Vertical-Channel Cathode Host Enables Rapid Deposition Kinetics toward High-Areal-Capacity Sodium-Chlorine Batteries

Rechargeable sodium chloride (Na-Cl2) batteries have emerged as promising alternatives for next-generation energy storage due to their superior energy density and sodium abundance. However, their practical applications are hindered by the sluggish chlorine cathode kinetics related to the aggregation of NaCl and its difficult transformation into Cl2. Herein, the study, for the first time from the perspective of electrode level in Na-Cl2 batteries, proposes a free-standing carbon cathode host with customized vertical channels to facilitate the SOCl2 transport and regulate the NaCl deposition. Accordingly, electrode kinetics are significantly enhanced, and the deposited NaCl is distributed evenly across the whole electrode, avoiding the blockage of pores in the carbon host, and facilitating its oxidation to Cl2. With this low-polarization cathode, the Na-Cl2 batteries can deliver a practically high areal capacity approaching 4 mAh cm-2 and a long cycle life of over 170 cycles. This work demonstrates the significance of pore engineering in electrodes for mediating chlorine conversion kinetics in rechargeable alkali-metal-Cl2 batteries.

Elaborating the Crystal Water of Prussian Blue for Outstanding Performance of Sodium Ion Batteries

Prussian blue (PB) is one of the main cathode materials with industrial prospects for the sodium ion battery. The structural stability of PB materials is directly associated with the presence of crystal water within the open 3D framework. However, there remains a lack of consensus regarding whether all forms of crystal water have detrimental effects on the structural stability of the PB materials. Currently, it is widely accepted that interstitial water is the stability troublemaker, whereas the role of coordination water remains elusive. In this work, the dynamic evolution of PB structures is investigated during the crystal water (in all forms) removal process through a variety of online monitoring techniques. It can be inferred that the PB-130 °C retains trace coordination water (1.3%) and original structural integrity, whereas PB-180 °C eliminates almost all of crystal water (∼12.1%, including both interstitial and coordinated water), but inevitably suffers from structural collapse. This is mainly because the coordinated water within the PB material plays a crucial role in maintaining structural stability via forming the -N≡C-FeLS-C≡N- conjugate bridge. Consequently, PB-130 °C with trace coordination water delivers superior reversible capacity (113.6 mAh g-1), high rate capability (charge to >80% capacity in 3 min), and long cycling stability (only 0.012% fading per cycle), demonstrating its promising prospect in practical applications.

A detailed multi-omics analysis of GNB2 gene in human cancers

Abstract The Guanine-nucleotide binding protein 2 (GNB2) encodes for β2 subunit (Gβ2) of the G-protein complex. Keeping in view the increased demand of reliable biomarkers in cancer, the current study was planned to extensively explored GNB2 expression variation and its roles in different cancers using online available databases and diverse methodology. In view of our results, the GNB2 was notably up-regulated relative to corresponding controls in twenty three cancer types. As well, the elevated expression of GNB2 was found to be associated with the reduced overall survival (OS) of the Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma (LIHC) and Rectum Adenocarcinoma (READ) only out of all analyzed cancer types. This implies GNB2 plays vital role in the tumorigenesis of LIHC and READ. Several additional analysis also explored six critical pathways and few important correlations related to GNB2 expression and different other parameters such as promoter methylation, tumor purity, CD8+ T immune cells infiltration, and genetic alteration, and chemotherapeutic drugs. In conclusion, GNB2 gene has been identified in this study as a shared potential biomarker (diagnostic and prognostic) of LIHC and READ.

Soil calcium prompts organic carbon accumulation after decadal saline-water irrigation in the Taklamakan desert

Soil organic carbon (SOC), as a crucial measure of soil quality, is typically low in arid regions due to salinization, which is a global issue. How soil organic carbon changes with salinization is not a simple concept, as high salinity simultaneously affects plant inputs and microbial decomposition, which exert opposite effects on SOC accumulation. Meanwhile, salinization could affect SOC by altering soil Ca2+ (a salt component), which stabilizes organic matter via cation bridging, but this process is often overlooked. Here, we aimed to explore i) how soil organic carbon changes with salinization induced by saline-water irrigation and ii) which process drives soil organic carbon content with salinization, plant inputs, microbial decomposition, or soil Ca2+ level. To this end, we assessed SOC content, plant inputs represented by aboveground biomass, microbial decomposition revealed by extracellular enzyme activity, and soil Ca2+ along a salinity gradient (0.60-31.09 g kg-1) in the Taklamakan Desert. We found that, in contrast to our prediction, SOC in the topsoil (0-20 cm) increased with soil salinity, but it did not change with the aboveground biomass of the dominant species (Haloxylon ammodendron) or the activity of three carbon-cycling relevant enzymes (β-glucosidase, cellulosidase, and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase) along the salinity gradient. Instead, SOC changed positively with soil exchangeable Ca2+, which increased linearly with salinity. These results suggest that soil organic carbon accumulation could be driven by increases in soil exchangeable Ca2+ under salinization in salt-adapted ecosystems. Our study provides empirical evidence for the beneficial impact of soil Ca2+ on organic carbon accumulation in the field under salinization, which is apparent and should not be disregarded. In addition, the management of soil carbon sequestration in salt-affected areas should be taken into account by adjusting the soil exchangeable Ca2+ level.

