Abstract
The integration of flexible electronics with optics can help realize a powerful tool that facilitates the creation of a smart society wherein internal evaluations can be easily performed nondestructively from the surface of various objects that is used or encountered in daily lives. Here, organic-material-based stretchable optical sensors and imagers that possess both bending capability and rubber-like elasticity are reviewed. The latest trends in nondestructive evaluation equipment that enable simple on-site evaluations of health conditions and abnormalities are discussed without subjecting the targeted living bodies and various objects to mechanical stress. Real-time performance under real-life conditions is becoming increasingly important for creating smart societies interwoven with optical technologies. In particular, the terahertz (THz)-wave region offers a substance- and state-specific fingerprint spectrum that enables instantaneous analyses. However, to make THz sensors accessible, the following issues must be addressed: broadband and high-sensitivity at room temperature, stretchability to follow the surface movements of targets, and digital transformation compatibility. The materials, electronics packaging, and remote imaging systems used to overcome these issues are discussed in detail. Ultimately, stretchable optical sensors and imagers with highly sensitive and broadband THz sensors can facilitate the multifaceted on-site evaluation of solids, liquids, and gases.

Abstract
Flexible imagers are currently under intensive development as versatile optical sensor arrays, designed to capture images of surfaces and internals, irrespective of their shape. A significant challenge in developing flexible imagers is extending their detection capabilities to encompass a broad spectrum of infrared light, particularly terahertz (THz) light at room temperature. This advancement is crucial for thermal and biochemical applications. In this study, a flexible infrared imager is designed using uncooled carbon nanotube (CNT) sensors and organic circuits. The CNT sensors, fabricated on ultrathin 2.4 µm substrates, demonstrate enhanced sensitivity across a wide infrared range, spanning from near-infrared to THz wavelengths. Moreover, they retain their characteristics under bending and crumpling. The design incorporates light-shielded organic transistors and circuits, functioning reliably under light irradiation, and amplifies THz detection signals by a factor of 10. The integration of both CNT sensors and shielded organic transistors into an 8 × 8 active-sensor matrix within the imager enables sequential infrared imaging and nondestructive assessment for heat sources and in-liquid chemicals through wireless communication systems. The proposed imager, offering unique functionality, shows promise for applications in biochemical analysis and soft robotics.

Recent Progress in Development of Carbon-Nanotube-Based Photo-Thermoelectric Sensors and Their Applications in Ubiquitous Non-Destructive Inspections. MICROMACHINES 2022; 14:61. Abstract
The photo-thermoelectric (PTE) effect in electronic materials effectively combines photo-absorption-induced local heating and associated thermoelectric conversion for uncooled and broadband photo-detection. In particular, this work comprehensively summarizes the operating mechanism of carbon nanotube (CNT)-film-based PTE sensors and ubiquitous non-destructive inspections realized by exploiting the material properties of CNT films. Formation of heterogeneous material junctions across the CNT-film-based PTE sensors, namely photo-detection interfaces, triggers the Seebeck effect with photo-absorption-induced local heating. Typical photo-detection interfaces include a channel-electrode boundary and a junction between P-type CNTs and N-type CNTs (PN junctions). While the original CNT film channel exhibits positive Seebeck coefficient values, the material selections of the counterpart freely govern the intensity and polarity of the PTE response signals. Based on these operating mechanisms, CNT film PTE sensors demonstrate a variety of physical and chemical non-destructive inspections. The device aggregates broad multi-spectral optical information regarding the targets and reconstructs their inner composite or layered structures. Arbitrary deformations of the device are attributed to the macroscopic flexibility of the CNT films to further monitor targets from omni-directional viewing angles without blind spots. Detection of blackbody radiation from targets using the device also visualizes their behaviors and associated changes.

