death. Its main mechanism is to catalyze the unsaturated fatty acids highly expressed on the cell membrane under the effect of divalent iron, to produce lipid peroxidation, thus inducing cell death. SLC7A11 is a known iron death-related factor. It has been proved that iron death is involved in the occurrence and development of acute diseases, but the specific mechanism is unknown. The purpose of this review is to highlight the regulatory properties of SLC7A11 and gain a deeper understanding of its role in ferroptosis-related acute injury diseases. This is a narrative review. PubMed was used as the main source to randomly implement literature search strategy to index Scopus articles. No specific terms are used. Studies have shown that SLC7A11 may affect the sensitivity of cells to iron ptosis by regulating it at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level, which is related to the pathology of many acute injury diseases, such as acute lung injury (ALI), acute kidney injury (AKI), acute liver injury, myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, and acute cerebral hemorrhage. In order to clarify this point, more and more researchers turn their attention to the study of the specific mechanism between SLC7A11 and ferroptosis-related acute injury diseases. In summary, this review summarized some specific mechanisms by which ferroptosis could be controlled by SLC7A11 and clarified the underlying mechanisms of a series of diseases caused by SLC7A11-associated ferroptosis. It also provided more scientific justification for the clinical application of targeting ferroptosis in preventing and treating various diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of Wendler Glottoplasty to elevate vocal pitch in transgender women. Methods: The voice parameters of pre-and 3-month post-surgery of 29 transgender women who underwent Wendler Glottoplasty in department of otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery of Beijing Friendship Hospital from January, 2017 to October, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The 29 transgender women ranged in age from 19-47 (27.0±6.3) years old. Subjective evaluation was performed using Transsexual Voice Questionnaire for Male to Female (TVQMtF). Objective parameters included fundamental frequency (F0), highest pitch, lowest pitch, habitual volume, Jitter, Shimmer, maximal phonation time (MPT), noise to harmonic ratio (NHR) and formants frequencies(F1, F2, F3, F4). SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistically analysis. Results: Three months after surgery, the score of TVQMtF was significantly decreased [(89.9±14.7) vs. (50.4±13.6), t=11.49, P<0.001]. The F0 was significantly elevated [(152.7±23.3) Hz vs. (207.7±45.9) Hz, t=-6.03, P<0.001]. Frequencies of F1, F2 and F3 were significantly elevated. No statistical difference was observed in the frequencies of F4. The highest pitch was not significantly altered while the lowest pitch was significantly elevated [(96.8±17.7) Hz vs. (120.0±28.9) Hz, t=-3.71, P=0.001]. Habitual speech volume was significantly increased [(60.0±5.2) dB vs. (63.6±9.6) dB, t=-2.12, P=0.043]. Jitter, Shimmer, NHR and MPT were not obviously altered (P>0.05). Conclusions: Wendler Glottoplasty could notably elevate the vocal pitch, formants frequencies and degree of vocal femininity in transgender women without affecting phonation ability and voice quality. It can be an effective treatment modality for voice feminization.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degrading pollutants driven by visible-light irradiation has attracted tremendous attention. One strategy of preparing carbonized cellulose nanofibrils/Ti3C2Tx MXene/g-C3N4 (CMCN) as a photocatalyst was developed. The as-prepared CMCN was comprehensively characterized in terms of the chemical composition, chemical and crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrochemical properties. The CMCN was explored as a photocatalyst and exhibited good photocatalytic performance in degrading MB (96.5%), RhB (95.4%), and TC (86.5%) under visible-light conditions. In addition, the CMCN as a photocatalyst exhibited good reusability and stability. It is found that the incorporation of cellulose nanofibrils provided a high carbon content, a high porosity, and a large specific surface area, enhanced the electron transfer, improved the photocatalytic performance, and ensured a semiconductor with a high stability. It is believed that this study would provide an effective approach to preparing a photocatalyst and broaden the potential application of cellulose nanofibrils in photocatalysis.