Embedding oxophilic rare-earth single atom in platinum nanoclusters for efficient hydrogen electro-oxidation

Designing Pt-based electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and CO tolerance is challenging but extremely desirable for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction. Herein we report the design of a series of single-atom lanthanide (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Lu)-embedded ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters for efficient alkaline hydrogen electro-oxidation catalysis based on vapor filling and spatially confined reduction/growth of metal species. Mechanism studies reveal that oxophilic single-atom lanthanide species in Pt nanoclusters can serve as the Lewis acid site for selective OH^- adsorption and regulate the binding strength of intermediates on Pt sites, which promotes the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation and CO oxidation by accelerating the combination of OH^- and *H/*CO in kinetics and thermodynamics, endowing the electrocatalyst with up to 14.3-times higher mass activity than commercial Pt/C and enhanced CO tolerance. This work may shed light on the design of metal nanocluster-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Change rates of soil inorganic carbon vary with depth and duration after land conversion across drylands in North China

Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) accounts for 30-70% of the total soil C in global drylands. Despite the slow turnover rate, recent studies indicate that SIC could be altered by land-use change as soil organic C (SOC). Neglecting SIC change could contribute greatly to the uncertainty of soil C dynamics in drylands. However, due to the spatial-temporal variation in SIC, the direction and magnitude of SIC change (rate) induced by land-use change at a large spatial scale is understudied and poorly understood. Here, we used the space-for-time approach to test how the SIC change varied with the duration and type of land-use change and soil depth across China's drylands. We assessed the temporal and spatial variations in the SIC change rate and explored the influencing factors based on a regional dataset comprising 424 pairs of data across North China. We found that the SIC change rate of 0-200 cm after land-use change was 12.80 (5.47‒20.03) g C m^-2 yr^-1 (mean with 95% confidence interval), which was comparable to the SOC change rate (14.72, (5.27-24.15 g C m^-2 yr^-1)). Increased SIC occurred only in deep soils (>30 cm) and in the conversion from deserts to croplands or woodlands. In addition, the SIC change rate decreased with the duration of land-use change, implying that quantifying the temporal pattern of SIC change is necessary to accurately estimate SIC dynamics. The SIC change was strongly related to changes in soil water content. The SIC change rate was weakly and negatively correlated with the SOC change rate, and this relationship varied with soil depth. Together, this study highlights that to improve the prediction of soil C dynamics following land-use change in drylands, we should quantify the temporal and vertical patterns of both soil inorganic and organic C changes in the region.

Clinical outcomes of intra-arterial chemotherapy combined with iodine-125 seed brachytherapy in the treatment of malignant superior vena cava syndrome caused by small cell lung cancer

PURPOSE

Currently there is a lack of effective treatment strategies for malignant superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS). We aim to investigate the therapeutic effect of intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) combined with the Single Needle Cone Puncture method for the ¹²⁵I brachytherapy (SNCP-¹²⁵I) in treating SVCS caused by stage III/IV Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty-two patients with SCLC who developed SVCS from January 2014 to October 2020 were investigated in this study. Out of these 62 patients, 32 underwent IAC combined with SNCP-¹²⁵I (Group A) and 30 patients received IAC treatment only (Group B). Clinical symptom remission, response rate, disease control rate, and overall survival of these two groups of patients were analyzed and compared.

RESULTS

The remission rate of symptoms including dyspnea, edema, dysphagia, pectoralgia, and cough of malignant SVCS in Group A was significantly higher than that in Group B (70.5 and 50.53%, P=0.0004, respectively). The disease control rates (DCR, PR+CR+SD) of Group A and B were 87.5 and 66.7%, respectively (P=0.049). Response rates (RR, PR+CR) of Group A and Group B were 71.9 and 40% (P=0.011). The median overall survival (OS) of Group A was significantly longer than that in Group B which was 18 months compared to 11.75 months (P=0.0360).

CONCLUSIONS

IAC treatment effectively treated malignant SVCS in advanced SCLC patients. IAC combined with SNCP-¹²⁵I in the treatment of malignant SVCS caused by SCLC showed improved clinical outcomes including symptom remission and local tumor control rates than IAC treatment only in treating SCLC-induced malignant SVCS.

The impact of social media influencers' bragging language styles on consumers' attitudes toward luxury brands: The dual mediation of envy and trustworthiness

On social media, luxury brand managers often use influencers' bragging language as a marketing tool. As modesty is considered a virtue in the Chinese context, Chinese influencers tend to adopt a humblebragging language style. Research has examined the impact of bragging language styles on luxury brands and has found that humblebragging, which appears to be modest, has a negative influence on brand attitudes. From the perspective of social comparison theory, we proposed a dual mediation model of malicious envy and trustworthiness to reveal the internal mechanisms and moderating factors of the negative effects of humblebragging. The results of three experiments indicated that compared with straightforward bragging, humblebragging was more likely to elicit malicious envy and lower levels of trust in an influencer, resulting in negative attitudes toward the luxury brand endorsed. Moreover, this negative effect was stronger when the influencer lacked expertise or had high similarity with consumers. Our findings enrich the antecedents of social media influencer marketing and provide managers with implications for maximizing the effectiveness of influencer marketing by matching influencers with word-of-mouth content.

Microdermabrasion facilitates direct current stimulation by lowering skin resistance

Background

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is reported to induce irritating skin sensations and occasional skin injuries, which limits the applied tDCS dose. Additionally, tDCS hardware safety profile prevents high current delivery when skin resistance is high.

Objective

To test if decreasing skin resistance can enable high-dose tDCS delivery without increasing tDCS-related skin sensations or device hardware limits.

