Cultural intelligence and proactive service performance: mediating and moderating role of leader's collaborative nature, cultural training and emotional labor

PURPOSE

Drawing on cultural intelligence and social exchange theories, this study examines cultural intelligence and its effects on proactive service performance and the mediating role of leader's collaborative nature and the moderating role of cultural training and emotional labor, particularly deep acting and surface acting, in the relationship between cultural intelligence and proactive service performance.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

The study sample comprised 510 healthcare practitioners. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the hypotheses.

FINDINGS

The results show that cultural intelligence positively influences proactive service performance. Additionally, leadership's collaborative nature influences proactive service performance. The moderating effect of cultural training and deep acting positively influences the relationship between cultural intelligence and proactive service performance. In contrast, surface acting reveals a reverse effect, thus exhibiting a positive effect on this relationship.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

These findings suggest that public healthcare organizations should pay more attention in improving deep acting, cultural training and leadership's collaborative nature for optimal service performance.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

The novelty of this study lies in its presentation of an integrated framework based on cultural intelligence and social exchange theories that can solve the contemporary challenges facing healthcare firms operating in emerging markets in integrating cultural intelligence and service performance.

Total quality management practices and corporate sustainable development in manufacturing companies: the mediating role of green innovation

Purpose

Manufacturing firms face increasing pressure to be more “greener” or environmentally friendly. Drawing upon the sustainable development (SD) theory and resource-based view, this study aims to examine the role of total quality management (TQM) and its effect on corporate SD (CSD). Also, this study focused on the mediating role of green innovation (GI).

Design/methodology/approach

This study used data from a time-lagged design with two waves that strengthened the hypothesized framework and used structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results showed a significant influence of TQM on CSD and GI. Also, GI positively affects CSD and fully mediates TQM and CSD relationships.

Practical implications

Important practical implications are integrating the quality indicators with sustainability and environmental dimensions. This study shall help the managers and policymakers in achieving their sustainability goals.

Originality/value

This study advances the prior literature and provides a noble approach of SD for TQM in manufacturing small and medium enterprises in an emerging country context.

Corporate social responsibility towards education and corporation performance in the UAE: the mediating role of corporation reputation

Purpose

This study aims to identify and understand the motivators of corporate social responsibility (CSR) toward education and its impact on a corporation's performance and reputation. This study examines the perceptions of CSR practice in education among the top 595 corporation representatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), their motivation for it and its impact on corporation reputation and performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research based on self-administered questionnaire responses from 595 respondents was conducted using a series of regression analyses.

Findings

The results of this study show reciprocity and involvement to be the most prominent motivators for UAE corporations to engage in CSR toward education, whereas altruism was not found to be a motivator. Additionally, the study found a positive relationship between CSR toward education and corporation performance, with partial mediation by corporation reputation.

Practical implications

The findings of this study provide guidance for UAE policymakers to understand the appropriate motivators to encourage corporations to engage in CSR activities. They help potential recipient educational institutions to strategically develop fundraising programs by factoring in what motivates corporations to donate to education. Additionally, they enlighten corporations on how CSR toward education enhances their corporation reputation and performance.

Originality/value

This is a pioneering study in the field of CSR toward education in the UAE. It provides crucial insights into what motivates UAE-based corporations to engage in CSR toward education and how it impacts their reputation and performance. It also explores the benefits corporations reap by specifically focusing their CSR initiatives and investments toward education.

Ethical climate, corporate social responsibility and organizational performance: evidence from the UAE public sector

Purpose

Research about ethical governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the United Arab Emirates is still in its infancy. This study aims to explore the public sector employee’s perception toward ethical climate, codes of ethics and CSR and its impact on organizational performance. This research sheds light on the link between formalized ethical procedures and employee responses including CSR, organizational engagement and organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 426 middle-level public sector employees in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, using structural equation modeling to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The findings of this study suggest that an ethical climate is an important organizational component, and that the incorporation of effective codes of ethics and CSR initiatives is desired. Perceptions of public sector employees are positively influenced by the organization’s ethical climate and CSR activities, which in turn affect organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study provides managerial insights for improving the ethical climate and CSR within the public sector context in the United Arab Emirates.

