Vertical distribution of arsenic and bacterial communities in calcareous farmland amending by organic fertilizer and iron-oxidizing bacteria: Field experiment on concomitant remediation. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2024; 471:134415. Abstract
The migration and transformation mechanisms of arsenic (As) in soil environments necessitate an understanding of its influencing processes. Here, we investigate the subsurface biogeochemical transformation of As and iron (Fe) through amended in the top 20 cm with iron oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) and organic fertilizer (OF). Our comprehensive 400-day field study, conducted in a calcareous soil profile sectioned into 20 cm increments, involved analysis by sequential extraction and assessment of microbial properties. The results reveal that the introduction of additional OF increased the release ratio of As/Fe from the non-specific adsorption fraction (136.47 %) at the subsoil depth (40-60 cm), underscoring the importance of sampling at various depths and time points to accurately elucidate the form, instability, and migration of As within the profile. Examination of bacterial interaction networks indicated a disrupted initial niche in the bottom layer, resulting in a novel cooperative symbiosis. While the addition of FeOB did not lead to the dominance of specific bacterial species, it did enhance the relative abundance of As-tolerant Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes in both surface (39.2 % and 38.76 %) and deeper soils (44.29 % and 23.73 %) compared to the control. Consequently, the amendment of FeOB in conjunction with OF facilitated the formation of poorly amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides in the soil, achieved through abiotic and biotic sequestration processes. Throughout the long-term remediation process, the migration coefficient of bioavailable As within the soil profile decreased, indicating that these practices did not exacerbate As mobilization. This study carries significant implications for enhancing biogeochemical cycling in As-contaminated Sierozem soils and exploring potential bioremediation strategies. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The long-term exposure of sewage irrigation has potential adverse effects on the local ecosystem, causing serious environmental problems. Microorganisms play a vital role in the migration and transformation of arsenic in calcareous soil in arid areas, which highlights the necessity of understanding its dynamics. The vertical distribution, microbial community and fate of arsenic in calcareous farmland soil profile in northwest China were studied through field experiments. The results of this work have certain significance for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil in arid areas, and provide new insights for the migration, transformation and remediation of arsenic in this kind of soil.

Arsenic and cadmium simultaneous immobilization in arid calcareous soil amended with iron-oxidizing bacteria and organic fertilizer. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 920:170959. [PMID: 38365035 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2024.170959] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/03/2023] [Revised: 01/31/2024] [Accepted: 02/11/2024] [Indexed: 02/18/2024]
Abstract
Immobilization stands as the most widely adopted remediation technology for addressing heavy metal(loid) contamination in soil. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this process does not eliminate pollutants; instead, it confines them, potentially leaving room for future mobilization. Presently, our comprehension of the temporal variations in the efficacy of immobilization, particularly in the context of its applicability to arid farmland, remains severely limited. To address this knowledge gap, our research delves deep into the roles of iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) and organic fertilizer (OF) in the simultaneous immobilization of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in soils. We conducted laboratory incubation and field experiments to investigate these phenomena. When OF was combined with FeOB, a noteworthy transformation of available As and Cd into stable species, such as the residual state and combinations with Fe-Mn/Al oxides, was observed. This transformation coincided with changes in soil properties, including pH, Eh, soluble Fe, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Furthermore, we observed synergistic effects between available As and Cd when treated with bacteria and OF individually. The stabilization efficiency of As and Cd, as determined by the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, reached its highest values at 33.39 % and 24.67 %, respectively, after 120 days. Nevertheless, the formation of iron‑calcium complexes was disrupted due to pH fluctuations. Hence, long-term monitoring and model development are essential to enhance our understanding of the remediation process. The application of organic fertilizer and the use of FeOB in calcareous soil hold promise for the restoration of polluted soil and the maintenance of soil health by mitigating the instability of heavy metals(loid).

Sacubitril/valsartan reversal of left ventricular remodeling is associated with improved hemodynamics in resistant hypertension. Hellenic J Cardiol 2024:S1109-9666(24)00073-3. [PMID: 38582140 DOI: 10.1016/j.hjc.2024.03.012] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/24/2023] [Revised: 02/06/2024] [Accepted: 03/23/2024] [Indexed: 04/08/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) has been shown to be an effective antihypertensive drug combination. However, its therapeutic effects on blood pressure (BP), hemodynamics, and left ventricular (LV) remodeling in resistant hypertension (RHTN) remain unclear. METHODS Eighty-six patients completed this self-control study, during which olmesartan was administered within the first 8 weeks (phase 1), followed by S/V within the second 8 weeks (phase 2), with nifedipine and hydrochlorothiazide taken as background medications. Office BP, echocardiography, and hemodynamics assessment using impedance cardiography were performed at baseline and at the eighth and sixteenth weeks. RESULTS The reduction in office BP was larger in phase 2 than in phase 1 (19.59/11.66 mmHg vs. 2.88/1.15 mmHg). Furthermore, the treatment in phase 2 provided greater reductions in systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) and thoracic blood saturation ratio (TBR), with differences between the two phases of -226.59 (-1212.80 to 509.55) dyn·s/cm5/m2 and -0.02 (-0.04 to 0.02). Switching from olmesartan to S/V also significantly reduced E/E', LV mass index, LV end-diastolic volume index, and LV end-systolic volume index (all P < 0.05). Decreases in arterial stiffness, SVRI, and TBR were correlated with changes in indicators of LV remodeling (all P < 0.05). This correlation persisted even after adjusting for confounders including changes in BP. CONCLUSIONS Switching from olmesartan to S/V effectively lowered BP and reversed ventricular remodeling in RHTN. In addition, hemodynamic improvement was also observed. Changes in hemodynamics played an important role in reversing LV remodeling of S/V, and were independent of its antihypertensive effect.

