Abstract
The accurate thermosensing requires a minimum impact of autofluorescence and light scattering from the samples. In this study, we discovered that commercially available benzene-1,4-diboronic acid (BDBA) doped co-crystals with trimethylolpropane (TMP) exhibit excellent thermochromic dual phosphorescence properties over a wide temperature range from -132 to 40 °C, despite its simple structure that does not have any donor-acceptor linkage. The dual phosphorescence was consisted of monomeric benzene-1,4-diboronate (BDBA ester) and aggregation-stabilized species. With an increase in temperature, the emission intensity from the monomeric state significantly decreased, whereas that originating from the aggregated state remained almost constant owing to the difference in their thermal stabilities. Further investigation revealed that molecular distortions in singlet excited states enable efficient intersystem crossing, causing efficient phosphorescence from the monomeric state of BDBA ester.

Abstract
Boronate assemblies, derived from benzene-1,4-diboronic acid, showed room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in both the solid-state and dispersions, being quite sensitive to the preparation conditions. Our chemometrics-assisted quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) analysis between the nanostructure and RTP behavior of boronate assemblies led us not only to understand their RTP mechanism but also to predict the RTP properties of unknown assemblies from the PXRD patterns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patients with cerebral aneurysms often undergo MR imaging after microsurgical clipping. Ultra-high-field MR imaging at 7T may provide high diagnostic capability in such clinical situations. However, titanium alloy clips have safety issues such as adverse interactions with static magnetic fields and radiofrequency-induced heating during 7T MR imaging. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess temperature increases on various types of titanium alloy aneurysm clips during 7T MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five types of titanium alloy aneurysm clips were tested, including combinations of short, long, straight, angled, and fenestrated types. Each clip was set in a phantom filled with gelled saline mixed with polyacrylic acid and underwent 7T MR imaging with 3D T1WI with a spoiled gradient recalled acquisition in the steady-state technique. Temperature was chronologically measured at the tips of the clip blade and head, angled part of the clip, and 5 mm from the tip of the clip head using MR imaging-compatible fiber-optic thermometers. RESULTS Temperature increases at all locations for right-angled and short straight clips were <1°C. Temperature increases at the angled part for the 45° angled clip and the tip of the clip head for the straight fenestrated clip were >1°C. Temperature increases at all locations for the long straight clip were >2°C. CONCLUSIONS Temperature increases on the right-angled and short straight clips remained below the regulatory limit during 7T MR imaging, but temperature increases on the 45° angled, straight fenestrated, and long straight clips exceeded this limit.

Abstract
An afterglow is beneficial as an emission signal in the field of displays and imaging probes. Here, boronic acid-appended and spirolactam ring-containing rhodamine dye 1 was synthesized and grafted onto the surface of room-temperature phosphorescence-active boronate nanoparticles (BPs), composed of polymeric 3-benzo-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-3,9-diboraspiro[5.5]undecane. The resultant ensemble, 1@BP, exhibited a greenish afterglow. However, the addition of Al3+ into the dispersion solution with 1@BP led to a change in the afterglow to grass green as a result of Förster-type energy transfer from the phosphorescent BP to the Al3+ -interacting rhodamine dye 1 on the surface. Based on the ratio of the two emission intensities, a linear response in the concentration range of 3.8-15.2 μM was observed, with a detection limit of 4.2 μM for Al3+ . A metal ion-dependent discernable color in afterglow was observed on a 1@BP-coated filter paper, which would be useful for not only film-based afterglow chemosensors but also encryption application.

Abstract
To implement precision oncology, analytical validity as well as clinical validity and utility are important. However, proficiency testing (PT) to assess validity has not yet been systematically performed in Japan. To investigate the quality of next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms and cancer genome testing prevalent in laboratories, we performed pilot PT using patient samples. We prepared genomic DNA from the cancer tissue and peripheral blood of 5 cancer patients and distributed these to 15 laboratories. Most participating laboratories successfully identified the pathogenic variants, except for two closely located KRAS variants and 25 bp delins in EGFR. Conversely, the EGFR L858R variant was successfully identified, and the allele frequency was similar for all the laboratories. A high DNA integrity number led to excellent depth and reliable NGS results. By conducting this pilot study using patient samples, we were able to obtain a glimpse of the current status of cancer genome testing at participating laboratories. To enhance domestic cancer genome testing, it is important to conduct local PT and to involve the parties concerned as organizers and participants.

