Abstract
BACKGROUND An attempt has been made to explore the nutritional profile of pink oyster mushrooms that have been grown in various agricultural residues, including sugarcane bagasse, rice straw, coconut coir and sawdust, along with other nutrient supplements such as defatted mustard and chickpea powder, for appropriate growth and fruiting body formation in a short span of time. The spawn production was experimented with five different grain varieties. The study became interesting when the observations differed slightly from the traditional practices, with the addition of defatted mustard supplements resulting in a positive correlation with respect to reducing the fruiting time, as well as improving yield and the nutritional profile of Pleurotus djamor. RESULTS An elevated yield of 651.93 g kg-1 was recorded in the medium where the RS and DM were used in the ratio of 1:0.01 (rice straw +1% w/w defatted mustard) bag, whereas, in terms of protein content, a maximum yield of 32.57 ± 0.79 mg g-1 was observed when SB:DM was in the same ratio (sugarcane bagasse +1% w/w defatted mustard) bag. CONCLUSION To confer the best outcomes from the screened substrates, a series of experiments were performed by varying the concentration of RS and SB, with 1% w/w DM. It is worth noting that the highest protein content of 32.76 ± 0.38 mg g-1 was obtained along with the total yield of 702.56 ± 2.9 g kg-1 of mushroom when the ratio of RS:SB was 0.7:0.3. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
1. This study evaluated the suitability of routine analytical procedures and used mass spectrometry-based proteomic approaches to distinguish meat from dead chicken/ cold-slaughtered birds (CS), electrically stunned and slaughtered birds, as per standard protocols (ES), and birds slaughtered according to halal guidelines (HS).2. Meat from CS birds had lower (P < 0.05) pH, water-holding capacity and higher (P < 0.05) lipid oxidation, haem iron content, residual blood and total viable counts relative to ES and HS meat indicating poor quality.3. The results demonstrated the presence of unique protein bands on SDS-PAGE only in CS meat that can be used for routine screening.4. Protein analysis using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry identified haemoglobin subunit alpha-A and alpha-D; Adenylate kinase isoenzyme 1 as reliable and stable marker proteins for authentication of dead chicken meat under raw and cooked conditions and halal slaughtered chicken, respectively.5. The methods used may be employed by the food safety and regulatory agencies for regular screening of meat quality and to authenticate CS or HS chicken.

Abstract
The present study aims to establish an integrated strategy for valorization of kinnow peel waste. A total of ten natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were exploited for extraction of pectin. The highest yield of pectin enriched material was reported 35.66 % w/dw using choline chloride-Maltose based NADES. The extraction process parameters and chemical composition of NADES influenced the yield and different associated physico-chemical attributes of the pectin enriched material. All the recovered pectin enriched materials found to be composed of low methoxy pectin (degree of methylation: 18.41-40.26 %) and galacturonic acid (GalA) content was in range of 67.56-78.22 %. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to categorise isolated pectin enriched materials based on similarities and differences. The liquid fraction upon pectin extraction presented a considerable amount of fermentable sugar which was further utilized for lactic acid production by microbial intervention. The microbial strain Lactobacillus amylophilus GV6 was exploited for lactic acid fermentation where the highest yield reached 55.59 g/L. A sustainable and straight-forward biorefinery concept was developed for extraction of pectin enriched material and lactic acid production from kinnow peel waste with potential application in food and biotechnological sectors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is an evolving problem with varied presentation. No definite treatment guidelines are available at present that may reduce rate of recurrence. Current evidence suggests a ductal pathology behind IGM, which leads to periductal mastitis, leakage and sinus/fistula formation. Thus, excision of the sinus/fistulous tract with en-bloc wide local excision (WLE) of the lesion could be curative. The objective of this study was to look for the basic aetiology of IGM and evaluate the effectiveness of WLE with total or partial duct excision as a curative approach. METHODS An institutional prospective comparative study was conducted over 4 years (2015-2019), in which 59 cases of IGM were randomly divided into three groups. After necessary investigations, patients in group A received steroid therapy, those in group B received WLE and patients in group C received WLE with total or partial duct excision as the mode of treatment. Postoperative follow-up was between 6 months and 3 years. RESULTS Histopathological examination (HPE) was found to be the most suitable diagnostic procedure. Patients in group B showed the highest rate of recurrence (73.6%), followed by group A (35.0%) and group C (5.0%). Patients in group C had a significantly lower chance of recurrence compared with both group A and group B (p < 0.05). HPE reports of excised ducts from patients in group C showed ductal disruption and leakage along with periductal granuloma in 70% of cases. CONCLUSIONS The presence of duct granuloma indicates the association of ductal pathology in IGM. IGM is therefore a disease of the mammary ducts and en-bloc duct excision is curative in non-responding cases.

