Abstract
BACKGROUND Menopausal symptoms are common among middle-aged women. Working women with severe menopausal symptoms are more likely to experience presenteeism-a condition where employees continue to work despite feeling unwell. However, it remains unclear as to which specific symptoms women experience during the menopausal transition and postmenopausal periods that primarily contribute to presenteeism. AIMS To evaluate the associations between types of menopausal symptoms and presenteeism among Japanese women. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 4000 women aged 40-59 years who were currently working was conducted in Japan in September 2022. We used an online self-administered questionnaire that included items on demographic characteristics, the Menopause Rating Scale for measuring menopausal symptoms and the Work Functioning Impairment Scale for measuring presenteeism. Logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS Women with severe overall menopausal symptoms had 12.18-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 9.09-16.33, P < 0.001) increased odds of presenteeism compared with those without symptoms. Participants with psychological symptoms also had significantly higher presenteeism (severe: odds ratio: 9.18, 95% CI 6.60-12.78, P < 0.001). However, after controlling for psychological symptoms, there were no significant associations between somatic and urogenital symptoms and presenteeism. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that menopausal symptoms, especially psychological symptoms, have a significant impact on presenteeism among Japanese women. Organizations need to address menopausal symptoms in the workplace, with an emphasis on reducing work-related stress for women with menopausal symptoms.

Effects of Radiation Doses on Clinical Recurrence in Patients with Biochemically Recurrent Prostate Cancer after Prostatectomy. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:e444. Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Salvage radiotherapy (SRT) to the prostate bed is the only curative treatment for patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy (RP). Although several systematic reviews indicated that a dose escalation in the range of 60-70 Gy improved biochemical control, the effects of radiation doses on clinical relapse after SRT remain unclear. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between radiation doses and clinical relapse-free survival (cRFS) after SRT. MATERIALS/METHODS We identified 295 eligible patients receiving SRT for biochemically recurrent prostate cancer after RP between 2005 and 2018 at 15 institutions. Sixteen patients (5%) received short-term (< 6 months) androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) following RP and/or concurrently with SRT. SRT was delivered to the prostate and seminal vesicle bed using photon beams at a median (range) dose of 66 Gy (61-85) in 1.8-3.0 Gy fractions. The primary outcome was cRFS. Clinical relapse was identified on radiological imaging and/or biopsy and included local recurrence, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis. In all analyses, doses were recalculated as an equivalent dose in 2-Gy fractions (EQD2) with α/β = 1.5 Gy. Clinical RFS between the EQD2 ≥ 66 Gy (n = 229) and EQD2 < 66 Gy (n = 66) groups were compared using the Log-rank test, followed by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses and a subgroup analysis. RESULTS The median follow-up duration was 73 months. Among patients with BCR (n = 119), 79 of 96 (82%) in the EQD2 ≥ 66 Gy group and 21 of 23 (91%) in the EQD2 < 66 Gy group received second salvage ADT (p = 0.36). Among all patients (n = 295), clinical relapse was identified in 22 (7%) patients after SRT. Six-year biochemical relapse-free survival (bRFS), cRFS, cancer-specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS) rates were 58%, 93%, 98%, and 94%, respectively. Six-year cRFS rates were 94% (95% confidence interval [CI], 90-97) in the EQD2 ≥ 66 Gy group and 87% (95% CI, 75-93) in the EQD2 < 66 Gy group (p = 0.020). The multivariate analysis revealed that EQD2 < 66 Gy, Gleason score ≥ 8, seminal vesicle involvement, and PSA at BCR ≥ 0.5 ng/ml correlated with clinical relapse (p = 0.0016, 0.014, 0.011, and 0.027, respectively). The subgroup analysis showed the consistent benefit of EQD2 ≥ 66 Gy in patients across most subgroups including PSA at BCR after RP, extracapsular extension, and age at SRT. CONCLUSION This large multi-institutional observational study demonstrated that a higher SRT dose (EQD2 ≥ 66 Gy) resulted in superior cRFS. The present result supports the dose recommendations in the 2023 National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines (64-72 Gy) even in terms of clinical relapse. Prospective trial is warranted to investigate an upper threshold for optimal SRT dose.