Abstract
Owing to their high thermal and optical performances, carbon nanotube (CNT) films are used in various photo-thermo-electric (PTE) applications, such as terahertz (THz) sensing and energy harvesting. To improve the performance of PTE devices, a device structure should be designed based on a deep understanding of the thermal and optical responses of the CNT film. However, the optical properties of CNT films in the THz frequency region remain unclear because of the difficulties associated with device processing and measurements. Herein, we report our findings on the thermal and optical characteristics of CNT films. The shape of the CNT film that maximizes the product of the thermal and optical factors (optimal structure of the PTE sensor) depends on the frequency of the irradiating electromagnetic wave. The optimal film thickness and width values for THz irradiation range from 300-600 nm and 50-70 µm, respectively. Subsequently, we fabricated a serially connected, multi-element PTE sensor with an optimal device structure and enhanced the detection sensitivity by approximately 13 times compared with a single-element PTE sensor. In addition, we demonstrated the first THz spectroscopy application using a PTE sensor. The findings of this study, thermal/optical factor enhancement, and micro-sized CNT film processing technology can be used to improve the performance of all CNT-based photothermal devices, including PTE sensors and thermoelectric generators.

Abstract
BackgroundActivation of melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is known to have broad anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. The bleomycin (BLM)-induced skin fibrosis murine model is well-established for systemic sclerosis (SSc). α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, an endogenous ligand of MC1R, inhibits skin fibrosis and MC1R knock-out enhances skin fibrosis in this model. These pieces of evidence suggest that MC1R agonism has potential in the treatment of SSc.ObjectivesDersimelagon phosphate (MT-7117) is an investigational small molecule that is an orally administered, selective agonist for MC1R. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of MT-7117 as a therapeutic agent for SSc by evaluating its efficacy and mechanism of action in complementary preclinical models. The expression and distribution of MC1R in the skin of SSc patients was investigated.MethodsThe effects of MT-7117 on skin fibrosis and lung inflammation were evaluated in BLM-induced SSc murine models that were optimized for prophylactic and therapeutic evaluation. Microarray-based gene expression analysis and serum protein profiling were performed to investigate the mechanism of action of MT-7117 in the BLM-induced SSc models. The effect of MT-7117 on TGF-β-induced activation of human dermal fibroblasts was evaluated in vitro. Immunohistochemical analyses of MC1R expression in skin samples from SSc patients were performed.ResultsProphylactic treatment with MT-7117 (≥0.3 mg/kg/day p.o.) significantly inhibited the increase in collagen content of the skin, the serum level of surfactant protein D, and the weight of the lungs from BLM-induced skin fibrosis and lung inflammation model. Therapeutic treatment with MT-7117 (≥3 mg/kg/day p.o.) significantly suppressed skin thickening and the numbers of myofibroblasts in pre-established BLM-induced skin fibrosis model. Gene array analysis using the BLM-induced SSc model demonstrated changes in numerous categories related to macrophages, monocytes, and neutrophils, followed by endothelial cell-related categories after treatment with MT-7117. In the analysis that focused on biological functions, categories of inflammatory response, activation of antigen-presenting cells, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, vasculogenesis, and vaso-occlusion were suppressed by MT-7117. In the analysis that focused on molecular signaling pathways, triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1, IL-6, and oncostatin M involved in inflammation, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor that is related to fibrosis were all affected by MT-7117. Serum protein profiling using BLM-induced SSc model revealed that multiple SSc-related biomarkers including P-selectin, osteoprotegerin, cystatin C, growth and differentiation factor-15 and S100A9 were suppressed by MT-7117. MT-7117 inhibited the activation of human dermal fibroblasts by suppressing TGF-β-induced ACTA2 (encoding α-smooth muscle actin) mRNA elevation in vitro. Immunohistochemical analyses showed that MC1R positivity was observed in 40 of 50 diffuse cutaneous SSc patients. MC1R was expressed by monocytes/macrophages, neutrophils, blood vessels (endothelial cells), fibroblasts, and epidermis (keratinocytes) in the skin of SSc patients.ConclusionMT-7117 demonstrates disease-modifying effects in preclinical models of SSc. Investigations of its mechanism of action and target expression analyses indicate that MT-7117 exerts its positive effects by affecting the pathologies of inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and fibrosis through inflammatory cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts. In view of its potent beneficial impact on all these three main pathologies of SSc, MT-7117 is a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of clinically challenging SSc, which has diverse and difficult to treat symptoms. A phase 2 clinical trial investigating the efficacy and tolerability of MT-7117 in patients with early, progressive diffuse cutaneous SSc is currently in progress.Disclosure of InterestsMasahiro Kondo Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Tsuyoshi Suzuki Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Yuko Kawano Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Shinji Kojima Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Masahiko Miyashiro Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Atsuhiro Matsumoto Employee of: Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Gabriela Kania: None declared, Przemyslaw Blyszczuk: None declared, rebecca ross: None declared, Panji Mulipa: None declared, Francesco Del Galdo Grant/research support from: Prof. F. Abstract
Chemical monitoring communicates diverse environmental information from industrial and biological processes. However, promising and sustainable systems and associated inspection devices that dynamically enable on-site quality monitoring of target chemicals confined inside transformable and opaque channels are yet to be investigated. This paper designs stretchable photo-sensor patch sheets for nonsampling, source-free, and label-free on-site dynamic chemical monitoring of liquids flowing inside soft tubes via simple deformable surface wrapping. The device integrates carbon nanotube-based broadband photo-absorbent thin films with multilayer-laminated stretchable electrodes and substrates. The patterned rigid-soft structure of the proposed device provides durability and optical stability against mechanical deformations with a stretchability range of 70 to 280%, enabling shape-conformable attachments to transformable objects. The effective use of omnidirectional and transparent blackbody radiation from free-form targets themselves allows compact measurement configuration and enhances the functionality and simplicity of this scheme, while the presenting technology monitors concentrations of arbitrary water-soluble chemicals.

