Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of management strategies for blunt splenic injuries in adult patients. METHODS Patients 18 years and older with blunt splenic injuries registered via the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (2013-2019) were identified. Management strategies initiated within 24 hours of hospital presentation were classified as watchful waiting, embolization, surgery, or combination therapy. Patients were stratified by injury grade. Linear models estimated each strategy's effect on hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) LOS, and mortality. RESULTS Of 81,033 included patients, 86.3%, 10.9%, 2.5%, and 0.3% of patients received watchful waiting, surgery, embolization, and combination therapy, respectively. Among patients with low-grade injuries and compared with surgery, embolization was associated with shorter hospital LOS (9.4 days, Q < .001, Cohen's d = .30) and ICU LOS (5.0 days, Q < .001, Cohen's d = .44). Among patients with high-grade injuries and compared with surgery, embolization was associated with shorter hospital LOS (8.7 days, Q < .001, Cohen's d = .12) and ICU LOS (4.5 days, Q < .001, Cohen's d = .23). Among patients with low- and high-grade injuries, the odds ratios for in-hospital mortality associated with surgery compared with embolization were 4.02 (Q < .001) and 4.38 (Q < .001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Among patients presenting with blunt splenic injuries and compared with surgery, embolization was associated with shorter hospital LOS, shorter ICU LOS, and lower risk for mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the impact of a contrast mitigation protocol on imaging utilization for pulmonary embolism (PE) in the emergency department (ED). MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical records of ED patients with suspected PE who underwent CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) or ventilation-perfusion (VQ) scans were analyzed in control (3/15/22-4/15/22) and test (5/15/22-6/15/22) periods. The test period included a contrast mitigation protocol due to a global iodinated contrast shortage (05/2022-06/2022). Out of 610 scans, 28 were excluded for non-PE indications. Patient demographics, time metrics, and imaging reports were recorded. RESULTS Among 11,019 ED visits, there were 582 imaging events for suspected PE. The test period exhibited a significantly lower imaging rate of 4.16 % compared to 6.54 % in the control period (p < 0.001). CTPA usage decreased by 47.73 %, while VQ scan usage increased by 775.00 % during the test period. Test period positivity rate was 0.82 %, with CTPA at 0.58 % (1/173) and VQ scan at 1.43 % (1/70). In the control period, the positivity rate was 0.29 %, with CTPA at 0.30 % (1/331) and VQ scan at 0.00 % (0/8). Previous hospitalization history was significantly higher in the test period (70/243 vs. 39/339, p < 0.001). The positivity rates between the two periods showed no significant difference (p = 0.57). There were no significant differences in ED length of stay and image acquisition times. CONCLUSION The contrast mitigation protocol reduced CTPA use, increased VQ scans, and maintained positivity rates and image acquisition times. However, concerns persist about unnecessary imaging and low positivity rates, necessitating further research to optimize PE diagnostic algorithms.

Abstract
We describe implementation of a point-of-care system for simultaneous acquisition of patient photographs along with portable radiographs at a large academic hospital. During the implementation process, we observed several technical challenges in the areas of (1) hardware-automatic triggering for photograph acquisition, camera hardware enclosure, networking, and system server hardware and (2) software-post-processing of photographs. Additionally, we also faced cultural challenges involving workflow issues, communication with technologists and users, and system maintenance. We describe our solutions to address these challenges. We anticipate that these experiences will provide useful insights into deploying and iterating new technologies in imaging informatics.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the influence of time of day when a study is interpreted on discrepancy rates for common and advanced studies performed in the acute community setting. METHODS This retrospective study used the databank of a U.S. teleradiology company to retrieve studies between 2012 and 2016 with a preliminary report followed by a final report by the on-site client hospital. Neuroradiology, abdominal radiology, and musculoskeletal radiology studies were included. Teleradiologists were fellowship trained in one of these subspecialty areas. Daytime, evening, and overnight times were defined. Associations between major and minor discrepancies, time of day, and whether the study was common or advanced were tested with significance set at p = .05. RESULTS A total of 5,883,980 studies were analyzed. There were 8444 major discrepancies (0.14%) and 17,208 minor discrepancies (0.29%). For common studies, daytime (0.13%) and evening (0.13%) had lower major discrepancy rates compared to overnight (0.14%) (daytime to overnight, RR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.45, 0.72, p < 0.01 and evening to overnight, RR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.49,0.67, p < 0.01). Minor discrepancy rates for common studies were decreased for evening (0.29%) compared to overnight (0.30%) (RR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.80,0.99, p = 0.029). For advanced studies, daytime (.15%) had lower major discrepancy rates compared to evening (0.20%) and overnight (.23%) (daytime to evening, RR = 0.77, 95%CI: 0.61, 0.97, p = 0.028 and daytime to overnight, RR = 0.66, 95%CI: 0.50, 0.87, p ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSION Significantly higher major discrepancy rates for studies interpreted overnight suggest the need for radiologists to exercise greater caution when interpreting studies overnight and may require practice management strategies to help optimize overnight work conditions. The lower major discrepancy rates on advanced studies interpreted during the daytime suggest the need for reserving advanced studies for interpretation during the day when possible.