Response of trace elements in urban deposition to emissions in a northwestern river valley type city: 2010-2021. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 913:169547. [PMID: 38160821 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.169547] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/26/2023] [Revised: 12/17/2023] [Accepted: 12/18/2023] [Indexed: 01/03/2024]
Abstract
Anthropogenic activities release significant quantities of trace elements into the atmosphere, which can infiltrate ecosystems through both wet and dry deposition, resulting in ecological harm. Although the current study focuses on the emission inventory and deposition of trace elements, their complex interactions remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we employ emission inventories and deposition data for eight TEs (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb) in Lanzhou City to unveil the relationship between these two aspects. Emissions in Lanzhou can be roughly divided into two periods centered around 2017. Preceding 2017, industrial production constituted the primary source of TEs emissions except for As; coal combustion was the primary contributor to Cr, Mn, and As emissions; waste incineration played a significant role in As, Zn, and Cd emissions; biomass combustion influenced Cr and Cd emissions; and transportation sources were the predominant contributors to Pb and Cu emissions. With the establishment of waste-to-energy plants and the implementation of ultra-low emission retrofits, emissions from these sources decreased substantially after 2017. Consequently, emissions from industrial production emerged as the main source of TEs. The deposition concentrations of Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Pb followed a similar trend to the emissions. However, Cd and As exhibited lower emissions and a less pronounced response relationship. Moreover, Zn concentrations fluctuated within a narrow range and showed a weaker response to emissions. The consistent changes in emissions and TEs deposition concentrations signify a shift in deposition pollution in Lanzhou city from Coal-fired pollution to that driven by transportation and industrial activities. Within this transition, the industrial production process offers significant potential for emission reduction. This insight provides a crucial foundation for managing TEs pollution and implementing strategies to prevent ecological risks.

Effect of dry eye on the reliability of keratometry for cataract surgery planning. J Fr Ophtalmol 2024; 47:103999. [PMID: 37919153 DOI: 10.1016/j.jfo.2023.04.016] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/01/2023] [Revised: 04/04/2023] [Accepted: 04/05/2023] [Indexed: 11/04/2023]
Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dry eye on the reproducibility of keratometry (K) measurements in patients presenting for cataract surgery. METHODS A non-randomized controlled clinical study was performed. Eighty-three eyes of eighty-three patients with cataracts who were enrolled in our hospital from March 2020 to July 2020 were studied. The mean non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT), corneal fluorescein staining score, and ocular surface disease (OSD) SPEED II questionnaire were measured and recorded prior to surgery, and the patients were assigned to a "dry eye" group (n=35) or a "non-dry eye" group (n=48). The K of the patients was measured twice by a Tomey OA-2000 (an average of three times each). The difference of the mean K (ΔKm) and astigmatism vector (ΔKvector) between the two measurements was calculated. The ΔKm and ΔKvector between the two groups were compared. The relationship between the measurement parameters of dry eyes and the accuracy of the preoperative K values was analyzed. RESULTS ΔKm was 0.09 D [0.03; 0.19] in the non-dry eye control group and 0.28 D [0.18; 0.50] in the dry eye group, with a statistical difference between the two groups (P=0.005). The ΔKvector of the non-dry eye control group was 0.22 D [0.14; 0.42], and that of the dry eye group was 0.50 D [0.28; 1.06]. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P=0.010). Between the two groups, the percentage of the ΔKm and ΔKvector values greater than 0.5 D were statistically different (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in ΔKm between the groups with NIBUT>5s and NIBUT≤5s (P=0.537). There was no significant difference in ΔKm between groups≥2 and<2 on the OSD SPEED II questionnaire scores (P=0.442). CONCLUSION Dry eye can affect the reliability of keratometry measurements before cataract surgery, thereby affecting the accuracy of intraocular lens power calculations. In cataract surgery planning, it is necessary to detect subjective and objective indicators of dry eye in patients and carry out effective intervention so as to avoid refractive errors caused by inaccurate keratometry measurements.