Abstract
Background The activation of melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes stimulates the production of eumelanin. A tridecapeptide α melanocyte‐stimulating hormone (αMSH) is known to induce skin pigmentation. Objectives We characterised the properties of a novel oral MC1R agonist dersimelagon (MT‐7117) with respect to its specific binding to MC1R, downstream signalling and eumelanin production in experimental models. Methods The competitive binding and production of intracellular cyclic adenosine 3′, 5′‐monophosphate in cells expressing recombinant melanocortin receptors were examined. A mouse melanoma cell line B16F1 was used for the evaluation of in vitro melanin production. The in vitro activity of MT‐7117 was determined with αMSH and [Nle4, D‐Phe7]‐αMSH (NDP‐αMSH) as reference comparators. The change of coat colour and skin pigmentation were evaluated after repeat administration of MT‐7117 by oral gavage to C57BL/6J‐Ay/+ mice and cynomolgus monkeys, respectively. Results MT‐7117 showed the highest affinity for human MC1R compared to the other melanocortin receptors evaluated and agonistic activity for human, cynomolgus monkey and mouse MC1R, with EC50 values in the nanomolar range. In B16F1 cells, MT‐7117 increased melanin production in a concentration‐dependent manner. In vivo, MT‐7117 (≥0.3 mg/kg/day p.o.) significantly induced coat colour darkening in mice. MT‐7117 (≥1 mg/kg/day p.o.) induced significant skin pigmentation in monkeys and complete reversibility was observed after cessation of its administration. Conclusions MT‐7117 is a novel oral MC1R agonist that induces melanogenesis in vitro and in vivo, suggesting its potential application for the prevention of phototoxic reactions in patients with photodermatoses, such as erythropoietic protoporphyria and X‐linked protoporphyria.

