Abstract
The accumulation of senescent cells drives inflammaging and increases morbidity of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. Immune responses are built upon dynamic changes in cell metabolism that supply energy and substrates for cell proliferation, differentiation, and activation. Metabolic changes imposed by environmental stress and inflammation on immune cells and tissue microenvironment are thus chiefly involved in the pathophysiology of allergic and other immune-driven diseases. Altered cell metabolism is also a hallmark of cell senescence, a condition characterized by loss of proliferative activity in cells that remain metabolically active. Accelerated senescence can be triggered by acute or chronic stress and inflammatory responses. In contrast, replicative senescence occurs as part of the physiological aging process and has protective roles in cancer surveillance and wound healing. Importantly, cell senescence can also change or hamper response to diverse therapeutic treatments. Understanding the metabolic pathways of senescence in immune and structural cells is therefore critical to detect, prevent, or revert detrimental aspects of senescence-related immunopathology, by developing specific diagnostics and targeted therapies. In this paper, we review the main changes and metabolic alterations occurring in senescent immune cells (macrophages, B cells, T cells). Subsequently, we present the metabolic footprints described in translational studies in patients with chronic asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and review the ongoing preclinical studies and clinical trials of therapeutic approaches aiming at targeting metabolic pathways to antagonize pathological senescence. Because this is a recently emerging field in allergy and clinical immunology, a better understanding of the metabolic profile of the complex landscape of cell senescence is needed. The progress achieved so far is already providing opportunities for new therapies, as well as for strategies aimed at disease prevention and supporting healthy aging.

Abstract
Naturalized dyes (NDs) are innovative and eco-friendly synthetic compounds in which a chromophore is covalently linked to a natural sugar (e.g., lactose). The sugar moiety confers water-solubility and biocompatibility to the dye molecule as a whole. NDs have demonstrated potential application in dyeing textiles and leather. The purpose of this work was to demonstrate that selected NDs can be also applied to dye wood. To that aim, two NDs were tested to color beech and poplar wood. The NDs were applied as a simple aqueous solution or mixed with a waterborne, biogenic staining agent (commercially available Gemma U50). Moreover, the effect of the application of a biogenic waterborne top coat (commercially available Resina Plus U49) was also studied. Different methods were tested to investigate the potential application of these NDs to wood. The dyeing behavior was analyzed in terms of penetration into the substrate, covering capacity and color homogeneity through macro- and microscopic observations and colorimetric measurements. The color fastness to water washout and the color stability to light, in particular by exposing the wooden samples to artificial aging (UV radiations in a Solar Box), were also investigated. The NDs, when used as water solutions, were able to afford a homogeneous coating and a pleasant appearance on the wood surface, as well as a good color fastness to washout with water. Dissolving the dyes in the stain or applying the top coat generally resulted in even better color fastness to washout. However, all the application methods tested showed limited resistance to fading in the Solar Box, which therefore remains a drawback for this type of product.

Abstract
Mechanical complication of acute myocardial infarction, such as left ventricular free-wall or septal rupture, pseudo-aneurysm or true aneurysm, are uncommon but potentially fatal conditions, that require an early diagnosis and management. We describe a case of post-infarction ventricular septal rupture with pseudoaneurysm formation included in the right ventricle.

Abstract
While desired for the cure of allergy, regulatory immune cell subsets and nonclassical Th2-biased inflammatory mediators in the tumour microenvironment can contribute to immune suppression and escape of tumours from immunological detection and clearance. A key aim in the cancer field is therefore to design interventions that can break immunological tolerance and halt cancer progression, whereas on the contrary allergen immunotherapy exactly aims to induce tolerance. In this position paper, we review insights on immune tolerance derived from allergy and from cancer inflammation, focusing on what is known about the roles of key immune cells and mediators. We propose that research in the field of AllergoOncology that aims to delineate these immunological mechanisms with juxtaposed clinical consequences in allergy and cancer may point to novel avenues for therapeutic interventions that stand to benefit both disciplines.