Hypertension and cystatin C account for sex differences in serum homocysteine levels in acute coronary syndrome subjects with normal serum creatinine. JOURNAL OF HEALTH, POPULATION, AND NUTRITION 2023; 42:81. [PMID: 37587534 PMCID: PMC10429069 DOI: 10.1186/s41043-023-00430-1] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/18/2023] [Accepted: 08/11/2023] [Indexed: 08/18/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperhomocysteinemia is one of cardiovascular disease risk factors and fasting homocysteine levels are significantly elevated in male compared to female acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with normal renal function. However, it is not known the sex related determinants of plasma homocysteine levels in ACS subjects without renal dysfunction. METHODS A total of 165 ACS participants with normal plasma creatinine who underwent coronary angiography were included in the present study. Clinical parameters, homocysteine, fasting glucose and lipid profile, hemoglobin, white blood cell, platelets, creatinine, cystatin C, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid (UA), and albumin were measured. Multivariate linear regression analyses were used to recognize the predictive factors for homocysteine. RESULTS The levels of plasma homocysteine were significantly higher in men than in women (P < 0.0001). In males, homocysteine (log10) was positively associated with hypertension (r = 0.569, P < 0.001), creatinine (r = 0.367, P < 0.001) and cystatin C (log10) (r = 0.333, P = 0.001). In females, homocysteine (log10) was positively correlated with age (r = 0.307, P = 0.107), hypertension (r = 0.456, P < 0.001), creatinine (r = 0.341, P = 0.008), cystatin C (log10) (r = 0.429, P = 0.001) and UA (r = 0.569, P < 0.001) whereas was negatively associated with LDL-C (r = - 0.298, P = 0.021) and ApoB (r = - 0.273, P = 0.033). Parameters up to statistical significance in males or females were incorporated into the stepwise linear regression models. In men, hypertension (P < 0.001) and creatinine (P = 0.031) were independently related to homocysteine. Most of the variability of homocysteine levels in males were only determined by hypertension. In women, cystatin C (log10) (P = 0.004) and hypertension (P = 0.005) were independently related to homocysteine (log10). Plasma cystatin C had a higher explanatory value than hypertension in females. CONCLUSIONS Hypertension and cystatin C could explain most of the sex differences in serum homocysteine levels in ACS subjects with normal serum creatinine. This finding suggested the importance of making different strategies in males and females to manage hyperhomocysteinemia effectively in ACS subjects without renal dysfunction.

Abstract
The morphologies and exposed surfaces of ceria nanocrystals are important factors in determining their performance. In order to establish a structure-property relationship for ceria nanomaterials, it is essential to have materials with well-defined morphologies and specific exposed facets. This is also crucial for acquiring high resolution 17O solid-state NMR spectra. In this study, we explore the synthesis conditions for preparing CeO2 nanorods with exposed (111) facets. The effects of alkali concentration, hydrothermal temperature and time, cerium source and oxidation agent are investigated and optimal synthesis conditions are found. The resulting CeO2 nanorods show very narrow 17O NMR peaks for the oxygen ions in the first, second and third layers, providing a foundation for future research on mechanisms involving ceria materials using 17O solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Remediation of arsenic-contaminated calcareous agricultural soils by iron-oxidizing bacteria combined with organic fertilizer. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2023; 30:68258-68270. Abstract
In arid soil with low-iron and high-calcium carbonate contents, the fate of arsenic (As) is mainly controlled by the contents of calcium and organic matter in the soil. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about their interaction and that effect on their absorption by maize. The purpose of this study was to explore the long-term immobilization and repair mechanism of in situ As-contaminated farmland. We designed three treatments: iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB), organic fertilizer, FeOB and organic fertilizer added in combination. After 140-day field farmland remediation trial, the results showed that the FeOB can effectively immobilize the water-soluble As (FS1) in soil, and the organic fertilizer promoted the remediation of FeOB. In addition, the content of As in maize grains was reduced after treatment by FeOB and organic fertilizer. The XRD and XPS analysis of the topsoil showed that the combined treatment of FeOB and organic fertilizer promoted the formation of calcium arsenate mineral with low solubility and high stability; As(III) would gradually transform into As(V). The biological iron (hydr)oxide can increase the contents of Fe and As in the rhizosphere and form iron plaques on the surface of the roots by SEM-EDS analysis of maize root. Collectively, these results clarify the main biogeochemical ways to control the fate of As in calcareous soils with low-iron and low-organic matter contents and provide a basis for in situ remediation of As.

Temporal distribution and accumulation pattern of cadmium and arsenic in the actual field calcareous soil-maize system, northwest China. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 870:162012. Abstract
The contrasting chemical behaviors of two toxic elements, arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in co-contamination calcareous soil and its absorption by crops have not been thoroughly explored, especially in the implementation of the measure of prohibiting the use of wastewater to irrigate farmland. We propose that the present environmental characteristics of ecologically fragile areas and appropriate restoration measures are critical determinant of soil remediation. In this study, the typical field farmland irrigated by industrial and domestic wastewater in the Chinese Loess Plateau for >50 years was selected. The results showed that after the sewage irrigation was stopped, the mean contents of Cd (7.09 mg/kg) and As (13.47 mg/kg) in the soil were still rising, which might be a potential input source. The average values of soil risk indices such as the potential ecological risk (PERI = 2394), pollution load index (PLI > 4 for 60 % of studied samples), and degree of contamination (Dc = 86.6) showed severe soil pollution in the study area. The decrease of soil pH, the loss of soil texture and calcium carbonate were found to be the reasons for the high chemical activity of Cd. The bioconcentration factors (< 0.2) and translocation factor (> 1.0) of Cd indicate that corn is an excluder plant and an ideal phytoremediation method. Thus, 20 % of studied samples were higher than maximum permitted levels of Cd in grain, indicating potential related health hazards. On the contrary, As was mainly adsorbed in calcareous soil, and its bioavailability was lower compared with Cd. The difference between DTPA extraction and sequential extraction may be due to the transformation of chemical forms, resulting in unstable fractions increased the bioavailability of toxic elements. Overall, the findings provide new insights for solutions to manage and repair farmlands under the post-wastewater irrigation period.

