Development of Asymmetric Vection for Radial Expansion or Contraction Motion: Comparison Between School-Age Children and Adults

Vection is illusory self-motion elicited by visual stimuli and is more easily induced by radial contraction than expansion flow in adults. The asymmetric feature of vection was reexamined with 18 younger (age: 6–8 years) and 19 older children (age: 9–11 years) and 20 adults. In each experimental trial, participants observed either radial expansion or contraction flow; the latency, cumulative duration, and saturation of vection were measured. The results indicated that the latency for contraction was significantly shorter than that for expansion in all age-groups. In addition, the latency and saturation were significantly shorter and greater, respectively, in the younger or older children compared with the adults, regardless of the flow pattern. These results indicate that the asymmetry in vection for expansion or contraction flow emerges by school age, and that school-age children experience significantly more rapid and stronger vection than adults.

Effects of auditory information on self-motion perception during simultaneous presentation of visual shearing motion

Recent studies have found that self-motion perception induced by simultaneous presentation of visual and auditory motion is facilitated when the directions of visual and auditory motion stimuli are identical. They did not, however, examine possible contributions of auditory motion information for determining direction of self-motion perception. To examine this, a visual stimulus projected on a hemisphere screen and an auditory stimulus presented through headphones were presented separately or simultaneously, depending on experimental conditions. The participant continuously indicated the direction and strength of self-motion during the 130-s experimental trial. When the visual stimulus with a horizontal shearing rotation and the auditory stimulus with a horizontal one-directional rotation were presented simultaneously, the duration and strength of self-motion perceived in the opposite direction of the auditory rotation stimulus were significantly longer and stronger than those perceived in the same direction of the auditory rotation stimulus. However, the auditory stimulus alone could not sufficiently induce self-motion perception, and if it did, its direction was not consistent within each experimental trial. We concluded that auditory motion information can determine perceived direction of self-motion during simultaneous presentation of visual and auditory motion information, at least when visual stimuli moved in opposing directions (around the yaw-axis). We speculate that the contribution of auditory information depends on the plausibility and information balance of visual and auditory information.

Visual rotation axis and body position relative to the gravitational direction: Effects on circular vection

The visual–vestibular conflict theory asserts that visual–vestibular conflicts reduce vection and that vection strength is reduced with an increasing discrepancy between actual and expected vestibular activity. Most studies support this theory, although researchers have not always accepted them. To ascertain the conditions under which the theory of the visual–vestibular conflict can be applied, we measured circular vection strength accompanied by manipulation of the visual–otolith conflict by setting the axes of visual global motion (pitch, roll, and yaw) as either earth-horizontal or earth-vertical, using three different body positions (supine, left-lateral recumbent, and sitting upright). When the smaller stimulus was used, roll vection strength was greater with the visual–otolith conflict than without it, which contradicts the visual–vestibular conflict theory. We confirmed this result, as observers were able to distinguish circular vection from an illusory body tilt. Moreover, with observers in an upright position, the strength of yaw vection, which does not involve the visual–otolith conflict, increased and was almost equal to that of roll vection, which involves the visual–otolith conflict. This suggests that if the visual stimulus covers the entire visual field, the strength of circular vection around the earth-vertical axis exceeds that around the earth-horizontal axis, which is a finding consistent with the visual–vestibular conflict theory.

Accessing the Orbital Roof via an Eyelid Incision: The Transpalpebral Approach

THIS ARTICLE OUTLINES A NEW SURGICAL TECHNIQUE FOR ACCESSING THE ORBITAL ROOF: the transpalpebral approach. It involves making an incision on the double fold of the upper eyelid, then dissecting the orbital septum and the orbicular muscle of the eye. This exposes the orbital roof and enables the surgeon to approach without a coronal incision of the scalp; the direct eyelid incision provides adequate workspace. We use this approach in three orbital roof fractures and one orbital hemangioma. This orbital approach offers a simpler surgical technique, a less invasive one, and still provides excellent exposure of the superior orbital cavity.

Effects of visually simulated roll motion on vection and postural stabilization

Background

Visual motion often provokes vection (the induced perception of self-motion) and postural movement. Postural movement is known to increase during vection, suggesting the same visual motion signal underlies vection and postural control. However, self-motion does not need to be consciously perceived to influence postural control. Therefore, visual motion itself may affect postural control mechanisms. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of visual motion and vection on postural movements during and after exposure to a visual stimulus motion.

Methods

Eighteen observers completed four experimental conditions, the order of which was counterbalanced across observers. Conditions corresponded to the four possible combinations of rotation direction of the visually simulated roll motion stimulus and the two different visual stimulus patterns. The velocity of the roll motion was held constant in all conditions at 60 deg/s. Observers assumed the standard Romberg stance, and postural movements were measured using a force platform and a head position sensor affixed to a helmet they wore. Observers pressed a button when they perceived vection. Postural responses and psychophysical parameters related to vection were analyzed.

Results

During exposure to the moving stimulus, body sway and head position of all observers moved in the same direction as the stimulus. Moreover, they deviated more during vection perception than no-vection-perception, and during no-vection-perception than no-visual-stimulus-motion. The postural movements also fluctuated more during vection-perception than no-vection-perception, and during no-vection-perception than no-visual-stimulus-motion, both in the left/right and anterior/posterior directions. There was no clear habituation for vection and posture, and no effect of stimulus type.

Conclusion

Our results suggested that visual stimulus motion itself affects postural control, and supported the idea that the same visual motion signal is used for vection and postural control. We speculated that the mechanisms underlying the processing of visual motion signals for postural control and vection perception operate using different thresholds, and that a frame of reference for body orientation perception changed along with vection perception induced further increment of postural sway.

