Age and gender differences in children's self- and task perceptions during elementary school

We examined the development of children's self- and task perceptions during the elementary school years. 865 first-, second,- and fourth-grade children (ages 7-10) completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of competence in, and valuing of, activities in several activity domains (math, reading, sports, and instrumental music). Factor analyses showed that even the first graders had differentiated self-beliefs for the various activities. These analyses also indicated that children's competence beliefs and subjective task values formed distinct factors. Analyses assessing age and gender differences in children's beliefs showed that for all the activities except sports, younger children's (particularly the first graders) perceptions of competence and subjective task values were more positive than the beliefs of the older children. Boys had more positive competence beliefs and values than did girls for sport activities, and more positive competence beliefs for mathematics. Girls had more positive competence beliefs and values than did boys for reading and music activities.

School-based clinics: a response to the physical and mental health needs of adolescents

School-based clinics staffed by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, including social workers, are among the pioneering efforts that address both the health and education needs of adolescents. Initial research and publications about this concept of health care service delivery have focused on the area of reproductive health; however, it is necessary to broaden the knowledge base by examining the range of problems experienced by students using the clinics. To provide data on this issue, a study was conducted in four school-based health clinics in a large midwestern city. The results of this study document the use of the clinic for multiple issues and provide statistical support for the clinical impressions of the staff that students, despite their stated reason for visiting the clinic, were equally likely to have other physical and mental health problems.

Parents' and teachers' beliefs about adolescents: Effects of sex and experience

Three studies examine beliefs that parents and teachers have about adolescents. A distinction is made between category-based beliefs (concerning adolescents as a group) and target-based beliefs (concerning individual adoles cents). In Study 1, 90 late elementary and junior high school teachers indicated degree of agreement with a set of category-based statements about adolescents. Parents of early adolescents in Study 2 (N=1272) responded to category- and target-based statements. Study 3 compares the responses of teachers in Study 1 and parents in Study 2. Both teachers and parents endorsed beliefs that adolescence is difficult, and that adults can have an impact. Compared to fathers, mothers believed more in difficulty and in the negative effects of biological change on behavior. Parents of daughters believed adolescence is more difficult than parents of sons. Among teachers, amount of experience with adolescents was positively associated with the belief that adolescence is a difficult period of life. For parents, the effect of amount of experience was mixed. Experience had a greater impact on the category-based beliefs of teachers than parents. Possible influences on the origins and modification of beliefs are discussed.