Frequency-Tunable Terahertz Plasmonic Structure Based on the Solid Immersed Method for Sensing. SENSORS 2021; 21:s21041419. Abstract
Terahertz waves are located in the frequency band between radio waves and light, and they are being considered for various applications as a light source. Generally, the use of light requires focusing; however, when a terahertz wave is irradiated onto a small detector or a small measurement sample, its wavelength, which is much longer than that of visible light, causes problems. The diffraction limit may make it impossible to focus the terahertz light down to the desired range by using common lenses. The Bull's Eye structure, which is a plasmonic structure, is a promising tool for focusing the terahertz light beyond the diffraction limit and into the sub-wavelength region. By utilizing the surface plasmon propagation, the electric field intensity and transmission coefficient can be enhanced. In this study, we improved the electric field intensity and light focusing in a small region by adapting the solid immersion method (SIM) from our previous study, which had a frequency-tunable nonconcentric Bull's Eye structure. Through electromagnetic field analysis, the electric field intensity was confirmed to be approximately 20 times higher than that of the case without the SIM, and the transmission measurements confirmed that the transmission through an aperture had a gap of 1/20 that of the wavelength. This fabricated device can be used in imaging and sensing applications because of the close contact between the transmission aperture and the measurement sample.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Palliative sedation is a therapeutic option when symptom relief is difficult to achieve at the end-of-life. However, little is known regarding palliative sedation in terminally ill heart failure (HF) patients.
Purpose
To survey the practice of palliative sedation in terminally ill HF patients at a tertiary referral cardiovascular center, and to investigate the efficacy and safety of sedative agents in HF patients.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who were referred to palliative care team at our institution between September 2013 and August 2018. Patients who were hospitalized for HF and died during hospitalization despite optimal medical therapy were selected and defined as terminally ill HF. We investigated the practice of palliative sedation in terminally ill HF patients and analysed the vital signs and sedation scale before starting sedative agents and about 1 hour afterward.
Results
Among 95 terminally ill HF patients, 37 were prescribed palliative sedation at the end-of-life (Picture). Of 37 patients (mean age: 70 years, median B-type natriuretic peptide: 1018 pg/ml, median creatinine: 3.0 mg/dl, intravenous inotrope: 81%), 25 were prescribed dexmedetomidine, and 12 were prescribed midazolam as first agent for sedation. Patient's backgrounds were comparable between the two groups. Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale was significantly reduced (P<0.01), whereas blood pressure and heart rate were not altered after treatments in both groups. In midazolam group, significant decreases were noted regarding respiratory rate (P=0.01) and oxygen saturation (P=0.02); however, these parameters were not changed in dexmedetomidine group (Table).
Table 1. Influence of the trapeziometacarpal joint fusion on thumb muscles and thumb-tip movement: A cadaveric study. Clin Biomech (Bristol, Avon) 2019; 67:8-14. [PMID: 31054438 DOI: 10.1016/j.clinbiomech.2019.04.013] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/06/2018] [Revised: 04/16/2019] [Accepted: 04/23/2019] [Indexed: 02/07/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Trapeziometacarpal (TMC) arthrodesis provides stability and strength of the thumb, whereas fixation of the TMC joint restricts motion of the thumb, which may consequently impair the activity of daily living. The objective of our study was to investigate how length and area of the thumb-tip trajectory were reduced after the TMC joint fusion. METHODS Six fresh, frozen cadavers were used for this study. Tension was applied to the distal tendons of 4 extrinsic thumb muscles (extensor pollicis longus, flexor pollicis longus, abductor pollicis longus, and extensor pollicis brevis) by servomotor, whereas tension was applied to 4 intrinsic muscles (abductor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, and adductor pollicis) using static weights. The thumb-tip trajectory was examined using a motion capture system without tension and with 5 different weights to induce intrinsic muscle tension before and after the TMC joint fusion. FINDINGS When tension was applied to the intrinsic muscles, the length of the thumb-tip trajectory decreased in all conditions compared with that before the TMC joint fusion, whereas the trajectory decreased only when the abductor pollicis longus was pulled. The overall thumb-tip trajectory area was reduced to approximately 30% compared with that before the TMC joint fusion. INTERPRETATION Thumb-tip trajectory was restricted by the TMC joint fusion to approximately 30%. However, the reduced area was found tolerable for performing daily activities. Thus, arthrodesis can be the first-line treatment in patients who wish to engage in activities of daily living without difficulties.

Abstract
PURPOSE After undergoing the Kasai procedure for biliary atresia (BA), most patients develop severe splenomegaly that tends to be improved by liver transplantation. However, fluctuations in splenic volume long after transplantation remain to be elucidated. PATIENTS AND METHODS Seventy-one consecutive patients who had undergone pediatric living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for BA were followed up in our outpatient clinic for 5 years. They were classified into 3 groups according to their clinical outcomes: a good course group (GC, n = 41) who were maintained on only 1 or without an immunosuppressant, a liver dysfunction group (LD, n = 18) who were maintained on 2 or 3 types of immunosuppressants, and a vascular complication group (VC, n = 11). Splenic and hepatic volumes were calculated by computed tomography in 464 examinations and the values compared before and after the treatment, especially in the VC group. RESULTS Splenic volume decreased exponentially in the GC group, with splenic volume to standard spleen volume ratio (SD) being 1.59 (0.33) 5 years after liver transplantation. Splenic volume to standard spleen volume ratios were greater in the VC and LD groups than in the GC group. Patients in the VC group with portal vein stenosis developed liver atrophy and splenomegaly, whereas those with hepatic vein stenosis developed hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. Interventional radiation therapy tended to improve the associated symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Fluctuations in splenic volume long after pediatric LDLT for BA may reflect various clinical conditions. Evaluation of both splenic and hepatic volumes can facilitate understanding clinical conditions following pediatric LDLT.