Abstract
Natto is a traditional Japanese fermented soy product high in γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), whose beneficial effects have been reported. We prepared high-γ-PGA natto and compared the dietary influence on liver lipids and cecal microbiota in mice fed a diet containing it or a standard diet. The mice were served a 30% high-γ-PGA natto diet (PGA group) or standard diet (Con group) for 28 days. Liver lipids, fecal lipids, and fecal bile acids were quantified. Cecal microbiota were analyzed by PCR amplification of the V3 and V4 regions of 16S rRNA genes and sequenced using a MiSeq System. Additionally, the cecal short-chain fatty acid profile was assessed. The results revealed that the liver lipid and triglyceride contents were significantly lower (p<0.01) and amounts of bile acids and lipids in the feces were significantly higher in the PGA group than in the Con group. The cecal butyric acid concentration was observed to be significantly higher in the PGA group than in the Con group. Principal component analysis of the cecal microbiota revealed that the PGA and Con groups were distinct. The ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes was found to be significantly low in the PGA mice. The results revealed a significantly higher relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae (p<0.05) and significantly lower relative abundance of Coriobacteriaceae (p<0.01) in the PGA group. Analysis of the correlation between bacterial abundance and liver lipids, cecal short-chain fatty acids, fecal lipids, and fecal bile acids suggested that intestinal microbiota can be categorized into different types based on lipid metabolism. Hepatic lipid accumulation typically facilitates the onset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Our findings suggest that high-γ-PGA natto is a beneficial dietary component for the prevention of NAFLD.