Abstract
BackgroundSPI-62 is a potent 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD-1) inhibitor entering Phase 2 development as adjunctive therapy to prednisolone in polymyalgia rheumatica, as well as for treatment of Cushing’s syndrome and autonomous cortisol secretion. HSD-1, an intracellular enzyme, activates glucocorticoids in target tissues in which glucocorticoid medicines are associated with morbidity including liver, adipose, muscle, and skin. In Phase 1 clinical trials SPI-62 was generally well tolerated and associated with maximal liver and brain HSD-1 inhibition.ObjectivesTo demonstrate mitigation by SPI-62 of corticosterone (CORT) adverse effects in mouse.MethodsC57BL/6 male mice (age 7 weeks; n=14 per group) were administered CORT (100 g/mL in drinking water) and SPI-62 (by gavage in 0.5% HPMC; 0, 1, or 10 mg/kg/day or 10 mg/kg twice daily) for 35 days. A control group received no CORT or SPI-62. Body weight was assessed daily and food consumption twice weekly. Whole body muscle and fat amounts were measured at Days 0, 14, and 28 using an EchoMRI-130H body composition analyzer. Blood samples for fasting glucose and insulin were obtained at Days 1 (pre-dose), 15, 29, and 35. An open field test was conducted on Day 22. A grip strength test was performed on Day 28. After sacrifice on Day 36, gonadal, subcutaneous, retroperitoneal, and mesenteric fat, quadriceps, and tibialis anterior were dissected and weighed, and skin was formalin fixed and paraffin embedded.ResultsOne control mouse died due to accidental gavage injury. Two mice who received CORT + 0.5% HPMC died on Days 11 and 19. CORT resulted in increased food consumption which was normalized by SPI-62 in a dose-dependent manner. CORT-treated mice showed reduced body weight gain for 2 weeks then accelerated body weight gain. SPI-62 prevented body weight gain acceleration in a dose-dependent manner. CORT effects on dermal thickness and structure were less prominent in mice who also received SPI-62. No effect of CORT or SPI-62 was observed in the open field test. SPI-62 prevented CORT adverse effects of insulin resistance, increased adiposity, skeletal myoatrophy, and grip strength reduction (Table 1).Table 1.Observed percentage difference of treatment group mean, compared to control group mean, in CORT-treated miceSPI-62 treatmentnone1 mg/kg1x/day10 mg/kg1x/day10 mg/kg2x/dayHOMA-IR Day 15+422+428+104+8HOMA-IR Day 29+788+472+204+14HOMA-IR Day 35+3620+1270+324+92Body fat content Day 14*+110+72-13-7Body fat content Day 28*+166+102+63-12Gonadal fat weight*+151+74+39-1Subcutaneous fat weight*+471+121+83+7Retroperitoneal fat weight*+227+89+36+25Mesenteric fat weight*+240+133+124+71Body muscle content Day 14*-10-70+1Body muscle content Day 28*-15-8-6+3Quadriceps weight*-54-43-24-16Tibialis anterior weight*-35-29-5+5Grip strength-12+16+15+26*Normalized by body weight.ConclusionSPI-62 prevented several CORT adverse effects in mouse, demonstrating that blockade of local intracellular glucocorticoid activation by a HSD-1 inhibitor in target tissues can mitigate glucocorticoid toxicity. These results suggest that SPI-62 has potential to similarly mitigate adverse effects of glucocorticoid medications in human. A placebo-controlled Phase 2 clinical trial has been initiated to compare prednisolone effects with and without SPI-62. Up to 48 patients diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica, on stable prednisolone 10 mg daily for at least 2 weeks, and with stable disease inactivity based on acute phase biomarkers will continue prednisolone 10 mg daily for 4 weeks, during which they will receive SPI-62 or placebo for 2 weeks each. Acute phase and other immune function biomarkers, symptom measures, and biomarkers of prednisolone adverse effects will be assessed at baseline and after each 2-week period. After analysis of data from a first cohort of 12 patients the prednisolone dose might be adjusted, in blinded fashion, during the SPI-62 period to maintain equipotency on acute phase biomarker suppression.Disclosure of InterestsXingyu Pan: None declared, Qiongqiong Hou: None declared, Jiahui Xu: None declared, Yake Ma: None declared, Jiawen Li: None declared, Min Li: None declared, Jing Su: None declared, Xuerou Shi: None declared, William Bracken Consultant of: Sparrow Pharmaceuticals, David Katz Shareholder of: Sparrow Pharmaceuticals, Employee of: Sparrow Pharmaceuticals

