Abstract
Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.

Abstract
Quantum oscillations in magnetic torque and electrical resistivity were measured to investigate the electronic structure of β-ReO2, a candidate hourglass nodal chain metal (Dirac loop chain metal). All the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation branches measured at 30 mK in magnetic fields of up to 17.5 T were consistent with first-principles calculations predicting four Fermi surfaces (FSs). The small-electron FS of the four FSs exhibited a very small cyclotron mass, 0.059 times that of the free electrons, which is likely to be related to the linear dispersion of the energy band. The consistency between the quantum oscillation results and band calculations indicates the presence of the hourglass nodal chain predicted for β-ReO2 in the vicinity of the Fermi energy.

Abstract
We discovered new B-site-ordered double perovskites Ln2LiFeO6 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, and Eu) with most likely unusually high valence Fe5+, which was stabilized by strong oxidizing high-pressure synthesis. Despite large antiferromagnetic interactions between Fe5+ spins in these compounds, the magnetic ordering is strongly suppressed due to the geometrical frustration of Fe5+ located in a face-centered cubic lattice. In addition, canted magnetic structures are stabilized only in those with Ln = Sm and Eu, which is most likely due to significant Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction caused by large monoclinic structural distortion. These results provide a deep understanding of the structure-property relationships in geometrically frustrated B-site-ordered double perovskites.

Abstract
Topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) offer an excellent opportunity to realize outstanding physical properties distinct from those of topological insulators. Since TDSs verified so far have their own problems such as high reactivity in the atmosphere and difficulty in controlling topological phases via chemical substitution, it is highly desirable to find a new material platform of TDSs. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles band-structure calculations, we show that ternary compound BaMg2Bi2 is a TDS with a simple Dirac-band crossing around the Brillouin-zone center protected by the C3 symmetry of crystal. We also found that isostructural SrMg2Bi2 is an ordinary insulator characterized by the absence of band inversion due to the reduction of spin–orbit coupling. Thus, XMg2Bi2 (X = Sr, Ba, etc.) serves as a useful platform to study the interplay among crystal symmetry, spin–orbit coupling, and topological phase transition around the TDS phase.

Abstract
Band-gap engineering is one of the fundamental techniques in semiconductor technology and also applicable in next generation spintronics using the spin degree of freedom. To fully utilize the spintronic materials, it is essential to optimize the spin-dependent electronic structures in the operando conditions by applying magnetic and/or electric fields. Here we present an advanced spectroscopic technique to probe the spin-polarized electronic structures by using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering (RIXS) under an external magnetic field. Thanks to the spin-selective dipole-allowed transitions in RIXS-MCD, we have successfully demonstrated the direct evidence of the perfectly spin-polarized electronic structures for the prototypical halfmetallic Heusller alloy \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}

Abstract
Using the density functional theory, we investigated the geometric, electronic structure, phase stability and electrochemical properties of a potential P2 layer orthorhombic cathode material NaxMnO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) applied for sodium-ion batteries. Herein, we shed the light on the undeniable effect of the polaron formation and polaron migration on the diffusion of Na+ ions in the orthorhombic P2 layered oxides. Both GGA+U and HSE06 methods agree that, when a Na+ ion is removed from the fully charged state of NaMnO2, the accompanying polaron preferably forms at one of the third nearest Mn (3NN) octahedra to the Na vacancy, implying the oxidization of the Mn3+ ion at one of these 3NN sites to Mn4+. The positive polaron migrates simultaneously with the Na vacancy and would hinder the diffusion of Na ions. Two kinds of elementary diffusion processes, named parallel and crossing, have been explored which required almost same activation energy of about 423 meV (518 meV) by GGA+U (HSE06). In the fully discharged state, GGA+U and HSE06 methods indicate that the negative polaron forms at one of the second nearest Mn neighbours (2NN). The activation energy of 273 meV (327 meV) is needed for diffusion in a structure with a low Na concentration, which is much lower than that required for diffusion in the Na-rich regime. Consequently, Na+ ions can diffuse easier at lower Na concentrations. With the overall activation energy of 423 meV (518 meV), this material exhibits a faster ion diffusion in comparison with the prevailing lithium-based materials such as olivine phosphate.