Abstract
The effect of amylopullulanase treatment on recrystallization behaviour and the formation of resistant starch crystals have been investigated. Extracted potato starch (Solanum tuberosum) has been subjected to the enzymatic assisted bioprocessing without any physical or chemical treatment, where 120 min of incubation, 7 % (v/v) of enzyme and 8 mL/g of water content were found to be optimum to increase the resistant starch content by 41.88 %. The resistant starch crystals showed the characteristic behaviour of B-type allomorph with an increase in 21.32 % crystallinity. The modified crystals portrayed less reduction in actual weight when assessed by thermo-gravimetric analysis. The compact linear arrangement of the linear amylose chains within the crystallized granule of starch has been evidenced by Bright Field Microscopy. The microstructure of the resistant starch crystals showed 33.18 % reduction in porosity when the 3-dimensional structural form was analysed by X-ray micro-Computed Tomography.

Abstract
Spin pumping is a key property for spintronic application that can be realized in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers. Here we demonstrate the possibility of improving spin pumping in permalloy (Py)/tantalum (Ta) bilayers through control of Ta heavy metal deposition temperature. Through a combination of structural and ferromagnetic resonance based magnetization dynamics study, we reveal the role of Ta deposition temperature in improving spin mixing conductance which is a key parameter for spin pumping across the Py/Ta interface. The results show that by depositing Ta above room temperature, a high spin mixing conductance of 7.7 ×1018m-2is obtained withα-Ta layer. The results present an understanding of the correlation between heavy metal deposition temperature and interface structure improvement and consequent control of spin pumping in Py/Ta bilayers.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QDs), owing to their single atom-like electronic structure due to quantum confinement, are often referred to as artificial atoms. This unique physical property results in the diverse functions exhibited by QDs. A wide array of applications have been achieved by the surface functionalization of QDs, resulting in exceptional optical, antimicrobial, catalytic, cytotoxic and enzyme inhibition properties. Ordinarily, traditionally prepared QDs are subjected to post synthesis functionalization via a variety of methods, such as ligand exchange or covalent and non-covalent conjugation. Nevertheless, solvent toxicity, combined with the high temperature and pressure conditions during the preparation of QDs and the low product yield due to multiple steps in the functionalization, limit their overall use. This has driven scientists to investigate the development of greener, environmental friendly and cost-effective methods that can circumvent the complexity and strenuousness associated with traditional processes of bio-functionalization. In this review, a detailed analysis of the methods to bio-prepare pre-functionalized QDs, with elucidated mechanisms, and their application in the areas of catalysis and biomedical applications has been conducted. The environmental and health and safety aspects of the bio-derived QDs have been briefly discussed to unveil the future of nano-commercialization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is recommended to start within hours of needlestick injuries (NSIs) among healthcare workers (HCWs). Delays associated with awaiting the results of testing from the source patient (whose blood was involved in the NSI) can lead to psychological consequences for the exposed HCW as well as symptomatic toxicities from empiric PEP. AIMS After developing a 'stat' (immediate) workflow that prioritized phlebotomy and resulting of source patient bloodwork for immediate handling and processing, we retrospectively investigated whether our new workflow had (i) decreased HIV order-result interval times for source patient HIV bloodwork and (ii) decreased the frequency of HIV PEP prescriptions being dispensed to exposed HCWs. METHODS We retrospectively analysed NSI records to identify source patient HIV order-result intervals and PEP dispensing frequencies across a 6-year period (encompassing a 54-month pre-intervention period and 16-month post-intervention period). RESULTS We identified 251 NSIs, which occurred at similar frequencies before versus after our intervention (means 3.54 NSIs and 3.75 NSIs per month, respectively). Median HIV order-result intervals decreased significantly (P < 0.05) from 195 to 156 min after our intervention, while the proportion of HCWs who received one or more doses of PEP decreased significantly (P < 0.001) from 50% (96/191) to 23% (14/60). CONCLUSION Using a 'stat' workflow to prioritize source patient testing after NSIs, we achieved a modest decrease in order-result intervals and a dramatic decrease in HIV PEP dispensing rates. This simple intervention may improve HCWs' physical and psychological health during a traumatic time.