Abstract
Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for quantitative fluorescence imaging because fluorescence lifetime is independent of concentration of fluorescent molecules or excitation/detection efficiency and is robust to photobleaching. However, since most FLIMs are based on point-to-point measurements, mechanical scanning of a focal spot is needed for forming an image, which hampers rapid imaging. Here, we demonstrate scan-less full-field FLIM based on a one-to-one correspondence between two-dimensional (2D) image pixels and frequency-multiplexed radio frequency (RF) signals. A vast number of dual-comb optical beats between dual optical frequency combs are effectively adopted for 2D spectral mapping and high-density frequency multiplexing in the RF region. Bimodal images of fluorescence amplitude and lifetime are obtained with high quantitativeness from amplitude and phase spectra of fluorescence RF comb modes without the need for mechanical scanning. The parallelized FLIM will be useful for rapid quantitative fluorescence imaging in life science.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), inhibits both EGFR-TKI sensitizing mutations and resistant T790M mutations detected in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Cardiac adverse events (AEs) induced by osimertinib are infrequent; however, cases of severe associated cardiac dysfunction have been reported and remain poorly understood.
Purpose
To assess pathogenesis of osimertinib-associated cardiac AEs, we analyzed myocardial specimens of three NSCLC cases with osimertinib-associated cardiac dysfunction.
Results
Analysis of LVEF prior to and after osimertinb administration in 36 NSCLC patients showed significant decrease of LVEF from 69% to 63%. Within this cohort, right ventricular (RV) biopsy was performed in 2 cases to further understand the pathophysiology of cardiac dysfunction. Case 1 was 78-year-old female with advanced NSCLC harboring an EGFR L858R mutation was treated with osimertinib as second line therapy. After 3 moths of osimetinib treatment, she presented with dyspnea, high NT-proBNP and troponin I, and significantly decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at 28%. RV biopsy showed moderate cardiomyocyte hypertrophy without inflammatory cell infiltration. Case 2 was 52-year-old female with advanced NSCLC harboring L858R mutation. She was treated with osimertinib as first line therapy. After 2 weeks of osimertinib, screening echocardiography revealed a reduction of LVEF from 63% to 41% without cardiac symptom. RV biopsy showed mild cardiomyocyte hypertrophy with infiltration of a few inflammatory cells in interstinum. We further analyzed death case of NSCLC. Case 3 was 63-year-old female with advanced NSCLC harboring EGFR ex. 19 del. and T790M mutations. After 6 months of osimertinib, she suffered from severe respiratory failure and severely reduced LVEF at 27%. She died on the 44th day after admission. Pathological autopsy revealed mild to moderate cardiomyocyte hypertrophy without inflammatory cell infiltration in both ventricles. These pathological findings may indicate neither myocyte injury nor myocarditis was induced by osimertinib in myocardium.
Conclusion
Although additional data collection of advanced NSCLC patients will be important in understanding the pathophysiology of cardiac AEs with osimertinib, osimertinib-associated cardiotoxicity may result from functional inhibition of myocyte contractility by osimertinib without induction of cell death or inflammation.