Abstract
A simple method to calculate the amount of dietary (protein, sodium and potassium) intake in hemodialyzed patients was developed. In 8 nutritionally stable patients, the amount of dietary intake was monitored conventionally by a dietary record method. In contrast, assuming that the amount of dietary intake was equal to the amount of accumulation in the body, the former was calculated as the change in the product of serum concentrations and total body fluid volume, which was estimated based on the sex and body build of each patient. The urea accumulation was converted to the protein intake. The interdialytic dietary protein and sodium intake calculated by this method, 120 ± 10 g and 240 ± 40 mEq, respectively, was not significantly different from that obtained by the dietary record, while the interdialytic potassium accumulation, 60 ± 7 mEq, was significantly smaller than the dietary intake, 110 + 9 mEq, obtained by the record method, though the correlation was significant. Thus, the amount of protein and sodium intake can be calculated simply without diet research or body fluid volume measurements. Although potassium intake can not be calculated exactly because of intestinal loss, this simple method gives us a rough estimate. In addition, multiple regression analysis showed that the amount of energy intake obtained by the record method may be explained by the protein and sodium intake estimated by simple calculation.

Terahertz (THz) wave detectors are increasingly expected to serve as key components of powerful nondestructive and noncontact inspection tools in a large variety of fields. In contrast to conventional THz detectors based on rigid solid materials, we previously developed an uncooled and bendable THz camera based on the THz-induced photothermoelectric effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) array devices and demonstrated omnidirectional THz imaging of three-dimensional curved samples. Although this development opened a pathway to flexible THz electronics, the physical parameters that determine the performance of the CNT THz camera have not been fully investigated. As a result, the thermal device design has not been optimized in terms of the camera sensitivity and spatial resolution. In this work, we studied the underlying mechanism of the THz-induced photothermoelectric effect of the CNT camera and found physical factors related to the detector performance. Through simulation and experiments, we observed that the detection sensitivity and response time strongly depend on the CNT channel width and film thickness. We further identified that the irradiated wave penetration into the CNT film through the electrode materials deteriorates the detection area, which is directly linked to the camera spatial resolution. By utilizing the improved CNT device design fabricated based on these findings, we eliminated undesired signals generated via thermal diffusion and THz wave penetration and achieved higher-sensitivity THz detection and higher imaging resolution compared to our previously reported THz camera. The presented technologies are expected to contribute to future flexible THz imaging applications and will also be applicable to other types of photothermoelectric devices.

Abstract
Assuming that urea is distributed uniformly within the total body water, urea-space or total body fluid volume was determined in six uremic patients based on urea kinetics in hemofiltration. The total body fluid volume before hemofiltration was 36.0 ± 3.6 L (61.8 ± 2.6% BW) and after hemofiltration 32.5 ± 3.4 L (59.3 ± 2.8% BW), suggesting that the total body fluid volume was nearly normalized by hemofiltration. It is concluded that urea-space, easily measurable based on urea kinetics during hemofiltration, is useful in evaluating the fluid balance in patients undergoing artificial kidney therapy.

Abstract
Magnification of a polarization angle with Littrow layout gratings has been developed. High magnification with a factor of 7.7 using two gratings in Littrow layout was experimentally proved. The magnification range was investigated by calculation at a wavelength of 10.6 μm. The method can be applied for a high magnification factor >30. Larger groove numbers and smaller blaze angles are suitable for the large magnification. Statistical fluctuation of the diffracted polarization angle is compared with that of the incident polarization angle.