Abstract
Asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap, termed as ACO, is a complex heterogeneous disease characterised by persistent airflow limitation, which manifests features of both asthma and COPD. These patients have a worse prognosis, in terms of more frequent and severe exacerbations, more frequent symptoms, worse quality of life, increased comorbidities and a faster lung function decline. In absence of clear diagnostic or therapeutic guidelines, ACO presents as a challenge to clinicians. The present study aims to investigate whether ACO patients have a distinct exhaled breath condensate (EBC) metabolic profile in comparison to asthma and COPD. A total of 132 age and BMI matched male smokers were recruited in the exploratory phase which consisted of (i) controls = 33 (ii) asthma = 34 (iii) COPD = 30 and (iv) ACO = 35. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics, 8 metabolites (fatty acid, propionate, isopropanol, lactate, acetone, valine, methanol and formate) were identified to be significantly dysregulated in ACO subjects when compared to both, asthma and COPD. The expression of these dysregulated metabolites were further validated in a fresh patient cohort consisting of (i) asthma = 32 (ii) COPD = 32 and (iii) ACO = 40, which exhibited a similar expression pattern. Multivariate receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves generated using these metabolites provided a robust ACO classification model. The findings were also integrated with previously identified serum metabolites and inflammatory markers to develop a robust predictive model for differentiation of ACO. Our findings suggest that NMR metabolomics of EBC holds potential as a platform to identify robust, non-invasive biomarkers for differentiating ACO from asthma and COPD.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QDs) as bio-detectors have been intensively explored owing to their size dependent optical properties and are still envisioned to be used in a plethora of biomedical and healthcare areas. However, the medical application of the biosensors demands the ultrasensitive detection of the analytes, which is usually limited for the conventional methods of colorimetric and fluorescence detection. The Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) process, exploited by QDs, translates the close association between the analyte and the detector into optical properties and thus promises the effective detection of biomolecules. FRET based detection systems for biomolecules utilize surface-functionalized QDs which are usually modified post production using different organic groups. In this work, a novel protocol was formulated to produce bio-functionalized QDs with controlled chemical and optical characteristics. Here, we demonstrate the first-ever biological green synthesis of MoS2 QDs using Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bio-functionalized QDs show green luminescence with a quantum yield of 42%, supporting their application as an optical sensor. These QDs are utilized to detect the pico-molar concentration of glucose, which makes them ideal for early diabetes detection and many biomedical applications. Also, the ability to sense pico-molar levels of H2O2 opens the path for its utilization in apprehending the plant signaling pathways under stress conditions.