Abstract
Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin film grown on TlBiSe2, we discover that the Dirac-cone state of substrate TlBiSe2 migrates to the top surface of Pb film and obtains an energy gap below the superconducting transition temperature of Pb. This suggests that a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor is converted into a TSC by the topological proximity effect. Our discovery opens a route to manipulate topological superconducting properties of materials. Realizing topological superconductivity is essential for applicable fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, Trang et al. report migration of Dirac-cone from TlBiSe2 substrate to top surface of superconducting Pb film due to topological proximity effect, suggesting realization of topological superconductivity.

Abstract
A sparse model for quantifying energy difference between zinc-blende and rock-salt crystal structures in octet elemental and binary materials is constructed by using the linearly independent descriptor-generation method and exhaustive search, following the previous work by Ghiringhelli et al. [Phys Rev Lett. 2015;114:105503]. The obtained simplest model includes only atomic radius information of constituent atoms and its physical meaning is interpreted in relation to van Arkel-Ketelaar's triangle for classifying chemical bonding in binary compounds.

Abstract
Diamond has two crystallographically inequivalent sites in the unit cell. In doped diamond, dopant occupation in the two sites is expected to be equal. Nevertheless, preferential dopant occupation during growth under nonequilibrium conditions is of fundamental importance, for example, to enhance the properties of nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers; therefore, this is a promising candidate for a qubit. However, the lack of suitable experimental techniques has made it difficult to study the crystal- and chemical-site-resolved local structures of dopants. Here, we confirm the identity of two chemical sites with asymmetric dopant incorporation in the diamond structure, via the photoelectron holography (PEH) of heavily phosphorus (P)-doped diamond prepared by chemical vapor deposition. One is substitutionally incorporated P with preferential site occupations and the other can be attributed to a PV split vacancy complex with preferential orientation. The present study shows that PEH is a valuable technique to study the local structures around dopants with a resolution of crystallographically inequivalent but energetically equivalent sites/orientations. Such information provides strategies to improve the properties of dopant related-complexes in which alignment is crucial for sensing of magnetic field or quantum spin register using N-V centers in diamond.

Abstract
This study investigated displacement of the tracheal tube caused by different methods of intubating stylet removal, using in-vitro experiments and mathematical analysis. In the first in-vitro experiment, we measured the distance travelled by the tube tip during stylet extraction. Then, we investigated the ideal technique for stylet extraction using mathematical analysis, which would cause minimal tube displacement. Then, using a training manikin, we measured the force applied to the vocal cords and stylet extraction force during tracheal intubation. When the stylet was extracted along a straight path towards the stylet end, the distance travelled by the tube tip significantly increased as the bending angle increased. Mathematical analysis revealed that the stylet should be diagonally extracted (in the sagittal plane) at an appropriate angle, rather than along a straight path towards the direction of the stylet end. In simulated tracheal intubation, extraction force and force applied to the vocal cords both significantly increased as the bending angle increased. Compared with the 'hockey stick'-shaped stylet, the arcuate-shaped stylet resulted in reduced force. Our results indicate the potential risk for vocal cord injury when using hockey stick-shaped stylets with large bending angles.

Abstract
We study the Na-ion battery characteristics of SnS as a negative electrode by first-principles calculations. From energy analyses, we clarify the discharge reaction process of the Na/SnS half-cell system. We show a phase diagram of Na-Sn-S ternary systems by constructing convex-hull curves, and show a possible reaction route considering intermediate products in discharge reactions. Voltage-capacity curves are calculated based on the Na-SnS reaction path that is obtained from the ternary phase diagram. It is found that the conversion reactions and subsequently the alloying reactions proceed in the SnS electrode, contributing to its high capacity compared with the metallic Sn electrode, in which only the alloying reactions progresses stepwise. To verify the calculated reaction process, x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) are calculated and compared with experimental XAS at S K-edge, showing meaningful XAS changes associated with Na2 S and SnS in discharged and charged states, respectively.

Abstract
One of the key challenges in condensed-matter physics is to establish a topological superconductor that hosts exotic Majorana fermions. Although various heterostructures consisting of conventional BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superconductors as well as doped topological insulators were intensively investigated, no conclusive evidence for Majorana fermions has been provided. This is mainly because of their very low superconducting transition temperatures ( Tc) and small superconducting-gap magnitude. Here, we report a possible realization of topological superconductivity at very high temperatures in a hybrid of Bi(110) ultrathin film and copper oxide superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we found that three-bilayer-thick Bi(110) on Bi2212 exhibits a proximity-effect-induced s-wave energy gap as large as 7.5 meV which persists up to Tc of Bi2212 (85 K). The small Fermi energy and strong spin-orbit coupling of Bi(110), together with the large pairing gap and high Tc, make this system a prime candidate for exploring stable Majorana fermions at very high temperatures.