Abstract
We have previously reported tough inorganic/organic nanocomposite (NC) ion gels composed of silica particles and poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAAm) networks and a large amount of ionic liquid. In this study, the network structure and toughening mechanism of NC ion gels were investigated. The NC ion gels showed characteristic mechanical properties; i.e. the stress was significantly increased at a highly elongated state. In addition, the NC ion gels showed an almost elastic mechanical property, which was completely different from that of our other developed inorganic/organic tough ion gels named double-network (DN) ion gels. It was found from structural observation that secondary silica nanoparticles dispersed well in the NC ion gel. It was also found that some of the secondary silica nanoparticles had a ring-like structure which would incorporate PDMAAm chains. From the silica particle content dependency on stress–strain curves of inorganic/organic NC ion gels, it was inferred that the secondary silica particles could serve as a movable cross-linker of PDMAAm chains in the NC ion gel. Energy dissipation via the internal fracture of the silica particle network in inorganic/organic double network ion gels. SOFT MATTER 2020; 16:2363-2370. Abstract
Inorganic/organic double network (DN) ion gels, which are composed of an inorganic silica particle network, an organic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAAm) network, and a large amount of ionic liquid, showed excellent mechanical strength of over 25 MPa compression fracture stress at an 80 wt% ionic liquid content. The excellent mechanical strength of these inorganic/organic DN ion gels was attributed to the energy dissipation of the inorganic/organic DN structure. It has been considered that the energy dissipation in inorganic/organic DN ion gels is caused by the internal fracture of the silica particle network, which is preferentially fractured by deformation. However, no studies aiming to investigate the internal fracture of the silica particle network in inorganic/organic DN ion gels have been conducted by direct approaches. In this study, the internal fracture of the silica particle network in the inorganic/organic DN ion gel was directly evaluated by a small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The synchrotron SAXS measurements conducted under a uniaxial loading-unloading process demonstrated that the aggregation size of the silica particle network irreversibly decreased with uniaxial stretch. Based on these results, it was clarified that the energy dissipation of the inorganic/organic DN ion gels was attributed to the internal fracture of the silica particle network.

P1570Cardiac strain detects subclinical decline of cardiac function after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with hematologic malignancies. Eur Heart J 2019. Abstract
Abstract
Background
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been established as a treatment of various hematologic malignancies and improved their prognoses. HSCT includes intensive chemotherapy and systemic radiation, which occasionally induces cardiac dysfunction. However, early predictor of cardiac dysfunction associated with HSCT is still elusive. Recently, left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) has been recognized as an early detector of cardiotoxicity. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed GLS and cardiac parameters in patients with hematologic malignancies before and after HSCT to explore HSCT-induced cardiac dysfunction.
Methods
Thirty-one consecutive patients undergone HSCT were enrolled and reviewed their cardiac comorbidities, medications, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy before HSCT. Transthoracic echocardiographic variables including GLS, cardiac troponin-I, and B-type natriuretic peptide were analyzed prior to and 1 month after HSCT.
Results
The patients were 49.7±13.5 years of age, 61% were male, and 52% had cardiovascular risk factors. Cardiac troponin-I was significantly increased following HSCT from 0.010±0.002 ng/ml to 0.016±0.014 ng/ml (P=0.02), indicating that HSCT should have certain impact on cardiac myocytes. Echocardiographic analyses revealed that LV GLS was significantly decreased after HSCT from −19.4±0.8% to −18.8±0.8% (P<0.001), whereas there was no significant difference in LV ejection fraction between these time points of HSCT (63.6±5.5% vs. 64.7±4.6%; P=0.13). Although there was no correlation between the decline of GLS and the increase of troponin-I in this cohort, these results clearly indicated that GLS, but not LVEF, predicted HSCT-induced early and subclinical cardiac dysfunction at 1 month after the HSCT.
Conclusion
GLS detected early decline of cardiac function after HSCT in the patients with hematologic malignancies. Further follow-up investigations will reveal relationship between GLS, troponin-I and prognosis of cardiac function after HSCT in patients with hematologic malignancies.