Abstract
We consider exciton polaritons in a zigzag chain of coupled elliptical micropillars subjected to incoherent excitation. The driven-dissipative nature of the system along with the naturally present polarization splitting inside the pillars gives rise to nonreciprocal dynamics, which eventually leads to the non-Hermitian skin effect, where all the modes of the system collapse to one edge. As a result, the polaritons propagate only in one direction along the chain, independent of the excitation position, and the propagation in the opposite direction is suppressed. The system shows robustness against disorder and, using the bistable nature of polaritons to encode information, we show one-way information transfer. This paves the way for compact and robust feedback-free one-dimensional polariton transmission channels without the need for external magnetic field, which are compatible with proposals for polaritonic circuits.

Abstract
Background Asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) refers to a group of poorly studied and characterised patients reporting with disease presentations of both asthma and COPD, thereby making both diagnosis and treatment challenging for the clinicians. They exhibit a higher burden in terms of both mortality and morbidity in comparison to patients with only asthma or COPD. The pathophysiology of the disease and its existence as a unique disease entity remains unclear. The present study aims to determine whether ACO has a distinct metabolic and immunological mediator profile in comparison to asthma and COPD. Methods Global metabolomic profiling using two different groups of patients [discovery (D) and validation (V)] were conducted. Serum samples obtained from moderate and severe asthma [n = 34(D); n = 32(V)], moderate and severe COPD [n = 30(D); 32(V)], ACO patients [n = 35(D); 40(V)] and healthy controls [n = 33(D)] were characterized using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Multiplexed analysis of 25 immunological markers (IFN-γ (interferon gamma), TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha), IL-12p70 (interleukin 12p70), IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-10, IL-1α, IL-1β, TGF-β (transforming growth factor), IL-6, IL-17E, IL-21, IL-23, eotaxin, GM-CSF (granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor), IFN-α (interferon alpha), IL-18, NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), periostin, TSLP (thymic stromal lymphopoietin), MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein- 1), YKL-40 (chitinase 3 like 1) and IL-8) was also performed in the discovery cohort. Results Eleven metabolites [serine, threonine, ethanolamine, glucose, cholesterol, 2-palmitoylglycerol, stearic acid, lactic acid, linoleic acid, D-mannose and succinic acid] were found to be significantly altered in ACO as compared with asthma and COPD. The levels and expression trends were successfully validated in a fresh cohort of subjects. Thirteen immunological mediators including TNFα, IL-1β, IL-17E, GM-CSF, IL-18, NGAL, IL-5, IL-10, MCP-1, YKL-40, IFN-γ, IL-6 and TGF-β showed distinct expression patterns in ACO. These markers and metabolites exhibited significant correlation with each other and also with lung function parameters. Conclusions The energy metabolites, cholesterol and fatty acids correlated significantly with the immunological mediators, suggesting existence of a possible link between the inflammatory status of these patients and impaired metabolism. The present findings could be possibly extended to better define the ACO diagnostic criteria, management and tailoring therapies exclusively for the disease.

Abstract
Cell-cell adhesion is a key mechanism to control tissue integrity and migration. In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), cell migration facilitates distant metastases and is correlated with poor prognosis. RAP1, a ras-like protein, has an important role in the progression of HNSCC. RAC1 is an integrin-linked, ras-like protein that promotes cell migration. Here we show that loss of cell-cell adhesion is correlated with inactivation of RAP1 confirmed by 2 different biochemical approaches. RAP1 activation is required for cell-matrix adhesion confirmed by adhesion to fibronectin-coated plates with cells that have biochemically activated RAP1. This effect is reversed when RAP1 is inactivated. In addition, RAP1GTP-mediated adhesion is only facilitated through α5β1 integrin complex and is not a function of either α5 or β1 integrin alone. Moreover, the inside-out signaling of RAP1 activation is coordinated with RAC1 activation. These findings show that RAP1 has a prominent role in cell-matrix adhesion via extracellular matrix molecule fibronectin-induced α5β1 integrin and supports a critical role for the RAP1/RAC1 signaling axis in HNSCC cell migration.