Methods

We compared the effect of microdermabrasion and sonication on 2 mA direct current stimulation (DCS) through forearm skin for 2-3 min on 20 subjects. We also surveyed the subjects using a questionnaire throughout the procedure. We used a linear mixed-effects model for repeated-measures and multiple logistic regression, with adjustments for age, race, gender and visit.

Results

Microdermabrasion, with/out sonication, led to significant decrease in skin resistance (1.6 ± 0.1 kΩ or ∼32% decrease, p < 0.0001). The decrease with sonication alone (0.4 ± 0.1 kΩ or ∼7% decrease, p = 0.0016) was comparable to that of sham (0.3 ± 0.1 kΩ or ∼5% decrease, p = 0.0414). There was no increase in the skin-electrode interface temperature. The perceived DCS-related sensations did not differ across skin preparation procedures (p > 0.16), but microdermabrasion (when not combined with sonication) led to increased perceived sensation (p < 0.01).

Conclusions

Microdermabrasion (with/out sonication) resulted in reduced skin resistance without increase in perceived skin sensations with DCS. Higher current can be delivered with microdermabrasion-pre-treated skin without changing the device hardware while reducing, otherwise higher voltage required to deliver the same amount of current.

[Analysis of clinical features and poor prognostic factors of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in children]

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics, pathogenic bacteria, complications and risk factors of prognosis of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in children. Methods: The clinical manifestations, laboratorg tests, etiological charateristics and clinical data of 107 patients with acute hematogenous osteomyelitis admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital from January 2017 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the drug sensitivity results of Staphylococcus aureus, the group was divided into methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) group; according to the presence or absence of complications, the group was divided into the group with and without complications; according to the prognosis of the follow-up children, the group was divided into good prognosis and poor prognosis. The χ² test or Mann-Whitney U test used for comparison between groups, and Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors for complications and prognosis. Results: Of the 107 patients, 62 were males and 45 were females. The age of presentation was 5.6 (1.7, 10.0) years, including 5 patients (4.7%) age from >28 days to 3 months, 46 patients (43.0%) age from >3 months to 5 years, 43 patients (40.2%)>5-12 years of age, and 13 patients (12.1%)>12-18 years of age. The first symptoms were acute fever in 35 patients (32.7%), limb pain in 24 patients (22.4%), and fever with limb pain in 23 patients (21.5%). Pathogen culture was positive in 75 patients (70.1%), Streptococcus pyogenes, Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli in 1 case (1.4%) each, and Staphylococcus aureus in 72 cases (96.0%), among them, 47 cases were MSSA, 22 cases were MRSA, and 3 cases had positive reports of Staphylococcus aureus from other hospitals without drug-sensitive tests. The proportion of infected children living in rural areas and receiving surgical treatment was higher in the MRSA group than in the MSSA group (14 cases (63.6%) vs. 18 cases (38.3%) and 21 cases (95.5%) vs. 33 cases (70.2%), χ²=3.87, 4.23, both P<0.05). Sixty-five children had no complications while 42 children (39.3%) suffered from complications. Common complications consisted of 19 cases (17.8%) of sepsis, 17 cases (15.9%) of septic arthritis, and 12 cases (11.2%) of venous thrombosis. The group with complications showed higher mental changes, decreased appetite and (or) weakness, positive pathogenic cultures, and time from admission to surgery than the group without complications (18 cases (42.9%) vs. 9 cases (13.8%), 20 cases (47.6%) vs. 12 cases (18.5%), 34 cases (81.0%) vs. 41 cases (63.1%), 3.5 (2.0, 6.0) vs. 2.0 (1.0, 4.0) d,χ²=11.38, 10.35, 3.89, Z=2.21, all P<0.05). The poor prognosis group had more comorbidities, combined local complications, and positive aureus than the good prognosis group (10/15 vs. 34.9% (30/86), 7/15 vs. 17.4% (15/86), 14/15 vs. 61.6% (53/86), χ²=5.39, 6.40, 4.42, all P<0.05). Multifactorial Logistic regression analysis showed that acute phase C-reactive protein (CRP) was both an independent risk factor for complications (OR=1.01, 95%CI 1.01-1.02) and an independent risk factor for poor prognosis (OR=1.01, 95%CI 1.00-1.02). Conclusions: The first symptoms of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis are acute fever, limb pain, and fever with limb pain are most common. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common pathogenic organism. Those with loss of appetite and (or) weakness, mental changes, positive pathogenic cultures, and longer time between admission and surgery are prone to complications. Those with complications, combined local complications, and positive for Staphylococcus aureus had a poor prognosis. Elevated CRP is an independent risk factor not only for complications but for poor prognosis as well.

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon

Soil is the largest terrestrial reservoir of organic carbon and is central for climate change mitigation and carbon-climate feedbacks. Chemical and physical associations of soil carbon with minerals play a critical role in carbon storage, but the amount and global capacity for storage in this form remain unquantified. Here, we produce spatially-resolved global estimates of mineral-associated organic carbon stocks and carbon-storage capacity by analyzing 1144 globally-distributed soil profiles. We show that current stocks total 899 Pg C to a depth of 1 m in non-permafrost mineral soils. Although this constitutes 66% and 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, it is only 42% and 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Regions under agricultural management and deeper soil layers show the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Critically, the degree of undersaturation indicates sequestration efficiency over years to decades. We show that, across 103 carbon-accrual measurements spanning management interventions globally, soils furthest from their mineralogical capacity are more effective at accruing carbon; sequestration rates average 3-times higher in soils at one tenth of their capacity compared to soils at one half of their capacity. Our findings provide insights into the world’s soils, their capacity to store carbon, and priority regions and actions for soil carbon management.