Abstract
Objectives To quantify residual coronary artery disease measured using the SYNTAX score (SS) and its relation to outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis on a consecutive series of 1608 patients [mean age 68 years, standard deviation (SD): 7, F:M, 242:1366] undergoing first-time isolated CABG from 2004 to 2015. The baseline SS was retrospectively determined from preoperative angiograms, and the residual SS (rSS) was measured during assessment of the actual operative report for each patient after CABG. Patients were then stratified according to tercile cut points of low (rSS low 0-11, N = 537), intermediate (rSS mid >11-18.5, N = 539) and high residual SS (rSS high >18.5, N = 532). The Cox regression model was used to investigate the impact of rSS on major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) at 1 year. Results The mean preoperative SS was 26.6 (SD: 9.4) (range 10.1-53), and the residual SS after CABG was 15.3 (SD: 8.4) (range 0-34) ( P < 0.001 versus preoperative). At 1 year, cumulative incidence of MACCE in the low rSS was 1.5% ( N = 8/537), 4.5% ( N = 24/539) in the intermediate and 8.8% ( N = 47/532) in the high rSS group. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a statistically significant difference of MACCE-free survival between the three groups (log-rank test, P < 0.001). The estimated MACCE-free survival rate at 1 year was 98.1% [standard error (SE): 1.6] for the rSS low , 95.5% (SE: 1.9) for the rSS mid , and 90.5% (SE: 1.3) for the rSS high group, respectively. After multivariable adjustment, the rSS high group was independently associated with a higher incidence of MACCE at 1 year (hazard ratio 1.92, 95% confidence interval 1.21-3.23) compared to the rSS low group. Conclusions These unanticipated findings suggest that a residual SS may be a useful tool for risk stratification of patients undergoing isolated first-time CABG. Our study may set the stage for further investigations addressing this important clinical question.

Abstract
Th2 immunity and allergic immune surveillance play critical roles in host responses to pathogens, parasites and allergens. Numerous studies have reported significant links between Th2 responses and cancer, including insights into the functions of IgE antibodies and associated effector cells in both antitumour immune surveillance and therapy. The interdisciplinary field of AllergoOncology was given Task Force status by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2014. Affiliated expert groups focus on the interface between allergic responses and cancer, applied to immune surveillance, immunomodulation and the functions of IgE-mediated immune responses against cancer, to derive novel insights into more effective treatments. Coincident with rapid expansion in clinical application of cancer immunotherapies, here we review the current state-of-the-art and future translational opportunities, as well as challenges in this relatively new field. Recent developments include improved understanding of Th2 antibodies, intratumoral innate allergy effector cells and mediators, IgE-mediated tumour antigen cross-presentation by dendritic cells, as well as immunotherapeutic strategies such as vaccines and recombinant antibodies, and finally, the management of allergy in daily clinical oncology. Shedding light on the crosstalk between allergic response and cancer is paving the way for new avenues of treatment.

Abstract
Owners and their domestic animals via skin shedding and secretions, mutually exchange microbiomes, potential pathogens and innate immune molecules. Among the latter especially lipocalins are multifaceted: they may have an immunomodulatory function and, furthermore, they represent one of the most important animal allergen families. The amino acid identities, as well as their structures by superposition modeling were compared among human lipocalins, hLCN1 and hLCN2, and most important animal lipocalin allergens, such as Can f 1, Can f 2 and Can f 4 from dog, Fel d 4 from cats, Bos d 5 from cow's milk, Equ c 1 from horses, and Mus m 1 from mice, all of them representing major allergens. The β-barrel fold with a central molecular pocket is similar among human and animal lipocalins. Thereby, lipocalins are able to transport a variety of biological ligands in their highly conserved calyx-like cavity, among them siderophores with the strongest known capability to complex iron (Fe(3+) ). Levels of human lipocalins are elevated in nonallergic inflammation and cancer, associated with innate immunoregulatory functions that critically depend on ligand load. Accordingly, deficient loading of lipocalin allergens establishes their capacity to induce Th2 hypersensitivity. Our similarity analysis of human and mammalian lipocalins highlights their function in innate immunity and allergy.