Abstract
Recently realized higher order topological insulators have taken a surge of interest among the theoretical and experimental condensed matter community. The two-dimensional second order topological insulators give rise to zero-dimensional localized corner modes that reside within the band gap of the system along with edge modes that inhabit a band edge next to bulk modes. Thanks to the topological nature, information can be trapped at the corners of these systems, which will be unhampered even in the presence of disorder. Being localized at the corners, the exchange of information among the corner states is an issue. Here we show that the nonlinearity in an exciton polariton system can allow the coupling between the different corners through the edge states based on optical parametric scattering, realizing a system of multiple connectible topological modes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap, termed as ACO, is a complex heterogeneous disease without any clear diagnostic or therapeutic guidelines. The pathophysiology of the disease, its characteristic features, and existence as a unique disease entity remains unclear. Individuals with ACO have a faster lung function decline, more frequent exacerbations, and worse quality of life than those with COPD or asthma alone. OBJECTIVES The present study aims to determine whether ACO has a distinct metabolic profile in comparison to asthma and COPD. METHODS Two different groups of patients were recruited as discovery (D) and validation (V) cohorts. Serum samples obtained from moderate and severe asthma patients diagnosed as per GINA guidelines [n = 34(D); n = 32(V)], moderate and severe COPD cases identified by GOLD guidelines [n = 30(D); 32(V)], ACO patients diagnosed by joint GOLD and GINA guidelines [n = 35(D); 40(V)] and healthy controls [n = 33(D)] were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. RESULTS Multivariate and univariate analysis indicated that 12 metabolites [lipid, isoleucine, N-acetylglycoproteins (NAG), valine, glutamate, citric acid, glucose, L-leucine, lysine, asparagine, phenylalanine and histidine] were dysregulated in ACO patients when compared with both asthma and COPD. These metabolites were further validated in a fresh cohort of patients, which again exhibited a similar expression pattern. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that ACO has an enhanced energy and metabolic burden associated with it as compared to asthma and COPD. It is anticipated that our results will stimulate researchers to further explore ACO and unravel the pathophysiological complexities associated with the disease.

Abstract
Background Escalating energy security, burgeoning population and rising costs of fossil fuels have focussed our attention on tapping renewable energy sources. As the utilization of food crops for biofuel production culminates into food vs. fuel dilemma, there is an intensive need for alternatives. Production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass owing to its profuse availability and high holocellulose content is a promising area for research. Results In the present study, pineapple leaf, an agro-industrial waste was pretreated with laccase to enhance the enzymatic digestibility of the substrate for improved production of reducing sugar. Variables determining enzymatic delignification of pineapple leaf waste have been optimized by response surface methodology based on central composite design. Maximum delignification of 78.57%(w/w) resulted in reducing sugar of 492.33 ± 3.1 mg/g in 5.30 h. The structural changes in pineapple leaf waste, after laccase treatment, were studied through Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy. Specific surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of the substrate were studied using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and Barrett–Joyner–Halenda methods and found a significant increase in the aforementioned parameters after delignification. Conclusion Laccase mediated delignification of pineapple leaf waste is a cleaner sustainable process for enhanced production of reducing sugar which can accomplish the demand for biofuels.![]()

Abstract
The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from wastewaters using microbial mixed cultures (MMC) has been attracting increased interest because of PHA's biodegradability characteristics. Production of PHA by an MMC enriched with PHA-accumulating bacteria was compared using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewaters under various feeding strategies, namely pulse and batch feed addition. To obtain an enriched MMC, a sequencing batch reactor was inoculated with activated sludge fed with acetate and subjected to aerobic dynamic feeding. The enriched MMC was able to accumulate PHA up to 72.6% of cell dry weight (CDW) with pulse addition of acetate controlled by the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the reactor. In a batch accumulation experiment with acetate, the PHA content achieved (28.5% CDW) was less than that of the pulse feeding strategy with the same amount of acetate (~2000 mg C/L). Using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewater fed in pulses, the maximum PHA accumulated by the enriched MMC was similar for both wastewaters (45% CDW), in spite of the higher volatile fatty acid concentration in acidified brewery wastewater. The pulse feed addition controlled by the DO concentration was difficult to implement for wastewater as compared to acetate because the difference in DO concentration between substrate availability and depletion was low. For the batch addition of acidified wastewater, a slightly lower PHA content (39% CDW) was obtained. These results show that both brewery wastewaters can be utilized for PHA production with a similar maximum PHA storage capacity.