Abstract
High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity results in bone loss associated with an imbalanced gut microbiota and altered immune status. Probiotics are live microorganisms that are beneficial to the host and are important in maintaining bone health and gut homeostasis. In this study, the probiotic Lactobacillus coryniformis subsp. torquens (T3L) was isolated from traditional yak milk cheese produced in Lhasa and showed distinct acid and bile salt resistance as potential probiotics. Our data indicated that T3L not only reversed HFD-induced gut dysbiosis, as indicated by decreased Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratios but also reduced bone loss. The anti-obesity, microbiome-modulating, and bone-protective effects were transmissible via horizontal faeces transfer from T3L-treated mice to HFD-fed mice. The protective effects of T3L on bone mass were associated with regulatory T (Treg) cell-mediated inhibition of osteoclast differentiation. Our data indicate that T3L is a regulator of the gut microbiota and bone homeostasis in an animal model.

Abstract
The molecular dynamics method was used to analyze the influence of simulated temperature on the damage expansion process of the 3C-SiC sample under nano-indentation loading in order to study the influence of temperature on the internal damage and expansion mechanism of the 3C-SiC single crystal sample further during the nano-indentation loading process. A simulation test platform for diamond indenter indentation was established. The process of stress and strain distribution, dislocation evolution, dislocation expansion and potential energy change were analyzed, combined with the radial distribution function and load displacement curve. The influence of temperature on the 3C-SiC material was discussed. The variation trend of the potential energy-step curve is basically the same at the temperatures of 0 K, 300 K, 600 K and 900 K. The difference in strain distribution was characterized by the influence of temperature on stress intensity, expansion direction and type. The microcosmic manifestation is the significant difference in the dislocation slip at low temperature. In the process of dislocation evolution and expansion, dislocation climbs at room temperature and increases at high temperature, which is closely related to energy release. This study has certain guiding significance for investigating the internal damage difference and temperature effect of the 3C-SiC sample.

Abstract
ZnO plays a very important role in many catalytic processes involving H2, yet the details on their interactions and H2 activation mechanism are still missing, owing to the lack of a characterization method that provides resolution at the atomic scale and follows the fate of oxide surface species. Here, we apply 17O solid-state NMR spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations to unravel the surface structure of ZnO nanorods and explore the H2 activation process. We show that six different types of oxygen ions in the surface and subsurface of ZnO can be distinguished. H2 undergoes heterolytic dissociation on three-coordinated surface zinc and oxygen ions, while the formed hydride species migrate to nearby oxygen species, generating a second hydroxyl site. When oxygen vacancies are present, homolytic dissociation of H2 occurs and zinc hydride species form from the vacancies. Reaction mechanisms on oxide surfaces can be explored in a similar manner.

Abstract
PURPOSE Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a new non-drug treatment for coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the long-term effect of EECP on endothelial dysfunction and exercise tolerance, and the relationship between the changes in the endothelial dysfunction and exercise tolerance in the patients with coronary heart disease are still unclear. METHODS A total of 240 patients with CAD were randomly divided into EECP group (n = 120) and control group (n = 120). All patients received routine treatment of CAD as the basic therapy. Patients in the EECP group received 35 1-h daily sessions of EECP during 7 consecutive weeks while the control group received the same treatment course, but the cuff inflation pressure was 0-10 mmHg. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistance index (RI), and inner diameter (ID) of the right carotid artery were examined using a Color Doppler Ultrasound and used to calculate the fluid shear stress (FSS). Serum levels of human vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF), vascular endothelial cell growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), and human angiotensin 2 (Ang2) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Exercise load time, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max ), metabolic equivalent (METs), anaerobic threshold (AT), peak oxygen pulse (VO2max/HR) were assessed using cardiopulmonary exercise tests. RESULTS After 1 year follow-up, the EDV, PSV, ID, and FSS were significantly increased in the EECP group (P < 0.05 and 0.01, respectively), whereas there were no significant changes in these parameters in the control group. The serum levels of VEGF and VEGFR2 were elevated in the EECP and control groups (all P < 0.05). However, the changes in VEGF and VEGFR2 were significantly higher in the EECP group than in the control group (P < 0.01). The serum level of Ang2 was decreased in the EECP group (P < 0.05) and no obvious changes in the control group. As for exercise tolerance of patients, there were significant increases in the exercise load time, VO2max, VO2max/HR, AT and METs in the EECP group (all P < 0.05) and VO2max and METs in the control group (all P < 0.05). Correlation analyses showed a significant and positive correlations of VEGF and VEGFR2 levels with the changes in FSS (all P < 0.001). The correlations were still remained even after adjustment for confounders (all Padjustment < 0.001). Linear regression displays the age, the medication of ACEI (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors) or ARB (angiotensin receptor blockers), the diabetes and the changes in VEGF and VEGFR2 were positively and independently associated with the changes in METs after adjustment for confounders (all Padjustment < 0.05). CONCLUSION The data of our study suggested that EECP is a useful therapeutic measurement for amelioration of endothelial dysfunction and long-term elevation of exercise tolerance for patients with coronary heart disease. The role of Fe-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) and organic matters in As removal in the heavy-polluted arid soil. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2022; 245:114126. Abstract
The bio-remediation of As-polluted farmlands in the arid area is seldomly reported. This study aimed at understanding the impact of DOM, Fe-oxides, and FeOB biogeochemical processes on As remediation. The approaches used included: FeOB strain Pseudomonas flavescens LZU-3; Batch-experiment. Our results showed that all FeOB tested effectively immobilized As (>95%) during microbial mineralization; DOM play an important role in the reduction of Fe(III)(hydr)oxides and As(V); Less-crystallized ferrihydrite transform to more-crystallized goethite and secondary minerals; Under the reaction of FeOB and DOM, the As-Fe-OM ternary compound were formed, containing N, S, C and O functional group; The addition of OM can clearly reduce soil Eh, promoting dissolution of As in bound to iron oxides, co-precipitation of the amorphous iron oxide in Fe(III)-OM-FeOB, closely related to As in bound to insoluble organics and sulfides and mineral residues, which plays an important role in controlling the mobilization of As. This study provides controlling of As transportation and transformation in the As-DOM-Bio-Fe ternary system as As-remediation technology in the arid soil.