Effects of ifenprodil on voltage-gated tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels in rat sensory neurons

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

To examine a possible mechanism for the antinociceptive action of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist ifenprodil, we compared its effects with those of ketamine on tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons, which play an important role in the nociceptive pain pathway.

METHODS

Experiments were performed on dorsal root ganglion neurons from Sprague-Dawley rats, recordings of whole-cell membrane currents being made using patch-clamp technique.

RESULTS

Both drugs blocked tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ currents dose dependently, their half-maximal inhibitory concentrations being 145+/-12.1 micromol (ketamine) and 2.6+/-0.95 micromol (ifenprodil). Ifenprodil shifted the inactivation curve for tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels in the hyperpolarizing direction and shifted the activation curve in the depolarizing direction. Use-dependent blockade of tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels was more marked with ifenprodil than with ketamine. When paired with lidocaine, these drugs produced similar additive inhibitions of tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channel activity.

CONCLUSIONS

The observed suppressive effects on tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channel activity may, at least in part, underlie the antinociceptive effects of these N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists.

Effects of alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists on tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

When intrathecally or epidurally administered, alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists produce potent antinociception by affecting the activity of primary afferent fibres and spinal cord neurons. Recent reports have indicated that in dorsal root ganglion neurons, tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels play important roles in the conduction of nociceptive sensation. We therefore investigated the effects of alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists on tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ currents.

METHODS

Using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we recorded tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ currents from rat dorsal root ganglion neurons.

RESULTS

Both clonidine and dexmedetomidine reduced the peak amplitude of the tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ current concentration- and use-dependently. The concentration required for a half-maximal effect was significantly lower for dexmedetomidine (58.0 +/- 10.2 micromol) than for clonidine (257.2 +/- 30.9 micromol) at holding potential -70 mV. The current inhibitions induced by these agonists were not prevented by 1 micromol yohimbine, an alpha2-adrenoceptor antagonist. Both clonidine and dexmedetomidine shifted the inactivation curve for the tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ current in the hyperpolarizing direction. The combinations clonidine with lidocaine and dexmedetomidine with lidocaine produced an additive blockade-type interaction on the tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ current.

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that a direct inhibition of tetrodotoxin-resistant Na+ channels may contribute to the antinociceptive effects of clonidine and dexmedetomidine when used as additives to regional anaesthesia.

Access-control and interlock-signal systems for the LHD experimental hall

An access-control system has been developed and installed at the National Institute for Fusion Science. The system uses an interlock-signal system and a group-access-control system to safeguard the operation of the large helical device. In this paper, the access-control system is described along with its features, advantages and disadvantages, and benefits.

An alpha-fetoprotein producing pancreatic cystadenocarcinoma

An autopsy case of an 83-year-old Japanese woman with pancreatic cancer with significantly elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein levels is reported. The pancreatic tumor was a mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with multiple metastasis to the liver. The immunohistochemistry for alpha-fetoprotein revealed positive reactivity in the cytoplasm of cancer cells in the primary and liver metastatic lesions. The current case is the first reported in which mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas produced alpha-fetoprotein.

Anti-pituitary antibodies in patients with hypopituitarism and their families: longitudinal observation

In an attempt to investigate the clinical significance of anti-pituitary antibodies in patients with hypopituitarism, anti-pituitary antibody in plasma was examined in 10 such patients (7 cases of isolated ACTH deficiency, 1 of partial hypopituitarism, and 2 of Sheehan's syndrome), on two or three occasions with an interval of more than 6 months (longitudinal study). In a total of 16 relatives of these 4 patients (2 cases of Sheehan's syndrome, one in each of partial hypopituitarism and isolated ACTH deficiency) and one patient not involved in the longitudinal study, anti-pituitary antibodies were also examined (family study). Anti-pituitary antibodies reacting with rat pituitary cytoplasmic antigens (pituitary cell antibodies: PCA) and pituitary cell surface antibodies (PCSA) reacting with GH3 cells and/or AtT-20 cells were measured with indirect immunofluorescence. The longitudinal study revealed the disappearance of antibodies in 3 patients, 2 PCA positive and one both PCA and PCSA positive. In 3 patients, altered antibody titers or a newly appearing antibody were found during the follow-up period. In 4 patients, the pituitary antibodies were negative during the follow-up periods. Of 16 family members studied, positive PCA was found in 3 members (2 in the families of patients with PCA positive Sheehan's syndrome, and 1 in the family of the patients with PCA positive partial hypopituitarism). Positive PCSA was found in 4 members (one in each of families of patients with partial hypopituitarism and isolated ACTH deficiency and of two cases of Sheehan's syndrome), and weakly positive PCSA was found in one family member of a patients with PCA positive Sheehan's syndrome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Properties and repeated use of a reversibly soluble-insoluble yeast lytic enzyme

A yeast lytic enzyme was covalently immobilized on an enteric coating polymer, Eudragit S, that is reversibly soluble and insoluble (S-IS) depending on the pH of the reaction medium. The yeast lytic enzyme immobilized on Eudragit S (Y-E) showed a sharp response of solubility to slight changes in pH without decrease in enzymatic activity. The specific activity per amount of enzyme protein of Y-E for dry yeast cells was about two-thirds that of the native enzyme. In both lysis reactions of dry and pressed baker's yeast cells, changing the pH of the reaction medium from 7.0 to 4.8 at an appropriate interval allows the insoluble Y-E and the reaction products (soluble protein for dry yeast cells and invertase and soluble protein for pressed baker's yeast cells) to be repeatedly separated. The reaction method using a reversible S-IS enzyme is a promising procedure for repeated use of the enzyme in a heterogeneous reaction system containing yeast cells as a substrate.