Abstract
We have fabricated bismuth (Bi) ultrathin films on a charge-density-wave (CDW) compound 1T-TaS2 and elucidated electronic states by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles band-structure calculations. We found that the Bi film on 1T-TaS2 undergoes a structural transition from (111) to (110) upon reducing the film thickness, accompanied by a drastic change in the energy band structure. We also revealed that while two-bilayer-thick Bi(110) film on Si(111) is characterized by a dispersive band touching the Fermi level ( EF), the energy band of the same film on 1T-TaS2 exhibits holelike dispersion with a finite energy gap at EF. We discuss the origin of such intriguing differences in terms of the CDW proximity effect.

Abstract
Mixed-anion perovskites such as oxynitrides, oxyfluorides, and oxyhydrides have flexibility in their anion arrangements, which potentially enables functional material design based on coordination chemistry. However, difficulty in the control of the anion arrangement has prevented the realization of this concept. In this study, we demonstrate strain engineering of the anion arrangement in epitaxial thin films of the Ca1-xSrxTaO2N perovskite oxynitrides. Under compressive epitaxial strain, the axial sites in TaO4N2 octahedra tend to be occupied by nitrogen rather than oxygen, which was revealed by N and O K-edge linearly polarized X-ray absorption near-edge structure (LP-XANES) and scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy. Furthermore, detailed analysis of the LP-XANES indicated that the high occupancy of nitrogen at the axial sites is due to the partial formation of a metastable trans-type anion configuration. These results are expected to serve as a guide for the material design of mixed-anion compounds based on their anion arrangements.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to review the clinical results of carpal ligaments injuries with scaphoid nonunion. We hypothesized that scaphoid nonunion with carpal ligament injury is associated with clinical result. We retrospectively reviewed 60 cases of -Herbert screw fixation with bone graft for scaphoid nonunions. Scapholunate (SL) and lunotriquetral (LT) ligaments lesions were confirmed by arthroscopy. Approximately half of the nonunion scaphoid cases had carpal ligaments injuries. At final follow-up evaluation, wrist function as evaluated by the Mayo wrist score was excellent in 34 patients, good in 16 patients, fair in 8 patients, and poor in 2 patients. Cases with both SL/LT ligaments injuries tended to have decreased wrist flexion-extension motion. Our results suggest that there is an indication for arthroscopy in scaphoid nonunion if surgical fixation is offered to avoid detrimental effects of an undiagnosed ligament tear.

Abstract
Aims Chronic conditions of the wrist may be difficult to manage because pain and psychiatric conditions are correlated with abnormal function of the hand. Additionally, intra-articular inflammatory cytokines may cause pain. We aimed to validate the measurement of inflammatory cytokines in these conditions and identify features associated with symptoms. Patients and Methods The study included 38 patients (18 men, 20 women, mean age 43 years) with a chronic condition of the wrist who underwent arthroscopy. Before surgery, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Hand20 questionnaire and a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain were used. Cytokine and chemokine levels in the synovial fluid of the wrist were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and correlations between the levels with pain were analysed. Gene expression profiles of the synovial membranes were assessed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results Older patients had high pre-operative Hand20 scores. One-year post-operative Hand20 and VAS scores and pre-operative VAS scores correlated with SDS scores. Post-operative VAS scores negatively correlated with the expression of nerve growth factor and SDS scores positively correlated with the expression of tumour necrosis factor-alpha and negatively correlated with the expression of tumour necrosis factor-converting enzyme. Conclusion There was a positive correlation between depression and chronic conditions of the wrist. Levels of some cytokines correlate with pain and depression. Abstract
The coupling of spin and valley physics is nowadays regarded as a promising route toward next-generation spintronic and valleytronic devices. In the aim of engineering functional properties for valleytronic applications, we focus on the ferroelectric heterostructure BiAlO3/BiIrO3, where the complex interplay among a trigonal crystal field, layer degrees of freedom, and spin-orbit coupling mediates a strong spin-valley coupling. Furthermore, we show that ferroelectricity provides a nonvolatile handle to manipulate and switch the emerging valley-contrasting spin polarization.