Abstract
Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have been drawing increasing attention due to the high permeability and high rejection capabilities for highly efficient wastewater treatment applications. Nonetheless, improving the water permeance while maintaining the high rejection capability is still an ongoing challenge for the practically state-of-the-art MMMs. Herein, a new class of poly(ether sulfone) (PES) based MMM containing metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofillers of HKUST-1 and blending with poly(methyl methacrylate- co-methacrylic acid) (PMMA- co-MAA) copolymer, designated as HKUST-1@mPES MMM, were developed for the highly efficient ultrafiltration (UF) process. In this study, the nanosized HKUST-1 nanofillers were removed by water dissolution as sacrificial templating materials, so that the additional nanovoids were deliberately generated throughout the dense polymer matrix. The introduction of PMMA- co-MAA copolymer facilitated the even dispersion of HKUST-1 nanofillers in a polymer matrix, by constructing the bridge connection between inorganic nanofillers and organic matrix. The resultant HKUST-1@mPES MMM exhibited a high pure water permeability (PWP) up to 490 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, substantially reaching nearly 3 times higher than that of the mPES membrane without HKUST-1 nanofillers loading and maintaining a relatively high BSA rejection rate of 96% without obvious deterioration. The newly developed HKUST-1@mPES MMM thereby exhibited a comparable separation efficiency compared to the cutting-edge UF membranes reported so far. Overall, the nanovoid-generated approach provides new insight into developing advanced MMMs used for highly efficient water treatment applications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION High-flow priapism in children is a very rare condition, and there is no clear consensus on its management. High-flow priapism is associated with increased cavernosal blood flow and broadly divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of arteriocavernous fistula in the corpora cavernosa. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the appropriate management of high-flow priapism based on the existence of arteriocavernous fistula using penile color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) findings in the pediatric population. STUDY DESIGN The cases of four boys aged between 6 and 11 years with high-flow priapism treated between 2009 and 2017 are reported. Two boys had prior perineal trauma, one boy had blunt penile glans trauma, and one had no obvious cause for the condition. All boys initially underwent penile CDU and were treated conservatively or via selective arterial embolization depending upon the presence or absence of an arteriocavernous fistula. RESULTS Penile CDU revealed an arteriocavernous fistula inside the corpus cavernosum penis in two of four boys and increased blood flow inside the corpus spongiosum in the remaining boys. The former two boys underwent selective arterial embolization and one boy underwent repeated embolization because of remaining arteriocavernous fistula feeding from the contralateral cavernosal artery, whereas the boys with no arteriocavernous fistula on CDU were managed conservatively. All boys were successfully treated within 1 month, and they had normal morning erection and no evidence of recurrent priapism at the follow-up. DISCUSSION Unlike low-flow priapism, high-flow priapism is not a medical emergency. Therefore, conservative therapy is an appropriate initial treatment, although selective arterial embolization can be effective for high-flow priapism with arteriocavernous fistula, with a success rate of 97% and no reported complications to date. Penile CDU is an imaging technique that can detect focal areas of turbulent flow with sensitivity close to 100%. This study has several limitations including a small number of cases, limited follow-up duration, and possibility of spontaneous arteriocavernous fistula closure in cases treated by arterial embolization. CONCLUSION Penile CDU could be a reliable tool to diagnose high-flow priapism and detect the presence or absence of arteriocavernous fistula. Although conservative therapy remains the first choice, selective arterial embolization may be an early treatment option when CDU reveals an arteriocavernous fistula.

Abstract
Tough inorganic/organic composite network gels consisting of a partially developed silica-particle network and a large amount of an ionic liquid, named micro-double-network (μ-DN) ion gel, are fabricated via two methods. One is a one-pot/one-step process conducted using a simultaneous network formation via sol-gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate and free radical polymerization of N, N-dimethylacrylamide in an ionic liquid. When the network formation rates of the inorganic and organic networks are almost the same, the μ-DN structure is formed. The second method is simpler and involved the use of silica nanoparticles as the starting material. By controlling the dispersion state of the silica nanoparticles in an ionic liquid, the μ-DN structure is formed. In both μ-DN ion gels, silica nanoparticles partially aggregate and form network-like clusters. When a large deformation is induced in the μ-DN ion gels, the silica-particle clusters rupture and dissipate the loaded energy. The fracture stress and Young's modulus of the μ-DN ion gel increase as the size of the silica nanoparticles decreases. The increment in the mechanical strength would have been caused by the increase in the total van der Waals attraction forces and the total number of hydrogen bonding in the silica-particle networks.