Complementary Indicators for Diagnosis of Hepatic Vein Stenosis After Pediatric Living-donor Liver Transplantation. Transplant Proc 2017; 48:1156-61. [PMID: 27320577 DOI: 10.1016/j.transproceed.2015.12.114] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/30/2015] [Accepted: 12/30/2015] [Indexed: 01/10/2023]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although hepatic vein stenosis after liver transplantation is a rare complication, the complication rate of 1% to 6% is higher in pediatric living-donor liver transplantation than that in other liver transplantation cases. Diagnosis is very important because this complication can cause hepatic congestion that develops to liver cirrhosis, graft loss, and patient loss. However, this is unlikely in cases where there are no ascites or hypoalbuminemia. OBJECTIVES Eleven of 167 patients who had undergone pediatric living-donor liver transplantation were identified in the outpatient clinic at Jichi Medical University as having suffered from hepatic vein stenosis, and were enrolled in the study. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study in which we reviewed historical patient records to investigate the parameters for diagnosis and examine treatment methods and outcomes. RESULTS The 11 patients were treated with 16 episodes of balloon dilatation. Three among these received retransplantation and another 2 cases required the placement of a metallic stent at the stenosis. Histological examination revealed severe fibrosis in four of nine patients who had a liver biopsy, with mild fibrosis revealed in the other five grafts. Furthermore, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly diagnosed by computed tomography, elevated levels of hyarulonic acid, and/or a decrease in calcineurin inhibitor clearance were found to be pathognomonic at diagnosis, and tended to improve after treatment. CONCLUSIONS Diagnosis of hepatic vein stenosis after liver transplantation can be difficult, so careful observation is crucial to avoid the risk of acute liver dysfunction. Comprehensive assessment using volumetry of the liver and spleen and monitoring of hyarulonic acid levels and/or calcineurin inhibitor clearance, in addition to some form of imaging examination, is important for diagnosis and evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine associations of dietary variety with changes in lean mass and physical performance during a 4-year period in an elderly Japanese population. DESIGN Four-year prospective study. SETTING The Hatoyama Cohort Study and Kusatsu Longitudinal Study, Japan. PARTICIPANTS 935 community-dwelling Japanese aged 65 years or older. MEASUREMENTS Dietary variety was assessed using a 10-item food frequency questionnaire. Body composition was determined by multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis, and physical performance (grip strength and usual gait speed) was measured in surveys at baseline and 4 years later. Longitudinal analysis included only participants who were originally in the upper three quartiles of lean body mass, appendicular lean mass, grip strength, and usual gait speed. The outcome measures were decline in lean body mass, appendicular lean mass, grip strength, and usual gait speed, defined as a decrease to the lowest baseline quartile level at the 4-year follow-up survey. Associations of dietary variety with the outcome measures were examined by logistic regression analysis adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS In the fully adjusted model, the odds ratios for decline in grip strength and usual gait speed were 0.43 (95% confidence interval, 0.19-0.99) and 0.43 (confidence interval, 0.19-0.99), respectively, for participants in the highest category of dietary variety score as compared with those in the lowest category. Dietary variety was not significantly associated with changes in lean body mass or appendicular lean mass. CONCLUSION Among older adults, greater dietary variety may help maintain physical performance, such as grip strength and usual gait speed, but not lean mass.

Abstract
A tangential viewing phase contrast imaging system is being designed for the JT-60SA tokamak to investigate microturbulence. In order to obtain localized information on the turbulence, a spatial-filtering technique is applied, based on magnetic shearing. The tangential viewing geometry enhances the radial localization. The probing laser beam is injected tangentially and traverses the entire plasma region including both low and high field sides. The spatial resolution for an Internal Transport Barrier discharge is estimated at 30%-70% of the minor radius at k = 5 cm-1, which is the typical expected wave number of ion scale turbulence such as ion temperature gradient/trapped electron mode.