Abstract

Management strategies initiated within 24 hours of hospital presentation were classified as non-operative management (NOM), embolization, surgery, or combination therapy. Patients were stratified by injury grade. Linear models estimated each strategy's effect on hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) LOS, ventilator dependence, and mortality. RESULTS Of 78,127 included patients, 88.7%, 8.7%, 1.8%, and 0.8% of patients received NOM, surgery, embolization, and combination therapy, respectively. Among patients with low- (n = 62,237) and high-grade (n = 15,890) injuries and compared to all other management strategies, NOM was associated with the shortest hospital LOS and ICU LOS. Among patients with low-grade injuries and compared to surgery, embolization was associated with a shorter hospital LOS (9.7 days, P < .001, Cohen's d = .32) and ICU LOS (5.3 days, P < .001, Cohen's d = .36). Among patients with high-grade injuries and compared to surgery, embolization was associated with a shorter ICU LOS (6.0 days, P < .01, Cohen's d = .24). Among patients with low- and high-grade injuries and compared to embolization, surgery was associated with higher odds of mortality (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Among patients presenting with blunt liver injuries and compared to surgery, embolization was associated with a shorter ICU LOS and lower risk of mortality.

Utilizing a combined hospital and criminal justice database to identify risk factors for repeat firearm injury or violent-crime arrest among firearm victims. Abstract
Introduction: Identifying firearm victims with the greatest risk of repeat-firearm exposure and offering interventions has the potential to disrupt recurrent violence. This study explored risk factors associated with repeat violence among survivors of intentional firearm injury in a unique clinical and criminal justice (CJ) dataset. Methods: This study analyzed a retrospective cohort (n = 4058) of persons injured by nonfatal intentional firearm violence from 2013 to 2016 in one metropolitan area. Data were collected from a single level I trauma center, city police records, and state CJ databases from 1948 to 2019. The primary outcome of interest was another firearm injury or violent-crime arrest (defined as a violent or firearm felony offense). Results: Among 4058 nonfatal intentional firearm victims, 1202 (29.6%) individuals had a repeat-firearm injury or violent-crime arrest. In a bivariate analysis, history of mental, physical, and/or emotional abuse (odds ratio [OR], 1.62; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.40-1.86), mental health diagnosis (OR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.51-2.35), or illegal substance use (OR, 2.87; 95% CI, 2.48-3.32) was associated with increased risk of repeat-firearm injury or violent-crime arrest. Prior felony arrest (OR, 3.68; 95% CI, 3.19-4.24), prior incarceration (OR, 3.72; 95% CI, 3.04-4.56), prior firearm charge (OR, 4.06; 95% CI, 3.33-4.96), and suspected gang membership (OR, 8.69; 95% CI, 6.14-12.32) demonstrated the greatest association with significant repeat violence. Conclusions: Thirty percent of those who experienced an intentional firearm injury were found to have a repeat-firearm injury or violent-crime arrest multi-disciplinary interventions that address the complex needs of a CJ-involved population are needed to mitigate significant repeat violence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with cIAI in a multicentre study and to develop clinical prediction models (CPMs) to help identify patients at risk of mortality or relapse. METHODS A multicentre observational study was conducted from August 2016 to February 2017 in the UK. Adult patients diagnosed with cIAI were included. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to develop CPMs for mortality and cIAI relapse. The c-statistic was used to test model discrimination. Model calibration was tested using calibration slopes and calibration in the large (CITL). The CPMs were then presented as point scoring systems and validated further. RESULTS Overall, 417 patients from 31 surgical centres were included in the analysis. At 90 days after diagnosis, 17.3 per cent had a cIAI relapse and the mortality rate was 11.3 per cent. Predictors in the mortality model were age, cIAI aetiology, presence of a perforated viscus and source control procedure. Predictors of cIAI relapse included the presence of collections, outcome of initial management, and duration of antibiotic treatment. The c-statistic adjusted for model optimism was 0.79 (95 per cent c.i. 0.75 to 0.87) and 0.74 (0.73 to 0.85) for mortality and cIAI relapse CPMs. Adjusted calibration slopes were 0.88 (95 per cent c.i. 0.76 to 0.90) for the mortality model and 0.91 (0.88 to 0.94) for the relapse model; CITL was -0.19 (95 per cent c.i. -0.39 to -0.12) and - 0.01 (- 0.17 to -0.03) respectively. CONCLUSION Relapse of infection and death after complicated intra-abdominal infections are common. Clinical prediction models were developed to identify patients at increased risk of relapse or death after treatment, these now require external validation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantify changes in the management of pediatric patients with isolated splenic injury from 2007 to 2015. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients under 18 years old with registered splenic injury in the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2015) were identified. Splenic injuries were categorized into 5 management types: nonoperative management (NOM), embolization, splenic repair, splenectomy, or a combination therapy. Linear mixed models accounting for confounding variables were used to examine the direct impact of management on length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) days, and ventilator days. RESULTS Of included patients (n = 24,128), 90.3% (n = 21,789), 5.6% (n = 1,361), and 2.7% (n = 640) had NOM, splenectomy, and embolization, respectively. From 2007 to 2015, the rate of embolization increased from 1.5% to 3.5%, and the rate of splenectomy decreased from 6.9% to 4.4%. Combining injury grades, NOM was associated with the shortest LOS (5.1 days), ICU days (1.9 days), and ventilator days (0.5 day). Moreover, splenectomy was associated with longer LOS (10.1 days), ICU days (4.5 days), and ventilator days (2.1 days) than NOM. The average failure rate of NOM was 1.5% (180 failures/12,378 cases). Average embolization failure was 1.3% (6 failures/456 cases). Splenic artery embolization was associated with lower mortality than splenectomy (OR: 0.10, P <.001). No statistically significant difference was observed in mortality between embolization and NOM (OR: 0.96, P = 1.0). CONCLUSIONS In pediatric splenic injury, NOM is the most utilized and associated with favorable outcomes, most notably in grades III to V pediatric splenic injury. If intervention is needed, embolization is effective and increasingly utilized most significantly in lower grade injuries.