Rare Taxa Drive the Response of Soil Fungal Guilds to Soil Salinization in the Taklamakan Desert

Salinization poses great threats to soil fungal communities that would cause the losses of ecosystems services. Soil fungal communities are composed of different functional guilds such as saprotrophic, symbiotrophic, and pathotrophic fungi, and each guild includes many rare taxa and a few abundant taxa. Despite of low abundance, rare taxa may be crucial in determining the responses of entire soil fungal communities to salinization. However, it remains poorly understood how rare taxa mediate the impacts of soil salinization on soil fungal community structure. Here, we took advantage of a salinity gradient in a desert ecosystem ranging from 0.60 to 31.09 g kg^-1 that was created by a 12-year saline-water irrigation and assessed how the rare vs. abundant taxa of soil saprotrophic, symbiotrophic, and pathotrophic fungi respond to soil salinization through changes in the community biodiversity and composition. We found that the rare taxa of soil saprotrophic, symbiotrophic, and pathographic fungi were more sensitive to changes in soil salinity compared to the abundant taxa. In addition, the community composition of rare taxa of the saprotrophic and pathotrophic fungi not the symbiotrophic fungi was positively associated with soil salinity change. However, the symbiotrophic fungi showed greater variations in the species richness along the salinity gradient. These findings highlight the importance to differentiate rare taxa in predicting how the biodiversity and functional groups of soil fungal communities respond to soil salinization.

Towards improved modeling of SOC decomposition: soil water potential beyond the wilting point

Soils are important carbon (C) reservoirs and play a critical role in regulating the global C cycle. Soil water potential (SWP) measures the energy with which water is retained in the soil and is one of the most vital factors that constrain the decomposition of soil organic C (SOC). The measurements for soil water retention curve (SWRC), on which the estimation of SWP depends, are usually carried out above -1.5 MPa (i.e., the wilting point for many plants). However, the average moisture threshold at which soil microbial activity ceases is usually below -10 MPa in mineral soils. Beyond the measurement range, the SWP estimation has to be derived from extrapolating the SWRC, which violates the statistical principle, resulting in possibly inaccurate SWP estimations. To date, it is unclear to what extent the extrapolated SWP estimation deviates from the "true value" and how it impacts the modeling of SOC decomposition. This study combined SWRC measurements down to -43.7 MPa, a 72-day soil incubation experiment with four moisture levels, and an SOC decomposition model. In addition to the complete SWRC (SWRC_all ), we fitted two more SWRCs by using measurements above -0.5 MPa (SWRC_0.5 ) and -1.7 MPa (SWRC_1.7 ), respectively, to quantify the deviations of extrapolated SWPs from the complete SWRC. Results showed that extrapolating the SWRC beyond its measurement range significantly underestimated the SWP. Incorporating the extrapolated SWP in the model significantly underestimated the SOC decomposition under relatively dry conditions. With the extrapolated SWP, the model predicted no SOC decomposition in the driest treatment, while the experiment observed a significant CO₂ emission. The results emphasize that accurate SWP estimations beyond the wilting point are critically needed to improve the modeling of SOC decomposition.

Exploring optimal heart team protocol to improve decision-making stability for complex coronary artery disease: a sequential explanatory mixed method study

Background

Although heart team was recommended by guideline for decision-making in patients with complex coronary artery disease (CAD), the decision-making stability was lack of evaluation and optimal protocol remained unknown.

Purpose

We aimed to assess inter-team agreement for revascularization decision-making and related influencing factors, so as to provide recommendations for optimal protocol.

Methods

A sequential, explanatory mixed method study was conducted, including (1) a cross-sectional study retrospectively enrolling patients with complex CAD and four heart teams to assess the inter-team decision-making agreement and (2) a qualitative study that semi-structurally interviewed all heart team members to analyze the potential factors associated with decision-making discrepancy. Primary outcome was kappa value of inter-team decision-making agreement. Inductive thematic analysis was used to generate themes and subthemes attributing to decision-making discrepancy. Integrating qualitative and quantitative data, we explained how each subtheme affected decision-making agreement and provided corresponding recommendations based on these explanations. Finally, we provided a detailed heart team protocol by integrating our recommendations, published experience and guideline. Patient sample size was precalculated and interviewee sample size was identified by theoretical saturation.

Results

A total of 101 patients with complex CAD were randomly enrolled from a consecutive angiography registry. Sixteen specialists were invited and randomly established four heart teams to make decisions for enrolled patients. Inter-team decision-making agreement was moderate (kappa 0.582) (Table 1). Decision-making may be influenced at three themes (specialist quality; team composition; meeting process) and ten subthemes (decision thought; understanding of disease and evidence; understanding of other discipline; personality; learning curve; personnel quality; number of team members; discipline selection; ratio of different disciplines and meeting form). Recommendations at five levels were provided, including (1) specialist selection, (2) specialist training, (3) team composition, (4) team training and (5) meeting process. A detailed implementation protocol to establish and deploy a qualified heart team was generated.

Conclusions

Agreement between heart teams for revascularization decision-making in patients with complex CAD was moderate. Five recommendations to improve heart team modality were provided based on factors associated with decision-making discrepancy. A detailed heart team implementation protocol came into being. Randomized controlled trial was warranted to further confirm the protocol.