[PMID: 29372113 PMCID: PMC5782826 DOI: 10.1167/tvst.7.1.11] [Citation(s) in RCA: 40] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/14/2017] [Accepted: 11/21/2017] [Indexed: 01/28/2023] Open
Abstract
Purpose To investigate the site specificity of visual field changes in eyes with normotensive preperimetric glaucoma (PPG), and to determine factors influencing visual field progression. Methods This prospective study comprised 84 eyes of 84 normotensive PPG patients followed for at least 16 months. Optic nerve head (ONH) blood flow was assessed with tissue-area mean blur rate (MBRT), derived from laser speckle flowgraphy. Total deviation (TD) was measured in each sector of the Garway-Heath map to evaluate the site specificity of visual field loss. Subjects with a TD slope in the first quartile were classified as progressive, and other subjects as nonprogressive. Linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to determine factors affecting visual field progression. Results TD in the superior sector significantly decreased in the subjects overall during the follow-up periods (−0.48 ± 1.92 dB/y, P = 0.025). Linear regression analysis showed that basal MBRT-inferior was correlated significantly with TD-superior slope (r = 0.332, P = 0.002). Furthermore, basal MBRT was significantly lower in this sector in the progressive than the nonprogressive group (P = 0.010). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that basal MBRT-inferior was the only predictive factor for TD-superior slope (β = 0.329, P = 0.005). Conclusions These findings suggest that superior-sector visual field progression is most common in normotensive PPG eyes, and that reduced basal ONH blood flow is associated with visual field progression. Translational Relevance These findings provide new insight into the involvement of ONH blood flow impairment in glaucoma pathogenesis, and demonstrate the importance of assessing ONH blood flow to determine visual field progression in normotensive PPG.

Abstract
PURPOSE Recently, the number of births using assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has increased. An associated increase in the incidence of congenital malformations in babies conceived using this technology has also been reported. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the rate of malformations in babies with neonatal surgical diseases, who were conceived using ART. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2007 and December 2016, 1737 patients were admitted to our hospital. We analyzed the incidence of congenital cardiac diseases, genetic anomalies, and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) in neonates conceived by ART. The χ2 test and logistic regression analysis were used to assess the odds ratios (ORs) for congenital malformations. A P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS The OR for CAKUT was 16.94 for the first-birth neonates conceived using ART, [P < 0.05, AUC (area under the curve) = 0.86]. However, for non-surgery neonates, the OR for CAKUT was 5.99 (P = 0.15, AUC = 0.87), compared to 32.27 (P < 0.05, AUC = 0.93) for parallel conditions in surgery-neonates. CONCLUSION Neonates conceived using ART are prone to develop CAKUT, which will need surgical treatment. Therefore, more management is necessary for associated malformations in these babies, particularly in cases with CAKUT.

Abstract
Purpose There is no consensus on the diagnosis or treatment policy for Preperimetric Glaucoma (PPG) because the pathogenesis of PPG is not clear at this time. Preperimetric Glaucoma Prospective Observational Study (PPGPS) is a first multicenter, prospective, observational study to clarify the pathogenesis of PPG. This article indicates study design, patient baseline characteristics, and analysis focused on optic nerve head (ONH) blood flow in PPG, as well as the intraocular pressure (IOP) -lowering effect and ONH blood flow-improving effects of Tafluprost. Method In this study, 122 eyes from 122 subjects (mean age: 53.1 ± 14.3) newly diagnosed as PPG were enrolled. The circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT) was evaluated with optical coherence tomography (OCT). The ONH blood flow was measured with laser speckle flowgraphy. The therapeutic effect of Tafluprost was evaluated at Month 0 (ONH blood flow-improving effect) and Month 4 (IOP-lowering effect). Results The untreated IOP, cpRNFLT, and baseline Mean deviation (MD) value was 16.4 ± 2.5 mmHg, 80.4 ± 8.2 μm, and -0.48 ± 1.29 dB, respectively. In the site-specific visual field evaluation using the sector map, there was no appreciable site-specific visual field defect in the eye with PPG. The inferior region of cpRNFLT in 4-quadrant OCT sector analysis and 6 o’clock region in 12-o’clock OCT sector analysis was the highest rate of abnormality in PPG eyes. Topical administration of Tafluprost significantly reduced IOP from 16.4 ± 2.5 mmHg at baseline to 14.5 ± 2.3 mmHg at Month 4 (P < 0.001, paired t-test). In the linear regression analysis, there was a significant relationship between the increase of ONH blood flow and baseline value. Conclusion PPGPS is a first prospective study focusing on the pathology of PPG. This study is expected to elucidate the pathology of PPG, with evidence useful for determining a treatment strategy for PPG.