Abstract
Layered double oxides (LDOs) can restore the parent layered double hydroxides (LDHs) structure under hydrous conditions, and this “memory effect” plays a critical role in the applications of LDHs, yet the detailed mechanism is still under debate. Here, we apply a strategy based on ex situ and in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy to monitor the Mg/Al-LDO structure changes during recovery at the atomic scale. Despite the common belief that aqueous solution is required, we discover that the structure recovery can occur in a virtually solid-state process. Local structural information obtained with NMR spectroscopy shows that the recovery in aqueous solution follows dissolution-recrystallization mechanism, while the solid-state recovery is retro-topotactic, indicating a true “memory effect”. The amount of water is key in determining the interactions of water with oxides, thus the memory effect mechanism. The results also provide a more environmentally friendly and economically feasible LDHs preparation route. The “memory effect” of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) plays a critical role in their applications, yet the details of the mechanism are still under debate. Here authors reveal the nature of the “memory effect” with ex situ and in situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Visfatin is negatively associated with coronary artery lesions in subjects with impaired fasting glucose. Open Med (Wars) 2022; 17:1405-1411. Abstract
It is not determined whether serum visfatin levels are related to the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in non-diabetic subjects. In this study, a total of 65 consecutive non-diabetic participants who underwent coronary angiography were enrolled. Serum visfatin and fasting glucose, as well as the serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride, were measured in all participants before the procedure. The extent of coronary artery lesions was determined by Gensini score. Serum visfatin levels were significantly lower in patients with CAD compared to participants with normal coronary arteries. Inversely, the circulating levels of fasting glucose were found to be elevated in patients with CAD compared with the control subjects. Multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that visfatin and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) were independently associated with the presence of CAD in non-diabetics. No significant relationship was found between serum visfatin and fasting glucose levels in IFG subjects. However, there was a negative association between visfatin concentrations and Gensini score in participants with IFG. Both circulating visfatin concentrations and IFG are independently associated with CAD in non-diabetics. Serum visfatin levels are negatively related to the angiographic severity of CAD in subjects with IFG.

Abstract
Remediation of As(III) by use of Fe(II) oxidation bacteria (FeOB) in iron-rich soils has been reported, but seldom used in the iron-deficient soil of arid areas. This study was aimed at selecting native bacterial strains to remediate As pollution in arid soils, coupled with the addition of Fe(II). The used methods included: The selection of two FeOB strains; XRD for solid phase identification based on peaks; SEM with EDS for morphology identification of newly formed minerals with chemical compositions; XPS for surface chemistry of the minerals; FTIR for functional groups of precipitates and 3DEEM for EPS determination, etc. The results were as follows: Sharp decrement curves of As(III) and NO3- with Fe(II) and total Fe contents and increment of NO2-; NH4+ fluctuating during the experimental period of 11 days; and precipitation of Fe(III) hydroxides together with As(III) with broken FeOBs due to encrustation in the SEM scan. It was concluded that two selected Pseudomonas strains have NAFO functionality by addition of iron as iron reduction-oxidation pair in the arid soil, further potentially fixing NH4+ while As(III) can be effectively remediated through the FeOB participation in forms of adsorption and co-precipitation of Fe(OH)3 through an oxidation of Fe(II) process.