Abstract
Recent studies revealed that a substantial proportion of patients with high-risk B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) harbor fusions involving tyrosine kinase and cytokine receptors, such as ABL1, PDGFRB, JAK2 and CRLF2, which are targeted by tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). In the present study, transcriptome analysis or multiplex reverse transcriptase–PCR analysis of 373 BCP-ALL patients without recurrent genetic abnormalities identified 29 patients with kinase fusions. Clinically, male predominance (male/female: 22/7), older age at onset (mean age at onset: 8.8 years) and a high white blood cell count at diagnosis (mean: 94 200/μl) reflected the predominance of National Cancer Institute high-risk (NCI-HR) patients (NCI-standard risk/HR: 8/21). Genetic analysis identified three patients with ABL1 rearrangements, eight with PDGFRB rearrangements, two with JAK2 rearrangements, three with IgH-EPOR and one with NCOR1-LYN. Of the 14 patients with CRLF2 rearrangements, two harbored IgH-EPOR and PDGFRB rearrangements. IKZF1 deletion was present in 16 of the 22 patients. The 5-year event-free and overall survival rates were 48.6±9.7% and 73.5±8.6%, respectively. The outcome was not satisfactory without sophisticated minimal residual disease-based stratification. Furthermore, the efficacy of TKIs combined with conventional chemotherapy without allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in this cohort should be determined.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associations of dietary variety with body composition and physical function in community-dwelling elderly Japanese. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Community-based. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1184 community-dwelling elderly adults aged 65 and over. MEASUREMENTS Dietary variety was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire (maximum, 10 points) that encompassed the 10 main food components of Japanese meals (meat, fish/shellfish, eggs, milk, soybean products, green/yellow vegetables, potatoes, fruit, seaweed, and fats/oils). Body composition was determined by multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Physical function was assessed by measuring grip strength and usual walking speed. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the associations of dietary variety with body composition and physical function. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, higher dietary variety scores were independently associated with higher lean mass (β (SE): 0.176 (0.049), p<0.001) and appendicular lean mass (β (SE): 0.114 (0.027), p<0.001) but not with body fat mass. Elders with a higher dietary variety score had greater grip strength and faster usual walking speed (β (SE): 0.204 (0.071), p=0.004, and β (SE): 0.008 (0.003), p=0.012, respectively). CONCLUSION Greater dietary variety was significantly associated with greater lean mass and better physical function in Japanese elders. The causal relationship warrants investigation in a prospective study.

Development of real-time rotating waveplate Stokes polarimeter using multi-order retardation for ITER poloidal polarimeter. THE REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS 2016; 87:013503. Abstract
The rotating waveplate Stokes polarimeter was developed for ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) poloidal polarimeter. The generalized model of the rotating waveplate Stokes polarimeter and the algorithm suitable for real-time field-programmable gate array (FPGA) processing were proposed. Since the generalized model takes into account each component associated with the rotation of the waveplate, the Stokes parameters can be accurately measured even in unideal condition such as non-uniformity of the waveplate retardation. Experiments using a He-Ne laser showed that the maximum error and the precision of the Stokes parameter were 3.5% and 1.2%, respectively. The rotation speed of waveplate was 20 000 rpm and time resolution of measuring the Stokes parameter was 3.3 ms. Software emulation showed that the real-time measurement of the Stokes parameter with time resolution of less than 10 ms is possible by using several FPGA boards. Evaluation of measurement capability using a far-infrared laser which ITER poloidal polarimeter will use concluded that measurement error will be reduced by a factor of nine.

Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as promising materials for visible, infrared, and terahertz photodetectors. Further development of these photodetectors requires a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms that govern their behavior as well as the establishment of figures of merit for technology applications. Recently, a number of CNT detectors have been shown to operate based on the photothermoelectric effect. Here we present a figure of merit for these detectors, which includes the properties of the material and the device. In addition, we use a suite of experimental characterization methods for the thorough analysis of the electrical, thermoelectric, electrothermal, and photothermal properties of the CNT thin-film devices. Our measurements determine the quantities that enter the figure of merit and allow us to establish a path toward future performance improvements.

Accumulation of accident-derived radiocesium in lake and coastal sediments at 300-700 km distance from Fukushima area. RADIATION PROTECTION DOSIMETRY 2015; 167:365-369. Abstract
The accumulation of accident-derived radiocesium was investigated in nine water bodies located 300-700 km from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP). (134)Cs from the accident was detected in surface sediment of five water bodies. The (134)Cs concentration, corrected to the time of the accident in 2011, was generally lower than that of (137)Cs, and its spatial pattern does not fully correspond to that of (137)Cs. These results suggest that radiocesium derived from both FDNPP and past global fallout can be separately observed and that the contributions of both sources are non-uniform within these sites. The (134)Cs inventory in surface sediments is smaller than its deposition, suggesting that almost all deposited (134)Cs remains within the catchment and/or a part has been discharged from the saline and brackish water bodies.

