Transient contribution of the sphenoid ala major to the socket of the temporomandibular joint in near-term fetuses. Anat Rec (Hoboken) 2024. Abstract
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex structure that plays a vital role in the movement of the jaw. Some anatomy and dental textbooks show that, at the medial margin, the TMJ capsule attaches to a suture between the sphenoid ala major and the temporal bone squamosa. In near-term fetuses, the ala major extends posterolaterally to approach the TMJ. In this study, we aimed to investigate the contribution of the sphenoid ala major to the socket of the TMJ in near-term fetuses. We examined histological sections from 22 human fetuses (approximately 15-40 weeks). At midterm, the lateral and superior walls of the TMJ cavity were formed by the temporal bone squamosa, whereas the ala major was distant from the joint. However, at near-term, the ala major formed the medial wall of almost the entire part of the joint cavity. The top of the TMJ was attached to both the squamosa and ala major, with the condylar head consistently separated from the sphenoid by the joint disk. We observed a significant descent of the middle cranial fossa in near-term fetuses, which brought the ala major close to the TMJ. This transient position of the TMJ near the sphenoid is likely due to brain enlargement and posterolateral growth of the ala major. After birth, occlusion causes the anterior growth of the mandibular fossa of the squamosa, which moves the ala major away from the TMJ. Similarly, the lateral growth of the sphenoid toward the squamosa suture may also stop in children.

Abstract
A rare case of an anomalous location of the orifice of the coronary artery was found in a 99-year-old male cadaver undergoing routine dissection. The presence of the right coronary artery (RCA), left coronary artery (LCA), and conus artery (conus branch) originating from the right Valsalva sinus are the characteristic findings of this case. Then, the LCA passed through the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The LCA and RCA branches were normal. These findings are useful for future surgical procedures, including cardiac catheterization.

Growth of the brachial nerve plexus with reference to topographical relation of the medianus nerve ansa with the thoracic wall and shoulder: a histologic study using human embryos and fetuses. Surg Radiol Anat 2024; 46:443-449. [PMID: 38431890 DOI: 10.1007/s00276-024-03317-w] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/07/2023] [Accepted: 01/26/2024] [Indexed: 03/05/2024]
Abstract
BACKGROUND There is currently no information on positional changes in the brachial nerve plexus during prenatal growth. The subclavian-axillary artery passing through the medianus nerve ansa is considered a good landmark for evaluating the height of the plexus. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used histologic sections from 9 embryos and 17 fetuses (approximately 6-15 weeks of gestational age) to identify the height of the ansa by referring to the level of the rib and the glenohumeral joint. RESULTS The nerve ansa was usually (23 plexuses) observed at the level of the first and/or second ribs. However, it was sometimes observed above the first rib, at a distance equal to or more than an intercostal width (7 plexuses). In the latter group, the ansa was usually located below the glenohumeral joint. Thus, the joint was located higher than the first rib, although the upper extremities were in the anatomic position for all specimens. The left-right difference in the height of the plexus corresponded to or was less than the width of the first intercostal space. Despite the synchronized growth between the thorax and shoulder girdle, the brachial plexus showed a considerable variation in comparative height; the range corresponded to twice of an intercostal width. Whether the nerve plexus is located high or low is determined at an early developmental stage and is maintained during the later growth stages. CONCLUSION The high-positioned plexus might cause nerve injury at delivery, followed by a glenohumeral joint deformity because of the fragility without fixation in the thorax.

Sphenomandibular ligament and degenerating Meckel's cartilage revisited: Sequential variations with temporal bone deformity for ligament attachment in near-term human fetuses. Abstract
BACKGROUND The sphenomandibular ligament (SML) is considered to originate from Meckel's cartilage (MC). However, no study has examined how the os goniale contributes to SML development. METHODS Semiserial histological sections of heads from 18 near-term fetuses at 27-40 weeks of gestation were examined. OBSERVATIONS The os goniale and the anterior process of the malleus (AP) provided a long, bar-like membranous bone complex that passed through the petrotympanic and tympanosquamosal fissures. Notably, the AP-goniale complex is sometimes elongated inferiorly to join the SML (n = 4 specimens). Along the complex in the bone fissures, a degenerating MC was often present (n = 12). With (n = 6) or without (n = 3) the MC remnant, the tympanic bone (TYB) protruded inferomedially near the tympanosquamosal fissure, and it sometimes continued to a cartilaginous SML (n = 3). The temporal bone squamosa or petrosa provided a similar bony process approaching the SML. The middle meningeal artery often ran between the sphenoid and petrosa. CONCLUSIONS Most of the specimens (n = 15) exhibited a sequential change from a cartilaginous SML as a continuation of the MC remnant to the ligament after the disappearance of the cartilage. The degenerating MC appeared to cause transformation from the AP-goniale complex and/or TYB to "another ligament" that replaced the usual SML at the upper part. Near the MC remnant, a similar transformation was also suggested on the squamosa or petrosa. The sphenoid spine appeared to originate often from the sphenoid ala major but sometimes from the TYB.

Effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease: a prespecified secondary analysis from the empa-kidney trial. Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol 2024; 12:39-50. [PMID: 38061371 PMCID: PMC7615591 DOI: 10.1016/s2213-8587(23)00321-2] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/05/2023] [Revised: 10/24/2023] [Accepted: 10/25/2023] [Indexed: 12/23/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce progression of chronic kidney disease and the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients. However, their effects on kidney disease progression in some patients with chronic kidney disease are unclear because few clinical kidney outcomes occurred among such patients in the completed trials. In particular, some guidelines stratify their level of recommendation about who should be treated with SGLT2 inhibitors based on diabetes status and albuminuria. We aimed to assess the effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease both overall and among specific types of participants in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial. METHODS EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA), and included individuals aged 18 years or older with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or with an eGFR of 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher. We explored the effects of 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily versus placebo on the annualised rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR slope), a tertiary outcome. We studied the acute slope (from randomisation to 2 months) and chronic slope (from 2 months onwards) separately, using shared parameter models to estimate the latter. Analyses were done in all randomly assigned participants by intention to treat. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110. FINDINGS Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and then followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroups of eGFR included 2282 (34·5%) participants with an eGFR of less than 30 mL/min per 1·73 m2, 2928 (44·3%) with an eGFR of 30 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, and 1399 (21·2%) with an eGFR 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2 or higher. Prespecified subgroups of uACR included 1328 (20·1%) with a uACR of less than 30 mg/g, 1864 (28·2%) with a uACR of 30 to 300 mg/g, and 3417 (51·7%) with a uACR of more than 300 mg/g. Overall, allocation to empagliflozin caused an acute 2·12 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (95% CI 1·83-2·41) reduction in eGFR, equivalent to a 6% (5-6) dip in the first 2 months. After this, it halved the chronic slope from -2·75 to -1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (relative difference 50%, 95% CI 42-58). The absolute and relative benefits of empagliflozin on the magnitude of the chronic slope varied significantly depending on diabetes status and baseline levels of eGFR and uACR. In particular, the absolute difference in chronic slopes was lower in patients with lower baseline uACR, but because this group progressed more slowly than those with higher uACR, this translated to a larger relative difference in chronic slopes in this group (86% [36-136] reduction in the chronic slope among those with baseline uACR <30 mg/g compared with a 29% [19-38] reduction for those with baseline uACR ≥2000 mg/g; ptrend<0·0001). INTERPRETATION Empagliflozin slowed the rate of progression of chronic kidney disease among all types of participant in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial, including those with little albuminuria. Albuminuria alone should not be used to determine whether to treat with an SGLT2 inhibitor. FUNDING Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly.

Impact of primary kidney disease on the effects of empagliflozin in patients with chronic kidney disease: secondary analyses of the EMPA-KIDNEY trial. Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol 2024; 12:51-60. [PMID: 38061372 DOI: 10.1016/s2213-8587(23)00322-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/05/2023] [Revised: 10/24/2023] [Accepted: 10/25/2023] [Indexed: 12/23/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The EMPA-KIDNEY trial showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of the primary composite outcome of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease mainly through slowing progression. We aimed to assess how effects of empagliflozin might differ by primary kidney disease across its broad population. METHODS EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA). Patients were eligible if their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher at screening. They were randomly assigned (1:1) to 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily or matching placebo. Effects on kidney disease progression (defined as a sustained ≥40% eGFR decline from randomisation, end-stage kidney disease, a sustained eGFR below 10 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or death from kidney failure) were assessed using prespecified Cox models, and eGFR slope analyses used shared parameter models. Subgroup comparisons were performed by including relevant interaction terms in models. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110. FINDINGS Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroupings by primary kidney disease included 2057 (31·1%) participants with diabetic kidney disease, 1669 (25·3%) with glomerular disease, 1445 (21·9%) with hypertensive or renovascular disease, and 1438 (21·8%) with other or unknown causes. Kidney disease progression occurred in 384 (11·6%) of 3304 patients in the empagliflozin group and 504 (15·2%) of 3305 patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·71 [95% CI 0·62-0·81]), with no evidence that the relative effect size varied significantly by primary kidney disease (pheterogeneity=0·62). The between-group difference in chronic eGFR slopes (ie, from 2 months to final follow-up) was 1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (95% CI 1·16-1·59), representing a 50% (42-58) reduction in the rate of chronic eGFR decline. This relative effect of empagliflozin on chronic eGFR slope was similar in analyses by different primary kidney diseases, including in explorations by type of glomerular disease and diabetes (p values for heterogeneity all >0·1). INTERPRETATION In a broad range of patients with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression, including a wide range of non-diabetic causes of chronic kidney disease, empagliflozin reduced risk of kidney disease progression. Relative effect sizes were broadly similar irrespective of the cause of primary kidney disease, suggesting that SGLT2 inhibitors should be part of a standard of care to minimise risk of kidney failure in chronic kidney disease. Topohistology of the cranial nerves IX-XII at the cranial base and upper parapharyngeal space: A histological study using human fetuses. Anat Rec (Hoboken) 2023. Abstract
The topographical relationships among the lower cranial nerves, internal carotid artery (ICA), and internal jugular vein (IJV) in the upper parapharyngeal neurovascular bundle remain obscure. Thus, details of the anatomy were examined in human fetus histology. We observed the horizontal histological sections from 20 midterm (9-18 weeks) and 12 near-term (28-40 weeks) fetuses. At the external skull base, the glossopharyngeal nerve crosses the anterior aspect of the IJV to reach the medially located Hyrtl's fissure in the petrous temporal bone. The nerve crossed the anterior aspect of the ICA medially near or below the first cervical nerve root. Below the hypoglossal nerve canal, the accessory nerve crosses the anterior or posterior aspects of the IJV and moves laterally. During the half-spiral course, the hypoglossal nerve was tightly attached to the posterolateral-anterior aspects of the vagus nerve and surrounded by a common nerve sheath. The glossopharyngeal ganglia sometimes extended inferiorly to the level of the hypoglossal nerve canal but were absent along the inferior course. The inferior vagal ganglion rarely extends above the occipital condyle. The superior cervical sympathetic ganglion occasionally extends above the first cervical nerve root. The IJV (or ICA) descends to the lateral (or medial) margins of the parapharyngeal neurovascular bundle. The glossopharyngeal (or accessory) nerve crosses the ICA (or IJV) to exit the bundle at the base of the skull (or below the hypoglossal nerve canal). The glossopharyngeal and vagus inferior ganglia differ at each site.

A marginal branch of the left hepatic artery running along the umbilical vein and supplying the anterior surface of the liver left lobe: a report of 5 cases in 12 Japanese human fetuses. Abstract
In human fetuses, the left hepatic artery (LHA) issues the marginal artery that runs along the umbilical vein and, sometimes, reaches the umbilicus. The further observation demonstrated that, in 5 of 12 Japanese midterm fetuses (crown-rump length mm: 46, 50, 54, 59, 102), the marginal artery issued not only a thin umbilical branch but also a liver parenchymal branch that took a posterosuperior recurrent course in a peritoneal fold and supplied the anterior surface of the liver left lobe (segment III). However, in 22 Spanish fetuses of which gestational ages corresponded to the Japanese ones, we did not find the parenchymal branch. Therefore, between human populations, there seemed to be a considerable difference in the incidence as to whether or not the marginal artery issues the liver parenchymal branch. The parenchymal branch might be degenerated at the later stages due to friction between the liver free surface and growing diaphragm.