Abstract
There are many studies on the treatment of heavy metals by manganese-oxidizing bacteria and the reaction is good; the problem of compound pollution of heavy metals in soil has been difficult to solve. In this study, the application of manganese-oxidizing bacteria in soil was studied. The tolerance of manganese-oxidizing strains (Pseudomonas taiwanensis) to environmental conditions and the treatment effect of heavy metals As, Pb, and Cd in aqueous solution were investigated, and the effect of iron-manganese ratio on the treatment effect was discussed. The results showed that the suitable pH conditions for the growth of P. taiwanensis were 5-9, and the salt tolerance was 6% (by sodium chloride). The tolerant concentrations for heavy metals As(V) and Mn(II) were 500 mg L-1 and 120 mg L-1, respectively. The strains were enriched by nutrient broth medium. After the logarithmic phase, the bacterial suspension was mixed with ATCC#279 medium at a ratio of 1:10, and a certain amount (10 mg L-1) of Mn(II) was added. The results of As, Pb, and Cd removal in the composite polluted water phase were 22.09%, 30.75%, and 35.33%, respectively. The molar ratio of manganese and iron affected the removal efficiency of single arsenic, the highest efficiency is 68%, and the ratio of iron to manganese is 1:5. However, when the soil was treated by the same method, the results showed that not all metals were passivated, such as Cu. At the same time, for As, Pb, and Cd, the treatment effects in soil were worse than those in water, perhaps more consideration should be given to environmental conditions, such as soil moisture and temperature, when manganese-oxidizing bacteria are used to treat soil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) on treatment response and survival outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) receiving treatments with proteasome inhibitors and lenalidomide. METHODS We retrospectively collected the clinical data of newly diagnosed MM patients, who were eligible for ASCT and received proteasome inhibitors or lenalidomide-based treatment in our hospital from January, 2015 to December, 2019. The patients were divided into transplantation group and non-transplantation group, and in transplantation group, the patients received 4 to 6 courses of induction therapy with proteasome inhibitors or lenalidomide before ASCT, while those in the non-transplantation group received more than 8 courses of induction and consolidation therapy with proteasome inhibitors or lenalidomide-based regimens. The therapeutic efficacy and survival outcomes of the patinets were compared between the two groups. RESULTS A total of 105 patients were enrolled in the study, including 48 (45.7%) in transplantation group and 57 (54.3%) in non-transplantation group. The two groups were matched for gender, age and treatment response after 4 courses of induction therapy (P > 0.05). The rate of optimal response before relapse differed significantly between the two groups (P=0.000), and the patients receiving ASCT had significantly higher rates of complete response (85.4% vs 54.4%, P= 0.001) and very good partial response or better (95.8% vs 73.7%, P=0.002) than those without ASCT. At the end of follow-up, the median progression-free survival in the transplantation group was not reached, as compared with 29 months in the nontransplantation group (P=0.013). The median overall survival (OS) in the two groups was not reached, but the OS was better in the transplant group than in the non-transplant group (P=0.022). CONCLUSION ASCT can further improve the depth of remission and survival outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed MM receiving treatments with proteasome inhibitors and lenalidomide.

A Three-Dimensional Printable Liquid Metal-Like Ag Nanoparticle Ink for Making a Super-Stretchable and Highly Cyclic Durable Strain Sensor. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2021; 13:18021-18032. Abstract
Fabrication of metal nanoparticle (NP)-based strain sensors with both a broad working range and linearity range is still a significant challenge. Typically, homogeneous conductive percolation networks are indispensable for linear sensing performance, whereas inhomogeneous microstructures may inevitably arise under large strain due to the formation of defects in rigid NPs. In this study, a sandwich-structured strain sensor with an extraordinarily large stretchability (800%) yet self-healing property is fabricated by three-dimensional printing using a liquid metal-like Ag NP ink. The strain sensor shows an initial conductivity of 248 S cm-1, a good linearity in two strain ranges, and a long-term stability after undergoing 5000 cycles under a strain level of 100%. Such highly comprehensive sensing performance is attributed to the unique structure of the Ag NP ink, in which Ag NPs coalesce together after room-temperature sintering triggered by chlorides, and then, the sintered Ag aggregates tend to form continuous conductive networks through hydrogen bonds between polyacrylic acid and carboxymethylcellulose. Further, the free flow of Ag aggregates is the root cause that leads to the change of relative resistance as demonstrated by finite element simulation. This Ag NP-based strain sensor shows high potential for application in monitoring human knuckle motion.

Abstract
Translationally controlled tumor protein(TCTP) has been implicated in the regulation of apoptosis, DNA repair and drug resistance. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly defined. To better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying TCTP involved in cellular processes, we performed an affinity purification-based proteomic profiling to identify proteins interacting with TCTP in human cervical cancer HeLa cells. We found that a group of proteins involved in DNA repair are enriched in the potential TCTP interactome. Silencing TCTP by short hairpin RNA in breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells leads to the declined repair efficiency for DNA double-strand breaks on the GFP-Pem1 reporter gene by homologous recombination, the persistent activation and the prolonged retention of γH2AX and Rad51 foci following ionizing radiation. Reciprocal immunoprecipitations indicated that TCTP forms complexes with Rad51 in vivo, and the stability maintenance of Rad51 requires TCTP in MCF-7 cells under normal cell culture conditions. Moreover, inactivation of TCTP by sertraline treatment enhances UVC irradiation-induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, and causes sensitization to DNA-damaging drug etoposide and DNA repair inhibitor olaparib. Thus, we have identified an important role of TCTP in promoting DNA double-stand break repair via facilitating DNA homologous recombination processes and highlighted the great potential of TCTP as a drug target to enhance conventional chemotherapy for cancer patients with high levels of TCTP expression.