Abstract
Objective: To construct a novel prognostic nomogram model based on more comprehensive variables for patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods: The data of 722 patients with SCLC confirmed by pathology in Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from January 2015 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed [including 592 males and 130 females, aged from 23 to 82(61±9) years]. A random seed count of 133 was used to divide those patients into training set (n=422) and validation set (n=300). Kaplan-Meier was used for survival curves analysis and univariate Log-rank test was used for evaluating the influence of clinical variables on the prognosis of sclc, variables with P<0.05 in univariate analysis were included in a multivariate Cox regression model. The nomogram was constructed based on the variables which P<0.05 in multivariate analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration by Integrated Brier score (IBS) and clinical net benefit by decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate model discriminative power, prediction error value, and clinical net benefit, and compared with the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th TNM. Results: Male, abnormal monocyte (MON) counts, abnormal neuron specific enolase (NSE), abnormal cytokeratin 19 fragment (Cyfra211), M1a stage, M1b stage, M1c stage, radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy ≥4 cycles and prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) were prognostic factors for SCLC[HR(95%CI)=1.39(1.00-1.92), 1.29(1.02-1.63), 1.41(1.11-1.80), 2.02(1.48-2.76), 1.09(0.77-1.55), 1.44(0.94-2.22), 2.01(1.49-2.71), 0.75(0.57-0.98), 0.40(0.31-0.51)and 0.42(0.26-0.68), respectively, all P<0.05]. The area under ROC curve (AUC) of the nomogram in training set and validation set were 0.814(95%CI: 0.765-0.862)and 0.787 (95%CI: 0.725-0.849), which were higher than TNM [0.616(95%CI: 0.558-0.674) and 0.648(95%CI: 0.581-0.715)].The calibration curve showed a good correlation between the nomogram prediction and actual observation for the 2-year overall survival (OS). IBS indicted a lower prediction error rate (training set: 0.132 vs 0.169; validation set: 0.138 vs 0.169). DCA showed a wider threshold range than TNM (training set: 0.01-0.96 vs 0.01-0.85, validation set: 0.01-0.94 vs 0.01-0.86) and a greater improvement of the clinical net benefit (in training set the nomogram had a greater clinical benefit than TNM in the range of 0.19-0.96, and remained in validation set in the range of 0.19-0.94). Conclusion: The established nomogram model for predicting 2-year OS in patients with SCLC based on 8 variables, including gender, MON, NSE, Cyfra211, M stage, RT, CT cycles and PCI can be used for an more accurately prognosis prediction and reference for therapeutic regimen selection.

Abstract
As the promising anode material of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), SiO2 has high theoretical capacity, but the volume expansion severely hinders its application. To address the challenge, inspired by the highly flexible spider-web architecture, the SiO2@carbonized polyaniline/carbonized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (SiO2@cPANI/cTOCNFs) composite was designed, and fabricated via carbonizing the freeze-dried SiO2@PANI/TOCNFs. The resultant SiO2@cPANI/cTOCNFs composite exhibited unique spider-web-like nanostructures, providing a double-layer carbon network to protect SiO2 anode material. The results showed that, the SiO2@cPANI/cTOCNFs composite as anode material of LIBs offered a reversible capacity of 1103 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 after 200 cycles, and gave a capacity of 302 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1, exhibiting excellent cycling stability. This study provides a strategy of spider-web-inspired cellulose nanofibrils networking polyaniline-encapsulated silica nanoparticles as anode material of LIBs.