Abstract
The newly prepared fluorescent carboxyamidoquinolines (1-3) and their Zn(II) complexes (Zn@1-Zn@3) were used to bind and sense various phosphate anions utilizing a relay mechanism, in which the Zn(II) ion migrates from the Zn@1-Zn@3 complexes to the phosphate, namely adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and pyrophosphate (PPi), a process accompanied by a dramatic change in fluorescence. Zn@1-Zn@3 assemblies interact with adenine nucleotide phosphates while displaying an analyte-specific response. This process was investigated using UV-vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopy. It is shown that the different binding selectivity and the corresponding fluorescence response enable differentiation of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP), pyrophosphate (PPi), and phosphate (Pi). The cross-reactive nature of the carboxyamidoquinolines-Zn(II) sensors in conjunction with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was utilized in a simple fluorescence chemosensor array that allows for the identification of ATP, ADP, PPi, and Pi from 8 other anions including adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) with 100 % correct classification. Furthermore, the support vector machine algorithm, a machine learning method, allowed for highly accurate quantitation of ATP in the range of 5-100 μM concentration in unknown samples with error <2.5 %.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease are advised to undergo selective revascularization surgery based on cerebral hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays for the detection of reduced CBF in such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-seven patients underwent brain perfusion SPECT and pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using standard postlabeling delay (1525 ms) and Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays. For Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays, based on data obtained from the 7 sub-boluses with combinations of different labeling durations and postlabeling delays, CBF corrected by the arterial transit time was calculated on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Using a 3D stereotaxic template, we automatically placed ROIs in the ipsilateral cerebellar hemisphere and 5 MCA territories in the symptomatic cerebral hemisphere; then, the ratio of the MCA to cerebellar ROI was calculated. RESULTS The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting reduced SPECT-CBF ratios (<0.686) was significantly greater for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios (0.885) than for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratios (0.786) (P = .001). The sensitivity and negative predictive value for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios were 100% (95% confidence interval, 100%-100%) and significantly higher than the sensitivity (95% CI, 44%-80%) and negative predictive value (95% CI, 88%-97%) for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratio, respectively. CONCLUSIONS ASL MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays may be applicable as a screening tool because it can detect reduced CBF on brain perfusion SPECT with 100% sensitivity and a 100% negative predictive value in adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed restrictions on people's social behavior. However, there is limited evidence regarding the relationship between changes in social participation and depressive symptom onset among older adults during the pandemic. We examined the association between changes in social participation and the onset of depressive symptoms among community-dwelling older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN This was a longitudinal study. SETTING Communities in Minokamo City, a semi-urban area in Japan. PARTICIPANTS We recruited community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 65 years using random sampling. Participants completed a questionnaire survey at baseline (March 2020) and follow-up (October 2020). MEASUREMENTS Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Two-Question Screen. Based on their social participation status in March and October 2020, participants were classified into four groups: "continued participation," "decreased participation," "increased participation," and "consistent non-participation." RESULTS A total of 597 older adults without depressive symptoms at baseline were analyzed (mean age = 79.8 years; 50.4% females). Depressive symptoms occurred in 20.1% of the participants during the observation period. Multivariable Poisson regression analysis showed that decreased social participation was significantly associated with the onset of the depressive symptoms, compared to continued participation, after adjusting for all covariates (incidence rate ratio = 1.59, 95% confidence interval = 1.01-2.50, p = 0.045). CONCLUSION Older adults with decreased social participation during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated a high risk of developing depressive symptoms. We recommend that resuming community activities and promoting the participation of older adults, with sufficient consideration for infection prevention, are needed to maintain mental health among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Metal artifacts reduce the quality of CT images and increase the difficulty of interpretation. This study compared the ability of model-based iterative reconstruction and hybrid iterative reconstruction to improve CT image quality in patients with metallic dental artifacts when both techniques were combined with a metal artifact reduction algorithm. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective clinical study included 40 patients (men, 31; women, 9; mean age, 62.9 ± 12.3 years) with oral and oropharyngeal cancer who had metallic dental fillings or implants and underwent contrast-enhanced ultra-high-resolution CT of the neck. Axial CT images were reconstructed using hybrid iterative reconstruction and model-based iterative reconstruction, and the metal artifact reduction algorithm was applied to all images. Finally, hybrid iterative reconstruction + metal artifact reduction algorithms and model-based iterative reconstruction + metal artifact reduction algorithm data were obtained. In the quantitative analysis, SDs were measured in ROIs over the apex of the tongue (metal artifacts) and nuchal muscle (no metal artifacts) and were used to calculate the metal artifact indexes. In a qualitative analysis, 3 radiologists blinded to the patients' conditions assessed the image-quality scores of metal artifact reduction and structural depictions. RESULTS Hybrid iterative reconstruction + metal artifact reduction algorithms and model-based iterative reconstruction + metal artifact reduction algorithms yielded significantly different metal artifact indexes of 82.2 and 73.6, respectively (95% CI, 2.6-14.7; P < .01). The latter algorithms resulted in significant reduction in metal artifacts and significantly improved structural depictions(P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Model-based iterative reconstruction + metal artifact reduction algorithms significantly reduced the artifacts and improved the image quality of structural depictions on neck CT images.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dynamic changes in cerebrovascular reactivity after acetazolamide administration vary markedly among patients with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. MR quantitative susceptibility mapping can dynamically quantify the cerebral magnetic susceptibility. The purpose of this study was to determine whether dynamic changes in susceptibility after administration of acetazolamide on 7T quantitative susceptibility mapping are associated with pre-existing states of CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in the cerebral hemispheres with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-five patients underwent 7T MR imaging at baseline and at 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration. Differences between the susceptibility of venous structures and surrounding brain tissue were calculated in the quantitative susceptibility mapping images. Susceptibility differences at 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration relative to baseline were calculated in 97 cerebral hemispheres with major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease. CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen were also calculated using 15O-gas PET in the resting state. RESULTS Dynamic changes of susceptibility after acetazolamide administration were classified into 3 patterns: abnormally increasing 5 or 10 minutes after acetazolamide administration; abnormally decreasing within 20 minutes after acetazolamide administration; and remaining unchanged after acetazolamide administration. CBV was significantly greater in the first pattern than in the latter 2. The cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen differed significantly in descending order from the first to middle to last pattern. CONCLUSIONS Dynamic changes of susceptibility after acetazolamide administration on 7T MR quantitative susceptibility mapping are associated with pre-existing states of CBV and the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in major cerebral arterial steno-occlusive disease.

Abstract
We found that boronate particles (BP), as a self-assembled system prepared by sequential dehydration of benzene-1,4-diboronic acid with pentaerythritol, showed greenish room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). This emission was observed in both solid and dispersion state in water. To understand the RTP properties, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT at M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level were performed using 3,9-dibenzo-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-3,9-diboraspiro[5.5]undecane (1) as a model compound. Our interest in functionalizing the RTP-active particles led us to graft Rhodamine B onto their surface. The resulting system emitted a dual afterglow via a Förster-type resonance energy transfer process from the BP in the excited triplet state to Rhodamine B acting as an acceptor fluorophore. This emission behavior was used for ratiometric afterglow sensing of water content in THF with a detection limit of 0.28 %, indicating that this study could pave the way for a new strategy for developing color-variable afterglow chemosensors for various analytes.