Abstract
AIMS Polymorphonuclear neutrophils are key players in innate immunity. The innate immune system needs to be tightly controlled to ensure proper activation but also no overactivation. Galanin has been shown to regulate inflammatory reactions, and therefore, we aimed to elucidate the expression of galanin and its three receptors (GAL1 -GAL3 ) in polymorphonuclear neutrophils and to evaluate whether galanin exerts direct or indirect effects on human and murine polymorphonuclear neutrophils. METHODS Human peripheral polymorphonuclear neutrophils were isolated from fresh blood of healthy donors, and murine polymorphonuclear neutrophils were isolated from bone marrow of C57BL/6N mice. Gene expression was evaluated by qRT-PCR. As a marker for polymorphonuclear neutrophil activation, CD11b integrin surface expression was measured by FACS analysis. Furthermore, a label-free technology measuring ligand-induced dynamic mass redistribution was used to evaluate the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils to galanin. RESULTS GAL2 receptor expression was found in both human and murine polymorphonuclear neutrophils, galanin and GAL3 receptor were exclusively expressed in murine bone marrow polymorphonuclear neutrophils, and GAL1 receptor was not detectable in polymorphonuclear neutrophils of either species. Galanin treatment was not able to induce CD11b integrin surface expression or dynamic mass redistribution in human polymorphonuclear neutrophils and murine bone marrow polymorphonuclear neutrophils. However, galanin treatment significantly enhanced the response of polymorphonuclear neutrophils of both species to interleukin-8. CONCLUSION Galanin can be regarded as an immunomodulatory peptide as it can sensitize polymorphonuclear neutrophils towards pro-inflammatory cytokines in humans and mice.

Abstract
Alkaptonuria is an autosomal recessive trait resulting in an error of aromatic amino acids metabolism. Heyde's syndrome is a condition clustering together aortic valve stenosis and gastrointestinal bleeding from colonic angiodysplasia. At present, there is no report describing the association of the latter two syndromes in the same patient. Here we present the case of a patient with severe aortic stenosis, alkaptonuria, and Heyde's syndrome. The patient underwent aortic valve replacement by means of a valvular bioprosthesis and the histological examination of the aortic cusps revealed calcific degeneration. This was associated with stromal degeneration characterized by extra-cellular deposition of granular, brownish-pigmented material along with macrophages and multiple foci of calfication showing the same brownish pigmentation. This configuration represents the typical pattern of homogentisic acid accumulation known as ochronosis. The postoperative course was uneventful and the echocardiographic follow-up at 6 months postoperatively showed good-functioning of the aortic valve bioprosthesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Regulatory T cells (T(REG)) represent a T cell subset able to modulate immune response by suppressing autoreactive T-lymphocytes. The evidence of a reduced number and an impaired function of this cell population in autoimmune/inflammatory chronic diseases led to the hypothesis of its involvement in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Glucocorticoid-induced TNFR-related protein (GITR) is a well known marker of murine T(REG) cells, but little is known in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of T(REG) cells in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the potential role of GITR as marker of human T(REG). METHODS Nineteen SLE patients and 15 sex- and age-matched normal controls (NC) were enrolled. CD4(+) T cells were magnetic sorted from peripheral blood by negative selection. Cell phenotype was analyzed through flow-cytometry using primary and secondary antibodies and real time polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) using TaqMan probes. RESULTS The CD25(high)GITR(high) subset was significantly decreased in SLE patients with respect to NC (0.37±0.21% vs 0.72±0.19%; p<0.05). On the opposite, the CD25⁻GITR(high) cell population was expanded in the peripheral blood of SLE patients (3.5±2.25 vs 0.70±0.32%, p<0.01). Interestingly, FoxP3 at mRNA level was expressed in both CD25⁻GITR(high) and CD25(high)GITR(high) cells, suggesting that both cell subsets have regulatory activity. CONCLUSIONS CD4(+)CD25⁻GITR(high) cells are increased in SLE as compared to NC. The expression of high level of GITR, but not CD25, on FoxP3+ cells appears to point to a regulatory phenotype of this peculiar T cell subset.