Abstract
AIMS In the pivotal Trastuzumab for Gastric Cancer (ToGA) trial, trastuzumab improved median survival in patients with advanced HER-2-positive gastric and gastroesophageal cancer from 11.1 to 13.8 months; however, its effectiveness in routine clinical practice has not been evaluated. Our objective was to evaluate the uptake and outcomes of trastuzumab in a population-based cohort of patients with oesophageal, gastroesophageal and gastric cancer in Ontario, Canada. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Ontario Cancer Registry and linked treatment records were used to identify all patients with oesophageal, gastroesophageal and gastric cancer treated with trastuzumab during 2012-2017. Outcomes were analysed from the time of first trastuzumab cycle and included a primary outcome (survival) and secondary outcomes (uptake, delivery, 30-day hospital admission and 30-day mortality). Trends over the study period and survival were evaluated. RESULTS In total, 476 patients with oesophageal, gastroesophageal and gastric cancer received trastuzumab during the study period. The mean age was 62 years, 78% (370/476) were male, and 65% (312/476) had gastric cancer. The annual number of patients receiving trastuzumab increased over the study period (53 in 2012 and 101 in 2017). The median number of cycles of trastuzumab delivered was six. Thirty-day hospital admission and mortality rates were 17% and 4%, respectively. The median overall survival was 282 days (9.3 months). CONCLUSIONS The median survival of patients treated with trastuzumab for advanced oesophageal, gastroesophageal and gastric cancer in routine practice is substantially less than that observed in the pivotal clinical trial. Studies of comparative effectiveness using real-world data offer insight into outcomes achieved in routine practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are associated with risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). It is unclear if an IPMN in individuals at high risk of PDAC should be considered as a positive screening result or as an incidental finding. Stratified familial pancreatic cancer (FPC) populations were used to determine if IPMN risk is linked to familial risk of PDAC. METHODS This is a cohort study of 321 individuals from 258 kindreds suspected of being FPC and undergoing secondary screening for PDAC through the European Registry of Hereditary Pancreatitis and Familial Pancreatic Cancer (EUROPAC). Computerised tomography, endoscopic ultrasound of the pancreas and magnetic resonance imaging were used. The risk of being a carrier of a dominant mutation predisposing to pancreatic cancer was stratified into three even categories (low, medium and high) based on: Mendelian probability, the number of PDAC cases and the number of people at risk in a kindred. RESULTS There was a median (interquartile range (IQR)) follow-up of 2 (0-5) years and a median (IQR) number of investigations per participant of 4 (2-6). One PDAC, two low-grade neuroendocrine tumours and 41 cystic lesions were identified, including 23 IPMN (22 branch-duct (BD)). The PDAC case occurred in the top 10% of risk, and the BD-IPMN cases were evenly distributed amongst risk categories: low (6/107), medium (10/107) and high (6/107) (P = 0.63). CONCLUSIONS The risk of finding BD-IPMN was independent of genetic predisposition and so they should be managed according to guidelines for incidental finding of IPMN.

Abstract
Lipofibromatous hamartoma is a rare and slow growing benign fibro-fatty tumor. It is characterized by the proliferation of mature adipocytes within the epineurium and the perineurium of the peripheral nerves. In the upper extremity, it most commonly affects the median nerve. Median nerve involvement commonly leads to pain, numbness, paresthesia and carpal tunnel syndrome. This article presents a case of lipofibromatous hamartoma in an 8-year-old child followed by a discussion of the epidemiology, diagnosis, imaging details and treatment options for this condition.