Abstract
Highly robust ion gels, termed double-network (DN) ion gels, composed of inorganic/organic interpenetrating networks and a large amount of ionic liquids (ILs), are fabricated. The DN ion gels with an 80 wt% IL content show extraordinarily high mechanical strength: more than 28 MPa of compressive fracture stress. In the DN ion gel preparation, a brittle inorganic network of physically bonded silica nanoparticles and a ductile organic network of polydimethylacrylamide (PDMAAm) are formed in the IL. Because of the different reaction mechanisms of the inorganic/organic networks, the DN ion gels can be formed by an easy and free-shapeable one-pot synthesis. They can be prepared in a controllable manner by manipulating the formation order of the inorganic and organic networks via not only multistep but also single-step processes. When silica particles form a network prior to the PDMAAm network formation, DN ion gels can be prepared. The brittle silica particle network in the DN ion gel, serving as sacrificial bonds, easily ruptures under loading to dissipate energy, while the ductile PDMAAm network maintains the shape of the material by the rubber elasticity. Given the reversible physical bonding between the silica particles, the DN ion gels exhibit a significant degree of self-recovery by annealing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the histological and mechanical features of tendon healing in a rabbit model with second-harmonic-generation (SHG) imaging and tensile testing. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of eight male Japanese white rabbits were used for this study. The flexor digitorum tendons in their right leg were sharply transected, and then were repaired by intratendinous stitching. At four weeks post-operatively, the rabbits were killed and the flexor digitorum tendons in both right and left legs were excised and used as specimens for tendon healing (n = 8) and control (n = 8), respectively. Each specimen was examined by SHG imaging, followed by tensile testing, and the results of the two testing modalities were assessed for correlation. RESULTS While the SHG light intensity of the healing tendon samples was significantly lower than that of the uninjured tendon samples, 2D Fourier transform SHG images showed a clear difference in collagen fibre structure between the uninjured and the healing samples, and among the healing samples. The mean intensity of the SHG image showed a moderate correlation (R2 = 0.37) with Young's modulus obtained from the tensile testing. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that SHG microscopy may be a potential indicator of tendon healing.Cite this article: E. Hase, K. Sato, D. Yonekura, T. Minamikawa, M. Takahashi, T. Yasui. Abstract
BACKGROUND No potential tumour markers have been validated for prognosis in endometrial cancer. However, carcinoembryonic antigen (cea) is one of the most widely used tumour markers in various types of cancer. Although cea expression in endometrial cancer has been investigated, its prognostic value remains controversial, and no studies have investigated serum cea levels in large case series. In the present study, we investigated diagnostic and prognostic applications of serum cea for endometrial cancer. METHODS This prospective study was approved by our Institutional Review Board. Between January 2006 and December 2012, serum cea was measured prospectively in 215 patients with endometrial cancer and was subsequently measured during treatment and at scheduled follow-up examinations in patients with elevated baseline serum cea. RESULTS During the study period, 215 patients (142 stage i, 19 stage ii, 32 stage iii, 22 stage iv) were treated for endometrial cancer. By the time of last follow-up, 52 had relapsed (24.2%), and the median follow-up duration was 45 months (range: 1-95 months). Elevated serum cea was identified in 25 patients (11.6%) and was associated with histologic type (p = 0.04), histologic grade (p = 0.03), and myometrial invasion depth (p = 0.01). Elevated serum cea was not related to clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, age, menopausal status, or body mass index. Relapse of disease was related to elevated serum cea (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Serum cea is a potential prognostic indicator for endometrial cancer.