Abstract
An integration of different pretreatments is important to overcome recalcitrance and realize efficient bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass. This study aims at the effects of combination of hydrothermal pretreatment and different chemi-mechanical pretreatments on enzymatic hydrolysis, and understanding the enzymes adsorption mechanism. The combination of hydrothermal and chemi-mechanical pretreatments effectively improved the enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar substrates, in which the enzymatic hydrolysis of substrates pretreated by hydrothermal pretreatment + Fenton pretreatment + mechanical refining (HFM) was the highest (92.39% of glucose conversion yield, and 20.88 g/L of glucose concentration). The substrates' main characteristics were obviously changed after combined pretreatments, such as swelling ability and specific surface area of substrates were increased. The Langmuir adsorption model (R2 > 0.98) and pseudo second-order adsorption kinetic model (R2≈1) were well suitable to describe the adsorption of enzymes on substrates, meanwhile the adsorption mechanism was summarized.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass-derived nanocellulose has been attracting more and more attentions due to its distinguished advantages and various applications, but its development has been restricted by the preparation especially with environmental friendly approach. Herein, lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) was prepared from corncob via the combined pretreatment of choline chloride-based DES (ChCl-DES) and enzymatic hydrolysis followed by high-pressure homogenization. The effects of different types of ChCl-DES on the properties of LCNF were investigated and compared. The results showed that LCNF can be successfully fabricated through the combined pretreatments; the LCNF had an average diameter of 60-90 nm, exhibited good fluorescence, high thermal stability (up to 353 °C of Tmax), hydrophobicity, stability, and redispersibility in organic solvent; AC-LCNF showed well oriented arrangement, the highest hydrophobicity and fluorescence, and distinguished redispersibility especially in DMSO. ChCl-DES as one green and sustainable approach would realize efficient separation and high value-added utilization of agricultural residues.

Abstract
An efficient and low-cost approach to preparing CNFs with succinic acid hydrolysis and NaClO2 oxidation is explored. High-temperature-short-time hydrolysis can depolymerize the cellulose, whereas the dispersibility of the CNFs is hugely enhanced by NaClO2 oxidation under alkaline condition. The degradation of cellulose in succinic acid hydrolysis follows first-order reaction kinetics and is severely influenced by the hydrolysis temperature, moreover, the molecular chains of the cellulose are seriously cracked under the optimized condition. The NaClO2 oxidation greatly improves the zeta potential (-36.2 mV) and the dispersibility of the CNFs. The obtained CNFs have an ultimate yield of 94.6%, and the diameter distribution is mainly within 20-40 nm. In addition, some amount of carboxyl groups in the cellulose will be instead of the hydroxyl groups, and the crystallinity of the CNFs is significantly increased.

Abstract
The laccase/TEMPO system was employed to oxidise the C6 primary hydroxyl group on the chitosan (CS) to form a carboxyl group to obtain oxidised chitosan (C-COS). The silver-oxidised chitosan complex(C-COS-Ag) was prepared by reacting C-COS with silver nitrate, then C-COS-Ag and cotton fibres were subjected to a reaction to prepare bacteriostatic fibres. FT-IR and XPS analysis showed that: Ag+ and C-COS were combined in these forms: Ag, [Ag(NH3)2] OH, -COOAg, and Ag2O. C-COS-Ag was combined with cotton fibres by way of ester bonds. The inhibition zone of bacteriostatic fibres was all greater than 11 mm. After 50 washing tests, the bacteriostatic effect of bacteriostatic fibres remained at above 99 %. The amount of silver ions that had migrated from the bacteriostatic fibre was 3.336 mg/kg.

Abstract
Understanding the adsorption behavior and the interaction between substrates and enzymes are critical to improving enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency and reducing bioconversion cost. Herein, the adsorption of cellulase on wet ground corncob residues was studied, and the effects of main characteristics of wet ground corncob residues on adsorption capacity were quantitatively analyzed with the combination of principal component analysis and multiple linear regression models. The results showed that the adsorption of cellulase on wet ground corncob residues was fitted well with Langmuir isotherm adsorption and pseudo second-order kinetics model, the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity were greatly enhanced with increasing grinding time; the multiple linear regression models describing the relationship between main characteristics of corncob residues and adsorption capacity to cellulase were established; the significance of these characteristics were in the following order: average particle size, crystallinity index, specific surface area, surface lignin concentration, water retention value, and surface charge density.