Abstract
Amyand's hernia is a rare and atypical hernia characterized by the herniation of the appendix into the inguinal sac. This hernia may be present without symptoms until inflammation of the appendix may lead to incarceration, strangulation, necrosis, perforation or rupture. Early symptoms include tenderness and inguinal swelling which may be misdiagnosed as a strangulated hernia. This condition can be difficult to diagnose clinically. Ultrasound and Computed Tomography may aid in diagnosis. This article presents a rare case of Amyand's hernia followed by a discussion of the epidemiology, diagnosis, imaging details and treatment options for this condition.

A 56-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 5-hour history of throat swelling and pain and difficulty breathing that was exacerbated by supine positioning; he had not had any obvious antecedent trauma. His medical history included prostate cancer, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, deep-vein thrombosis, and stroke. Abstract
The elbow is a complex synovial hinge joint that is frequently involved in both athletic and nonathletic injuries. A thorough understanding of the normal anatomy and various injury patterns is essential when utilizing diagnostic imaging to identify damaged structures and to assist in surgical planning. In this review, the elbow anatomy will be scrutinized in a systematic approach. This will be followed by a comprehensive presentation of elbow injuries that are commonly seen in the emergency department accompanied by multimodality imaging findings. A short discussion regarding pitfalls in elbow imaging is also included.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical interventions are complex, with multiple components that require consideration in trial reporting. This review examines the reporting of details of surgical interventions in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) within the context of explanatory and pragmatic study designs. METHODS Systematic searches identified RCTs of surgical interventions published in 2010 and 2011. Included studies were categorized as predominantly explanatory or pragmatic. The extent of intervention details in the reports were compared with the CONSORT statement for reporting trials of non-pharmacological treatments (CONSORT-NPT). CONSORT-NPT recommends reporting the descriptions of surgical interventions, whether they were standardized and adhered to (items 4a, 4b and 4c). Reporting of the context of intervention delivery (items 3 and 15) and operator expertise (item 15) were assessed. RESULTS Of 4541 abstracts and 131 full-text articles, 80 were included (of which 39 were classified as predominantly pragmatic), reporting 160 interventions. Descriptions of 129 interventions (80.6 per cent) were provided. Standardization was mentioned for 47 (29.4 per cent) of the 160 interventions, and 22 articles (28 per cent) reported measurement of adherence to at least one aspect of the intervention. Seventy-one papers (89 per cent) provided some information about context. For one-third of interventions (55, 34.4 per cent), some data were provided regarding the expertise of personnel involved. Reporting standards were similar in trials classified as pragmatic or explanatory. CONCLUSION The lack of detail in trial reports about surgical interventions creates difficulties in understanding which operations were actually evaluated. Methods for designing and reporting surgical interventions in RCTs, contributing to the quality of the overall study design, are required. This should allow better implementation of trial results into practice.