Abstract
Osteosarcoma is a common malignant bone tumor that mainly affects children and adolescents. Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily. Caspase-8 appears in the upstream of apoptosis signaling pathway among caspases. We investigated TRAIL and caspase-8 levels in osteosarcoma patients to determine their correlation with cell proliferation and apoptosis. Osteosarcoma and osteochondroma patients receiving surgery in our hospital were selected. TRAIL and caspase-8 expression levels in tissue were determined by immunohistochemistry, and protein levels in cells were evaluated by western blotting. Human osteosarcoma cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The osteosarcoma and osteochondroma cell cycles and apoptosis were investigated by flow cytometry. Correlation analysis was applied to TRAIL and caspase-8 levels during cell apoptosis. Positive TRAIL and caspase-8 expression rates in osteosarcoma tissue were significantly lower than in the controls (P < 0.05). TRAIL (0.114 ± 0.002) and caspase-8 (0.352 ± 0.124) levels in experimental cells were obviously lower than in the controls (P < 0.05). Osteosarcoma cells in the experimental group demonstrated higher proliferation and lower apoptosis at 24, 48, and 72 h (P < 0.05). The experimental cell number increased in the G1 stage and decreased in the S stage (P < 0.05). TRAIL and caspase-8 proteins showed positive correlation with apoptosis in osteosarcoma (P < 0.05). Human osteosarcoma presented reduced TRAIL and caspase-8 levels with enhanced cell proliferation and reduced apoptosis. TRAIL and caspase-8 expression levels were positively correlated with apoptosis in osteosarcoma.

Abstract
The formations of cell-in-cell structures have been found in several important biological processes. Recent studies have shed light on the biochemical signaling pathways as well as the quantitative understandings of the underlying physics. Multiple new features that regulate the cellular engulfment have been identified. However, the driving forces promoting the structural formation are still under debate. This review focuses on the recent progress and discusses the potential significance of the existing physical models.

Abstract
The over-expression of a new zinc ribbon (ZNRD1) gene has been shown previously to promote a multidrug-resistant phenotype in gastric cancer cells through the up-regulation of permeability-glycoprotein (P-gp). In the present study, siRNA eukaryotic expression vectors of ZNRD1 are constructed and transfected into SGC7901/VCR cells to examine whether or not down-regulation of ZNRD1 increases cell sensitivity towards chemotherapeutic drugs. After transfection, ZNRD1 expression decreased dramatically in ZNRD1 siRNA transfectants compared with that in parental cells and empty vector control cells. Down-regulation of ZNRD1 significantly enhanced the sensitivity of SGC7901/VCR cells to vincristine, adriamycin and etoposide, but not to 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin. Cell capacity to efflux adriamycin decreased markedly in ZNRD1 siRNA transfectants, and correlation between ZNRD1 down-regulation and increased multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) gene transcriptional activity was observed. These results suggest that the ZNRD1 siRNA constructs down-regulate the expression of ZNRD1 effectively and reverse the resistant phenotype of gastric cancer cells. Furthermore, ZNRD1 might influence transcription of the MDR1 gene and thus play an important role in multidrug resistance in gastric carcinoma.

Abstract
Microdeletions of the entire NF1 gene and surrounding genomic region occur in about 5% of patients with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1). NF1 microdeletion patients usually have more cutaneous and plexiform neurofibromas and a higher risk of developing malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors than other people with NF1. Somatic overgrowth has also been observed in NF1 microdeletion patients, an observation that is remarkable because most NF1 patients are smaller than average for age and sex. We studied longitudinal measurements of height, weight, and head circumference in 56 patients with NF1 microdeletions and 226 NF1 patients with other kinds of mutations. Although children with NF1 microdeletions were much taller than non-deletion NF1 patients at all ages after 2 years, the lengths of deletion and nondeletion NF1 patients were similar in early infancy. NF1 microdeletion patients tended to be heavier than other NF1 patients, but height or weight more than 3 standard deviations above the mean for age and sex was infrequent in children with NF1 microdeletions. Head circumference and age of puberty were similar in deletion and non-deletion NF1 patients. The pattern of growth differs substantially in deletion and non-deletion NF1 patients, but the pathogenic basis for this difference is unknown.

Abstract
Sal-like 4(SALL4) is significant for maintaining self-renewal and pluripotency in embryonic stem cells, cancer cells and perhaps even cancer stem cells. The expression of SALL4 has been recorded in various kinds of cancers and is deemed to have a clinical value for diagnosis. However, little information on SALL4 expression has been illustrated in breast cancer. In this study, the expression of SALL4 was scrutinized by immunohistochemical analysis in breast invasive ductal carcinoma in a large cohort of 160 patients. High cytoplasmic expression of SALL4 was detected in breast cancer tissues compared with normal adjacent tissues. High SALL4 expression was associated with advanced tumor invasion (p = 0.019), lymph node stage (p = 0.027), ER (p = 0.030), PR (p = 0.037), HER2 (p = 0.019) and TNBC (p = 0.007) in overall patients. Interestingly, in Kaplan-Meier analysis, breast cancer patients with high expression of SALL4 demonstrated a worse OS. Both univariate and multivariate analysis illustrated that examination of SALL4 was of great prognostic value in OS. Thus, our data showed that high cytoplasmic expression of SALL4 was considered to be an independent prognostic indicator for breast invasive ductal carcinoma.