Abstract
The combination of different pretreatment methods can effectively overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass to ensure its highly efficient conversion into bio-based products. In this study, the combined pretreatments of chemical methods (hydrothermal treatment and Fenton treatment) with mechanical refining were used to improve the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of poplar branches. The results indicated that hydrothermal pretreatment and Fenton pretreatment can effectively improve the enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar substrates, e.g., the maximum glucose conversion yield and glucose concentration reached 92.4% and 20.8 g/L, respectively. The pre-hydrolysates contained some valuable components such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, acetic acid, furfural, and hydroxymethylfurfural. The main characteristics (specific surface area, water retention value, fines content, and surface lignin concentration) of poplar substrates were obviously changed by the combined pretreatment, which benefit the enzymatic hydrolysis.

Abstract
Combining chemi-mechanical pulping with autohydrolysis pretreatment is an efficient and value-added utilization approach for lignocellulosic biomass in paper industry. To further promote the utilization of autohydrolyzed biomass in chemi-mechanical pulping, the color evolution of poplar wood chips in autohydrolysis pretreatment and its chromogenic mechanism were investigated by using CIELab color system, FT-IR, NMR and GPC. The results showed that the total color difference ΔE* increased obviously, which were remarkable as the combined hydrolysis factor (CHF) increased. The lignin content led to a more significant influence on the color of poplar wood chips than the extractives. The autohydrolysis pretreatment with a higher CHF accelerated the degradation and subsequent condensation of lignin, resulting in the formation of chromophoric groups, such as Hibbert ketone, quinones and quinone methides. It is of great significance for biomass refinery and paper industry to reveal the color evolution of poplar wood chips caused by autohydrolysis pretreatment from the point of view of chemical components' structure.

Abstract
Under the situation of increasingly severe challenge of energy consumption, it is of great importance to make full use of bioresources such as forestry and agricultural residues. Herein, the corncob residues generated after processing corncob were enzymatically hydrolyzed to yield fermentable sugars. To overcome the recalcitrance of corncob residues, three kinds of pretreatment methods, i.e., sulfonation, PFI refining, and wet grinding, were applied; their effects on enzymatic hydrolysis and main characteristics of corncob residues substrate were investigated. The results showed that the enzymatic digestibility of the substrate was greatly enhanced by employing each method. The wet grinding exhibited obvious advantages, e.g., the conversion yield of cellulose to glucose and glucose concentration reached 96.7% and 32.2 g/L after 59 h of enzymatic hydrolysis, respectively. The improvement in enzymatic hydrolysis was mainly attributed to the altered characteristics of the substrate such as swelling ability, specific surface area, and particle size and distribution.

Abstract
Chemi-mechanical pulping, a typical high-yield pulping method, combined with autohydrolysis pretreatment prior to pulping is an efficient and value-added utilization method for biomass in pulp and paper industry. This study investigated the surface lignin changes of poplar sapwood chips in autohydrolysis pretreatment and their effect on the subsequent alkali impregnation for chemi-mechanical pulping. The results showed that the surface lignin content went up with the increase of autohydrolysis intensity, and that the existence of the surface lignin had nearly no impact on the subsequent alkali impregnation in making chemi-mechanical pulps (CMPs) compared to the volume porosity, which was validated by using the stepwise regression analysis. It can be further concluded that autohydrolysis can facilitate the subsequent alkali impregnation of the autohydrolyzed sapwood chips in making CMP, which would be of significance for the combination of biomass refinery and pulp and paper industry.

Abstract
The presence of dyes in wastewater effluents made from the textile industry is a major environmental problem due to their complex structure and poor biodegradability. In this study, a cationic lignin polymer was synthesized via the free radical polymerization of lignin with [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC) and used to remove anionic azo-dyes (reactive black 5, RB5, and reactive orange 16, RO16) from simulated wastewater. The effects of pH, salt, and concentration of dyes, as well as the charge density and molecular weight of lignin-METAC polymer on dye removal were examined. Results demonstrated that lignin-METAC was an effective flocculant for the removal of dye via charge neutralization and bridging mechanisms. The dye removal efficiency of lignin-METAC polymer was independent of pH. The dosage of the lignin polymer required for reaching the maximum removal had a linear relationship with the dye concentration. The presence of inorganic salts including NaCl, NaNO₃, and Na₂SO₄ had a marginal effect on the dye removal. Under the optimized conditions, greater than 98% of RB5 and 94% of RO16 were removed at lignin-METAC concentrations of 120 mg/L and 105 mg/L in the dye solutions, respectively.