Optic Nerve Head Blood Flow, as Measured by Laser Speckle Flowgraphy, Is Significantly Reduced in Preperimetric Glaucoma. Curr Eye Res 2016; 41:1447-1453. Abstract
PURPOSE To compare optic nerve head (ONH) blood flow in healthy eyes, eyes with preperimetric glaucoma (PPG), and eyes with mild normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) using laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG). METHODS In 172 eyes (normal: 44 eyes; PPG: 62 eyes; mild NTG: 66 eyes), LSFG was used to measure mean blur rate in the ONH tissue area (MBRT), an index of capillary blood flow. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine factors affecting circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT), mean deviation (MD) and pattern standard deviation (PSD) of the visual field. RESULTS Despite similar characteristics in age, refractive error and systemic variables among the study groups, MBRT in the normal eyes differed significantly from both the PPG and mild NTG eyes (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis revealed that MBRT was an independent factor affecting cpRNFLT, MD and PSD (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.003, respectively). CONCLUSION ONH blood flow was detectibly reduced in eyes with PPG, in close association with structural and visual field damage. This suggests that measuring ONH tissue-area blood flow with LSFG may be a useful way of monitoring glaucoma severity, even in the early stages of glaucoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prevalence of ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is lower than that of knee OA, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying the difference remain unrevealed. In the present study, we developed mouse ankle OA models for use as tools to investigate pathophysiology of ankle OA and molecular characteristics of ankle cartilage. DESIGN We anatomically and histologically examined ankle and knee joints of C57BL/6 mice, and compared them with human samples. We examined joints of 8-week-old and 25-month-old mice. For experimental models, we developed three different ankle OA models: a medial model, a lateral model, and a bilateral model, by resection of respective structures. OA severity was evaluated 8 weeks after the surgery by safranin O staining, and cartilage degradation in the medial model was sequentially examined. RESULTS Anatomical and histological features of human and mouse ankle joints were comparable. Additionally, the mouse ankle joint was more resistant to cartilage degeneration with aging than the mouse knee joint. In the medial model, the tibiotalar joint was markedly affected while the subtalar joint was less degenerated. In the lateral model, the subtalar joint was mainly affected while the tibiotalar joint was less altered. In the bilateral model, both joints were markedly degenerated. In the time course of the medial model, TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining and Adamts5 expression were enhanced at early and middle stages, while Mmp13 expression was gradually increased during the OA development. CONCLUSION Since human and mouse ankles are comparable, the present models will contribute to ankle OA pathophysiology and general cartilage research in future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Krukenberg tumors mostly occur after 40 years. Metastatic ovarian tumors in young age are very rare. CASE A 18-year-old female presented with colon cancer which was accompanied by Krukenberg tumor. The present case was a very rare case of metastatic ovarian tumor in very young age. The present patient presented with abdominal pain. On examination, colon tumor was detected and bilateral ovary were almost normal with only slight swelling. During the operation for colon tumor, biopsy of bilateral ovary was performed for histopathological evaluation. Although there were no specific findings in bilateral ovary, microscopic examination revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, diffusely invading the ovarian parenchyma. Diagnosis of colon cancer was made postoperatively and ovarian Krukenberg tumor was confirmed. CONCLUSION In case of suspecting colon cancer even in very young patient with normal ovary, biopsy of ovary should be considered for the diagnosis of Krukenberg tumor.