Abstract
To realize a one-dimensional (1D) system with strong spin-orbit coupling is a big challenge in modern physics, since the electrons in such a system are predicted to exhibit exotic properties unexpected from the 2D or 3D counterparts, while it was difficult to realize genuine physical properties inherent to the 1D system. We demonstrate the first experimental result that directly determines the purely 1D band structure by performing spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Bi islands on a silicon surface that contains a metallic 1D edge structure with unexpectedly large Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling suggestive of the nontopological nature. We have also found a sizable out-of-plane spin polarization of the 1D edge state, consistent with our first-principles band calculations. Our result provides a new platform to realize exotic quantum phenomena at the 1D edge of the strong spin-orbit-coupling systems.

Abstract
We have observed zero resistivity above 10 K and an onset of resistivity reduction at 25.2 K in a heavily B-doped diamond film. However, the effective carrier concentration is similar to that of superconducting diamond with a lower Tc. We found that the carrier has a longer mean free path and lifetime than in the previous report, indicating that this highest Tc diamond has better crystallinity compared to that of other superconducting diamond films. In addition, the susceptibility shows a small transition above 20 K in the high quality diamond, suggesting a signature of superconductivity above 20 K. These results strongly suggest that heavier carrier doped defect-free crystalline diamond could give rise to high Tc diamond.

Abstract
Neural cross-sensitization has been postulated as a mechanism underlying overlaps of chronic pelvic pain disorders such as bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Animals with experimental colitis have been used to study the underlying mechanisms for overlapped pelvic pain symptoms, and shown to exhibit bladder overactivity evidenced by frequent voiding; however, it has not directly been evaluated whether pain sensation derived from the lower urinary tract is enhanced in colitis models. Also, the cross-sensitization between the colon and urethra has not been studied previously. In the present study, we therefore investigated pain behaviors induced by nociceptive stimuli in the lower urinary tract and the involvement of C-fiber afferent pathways using rats with colitis induced by intracolonic application of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). In TNBS-induced colitis rats at 10 days, intravesical application of resiniferatoxin (RTx) induced a significantly greater number of episodes of both licking and freezing behaviors, which were reduced by capsaicin-sensitive C-fiber afferent desensitization. Histochemical studies using fluorescent dye tracers injected into the colon, bladder or urethra showed that dichotomized afferent neurons comprised 6.9-14.5% of L1, L6 and S1 dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons innervating the colon or the lower urinary tract. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) mRNA expression was significantly increased in, the bladder, urethra and S1 DRG in colitis rats. An increase in myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was found in the colon, but not in the bladder or urethra after intracolonic TNBS treatment. These results indicate that TNBS-induced colitis increased pain sensitivity in the bladder and urethra via activation of C-fiber afferent pathways due to colon-to-bladder and colon-to-urethral cross-sensitization, suggesting the contribution of pelvic organ cross-sensitization mechanisms to overlapped pain symptoms in BPS/IC and IBS.

Abstract
We report the electronic and transport properties of the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO(2) at high magnetic fields up to 33 T, using measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the Hall resistivity. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillations below the magnetic ordering temperature T(N) reveal several two-dimensional Fermi surfaces of smaller size than those found in nonmagnetic PdCoO(2), consistent with the band structure calculations. This evidences Fermi surface reconstruction due to the 120° helical ordering of the localized Cr spins, suggesting significant coupling of the itinerant electrons to the underlying spin texture. This induces the nonlinear Hall resistivity at low temperatures via the magnetic breakdown in the reconstructed Fermi surface. Furthermore, such a coupling leads to the unconventional anomalous Hall effects near T(N) due to the field-induced spin chirality at high magnetic fields.

Abstract
Using first principles density functional theory, we predict new multiferroic compounds Ho1/2A1/2MnO3 (A = As, Sb, Bi) with enhanced polarization. We find that doping of lone pair cations with different ionic radii, at the A-site of orthorhombic HoMnO3, results in a marked increase of the electronic polarization and its development along the b-axis. This development of electronic polarization along the b-axis is attributed to the breaking of the two-fold rotational symmetry which leads to the emergence of a polar b-axis. Furthermore, this symmetry breaking leads to the emergence of two inequivalent Mn ions (Mn(0) and Mn(1)) and the variance in their octahedral (Mn(0)O6 and Mn(1)O6) distortions. We rationalize the observed trends in the total polarization in terms of disparate eg electron hopping along the two different Mn(0) and Mn(1) chains. We expect large ionic polarization in the doped compounds due to the presence of 4s(2) As, 5s(2) Sb and 6s(2) Bi lone pairs, but surprisingly the effect of the lone pairs seems to be inactive. This is attributed to the strong GdFeO3 distortions exhibited by the MnO6 octahedron which hinders polar displacement of the lone pair cations.