Abstract
We present a rare case of fistulation of a dermoid cyst with the transverse colon. We illustrate how an infected dermoid cyst can be diagnosed as an appendix abscess although the management of these is quite different. The general surgeon should be aware of this as a differential diagnosis for an appendix abscess.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Predicted patient life expectancy, based on a patient's medical history, is an important component of medical decision making. This study therefore aimed to determine the consistency, accuracy and precision with which doctors, nurses and medical students predict life expectancy (LE). METHODS 20 doctors, 20 nurses and 20 medical students (4th and 5th year) independently examined 70 hypothetical patient case scenarios containing age, sex and comorbidity; this included 13 duplicate scenarios. Accuracy and consistency of prediction was assessed by comparison with statistical LE estimates generated using evidence-based actuarial and life insurance industry methods in collaboration with a team of professional actuaries. RESULTS Doctors, nurses and medical students underestimated LE by a mean (95% confidence interval) of -1.46 (-0.31 to -2.61), -1.79 (-0.52 to -3.06) and -2.24 (-1.16 to -3.32) years with an equivalent root mean squared error (RMSE) of 4.74, 5.49 and 5.08 years respectively. LE predictions were equal to actuarial LE in less than 10% of cases and accurate to within 25% of actuarial LE in less than 45% of cases. Intra-observer reliability was 91%, 85% and 87% for doctors, nurses and medical students respectively. Inter-observer reliability was 66%, 57% and 57% for the three groups. CONCLUSION Doctors, nurses and medical students were inconsistent, inaccurate and imprecise in their prediction of LE with a tendency toward underestimation. This may lead to patients being managed inappropriately. There is a need for improved training and objective outcome prediction models.