Improved robot-assisted laparoscopic telesurgery: feasibility of network converged communication

The converged transmission-assisted network communication architecture used in this study could meet the requirements of telesurgery, and effectively guarantee the security and immediacy of communication. With the security, flexibility, and universality of the network converged transmission, the clinical practical application of telesurgery and telemedicine would step up to a higher level.

The Interaction of Facial Expression and Donor-Recipient Eye Contact in Donation Intentions: Based on the Intensity of Emotion

Both happy and sad facial expressions of recipients are frequently used in charity advertisements. However, the relative effectiveness of these two types of facial expressions has been found paradoxical in the past. In this study, we examine when happy facial expression can more effectively increase donation intentions of consumers and when vice versa. Specially, we propose that eye contact between a donor and a potential recipient may moderate the relative effectiveness of happy and sad facial expressions, and further explain the interaction effect from the perspective of emotional intensity. Results from two experiments suggest that, when donor-recipient eye contact is present, consumers tend to have stronger emotional intensity, and, in turn, show higher donation intentions when the recipient is with a happy rather than sad facial expression. In contrast, when the eye contact is absent, consumers may show stronger emotional intensity and donation intentions toward the charity advertisement with a recipient showing sad rather than happy expression.

Divergent vertical distributions of microbial biomass with soil depth among groups and land uses

Soil microbial biomass is key to improving the prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics by modeling. However, the driving mechanism of microbial biomass of different groups with soil depth is poorly understood across sites. Here, we compiled the biomass of different microbial groups (i.e., fungi, bacteria, gram-positive bacteria G⁺, and gram-negative bacteria G^-) from the surface to a soil depth of 1 m from 71 soil profiles across three continents. We found that the biomass of microbial groups all decreased with soil depth but at different magnitudes, while the relative abundance of microbial groups, except G^-, was relatively stable along soil profiles. Soil fungal biomass had a shallower vertical distribution than bacteria, especially G⁺, with 89% fungi and 76% G⁺ in the top 10 cm soils. In addition, a greater proportion of microbial biomass (71-89%) compared to SOC (64%) was in the top 10 cm soils, suggesting that microbes and SOC exhibited different vertical distributions. The vertical distributions of microbial biomass of different groups were significantly correlated with SOC and clay content but not with climate, and these distributions were different among land uses, highlighting the great influences of edaphic factors on vertical distributions of microbial biomass. The relationship between microbial biomass and soil depth provides a feasible way to estimate microbial biomass at different soil depths, which can serve as a benchmark to improve the prediction of SOC dynamics of entire soil profile at large scales.

Application of flue gas desulfurization gypsum improves multiple functions of saline-sodic soils across China

Saline-sodic soils cover ∼10% of the global land surface and deliver various ecosystem services to human society in the arid/semiarid regions. Flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG), a byproduct from coal-fired power plants, is widely used to ameliorate saline-sodic soils. Here, we aimed to quantify the impacts of FGDG application on multiple soil functions across climatic conditions, management practices, and soil types, and to explore how FGDG application affects plant productivity. We conducted a meta-analysis by compiling 2658 pairs of data points with and without FGDG application from 59 locations across China. We found that FGDG application significantly increased crop yield by 91.2% ± 22.5% (mean ± 95% CI) regardless of local climate and soil type, and improved soil quality by reducing soil exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) by 37.4% ± 9.6% and pH by 8.1% ± 1.7%. Increases in soil productivity were strongly correlated with decreases in soil ESP and pH, suggesting that increases in soil productivity were due to alleviated stress for plant growth. Meanwhile, some heavy elements (e.g., Hg and Ni) increased after FGDG application, likely imposing threats to soil health. Overall, the FGDG application is effective in improving the quality and productivity of saline-sodic soils across China. Our findings suggest that simultaneous assessment of changes in soil water (e.g., water holding capacity and infiltration), nutrient transformation, soil organic matter dynamics, and microbial communities helps disentangle mechanisms that are responsible for optimizing ecosystem service provided by saline-sodic soils after FGDG amendment application.

[Comparison on short-term safety outcomes between off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting by experienced surgeons: a single center study with 31 075 cases]

Objective: To compare the short-term outcomes between off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) by experienced surgeons with similar surgical team in a single large-volume cardiac surgery center. Methods: A total of 31 075 patients with multivessel coronary disease who underwent isolated off-pump or on-pump CABG between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2019 by experienced surgeons in Fuwai hospital were enrolled in this retrospective study. Patients was divided into on-pump CABG group and on-pump CABG group on an intention-to treat basis. Short term safety endpoints, including 30 days mortality, composite endpoint of major morbidity or mortality, prolonged postoperative length of stay (PLOS), and prolonged ICU length of stay (PICULOS), and distal anastomosis were compared between the two groups. Mortality was evaluated on 30 days post operation, other endpoints were collected before discharge. After 1∶1 propensity-score matching of baseline characteristics for on-pump and off-pump CABG, postoperative endpoints were compared with use of McNemar's test and further adjusted with the use of a logistic regression model. Results: After propensity-score matching, 10 243 matched pairs of patients were included in the final analysis, there were 4 605(22.5%) females and mean age was (60.7±8.6) years. The standardized differences were less than 5% for all baseline variables in matched cohort. Univariate analysis indicated lower risk of 30 days mortality (0.2% vs. 0.7%, P<0.001), major morbidity or mortality (5.7% vs. 8.8%, P<0.001), PLOS (3.2% vs. 4.9%, P<0.001), PICULOS (9.4% vs. 12.2, P<0.001), and lower number of distal anastomosis ((3.3±0.8) vs. (3.6±0.8), P<0.001) in off-pump CABG group than in on-pump CABG group. After adjustment of cofounders, multivariate analysis showed that off-pump CABG was still associated with a lower risk of 30 days mortality (OR=0.29, 95%CI: 0.09-0.87, P=0.027), composite endpoint of major morbidity or mortality (OR=0.60, 95%CI: 0.53-0.68, P<0.001), PLOS (OR=0.64, 95%CI 0.54-0.75, P<0.001), PICULOS (OR=0.76, 95%CI: 0.69-0.84, P<0.001). Conclusions: Off-pump CABG is related with superior short-term safety outcomes than on-pump CABG by experienced surgeons in our center.