Abstract
An efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars depends greatly on the pretreatment of raw materials. In this study, a combination of dilute acid pre-extraction and chemical-assisted mechanical refining was used to pretreat wood lignocellulosic biomass for subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. This work analyzed the surface lignin concentration, specific surface area, crystallinity, fines content, fiber length, and kink index of the resultant pulp substrates and their effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis. The results showed that the combined pretreatment significantly enhanced the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency, and the maximum glucose conversion yield and glucose concentration were 93.32% and 21.41 g L−1, respectively. It is found that the surface lignin concentration, specific surface area, and fines content significantly affected the enzymatic hydrolysis. The combined pretreatment of dilute acid pre-extraction and mechanical refining significantly improved the enzymatic hydrolysis performance of lignocellulosic biomass.![]()

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Childhood arteriopathies are rare but heterogenous, and difficult to diagnose and classify, especially by nonexperts. We quantified clinical and imaging characteristics associated with childhood arteriopathy subtypes to facilitate their diagnosis and classification in research and clinical settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Vascular Effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) study prospectively enrolled 355 children with arterial ischemic stroke (2010-2014). A central team of experts reviewed all data to diagnose childhood arteriopathy and classify subtypes, including arterial dissection and focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type, which includes transient cerebral arteriopathy, Moyamoya disease, and diffuse/multifocal vasculitis. Only children whose stroke etiology could be conclusively diagnosed were included in these analyses. We constructed logistic regression models to identify characteristics associated with each arteriopathy subtype. RESULTS Among 127 children with definite arteriopathy, the arteriopathy subtype could not be classified in 18 (14%). Moyamoya disease (n = 34) occurred mostly in children younger than 8 years of age; focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type (n = 25), in children 8-15 years of age; and dissection (n = 26), at all ages. Vertigo at stroke presentation was common in dissection. Dissection affected the cervical arteries, while Moyamoya disease involved the supraclinoid internal carotid arteries. A banded appearance of the M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery was pathognomonic of focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type but was present in <25% of patients with focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type; a small lenticulostriate distribution infarct was a more common predictor of focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type, present in 76%. It remained difficult to distinguish focal cerebral arteriopathy-inflammatory type from intracranial dissection of the anterior circulation. We observed only secondary forms of diffuse/multifocal vasculitis, mostly due to meningitis. CONCLUSIONS Childhood arteriopathy subtypes have some typical features that aid diagnosis. Better imaging methods, including vessel wall imaging, are needed for improved classification of focal cerebral arteriopathy of childhood.

Abstract
LGR4, also known as GPR48, is a member of the leucine-rich, G protein-coupled receptor family. It is widely expressed in tissues of the reproductive system, urinary system, sensory organs, digestive system, and central nervous system. LGR4 plays an important role in the development of various organs and cancer development and progression by modulating multiple signaling pathways. Recent studies have revealed that LGR4 is related with many kinds of human diseases such as gastrointestinal carcinomas. Eye development is a dynamic process regulated by a number of growth factors and cytokines. LGR4 is extensively expressed in the eyes in a finely tuned spatiotemporal pattern. Mice lacking LGR4 have been found to display anterior segment dysgenesis, including microphthalmia, iris hypoplasia, iridocorneal angle malformation and corneal dysgenesis, cataract and other defects. Here we review the role of LGR4 in the eye development and related molecular mechanisms. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2017, 53: 236-240).