Abstract
Soaring demand for alternative fuels has been gaining wide interest due to depletion of conventional fuel, increasing petroleum prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Biodiesel, an alternative fuel, derived from oleaginous microbes has been promising because of short incubation time and easy to scale up. Oleaginous yeast Trichosporon sp. is capable of utilizing glycerol and agro-residues for enhanced lipid synthesis. Lipid extraction from Trichosporon sp. biomass showed highest lipid content with ultrasonic assisted extraction (43 ± 0.33%, w/w) coupled with process parameters than the conventional Soxhlet (30 ± 0.28%, w/w) and Binary solvent [choloroform:methanol, (2:1, v/v)] methods (36 ± 0.38%, w/w), respectively. The standardized process parameters of ultrasonic assisted extraction coupled with chloroform/methanol solvent system resulted 95-97% of conversion efficiency in 20 min at 30 °C with a frequency of 50 Hz and 2800 W power, respectively. Enzymatic transesterification of yeast biomass lipid obtained 85% of fatty acid methyl esters that are predominant with oleic acid methyl ester followed by palmitic and stearic acid methyl esters, respectively. These results substantiate that the ultrasonic assisted extraction is a potential green extraction technique that had reduced time, energy and solvent consumption without compromising on lipid quality. Deploying this green extraction technique could make the biodiesel production process inexpensive and eco-friendly.

Abstract
Commercialization of citrus fruit juice is always hindered by the bitterness development in juice when stored for a significant period of time. In order to debitter citrus juice, an attempt has been taken up by treating the juice with tannase. Central Composite Design (CCD) based Response Surface Methodology (RSM) has been implemented to evaluate and optimize the effect of underlying process parameters viz., enzyme volume, temperature, incubation time and enzyme titre on debittering effect of Assam lemon juice. The significance of parameters and their interaction were assessed by analysis of variance at 95% level of confidence. Optimization study reveals that the maximum debittering (40.12 ± 0.02%) of Assam lemon juice takes place at ambient temperature (37 °C) within an incubation time of 2 h and 1.12% (v/v) enzyme volume while 30 IU/ml enzyme activity. Moreover, percentage contribution of the underlying process parameters demonstrate that the enzyme volume and enzyme titre as first and second most significant contributors in process of debittering. As part of validating the above results, experimental debittering has been performed and compared with predicted debittering percentage which showed a high coefficient value (0.971) which ensures the effectiveness of the proposed model. Biochemical analysis of the treated juice reveals improved antioxidant property after enzymatic treatment by 15.30%. Total sugar and reducing sugar content has also been enhanced by 1.38 and 1.49 folds, respectively, after enzymatic treatment of juice. Furthermore, no alteration in the elemental composition of the treated juice ensure that the quality of the final juice is retained with the enzyme applications. Sensory analysis based on nine-point Hedonic scale advocates the best organoleptic property in 1% (v/v) enzyme treated juice.

Abstract
Purpose Corrected T1 (cT1) value is a novel MRI-based quantitative metric for assessing a composite of liver inflammation and fibrosis. It has been shown to distinguish between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFL) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. However, these studies were conducted in patients at high risk for liver disease. This study establishes the normal reference range of cT1 values for a large UK population, and assesses interactions of age and gender. Methods MR data were acquired on a 1.5 T system as part of the UK Biobank Imaging Enhancement study. Measures for Proton Density Fat Fraction and cT1 were calculated from the MRI data using a multiparametric MRI software application. Data that did not meet quality criteria were excluded from further analysis. Inter and intra-reader variability was estimated in a set of data. A cohort at low risk for NAFL was identified by excluding individuals with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and PDFF ≥ 5%. Of the 2816 participants with data of suitable quality, 1037 (37%) were classified as at low risk. Results The cT1 values in the low-risk population ranged from 573 to 852 ms with a median of 666 ms and interquartile range from 643 to 694 ms. Iron correction of T1 was necessary in 36.5% of this reference population. Age and gender had minimal effect on cT1 values. Conclusion The majority of cT1 values are tightly clustered in a population at low risk for NAFL, suggesting it has the potential to serve as a new quantitative imaging biomarker for studies of liver health and disease.