Abstract
Extremely large magnetoresistance is realized in the nonmagnetic layered metal PdCoO(2). In spite of a highly conducting metallic behavior with a simple quasi-two-dimensional hexagonal Fermi surface, the interlayer resistance reaches up to 35,000% for the field along the [11[over ¯]0] direction. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the resistance becomes nonmetallic for this field direction, while it remains metallic for fields along the [110] direction. Such severe and anisotropic destruction of the interlayer coherence by a magnetic field on a simple Fermi surface is ascribable to orbital motion of carriers on the Fermi surface driven by the Lorentz force, but seems to have been largely overlooked until now.

Abstract
The magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MA) of Fe-based transition-metal thin films, consisting of only magnetic 3d elements, was systematically investigated from full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave calculations. The results predict that giant MA with a perpendicular magnetic easy axis (PMA) can be achieved by tuning the atomic-layer alignments in an Fe-Ni thin film. This giant PMA arises from the spin-orbit coupling interaction between occupied and unoccupied Ni dx2-y2,xy bands crossing the Fermi level. A promising 3d transition-metal thin film for the MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions with the giant PMA was, thus, demonstrated.

Abstract
We performed a spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of bismuth ultrathin film on Si(111) with various film thickness d. We found that the spin polarization of spin-split Rashba surface states near the Brillouin-zone boundary, which is high (0.7) at d = 40 BL (bilayers), is gradually reduced on decreasing d and almost vanishes at d = 8 BL. This finding provides a novel method to generate spin-polarized electrons with tunable spin-polarization.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of replication-defective herpes simplex virus (HSV) vector expression of interleukin-4 (IL-4) on bladder overactivity and nociception. HSV vector expressing murine interleukin-4 (S4IL4) or the control vector expressing β-galactosidase (SHZ) were injected to the rat bladder wall. At 1 week after viral injection, in cystometry performed under urethane anesthesia, the S4IL4-treated group did not show the intercontraction intervals reduction during intravesical administration of 10 nM resiniferatoxin (RTx). At 2 weeks after viral injection, behavioral studies were performed on vector-injected animals in an awakened state. Freezing behavior induced by 3 μM RTx, administered for 1 min into the bladder, was significantly suppressed in the S4IL4 group compared with the SHZ group. Murine IL-4 levels examined by ELISA were significantly increased in bladder and bladder afferent dorsal root ganglia at 2 weeks after viral injection. The expression of IL-1β and IL-2 and bladder inflammatory responses were significantly suppressed in the RTx-irritated bladder of S4IL4-injected rats. These results indicate that HSV vector-mediated interleukin-4 expression in the bladder and bladder afferent pathways reduces the inflammatory response, bladder overactivity and nociceptive behavior induced by bladder irritation in the rat model. Therefore, IL-4 gene therapy could be a new strategy for treating urinary frequency and/or bladder pain.

ABSTRACTAdvances in all-electron local density functional theory approaches to complex materials structure and properties made possible by the implementation of new computational/theoretical algorithms on supercomputers are exemplified in our full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. In this total energy self-consistent approach, high numerical stability and precision (to 10 in the total energy) have been demonstrated in a study of the relaxation and reconstruction of transition metal surfaces. Here we demonstrate the predictive power of this method for describing the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of several systems (surfaces, overlayers, sandwiches, and superlattices).

Abstract
Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is employed to investigate the temperature (T) dependence of the electronic structure in BaFe2As2 across the magnetostructural transition at T{N} approximately 140 K. A drastic transformation in Fermi surface (FS) shape across T{N} is observed, as expected by first-principles band calculations. Polarization-dependent ARPES and band calculations consistently indicate that the observed FSs at k{z} approximately pi in the low-T antiferromagnetic state are dominated by the Fe3d{zx} orbital, leading to the twofold electronic structure. These results indicate that magnetostructural transition in BaFe2As2 accompanies orbital-dependent modifications in the electronic structure.