Practical implications

The study offers implications for public sector employers and points out that public sector employers should formulate policies to boost the ethics and CSR environment at workplace to attain competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the literature by being one of the first to study organizational ethical climate and CSR within a Middle Eastern public sector context and offers implications for theory and practice.

Determinants of organizational performance: a proposed framework

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on determinants that influence organizational performance and to develop a framework that could be beneficial for leaders.

Design/methodology/approach

– This paper uses a systematic review of articles on the factors that influence organizational performance. The purpose of this systematic review is to collect and summarize all empirical evidence from literature that fits the context of this study.

Findings

– The findings of the study have been weaved together in a proposed framework for the role of cognitive, emotional, and social competencies on leadership competencies that in turn influence both employee and organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

– This paper is a literature review, a framework on the determinants of organizational performance has been proposed but has not yet been tested empirically.

Practical implications

– Leaders can leverage the results of this study to enhance their leadership competencies for the purpose of improving the performance on both individual employee and organizational levels.

Originality/value

– There are few research-based studies on the determinants of organizational performance. This paper has identified key variables that play a significant role in helping organizations perform effectively.

HRM practices and organizational performance in the UAE banking sector

Purpose

– The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of human resource management (HRM) practices on organizational performance in the banking sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to test the mediating impact of organizational innovation on the HRM-organizational performance relationship, and to test HRM practices as mediator of the relationship between innovation strategy and organizational innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

– Data were collected from 168 managers working in UAE banks. A structured questionnaire containing standard scales of HRM practices, innovation strategy, organizational innovation, organizational performance, and some demographic variables was used. The analytical method used to empirically test the hypotheses proposed is the structural equation modeling technique using PLS. The two steps are: the assessment of the outer model and the assessment of the inner model. Moreover, a bootstrapping method is employed in order to test indirect effects.

Findings

– Results found that organizational innovation fully mediates HRM-organizational performance link. Moreover, with the existence of innovation strategy, HRM mediates the relationship between innovation strategy and organizational innovation.

Research limitations/implications

– The limitations of common method bias and cross-sectional data are discussed in light of implications for future research. Nevertheless, the results provide new insights on the influence of HRM on organization innovation and performance in a non-Western context of the UAE by testing the role of some mediators in influencing the relationship between HRM and performance.

Practical implications

– In general, enhancing the effectiveness of HRM can result in higher level of performance and innovation. In particular, the choice of an innovation strategy implies the use of an effective incentive-based compensation, training and development, recruitment and selection and performance appraisal.

Originality/value

– This study is considered the first study to examine the mediating role of organizational innovation on the relationship between HRM and organizational performance in the Middle East. Also, the study is the first study to test the role of HRM as a mediator for the innovation strategy-innovation performance relationship in a non-Western context.

Impaired neutralizing activity by transplacental measles antibodies in infants born to HIV-1-infected mothers

AIM

Growing numbers of newborns are saved from HIV infection through increased access to mother-to-child transmission prevention programmes. The maternally derived humoral immunity of these children might be impaired, both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality, with consequences for the timing of immunization against measles.

METHODS

A cell-ELISA technique compared the neutralizing activity on Edmonston strain measles virus of sera from 1- to 4-month-old infants. Ten serum specimens came from noninfected infants of HIV-infected mothers and another 10 from infants of healthy mothers. The sera were matched for the level of conventional ELISA measles antibodies.

RESULTS

Reflecting infection of the Vero cells by non-neutralized virus, optical density values were significantly higher for the sera from the children of the HIV-infected mothers than for those of the noninfected mothers (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Maternally derived protection against measles may be impaired by the mother's HIV infection, relating to the quality rather than to the quantity of transplacental antibodies. Selective, early immunization with live attenuated measles vaccine should be evaluated in noninfected children of HIV-1-infected mothers.

