Transformations of Thermosensitive Hyperbranched Poly(ionic liquid)s Monolayers

We synthesized amphiphilic hyperbranched poly(ionic liquid)s (HBPILs) with asymmetrical peripheral composition consisting of hydrophobic n-octadecylurethane arms and hydrophilic, ionically linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) macrocations and studied low critical solution temperature (LCST)-induced reorganizations at the air-water interface. We observed that the morphology of HBPIL Langmuir monolayers is controlled by the surface pressure with uniform well-defined disk-like domains formed in a liquid phase. These domains are merged and transformed to uniform monolayers with elevated ridge-like network structures representing coalesced interdomain boundaries in a solid phase because the branched architecture and asymmetrical chemical composition stabilize the disk-like morphology under high compression. Above LCST, elevated individual islands are formed because of the aggregation of the collapsed hydrophobized PNIPAM terminal macrocations in a solid phase. The presence of thermoresponsive PNIPAM macrocations initiates monolayer reorganization at LCST with transformation of surface mechanical contrast distribution. The heterogeneity of elastic response and adhesion distributions for HBPIL monolayers in the wet state changed from highly contrasted two-phase distribution below LCST to near-uniform mechanical response above LCST because of the hydrophilic to hydrophobic transformation of the PNIPAM phase.

Morphology and Surface Properties of Roach Water Transport Arrays

We report on morphological studies of wharf roaches, Ligia exotica, which can passively absorb and transport water through the microscopic protrusions on their legs. We systematically investigated the geometrical variables of the protrusions on each podite of legs to reveal a particularized structural complexity. For the morphological analysis, each podite was split into nine different zones by grouping the protrusions with similar shapes and organization. The protrusions are shown to possess three different types of shapes located on each specific zone of the podite. In addition, the nanoscale surface morphologies of the protrusions on the wharf roach legs were probed by using atomic force microscopy, and the surface properties of the hairy arrays were determined for identifying the localized hydrophobicity distribution. The protrusion surface possessed a nanoscale periodic patterned texture, and both the valley and ridges of a periodic pattern on the protrusion surface exhibited an identical low surface energy. We suggest that the structural morphologies and distinct hydrophobicity of the protrusions can be critical in determining the directional wettability of an entire leg and important for designing a sturdy water transport and passive water-absorbing system without external energy consumption.

Robust Chiral Organization of Cellulose Nanocrystals in Capillary Confinement

We showed large area uniformly aligned chiral photonic bioderived films from a liquid crystal phase formed by a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspension placed in a thin capillary. As a result of the spatial confinement of the drying process, the interface between coexisting isotropic and chiral phases aligns perpendicular to the long axis of the capillary. This orientation facilitates a fast homogeneous growth of chiral pseudolayers parallel to the interface. Overall, the formation of organized solids takes hours vs weeks in contrast to the slow and heterogeneous process of drying from the traditional dish-cast approach. The saturation of water vapor in one end of the capillary causes anisotropic drying and promotes unidirectional propagation of the anisotropic phase in large regions that results in chiral CNC solid films with a uniformly oriented layered morphology. Corresponding ordering processes were monitored in situ at a nanoscale, mesoscale, and microscopic scale with complementary scattering and microscopic techniques. The resulting films show high orientation order at a multilength scale over large regions and preserved chiral handedness causing a narrower optical reflectance band and uniform birefringence over macroscopic regions in contrast to traditional dish-cast CNC films and those assembled in a magnetic field and on porous substrates. These thin films with a controllable and well-identified uniform morphology, structural colors, and handedness open up interesting possibilities for broad applications in bioderived photonic nanomaterials.

Tunable Interfacial Properties in Silk Ionomer Microcapsules with Tailored Multilayer Interactions

Microencapsulation techniques represent a critical step in realizing highly controlled transport of functional materials in multiphase systems. The first demonstration of microcapsules prepared from minimally grafted silk ionomers (silk fibroin modified with cationic/anionic charge groups) are presented here. These tailored biomacromolecules have shown significantly increased biocompatibility over traditional polyelectrolytes and heavily grafted silk ionomers, but the low grafting density had previously limited attempts to fabricate stable microcapsules. In addition, the first microcapsules from polyethylene-glycol-grafted silk ionomers are fabricated and the corresponding impact on microcapsule behavior is demonstrated. The materials are shown to exhibit pH-responsive properties, with the microcapsules demonstrating an approx. tenfold decrease in stiffness and an approx. threefold change in diffusion coefficient when moving from acidic to basic buffer. Finally, the effect of assembly conditions of the microcapsules are shown to play a large role in determining final properties, with microcapsules prepared in acidic buffers showing lower roughness, stiffness, and an inversion in transport behavior (i.e., permeability decreases at higher pH).

Template-Guided Assembly of Silk Fibroin on Cellulose Nanofibers for Robust Nanostructures with Ultrafast Water Transport

The construction of multilength scaled hierarchical nanostructures from diverse natural components is critical in the progress toward all-natural nanocomposites with structural robustness and versatile added functionalities. Here, we report a spontaneous formation of peculiar "shish kebab" nanostructures with the periodic arrangement of silk fibroin domains along straight segments of cellulose nanofibers. We suggest that the formation of these shish kebab nanostructures is facilitated by the preferential organization of heterogeneous (β-sheets and amorphous silk) domains along the cellulose nanofiber driven by modulated axial distribution of crystalline planes, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions as suggested by all-atom molecular dynamic simulations. Such shish kebab nanostructures enable the ultrathin membrane to possess open, transparent, mechanically robust interlocked networks with high mechanical performance with up to 30 GPa in stiffness and 260 MPa in strength. These nanoporous robust membranes allow for the extremely high water flux, up to 3.5 × 10⁴ L h^-1 m^-2 bar^-1 combined with high rejection rate for various organic molecules, capability of capturing heavy metal ions and their further reduction into metal nanoparticles for added SERS detection capability and catalytic functionalities.

Impact of C 60 fullerene on the dynamics of force-speed changes in soleus muscle of rat at ischemia-reperfusion injury

The effect of C60 fullerene nanoparticles (30-90 nm) on dynamics of force response development to stimulated soleus muscle of rat with ischemic pathology, existing in muscle during the first 5 hours and first 5 days after 2 hours of ischemia and further reperfusion, was investigated using the tensometric method. It was found that intravenous and intramuscular administration of C60 fullerene with a single dose of 1 mg/kg exert different therapeutic effects dependent on the investigated macroparameters of muscle contraction. The intravenous drug administration was shown to be the most optimal for correction of the velocity macroparameters of contraction due to muscle tissue ischemic damage. In contrast, the intramuscular administration displays protective action with respect to motions associated with generation of maximal force response or continuous contractions elevating the level of muscle fatigue. Hence, C60 fullerene, being a strong antioxidant, may be considered as a promising agent for effective therapy of pathological states of the muscle system caused by pathological action of free radical processes.