Fe nanopowder-assisted fabrication of FeOx/porous carbon for boosting potassium-ion storage performance

The electrode materials of potassium ion storage system have attracted considerable attention given the promising prospect of a potassium ion system in large-scale electrochemical energy storage applications. Despite the excellent anode performance of metal oxides in Li⁺ and Na⁺ batteries, the study on their K⁺ storage performance is still rarely reported. In this study, we report a safe and low-cost strategy to prepare FeO_x/N-doped carbons by using NaHCO₃ and Fe nanopowder. Benefiting from the oxidation of Fe to Fe₃O₄, an interesting "one stone, two birds" role of the Fe powder can be identified in the heating process. As a reduction agent, the Fe powder can consume the excess oxygen in the bio-massed carbon framework, facilitating the formation of short-range-ordered domains in the biomass-derived carbon materials (FeO_x@GBHCs). Moreover, the close combination of oxidization products (Fe₃O₄ particles) and carbon matrix leads to numerous FeO_x clusters grafted on the surface of the carbon framework via the strong C-O-Fe binding. Therefore, the resultant FeO_x/porous carbon exhibits a high reversible capacity of 410 mA h g^-1 and an excellent cycling capability. The assembled FeO_x@GBHCs//AC potassium-ion hybrid supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 133 W h kg^-1 at a power density of 700 W kg^-1, demonstrating a potential prospect of metal oxides in boosting the potassium ion storage performance.

Ticagrelor monotherapy vs clopidogrel monotherapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention

Background

P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy with either clopidogrel or ticagrelor becomes an alternative antiplatelet strategy in patients (pts) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of clopidogrel vs. ticagrelor monotherapy in pts with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing PCI who cannot tolerate aspirin.

Methods and results

From January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2018, a total of 610 ACS pts (mean age 70.4±13.1 years, 72.1% men, 28.5% STEMI) that aspirin was stopped prematurely for various reasons and received either clopidogrel (n=369) or ticagrelor (n=241) monotherapy were included from 8 major hospitals in Taiwan. The duration (median and the 25th and 75th percentile) of aspirin treatment was 9 (1.39–37.00) days in the clopidogrel group and 10 (1.00–55.00) days in the ticagrelor group (p=0.514). Gastrointestinal bleeding (36.9%) was the most common reason to stop aspirin in both groups. The primary endpoint is the composite of all-cause mortality, recurrent ACS or unplanned revascularization, and stroke within 12 months after discharge. The safety endpoint was the major bleeding defined as BARC 3 or 5 bleedings. The covariates were balanced between groups after using inverse probability of treatment weighting. Overall, 84 patients developed events of primary endpoint, with 57 (15.4%) in the clopidogrel group and 27 (11.2%) in the ticagrelor group. After multivariate adjustment in the Cox proportional-hazards models, ticagrelor was associated with a lower risk of primary endpoint compared with clopidogrel (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.67, 95% CI 0.49–0.93). Among the primary endpoint, ticagrelor significantly reduced the risk of recurrent ACS or unplanned revascularization (aHR 0.46, 95% CI 0.28–0.75). There was no significant difference of all-cause mortality between the 2 groups (aHR 0.92, 95% CI 0.52–1.61). The risk of BARC 3 or 5 bleeding was also similar (aHR 0.71, 95% CI 0.35–1.45).

Conclusions

Among ACS patients undergoing PCI who cannot tolerate aspirin, ticagrelor monotherapy was associated with a significantly lower risk of a composite of cardiovascular events compared to clopidogrel monotherapy. The major bleeding risk was similar between groups.

Vertical distributions of soil microbial biomass carbon: a global dataset

Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) is important in regulating soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics along soil profiles by mediating the decomposition and formation of SOC. The dataset (VDMBC) is about the vertical distributions of SOC, SMBC, and soil microbial quotient (SMQ = SMBC/SOC) and their relations to environmental factors across five continents. Data were collected from literature, with a total of 289 soil profiles and 1040 observations in different soil layers compiled. The associated environment data collectd include climate, ecosystem types, and edaphic factors. We developed this dataset by searching the Web of Sciene and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure from the year of 1970 to 2019. All the data in this dataset met two creteria: 1) there were at least three mineral soil layers along a soil profile, and 2) SMBC was measured using the fumigation extraction method. The data in tables and texts were obtained from literature directly, and the data in figures were extracted by using the GetData Graph digitizer software version 2.25. When climate and soil properties were not available from publications, we obtainted the data from the World Weather Information Service (https://worldweather.wmo.int/en/home.html) and SoilGrids at a spatial resolution of 250 meters (version 0.5.3, https://soilgrids.org).