Abstract
Hydrotalcite (HTAL-Cl), an inorganic anion exchanger, is of use as an adsorbent for the removal of arsenate (As(V)) in water systems. The adsorption properties of HTAL-Cl for As(V) and the effects of co-existing anions on the As(V) removal performance were investigated in this work. Under the conditions of pH>or=4, the adsorption capacity for As(V) gradually decreased with an increase of pH, but As(V) was removed effectively within the range of pH = 5-8. Co-existing anions interfered As(V) removal, and the effect decreased in the order of HPO(4)(2-) > HCO(3)(-) > SO(4)(2-) > Cl(-). In binary solute systems containing phosphate and As(V), the maximum adsorption capacity of HTAL-Cl was 0.95 mmol g(-1) for phosphate and 0.65 mmol g(-1) for As(V): the total of these values corresponded to the maximum adsorption capacity for As(V) in single solute systems. The adsorption isotherms in these binary solute systems were approximated by the following modified Langmuir equations:As(V): q(As) = 18.7 radicalC(As)/(1 + 21.5 radicalC(P) + 12.8 radicalC(As)), phosphate : q(P) = 33.1 radicalC(P)/(1 + 21.5 radicalC(P) + 12.8 radicalC(As)). The column adsorption experiments showed that the adsorbed As(V) was released by the phosphate adsorption, because phosphate was adsorbed more strongly on HTAL-CL than As(V).

Abstract
A peculiar Rashba effect is found at a point in the Brillouin zone, where the time-reversal symmetry is broken, though this symmetry was believed to be a necessary condition for Rashba splitting. This finding obtained experimentally by photoemission measurements on a Bi/Si(111)-(sqrt(3) x sqrt(3)) surface is fully confirmed by a first-principles theoretical calculation. We found that the peculiar Rashba effect is simply understood by the two-dimensional symmetry of the surface, and that this effect leads to an unconventional nonvortical Rashba spin structure at a point with time-reversal invariance.

Abstract
We study the electronic structure and vibrational modes of several amides M(NH(2))(n) and alanates M(AlH(4))(n) (M = K, Na, Li, Ca and Mg), focusing on the role of cation states. Calculated breathing stretching vibration modes for these compounds are compared with measured infrared and Raman spectra. In the amides, we find a significant tendency such that the breathing mode frequencies and the structural parameters of NH(2) vary in accordance with the ionization energy of cation. The tendency may be explained by the strength in hybridization between cation orbitals and molecular orbitals of (NH(2))(-). The microscopic mechanism of correlations between the vibration frequencies and structural parameters is elucidated in relation to the electronic structure. A possible similar tendency in the alanates is also discussed.

Abstract
For surface systems, the Rashba effect is studied by using a k·p perturbation method. It is shown that the velocity-operator term in the perturbation gives the generalized Rashba Hamiltonian, of which a group-theoretical analysis is given to explain variations in the spin splitting and spin structure expected for typical surface symmetry. The matrix elements of the velocity and spin-angular-momentum operators play a key role in determining the characteristic features of the surface Rashba effect. Whether a surface system shows isotropic spin splitting and vortical spin structure as given by the original Rashba Hamiltonian or not depends on the group of k appearing in the corresponding two-dimensional Brillouin zone. It is especially emphasized that the ideal Rashba effect may be realized even for a wavevector k without time reversal, which is usually believed to be a necessary condition.

Abstract
The Rashba effect in several surface systems, Au(111), Au(110), Ag(111), Sb(111) and Si(111)-Bi, is studied by means of first-principles relativistic density-functional calculations. The importance of the asymmetric behavior around the surface atom is emphasized as a crucial factor to determine the magnitude of Rashba spin splitting in addition to the size of the spin-orbit coupling. The Rashba effect at the Brillouin-zone boundary is generally described with time-reversal symmetry. Distinctive features in the spin splitting and spin direction for a two-dimensional hexagonal system are discussed with the use of symmetry in the double group of k.

Abstract
The electronic structure of boron-hydrogen complex and boron pair in diamond are studied by first-principles density-functional calculations with supercell models. The electronic structure calculated for the B-H complexes with C2v or C3v symmetry and the nearest-neighbor B pair is used to interpret recent experimental results such as B 1s x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, 11B nuclear quadruple resonance and B K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy, which cannot be explained solely by the isolated substitutional boron.