Diagnostic and prognostic role of galectin 3 expression in cutaneous melanoma

Many of the histopathologic criteria used to diagnose melanoma overlap with atypical but otherwise benign naevi such as dysplastic or Spitz naevi. Galectin-3 is a member of the galectin gene family and is expressed at elevated levels in a variety of neoplastic cell types. The aim of the present study was to investigate the diagnostic value of galectin-3 expression compared with homatropine methyle bromide-45(HMB-45) (one of the established and widely used immunohistochemical melanocytic markers) together with assessment of its prognostic value in melanoma lesions. This study was carried out on 21 cases of melanoma and 20 benign pigmented naevi. Galectin-3 was expressed in all the examined benign and malignant melanocytic lesions. The nucleocytoplasmic pattern of galectin-3 appeared in malignant cases only with 42.86% sensitivity, 100% specificity, and 70.73% accuracy. This pattern tended to be associated with thick melanoma (P = 0.08) and reduced survival (P = 0.22). The intensity of galectin-3 assessed by H-score was significantly of higher values in malignant lesions compared with benign lesions (P < 0.0001). The best cut-off value for discrimination between benign and malignant melanocytic lesions was 295 with 95% sensitivity, 70% specificity, and 83% accuracy. The diagnostic power of galectin-3 in distinguishing between benign and malignant melanocytic lesions relies on the pattern and the intensity of its expression. The nucleocytoplasmic pattern of galectin-3 expression carries greater probability of a malignant phenotype and a poor prognostic impact on patients' outcome.

Immunohistochemical expression of cyclin A in testicular biopsies of fertile and infertile men: correlation with the morphometry of seminiferous tubules

Cyclin A is a member of the cyclin family of proteins, which are required for both the mitotic and meiotic divisions that characterise spermatogenesis in human and other mammalian species. The data on cyclin A expression in various human spermatogenic disorders and its relationship to the morphology of seminiferous tubules are not well clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of cyclin A in testicular biopsies of different spermatogenic disorders correlating with the morphology of seminiferous tubules using morphometry tools. Immunohistochemical evaluation of cyclin A was carried out on testicular biopsies obtained from 48 infertile males (nonobstructive azoospermia) and 15 normal subjects together with using semiautomatic morphometric analysis for evaluation of seminiferous tubules. Cyclin A is expressed in 100% of normal and hypospermatogenesis groups and in 80% of maturation arrest group, with complete absence in Sertoli cell only group. In positive cases, cyclin A stained the nuclei of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes with a higher intensity of expression in normal cases compared with infertile group. Cyclin A expression was significantly associated with the different examined morphometric parameters. Cyclin A is involved in both mitosis and meiosis of human spermatogenesis as it is expressed in spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. Morphometry of human testis is intimately correlated with the testicular histopathology.

Interleukin 10 gene polymorphisms and development of post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in a selected sudanese population

Background

Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a cutaneous form of disease that develops at variable times after individuals have received treatment for clinical visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The study aimed to investigate the possible role of interleukin 10 (IL−10) and development of PKDL.

Methods

77 families composed of 41 complete case-parent trios and 36 case-parent pairs from the Masalit ethnic group were genotyped for 3 IL10 promoter polymorphisms: −1082A/G, −819C/T and −592C/A.

Results

Single point analysis using the transmission disequilibrium test showed no evidence of association between any of these IL10 promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and development of PKDL. Haplotype analysis performed using TRANSMIT showed borderline significance between PKDL and the haplotype AA across −592C/A and −1082A/G (p = 0.053). Haplotypes GCC (0.33) and ATA (0.30) were the common haplotypes in this Sudanese population. Allele frequencies for the 3 SNPs differed significantly in Sudan compared to other African (Gambian, Malawian, YRI) populations.

Conclusion

There is no evidence for an association between 3 SNPs in the IL10 gene promoter and susceptibility to PKDL in the Masalit ethnic group in Sudan, although some evidence for haplotype association was observed.