The units of all the variables were converted to the standard international units or commonly used ones and the values were transformed correspondingly. For example, the value of soil organic matter (SOM) was converted to SOC by using the equation (SOC = SOM × 0.58).

This dataset can be used in predicting global SOC changes along soil profiles by using the multi-layer soil carbon models. It can also be used to analyse how soil microbial biomass changes with plant roots as well as the composition, structure, and functions of soil microbial communities along soil profiles at large spatial scales. This dataset offers opportunities to improve our prediction of SOC dynamics under global changes and to advance our understanding of the environmental controls.

Associations between circulating bone-derived hormones lipocalin 2, osteocalcin, and glucose metabolism in acromegaly

PURPOSE

The aim was to examine changes in the bone-derived hormone lipocalin 2 (LCN2) levels in patients with active acromegaly and to investigate the potential roles of LCN2 and osteocalcin in glucose metabolism.

METHODS

We recruited 50 consecutive acromegalic patients. Of those, 39 patients with complete postoperative follow-up data were included. Thirty sex-, age-, and BMI-matched healthy individuals were recruited as normal controls. The pre- and postoperative serum LCN2 and osteocalcin levels were compared. The homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index and secretion [β-cell function (HOMA-β)] were calculated.

RESULTS

Compared with controls, acromegalic subjects had lower LCN2 levels (34.15 ± 9.95 vs 57.50 ± 29.75 ng/mL, P < 0.01) and higher osteocalcin levels (55.45 ± 34.02 vs 19.46 ± 6.69 ng/mL, P < 0.01). Acromegalic patients also had elevated HOMA-IR levels, and the HOMA-β and the area under the curve for insulin (AUC INS) levels were slightly but nonsignificantly increased. The serum levels of LCN2 significantly increased after surgery (37.03 ± 9.73 vs 45.15 ± 15.33 ng/mL, P < 0.05), and those of osteocalcin significantly decreased [43.51 (26.73-65.66) vs 24.79 (18.39-32.59) ng/mL, P < 0.01]. Total lean mass was the only positive predictor of LCN2, and elevated serum IGF-I was a positive predictor of osteocalcin. Low LCN2 and elevated serum osteocalcin levels were predictors of the AUC INS, and osteocalcin was a positive predictor of HOMA-β.

CONCLUSION

The bone-derived hormones, osteocalcin and LCN2 changed significantly in active acromegaly, were altered after treatment and served as predictors of β-cell function in acromegaly. This study shows that the bone could be involved in regulating glucose metabolism in acromegaly.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with elevated urinary pyrrole markers of γ-diketones known to cause axonal neuropathy

INTRODUCTION

Progressive distal symmetrical axonal neuropathy, a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), has an unknown cause. Normal physiological metabolism and diabetic dysmetabolism are associated with the generation of γ-diketones. γ-Diketones form pyrroles with protein amines, notably with axonal proteins required for the maintenance of nerve fiber integrity, especially elongate, large-diameter peripheral nerve fibers innervating the extremities. We tested the hypothesis that neuropathy-associated γ-diketone pyrroles are elevated in DM.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

We measured the urinary concentration of γ-diketone pyrroles in age-matched and gender-matched elderly (60-84 years) persons with (n=267) or without (n=267) indicators of DM based in a community population (9411 community older adults aged ≥60 years) in Shenzhen city, Guangdong, China. We used statistical methods, including a generalized linear model, multivariate logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic splines, to assess linear and nonlinear relationships between urinary γ-diketone pyrroles and indicators of DM.

RESULTS

Compared with healthy controls, those with DM had significantly higher levels of fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c, urinary ketone bodies and urinary γ-diketone pyrroles. The median concentration of urinary γ-diketone pyrrole adducts was significantly higher (p<0.0001) in individuals with DM (7.5 (5.4) μM) compared with healthy controls (5.9 (4.3) μM). Both linear and non-linear relations were found between urinary γ-diketone pyrroles and indicators of DM.

CONCLUSIONS

Diabetic dysmetabolism includes increased generation and excretion of neuropathy-associated γ-diketone pyrroles. These findings form the foundation for studies to test whether γ-diketone pyrrole concentration correlates with quantitative sensory (vibration and temperature) and electrodiagnostic testing.

Template-assisted loading of Fe3O4 nanoparticles inside hollow carbon "rooms" to achieve high volumetric lithium storage

The design of electrodes with simultaneously high compaction density, developed porosity, and structural stability has always been a challenge so as to meet the demand of high volumetric performance lithium ion storage devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a new compositing method for hollow carbon "room" loading of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (HCR@Fe₃O₄) with the assistance of Na₂CO₃ salt crystal templates. The as-obtained HCR@Fe₃O₄ composites have a massive compaction density (1.79 g cm^-3), abundant multimodal pores (1.26 cm³ g^-1), and a large content of Fe₃O₄ (64.2 wt%), which leads to excellent volumetric capacitive performance. More importantly, the unique compositing model not only provides a fast transmission channel for Li⁺ but also alleviates the mechanical strain efficiently through the cavity between the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and the carbon wall. When evaluated as an anode of lithium ion batteries, the resultant HCR@Fe₃O₄ electrode exhibits a remarkable volumetric capacity of 2044 mA h cm^-3 at 0.2 A g^-1 and a stable cycle life of 828 mA h cm^-3 after 1000 cycles at 5 A g^-1. The assembled HCR@Fe₃O₄//AC lithium ion hybrid capacitor device exhibits a high energy density of 173 W h L^-1 at a power density of 190 W L^-1, demonstrating its high-level integrated volumetric density/power density.