BACKGROUND Resistin could be the linkage between the adipose tissue and the insulin resistance. In humans, the role of resistin on metabolic and vascular homeostasis is not well defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between resistin expression and insulin resistance. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated the relationship between monocyte expression of mRNA and anthropometric and metabolic parameters of insulin resistance. We focused on the potential role of resistin on endothelial function. Thirty-nine patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and clinically free from cardiovascular disease, and 15 healthy subjects were included in this study. All subjects underwent clinical examination, assessment of haematochemical parameters, bioimpedentiometry, measurement of monocyte resistin mRNA and of brachial-artery flow-mediated vasodilation (FMV). Patients with MS showed higher levels of interleukin-6 (IL; 2.1 +/- 1.2 vs. 1.2 +/- 0.9 pg/mL, P < 0.05) and reduced FMV (5.4 +/- 3.9 vs. 8.3 +/- 3.1%, P < 0.05). The subjects were divided into two groups: (i) subjects with high expression mRNA resistin levels and (ii) subjects with low or not detectable; Group 1 was younger (50 +/- 13 vs. 59 +/- 11 years, P = 0.01), showed higher IL-6 values (2.3 +/- 1.2 vs. 1.6 +/- 1.2, P = 0.03) and lower values of FMV (4.3 +/- 2.8 vs. 7.4 +/- 3.9%, P = 0.003). With univariate analysis monocyte mRNA showed a significant positive correlation with waist circumference (r = 0.27, P < 0.05) and IL-6 (r = 0.26, P < 0.05) and a negative correlation with FMV (r = -0.38, P < 0.005). With multivariate regression analysis brachial-artery diameter, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, IL-6 and RNAm resistin expression were independent predictors of reduced FMV. CONCLUSIONS mRNA resistin negatively influences FMV, and is a possible in vivo index of endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract
Persistence of patent foramen ovale is frequent in adults and usually asymptomatic. We report the case of a patient in whom a patent foramen ovale was diagnosed after weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass and was not recognised preoperatively. Intraoperative transoesophageal echocardiography is pivotal for surgical decision-making and should be performed in all patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Abstract
We herein present the case of a 75-year-old woman undergoing double valve replacement who experienced a massive bronchial hemorrhage due to a Swan-Ganz catheter pulmonary artery perforation after weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass. Early institution of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation allowed treatment of severe hypoxemia, refractory to mechanical ventilation, and the discontinuation of hemoptysis. Once clinical stability was achieved, the patient underwent pulmonary artery angiography with successful pseudoaneurysm embolization. It is hoped that this information can provide further insight into the management of such a complication.

Abstract
We report the case of a 71-year-old man with creatinine clearance of 41 mL/min and acute anterior ST-segment elevation who underwent urgent coronary artery bypass grafting. A continuous intraoperative veno-arterial hemofiltration with high volumes of exchange (35 mL/kg/h) was used in a series for a miniaturized extracorporeal bypass system to minimize the inflammatory response and to protect the kidneys of this patient who had preoperative renal dysfunction. The patient had an uneventful postoperative recovery.

Abstract
This work presents the experience developed by the Radioisotope Metrology Laboratory (LMR), of the Argentine National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), as result of the accreditation process of the Quality System by ISO 17025 Standard. Considering the LMR as a calibration laboratory, services of secondary activity determinations and calibration of activimeters used in Nuclear Medicine were accredited. A peer review of the (alpha/beta)-gamma coincidence system was also carried out. This work shows in detail the structure of the quality system, the results of the accrediting audit and gives the number of non-conformities detected and of observations made which have all been resolved.