Abstract
Dilute acid pre-extraction enhanced the mechanically refined poplar pulp substrates' enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency obviously. The results showed that the surface lignin distribution was changed significantly in residual wood chips and pulp substrates, and the surface lignin distribution showed important impact on the following enzymatic hydrolysis. Acid pre-extraction can lead to a redistribution of lignin in fiber cell walls, i.e., the lignin was degraded and migrated to fiber surface in the form of re-deposited lignin and pseudo-lignin. However, higher pre-extraction intensity was not desired due to the formation of redeposited lignin and pseudo-lignin. This study will help to reach a deeper understanding on the lignin distribution in the view of molecular and ultrastructure, and promote the development of a cost-efficient pretreatment strategy for biomass processing.

Abstract
Recently single-cell whole-exome sequencing (scWES) has deeply expanded and sharpened our knowledge of cancer evolution and subclonality. Herein, with scWES and matched bulk whole-exome sequencing (bulk WES) on two colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with normal or adenomatous polyps, we found that both the adenoma and cancer were of monoclonal origin, and both shared partial mutations in the same signaling pathways, but each showed a specific spectrum of heterogeneous somatic mutations. In addition, the adenoma and cancer further developed intratumor heterogeneity with the accumulation of nonrandom somatic mutations specifically in GPCR, PI3K-Akt and FGFR signaling pathways. We identified novel driver mutations that developed during adenoma and cancer evolution, particularly in OR1B1 (GPCR signaling pathway) for adenoma evolution, and LAMA1 (PI3K-Akt signaling pathway) and ADCY3 (FGFR signaling pathway) for CRC evolution. In summary, we demonstrated that both colorectal adenoma and CRC are monoclonal in origin, and the CRCs further diversified into different subclones with heterogeneous mutation profiles accumulating in GPCR, PI3K-Akt and FGFR signaling pathways. ScWES provides evidence for the importance of mutations in certain pathways that would not be as apparent from bulk sequencing of tumors, and can potentially establish whether specific mutations are mutually exclusive or occur sequentially in the same subclone of cells.

Abstract
This work is aimed at investigating the influence of changes in the content of hemicelluloses of the autohydrolyzed poplar sapwood on the subsequent alkali impregnation for chemi-mechanical pulping (CMP). An alkali impregnation process was conducted using the autohydrolyzed poplar sapwood with different content of hemicelluloses as raw materials. The results showed that both the amount of NaOH consumption and swelling degree of poplar sapwood increased with the removal of hemicelluloses, thus enhancing the alkali impregnation effectiveness. The hemicelluloses removal can also shorten the alkali impregnation time for the autohydrolyzed poplar sapwood to achieve the similar impregnation effectiveness of unautohydrolyzed poplar sapwood. All of these can be attributed to the fact that the hemicelluloses removal would result in the exposure of more free hydroxyl groups on the cellulose and an increase in the porosity of the fiber cell walls.

Abstract
Autohydrolysis with different severity factors was performed on poplar wood chips prior to pulping, and the wettability, absorbility and the following impregnation of NaOH solution for the poplar wood chips were then investigated. The results showed that after autohydrolysis pretreatment the porosity, shrinkage and fiber saturation point (FSP) of the poplar wood chips were increased, while the surface contact angle decreased as the severity factor was increased. The autohydrolyzed chips absorbed more NaOH in impregnation that resulted in a low NaOH concentration in the bulk impregnation liquor (i.e., the impregnation liquor outside wood chips), while the concentration in the entrapped liquor (i.e., the impregnation liquor inside wood chips) was increased. Autohydrolysis substantially improved the effectiveness of alkali impregnation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the effect and toxicity of CA125-targeted antibody used as maintenance therapy for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Two reviewers searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, VIP databases, and the references of selected articles for randomized controlled trials comparing maintenance CA125-targeted antibody treatment with placebo/observation. One-, two-, three-, and five-year overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) were collected. Incidence and severity of adverse events were extracted. Meta-analysis of combined risk ratio (RR) for OS , PFS, and toxicity were conducted. RESULTS Four trials including 1,259 women were identified. Meta-analysis showed the combined RR was 1.02 (95% CI, 0.85-1.22) for three-year OS and 0.98 (95% CI, 0.70-1.39) for the three-year PFS. This review found that abagovomab and oregovomab caused toxicity no more than placebo. CONCLUSIONS CA125-targeted antibody used as maintenance therapy alone is not more effective than placebo but they were safe as maintenance therapy.