Abstract
Summary1. A material active in coagulating fibrinogen has been purified thirty-fold from crude venom of the species Bothrops jararaca. This material exhibits clotting and esterase activities, but no measurable proteolytic activity if measured by its ability to digest denatured hemoglobin.2. The clotting activity of the purified material (but not its esterase activity) is greatly enhanced by the addition of 2—3 μM of calcium ion; no other divalent metallic ion can duplicate the accelerating effect of Ca++ ion.3. The purified material is stable to dialysis, standing at room temperature for 18—20 hours, or heating at 50° C for 10 minutes; it loses both its clotting and esterase activities if heated at 70° C for 25 minutes or at 80° C for 10 minutes4. Although the powerful proteolytic enzyme inhibitors ovomucoid and soyabean trypsin inhibitor can block the clotting and esterase activities of thrombin, they are ineffective with respect to these properties of venom-coagulin. DFP, an inhibitor of far less specificity, can prevent the actions both of thrombin and of venom-coagulin5. An amount of heparin sufficient to block the clotting activity of thrombin is unable to prevent the action of venom-coagulin on fibrinogen; a much higher concentration of heparin is needed. In both cases the addition of 2—3 μM of Ca++ ion necessitates the introduction of considerably more heparin in order to block the actions of thrombin and venom-coagulin.6. While the antithrombin contained in serum can neutralize the clotting and esterase activities of thrombin, it has no effect on the actions of venom-coagulin.

Abstract
The high sensitivity of scanning probe microscopes poses a barrier to their use in noisy environments. Vibrational noise, whether from structural or acoustic sources, can manifest as relative motion between the probe tip and sample, which then appears in the probe position ("Z") feedback as it tries to cancel this motion. Here we describe an active cancellation process that nullifies the appearance of this vibration by adding a drive signal into the existing Z-feedback loop. The drive is digitally calculated from accelerometer-based vibration measurements. By transferring the vibration cancellation effort to this drive signal, vibration-created noise is significantly reduced. This inexpensive and easy solution requires no major instrumental modifications and is ideal for those looking to place their microscopes in noisier environments, coupled, for example, to active refrigeration systems (e.g., pulse tube cryocoolers) or other high-vibration instruments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) can be delayed in clinical practice. In tuberculosis endemic areas, empirical anti-tubercular therapy further delays treatment. AIM(S) To assess risk factors for diagnostic delay and its impact on the long-term complications of Crohn's disease in India where tuberculosis is endemic. METHODS Data from a large prospectively established inflammatory bowel disease registry were analysed retrospectively. The time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis (diagnostic delay) was calculated and categorised into two groups based on median diagnostic delay. The risk factors for delay including anti-tubercular therapy were analysed. Logistic regression analysis was done to assess impact of diagnostic delay on development of stenotic and fistular complications including need for surgery. RESULTS Seven hundred and twenty Crohn's disease patients (60.3% male, median: 28 years) were included. Main outcome measures were stenosis, fistula and need for surgery. Subjects with diagnostic delay >18 months (median) developed significantly higher stenotic complications and surgery (OR 4.12; 95% CI: 2.74-6.33, P < 0.001 and OR 2.41, 95% CI: 1.68-3.42, P < 0.001), respectively, compared to those ≤18 months. There was no difference in the development of fistulous complications. 193/720 (27%) received anti-tubercular therapy which significantly contributed to diagnostic delay (OR: 2.47; 95% CI: 1.76-3.47, P < 0.001) with 47% showing initial clinical response (Crohn's disease activity index- CDAI decrease >100). Moreover, the incidence of stenotic complications was significantly higher in patients who had received prior anti-tubercular therapy (55/193 (28.49%) vs 78/527 (14.8%), P < 0.001, OR: 2.60, 95% CI: 1.64-4.12). CONCLUSIONS Diagnostic delay in Crohn's disease is associated with significantly higher stenotic complications and need for surgery. Empirical anti-tubercular therapy is the single largest contributor to diagnostic delay in tuberculosis endemic areas. Despite initial clinical response to anti-tubercular therapy, long-term stenotic complications are higher.