Abstract
Recent molecular biology studies have revealed the process of nasal capsule determination. We aimed to create a fate map showing the association between the adult and embryonic components of the nasal wall and nasal capsule derivatives. We examined paraffin-embedded histological sections between 15 mid-term (9-16 weeks) and 12 near-term (27-40 weeks) foetuses. Until 15 weeks, membranous ossification occurred 'along' the capsular cartilage, contributing to the formation of the vomer, maxilla and bony nasal septum as well as the nasal, frontal and lacrimal bones. After 15 weeks, a wide lateral part of the capsule became thin and fragmented, and degenerative cartilage was observed near the lacrimal bone, in the three conchae, and at the inferolateral end of the capsule sandwiched between the maxilla and palatine bone. The disappearing cartilages appeared to be replaced by nearby membranous bones. This type of membranous ossification did not appear to use the capsular cartilage as a 'mould', although the perichondrium may have a role in inducing ossification. Calcified cartilage indicated endochondral ossification in the inferior concha until 15 weeks and, later, at the bases of three conchae and around the future sphenoid sinus (i.e. the concha sphenoidalis). The capsular cartilage extended antero-superiorly over the frontal bone and inserted into the nasal bone. At 40 weeks, the capsular cartilage remained in the cribriform plate and at the inferolateral end along the palatine bone. Consequently, less guidance from the nasal capsule seemed to provide great individual variation in the shape of the wide anterolateral wall of the nasal cavity.

Rectangular tapered short stem excellently preserves proximal bone mineral density preservation than tapered wedge short stem. Acta Orthop Belg 2023; 89:491-497. Abstract
Fitmore stem is a rectangular, tapered, short, cementless stem. A characteristic feature of this stem is that it provides rotational stability due to the high medullary occupancy achieved by its rectangular cross-section and thick antero- posterior width. We aimed to investigate the differences in periprosthetic bone remodelling between a rectangular- tapered short stem and a short tapered-wedge stem. Eighty patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty using a rectangular-tapered short stem (Fitmore) or a short tapered-wedge stem (Tri-Lock BPS) were enrolled in this study. Bone mineral densities (BMDs) in the seven Gruen zones were evaluated using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline, and at 6 and 24 months postoperatively. Peri-prosthetic BMD and clinical factors were assessed and compared. In addition, correlations between periprosthetic BMD changes and stem anteversion error were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient in the two groups. A significantly better postoperative periprosthetic BMD change was found in zones 1 and 7 in the rectangular-tapered group. Additionally, no significant correlation was observed between stem anteversion error and periprosthetic BMD changes in the rectangular-tapered groups. However, in the tapered-wedge group, there were significant negative correlations between the stem anteversion error and BMD changes at 6 months and 24 months in zones 1 and 7. In the rectangular-tapered group, a significantly better postoperative periprosthetic BMD change was found particularly in the region proximal to the stem. Rectangular-tapered short stem can be more resistant to rotation due to higher medullary occupancy and may lead to better periprosthetic BMD than the tapered-wedge short stem, especially in the proximal region of the stem.

Hepatic vein anatomy related to Laennec's capsule for liver resection. JOURNAL OF HEPATO-BILIARY-PANCREATIC SCIENCES 2023; 30:551-557. Abstract
BACKGROUND Laennec's capsule is the proper membrane covering the entire surface of the liver parenchyma, including around the Glissonean pedicles and hepatic veins. Laennec's capsule around the hepatic veins has been clinically reported to comprise two layers: the hepatic and cardiac Laennec's capsules. However, where the cardiac Laennec's capsule is derived from and the two capsules' separability are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the anatomy of the two capsules using cadaveric specimens. METHODS Histopathological examinations of autopsy specimens from four cadavers were conducted. Each specimen was sliced in the longitudinal section to include the pericardium, right hepatic vein (RHV), and inferior vena cava (IVC). Additionally, long-axis specimens of the RHV were obtained to determine the separability of the capsules and to examine the extent to which the capsules extended along the RHV. Laennec's capsule was estimated using elastic fiber staining. RESULTS The cardiac Laennec's capsule is derived from the pericardium (parietal and visceral) and diaphragm and runs parallel with the IVC and hepatic veins associated with the hepatic Laennec's capsule. The two capsules were separable micro- and macroscopically. The hepatic Laennec's capsule was observed from the root to the peripheral side and the cardiac Laennec's capsule from the root to the middle side of the hepatic vein. CONCLUSIONS The existence of the two layers of Laennec's capsule around the hepatic veins was confirmed histologically and they were separable. Identification and decollement of these layers would contribute to establishing safe and feasible anatomic liver resection techniques.

The so-called absorption process of the pulmonary vein into the left atrium of the heart: a histological study using human embryos and fetuses. Surg Radiol Anat 2023; 45:469-478. Abstract
BACKGROUND Embryonic pulmonary veins (PVs) are believed to be absorbed into the left atrium (LA) to provide an adult morphology in which "four" veins drain separately into the atrium. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serial histological sections were obtained from 27 human embryos and fetuses. RESULTS Between 5 and 6 weeks, the four PVs joined together to form a trunk-like structure (initial spatium pulmonalis) that was larger than the initial LA (two-ostia pattern). The cardiac nerves ran inferiorly along the posterior aspect of the four veins, as well as the spatium. At and until 7 weeks, the cardiac nerves were concentrated to elongate the nerve fold, and the latter separated the left PV trunk from the expanding LA (left spatium). Similarly, the right PV opened to a thick and deep LA recess (right spatium). At 8-12 weeks, depending on the growth of the LA, the opening of the left and right PVs became distant, and the spatium was elongated transversely. The left spatium was enlarged to open widely to the proper left atrium in contrast to the right spatium pushed anteriorly by the right atrium. The three-ostia pattern was transiently observed because of the lost delimitation between the left spatium and proper atrium. The myocardium was thin in the left spatium behind the left atrial nerve fold, whereas the right spatium was tube-like with a thick myocardium. CONCLUSIONS The four-ostia pattern seemed to be established at birth due to a drastically increased venous return from the lung, resulting in a flat smooth left atrial posterior wall.