Abstract
e15026 Background: To develop a methodology that results in an optimized CT Treatment Response Score (CTRS) for prediction of survival using quantified changing lesion features. Methods: We evaluated the overall survival (OS) predictive value of a new methodology to assess CT scan-based responses versus RECIST guidelines in a homogenous metastatic colorectal cancer population. All patients (pts) with MCRC treated with cetuximab and irinotecan (cet & irino) between 2005 and 2008 in our Center after failure of prior oxaliplatin and fluoropyrimidine were included in this analysis. Other inclusion criteria included: at least 6 weeks of cet & irino and serial CT scans on cet & irino including baseline performed in our Center. 38 pts (22 men, 16 women, mean age = 62, range = 28–91 ) were included. CT scans were interpreted by 2 trained physician assistants initially independently with differences resolved by consensus. Parameters evaluated included change in tumor size using standard RECIST and visual based (VB) assessment, VB assessment of enhancement, and interval development of new lesions.VB scoring used Likert-type scales to code reader confidence as to change in an imaging characteristic (size, enhancement) and the presence/absence of a characteristic (new lesions). The most predictive parameters for OS were used to generate the CTRS with an overall range of -2 (definite tumor decrease) to +2 (definite tumor increase). Results: The optimal CTRS resulted from combining VB assessment of change in size of existing lesions and new lesion development. This resulted in prediction of survival with a Cox Hazard Ratio of 1.639 (p = 0.0008). Using a threshold value of 0 to generate good (scores ≤ 0) and poor (scores > 0) response groups resulted in probabilities of survival at 8 months (ms) of 75% (16 pts) and 32% (22 pts), median survival times of 13.3 ms (95% CI = 10.94 ms, 17.81 ms) and 5.06 ms (95% CI = 3.84 ms, 8.77 ms), respectively. CTRS was easier to perform and appeared to be more predictive of OS outcome than RECIST. Conclusions: The methodology results in a single CTRS with transparent for others to test and understandable in terms of predicting survival for pts and caretakers. This methodology needs validation in a larger patient data set and across various tumors and lines of treatment. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
2024 Background: Targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in glioblastoma is effective in a subset of patients whose tumors express the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) tumor suppressor gene and overexpress the EGF variant vIII receptor. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the clinical activity of the EGFR inhibitor erlotinib when combined with carboplatin and to determine molecular predictors of response. The primary endpoint is progression-free survival (PFS). To be eligible for the study, patients had to have recurrent, histologically confirmed glioblastoma or gliosarcoma, no more than two prior relapses, a KPS = 60, and no enzyme-inducing anticonvulsants. Methods: In this ongoing phase II study, patients are given carboplatin intravenously on day 1 of every 28-day cycle to achieve a target AUC of 6 (mg x ml/min) based on creatinine clearance. Erlotinib is administered orally once daily throughout the 28-day cycle at 150 mg/day with dose escalation to 200 mg/day, as tolerated. Patients undergo clinical and MRI assessment every 4 weeks. The primary endpoint is median PFS using a Bayesian time-to-event design. To determine histologic correlates of response, tumor tissue is undergoing immunohistochemical evaluation for known markers of response to EGFR inhibitors, including PI3K/AKT and PTEN status. Results: Of the first 20 patients enrolled, 17 were evaluable and all had failed temozolomide-based therapy. The median age is 56 years, and the median KPS is 80. The median time to progression is 15.2 weeks with a 95% credible interval of 8.0 to 28.4 weeks. These results compare favorably with historical data (median of 9.0 weeks, 95% CI of 8.1 to 10.1 weeks). Bayesian analysis using computer-based simulations indicate a high probability (69%) that the median PFS in our study is at least 3 weeks longer than the historical median PFS. Grade 3 and 4 toxicities included fatigue, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and rash requiring dose reductions. Conclusions: The results from this ongoing study suggest that the combination of carboplatin and erlotinib has promising activity in patients with recurrent glioblastoma who have failed temozolomide-based therapy. Abstract
We previously reported an enhancement of pancreatic carcinogenesis induced by N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP) in hamsters fed diets containing high levels of corn oil. The research presented here compared diets high in corn oil with those high in beef tallow in the enhancement of pancreatic carcinogenesis. Pancreatic cancer was induced with 20 mg BOP/kg body wt, s.c. administered at 8 weeks of age. One week later, hamsters were assigned to one of five diet treatments: (i) 4.3% corn oil (control); (ii) 20.5% corn oil (high corn oil); (iii) 0.5% corn oil + 3.8% beef tallow (low beef tallow); (iv) 0.6% corn oil + 19.9% beef tallow (high beef tallow); and (v) 5.1% corn oil + 15.4% beef tallow (high fat mixture). These diets were fed until the study ended 84 weeks after BOP treatment. Hamsters were trained through pair feeding to consume the same calorie allotment as the control corn oil group. By the end of the experiment, BOP-treated hamsters that were fed diets containing beef tallow were consistently heavier than those fed corn oil. Survival was longer in hamsters fed the high-beef tallow and high-fat mixture compared with the other diet groups. Tumor data were age adjusted to correct for survival differences. Pancreatic adenoma incidence and multiplicity (no./effective animal) were higher in hamsters fed beef tallow than those fed corn oil diets. Carcinoma in situ multiplicity was elevated in hamsters fed high-fat diets irrespective of the nature of fat fed. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma multiplicity was elevated in hamsters fed the low- or high-beef tallow diets compared with the low- or high-corn oil diets. The mixture of fat resulted in an intermediate yield.

Abstract
In a retrospective study the grey-scale ultrasonographic appearance of pelvic masses was correlated with the surgical findings in 93 patients. Of the masses found at the time of laparotomy 95% had been detected preoperatively. In most instances useful information about size, consistency and location of the mass was provided by ultrasonography. Certain pathologic entities produce a characteristic sonographic appearance, but there is a wide overlap for others. Data obtained by history-taking and physical examination must be integrated with the sonographic findings for a correct diagnosis.