Pre-incisional epidural magnesium provides pre-emptive and preventive analgesia in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy

BACKGROUND

This prospective, randomized, double-blind study was designed to evaluate the preemptive and preventive analgesic efficacy of adding magnesium to a multimodal regimen of patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy.

METHODS

Ninety patients were randomly assigned to one of the three groups. Pre-magnesium patients received bolus of magnesium 50 mg epidurally before induction of anaesthesia followed by infusion of 10 mg h(-1) until end of surgery. Post-magnesium patients received epidural saline during the same time periods plus bolus epidural magnesium 50 mg at the end of surgery. Patients in the control group received epidural saline during all three periods. Patients in the magnesium groups received PCEA with fentanyl 1 microg ml(-1), bupivacaine 0.08%, and magnesium 1 mg ml(-1) after operation. Patients in the control group received PCEA with fentanyl 1 microg ml(-1) and bupivacaine 0.08%. Data were recorded for three postoperative days.

RESULTS

There were significantly lower pain scores on rest or movement in the pre-magnesium group compared with the post-magnesium and control groups (P<0.05). The daily analgesic consumption in the pre-magnesium group was significantly less than the other two groups (P<0.05) and the dose consumed in the post-magnesium group was significantly smaller than the control group (P<0.05). The groups were similar with respect to haemodynamic and respiratory variables, sedation, pruritus, nausea, and vomiting.

CONCLUSIONS

Continuous epidural magnesium started before anaesthesia provided preemptive, preventive analgesia, and an analgesic-sparing effect that improved postoperative analgesia without increasing the incidence of side-effects.

Prognostic Value of Pre-operative Assesment of Serum Carcino-embryonic Antigen and Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 Levels in Colorectal Carcinoma

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent and aggressive neoplasms. It is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States and is a significant overall health problem. Tumor markers are substances synthesized and excreted by tumor tissues that can be detected in abnormal concentrations in serum, urine, and other body fluids. Two such markers, Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), are useful in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of colorectal carcinoma. This study attempted to evaluate the clinical and prognostic value of the two markers using forty patients with CRC and ten healthy persons as a control group. All patients with CRC showed highly significant increases in CEA and CA-19-9 compared to the control group (p <  0.001), and there was a highly significant increase in the level of CEA in more advanced tumor stages, (p <  0.01). Regression analysis showed a significant correlation between CEA and CA-19-9 (p <  0.05; r = 0.35) and significant increases in CEA in rectal tumors compared to those located in the colon; in males compared to females (p <  0.05); and also a highly significant increase in patients over 60 years of age (p < 0.01) but no relation between CA 19-9 level and age, sex, and site of tumor. These data suggest that serum levels of CEA and CA-19-9 can be clinically useful in the diagnosis and staging of colorectal carcinoma.

Ketamine reduces swallowing-evoked pain after paediatric tonsillectomy

BACKGROUND

Ketamine efficacy as an analgesic adjuvant has been studied in several clinical settings with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ketamine on spontaneous and swallowing-evoked pain after tonsillectomy.

METHODS

Fifty children were randomized to receive premedication with either ketamine 0.1 mg kg(-1) i.m. or placebo given 20 min before induction of a standard general anaesthesia. All children received rectal diclofenac 2 mg kg(-1) and fentanyl 1 micro g kg(-1) i.v. before surgery.

RESULTS

The ketamine group showed significantly lower pain scores both at rest and on swallowing, with less total paracetamol consumption (P < 0.05) during the 24 h after surgery. Significantly more patients required postoperative morphine titration in the control group (P < 0.05). The time to the first oral intake, and duration of i.v. hydration, were significantly shorter and the quality of oral intake was significantly better in the ketamine group (P < 0.05). There were no differences in the incidence of vomiting or dreaming between the groups.

CONCLUSION

Premedication with a small dose of ketamine reduces swallowing-evoked pain after tonsillectomy in children who received an analgesic regimen combining an opioid and a NSAID.