Distally-extending muscle fibers across involved joints: study of long muscles and tendons of wrist and ankle in late-term fetuses and adult cadavers. Anat Cell Biol 2023; 56:46-53. Abstract
It is unclear whether forearm and crural muscle fibers extend distally across the wrist and ankle joints, respectively. We hypothesized, in late-term fetuses, an over-production of muscle bellies extending over the joint. Muscle fibers in histological sections from unilateral wrists and ankles of 16 late-term fetuses (30-40 weeks) were examined and compared with 15 adult cadavers. Muscle fibers of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) and flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) in fetuses, especially muscle bellies to the third and fourth fingers, were found to extend far distally beyond the radiocarpal joint. The extensor digitorum and extensor pollicis longus on the extensor side of the wrist were found to carry distally-extending muscle fibers, but these fibers did not extend beyond the distal end of the radius. In the ankle, most muscle bundles in the flexor hallucis longus (FHL), fibularis brevis (FB) and extensor digitorum longus extended distally beyond the talocrural joint, with most FB muscle fibers reaching the level of the talocalcaneal joint. In adult cadavers, muscle fibers of the FDP and FHL did not reach the levels of the radiocarpal and talocrural joints, respectively, whereas the FB muscle belly always reached the talocalcaneal joint. Similarly, some of the FDS reached the level of the radiocarpal joint. Generally, infants' movements at the wrist and ankle could result in friction injury to over-extended muscle. However, the calcaneal and FDP tendons might protect the FB and FDS tendons, respectively, from friction stress.

Bag-1 Protects Nucleus Pulposus Cells from Oxidative Stress by Interacting with HSP70. Biomedicines 2023; 11:biomedicines11030863. Abstract
Bcl-2-associated athanogene 1 (Bag-1) is a multifunctional prosurvival protein that binds to several intracellular targets and promotes cell survival. HSP70 and Raf-1 are important targets of Bag-1; however, the protective function of Bag-1 in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells remains unclear. In this study, we determined the effects of Bag-1 on NP cells under oxidative stress induced by treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). We found that Bag-1 was bound to HSP70, but Bag-1–Raf1 binding did not occur in NP cells. Bag-1 overexpression in NP cells enhanced cell viability and mitochondrial function and significantly suppressed p38/MAPKs phosphorylation during oxidative stress, although NP cells treated with a Bag-1 C-terminal inhibitor, which is the binding site of HSP70 and Raf-1, decreased cell viability and mitochondrial function during oxidative stress. Furthermore, the phosphorylation of the ERK/MAPKs was significantly increased in Bag-1 C-terminal inhibitor-treated NP cells without H2O2 treatment but did not change with H2O2 exposure. The phosphorylation of Raf-1 was not influenced by Bag-1 overexpression or Bag-1 C-terminal binding site inhibition. Overall, the results suggest that Bag-1 preferentially interacts with HSP70, rather than Raf-1, to protect NP cells against oxidative stress.

Lung fusion with the liver in chick and quail embryos. Anat Histol Embryol 2023. [PMID: 36881478 DOI: 10.1111/ahe.12913] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/23/2022] [Revised: 12/12/2022] [Accepted: 02/12/2023] [Indexed: 03/08/2023]
Abstract
Even in mammals with the diaphragm, the lung and liver are likely to attach mutually without separation by any structure in embryos. The aim of this study was to examine whether or not the lung attaches to the liver in embryonic development of birds without diaphragm. First, we ensured the topographical relation between the lung and liver in 12 human embryos at 5 weeks. After the serosal mesothelium was established, the human lung sometimes (3 embryos) attached tightly to the liver without interruption by the developing diaphragm in the pleuroperitoneal fold. Second, we observed the lung-liver interface in chick and quail embryos. At 3-5 days' incubation (stages 20-27), the lung and liver were fused at bilateral narrow areas just above the muscular stomach. Therein, mesenchymal cells, possibly derived from the transverse septum, were intermingled between the lung and liver. The interface tended to be larger in the quail than the chick. At and until 7 days' incubation, the fusion of the lung and liver disappeared and, instead, a membrane connected them bilaterally. The right membrane extended caudally to attach to the mesonephros and caudal vena cava. At 12 days' incubation, bilateral thick folds, containing the abdominal air sac and pleuroperitoneal muscle (striated muscle), separated the dorsally located lung from the liver. Therefore, the lung-liver fusion occurred transiently in birds. Rather than the presence of the muscular diaphragm, whether the lung and liver were fused seemed to depend on a timing and sequence of development of the mesothelial coverings of these viscera.

Development and growth of the calcaneal tendon sheath with special reference to its topographical relationship with the tendon of the plantaris muscle: a histological study of human fetuses. Surg Radiol Anat 2023; 45:247-253. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The calcaneal tendon sheath has several vascular routes and is a common site of inflammation. In adults, it is associated with the plantaris muscle tendon, but there are individual variations in the architecture and insertion site. We describe changes of the tendon sheath during fetal development. MATERIALS AND METHODS Histological sections of the unilateral ankles of 20 fetuses were examined, ten at 8-12 weeks gestational age (GA) and twelve at 26-39 weeks GA. RESULTS At 8-12 weeks GA, the tendon sheath simply consisted of a multilaminar layer that involved the plantaris tendon. At 26-39 weeks, each calcaneal tendon had a multilaminar sheath that could be roughly divided into three layers. The innermost layer was attached to the tendon and sometimes contained the plantaris tendon; the multilaminar intermediate layer contained vessels and often contained the plantaris tendon; and the outermost layer was thick and joined other fascial structures, such as a tibial nerve sheath and subcutaneous plantar fascia. The intermediate layer merged with the outermost layer near the insertion to the calcaneus. CONCLUSION In spite of significant variations among adults, the fetal plantar tendon was always contained in an innermost or intermediate layer of the calcaneal tendon sheath in near-term fetuses. After birth, mechanical stresses such as walking might lead to fusion or separation of the multilaminar sheath in various manners. When reconstruction occurs postnatally, there may be individual variations in blood supply routes and morphology of the distal end of the plantaris tendon.