Abstract
Purpose Although arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) are currently the preferred mode of permanent hemodialysis access they do have significant problems due to initial non-maturation and a later venous stenosis. These problems appear to have been exacerbated following a push to increase AVF prevalence in the US. The reasons for both AVF non-maturation and the later venous stenoses are unclear but are thought to be related to abnormal hemodynamic wall shear stress (WSS) profiles. This technical note aims to describe the successful development of measurement techniques that can be used to establish a complete hemodynamic profile in a pig model with two different configurations of AVF. Methods and results The curved and straight AVF configurations were created in an in vivo pig model. Flow and pressure in the AVFs were measured using the perivascular flow probes and Doppler flow wires while the pressure was recorded using a pressure transducer. The anatomical configuration was obtained using two different approaches: a) combination of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and angiograms, (b) 64 slice CT angiography. 3D models were reconstructed using image processing and computer modeling techniques. Numerical calculations were then performed by applying the measured flow and pressure data into the configurations to obtain the hemodynamic WSS profiles. Conclusion The described methodologies will allow the calculation and optimization of WSS profiles in animal models. This information could then be translated to the clinical setting where it would have a positive impact on improving the early maturation rates of AVFs as well as reducing the late venous stenoses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the extent to which advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) have been integrated into practice by pediatric infectious disease (PID) specialists. DESIGN We conducted an online survey of the Infectious Diseases Society of America's Emerging Infections Network (EIN) membership. RESULTS Of the 323 members, 197 (61%) responded: 7% cared for ⩾5 children with TB disease and 34% for ⩾5 children with LTBI annually. We identified substantial variations in the use of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) based upon age, immune status, and TB risk factors. In addition, tuberculin skin test (TST) use was three times more common in younger children. Variations existed in managing children with discordant TST and IGRA results. Less variation existed in LTBI treatment, with 86% preferring a 9-month course of isoniazid; few other, newer regimens were used routinely. CONCLUSION Substantial variations exist in LTBI management; uptake of newer diagnostic tools and treatment regimens has been slow. Variations in practice and the lag time to integrating new data into practice may indicate the relative infrequency with which providers encounter LTBI. Our findings reflect the need for increased visibility of existing TB guidelines and resources for expert consultation for scenarios not covered by guidelines.

Abstract
Rapid urbanization and industrialization have accelerated the energy demand which cannot be met by decreasing fossil fuels thereby substantiate the need for lignocellulosic ethanol. The present study is one such attempt towards bioethanol production in an eco-friendly manner using enzymes in which a mixture of lignocellulosic biomass namely, Ricinus communis, Saccharum officinarum (tops) and Saccharum spontaneum were taken as a substrate. The mixed biomass was processed through partially consolidated bioprocessing (PCBP) approach which involves a non-isothermal simultaneous pretreatment and saccharification step where a concoction of laccase (Pleurotus djamor) and holocellulase (Trichoderma reseei RUT C30) was used followed by co-fermentation within the same reactor. The process parameters influencing PCBP were optimized using feed-forward ANN model which resulted in a maximum ethanol concentration of 7.86% (v/v) (62.01g/L) at pentose to hexose strain ratio of 0.696 (v/v), substrate loading of 27.54% (w/v) and incubation time of 21.96h.