Detection of acute cerebral hemorrhage in rabbits by magnetic induction. Braz J Med Biol Res 2014; 47:144-50. Abstract
Acute cerebral hemorrhage (ACH) is an important clinical problem that is often
monitored and studied with expensive devices such as computed tomography,
magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. These devices are
not readily available in economically underdeveloped regions of the world,
emergency departments, and emergency zones. We have developed a less expensive
tool for non-contact monitoring of ACH. The system measures the magnetic
induction phase shift (MIPS) between the electromagnetic signals on two coils.
ACH was induced in 6 experimental rabbits and edema was induced in 4 control
rabbits by stereotactic methods, and their intracranial pressure and heart rate
were monitored for 1 h. Signals were continuously monitored for up to 1 h at an
exciting frequency of 10.7 MHz. Autologous blood was administered to the
experimental group, and saline to the control group (1 to 3 mL) by injection of
1-mL every 5 min. The results showed a significant increase in MIPS as a
function of the injection volume, but the heart rate was stable. In the
experimental (ACH) group, there was a statistically significant positive
correlation of the intracranial pressure and MIPS. The change of MIPS was
greater in the ACH group than in the control group. This high-sensitivity system
could detect a 1-mL change in blood volume. The MIPS was significantly related
to the intracranial pressure. This observation suggests that the method could be
valuable for detecting early warning signs in emergency medicine and critical
care units.

Trends of hypertension prevalence, awareness, treatment and control in rural areas of northern China during 1991-2011. J Hum Hypertens 2013; 28:25-31. Abstract
This study aims to investigate the trends in prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension among rural residents aged 35-74 years in northern China during the country's rapid economic development from 1991 to 2011. Two surveys, conducted in 1991 and 2011, included 2196 and 1939 participants aged 35-74 years from same villages in Ji County, Tianjin of China, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension, adjusted by age and gender using the world standard population in 2000, increased 30% (39.9% vs 51.7%) between 1991 and 2011. The increase was greatest (68%) in women aged 35-44 years. Meanwhile, the prevalence of stage II hypertension increased by 75% overall, with a 4-fold increase in men aged 45-54 years. Although the awareness, treatment and control of hypertension increased significantly during the same period, they remained unacceptably poor. In conclusion, the community-based surveys showed that the prevalence of hypertension in rural residents of northern China aged 35-74 years increased rapidly over the past 20 years, and most dramatically in young women. Efforts in the primary prevention of hypertension, particularly for young women, and promoting education for hypertension awareness, treatment and control are of paramount importance in rural China.

Mosaicism in von Hippel-Lindau disease with severe renal manifestations. Clin Genet 2013; 84:581-4. Abstract
von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an inheritable multisystem tumor syndrome characterized by multiple benign and malignant tumors affecting multiple organs. VHL is the result of a germline mutation in the VHL tumor suppressor gene. Molecular genomic analysis routinely confirms the clinical diagnosis. However, the use of molecular diagnostic methods can often be insufficient for the detection of mosaic germline VHL mutations, making the diagnosis of some cases of VHL difficult. Here, we report the case of a VHL mosaic patient with bilateral renal lesions in the absence of other VHL-associated lesions. A VHL mutation was not originally detected by routine molecular testing. Nonetheless, the detection of a heterozygous c.194C>G (p.Ser65Trp) VHL mutation in the patient's daughter prompted further genetic assessment and eventually resulted in the finding of a mosaic c.194C>G (p.Ser65Trp) VHL mutation in the patient. The mutation rate was 18.8 ± 3.84% in peripheral leukocytes. As the frequency of VHL mosaicism remains underdetermined, the possibility of a diagnosis of mosaic VHL should be considered in patients with both typical and atypical VHL-associated manifestations.

Abstract
The secreted glycoprotein YKL-40 is a member of the chitinase family and elevated serum YKL-40 levels have been reported to be associated with reduced survival in several malignancies, including endometrial cancer. This study investigated immunoreactivity to YKL-40 protein and its prognostic implications in endometrial cancer. Levels of YKL-40 protein in normal endometrium (n = 42), endometrial hyperplasia (n = 40) and endometrial adeno carcinoma (n = 68) were examined using immunohistochemistry. YKL-40 immunoreactivity was significantly higher in endometrial adenocarcinoma compared with hyperplastic and normal endo metrium. In addition, high immuno reactivity of YKL-40 protein was associated with advanced stage, high histological grade, lymph node metastasis and lympho vascular invasion. Moreover, positive immunoreactivity for YKL-40 was a significant predictor of poor prognosis, as measured by estimated progression-free survival and estimated overall survival, compared with negative immunoreactivity. In conclusion, high YKL-40 immuno reactivity in endometrial cancer may be associated with poor prognosis.