Abstract
The outcome of 55 children with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) who received a second hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was retrospectively analyzed using the registration data of the Japanese Society for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and failure-free survival (FFS) after the second transplantation were 82.9% (95% confidence interval (CI), 69.7-90.8)) and 81.2% (95% CI, 67.8-89.4), respectively. FFS was significantly better when the interval between the first and second transplantation was >60 days (88.9%; 95% CI, 73.0-95.7) than when it was ⩽60 days (61.4%; 95% CI, 33.3-80.5; P=0.026). All 12 patients who were conditioned with regimens containing fludarabine and melphalan were alive with hematopoietic recovery. These findings justify the recommendation of a second HSCT for children with SAA who have experienced graft failure after first HSCT.

Enhanced miR-210 expression promotes the pathogenesis of endometriosis through activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3. Hum Reprod 2014; 30:632-41. Abstract
STUDY QUESTION What are the roles of the microRNA miR-210-an miRNA that is up-regulated in endometriotic cyst stromal cells (ECSCs)-in the pathogenesis of endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER Up-regulated miR-210 expression in ECSCs is involved in their proliferation, resistance to apoptosis and angiogenesis through signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY In the pathogenesis of endometriosis, a number of roles for microRNAs (miRNAs) are becoming apparent. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION ECSCs and normal endometrial stromal cells (NESCs) were isolated from ovarian endometriotic tissues (patients aged 24-40 years undergoing salpingo-oophorectomy or evisceration for the treatment of ovarian endometriotic cysts, n = 10) and the eutopic endometrial tissues without endometriosis (premenopausal patients aged 35-45 years undergoing hysterectomies for subserousal leiomyoma, n = 13), respectively. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS We used a global gene expression microarray technique to identify downstream targets of miR-210, and we assessed the functions of miR-210 in the pathogenesis of endometriosis by using the miR-210-transfected NESCs. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Gene expression microarray analysis revealed that one of the key target molecules of miR-210 is STAT3. In the NESCs, in comparison to the control, miR-210 transfection resulted in the induction of cell proliferation (P < 0.0005), the production of vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) (P < 0.0005) and the inhibition of apoptosis (P < 0.05) through STAT3 activation [increased levels of mRNA (P < 0.0005), and protein (P < 0.005)]. In the ECSCs, inhibitors of STAT3 inhibited the cell proliferation and VEGF production (P < 0.05), and induced the apoptosis of these cells (P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The roles of aberrant miR-210 expression were investigated only in the stromal component of ectopic and eutopic endometrium. Control endometrial tissues were obtained from premenopausal patients who had subserosal leiomyoma and NESC gene expression patterns may be altered in these women. Furthermore, the effects of STAT3 inhibitors were evaluated only in ECSCs and not in NESCs. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The present findings indicate that miR-210 induces NESCs to differentiate into the endometriotic phenotype and we speculate that up-regulated miR-210 expression in ECSCs is involved in the creation of the endometriosis-specific cellular dysfunctions through epigenetic mechanisms. The data indicate that STAT3 inhibitors may be promising candidates for the treatment of endometriosis. Abstract
A new method to magnify a small polarization angle with brazed gratings has been developed. In the method, difference in diffraction efficiency for S and P polarization components is used. The magnification dependence on the incident angle can be small by arranging the grating in Littrow layout. A magnification with a factor ~2.7 has been demonstrated for a 10.6 μm CO2 laser beam as expected from a calculation. The method is applicable in many polarimetry fields.

Terahertz (THz) technologies are promising for diverse areas such as medicine, bioengineering, astronomy, environmental monitoring, and communications. However, despite decades of worldwide efforts, the THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum still continues to be elusive for solid state technology. Here, we report on the development of a powerless, compact, broadband, flexible, large-area, and polarization-sensitive carbon nanotube THz detector that works at room temperature. The detector is sensitive throughout the entire range of the THz technology gap, with responsivities as high as ∼2.5 V/W and polarization ratios as high as ∼5:1. Complete thermoelectric and opto-thermal characterization together unambiguously reveal the photothermoelectric origin of the THz photosignal, triggered by plasmonic absorption and collective antenna effects, and suggest that judicious design of thermal management and quantum engineering of Seebeck coefficients will lead to further enhancement of device performance.