Analysis of spinal muscular atrophy-like patients by targeted resequencing. Brain Dev 2020; 42:148-156. Abstract
BACKGROUND Several effective therapies have been developed for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), but there are multiple diseases that show SMA-like symptoms, necessitating efficient differential genetic diagnostic methods. Advancements in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology have facilitated the successful diagnosis of many undiagnosed genetic diseases. Here, we applied NGS along with conventional methods for the molecular diagnosis of undiagnosed patients with lower motor neuron (LMN) symptoms who were initially suspected to have SMA. METHODS We enrolled 157 patients with LMN symptoms who visited the Institute of Medical Genetics, Tokyo Women's Medical University, between 2005 and 2016. We excluded 86 patients diagnosed with SMA after confirming the causative SMN1 gene deletion or variants. Finally, we examined 12 undiagnosed patients from eight families by targeted resequencing using NGS. Variants were selected on the basis of literature search and databases, and mutations in a gene where loss of function is a known mechanism of disease were considered as pathogenic. Candidate variants were validated by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS We detected novel variants for three patients from two families. Patients 1 and 2 (siblings) showed compound heterozygous TTN variants (c.6621delG, p.W2207Cfs*28 and c.23718T>A, p.F7906L), while patient 3 displayed compound heterozygous KIF1A variants of (c.3871C>T, p.R1291C and c.3898G>A, p.V1300M). CONCLUSIONS We detected appropriate variants using our approach of obtaining candidate pathogenic variants by targeted resequencing through NGS and narrowed down the variants in light of patient clinical symptoms. We successfully identified novel causative variants in three undiagnosed patients, which indicated the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract
The self-assembly of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and benzene-1,4-diboronic acid (DBA) is employed as a sol–gel method for one-step fabrication of hydrogel coatings with versatile functionalities. A mixture of PVA and DBA in aqueous ethanol is prepared as a coating agent. The long pot life of the mixture allows for the coating of a wide range of materials with hydrogel films by simple cast- and dip-coating techniques. The resultant films show negligible dissolution in water and the intrinsic hydrophilicity of PVA provides the films with functional properties, such as improved antifogging property and resistance to protein and cell fouling. The self-assembling process shows adaptive inclusion properties toward nanoscale materials, such as metal–organic coordination polymers and inorganic nanoparticles, affording composite films. Furthermore, the coating film exhibits a unique secondary functionalization reactivity toward boronic acid-appended fluorescent dyes, through which a variety of materials are converted into fluorescent materials. The self-assembly of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and benzene-1,4-diboronic acid (DBA) is employed as a sol–gel method for one-step fabrication of hydrogel coatings with versatile functionalities.![]()

Abstract
Colletotrichum orbiculare species complex fungi are hemibiotrophic plant pathogens that cause anthracnose of field crops and weeds. Members of this group have genomes that are remarkably expanded relative to other Colletotrichum fungi and compartmentalized into AT-rich, gene-poor and GC-rich, gene-rich regions. Here, we present an updated version of the C. orbiculare genome, as well as draft genomes of three other members from the C. orbiculare species complex: the alfalfa pathogen C. trifolii, the prickly mallow pathogen C. sidae, and the burweed pathogen C. spinosum. The data reported here will be important for comparative genomics analyses to identify factors that play a role in the evolution and maintenance of the expanded, compartmentalized genomes of these fungi, which may contribute to their pathogenicity.

Abstract
Nano-structured silicon is an attractive alternative anode material to conventional graphite in lithium-ion batteries. However, the anode designs with higher silicon concentrations remain to be commercialized despite recent remarkable progress. One of the most critical issues is the fundamental understanding of the lithium-silicon Coulombic efficiency. Particularly, this is the key to resolve subtle yet accumulatively significant alterations of Coulombic efficiency by various paths of lithium-silicon processes over cycles. Here, we provide quantitative and qualitative insight into how the irreversible behaviors are altered by the processes under amorphous volume changes and hysteretic amorphous-crystalline phase transformations. Repeated latter transformations over cycles, typically featured as a degradation factor, can govern the reversibility behaviors, improving the irreversibility and eventually minimizing cumulative irreversible lithium consumption. This is clearly different from repeated amorphous volume changes with different lithiation depths. The mechanism behind the correlations is elucidated by electrochemical and structural probing.

Abstract
Self-assembled colorimetric sensors have been prepared from Zn(II)-DPA-attached phenylboronic acid (·Zn) and catechol-type dyes. The ·Zn-dye sensors display selectivity towards oligophosphate over monophosphates. The colorimetric sensor assay (·Zn-dye) is utilized to monitor a model of a metabolic reaction where ATP is hydrolyzed to pyrophosphate (PPi) and AMP.