Development and growth of the human fetal sacroiliac joint revisited: a comparison with the temporomandibular joint. Anat Cell Biol 2023:acb.22.189. Abstract
The human fetal sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is characterized by unequal development of the paired bones and delayed cavitation. Thus, during the long in utero period, the bony ilium becomes adjacent to the cartilaginous sacrum. This mor-phology may be analogous to that of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We examined horizontal histological sections of 24 fetuses at 10-30 weeks and compared the timing and sequences of joint cartilage development, cavitation, and ossification of the ilium. We also examined histological sections of the TMJ and humeroradial joint, because these also contain a disk or disk-like structure. In the ilium, endochondral ossification started in the anterior side of the SIJ, extended posteriorly and reached the joint at 12 weeks GA, and then extended over the joint at 15 weeks GA. Likewise, the joint cartilage appeared at the anterior end of the future SIJ at 12 weeks GA, and extended along the bony ilium posteriorly to cover the entire SIJ at 26 weeks GA. The cavitation started at 15 weeks GA. Therefore, joint cartilage development seemed to follow the ossification of the ilium by extending along the SIJ, and cavitation then occurred. This sequence "ossification, followed by joint cartilage formation, and then cavitation" did not occur in the TMJ or humeroradial joint. The TMJ had a periosteum-like membrane that covered the joint surface, but the humeroradial joint did not. After muscle contraction starts, it is likely that the mechanical stress from the bony ilium induces development of joint cartilage.

Umbilical cord vessels other than the umbilical arteries and vein: a histological study of midterm human fetuses. Anat Cell Biol 2022; 55:467-474. Abstract
At birth, the umbilical cord contains various types of thin vessels that are near and outside the umbilicus and separate from the umbilical arteries and vein. These vessels are regarded as the remnant "vitelline vessels" and are often called "umbilical vessels", although this terminology could lead to confusion with the true umbilical arteries and vein. No study has yet comprehensively examined these vessels using histological sections. Our examination of these vessels in 25 midterm fetuses (gestational age: 10-16 weeks) led to five major findings: (i) all specimens had umbilical branches of the inferior epigastric artery; (ii) 5 specimens had vitelline vein remnants; (iii) 4 specimens had a thin artery originating from the left hepatic artery that ran along the umbilical vein; (iv) 2 specimens had a so-called "para-umbilical vein" that was along the umbilical vein and reached the umbilicus; and (v) all specimens had lymphatic vessels originating from the umbilicus that ran caudally along the umbilical artery. The pelvic vein tributaries were well developed along the intra-abdominal umbilical artery, but did not reach the umbilicus. The lymphatic vessel was distinguished from the veins by an intraluminar cluster of lymphocytes attaching to the endothelium. The arterial branch in the umbilical cord did not accompany veins and lymphatic vessels, in contrast to the mother artery in the rectus abdominis. All these thin vessels seemed to be obliterated when the fibrous umbilical ring grew during late-term. The para-umbilical collateral vein in adults might develop outside the fibrous umbilical ring after birth.

Abstract
Neonicotinoid pesticides (NPs) are neurotoxic substances. They are highly effective as insecticides owing to their water solubility, permeability, and long-lasting activity. These molecules are structurally similar to nicotine and act as nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists. The administration of NPs to experimental animals reportedly causes neuromuscular and reproductive disorders. Moreover, recently reported problems caused by NPs include damage to land-dwelling creatures (such as mammals and birds), hydrobiology, and ecosystems. This review summarizes the recent reports on NP concentrations detected in river systems in several Japanese regions. These values were lower than the environmental standard values; however, seasonal variations were observed. Furthermore, reports on NP-induced testicular and ovarian toxicity were examined, revealing that the mechanism of injury is mainly driven by oxidative stress. The use of NPs is declining worldwide, except in Japan; therefore, continuous monitoring remains necessary.

A novel categorization of the muscular branches of the tibial nerve within the popliteal fossa. Ann Anat 2022; 245:151997. Abstract
BACKGROUND The muscular branches of the tibial nerve within the popliteal fossa innervate the gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, and popliteus muscles. Various branching patterns have been described in textbooks; however, the underlying fundamental rules explaining the patterns remain unclear. Understanding the fundamental rule explaining the branching pattern of the innervating nerves is essential for understanding the ontogeny of skeletal muscles. Therefore, this study aimed at establishing a theory to explain the branching pattern of the muscular branches of the tibial nerve within the popliteal fossa. METHODS The branching patterns of the muscular branches of the tibial nerve within the popliteal fossa were examined macroscopically in 62 lower limbs derived from 31 adult cadavers (22 males and 9 females, aged 49-95 years). RESULTS The branch to the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle invariably arose from the posteromedial side of the tibial nerve. The branches to the soleus muscle and lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle had a common trunk in all the lower limbs and invariably arose from the posterolateral side. The branches to the plantaris and popliteus muscles arose anteriorly from the tibial nerve in this order (plantaris branch first, followed by the popliteus branch). These branches invariably arose more distally than the branch to both the heads of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. CONCLUSIONS Based on these fundamental branching patterns, we suggest a novel branching categorization. The branches could be categorized into a posterior group and an anterior group, which has independent branches to the plantaris and popliteus muscles. This fundamental branching pattern and novel categorization contribute to the understanding of the ontogeny of the skeletal muscles around the flexor compartment of the leg.

Major change in morphology of the talofibular ligaments during fetal development and growth. SURGICAL AND RADIOLOGIC ANATOMY : SRA 2022; 44:1121-1129. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Ankle sprain is often attributed to damage of the anterior and posterior talofibular ligaments (ATFL, PTFL). We compared the morphology of these ligaments in fetuses of different gestational ages (GAs) with the horizontal configuration in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Histological sections of unilateral ankles were examined in 22 fetuses, 10 at GA of 9-12 weeks and 12 at GA of 26-39 weeks. RESULTS At a GA of 9 to 10 weeks, the ATFL and PTFL consisted of horizontally running straight fibers. The initial ATFL appeared as a thickening of the capsule of the talocrural joint, although the initial PTFL was distant from this joint. Until a GA of 12 weeks, the talus and fibula were separated by an expanding joint cavity. Thus, the initial horizontal ligaments were "pulled" in a distal direction. The distal parts of the ligaments consisted of thin collagenous fibers that had an irregular array, whereas the short proximal parts had thick fibers and a horizontal array. In near-term fetuses, the ligaments contained no horizontal fibers. The ATFL had a wavy course around the thick synovial fold, and was exposed to the joint cavity along the entire course; the distal part was thinner than the proximal part. The PTFL was bulky and consisted of fibers with an irregular array. Therefore, the morphology in a near-term fetus was quite different from that in adults. CONCLUSION The horizontal and straight composite ankle fibers in adults apparently result from postnatal reconstruction, depending on mechanical demand.