Abstract
Nongestational choriocarcinoma is very rare and carries a poor prognosis in female patients. In this report, the authors present a case of nongestational choriocarcinoma with brain metastasis in a female. A 58-year-old female with intermittent back pain was referred to a private hospital. On examination, a mediastinal tumor and a pancreatic tumor were detected. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of the tumor was performed for histological evaluation. Pathological diagnosis was difficult because only a small amount of tissue was collected. Head MRI showed multiple metastatic tumors in the brain. The patient was diagnosed with primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma with brain metastasis. She was treated with one course of an etoposide, methotrexate, dactinomycin, cyclophosphamide, and vincristine regimen, but her general condition gradually deteriorated, and she died on day 41. Nongestational choriocarcinoma is drug resistant, whereas gestational choriocarcinoma has better chemotherapeutic sensitivity.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary starch level and monensin on immune function. Prior to parturition, primiparous (n=21) and multiparous (n=49) Holstein cows were fed a common controlled energy close-up diet with a daily topdress of either 0 or 400 mg/d monensin. From 1 to 21 d in milk (DIM), cows were fed a high-starch (HS; 26.2% starch) or low-starch (LS; 21.5% starch) total mixed ration with a daily topdress of either 0 or 450 mg of monensin/d continuing with prepartum topdress assignment. From 22 through 63 DIM, all cows were fed HS and continued with assigned topdress treatment until 63 DIM. Endometrial cytology and whole-blood immune function were assessed at 8 DIM and on 1 d between 40 and 60 DIM. At 8 DIM, cows fed HS had an increased percentage (%) of phagocytic monocytes and tended to have a greater phagocytosis index (% of positive cells × mean fluorescence intensity) in monocytes compared with cows fed LS. At 8 DIM, cows fed HS also tended to have a higher percentage of monocytes involved in oxidative burst and a higher monocyte oxidative burst index compared with LS cows. At 8 DIM, blood polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) isolated from cows fed monensin during the periparturient period tended to have higher PMN glycogen content compared with control cows. At 40 to 60 DIM, the incidence of cytological endometritis as diagnosed by uterine cytology was not affected by dietary treatment. However, at 40 to 60 DIM, cows fed monensin had an increased percentage of Escherichia coli-stimulated PMN, tended to have a greater percentage of monocytes involved in oxidative burst, and tended to have an increased E. coli-stimulated monocyte oxidative burst index. At 40 to 60 DIM, blood PMN isolated from cows fed HS during early lactation had higher PMN glycogen content compared with cows fed LS during early lactation. Overall, results suggest that feeding higher starch diets postpartum and peripartal supplementation with monensin may have some beneficial effects on immune function, although uterine cytology was not affected by treatment.

Abstract
Human dental pulp stem/progenitor cells (hDPSCs) are attractive candidates for regenerative therapy because they can be easily expanded to generate colony-forming unit-fibroblasts (CFU-Fs) on plastic and the large cell numbers required for transplantation. However, isolation based on adherence to plastic inevitably changes the surface marker expression and biological properties of the cells. Consequently, little is currently known about the original phenotypes of tissue precursor cells that give rise to plastic-adherent CFU-Fs. To better understand the in vivo functions and translational therapeutic potential of hDPSCs and other stem cells, selective cell markers must be identified in the progenitor cells. Here, we identified a dental pulp tissue-specific cell population based on the expression profiles of 2 cell-surface markers LNGFR (CD271) and THY-1 (CD90). Prospectively isolated, dental pulp-derived LNGFR(Low+)THY-1(High+) cells represent a highly enriched population of clonogenic cells--notably, the isolated cells exhibited long-term proliferation and multilineage differentiation potential in vitro. The cells also expressed known mesenchymal cell markers and promoted new bone formation to heal critical-size calvarial defects in vivo. These findings suggest that LNGFR(Low+)THY-1(High+) dental pulp-derived cells provide an excellent source of material for bone regenerative strategies.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Host manipulation by parasites and parasitoids is a fascinating phenomenon within evolutionary ecology, representing an example of extended phenotypes. To elucidate the mechanism of host manipulation, revealing the origin and function of the invoked actions is essential. Our study focused on the ichneumonid spider ectoparasitoid Reclinervellus nielseni, which turns its host spider (Cyclosa argenteoalba) into a drugged navvy, to modify the web structure into a more persistent cocoon web so that the wasp can pupate safely on this web after the spider's death. We focused on whether the cocoon web originated from the resting web that an unparasitized spider builds before moulting, by comparing web structures, building behaviour and silk spectral/tensile properties. We found that both resting and cocoon webs have reduced numbers of radii decorated by numerous fibrous threads and specific decorating behaviour was identical, suggesting that the cocoon web in this system has roots in the innate resting web and ecdysteroid-related components may be responsible for the manipulation. We also show that these decorations reflect UV light, possibly to prevent damage by flying web-destroyers such as birds or large insects. Furthermore, the tensile test revealed that the spider is induced to repeat certain behavioural steps in addition to resting web construction so that many more threads are laid down for web reinforcement.