Abstract
Coronary perforation is a recognized hazard following cardiac catheterization and may lead to a catastrophic outcome. Prompt decision-making following diagnosis is of key importance. Whether to perform prolonged attempts at percutaneous repair or to promptly refer the patient for emergency surgery soon after diagnosis still remains a matter of debate. We report the case of a 78-year-old woman suffering from coronary artery perforation during left anterior descending coronary artery percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty-stenting, who underwent unsuccessful multiple prolonged attempts at percutaneous repair followed by subsequent successful emergency surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE After aortic valve replacement, the effects of a small functional prosthesis on the extent and pattern of regression of left ventricular hypertrophy and on clinical outcomes may be less significant in older patients with low cardiac output requirements. The objective of this study was therefore to determine whether patient-prosthesis mismatch affects left ventricular mass regression in the elderly. METHODS The population studied was made up of 88 patients over 65 years of age with pure aortic stenosis who underwent mechanical aortic valve replacement. The effective orifice area index was calculated for each patient on the basis of the projected prosthesis in vivo effective orifice area. It was considered a continuous variable and influence of its entire range of values on the extent of left ventricular mass regression was analyzed in a multivariate prediction model. RESULTS Even though, in the group with prosthesis-patient mismatch there was a trend for lower postoperative left ventricular mass index (115+/-24 g/m(2) vs 102+/-27 g/m(2), p=0.24) and postoperative peak trans-prosthetic gradients (32+/-9.8 mmHg vs 28.9+/-7.79 mmHg, p=0.35) these differences were not statistically significant. The prevalence of residual left ventricular hypertrophy at follow-up was 50% in the group with patient-prosthesis mismatch and 50% in the group without patient-prosthesis mismatch (p=0.83). In multivariate analysis the only factors associated with indexed left ventricular mass were the follow-up time (p=0.015, r(2)=0.22) and preoperative indexed left ventricular mass (p=0.0012, r(2)=0.11). CONCLUSIONS The major finding of our study is that patient-prosthesis mismatch does not affect left ventricular mass regression in patients older than 65 with pure aortic stenosis who underwent mechanical aortic valve replacement. In older patients with low cardiac output requirements, even a small change in the valve effective orifice area after aortic valve replacement with modern efficient mechanical prosthesis, will result in a marked reduction of pressure gradient and this will be associated with a significant regression of left ventricular mass.

Abstract
AIM Aim of this study is to evaluate anxiety and temperament characteristics in developmental age subjects who practised agonistic sport (individual or team sports) in comparison with a sample group of subjects who practice no agonistic sports. METHODS Sixty subjects aged from 10 to 16 years were enrolled in the study and divided into 3 groups: 20 subjects practised individual agonistic sport (Group A), 20 subjects practised team agonistic sports (Group B) and 20 subjects who practised non agonistic sport as control group, (Group C). The following tests were used: multidimensional anxiety scale for children (MASC) to evaluate anxiety, EAS scale (Buss e Plomin) to evaluate temperament (emotionability, activity, sociability and shyness for younger children). RESULTS MASC scale scores underline generalized anxiety with higher significantly score in subjects who practised agonistic sports (Group A and B) compared with Group C. Anxiety symptoms were more evident in subjects who practised individual discipline compared with those who practised team sports. EAS scale indicated that temperament of subjects who practised agonistic sport was characterised by a considerable aptitude for sociability with low emotionability/activity levels in comparison to control group. CONCLUSION None of the 3 groups showed a psychopathologic profile.

Abstract
EPR spectroscopy was applied to obtain qualitative and quantitative information on the radicals produced in disinfection processes of wastewater for agricultural reuse. The DEPMPO spin trap was employed to detect hydroxyl and carbon-centered short living radicals in two different peracetic acid solutions and a hydrogen peroxide solution used for water disinfection either in the absence or in the presence of UV-C irradiation. Moreover, three different kinds of water (wastewater, demineralized water, distilled water) were analysed in order to assess the contribution of Fenton reactions to the radical production. The spectroscopic results were discussed in relation to the efficiency of the different oxidizing agents and UV irradiation in wastewater disinfection evaluated as Escherichia Coli, Faecal and Total Coliforms inactivation.