Abstract
The study of nuclei and antinuclei production has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. The first measurement of the production of _{Λ}^{3}H in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV is presented in this Letter. Its production yield measured in the rapidity interval -1<y<0 for the 40% highest-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is dN/dy=[6.3±1.8(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10^{-7}. The measurement is compared with the expectations of statistical hadronization and coalescence models, which describe the nucleosynthesis in hadronic collisions. These two models predict very different yields of the hypertriton in charged particle multiplicity environments relevant to small collision systems such as p-Pb, and therefore the measurement of dN/dy is crucial to distinguish between them. The precision of this measurement leads to the exclusion with a significance larger than 6.9σ of some configurations of the statistical hadronization model, thus constraining the theory behind the production of loosely bound states at hadron colliders.

Abstract
The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury after total hip arthroplasty causes patient dissatisfaction. This cadaveric study aimed to assess the risk for LFCN injury after the direct anterior approach (DAA) and anterolateral supine approach (ALS) with a focus on the anatomical variations of the LFCN. METHODS Thirty-seven hemipelves from 20 formalin-preserved cadavers (10 males and 10 females) were dissected to identify the LFCN, evaluate variations, and measure the distance from the LFCN to each approach. The LFCN was classified as classical, late, multi trunk, or primary femoral. RESULTS There were no significant variations in the LFCN between the sexes. The distance from the LFCN to DAA incision (10 [0-17.8] mm) was significantly less than that from the LFCN to ALS incision (27 [0-40] mm); moreover, 64.9% of DAA incisions crossed the LFCN. The classical type LFCN was closest to the DAA incision. The DAA incision most frequently crossed the LFCN at the proximal third, and the frequency of intersection of the LFCN and DAA incisions decreased by 25% by a 10-mm shortening of the DAA proximal incision. In contrast, 27% of ALS incisions crossed the LFCN. Multi trunk type LFCN was closest to the ALS incision. There were no significant differences between each approach and LFCN variations, and the frequency of intersection of the LFCN and ALS incisions decreased by 20% by a 10-mm shortening of the ALS proximal incision. CONCLUSIONS The intersection rates between the LFCN and the DAA and between the LFCN and the ALS were approximately 65 and 30%, respectively. Approximately 20-25% of these injuries may be avoidable by a 10-mm shortening of the proximal incision.

Measurement of the Groomed Jet Radius and Momentum Splitting Fraction in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:102001. Abstract
This article presents groomed jet substructure measurements in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. The soft drop grooming algorithm provides access to the hard parton splittings inside a jet by removing soft wide-angle radiation. We report the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction, z_{g}, and the (scaled) groomed jet radius, θ_{g}. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k_{T} algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4. In heavy-ion collisions, the large underlying event poses a challenge for the reconstruction of groomed jet observables, since fluctuations in the background can cause groomed parton splittings to be misidentified. By using strong grooming conditions to reduce this background, we report these observables fully corrected for detector effects and background fluctuations for the first time. A narrowing of the θ_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is seen, which provides direct evidence of the modification of the angular structure of jets in the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification of the z_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is observed. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, and provide constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms and coherence effects in the quark-gluon plasma.

Background
In patients with sludge or severe spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) in the left atrial appendage (LAA), isoproterenol loading transesophageal echocardiography (ISP-TEE) has been reported to check the presence of thrombus in the LAA, as the sludge or severe SEC disappears (Figure 1).
Purpose
The aim of this study was to assess the safety of ISP-TEE for the identification of LAA thrombus and the hemodynamic changes in the LAA caused by ISP loading.
Methods
We prospectively enrolled 25 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and sludge or SEC in the LAA who underwent ISP-TEE from April 2020 to July 2021. ISP was administered intravenously to achieve the target heart rate (HR) defined as follows: Max HR [beats per minutes: bpm] = 220 – age (years), Target HR [bpm] = Max HR × 0.8. Patients with tachycardia exceeding Max HR before ISP administration, hemodynamic instability, and other contraindications to ISP were excluded from the study. To assess the safety of ISP-TEE, we evaluated patients’ condition, changes in systolic blood pressure (sBP) and HR before and after ISP loading. We also assessed the presence or absence of worsening heart failure, new arrhythmias other than atrial fibrillation, and cerebral infarction or transient ischemic attack during the examination, and after 24 hours. Hemodynamic evaluation was performed using LAA blood flow velocity, LAA tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) velocity, and LAA volume fraction (LAAVF) defined as follows: LAAVF (%) = (Max LAA volume – Min LAA volume) / Max LAA volume × 100. Quantification of LAA volume was performed using the stacked-contour method of a 3-dimensional TEE full-volume acquisition.
Results
Among 25 patients, 13 patients had sludge or grade3 SEC, 7 patients had grade2 SEC, 5 patients had grade1 SEC. HR after ISP loading was significantly higher than before loading, but sBP did not change significantly before and after ISP loading. No complications due to ISP loading were observed during examination and after 24 hours. After ISP loading, there were 18 patients with grade 1 SEC or no SEC (classified as Group1), 7 patients had residual sludge or grade 2 to 3 SEC (classified as Group2). The differences in LAA blood flow velocity between before and after ISP loading was faster in Group1 than in Group2: 13.0 ± 10.5 vs 2.6 ± 4.2. p = 0.019. The differences in TDI velocity was also faster in Group1 than in Group2: 1.46 ± 1.14 vs 0.19 ± 0.50, p = 0.010. Measurement of Prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:012001. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Σ_{c}^{0,++} production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}/D^{0} and Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} are calculated in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) intervals 2<p_{T}<12 and 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Σ_{c}. The feed-down contribution to Λ_{c}^{+} production from Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} is also reported and is found to be larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Measurement of the Cross Sections of Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} Baryons and of the Branching-Fraction Ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}) in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ_{c}^{0} baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay (Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}) and the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}) channels. The Ξ_{c}^{+} baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}) channel. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})=1.38±0.14(stat)±0.22(syst) was measured with a total uncertainty reduced by a factor of about 3 with respect to the current world average reported by the Particle Data Group. The transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence of the Ξ_{c}^{0}- and Ξ_{c}^{+}-baryon production relative to the D^{0} meson and to the Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}- and Λ_{c}^{+}-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases toward low p_{T} up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronization mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronization in electron-positron (e^{+}e^{-}) and hadronic collisions.