Rigid-Flexible Coupling Carbon Skeleton and Potassium-Carbonate-Dominated Solid Electrolyte Interface Achieving Superior Potassium-Ion Storage

Potassium-ion energy-storage devices are highly attractive in the large-scale energy storage field, but the intercalation of large K ions greatly worsens the stability of electrode structures and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films, causing slow reaction dynamics and poor durability. In this Article, inspired by bubble wraps in our life, a bubble-wrap-like carbon sheet (BPCS) with a rigid-flexible coupling porous architecture is fabricated on the microscale, exhibiting strong structural stability and good accommodation for volume expansion. In the meantime, a K₂CO₃·1.5H₂O-dominated SEI is created by an interfacial transfer behavior of carbonate groups. These K₂CO₃·1.5H₂O nanograins not only enhance the stability of the SEI by constructing a stable scaffold but also create more diffusion routes for K ions. On the basis of the above, using the BPCS as the anode of potassium-ion batteries delivers reversible capacities of 463 mAh g^-1 at 50 mA g^-1 and 195 mAh g^-1 at 10 A g^-1 with a long cycling life. The assembled BPCS//NPC potassium-ion hybrid capacitor exhibits a high energy density of 167 Wh kg^-1 and a superior cycling capability with 80.8% capacity retention over 10 000 cycles with nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. Even at the higher current density of 10 A g^-1, the device could deliver an energy density of 92.9 Wh kg^-1 over 5000 cycles at a power density of 9200 W kg^-1 with only 0.002% fading per cycle, which can rival lithium-ion hybrid supercapacitors.

Effects of fat type and emulsifier in feed on growth performance, slaughter traits, and lipid metabolism of Cherry Valley ducks

A 2-factor test design was used to investigate the effect of an emulsifier (Aldo®, Lonza, America) (200 g/t) in the diet of Cherry Valley meat ducks to replace some of 2 different oils (animal fat and vegetable oil) on meat production performance, slaughter traits, and fat metabolism. The 900 healthy 18-day-old ducks were grouped into 6 treatments, each with 5 replicates and 30 meat ducks per replicate. The 2 fat sources were established as a positive control group, a negative control group (positive control group-some oil (equivalent to metabolic energy of 50 kcal/ton)), and an emulsifier group (negative control group + 200 g/ton Aldo). The results showed that addition of different fat sources in feed had no significant effect on growth performance, carcass properties, and fat metabolism of 18- to 42-day-old meat ducks (P > 0.05). Reducing the amount of oil used in the feed lowered the growth performance, carcass properties, and affected fat metabolism of meat ducks. However, in feeds with 2 fat sources, some oils were replaced by adding Aldo without affecting growth performance and carcass properties of meat ducks, and improved their fat metabolism, reduced triglycerides (TG) in serum, and increased activity of lipoprotein and hepatic lipases in liver and of pancreatic lipase. Thus, addition of Aldo to a low fat diet could improve growth performance, carcass quality, and lipid metabolism, and promote digestion and absorption of fat for meat ducks.

Randomized phase II trial comparing tumor bed alone with tumor bed and elective nodal postoperative radiotherapy in patients with locoregionally advanced thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

This study compares the outcomes of different postoperative radiation fields for locoregionally advanced thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. This is a multi-institution randomized phase II trial and noninferior study. Patients with ESCC who had undergone esophagectomy (stage T3-4N0-3M0) were enrolled and randomized into the large-field irradiation arm (LFI; tumor bed and elective lymph node region) and small-field irradiation arm (SFI; tumor bed only). The primary endpoint was whether the disease-free survival (DFS) of SFI was not inferior to LFI. The secondary endpoint was to evaluate the rationality of the radiation target volume by analyzing failure patterns. One hundred twenty-one patients (64 patients for LFI and 57 patients for SFI, respectively) were eligible in this mid-time analysis. The 1- and 3-year DFS was 79.9%, 46.2% for LFI and 67.6%, 44.3% for SFI, respectively (P = 0.414). The locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) of LFI was significantly better than that of SFI (P = 0.003). However, there were no significant differences in the distant metastasis-free survival and overall survival between the two arms (P = 0.332, P = 0.405, respectively). The failure patterns of the two arms were significantly different (P = 0.002). For pT3-4N0-3M0 ESCC patients, postoperative radiotherapy with SFI showed a similar survival outcome to LFI. However, the LRFS of patients with SFI was worse than that of patients with LFI.

Delay in recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole from unexpected CFC-11 emissions

The Antarctic ozone hole is decreasing in size but this recovery will be affected by atmospheric variability and any unexpected changes in chlorinated source gas emissions. Here, using model simulations, we show that the ozone hole will largely cease to occur by 2065 given compliance with the Montreal Protocol. If the unusual meteorology of 2002 is repeated, an ozone-hole-free-year could occur as soon as the early 2020s by some metrics. The recently discovered increase in CFC-11 emissions of ~ 13 Gg yr-1 may delay recovery. So far the impact on ozone is small, but if these emissions indicate production for foam use much more CFC-11 may be leaked in the future. Assuming such production over 10 years, disappearance of the ozone hole will be delayed by a few years, although there are significant uncertainties. Continued, substantial future CFC-11 emissions of 67 Gg yr-1 would delay Antarctic ozone recovery by well over a decade.