Association between the developing sphenoid and adult morphology: A study using sagittal sections of the skull base from human embryos and fetuses. J Anat 2021; 239:1300-1317. Abstract
The developing sphenoid is regarded as a median cartilage mass (basisphenoid [BS]) with three cartilaginous processes (orbitosphenoid [OS], ala temporalis [AT], and alar process [AP]). The relationships of this initial configuration with the adult morphology are difficult to determine because of extensive membranous ossification along the cartilaginous elements. The purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the anatomical connections between each element of the fetal sphenoid and adult morphology. Sagittal sections from 25 embryos and fetuses of gestational age 6-34 weeks and crown-rump length 12-295 mm were therefore examined and compared with horizontal and frontal sections from the other 25 late-term fetuses (217-340 mm). The OS was identified as a set of three mutually attached cartilage bars in early fetuses. At all stages, the OS-post was continuous with the anterolateral part of the BS. The BS included the notochord and Rathke's pouch remnant in embryos and early fetuses. The dorsum sellae was absent from embryos, but it protruded from the BS in early fetuses before a fossa for the hypophysis became evident. Although not higher than the hypophysis at midterm, the dorsum sellae elongated superiorly after gestational age 25 weeks. In early fetuses, the AP was located on the side immediately anterior to the otic capsule. The AT developed on the side immediately posterior to the extraocular rectus muscles. At late term, the greater wing was formed by membranous bones from the AT and AP. The AT and AP formed a complex bridge between the BS and the greater wing. A small cartilage, future medial pterygoid process (PTmed) was located inferior to the AT in early fetuses. At midterm, one endochondral bone and multiple membranous bones formed the PTmed. The lateral pterygoid process (PTlat) was formed by a single membranous bone plate. Therefore, we connected fetal elements and the adult morphology as follows. (1) Derivative of the OS makes not only the lesser wing but also the anterior margin of the body of the sphenoid. (2) Derivatives of the BS are the body of the sphenoid including the sella turcica and the dorsum sellae. (3) Most of the greater wing including the foramen rotundum and the foramen oval originate from the AT and AP and multiple membranous bones. (4) The PTmed originate from endochondral bones and multiple membranous bones, while the PTlat derive from a single membranous bone.

Λ_{c}^{+} Production and Baryon-to-Meson Ratios in pp and p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:202301. Abstract
The prompt production of the charm baryon Λ_{c}^{+} and the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} production ratios were measured at midrapidity with the ALICE detector in pp and p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. These new measurements show a clear decrease of the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} ratio with increasing transverse momentum (p_{T}) in both collision systems in the range 2<p_{T}<12 GeV/c, exhibiting similarities with the light-flavor baryon-to-meson ratios p/π and Λ/K_{S}^{0}. At low p_{T}, predictions that include additional color-reconnection mechanisms beyond the leading-color approximation, assume the existence of additional higher-mass charm-baryon states, or include hadronization via coalescence can describe the data, while predictions driven by charm-quark fragmentation processes measured in e^{+}e^{-} and e^{-}p collisions significantly underestimate the data. The results presented in this Letter provide significant evidence that the established assumption of universality (colliding-system independence) of parton-to-hadron fragmentation is not sufficient to describe charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Experimental Evidence for an Attractive p-ϕ Interaction. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:172301. Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental evidence of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a ϕ meson. The result is obtained from two-particle correlations of combined p-ϕ⊕ p[over ¯]-ϕ pairs measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The spin-averaged scattering length and effective range of the p-ϕ interaction are extracted from the fully corrected correlation function employing the Lednický-Lyuboshits approach. In particular, the imaginary part of the scattering length vanishes within uncertainties, indicating that inelastic processes do not play a prominent role for the p-ϕ interaction. These data demonstrate that the interaction is dominated by elastic p-ϕ scattering. Furthermore, an analysis employing phenomenological Gaussian- and Yukawa-type potentials is conducted. Under the assumption of the latter, the N-ϕ coupling constant is found to be g_{N-ϕ}=0.14±0.03(stat)±0.02(syst). This work provides valuable experimental input to accomplish a self-consistent description of the N-ϕ interaction, which is particularly relevant for the more fundamental studies on partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.

Multiharmonic Correlations of Different Flow Amplitudes in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:092302. Abstract
The event-by-event correlations between three flow amplitudes are measured for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, using higher-order symmetric cumulants. We find that different three-harmonic correlations develop during the collective evolution of the medium when compared to correlations that exist in the initial state. These new results cannot be interpreted in terms of previous lower-order flow measurements since contributions from two-harmonic correlations are explicitly removed in the new observables. A comparison to Monte Carlo simulations provides new and independent constraints for the initial conditions and system properties of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions.

Plasmonic mode coupling and thin film sensing in metal-insulator-metal structures. Sci Rep 2021; 11:15093. Abstract
Optical sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration in layered media have attracted considerable attention over the past decades owing to their ability of label free sensing in biomolecular interaction analysis, and highly sensitive detection of changes in refractive index and thickness, i.e. the optical thickness, of thin film adsorbates (thin film sensing). Furthermore, SPR is highly sensitive to the refractive index of the medium adjacent to the bare metal, and it allows for bulk sensing as well. When deposited at the metal/air interface, an adsorbed layer disturbs the highly localized, i.e. bound, wave at this interface and changes the plasmon resonance to allow for sensing in angular or wavelength interrogation and intensity measurement modes. A high degree of sensitivity is required for precise and efficient sensing, especially for biomolecular interaction analysis for early stage diagnostics; and besides conventional SPR (CSPR), several other configurations have been developed in recent years targeting sensitivity, including long-range SPR (LRSPR) and waveguide-coupled SPR (WGSPR) observed in MIM structures, referred here to by MIM modes, resulting from the coupling of SPRs at I/M interfaces, and Fano-type resonances occurring from broad and sharp modes coupling in layered structures. In our previous research, we demonstrated that MIM is better than CSPR for bulk sensing, and in this paper, we show that CSPR is better than MIM for thin film sensing for thicknesses of the sensing layer (SL) larger than 10 nm. We discuss and compare the sensitivity of CSPR and MIM for thin film sensing by using both experiments and theoretical calculations based on rigorous electromagnetic (EM) theory. We discuss in detail MIM modes coupling and anti-crossing, and we show that when a thin film adsorbate, i.e. a SL), is deposited on top of the outermost-layer of an optimized MIM structure, it modifies the characteristics of the coupled modes of the structure, and it reduces the electric field, both inside the SL and at the SL/air interface, and as a result, it decreases the sensitivity of the MIM versus the CSPR sensor. Our work is of critical importance to plasmonic mode coupling using MIM configurations, as well as to optical bio- and chemical-sensing.

Soft-Dielectron Excess in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:042302. Abstract
A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron (ee) invariant mass m_{ee} and pair transverse momentum p_{T,ee} that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of m_{ee}, p_{T,ee}, and event multiplicity dN_{ch}/dη. The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured η/π^{0} ratio in pp and proton-nucleus collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at 0.15<m_{ee}<0.6 GeV/c^{2} and for p_{T,ee}<0.4 GeV/c indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the "anomalous" soft-photon and soft-dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to 1.61±0.13(stat)±0.17(syst,data)±0.34(syst,cocktail) in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in m_{ee} and p_{T,ee} are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.

Abstract
PURPOSE The longissimus (LO) and iliocostalis (IC) of adults consist of myofibers extending from the superolateral to the inferomedial side of the back and, because of the same course, they are fused in the thoracolumbar region. The LO also has a medial attachment to the long myofibers of the transversospinalis (TS) showing a course from the superomedial to the inferolateral side. However, there is apparently no information regarding when and how these similar longitudinal muscles differentiate from a cluster of dorsomedial myotome cells. METHODS We examined sagittal and horizontal sections of the trunks of 39 human embryos and fetuses (18-330 mm crown-rump length). RESULTS At 6-7 weeks gestational age (GA), the surface aponeurosis appeared prior to and independent of the thoracolumbar fascia. At 6-9 weeks GA, the LO myofibers had a postero-inferior course, from the transverse process to the initial aponeurosis, whereas the TS myofibers had a postero-superior course, from a lateral extension of the intertransverse ligament to the aponeurosis. However, the IC consisted of supracostal longitudinal myofibers and was distant from the LO until 12 weeks GA. Because of the lack of ligamentous attachments and ribs, myofibers of the TS, LO, and IC took a similar inferior course in the lumbar region. When the early TS was represented by the transverso-aponeurotic muscle, consequently, the LO corresponded to the aponeuro-transversal muscle and was independent from the IC. CONCLUSION The classical model of TS and LO development does not recognize the essential role of the aponeurosis identified here.

Antimony from brake dust to the combined sewer collection system via road effluent under rainy conditions. ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT 2021; 193:369. Abstract
Abrasion of the brake lining of automobiles is one of the main antimony (Sb) sources on the road. Therefore, the road effluent possibly supplies Sb to the combined sewer collection system. However, Sb in road-sewer systems has attracted little concern, although heavy metals such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in sewer water have been studied by many previous authors. We investigated the effect of road effluent on Sb in the combined sewer water by collecting road effluent, road dust, and sewer water under rainy and dry weather conditions. Sb in road effluent showed a significantly higher concentration than the other types of samples, and the Sb concentration in sewer during wet weather was significantly higher than that during dry weather. Furthermore, the Sb concentration in sewer water decreased with time during a wash-off event. Clear positive relationships between Sb and Cu and between Sb and Ba in both road effluent and road dust extract indicate the effect of brake abrasion because the brake lining contains Cu, Sb, and Ba in high concentrations. Approximately 42% of Sb load occurred during the wash-off event, while the loads of Cu and Ba were much less. Unlike Cu and Ba, we conclude that Sb in combined sewer water largely depends on road effluent in wet weather due to the wash-off of road dust, which is probably associated with brake lining abrasion.

Abstract
Purpose Many reports have described anomalous connections of the superior rectus (SR) with other extraocular rectus muscles, in which additional heads of the other three rectus muscles likely provided the connections. We examined how these connections are established during fetal development. Methods We analyzed paraffin-embedded horizontal sections from 25 late-stage fetuses. Horizontal sections are best suited for understanding the mediolateral relationships of muscle origins. Results We confirmed a common tendinous origin of the lateral rectus (LR), inferior rectus (IR) and medial rectus (MR) muscles that was separated from the SR origin. Notably, eight fetuses (32%) had tendinous or muscular connections between the SR and other rectus muscles that had one of four morphologies: (a) a thin tendon from the SR to the common tendon of the three rectus muscles (2 fetuses), (b) a thin tendon to the LR (one fetus), (c) a thin tendon to the inferior rectus muscle origin (two fetuses), and (d) SR muscle fibers arising from an additional head of the LR (three fetuses). Conclusions The SR seemed to issue a thin tendon that passed along the inferior or lateral side of the oculomotor nerve. Conversely, the LR and inferior rectus muscle were likely to carry a supernumerary bundle that reached the SR. The accessory head of the medial rectus muscle showed a stable morphology in that it seemed to also provide an anomalous double head. However, the presence of an accessory head in the LR was rare. In contrast with our previously published diagram of the orbital apex, the accessory head of the medial rectus muscle passed along the lateral side of the superior oblique.

Elliptic Flow of Electrons from Beauty-Hadron Decays in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 126:162001. Abstract
The elliptic flow of electrons from beauty hadron decays at midrapidity (|y|<0.8) is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The azimuthal distribution of the particles produced in the collisions can be parametrized with a Fourier expansion, in which the second harmonic coefficient represents the elliptic flow, v_{2}. The v_{2} coefficient of electrons from beauty hadron decays is measured for the first time in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) range 1.3-6 GeV/c in the centrality class 30%-50%. The measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays exploits their larger mean proper decay length cτ≈500 μm compared to that of charm hadrons and most of the other background sources. The v_{2} of electrons from beauty hadron decays at midrapidity is found to be positive with a significance of 3.75 σ. The results provide insights into the degree of thermalization of beauty quarks in the medium. A model assuming full thermalization of beauty quarks is strongly disfavored by the measurement at high p_{T}, but is in agreement with the results at low p_{T}. Transport models including substantial interactions of beauty quarks with an expanding strongly interacting medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.
